brief Releaf propose to install in Melbourne City Square which located in CBD area, at the corner of Swanston St and Collins St. City square was built for a major civic open space in the heart of city. Before Federation Square took over as Melbourne’s central meeting place, City square had the honor of being the city’s central piazza. In 1968 it has been installed as a temporary square; 1976 became a permanent square; 1990 about half of it was sold for the development of Westin Hotel. After several times of redeveloped, now it is a pedestrian plaza and former civic centre. Collins St was for a long time the centre of finance in Australia and is home to various banks of insurance. Due to its location, the peak time is major use by office workers during their lunch break. There is benches that office workers or pedestrians used to sit on, but it does not seems comfy enough for someone who really need to rest. Releaf is a rocking chair made using the technique of traditional boat construction to build a very organic shape. Releaf aim to provide engagers a sense of ‘release’ plus ‘relief’. By looking at the urban lifestyle, people repeat their daily life regularly and having workplace stress. Responding to the site, Releaf design for people who deserve to have a real rest and relaxation treatment. Releaf inspired by a falling leaf at the site. The act of releasing from a tree branch and free falling to the ground. The way how it free fall and carry by wind, swing along the wind gently. The meditative act seems like a leaf is dying at the same time, it has been relieved (in a perspective of human life). When people sitting and focus on balancing their body with the rocking chair, their brain might stop thinking of work or stress, just like a children stop crying in front of a candy.

research: precedents

Cocoon by Tanya Shukstelinsky place au changement is a project inviting neighbours of the site to build their habitat in an open space and giving a futuristic living experience. Other than presenting futuristic way of living, it influence me to choose a site that is similar to it while this project showing the group of people are come for the same purpose and their neighbourhood relationship. - Melbourne city square is a place of people gather from workplace around.

‘ Space can be divide for people who need space anytime, anywhere.’ This is what I have digested after knowing Cocoon. Cocoon is a impact space for one that focus on creating private space in public.

initial design concept

PLAY – a playful sapce build with a strong structure and different types of fabric to create different quality of light to the interior. The aim of layering up the spaces is to bring people up and nearer to trees which provide shades.

8

STANDING SLEEP (part of PLAY)– a sleeping pod that has to sleep with a standing pose. Base and wall is design to cut in an angle that allow people to stand and lean against with a comfy position. This design is specific to people who like to rest for a while. Its to avoid late to a date or back to work after break time up. 9

design development

These are the shapes on how it forms. They are plan, elevation view of seat piece and elevation of bottom piece rocking base.

form of 2 pieces that combine and create a whole chair

Initial design of a human body contour seats at the top and a rocking leg that allow to rock in one direction forward and backward only.

Final looks of the chair that has a smooth curve for its base for rocking and careful design of its height which to keep its balancity while it can rock in any direction.

First design for framing structure to put at the middle of shells to maintain the shape of bending planks.

To fix the problem of having a fragile structure in the first design that cannot afford high pressure, this is the improvement of it that refer to how people build of airplane’s wing.

Due to its organic shape, it is hard to place the frames without any holder. Therefore, to improve the sustainability and easier to build. This is the final looks which has inspired by the construction of boat. It has added with a backbone that fix frames to the specific positions then can be combine with ‘shells’ easily.

http://deanta.eu/carvel-chair.html

Carvel built or carvel planking is a method of boat building where hull planks are fastened edge to edge, gaining support from the frame and forming a smooth surface. Planking is applied over the frames, using screw bolts to hold each plank in place. Planks are fastened wherever they touch on the hull's framework -- at the stem, along the keel, at the stern, and to each frame -- but not to each other. Instead, when planking is complete, the hull is caulked, usually with cotton, which will act to seal the seams as the planks swell after the boat is launched. By forcing each plank against its neighbor, caulking also helps makes a boat's structure more rigid. (by bending plank into a certain curve, steam bend in plastic bag is the best option to let the planks strengthen and allow to twist. )

To build this rocking sleeper chair which has contoured top and rocking base, it has to laminate into two pieces of different shapes plywood. The way of building these is Two-Part Bending Forms technique. Create the two pieces of a male(convex) /female(concave) form that match perfectly, while accounting for the thickness of the laminate layers. The flexible plywood is subjected to glue and pressure when its ready to clamp between male and female formers. Due to this pressure when the mould is released the flexible plywood remains in the moulded shape when sections of flexi-ply are glued together.
