WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three types of developable surfaces are: cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. A cylinder appears as parallel lines in the development. A cylindrical surface can be formed by extruding the profile curve in a parallel extrusion. Cones consist of all lines connecting the bottom surface with a single central point, known as a central extrusion. Pyramids are seen as discreet counterparts of smooth cones, just as prisms are seen as discrete counterparts of cylinders. Therefore one can learn a lot about the development of a cone by studying the unfolding of a pyramid. Tangent surfaces are created by intersecting the surface with a general plane creating a polygon that has a sharp turning point at the intersection point.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) Understanding developable surfaces is critical in understand architectural geometry because it allows the architect to understand and therefore manipulate surfaces in order to create unique and interesting designs. It also provides the architect with a basic understanding of the egenieering process in creating the desired designs so as to not design something visually pleasing but virtually impossible to manifest physically. As seen in the California: Stage Set for John Jaspere- by AEDS/Ammar Eloueini, the basic principles of panelizing are applied in order to create the outrageous design.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is a generative medium that comes with its own host of restraints and possibilities. It has the potential to narrow the gap between representation and building, affording a hypothetically seamless connection between design and making, It changes the understanding of two dimensional representation by allowing the user to calibrate between virtual model and physical artifact, simply allowing one form of two-dimensional representation to be replaced by another. Digital fabrication allows for pioneers to experiment with fabrication processes on a small scale, using computerized processes, streamlining production and allowing projects to be realized within the reach of many practitioners and students.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) Firstly, folding turns a flat surface into a three-dimensional one. When folds are introduced into otherwise planar materials, those materials gain stiffness and rigidity, can span distance, and can often be selfsupporting. It expands the three-dimensional vocabulary of surface by naturally producing deformation and inflection. Quite frankly, it is materially economical, visually appealing, and effective at multiple scales. It has a long history in craft-based practiced and product design, has a theoretical concept, formal tactic, and the most literally material operation for the formal expression of building design.
