HEALTH & BEAUTY Have you ever wished you had professional nursing help at home? NURSERVE is your answer! They are a Nursing Agency specializing in nursing care in the comfort of the patient’s own home. They have a team of Nursing Sisters who could assist you with dressing of wounds as well as catheter care. They could also be called upon for an assessment of a wound and guidance in the most appropriate dressing of such. Their Nursing Sisters are constantly updating themselves with the latest dressing techniques and come highly recommended by many of the surgeons with whom they work closely. This, however does not necessarily mean the most expensive dressing, but in reality could save you a lot of money by recommending the correct dressing instead of wastage by using the wrong dressings! Their panel of dedicated nursing staff provide full time or even part time nursing for those needing extra help at home. This could be arranged on a daily, nightly or even half day basis. Nothing seems to be too much to handle for this bunch of dedicated nurses! And to top it all – they do all the paper work for you and claim from the medical aid for their service. What a pleasure!

& Cowies Hill In 1848 Jonas Bergtheil chartered a ship and brought out a group of German farmers and their families who settled approximately 12km inland from Durban. The area was named Westville in honour of Martin West, the first Lieutenant Governor of Natal. The first schools and stores were established in 1877 and were situated near the intersection of Jan Hofmeyr and New Germany Roads. Westville was a farming area up until the early 1920’s and the charm and natural beauty of this rural area remains to this day. The lush, leafy suburbs of modern day Westville with it’s elegant homes set in picturesque gardens, combined with an ideal climate, makes it a much sought after residential area.
Its proximity to Durban and Pinetown as well as excellent schools, business and shopping complexes and sports facilities, make Westville an ideal place to live.

ANIMAL CHARITIES
PAW PRINTS RESCUE AND REHOMING’s main focus is on the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of puppies. Over the last 5 years they have rehomed around 600 pups and dogs. They have been fostering for years, and take care of all the pups at home in Westville. They ensure all pups are vaccinated at 6 weeks or before they are homed, and they will never leave foster care unless they are healthy and ready for their new family. Older dogs are also all sterilized and vaccinated before being homed. The adoption fee now includes Microchipping and a sterilization fee. Like most rescue organisations they rely on fund raising and donations from supporters and are constantly finding creative ways to raise money. If you are looking to adopt a pup or pooch, please feel free to look them up on Facebook. SA ANIMAL LIFE LINE was founded by Prishani Pillay who has an unconditional love for animals, treating animals not just as pets but as family. SA Animal Life Line was started when they took in our first rescue kitten that had been abandoned by his mother and once she saw the need to help the voiceless animals that are abandoned and abused she could not stop and decided to start the NPO to help these animals by fundraising to get them to a vet and find them a forever home. At SA Animal Life Line they rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals and fundraising plays a huge part in this. The fundraising allows them to have the animals checked by a vet. Check out the website is www.sall.org.za. If there is any person who is willing to donate to this worthy cause, no matter how small, it will be greatly appreciated. WESTVILLE WESTVILLE JUNCTION (previously Blue Heights Centre) has become a favourite shopping destination amongst the Westville community. This established landmark was beautifully revamped in 2013 which breathed new life into the building. At the heart of the centre is a light filled, air conditioned atrium where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or leisurely lunch before strolling through the elegantly finished mall. Expansive glass shop fronts allow plenty of natural light into the building whilst deep timber pergolas shade the centre for a comfortable shopping experience. Vehicular and pedestrian access have been designed for convenience, by allowing ample parking bays (both covered and open air) around the three entrances to the mall.

Mariannhill
Monastery
The Mariannhill Monastery was founded in December 1882 by Abbot Francis Pfanner and his band of Trappist monks. They came to South Africa in response to a call from Bishop Ricards of Port Elizabeth. However, they eventually founded the great Monastery and mission centre of Mariannhill. At one time with 285 monks, it was the largest monastery in the world. Being Benedictine in tradition, the constant rhythm of prayer and work was well suited for life in the monastery and instrumental in bringing Christianity and civilization to the African people. In 1885 the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood was founded for the education of womenfolk. Because the strict Trappist rule of silence precluded the preaching of the Gospel, it was decided in 1909 that the Abbey of Mariannhill should be changed into an active missionary to be called the ‘Congregation of Mariannhill Missionaries.’ The pioneering work among the African people has had a farreaching influence throughout South Africa. St Mary’s Hospital, located next to the Monastery, was established by Mariannhill Monastery and had a very important role to play in the lives of many of the local inhabitants. However, the hospital is now a state run establishment. 28 | Westville & Pinetown

We plan to do so for many a year still as we believe it a right to have a beautiful life and dignity in death. It is our commitment to this philosophy that drives our famous levels of care during such trying times in life. As a Hospice, we provide care for people with advanced, incurable terminal illness in the final stages of life. We promote Palliative care which is treatment focused on the patient as opposed to the disease. The goal is to, “make people feel better”. Not only physically by providing comfort but also emotionally, socially, practically, intellectually and spiritually. This starts at diagnosis and continues during treatment, and moves through to end of life as needed. Highway Hospice currently has 3 shops. From these small beginnings the Charity Shops have grown into a thriving business, thanks to the donations from the community and business sector. All profits made by the shops go to Highway Hospice, assisting us to provide quality care to the terminally ill. We are always grateful for good quality donations of clothing, kitchenware, linen, bric-a-brac, crockery, books, records and furniture – should you be able to assist in any way, please: Telephone our Receiving Depot on 031-709 2647 to arrange collection of the goods from your home. EDUCATION
THE UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL was formed on 1 January 2004 as a result of the merger between the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal. The new university brings together the rich histories of both the former Universities. Founded in 1910 as the Natal University College in Pietermaritzburg, the University of Natal was granted independent University status in 1949 owing to its rapid growth in numbers, its wide range of courses and its achievements in and opportunities for research. By that time, the NUC was already a multi-campus institution, having been extended to Durban after World War 1. The distinctive Howard College building was opened in 1931, following a donation by Mr T B Davis, whose son Howard Davis was killed during the Battle of Somme in World War I. In 1946, the government approved a Faculty of Agriculture in Pietermaritzburg and, in 1947, a Medical School for African, Indian and Coloured students in Durban.
Sciences and Health Sciences. As the merged institution takes shape, the Westville campus will be the home of Commerce and Management disciplines and some Health Sciences. The two KwaZulu-Natal universities were among the first batch of South African institutions to merge in 2004 in accordance with the government’s higher educational restructuring plans that will eventually see the number of higher educational institutions in South Africa reduced from 36 to 21. Confirmed by a Cabinet decision in December 2002, the mergers are the culmination of a wide-ranging consultative process on the restructuring of the Higher Education Sector that began in the early 1990s. The OPEN DOOR CRISIS CARE CENTRE (THE OPEN DOOR) is a non-profit, interdenominational outreach organisation established in 1997 by Thora Mansfield at the request of the local South African Police Services. Our aim is to sustain a holistic, multifaceted one-stop crisis and trauma centre offering counseling, social services, and support groups WHAT DO WE DO AT THE OPEN DOOR CRISIS CARE CENTRE (THE OPEN DOOR) Issues of domestic violence and child abuse need no clarification, however, these diabolical acts against humanity leave lives broken, psychologically damaged and with feelings of total hopelessness that frequently lead to suicide. The Open Door lobbies for advocacy and prevention of secondary abuse on a daily basis, challenging anti-human rights against women and children. The Open Door is a one-stop trauma and crisis centre. We focus our attention on the social issues in our society, offering counseling, social support, and training. Victims of all forms of abuse are accommodated in our registered shelter. This shelter is situated in a quiet suburb with an undisclosed address to ensure the safety of our clients who are frequently at risk from perpetrators. AREAS OF FOCUS Domestic Violence Child Abuse & Vulnerable Children Human Trafficking Trauma
Protection of victims in our shelter, Prosecution – through the preparation of equipping victims to become effective witnesses in court and Partnership with government agencies and recognized NGO’s to lobby for better service provision by state departments and the South African Police Services including prevention of secondary traumatization of victims through poor and insensitive treatment. The Open Door has registered shelters with the Department of Social Development for women & children and men & boys. These shelters are also accredited to accommodate victims of human trafficking. History The Open Door Crisis Care Centre (The Open Door) has been in existence since 1997 and has soundly established itself as a lead organisation working with abused women, vulnerable children and families focusing both on prevention (e.g. training and awareness) and intervention (e.g. counseling and social services.). Over this period The Open Door has counseled thousands of men, women, and children reaching out to not only the individual in crisis but reaching out to the extended family group. CHARITY ETHELBERT CHILD & YOUTH CARE CENTRE In 1896 16-month old Ethelbert Corbishley drowned in a storm water drain where he had gone to retrieve a ball. His parents, Francis and Tom Corbishley, together with the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, decided to open a children’s’ home in his memory. The foundation stone was laid in June 1907 and eight months later, on 12 February 1908, one girl and four boys were admitted. Originally, the boys and girls were housed in a single doublestorey building. The girls were accommodated upstairs and the boys downstairs. Later the Corbishley family provided extra ground and another house was built for the girls. Towards the end of the forties, the committee involved with the running of the Home realised that however hard they tried, the Home would essentially remain an institute as long as the girls and boys lived in boarding school-type accommodation. After sixteen years of planning, the “cottage system” of residential care was introduced to Ethelbert – a concept entirely new to children’s homes in the province. The six new homes, each equipped with a kitchen, lounge, dining-room and bedrooms, were opened in November 1959. The building that housed boys and girls
is the only original structure that remains and is now called Corbishley Hall. It is used as a hall for meetings, Centre concerts and events, and the AGMs. The 1990s brought more exciting programmes to life at Ethelbert. In 1991 the integration of children of all race groups took place at Ethelbert. This took many years of negotiation with Government as their policy at the time did not allow for cross-cultural placements. The transition took place smoothly and life went on as normal.

This has become a popular retirement village with 32 units. E-mail: admin@ethelbert.co.za 93 Ethelbert Road Malvern 4093 Contact Details Telephone: 031 464 6555
