Annual Report 2015-2016

Our promise is an expansive one and is based on providing each student with active opportunities. It is only through your big-hearted support that we can create these experiences.

Dear Friends:

Thank you so much for your generous support of Elgin Academy. Your altruism takes many forms, all of which are needed to meet our promise of taking learning personally. No matter what shape your involvement took during this past year, I want to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of our students. Our promise is an expansive one and is based on providing each student with active opportunities. As a foundation, they learn the facts and skills that are the hallmarks of a rounded, liberal arts education. They build upon that foundation by expanding their knowledge and joyfully digging deeper to critically understand subtlety. They take this wisdom outside of our walls by collaborating with those around them, in Elgin, the surrounding area, and the world, not only to address people’s needs, but, more importantly, to alleviate the conditions that may have left them wanting. We are so proud of our ambitious students, who see their education not as an end, but rather as the foundation of their ability to understand and change the world. It is only through your big-hearted support that we can create these experiences. For this reason, I am so appreciative of your generous backing and look forward to continuing to work with you to provide limitless opportunities to Elgin Academy students. Thank you again, from all of us who have the privilege of being here everyday. Seth Hanford Head of School

Dear Elgin Academy:

I would like to thank all the Elgin Academy alumni, parents, faculty & staff, Board of Trustees, and supporters who made incredible gifts during the 2015-2016 school year. These gifts enable Elgin Academy to further its mission and promise by helping create a learning environment that is taking learning personally. Your generosity will keep our community moving forward for our students and faculty of today as well as for the next generation of Hilltoppers. Thank you again for being an important part of Elgin Academy, where your investment will create EA students who are and will continue to be “disciplined in their thinking, creative in their collaboration, compassionate toward others, and dedicated to their efforts.” Sincerely, Keith Rauschenberger Chairman, Board of Trustees

thank you

JOHN MCDONALD ’43

Elgin Academy was recently honored to be the recipient of a planned gift of $400,000 from John B. McDonald ’43. Mr. McDonald was a loyal Hilltopper who cherished his time at Elgin Academy. After graduation, he served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. McDonald was a tinkerer and entrepreneur by nature who owned the Ridgewood Drive-In Theater and Jack’s Radio and TV Service. He was also employed as a telemetry technician, in management, and as an instructor in the RCA Missile Test Project for a time. This past spring, Mr. McDonald’s son, Nelson McDonald, visited the Elgin Academy campus that his father held so dear, and presented the Academy with this generous gift. During his time on campus, Nelson met some of our students and got to know the school his father loved so well. We are so excited and thankful for the chance this will give us to provide student opportuntites and accomplish some of the work in the campus master plan that is currently under development. We plan to utilize $200,000 for our newly established Taking Learning Personally Merit Scholarship Program and the remaining $200,000 will be focused toward our campus master plan. We thank Mr. McDonald and the McDonald family for this exceedingly generous gift and for their support of Elgin Academy.

Thank you to our volunteers! The Elgin Academy community of volunteers is an integral part of the taking learning personally experience that is the hallmark of an EA education. By giving of their expertise and their very valuable time to the Academy, our volunteers support our students and their learning as well as the faculty and the entire Elgin Academy community.

Through a proactive partnership among faculty, parents, and students in a nurturing, dynamic, challenging, and diverse community, the Academy creates an environment where students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become intellectually engaged and confident about their places in the world.

is the Fox River Valley’s preschool through grade 12 independent school where taking learning personally defines the collective ethos and covenant that unites all students and teachers, parents and staff members, administrators and trustees. Within intentionally small-scaled classrooms, Elgin Academy students learn to be secure in themselves, disciplined in their thinking, creative in their collaboration, compassionate toward others, and dedicated in their efforts as they contribute as thinkers and doers in school and the community. Families from across Chicago’s northwestern suburbs and exurbs find at Elgin Academy a cherished oasis from the perceived impersonality and over-scaled local public schools. Elgin Academy students in every division pursue active learning, testing new ideas and securing trust with each other and their teachers as they try out new pursuits, assume leadership roles, and take calculated intellectual risks to see what resonates and moves them toward mastery. Elgin Academy graduates make discerning college choices based on not only prestige, but also personal fit, and enroll at a diverse array of colleges and universities nationwide and worldwide, equipped with the know-how and self-confidence that stems from coming of age in this individually attuned community. They go forth as productive, conscientious, and mindful young people who continue to hone their understanding of world and self— a lifelong process that stands as the abiding gift of their Elgin Academy education.
