AUCTION

is the Fox River Valley’s preschool through grade 12 independent school where taking learning personally defines the collective ethos and covenant that unites all students and teachers, parents and staff members, administrators and trustees. Within intentionally small-scaled classrooms, Elgin Academy students learn to be secure in themselves,

disciplined in their thinking, creative in their collaboration, compassionate toward others, and dedicated in their efforts as they contribute as thinkers and doers in school and the community. Families from across Chicago’s northwestern suburbs and exurbs find at Elgin Academy a cherished oasis from the perceived impersonality and over-scaled local public schools. Elgin Academy students in every division pursue active learning, testing new ideas and securing trust with each other and their teachers as they try out new pursuits, assume leadership roles, and take calculated intellectual risks to see what resonates and moves them toward mastery. Elgin Academy graduates make discerning college choices based on not only prestige, but also personal fit, and enroll at a diverse array of colleges and universities nationwide and worldwide, equipped with the know-how and self-confidence that stems from coming of age in this individually attuned community. They go forth as productive, conscientious, and mindful young people who continue to hone their understanding of world and self— a lifelong process that stands as the abiding gift of their Elgin Academy education.

DEAR FRIENDS It is my honor to welcome you to Extravaganza 41! We are thrilled to be back at Pearl Banquets, a venue of Pearlshire Capital of which Trustee Rehan Zaid ‘07 is Director and Principal. Rehan is considered one of the “next-gen” leaders in hospitality in Greater Chicago by Real Estate Bisnow, so we are confident that your evening will reflect Rehan’s passion for classic elegance and extraordinary service. I want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of this event. Chairs Bill and Lanette Padula have been true models of leadership for our Extravaganza Committee. Marnie Kut, Director of Development, and her staff have played a crucial role in supporting the committee’s work. Our committee of volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the evening. We thank the faculty and students who are here tonight as volunteers to assist with registration and the auction. It is heartening to see students, teachers, staff, administrators, parents, alumni, trustees, and friends of Elgin Academy come together as Hilltoppers to support our cherished school. Appropriately, We Are Hilltoppers is the theme of Extravaganza 41. This theme speaks to the union of all Elgin Academy stakeholders, past and present. This year we have been engaged in strategic planning where we are looking ahead to the future. As the planning process unfolded, we came to the realization that you can never envision the future without also reflecting on the past. Our school has a rich and vibrant heritage built on the shoulders of generations of Hilltoppers. EA students have always been extraordinary individuals--productive, mindful, and conscientious. As we enter into our 179th year, we are acutely aware that the future of our school rests on our ability to provide transformative experiences that meet the needs of the Hilltoppers who currently occupy our desks and those who will do so in the future. The world is a rapidly changing place, and Elgin Academy is challenged to adapt to those changes. More than ever we must address variances in student learning and foster the social-emotional health of students. We will not only broaden our diversity but will better prepare our students for participation in a global environment by expanding our international program. Redesigned learning spaces in all three divisions will help our students more freely work collaboratively and creatively. And finally, as our families grapple with increasing demands on their time, we hope to add amenities, like driver’s education, to better serve our students and their parents. To grow into the future, we need your support. When you bid on silent and live auction items tonight you will be part of a long legacy of giving. For forty-one years, those who share a love for Elgin Academy have opened their wallets at Extravaganza for the benefit of Hilltoppers. I know tonight will be no exception. I thank you in advance for your attendance and your generous donations. Have a fun evening and bid high. Sincerely, Seth Hanford, Head of School

THANK YOU! We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you for joining us tonight at Extravaganza 41 in order to support and celebrate the students, faculty, and staff of Elgin Academy. It was our humble honor to be asked to chair this year’s event. We realize that we could not orchestrate such a memorable evening without help. Therefore, we would also like to take a moment to thank this year’s volunteers and staff of the Extravaganza committee. We personally know that this evening would not be such a success or even possible without their dedication and tremendous efforts. Tonight, we personally come together as a community for an evening of celebration, enjoyment, and laughter to toast the friendships and relationships we have built over the years. Your support tonight will contribute to the long-standing heritage of Elgin Academy’s faculty and academic programs that develop our students into Hilltoppers. Every generous donation assures that each student is given the opportunity to go forth as productive, conscientious, and mindful young people who continue to hone their understanding of world and self. AUCTION INFORMATION Auction Rules Silent Auction items and raffle tickets will be recorded on wireless technology provided by BidPal. Live Auction and donations to our paddle raises are not recorded in the BidPal device/application. Elgin Academy requires that all items be paid in full at the auction. Payments may be made with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. Credit card payments will be subject to a 4% convenience fee. All sales are final. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used one year from March 10, 2018. According to the Internal Revenue Service, only the amount paid for an auction prize “in excess of the actual cash value of the prize” is tax deductible. All values specified at the auction are based on a good-faith estimate of each item’s fair market value. Donors contributing goods and services to be used in the Auction may be eligible for charitable tax deduction(s) to the extent allowed by law. Check-out will begin at 10:00 PM. Attendees may choose to pre-authorize their credit card at check-in. You may pick up your items at the conclusion of the auction after showing an Extravaganza Volunteer a paid receipt at the auction display table at the time of departure. In the event that Auction items need to be packaged and shipped to the owner’s preferred address by Elgin Academy, the winner will be responsible, in advance, for all shipping and handling expenses.

BIDPAL This year we are pleased to be using BidPal, an interactive, wireless, automated silent auction bidding process. With BidPal, you can bid anytime, from anywhere at the event, using an application downloaded to your smartphone. You can bid on items, watch bids and be instantaneously alerted when you have been outbid. At the end of the auction, you know exactly what you have won. Look for volunteers with a green lanyard to assist you with BidPal.

RAISE YOUR PADDLES! FACULTY STAFF COMPENSATION FUND

Each year at Extravaganza we take time to support our most treasured asset, the faculty and staff of Elgin Academy, with a paddle raise for the Faculty Staff Compensation Endowment Fund. Donations at all levels will be taken at the beginning of the Live Auction and will be placed directly into the Fund. This fund is ultimately used for various purposes related to compensation and ultimately is in place to help recruit and retain our dedicated faculty and staff. We are grateful to our faculty and staff for their commitment to Elgin Academy and the vital role they play in guiding students of all ages to become comfortable as thinkers and doers in school and community. Each day they are hard at work helping our students develop the key characteristics of Hilltoppers. Under their guidance, our students become individuals who are secure, disciplined, creative in collaboration, compassionate, and dedicated. Let’s show our faculty and staff how much we appreciate them by raising those paddles high tonight!

FUND THE FUTURE FOR OUR STUDENTS

We are excited to pursue renovations in North Hall, Sears Hall, and Edwards Hall over the next two years as part of our enduring commitment to enhancing the student experience. This is a continuation of work that we have begun which has included the addition of air conditioning to North and Sears Halls. This spring we will engage an architect who will combine already existing design concepts to develop a plan of action and provide bid documents. We hope to begin work within the next year, possibly even this summer, as we simultaneously embark on a longer range facilities plan that will guide our beautiful campus’ next stage. This evening, we are raising funds to support the hiring of the architect by conducting a paddle raise at the conclusion of the Live Auction. Please raise your paddle high in support of the next phase of creating a positive environment for our students.
