TU Welcome to Extravaganza 36: The Experience, and thank you in advance to the many of you who have gathered to support our great school. Your presence is a testament to the true meaning and value of the Elgin Academy experience, and we are so appreciative that you are joining us.

Your support of this event signals that you value these hallmark experiences as well, and we are honored by your acknowledgement. We who are privileged to work at EA each day understand the responsibility that your support places upon us. Please know how seriously we take the challenge of fostering these experiences.

While the student experience at Elgin Academy is complex and difficult to boil down, a few important hallmarks stand out. The experiences students share with a professional, compassionate faculty help them to obtain crucial academic building blocks and ready themselves to make a significant difference in the world around them. The experiences they have in the classrooms, theatres, studios and on the playing fields also position them to make this impact by ensuring that they understand the value of something greater than themselves as they learn to play their roles in an increasingly interconnected society. The experiences they have together, on and off campus, help them learn to navigate the world around them with effectiveness, empathy and an understanding of the skills needed to solve problems.

In exchange we ask you to bid high, whether it is online or in person at our event. The EA experience deserves our collective, generous support. Thank you to the myriad people who played a role in planning a vital and fun evening, especially George and Dani Smiley whose leadership has been essential to the success of this entire event. Thank you to the many people who are bidding online (our online auction can be found at www.biddingforgood.com/ElginAcademy and will run through March 14). And thank you for all you do to support our school; we are humbled by our partnership.

Enjoy this year’s experience! Sincerely, Seth Hanford, Head of School

Good Evening,

xWelcome to Extravaganza 36: The Experience It has been great hearing people talk about their experiences here at Elgin Academy. Whether it is the familiarity our children have with their accomplished and nurturing teachers, the depth of their involvement with both student and teacher led extracurricular activities, or the exceptional education each individual child receives while here, there seems to be a common thread among all of us here at Elgin Academy. The Tradition, Innovation and Excellence each of us enjoys is what knits us together as a community. Tonight we gather to show our support for Elgin Academy! George and I would like to thank Elgin Academy for this great adventure of co-chairing Extravaganza 36. This event would not have come together as wonderfully as it did without the help of so many people. Thank you to everyone who assisted in making tonight a success. To those of you who solicited and purchased ads and donated items, coordinated the classroom art projects, showed support at our many meetings, and to those who demonstrate their unfettered bidding tonight, thank you! From our dedicated teachers, to technology and arts programs, all the money raised tonight helps support the great experiences our children have here at Elgin Academy. Please stay after the auction for more fun and dancing as we celebrate our community, friends, and EA!

Past, Present, Future: The Elgin Academy Experience The Elgin Academy experience is characterized by powerful personal connections. We treasure the relationships we form with our community of faculty, fellow students and parents, and we know that today’s Elgin Academy students are developing lifelong friendships. We recognize that we have a bond with our alumni and alumni families and value our kinship. This legacy of Elgin Academy lives on today within the walls of the campus–academic excellence, robust fine arts and athletic programs, service to others and comprehensive opportunities in an ever-changing and competitive world. The community culture and energetic and innovative programs distinguish the Elgin Academy of today and excite and encourage all to support the school in a variety of ways with time, talent and resources. The past and present community continues to champion the school to ensure that vibrancy, relevance and top-notch learning opportunities exist today and for future generations. It is vital that we make these opportunities accessible for the broadest possible group of children and young adult students, attract and retain the finest faculty, enroll the most qualified students regardless of financial need, and constantly cultivate and enhance the already exceptional program that is The Elgin Academy Experience! B Auction Rules B Silent Auction items will be recorded on wireless technology provided by BidPal. Live Auction, Raffle Tickets, and donations to the Spot Auction are not recorded in the BidPal device/application. Elgin Academy requires that all items be paid in full at the auction. Payments may be made with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. All sales are final. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used one year from March 16, 2013. According to the Internal Revenue Service, only the amount paid for an auction prize “in excess of the actual cash value of the prize” is tax deductible. All values specified at the auction are based on a good-faith estimate of each item’s fair market value.

Check-out will begin at 10:00pm. Attendees may choose to pre-authorize their credit card at check-in. You may pick up your items at the conclusion of the auction after showing an Extravaganza Volunteer a paid receipt at the auction display table at the time of departure. In the event that Auction items need to be packaged and shipped to the owner’s preferred address by Elgin Academy, the winner will be responsible, in advance, for all shipping and handling expenses. For the purposes of determining the charitable tax deduction of your purchase of admission(s) to Extravaganza, the value of the food and beverages that you received for each admission is $80.

Donors contributing goods and services to be used in the Auction may be eligible for charitable tax deduction(s) to the extent allowed by law.

B Raffle Drawings B Experiences Raffle – A limited number of tickets were available for purchase at 1/$50 or 3/$125 prior to March 16, 2013. The drawing will be held on March 16th at the beginning of the Live Auction for a chance to win the choice of one of three trips. The winner need not be present.

Best of the Live Raffle – A limited number of tickets will be for sale on March 16th for a chance to win any one item listed in the Live Auction. The price of each ticket is $50. The drawing will be held prior to the start of the Live Auction. The winner must be present.

The IRS has taken the position that amounts paid for chances in raffles, lotteries, or similar drawings are not gifts and therefore do not qualify as deductible charitable contributions.

.....................................................................................................

B Live & Silent Auctions B Live Auction Rules The Live Auction will begin after the serving of dinner on March 16, 2013 and will continue until all items have been auctioned. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for previewing items prior to bidding. All bidding in the Live Auction will require a bid number which will be given to you at check-in. Silent Auction Rules Each item in the Silent Auction is assigned a number and listed on your BidPal device/application as. A description of the auction item and the assigned number is also on the display table and listed in this catalog.

Persons wishing to place a bid should enter all bids and maximum bids on the BidPal device/application. Bids may be placed in any of the event’s designated areas. Each increase in bid must equal or exceed the minimum figure stated in order to constitute a valid bid. Only an authorized person can nullify a bid. All sections of the Silent Auction will close promptly at 9:45pm. Check-out will open at 10:00pm. The closing bid constitutes the winning bid.

B BidPal B This year we are pleased to be using BidPal, an interactive, wireless, automated silent auction bidding process. With BidPal, you can bid anytime, from anywhere, at the event. You can bid on items, watch bids and be instantaneously

alerted when you have been outbid. At the end of the auction, you know exactly what you have won. Look for volunteers with a green lanyard to assist you with BidPal.
