introduction Enter the wild documenting ranges of practice and process aim to design cabins for a Kenya tourist lodge project at the end. Through the development, you can see how a space/ an interior is designed from taking ‘relaxation’ as the required condition and practice the element to form relax. Then, understand and knowing why atmosphere can take control of the situation and people’s feeling in a space. And so it is so important to an interior. Explore, investigate and create the atmosphere. End up with setting up the ecology that aim to be used and therefore start designing the cabin. This is a Mt Kenya, Lake Michaelson tourist lodge project for Kenya. The lodge project was borne out of an urgent need to lift the international status of Mt. Kenya. To provide environmentally sound accommodation to mountain climbers and create a benchmark for new standards in design. Lake Michaelson is situated to an altitude of 4000m on the north-east side of Mt Kenya. The lake is about 430m long and 320m wide. It is characterized by cold temperatures, thin dry air. During the day, temperature range between 5-15 degree celcius and drop around 10 degree celcius under cloud cover. At night is below freezing. Spatial requirements for cabin are - overnight accommodation for up to 10 guests - communual style or cabins to sleep 2 or 3 people - kitchen, living space - bathrooms, toilets - laundry/ wet space - lockable storage fountain climbing gear and first aid treatment

escape

Design a relaxation/ living’ escape space or micro interior that will be sited in front of state library. On the terrace of state library is an area that can get a very good quatity of natural light in the midday. Since it is located in the city, there is people walking pass all the day or sitting on the grass/bench. Sometimes, there is street artists performing during the day or night. Under this situation, design for escape would include the effect of senses to get the relaxation stage. what is relax? how to be relax?

8

01. This is a space created by just a layer of fabric. Fabric is holding up by wood frames structure and two bended wood rocking leg. It is softly rocking while the wind blow and fabric is well flowing along. Trying to produce a kind of quietness that can transfer from visually to mentally among the crowdy environment.

02. A freestanding hammock with cover on top made the day relax by lay youself inside and carry by the breathable fabric and hiding from the sunlight. Although the upper part is covered it is still able to experience this open area, hanging in the air which would not be too hot.

9

03. How about living in a sponge? Wanted to be alone but feel companied. A micro volume of space that fit people in and semi-isolate from the outside environment. Is a space that filter ot the things that dislike to be with in some private time from the exterior which are direct sunlight and human interaction. In the other side, the sound, the weather and the smell of grass retain.

04. As a ‘direct sunlight hater’ I always stand under the shadow if I have chance. Here is a membrane to carry anywhere that can be my walking piece of shadow. Inhabiting in shadow and away from distress is relax.

10

05. Another kind of relax is being physically lazy. Here is an hammock that can transform to be a picnic bench. the simple idea of ‘eat & sleep’ during the lazy mode on.

hybrid atmospheres In this phase, choose 2 projects from the research that achieve in expressing the atmospheric condition and learn to describe them by writing. Then, create the atmosphere and expresses them through model making by hand. During the task, have to take photographs of the space that bring out the atmosphere that is interesting. The research below is one of the precedent that effective to whole part of the project. The way it reacts to the site and its shape. A design that let the nature interact with interior.

13

To describe the atmosphere that I wanted to create is the unusual light quality. Such as a sudden pop up sunlight drawn from a direction, where constantly change by time and repeating everyday. It changes itself and creates the bright and dark zone. When it comes to the man constructed structure it might be unaware to most of the people but if you do, it is beautiful sometimes. The first 2 images are about the some which is the sunlight brightly shine from the side instead of top and above the object. It crop down and highlight parts of the surface looks like that is the way sun speaks. The other 2 iare both looks up to the ceiling. The light comes in from the window and slightly diffuse by the cutting of shape of the ceiling. Due to the materials different, the colour of natural lights looks warm and cool.

Unlike with the 4 on top, this group is a bit more creepy. The 2 is taken from a corner in RMIT, the space is surrounding by tall buildings which block out the natural light to get in. So there is spot light on 24 hours. The last 2 images are taken in Shrine of Remembrance. The space has purposely decorate to be grave. I like the way they use artificial lights that matches with the wall structure. which successfully create a space that is serious feeling and automatically makes people quiet.

14

hybrid atmospheres : materials & light Atmospheric model making and light studies. Focus on reflection and refraction of light. Experiment of using different colour and texture materials to find out how light travels and reflected in a space. At the same time, cloth, transparent straws, water testing out the effectiveness of refraction to the space.

play To further develop one of the light study (last row) from previous page. It was the atmosphere created by reflecting and refracting light through water on the ceiling and the water waves while wind blown. In this task, developing the studies by changing the flat ceiling into a bumpy surface. When putting a several pool of water on it. The uneven surface made the pools of water on top facing to the different directions and received the different amount of wind and light. Although the atmosphere came out a little bit different yet it works very well and the climate of the day does help on playing.

enter the wild

ETW is a series of cabin design received the inspiration from playscape. All cabins are aim to provide Kenya visitors an experience of living in the wild. Get rid of the ordinary shapes of building and space that are carefully designed for convinience that suied to daily living space. ETW are all influenced by the topogragh/ landforms and plants in the site. Playscape is the best way to imitate the exterior environment. Idea is the expansion of exterior and offer clients a greater possibility to fuse with the wild of the site. There is 4 cabins in a series, all of them are having the different interior that offer four different experience on each of them.

transform

is a cabin bring you closer to wild by giving you a wider vision of view 3 dimensionally while it transform to the day mode. The feature of this cabin is it can be open and close. As the temperature stimulates the growth of flower petals cells that cause flower open in the mid day and close at night. It functionally works during the weather change to overcome the local climate. For its structure part is inspired by tree. Although it looks geometrically but when people engage with it, from the motion or gestures you will see it seems like a man is climbing onto a tree. The sleeping hammock sort of represent the branch. You are able to swing your legs above the grass when it is in open mode. It is able to fit maximun 6 person including the ground level deck if sleeping bag is prepared.

30

31

Transform has its free standing legs which is affordable to be sited on slope. To explained how to engage with the unusual use of space. First of all, Have to open the folding door or stoop down to pass through the door if its close. Enter to the middle and keep walking up the slope until you get the height can reach to the cabin. Go up to the second level by using of the existing ladder. For the 2nd level, there is

more than half of the area is made of hammock including the huge one as a base. It is more net-like which offer the act of laying in the middle of air when it has transform into open mode. Program: Cabin for sleep maximum of 6 person.

is a cabin with a topographic form of ceiling. It’s concept come from the hills and natural landform under the sun. At noon, the sun shine brightly to the ground. Due to the landforms, sunlight is blocked by the higher hill and form shadow. Applying the theory to the cabin interior and flip over the hills structure to allow the sunlight play and create its art and increase the awareness of nature to people. Also the sunlight is unable to switch on and off, so people are engaging has to move themselves to the bright or dark zone filtered by the ceiling. The ceiling is simply built with interlocked wood panels and fabric curtain as wall divider to be installed on the 4 walls or interior to divide the space if needed. Except of being wall divider, it is also helps to warm up the temperature at night since the glass windowa are not good temperature insulator.

Front door is also a glass wall that can be fold-open up facing hill view. The other 3 sides of wall are having different height of window which people can choose to take a seat at their ideal point of view. Window is the connection between extrior and interior. It is important to know about how people would like to be sited and let which part of the body parallel to view because the vision made atmosphere and affect the feeling of people carry with. program: communual living space

triangulate

is a triangulated form, the form of cliff and cave. In the site that is full of hills, triangulate offers the experience to live in an inhabitable hills. Investigate the features and atmosphere of cave, they are all been use in this cabin partly. Cave has more privacy area which are suite to use as bathroom/toilet and sleeping room. For the cliff, theres staircase which is the triangulated slope allow people to get to the top easily. On 2nd storey, there is a big sliding window facing hills view and west. There is the best position to watch beautiful sunset. Spending time on the 2nd storey Looking outside the hills and sitting on the uneven floor, looking outside the hills and sitting on the uneven floor is also an act of letting your body to read the space. Which is unusual to have in the daily living.

is influences by the living space of the creatures living underground. The underground world is habitat of so many animanls that they make themselves. Scientist can find out the what kind of animal living in the hole by looking at the size of the entry holes. Contour is the cabin that specific for human. Build a habitat of human that is contoured to human body. Create of a natural style of living. Moreover, there is not much window in this cabin and the windows that it has are in the dimensions that has its limit that cannot full fill your field of vision. Trying to presents the recovery in the sense of sight when engager come out from the cabin.
