40 Elgin Academy March 11, 2017 | Pearl Banquets, Roselle
is the Fox River Valley’s preschool through grade 12 independent school where taking learning personally defines the collective ethos and covenant that unites all students and teachers, parents and staff members, administrators and trustees. Within intentionally small-scaled classrooms, Elgin Academy students learn to be secure in themselves,
disciplined in their thinking, creative in their collaboration, compassionate toward others, and dedicated in their efforts as they contribute as thinkers and doers in school and the community. Families from across Chicago’s northwestern suburbs and exurbs find at Elgin Academy a cherished oasis from the perceived impersonality and over-scaled local public schools. Elgin Academy students in every division pursue active learning, testing new ideas and securing trust with each other and their teachers as they try out new pursuits, assume leadership roles, and take calculated intellectual risks to see what resonates and moves them toward mastery. Elgin Academy graduates make discerning college choices based on not only prestige, but also personal fit, and enroll at a diverse array of colleges and universities nationwide and worldwide, equipped with the know-how and self-confidence that stems from coming of age in this individually attuned community. They go forth as productive, conscientious, and mindful young people who continue to hone their understanding of world and self— a lifelong process that stands as the abiding gift of their Elgin Academy education.
Elgin Academy Mission Statement Elgin Academy is a preschool-12th grade, independent, collegepreparatory, coeducational day school committed to academic excellence and developing the full potential of each student. Through a proactive partnership among faculty, parents, and students in a nurturing, dynamic, challenging, and diverse community, the Academy creates an environment where students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become intellectually engaged and confident about their places in the world.

dear friends Welcome to Extravaganza 40! In the spring of 1978, a committee of well over fifty members launched what Frank Hogan, Head of School at that time, called “the most ambitious single fund raising project” in the school’s history. Mr. Hogan went on to say in his introductory letter that “at the heart of our enterprise is our commitment to the intellectual and personal growth of our students.” I could easily make these same two claims today. Extravaganza is still our most ambitious fundraiser and 40 years later, in fact throughout our long history, our commitment to our students remains paramount. Attendees at that first Extravaganza were part of something truly historic. And from that night forward, our annual Extravaganza has always been a much anticipated event. It is an evening that continually reflects the true spirit of community at Elgin Academy. This year, as in previous years, under the enthusiastic leadership of an Extravaganza Committee, parents, teachers, staff, administrators, and trustees unite for the common goal of supporting Elgin Academy’s unique learning community. Although there are similarities in the first and 40th Extravaganzas, a lot has changed at Elgin Academy over time. The Lower School opened in 1984 and moved into a renovated North Hall after boarding was discontinued in 1987. This latter change required remodeling in Sears Hall to provide a home for a growing Middle School. The Early Childhood program opened in the fall of 1999, bringing preschoolers to our campus. The Harold D. Rider Family Media, Science, and Fine Arts Center opened in 2008, bringing a distinctly modern look to our campus.
Of course, changes at the Academy have not just been structural in nature. Over the past 40 years, administration and faculty have worked together to revise academic and co-curricular programs, strengthen instruction, and implement extensive changes in technology, to meet the needs of today’s learners. Elgin Academy students have changed too, over time, and we are continually challenged to determine how to best serve the needs of students who are not only charged with mastering content, but are also expected to be producing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from a wide variety of subjects and sources. The young people at the Academy are truly deserving of your support. Extravaganza is always an evening where your generous spirit humbles me. I can assure you that those of us who have been entrusted with your student’s learning will continue to take that charge personally and will be good stewards of your generosity. Thank you to the Development Office and their team of volunteers who worked so hard to make this evening special. Trustee Rehan Zaid ’07, Director and Principal with Pearlshire Capital, has ably served as Honorary Chair of Extravaganza 40. Our elegant venue for this evening is very much the result of Rehan’s keen eye for style and class. With that final thought, enjoy your evening and bid very high! Seth Hanford

play the pot of gold raffle! The winner will receive $10,000 to spend in the Live Auction! You may bid on multiple items, and any money not spent in the Live Auction will be deposited into the Faculty Staff Compensation fund. Raise your paddle high to support Elgin Academy. Tickets are 1 for $50, and 3 for $125. The drawing will be held prior to the Live Auction. Tickets will be sold on March 11th only and you must be present to win. Auction Information Auction Rules Silent Auction items and raffle tickets will be recorded on wireless technology provided by BidPal. Live Auction and donations to the Faculty Staff Compensation Fund are not recorded in the BidPal device/application. Elgin Academy requires that all items be paid in full at the auction. Payments may be made with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. All sales are final. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used one year from March 11, 2017. According to the Internal Revenue Service, only the amount paid for an auction prize “in excess of the actual cash value of the prize” is tax deductible. All values specified at the auction are based on a good-faith estimate of each item’s fair market value. Donors contributing goods and services to be used in the Auction may be eligible for charitable tax deduction(s) to the extent allowed by law. Check-out will begin at 10:00 PM. Attendees may choose to pre-authorize their credit card at check-in. You may pick up your items at the conclusion of the auction after showing an Extravaganza Volunteer a paid receipt at the auction display table at the time of departure. In the event that Auction items need to be packaged and shipped to the owner’s preferred address by Elgin Academy, the winner will be responsible, in advance, for all shipping and handling expenses.
BIDPAL This year we are pleased to be using BidPal, an interactive, wireless, automated silent auction bidding process. With BidPal, you can bid anytime, from anywhere at the event, using an application downloaded to your smartphone. You can bid on items, watch bids and be instantaneously alerted when you have been outbid. At the end of the auction, you know exactly what you have won. Look for volunteers with a green lanyard to assist you with BidPal.
Auction Information LIVE & SILENT AUCTIONS Live Auction Rules The Live Auction will begin after the serving of dinner on March 11, 2017 and will continue until all items have been auctioned. Doors will open at 5:30 PM for previewing items prior to bidding. All bidding in the Live Auction will require a bid number which will be given to you at check-in. Silent Auction Rules Each item in the Silent Auction is assigned a number and listed on your BidPal application. A description of the auction item and the assigned number is also on the display table and listed in this catalog. Persons wishing to place a bid should enter all bids and maximum bids on the BidPal application. Bids may be placed in any of the event’s designated areas. Each increase in bid must equal or exceed the minimum figure stated in order to constitute a valid bid. Only an authorized person can nullify a bid. All sections of the Silent Auction will close promptly at 9:45 PM. Check-out will open at 10:00 PM. The closing bid constitutes the winning bid.

Faculty Staff Compensation Fund
Each year at Extravaganza we take time to support our most treasured asset, the Faculty and Staff of Elgin Academy, with a spot auction for the Faculty Staff Compensation Endowment Fund. Donations at all levels will be taken at the beginning of the Live Auction and will be placed directly into the Fund. This fund is used for various purposes related to compensation and ultimately is in place to help recruit and retain our wonderful teachers. We thank our faculty and staff who personify the Academy’s mission and core values, and we thank them for taking learning personally to enrich the lives of each and every student at Elgin Academy. Let’s show our Faculty and Staff how much we appreciate them by raising those paddles high tonight!
