Teaching actively leads directly to active learning. Each year, Elgin Academy families, alumni, and friends donate to Annual Fund to support EA in achieving this goal. Contributions to the Annual Fund make an immediate and enriching impact on the educational experience for each and every student. Your gift supplements the resources of the operating budget and provides the margin of excellence that makes teaching actively possible to give students the opportunity to learn and grow. Each gift has a longer term impact as well, which enhances the experiences of students in the future, and leaves a lasting legacy of philanthropy.

Teaching Actively At the heart of our school, our teachers are utilizing creative techniques to engage and empower our students in the learning process. Every day, EA students benefit from a faculty who is teaching actively and helping our students realize how they successfully learn. From the Middle School flipped classroom to the Upper School mock trial of Oedipus, or a live opera performance to introduce Lower School students to the culture of Italy, teaching actively is an integral part of an EA education. Gifts to the Annual Fund allow us to focus on three areas that best enable active teaching: curriculum enhancements, faculty professional development, and technology for the classroom.
Curriculum enhancements Upper School biology lessons take on new meaning when students observe the development of baby chickens from egg to hatching. Early Childhood students work together to experiment on how propellers work. Middle School students collaborate in Project Based Learning where multi-grade teams work together to take an idea from conception to investment over the course of six weeks.
Professional Development Our teachers are learners, too. Each year the faculty attends conferences and other educational events to enhance the classroom experience. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide support for a large variety of professional development experiences. For example in 2016, eight teachers representing each division attended the IDEA:TE Conference which focuses on integrating traditional and emerging technologies into the classroom. The EA attendees are sharing their skills to deepen students’ understanding in all divisions and disciplines.
Technology Technology is a valuable tool in active teaching. Gifts to Annual Fund have supported the purchase of new iMacs for the Middle School, upgraded sound equipment for Edwards Hall to enhance the presentations of our annual Senior Speeches, and the addition of a Ronin camera to our videography department.
Ways to Give The Annual Fund Campaign for the 2016-2017 school year will take place during the months of October and November and will end on November 29 which is Giving Tuesday, a national day of philanthropy. To make the biggest impact in this school year, we ask that you give or pledge during the campaign, however, gifts are accepted through the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2017. You may give your gift in any of the following ways: Cash Gifts Gifts to Elgin Academy can be made via cash or check (payable to Elgin Academy). Credit Card Gifts Elgin Academy accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Gifts of Stock By giving appreciated stock that you have held for more than one year, you will be eligible to receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full market value, and you can also avoid capital gains tax.
Matching Gifts Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees to EA. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift. All gifts are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
#GI ING TUESDAY NOV. 29 Join in on #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving. Support Elgin Academy on this global day of philanthropy. Annual Fund gifts for this fiscal year will be accepted through June 30, 2017.
