THE GROWTH

THE GROWTH contains 3 projects that have undertaken in the first year second semester Studio 2. Documenting the understanding and development of the projects, Through the projects, you can see the growing of thoughts between space and interior into the design. Also, growing of different techniques to express thinking, skills to develop and communicate design.

EVERYDAY CHOREOGRAPHIES A 3 weeks project asked to explore the creation of interior spaces through gestures and movements. A performative everyday act of doing something that embodies of social relations, of ideological interpolations and emotional which all fit in to the ways we inhabit and designed interior. Record and analyse the bodily interaction into a space in certain act, gestures, movements that changing in time. Physical movement that carry information or purpose scripted by the surrounding context and existing objects. This project learned to investigate and documenting the everyday choreograohies through mapping and filming. 2

THE SPACE BETWEEN To begin, this 4 weeks project start with living skin intensive workshop to develop a ‘living skin’. This part has worked in group of 3 to experience and perceive a complex space practically -- our body. Due to the temporal and ephemeral conditions of human body, we explore the relationship of space between bodies or body to things. Thus, the rest of the project completed individually. Capture the ‘living skin’ in a 2-dimentional sectional drawing which allowed to explore the intersections and connections emerged from the created skin with human body and its space between. Bring the concept from the living skin and further develop into a physical and crafted environment. Build a space to inhabit that engaged with a chosen site that has its temporality and dynamism which also including the connection to existing infrastructures. Techniques used including sectional drawing, site study, analysis drawing, documenting through filming and experimenting.

INTERVAL Interval is a 6 weeks project as the last project of the semester. It engages with 2015 Melbourne Festival. Consider of a specific practitioner involved with the festival as a client. Develop a proposal for a temporary pavilion based on their practice to be sited in the forecourt of ACCA (Australian Centre of Contemporary Art). Before the proposed design, gone through a range of research to have a deeper understanding of practitioner and their practices. Site investigation and exploration needed for site analysis and documentation for drawings. Made an apparatus which facilitates practitioner’s practice and a poster illustrated research of client. This project include of research, level of understanding, illustration of design analysis drawings, experiential imageries and atmospheric/experimental model making.

E V E R Y D A Y CHOREOGRAPHIES There are 3 choreographic films and 3 groups of mappings produced. Each are different movemetns recorded. Mapping are done in live while watching and edited into digital drawing eventually. The first movement is human traffic in the most crowded road in Melbourne city which is the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street. Since Flinders St Station sited next to the street, early in the morning especially weekdays there are a lot of people took train and tram to work or school. This mapping shown how pedestrians move around and change direction in crowd. They accelerate, decelerate, keep away, collide, forward and stop. And follow by the traffic light, pedestrians stay or walk, act different in vertical and horizontal of intersection of road. Was in a large scale of invertigation in both vertical and horizontal street, then developed to one way pedestrians. Applied technique of create gradient to show the movement. Second, is the wall cleaners cleaning the old bricks wall in front of a gym room. Was focussing the whole body movement of climbing up a ladder

and gestures of brushing wall. Spraying water to the wall and brush at the same time by using both hands. Thus, the 2-dimentional drawing has develop to a larger scale of how a man passes a pail around his body carefully due to the unconvenience of standing on a ladder. Aware of his hands forming a space between fingers which is rare to our hand normally work. Lastly, is a series of movement captured from an advertising character who working in the morning advertised for the carpark of a building. The man standing at the sidewalk and greet to the people driving in their car and pass by. Doing the larger gestures as people can see like wave, directoring to the carpark, bow and so on. All that can be motions of a attention seeker and body language.

THE SPACE B E T W E E The space between started with an investigation on bodies to develop a ‘living skin” as inspiration. Creation of living skin is an idea of marking the touches and relationship visibly between bodies. Somehow a hug can be a very big warmy action that could give people a secure feeling, so we want to bring out the psycological feeling to be visible which is just a second or minute of action we can see. My group create living skin in a performative way. We first wrap our whole body with white plastic bags, and press the balloons filled with liquid paint when we were doing the hug action. Until the balloon squeenzed and blow out, imprinted our touches part on our body with leaving marks of paint. Due to the body shape, the paint didn’t show up on the part where the space left out which means part of out bodies didn’t touch each other. By watching the recording of our ‘living skin’, we create a sectional drawing of it with our body. By working individually, I chose to draw the nervous system showing in sectional is because of the idea of touch has a relationship with nerves that sensor everything touched our skin. I focused on the invisible body part that wondering what is happening in the body under our skin when we hug. The little things that we cannot see or feel but they work importantly like transmitting the feeling to our brain yet no one aware of them. Idea developed from ‘hug’ that telling the moment of touch just a second of feeling. Then, a task of create a space to inhabit that can be activate by a dynamism environment. First, need to find a site. I was looking for a site where has a good quality of natural light. The reason of choosing natural light is because it is temporal and ever changing by weather and allow to play with shadow. The site i have found is a staircase one of three in front of

N

Victoria State Library that nearer to QV. It is sitting at the side and people passed by of stayed to have lunch or nap on the grass next to the stairs. Concept development is to explore the space between body that has experienced in living skin workshop ---hug. Using the idea of ‘toches body painted and space between body without touches remain white (on white plastic)’ to further develop a same meaning of concept. To explain, design of space to inhabit is a string art work, bunch of strings allow light go through the gaps that is uncover and create beautiful shadow in the site where has enough light quality. So, when the strong sunlight in the noon fall on our skin we can see it but we can’t touch yet we can feel when we stay longer under the light coming from the gaps. We feel warm as we hug longer and feel the warm of each other body temperature. In the other way, the shadow became the blank space without touch and use like a shield from the sunlight. First of all the design, it was a frame of string crafted vertically and places to a site that has crowded human traffic so when people go through it, they need to use their hand to push aside the string just like you do to a window curtain and walk through the opening space. So, when this big frame of white string keep opening and close, it create a ‘living canvas’ which keep changing in every second. Thus, work it into a more habitable way, extend it into a pathway that form a connection to the existing stairs in the site. Eventually, “SHADE” produced and it then constructed with different size of frame standing on 4 landing each, connected with a whole wall and top of strings like a tunnel when people engaging.

I N T E R V A L In this project, my client is Ping Chong. He is an American Chinese who live in China Town. Graduated as an visual artist yet international recognized as a theatre director. He also major as an choreographer. Ping’s work interested on civic, political, cultural and social topic. As an American born Chinese, he claims himself living in two cultures so he usually seems thing different perspective. Ping Chong + Company has a mission of explore the intersections of history, race, art and technology in the modern world. Ping’s work is special as acting in a different way like talk show or story teller... His actors used to be speaking in a rhythm style or adding some choreographies to make the talk potentially presented. For example one of his show called “Undesirable Elements”, it is an ongoing series. It present like a community and specific interview. Examining the issues of culture and identity of individuals who are outsiders with their mainstream community. Undesirable Elements not performed by professional actor, each production is made with a local host organization and local participants. It is a chanber piece of story telling, telling the things that happening everyday surrounding us but not showing on news and no one care. Discussing the individual experiences together in achronological narrative meeting on both political and personal issues. Development process running by Ping Chong Company artists conducting intensive interview. From his work, it is strongly shown that there lots of problem that pursuing peace. At the same time, my research showing of his chinese first name which looks geometry and inspired me of the structure of a theatrical pavilion for him. Then I research of its meaning and it surprisingly came

out with the meaning of peaceful and balance. 平 . To develop, I build a 3-dimentional model as an experiment. Due to the reason of size and structure to fit in the ACCA existing forecourt environment, it has been contrasted and simplify into just a stroke of his chinese name character which looks like a verbal qualitied space. The concept then born as a SPEAKER. The idea of speack out loud as Ping Chong speak thru his show by driving his speaking right to tell people story and awake their awareness. Speaker is a pavilion playing at night. It sited next to nearer to Malthouse Theatre instead of ACCA and between the two entrance of Malthouse. Kind of advertising from Malthouse Theatre since their style are different which is good to introduce Ping’s work to people who intersted on theatre show. Ping’s stage usually constructed in a limited space and playing with lighting and projection. As a temporary contruction, it use of simple building of stage materials in base, with a huge staircase as seats. The most imporatnt point is the white fabric that covered as a skin of Speaker. At night, it will be seen like a glowing speaker and changing color when the artificial lighting from the stage change. It has a hidden meaning of ‘Truth cannot be cover just like the light penentrates beyond the fabric.’. Under the stage, there is a space which is 3metres height is a private space for performers at night and a communication space for Ping Chong with interviewer. The privacy of it build with one way mirror that allow Ping and performers to observe their audience yet people cannot see them from the outside.
