Chiang Mai 12/07/2010 - 06:21 PM

Sounds like music...

Is it possible to move to Buenos Aires, Thailand and Cape Town without giving up your life in Belgium? You keep your job and customers, but instead of attending real meetings, everything is done via conference calls and e-mail. Social media helps you stay in touch with your friends who come to visit you now and then. In the meantime, you go on a safari in South Africa, drink the most incredible wines in Argentina, and enjoy unbelievably cheap massages in Thailand. Visual cover Alex Vanhee

Impossible, you say. Well, Ine and Catherine would claim otherwise. Since February 2010, they have been living as ‘digital nomads’ on the other side of the world. This picture shows the real life in Chiang Mai and gives us the proof. Interested in finding out how they do it? Check www.nomadz.nu/traveljournal or follow their adventures on Facebook www.facebook.com/nomadznu

These stickers have adorned the streets of university city Chiang Mai, in the north of Thailand, for quite some time now.

ON The first Artsound Catazine saw the light of day around a year ago. This 'marriage' between a magazine and a simple product folder was a first direct bridge to our customers. And this formula proved to be a success. An amazing 40,000 copies were sent out, quite an achievement in today's digital age. We received words of congratulations from a variety of sources: retailers, technical professionals, managers, but mostly from you, our customers.

A look back in time If we take a glimpse back through history, we notice that mankind once began as a huntergatherer society. A sedentary society came later; gradually, we stopped being a society of wanderers, choosing instead to remain in one place, and thus tried our hand at surviving this way. Many centuries later, this led to the industrial revolution which ultimately evolved into the complete digitisation we see in society today. With a vast number of consequences as a result. Whereas just a few decades ago, we would meet other people via youth groups, student associations, and photography clubs, today these meeting places have become secondary in importance. Our communications with one another have become less ‘physical’. These days, we communicate with one another via blogs, Twitter, Facebook and smartphones, and at lightning speed. We live in a boundless world of information, and managing these activities hardly leaves any time for face-toface meetings. Rather ambiguous, isn’t it?

In spite of this, our personalities are still shaped primarily by what we learn and share in our personal local environment. After all, this is where our standards and values are formed. 'Belonging' has therefore become essential to the shaping of our identity; the failure to do so means we risk living in a state of loneliness[1]. Which is exactly one of the main plagues in today's society, isn’t it? So, in order to develop our identity and build on our future, we need time and a familiar environment. This is a tall order, considering today’s society is based primarily on the short term. These days, we speak in terms of targets, statements, quotes and assessments. ADHD and up-tempo are the norm, yet on the other hand, we feverishly search for refuge. This refuge is also often referred to as ‘home’. This is where we stop and catch our breath, take a break from the world raging outside, back to our homes and safe 'in' our familiar values. Perhaps this is the reason young people are less rebellious than they used to be? Mum and dad are no longer the undisputed authority, but just pleasant company. Loyal friends. [1] Substantiated theory from Paul Verhaeghe, Het einde van de psychotherapie (The End of Psychotherapy), 2009

2

It is not always easy for manufacturers to develop a proper relationship with customers against this background. Individuals are bombarded with countless influences from an equal number of sources. Where and when do you make choices, and most importantly, what should you choose? Research has shown that in such a situation, we are guided by our emotions, by familiarity and authenticity. Something either suits you or it doesn’t. This is the very reason that ArtSound has made the conscious choice for a return to our DNA. We are getting back to the essence, the building blocks, the foundation. To what’s important. DNA is by definition timeless, and for our products, this concept represents the foundation and our departure point. It demonstrates how we are authentic, and the message we are trying to send. At Artsound, we inject our DNA into all of our products. In other words, we swear by our simple, yet functional Basic loudspeakers. Accented with a perfectionist’s touch in the Gold Series. We add

a dash of stubbornness in the Line-up series. Full of innovation in the Genius line, and noticeably smart in our multi-room products. Our ArtSound DNA is interwoven throughout this second issue of Catazine. ArtSound does not aim to be ostentatious, we just want to exude individuality. We do this as a communal effort, thanks to the DNA of a group of people who make ArtSound what it is. This is why you won’t find a self-congratulatory portrait photo below, or an empty marketing slogan. ArtSound is a team. And we are here for you. Michaël Bingé Kristof Van Hoorebeke

DESIGN

THROUGH THE EYES OF DIRK WYNANTS / EXTREMIS

The importance Design is a multifaceted concept. For one person, it may be about innovation, while for someone else, it’s the ‘uniqueness’ that matters, and for yet another, it’s about improvement and surprise. Designer Dirk Wynants also has his own view of what design means in the year 2010. Thanks to this philosophy, in recent years his company Extremis has grown to become a trendsetting producer in the design industry under the motto “tools for togetherness”.

“The furniture that I design and develop has the baseline of soul and funk in it”

4

Designing furniture is in Dirk Wynants’ blood: his father mastered the craft. It is thus no great surprise that the young Wynants decided to study interior and furniture design. After working in various positions for several major designers, he started Extremis in 1994. Extremis develops contemporary outdoor furniture. “If you ask me what design means, I can’t sum it up in two words,” Wynants says. “For me, it's more than just the so-called pièces uniques. I strive for functionality, ergonomics, improvement and innovation. At Extremis, we also try to keep ecology and economic aspects in mind in everything we produce.”

Wynants is clear: in addition to form, his team also aims to offer content to customers, and this requires making compromises. “Sometimes we start out with a fantastic timeless design, but then for ecological reasons, we have to reconsider the aesthetics. This is not always easy, but if you succeed in doing it without making sacrifices to the final product, that's okay. I have been fortunate in that, thanks to my work experience, I have been schooled in more than designing alone: I can brainstorm along different tracks. As a result, the final products of Extremis are sometimes very divergent in terms of their form. They are the result of a great many thought processes. In other words, the final product is almost a coincidence. Before we get to that stage, we are constantly striving to achieve quality.” Tools for togetherness: this is the Extremis slogan. Big boss Wynants – this is how he jokingly refers to himself – likes variation in his designs, just like he does in his music: “I listen to just about everything, from jazz and funk played on heavy guitars to Gregorian chants and opera. As long as the baseline’s good, I like it. With Gregorian chants, it's the male vocals that have this effect, otherwise the genre just doesn't work.

Text Benedikte Van Eeghem

The furniture that I design and develop has the baseline of soul and funk in it. The pieces ensure that people feel good about themselves, and even gives them the urge to dance. Which of the pieces in our collection is my favourite? Actually, every piece, essentially. Because that variation, just like with music, intrigues me immensely.”

ESTABLISHED BRAND NAME

FORM VERSUS CONTENT

of the baseline

Whereas in the 1990s, consumers swore that the “only real stuff ” came from Italy, in 2010, design products from Belgium have an established image. Through passion and determination, Wynants and his team have managed to put Extremis on the design industry map as one of the many B-labels on the market. “I always give designers just starting out the following advice: keep your eyes open, watch, look and learn. I realise that there are plenty of people with overinflated egos in this industry who don’t like to stray from their point of view. However, you can learn a lot by allowing these egos to collide. It enriches you. Anyone just finishing school has a load of theoretical baggage to carry. You can only gain real experience once you’re in the business, by falling down and getting back up.”

PicNik, Donuts, Arthur, Gargantua… the list of Extremis creations is now quite long, just like the list of awards that the company has landed. After all these years, which creation is Dirk Wynants the most proud of ? “Difficult question. It’s like having to choose between your children: it’s just not possible. I usually say that I’m the most proud of the next item we are going to launch on the market.

DESIGN

THROUGH THE EYES OF JUAN JORION (JORI)

“A chair used to be nothing more than a place to sit down; now people want to also be able to work in them”

Uniqueness through simplicity At furniture manufacturer JORI, design is synonymous with a solid, sleek, stylish and, most of all, ergonomic construction. Under the motto “the art of fine seating”, JORI has made the production of sofas and chairs a matter of honour. Highquality armchairs with unique lines have been rolling off the assembly line since 1968. Founder and owner Juan Jorion has the following take on design: “Behind each chair is a unique, rational concept, drawn by hand, one that stands out in its simplicity. The combination of these elements gives a JORI chair a timeless character.”

However, for Jorion, timelessness in design does not mean that the company does not have an interest in contemporary trends. “Consumers’ lifestyles are constantly changing,” he emphasises. “At JORI, we take this into account, from the design stage to the realisation of a concept. A chair used to be nothing more than a place to sit down. These days, people also want to be able to work in them. Preferably in a cosy environment. With this thought in the back of our minds, we launched the multi-functional Chillap on the market: an armchair where people can work comfortably, surrounded by family, or in a hotel room or

lobby, or even in an airport lounge.” When we ask Jorion what effect design has on him personally, he is rather formal in his response: “A completed project at our company can put me in what I call ‘zero muscle-tone state’. This is the ultimate form of pleasure, one in which all your muscles are completely relaxed. You could compare it to listening to a piece of classical music by Mozart, or a timeless, modern composition: you enjoy it every time, just as intensely. You could even say that in this way, design allows us to forget about the world for just a brief moment.”

The new ArtSound 100V catalogue has arrived!

You can install loudspeakers over larger areas in a 100V environment, and then regulate them easily. In other words, thanks to a 100V installation, it’s possible to install a high number of speakers in different zones, over greater distances. Or do you work more with PA systems,

6

microphones….? Or combinations of these in smaller buildings? If so, a 100V system is just what the doctor ordered, and this catalogue was designed just for you. You can view it online, or request your own copy via ArtSound (available in Dutch, French and English).

Genius Design

The Genius series from ArtSound also ‘has a thing’ for design. These loudspeakers aim to be a feast for the ears as well as the eyes. In developing these speakers, ArtSound strived to create a timeless, sleek concept. To do this, several of our employees got together to brainstorm. The egos ‘collided’ here several times as well, but this ultimately led to a series of unique, functional loudspeakers. Just like their sound, their lines also stand out in their solidity, restraint, and uniqueness. AS150 AS250 AS401 AS-A800 AS5002

Pure Pure sound taste

People who never listen to music are as few and far between as people who don’t like chocolate. Logical. No matter how small and regardless of the type, dark, milk or white, a piece of chocolate can provide intense pleasure. The same applies to a great piece of music. It is, by definition, indulgence.

It’s impossible not to love it...

10

Photography sart68

Chocolate is more than just a delicacy to be consumed. In fact, it is actually a concentrated form of chemistry. Chocolate contains substances such as ß-phenylethylamine, theobromine, caffeine, serotonin, tryptophan, magnesium and anandamide. This last substance can even cause a sort of high. However, the concentration of anandamide is (fortunately) negligible in chocolate. You would have to eat nearly 25 kilogrammes of it to notice any real effect. And by that time, you’ll find you’re stuck with a true stomach and intestinal crisis, and there won’t be much left of the high to enjoy anyways. So why are people so mad about chocolate then? Because it tastes sweet and smells so incredibly good. And this is what makes it so hard to resist. People who desperately need their fix of chocolate to make it through the day are even known as ‘chocoholics’. "Enjoy in moderation” is the best motto here...

B.B. King is a living blues legend. A musician pur sang, and also one who loves pure sound and pure chocolate.

This is his favourite chocolate cake recipe.

And when it comes to chocolate and its unique properties, the last word has yet to be written on the subject. Memorise these little facts to impress your friends with at the next stag party. Or New Year’s Eve get-together whichever you fancy.

Choc facts... Eating a small piece of chocolate each day reduces your chance of cardiovascular disease by half. Chocolate is one of Belgium’s many prides and joys. The largest chocolate factory in the world is the Barry Callebaut facility in Wieze. The Swiss consume more chocolate than any other country in the world. They devour 11.4 kilogrammes of it per year. The Belgians come in third place on this list, with 8.7 kilogrammes per year. The first "bar" of chocolate rolled off the assembly line at Cadbury's in Great Britain in 1842. Chocolate is literally the food of the gods. The cocoa tree belongs to the Theobroma family. Theobroma is Greek for “gift from the gods”. Chocolate melts at approximately 35.5o C. In other words, in your mouth. During World War II, a convoy of soldiers on their way to the front mixed up a shipment of laxatives with one containing chocolate. The medication was produced in the form of “bars” which were brown in colour. Once on the train, the soldiers decided to feast on the cargo in their care. Perhaps it would be best not to discuss the consequences of this decision.

Cake

1 cup dark chocolate 1-1/4 cups butter 2 cups granulated sugar 4 eggs, separated 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups self-rising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup buttermilk

Frosting

1-1/2 cups condensed milk 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar 4 egg yolks, beaten slightly 3/4 cup butter 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups grated coconut 2 cups chopped pecans

Preparation (cake)

Melt the chocolate together with 1/4 cup of butter ‘au bain marie (double boiler)’ and let cool. Mix the rest of the butter and sugar in a bowl. Beat in the egg yolks. Add the vanilla extract and the melted chocolate to this mixture. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a separate bowl. Add this, together with the buttermilk, to the batter. Beat the egg whites stiff and carefully fold them into the batter. Pour the batter into a cake mould and bake for 30 to 40 minutes in a pre-heated oven at 180°.

Frosting the cake

Mix the condensed milk, sugar, egg yolks and butter in the pan and heat over a low flame. Add the vanilla extract. Continue to stir until the mix thickens and sticks to the spoon. Remove the pan from the flame and fold in the coconut and pecans. Let cool until the mixture thickens a bit, and pour it in a single layer over the cake. Spread any remaining frosting around the sides of the cake.

The Sonar cabinet is made from solid wood, and has a conical shape. This combination guarantees a warm, pure sound with excellent reproduction of details. Improved drivers are now used in the production process. When it comes to the mounting materials for these loudspeakers, only the best was good enough: pure rubber. Thanks to these high-quality and high-tech components, these loudspeakers produce vibrations that reproduce remarkably fast, far and pure. All of these qualities make the Sonar series somewhat atypical. In spite of their relatively small dimensions, the speakers are still able to produce an exceptionally clear and warm sound. Pure essence, packaged in a sleek design and manufactured using noble materials. A warm caress for the ear.

Play that Music eases the blues and delights the taste buds. Just ask chocolatier Ronald Landuyt from Knokke-Heist; he knows all about it. He has developed the perfect marriage between music and dark chocolate. The result is a chocolate record: perfectly playable and even edible.

tasty music! The story of Roland Landuyt and his chocolate records is a unique one. In the 1990s, he was a fervent supporter of the Cercle Brugge football team. At the time, he got the idea to press the club’s song onto a chocolate record. Although the one-off stunt garnered media attention for Landuyt, it did not make him world-renowned. He preferred to keep the invention private. At the time, the club song was pressed onto 180 records - or shall we say, ‘melted’. Although that was a long time ago, Landuyt’s passion for chocolate and making original creations never disappeared. After a lengthy illness a few years ago, he decided to breathe new life into the chocolate record. "I did it at the recommendation of the doctors,” he tells us. “They assured me that staying busy was the best way to conquer my illness. Since I am an optimist anyway, I decided to take their advice." Since then, Landuyt has converted songs by Elvis Presley and Paul Anka to chocolate disks. This appears to have been a good gamble, considering the Japanese emperor Akihito and Michael Dell, CEO of computer giant DELL are among his customers. The chocolatier proudly emphasises that his records are still unique in the world today. Landuyt remains discreet when asked how one makes chocolate records sound 'good'. Although the recipe is a secret, one thing we do know is that you have to use dark chocolate (at least 40% cacao) to achieve good results. During the production, it is also important for the cacao mass to be kept at the right temperature to achieve the desired level of hardness. With the right expertise, you can transform a delicious ingredient into a classic sound carrier. As the English might say: "Classics never die. They just get eaten."

A quick sniff

Chocolatier Dominique Persoone from Bruges is also a ‘choc-artist’, or as he refers to himself, a Shock-O-Latier. A few years ago, he introduced the Chocolate Shooter on the market: a small device used to snort chocolate powder combined with various aromas such as raspberry and ginger. This little gem happened to ‘land’ under the nostrils of none other than Ron Wood, the Rolling Stones’ guitarist. Mr Wood was sold on the spot. The Chocolate Shooter is also available via the retail trade: www.chocolateshooter.be

A perfect match

Every Jack must find his Jill.

This was an expression they used to use in ‘the olden days’. As chance would have it, this old saying also applies perfectly to people when they are choosing loudspeakers. Those looking for added value don’t ‘just choose’ a speaker, but instead look for one that will earn its place in their interior. For others, the perfect speaker is one that may be installed anywhere, thanks to a timeless design and good value-for-money. And this is precisely where the BASIC series’ strength lies.

A touch of culture In 2009, SMAK Ghent featured a retrospective of the work of video artist Dara Birnbaum. Just for this occasion, ArtSound supplied the sound for several of Birnbaum’s works. To do this, we used the AS30 loudspeaker from the BASIC series. The exhibition is still on its world tour.

14

A modest, efficient loudspeaker. Not too large and not too small. Fits in every environment, and produces just the right sound. Not only that, it's even affordable. It’s name? BASIC. This series from ArtSound is extremely popular among a broad audience that wants its music to sound audible. This may be music destined to be heard in the living room, but also applies equally to any other room. Because BASIC has a simple yet timeless design, the loudspeakers are perfectly suited to nearly any location.

guaranteed sound quality. If you lean more towards built-in models, then you’re sure to find something that strikes your fancy in the MDC401, the MDC501 or perhaps the MDC620. We not only strive to create the least expensive, but at the same time, the most complete sound formula. You will find all of the specific details on page 34 and on www.artsound.be

The taste of sound

These are the top 3 absolute bestsellers in the world we call BASIC

It is rather difficult to describe on paper how a speaker sounds. Warm sound. Far-reaching bass. But how warm and how far is this actually? In the BASIC series, this varies from one model to the next. The AS20 is ideal for producing pleasant background music in rooms up to approximately 20 m². The AS30 and AS40 can achieve the same goal in rooms up to 40 m², and the AS40 can easily produce enough sound to fill a large living room or even a meeting room. We might even be able to describe the AS50 as the “crème de la crème” of this series: every detail sounds just as refined and clear as the next, and it can fill a 50 m² room with the greatest of ease. BASIC is therefore a colourful collection featuring power and strong sound, perfectly suited to nearly any location: in the kitchen, toilet, or in the dining room of a brasserie.

Price versus quality

When it comes to quality, I’m usually willing to say a bit more. But who am I? We can’t get around the fact that a product that offers ‘quality at an affordable price’ is just that much more appealing than the ‘cheapest’ alternative. The BASIC also scores high in this regard. Onwall models such as the AS20 are available starting at a mere € 59, including the mounting bracket. There are models available in white, silver-grey and black, and with their simple design, they’re fairly inconspicuous. A perfect fit, and with

VALENCIA.

Restyle the AS30... You can do this by either collecting a used model from us, free of charge, or using one of your own models. Give free reign to your creativity! Paint the loudspeaker, change its shape, add multimedia or even scents to it: everything is allowed. The only condition is that this bestselling loudspeaker remains recognisable as a loudspeaker and can still function on its own. In other words, it may not form part of another project.

Working with a delegation from SMAK Ghent (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst), a panel of our own designers will choose a winner. The winning design must stand out in terms of creativity, daring and realism. We will also study whether or not we can use your design as a basis for a new ArtSound loudspeaker.

The loudspeaker fits easily in a variety of rooms thanks to its neutral design, and is available in different shapes, colours and sizes. The BASIC also comes complete with mounting materials and guarantees great sound.

The music of Angels

"Without music, life would be a serious mistake."

Music affects our emotions and can make us incredibly happy or sad. Musical notes can hit a sensitive nerve. Music might very well be the purest form of therapy.

T

he Engelenhoeve is a unique project designed to help those with a mental or physical handicap. The facility allows them to relax and enjoy themselves in a people- and animalfriendly environment. Information and an events calendar may be found on www.engelenhoeve.be.

You have undoubtedly experienced it at one time or another: you hear a simple tune on the radio that gives you a wonderful, carefree feeling. Or a catchy guitar solo that gives you goosepimples or even brings you to tears. Music can stir remarkably heavy and immediate emotions in a person. It is no wonder that more and more people are seeking solace in a variety of types of musical therapy. Music can act as an aid in coping with grief, fighting off stress, and helps us to put a variety of emotions into words, via melodies.

better,” Denis tells us. "This is precisely why I had been toying with the idea for some time to install loudspeakers throughout the facility that would all play the same vibrations. After all, we are huge New Age music lovers. By coincidence, ArtSound caught wind of my ambitious plans. They supplied us with the outdoor loudspeakers, and as of this summer, relaxing music can be heard throughout the Engelenhoeve property.”

Music can also work miracles with those with a mental or physical handicap. Denis Detavernier and Greetje Delanghe of the Engelenhoeve have unique experience in this area. They live in a refurbished farm that also serves as a special care facility. Since 2003, the Engelenhoeve’s doors have been open to children with all sorts of disabilities. Here, they can relax in a natural environment, go horseback riding, undergo multisensory therapy ("snoezelen"), in short: feel good about themselves. Music is at the heart of everything here. The Engelenhoeve has a fully equipped percussion room with djembés, congas and other percussion instruments. Visitors can come listen to stories in the ‘cuddle house’ while music plays in the background. "From the very start, we have noticed that music truly makes people feel

“Music as therapy… even when coping with grief " The positive reactions from those visiting the Engelenhoeve are unanimous. Denis: "We can offer them all of our relaxation options free of charge. This naturally has a lot of advantages. We want to continue investing in projects here in the future that involve music. We are working on a horsetram where passengers can undergo multisensory therapy while they listen to music. Until then, we can continue to immerse people in music, anywhere on the property." >>>

ArtSound is very enthusiastic about the Engelenhoeve success story. Managing partner Michaël Bingé visited the facility during the birthday party of a friend with a disabled daughter. "In this case, I really went with my gut feeling", Michaël emphasises. "I was so impressed with what Denis and Greetje do, and so unselfishly, that I felt that as a company, we had to do our part. There are different loudspeakers installed at the Engelenhoeve, including models from our E-line. The Rock was the perfect model for developing a sort of ‘track’ between the different indoor and outdoor areas at the farm. Thanks to this system, the children no longer have the feeling that the mood changes the minute they walk outside; the music serves as a constant guide, leading them to the next activity at a different location. We have installed all of the outdoor loudspeakers very discreetly so that they don't interfere with the view.”

Thanks to the "outsiders" from ArtSound, you can listen to music outdoors, in any type of weather. We have four models in this range, each with a specific design and sound.

The ASW45 3 is a brand new model. Thanks to the unique slant in the housing, it has a high capacity, in spite of its unusually small dimensions. The performance is equal to that of the ASW55 and ASW65, thanks to a special filter system. David plays Goliath.

The ASW551 and ASW652 are one another’s equal. They are available in black or white, and have a slightly curved profile. This enables them to guarantee excellent sound reproduction and a high range. The ASW55 and ASW65 are loudspeakers perfect for any garden or street party. They are also well-suited for playing music in covered, damp spaces such as a sauna, large cooled rooms, a bathroom or swimming pool.

The ASRock4 is a speaker in the shape of a rock. It is available in grey or brown. Its unique design allows you to install the loudspeaker discreetly in an outdoor environment. Its natural colour means that the Rock does not get noticed straight away in a garden or on a terrace surrounded by greenery. Important: Just like the other waterproof models, this speaker also has a bass reflex, allowing it to guarantee powerful sound reproduction and making it perfect for use in large spaces.

Waterproof? Whether or not a loudspeaker is considered waterproof depends on its IP score, or the International Protection Rating. This rating determines whether or not the loudspeaker is resistant to shock or moving objects, for example. The Rock has been given an IP 44 rating, which means that it is resistant to rain, cold temperatures and is splash-resistant.

How do you get around poor acoustics?

"A lot depends on the guy working the

buttons" Figure skater Kevin Van der Perren recently complained that he often can’t hear his own music during a performance. Granted, sports arenas are not exactly known for being acoustical gems. This made us wonder: how do sound technicians cope with the spaces they have to work in? And why does one concert sound better than another?

To answer these questions, we approached two top specialists in this field. Patrick Demoustier is the head sound designer at EML, and Erik Loots is a ‘freelance sound wizard’ who is in very high demand in Belgium and abroad. ‘A lot depends on the guy working the buttons,’ Loots confidently says. The high speed at which technology evolves these days is one thing, but when it comes to producing a good sound quality in vastly different acoustical environments, the most important factors are those related to the human element, in his opinion. ‘You need a good system engineer who knows the best way to install the speakers as a function of the space and the show. And then you need someone to man the mixing board who can apply his artistic and musical vision to the source on the stage. People who are able to combine both talents are rare - you can count them on one hand.’

20

ALWAYS A NEW Every day, sound techniCHALLENGE cians fight a battle against the

spaces they have to work in. ‘You simply cannot change them, you have to make do with what you have,’ according to Patrick Demoustier, who gives us a crash course in the physics of sound. ‘Sound is an omnidirectional source, and also one that travels very slowly through space. It becomes a problem when two sound sources don’t arrive at your ear at exactly the same time, for example as a result of major reflection. So the trick is for us is to find a way to prevent this from happening. This is hard to do with an omni-directional source. However, about ten years ago, we found out about a revolution thanks to the line-array systems, where speakers are grouped in horizontal or vertical clusters which you can place in a very specific way, making it a lot easier to focus sound in a certain zone. Mind you, this is not a magical solution. You often also need extra delay

speakers in order to ensure that the sound also reaches the balconies in the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, for example.’ The question of which types of venues have the most difficult acoustic environment is not an easy one to answer. ‘Each environment is different and offers new challenges,’ Erik Loots says. ‘The sound in classical concert halls for example, is hard to amplify. The Blauwe Zaal auditorium in de Singel, for example, is a beautiful venue for classical orchestras, but if you hang speakers up in there, you destroy the natural acoustics. Auditoriums with a lot of reflective surfaces, such as the AB Club, with wood floors, walls and ceilings, are not any easier to work with.’ Just like Erik Loots, Patrick Demoustier is not a huge fan of typical plastic blue and white ‘festival’ tents. ‘They’re too small, and have hard, reflective walls. The budgets available often prohibit being able to work with delays, and the speakers are usually mounted

too low. Additionally, there is a large development of heat above the crowd, which easily gives the sound a “compressed” feeling.’ The only solution is to increase the volume to a level that goes beyond the acoustic thresholds, but this is not very comfortable for the audience.

Unlike many foreign groups, acts like Clouseau and Night of the Proms in the Sportpaleis will invest in this, and you can really hear the difference.

HAVING ENOUGH OF When it comes to THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT this, our special-

ists prefer the larger indoor venues as well as open-air events. ‘When you work outdoors, you don’t have acoustics to cope with,’ according to Demoustier. ‘It’s just you and your PA system, and the quality of that system. EML, for example, uses a really good PA for the Rock Werchter festival. To express it in figures: for each side, we allow 3 times 400 amps for the sound, and this is enormous. Erik Loots: ‘It’s true, we don’t have to worry about reflection. There’s nothing that counteracts your direct sound, but you do have to deal with another challenge: as a sound mixer, you have to find a way to build space into your sound artificially, for example by creating a good balance between all of the different sources on your mixing table, adding artificial resonance, and working with delays and effects.’ Unlike what most concertgoers think, large

halls such as the Sportpaleis and Vorst Nationaal are fairly comfortable to work in. ‘You can’t really use the poor acoustics in a building as an excuse,’ Demoustier says. ‘You can control this as long as you use enough resources and have a proper PA system. And you have to be good at improvising, which is definitely the case if you can’t get in and have a look round the hall until the morning of the performance. And technology is definitely a huge help: digital mixing tables for example often have a virtual sound-check program on board. You can play a multi-track recording from a previous concert on your laptop without the need for any musicians. You can allow the bass to drone on as long as you want, and then fine-tune everything. And then you have measuring programs, which you can use to adjust the delay speakers down to the millisecond thanks to measuring microphones placed in the hall.’ 21

DIGITAL REVOLUTION So why is it that so many (even internation-

al) acts often sound bad, or at any rate, not optimal? ‘As I mentioned, the short time we often have between our arrival at the venue and the performance plays a role,’ according to Erik Loots. ‘Also the fact that many tours work with a regular, standard set of equipment which they can’t adapt to each individual auditorium, for logistical and budgetary reasons, also has an impact.’ ‘American bands in particular are very rigid about this,’ Patrick Demoustier adds. ‘Even the placement of just a few extra delay speakers can make a big difference, but that’s expensive. You have to run more cables and make sure you have extra rigs. Acts like Clouseau and Night of the Proms in the Sportpaleis will invest in this, and you can really hear the difference.

What is

what? Line-array system A line array consists of several loudspeakers which are stacked (preferably) vertically on top of one another. A horizontal line array – the ‘banana’ – can put too much emphasis on some frequencies.

Rigs

"The poor acoustics in a building may not be used as an excuse for poor sound quality." Patrick Demoustier, EML

It should now be obvious that a good sound mixer has to be able to rely heavily on his strong professional expertise. Be that as it may, how do they view the evolution in technology? Has this made their work easier, or in fact, more difficult? ‘The digital tables which you can use to call up scenes and other pre-sets quickly definitely help,’ Erik Loots believes. ‘On a single table, you can shift quickly from one production to the next.’ Patrick Demoustier agrees with him on that score: ‘The introduction of computer technology in sound was a slow process initially, and certainly was not a smooth one, but these days, it has snowballed to the point that it is now unstoppable. Although, when it comes to speakers and amplifiers, I think we have reached the limit.’ ‘However, because the technology has progressed so far and so quickly, you have to apply a lot more accuracy in working with it, and besides, musicians and directors also expect a lot more from us now. In other words, it hasn’t gotten easier,’ Erik Loots concludes.

Elsewhere in this issue of catazine you can read how, in their efforts to create beautiful sound, sound engineers and technicians are nearly always ‘thwarted’ by the specific acoustics in a concert hall or tent. But did you also know that there is something known as a ‘dead room’ or anechoic chamber? Thanks to walls, floors and ceilings which absorb the maximum amount of sound (for example, by using materials in the shape of 'points', filled with foam rubber or rock wool), not a single sound echoes. These rooms are also fully insulated from their environment. An anechoic chamber is usually used for enabling extremely precise acoustic measurements, for example to determine the frequency proper-

22

Steel beams from which speakers, lighting and/or video equipment may be hung.

Delay speakers A line array is used for large surface areas, such as concerts. Several speakers are stacked vertically on top of one another, allowing the sound pressure to be aimed right at the audience. This enables the system to cover longer distances, and disruptive reflections are kept to a minimum. Multiple line arrays involve a complex sound processing that controls the sound and any delays so that the sound is equal in quality everywhere, and echoes remain at a minimum.

NO SOUND ALLOWED ties of loudspeakers and microphones. Incidentally, a brief stay in one of these ‘dead rooms’ is a unique experience. It feels like being outside, but without the sounds of cars, birds or the rustling of trees. You even start to notice the sound of the blood being pumped through your ears. One of the quietest rooms in the world is located just mere metres under the Centre Pompidou museum in Paris, and many a visitor has run out of there after only a few minutes because they were unable to tolerate the silence. You have undoubtedly experienced it at one time or another: an invitation from co-workers or friends to have lunch at the stylish brasserie around the corner. Good service, great food, yet in spite of all this, that ‘little extra’ was missing. Perfect apart from the fact that the music in the restaurant was either barely audible or much too loud. It may seem trivial, but even a small detail like this can change a fun get-together into a less successful gathering. The Line-Up series with the G-line and the E-line is the answer. The G-line is a functional model in this series, built to last and with a timeless design. This loudspeaker is unusually powerful, yet at the same time, discreet and produces a warm sound. It comes with a bracket that allows you to mount the speaker to the wall or ceiling, or even use it as a handy base.

The sound of ...

There are very few artists on the planet who are the objects of attention as often as the band U2. Whether they are releasing a new record, supporting a worthy cause, or celebrating the 50th birthday of their frontman, U2 is everywhere these days. The Irish foursome's sound and shows continue to beguile the public, and the release of their most recent record, No Line on the Horizon is no exception. WHY IS THAT?

25

In late 2008, nearly two years ago, U2 released their 12th studio album, No Line on the Horizon. According to those in the know and music critics, this record is one of their strongest works to date. A remarkable verdict, considering predecessors

on Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree. Eno and Lanois accompanied U2 to Fez, Morocco for recording sessions, and have clearly left their mark on the sound of the band’s latest album. According to lead guitarist the Edge, the partnership was fairly coincidental. “Bono was invited to attend a religious music festival in

three of the tracks on No Line on the Horizon were ‘born’ in Fez. “It all happened so fast”, he recalls. “We started out with a really basic idea, a chord or a simple guitar riff. By sitting down together with Brian and Daniel, complete numbers evolved such as Unknown Caller and the very intimate Moments of Surrender.”

Fez in 2008 where he had previously been invited as a guest. He asked us if we were interested in coming along, to perhaps get some inspiration. We agreed. Larry and Adam were also enthusiastic about the idea immediately. Not that we really had a ‘goal’ when we left for Fez, mostly we just wanted to drink in the atmosphere. That relaxed approach ended up producing some pretty great musical results.” According to the Edge, at least

According to bass player Adam Clayton, U2’s strength lies predominantly in the fact that the band listens to other music quite often. “There are two types of melodies for us: U2’s, and all the others. Between recording sessions, we mainly listen to music that we’re really interested in. And this definitely does not include U2. We share the same taste in music, even though we allow ourselves to be influenced more by other bands and artists than we used

“I have the feeling that my autobiography has been written now” Bono such as Achtung Baby (1991) and The Unforgettable Fire (1984) have been claiming their place in music history for many years now. Time and time again, the band’s concerts have been viewed as technical and musical masterpieces. Record sales reach new heights with every new album release. So what is it about U2’s sound that continues to appeal to audiences young and old after nearly three decades? Talent, but also drive and a carefully selected entourage. No Line on the Horizon was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, who had also worked

26

to. Since we always agree on music, our sound comes into its own better. We can continuously draw from the same frame of reference.” Clayton emphasises that it is this frame of reference that has also given the most recent U2 record an added value. “We kept hammering away at the sound until just before the release. This way, we could keep reviewing the original track list on a regular basis. We rearranged songs which were initially not supposed to be on the record and ultimately ended up adding them to the album anyway. At the end of the production period, Bono re-recorded the vocals on a couple of songs, and some of the lyrics were rewritten here and there. This meant that we could ultimately release an album that we were 100% satisfied with.” Those in the know are aware that Bono’s personal experiences have had a very strong influence on U2’s music. Critics sometimes accuse the band’s frontman of being more of a poser and do-gooder than he is a singer. Classic hits such as Sunday Bloody Sunday (protest song about the violence in Northern Ireland), Miss Sarajevo (an indictment of the civil war in the former Yugoslavia) or Pride (an ode to Martin Luther King). Although politics and music are tightly interwoven for Bono, the personal accent has shifted slightly on No Line on the Horizon. He views the world through the eyes of others, such as a drug addict on the subway in New York, or a war correspondent in Lebanon. “I literally wanted to start with a clean slate,” Bono explains. “I had the feeling that my autobiography has been written now (laughs). After a while, people have had enough. Oscar Wilde once said: ‘The mask reveals the man.’ By wearing a mask, by posing, you betray yourself. Eventually, you become one giant lump of personal emotion that you can no longer get away from. I went about it a bit differently this time.” And still... on the album’s track Stand-up Comedy, Bono sings: “Stand up to rock stars, Napoleon is in high heels/Josephine, be careful of small men with big ideas.” Small men with big ideas? “This is not sung in the third person,” the singer readily admits. “It really is about me...”

A casual two years after the release of No Line on the Horizon, U2 has just completed a spectacular 360° live concert tour. Due to health problems (Bono underwent back surgery this past spring), the second leg of the tour in the U.S. was postponed

until I’m seventy or something. But for now, we still really love making music. People keep coming back to see us live and keep listening to our music. So why in heaven’s name should we give that up?”

"Since we always agree on music, our sound comes into its own better." for a while, but in spite of this, nothing really seems to bring the group down. U2 has been playing together since 1976, and if it were up to drummer Larry Mullen Jr., this will remain so for quite some time yet. “Not that I will keep doing this

the bathroom? And your son prefers to listen to U2’s Bono in the privacy of his bedroom? This scenario can only work if you link multiple sound sources to your audio distribution system provided the system is capable of switching between all these different sources. The number of zones that your system should be able to control is dependent on the number of rooms in which you want to play music. It is thus better to calculate a bit on the ‘roomy’ side rather than to risk coming up too short. The multi-source capacity, or the maximum number of different sound sources the system can handle, is usually proportional to the number of family members.

A complete audio distribution system always contains a number of sound sources which may also be connected externally. This is however, not a requirement. What you definitely do need is a central switching unit. This ensures that each sound source is guided through to the right zone. In many cases, a central unit like this also transmits control commands to the various sound sources. These commands are then received via control panels and/ or wireless remote controls in the different zones. In addition, there is usually a multizone amplifier built into the central unit, which produces the wattage necessary to control the loudspeakers in the various zones. If a multi-zone amplifier is not integrated into the central control unit, you can always purchase one of these amplifiers separately. Finally, you must also install a few loudspeakers in each individual zone. Built-in models are usually used for this purpose, but mounted speakers can handle the job just as well. Add another control panel and/or a form of wireless remote control, and the system is ready to use.

MULTI-ROOM

AUDIO DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

Some people call it an audio distribution system, others prefer ‘multi-room installation'. Regardless of the name, the formula is the same. An audio distribution system makes it possible to play music throughout your home, and even outside of it. Would you like to listen to Bach in the attic, and have Robbie Williams playing in the garage at the same time? Or An audio distribution system is usually would you prefer to referred to using the term ‘multi-room’. hear your favourite This means that one central sound summer hit throughsystem can play music simultaneously in several rooms, or ‘zones’. FROM SMALL TO LARGE

Just suppose you have a sound source in your living room, but would also like to enjoy your CD collection while you have breakfast. And on sunny days, your wife or girlfriend would also like to enjoy the same music while she sunbathes out on the patio. Different sound sources are not a must for you, but you would actually like to be able to individually control the zones where the music is playing. How do you do this? The ArtSound SVC4 is perhaps the simplest solution. It is the most elementary multi-room system ever made. All you need to do is connect the device to the loudspeaker output on an existing amplifier, and the SVC4 splits the signal four ways. This allows you to hook up four pairs of loudspeakers and place them in different zones. From then on, the same music will play everywhere. The SVC6 does exactly the same thing, but with six pairs of loudspeakers instead of four. With average sound systems, you can’t just hook up several pairs of loudspeakers to a single loudspeaker output. If you did, the amplifier would give up the ghost in no time at all. However, the SVC4 and SVC6 have the right electronics on board to prevent this problem from occurring.

A different scenario. You have just built or renovated your home. The bathroom is getting a modern update and everything will be refitted in a sunny or spring-fresh colour. This is the ideal time to install a facility for being able to play music via built-in speakers in the bathroom, for example. You can now finally drop off that old portable radio at the nearest recycled goods shop.

Enter the ART2.1. This is an extremely compact cabinet, 12 x 6.5 x 4 cm to be exact, whose petite dimensions make it easy to ‘hide’ it in a false ceiling or in a small cupboard. This little beauty contains a complete FM tuner and a Class D 1 zone stereo amplifier. It comes complete with an RF remote control, so you don’t need the aim of a sniper to control the system. After all, this is the downside of classic infrared remote control devices. All you have to do is to hook up a pair of loudspeakers (built-in) and it’s ready to go. Another nice feature of the ART2.1 is that the input is suitable for an external audio source, so that you can connect a CD player or i-Pod to your system.

PLUG IT AND PLAY IT.

No heavy equipment or special tools are needed. The system is based on the wireless plug-and-play principle.

Interested in dividing your home up into several zones? This is the ideal way to get rid of several individual sound carriers, whether or not these are connected to one another. A simple, affordable and integrated solution is a must in this type of situation. It must also be easy to install and user-friendly.

The name? ART2.4. The Art 2.4 combines a 4-zone audio distribution system with a powerful 2 x 25 watt amplifier component for each zone. You can listen to the built-in FM tuner, or use the stereocinch input, allowing you to hook up a sound source of your choice. Complete with an RF remote control, the system is incredibly easy to operate. If you would like to use several remote control devices, this may be set up for each individual zone. On the other hand, you could also equip the system with wall transmitters. These are small control panels that you mount to the wall and which then do their job wirelessly. No heavy equipment or special tools are needed since the system is based on the wireless plug-and-play principle. You assign a function to a specific button once, and it remains permanently programmed. Â

HIGH TECH WITH A DESIGN LOOK

Karl and Kathy’s brand new home is a jewel of modern construction. In addition to lighting and underfloor heating, they also want to integrate music into the various rooms of their villa. They also want to make sure their teenagers can keep pace with the latest technological developments: playing music from playlists, using zones, listening to Internet radio, you name it. These parents want to create a cosy atmosphere in their home when guests come to visit, but they also want to be able to really cut loose on a sultry summer evening. Now and then, they’ll want to watch a movie, and the sound still has to be perfect. Karl and Kathy are willing to free up an acceptable budget for this kind of system.

AS450

In this case, the most sophisticated audio distribution systems from ArtSound are the ART5.4 and the ART8.8. The ART5.4 is a 4-zone device complete with a 2 x 20 watt Class D amplifier component for each zone. What really makes this unit unique is the several different sound sources it allows you to have at your disposal. To start with, the device has two FM transmitters under the hood. This means for example that you can listen to your favourite news radio station in one zone, while classical masterpieces resound from another room. The system also has two audio inputs so you can connect any audio source you like. A CD player or i-Pod are only two of the many possibilities. You can also play digital sound stored on a USB device, an SD memory card or via shared media. You can operate the ART5.4 remarkably quickly thanks to the remote control supplied. Zapping to the next track is a piece of cake thanks to the new 2.4 GHz Zigbee principle. You don’t have to aim, and the signal is always received flawlessly. The system also allows two-way communication. You can also read all sorts of information on the display of the remote control, such as the names of radio stations, RDS information, track names for mp3 files, and so on. There is also the option of installing small wireless wall panels if you prefer. There are also two RS-232 serial interfaces which allow the system to be connected to a domotics system. The ART5.4 described above satisfies nearly every conceivable expectation, unless you would like to be able to control even more zones and/or audio sources. In that case, it’s time to give the ART8.8 a turn to stand in the spotlights. This deluxe device can handle eight different sound sources and control eight zones with the greatest of ease.

ART2.1: play ambient music in any space with the invisible amplifier/tuner!

X

Transform a room or space into an audio zone with the flip of a switch. With the right tools, a steady hand and a healthy dose of enthusiasm, you can do the job in no time. You can use the six-step plan below as a manual. Good luck! 1. Remove the amplifier (ART21) and the manual from the box. Check to see if you can install the ART21 in a false ceiling via the hole for the loudspeaker. Leave a 10-cm margin of space around the device in the ceiling (or cabinet). 2. Using the speaker cable, connect the loudspeakers (2) to the speaker output jack on the ART21. Determine the positive and negative ends of the cable, and make sure that it is connected correctly. 3. Plug in the ART21 using the electrical cord with standard plug. 4. If you only connect one loudspeaker, switch on the system in ‘mono’ using the appropriate button. 5. Connect any external sources using a standard RGA cable. Make sure you match up the red and black cables. 6. Operate the device using the RF remote control as follows: - push and hold the set-up button for at least 5 seconds until the RF LED indicator flashes; - push OFF. The LED will flash quickly. This means that the remote control has been read in; - push and hold the set-up button again for 5 seconds to exit the installation mode; - set the pre-set frequencies by pressing and holding the number key you would like to assign to the desired frequency for 2 seconds; - adjust treble and bass by pressing the button for a long or short period of time, followed by + or -. Happy listening!

There is an unwritten law that hi-fi lovers everywhere will happily endorse: loudspeakers must be first and foremost inconspicuous. They should enhance the fullest qualities of the music, without distortion and without the loudspeaker itself being in the limelight. A loudspeaker with a strong, bold sound can sometimes mislead you: first, they may give you that ‘wow’ feeling. But after a while, once your ears have tired of this, you start to crave steady and relaxed listening pleasure. 34

Photography www.m-idea.be

In choosing a built-in or other loudspeaker, it is wise to base your choice on four criteria: • the type of housing • the loudspeaker components or so-called "woofers and tweeters" • the way the components are mounted • the cross-over filter

Which one?

PAINT YOUR TUNES!

The housing or loudspeaker cabinet must be as sturdy as possible so as to avoid undesirable vibrations. With onwall speakers, the cabinet (in a false ceiling, for example) is a deciding factor. With built-in speakers, this is the basket or metal mounting materials. You can’t always choose the structure of a cabinet, but with the basket or mounting materials for a built-in speaker, you do have a choice. The diameter and choice of materials are crucial when it comes to loudspeaker components: there are dozens of models available in aluminium, titanium, polycarbonate and similar materials. The size and power of the underlying magnet also plays a role here. Since loudspeaker components must be able to move forward and backward at a certain speed, they need relatively flexible mounting materials. The trick is to supply them with a mounting system that is not too stiff and not too loose, in harmony with the woofer. Finally, the cross-over filter must be able to split the incoming sound signals so that they can be sent to the woofer (mid-range and low frequencies) and tweeter (high frequencies), without any distortion occurring in the process. No matter how you look at it, built-in loudspeakers must delight your ears without your eyes noticing. After all, you choose a built-in loudspeaker so that you can integrate it into your interior as discreetly as possible. The only part that remains visible is the front. You can easily paint over the front (grills and frames) of these speakers so that they ‘become one’ with the wall or the ceiling. This certainly applies to the Basic (with the exception of the MD30 and MD50 models), X-tended and Gold series from ArtSound.

basic Perhaps you are looking for a loudspeaker that is waterproof, budget-friendly, or just one that is state-of-the-art? If so, ArtSound is at your beck and call. Although you either barely notice our built-in loudspeakers (if you see them at all), you can definitely hear them. Basic is a straightforward loudspeaker, perfect for anyone looking for reliability and quality

at an acceptable price. The Basic inwall series contains no unnecessary extras or remarkable technical features. After all, the name says it all: this loudspeaker stands for the essence, the foundation. With this speaker, you can be sure you’re getting a budget-friendly, powerful speaker equipped with a two-way system and guaranteed sound quality. And most of the models may even be painted over, so you can integrate them perfectly in the room.

The Waterproof series from ArtSound responds to the needs of the environment while blending in with it at the same time. These loudspeakers were developed specifically for damp spaces (such as swimming pools) and outdoor environments. Each component is damp-resistant, and will continue to function in both high and low temperatures. Waterproof loudspeakers have a larger distribution differential that ensures that the music will carry farther, while still retaining its

full sound. This series includes two round built-in loudspeakers and one square model.

X-tended

Gold Series

What makes the X-tended series such a maverick? In designing this model, ArtSound has chosen a special woofer, swivel tweeters and a special filter. This gives the speakers a sound that is clearer than most other models, without sacrificing warmth. These speakers are also waterproof and thus ideal for integrating in a cool space or in a bathroom. The X-tended series consists of four different built-in loudspeakers. The most compact models are the SQ525 and the RO525. In terms of sound, they are identical twins: they both have a two-way coaxial system. In other words, the tweeter is positioned exactly at the centre of the woofer, creating a nearly perfect, tapered sound source. The frequency range of these loudspeakers varies from 65 Hz to 20 kHz, producing a remarkably deep sound.

Looking for the very best sound quality? If so, the loudspeakers in the Gold Series are the crème de la crème. This series sets itself apart through the choice of materials used in the loudspeaker components, the quality of the cross-over filter, and the mounting. In other words, three of the four key criteria. A Gold Series loudspeaker has a titanium dome tweeter which is driven by a powerful neodymium magnet. The woofer is made from anodized aluminium. After all, the name ‘Gold’ was a conscious choice: this loudspeaker incorporates gold connection clamps to ensure optimum conductivity. The basic models in the Gold Series are round, with a two-way coaxial design. The MDC700 is the smaller of the models, with a 21.5-cm diameter. The MDC800 has a 24-cm diameter, leaving room for a 6.5” woofer. This allows the low range of the MDC800 to run to 60 Hz. Technically speaking, the DC700 and DC800 are carbon copies of the MDC700 and MDC800, only square instead of round. The DC1000 and the DC2050 are the ultimate speakers in the line. The DC1000 is a rectangular, 2-way built-in loudspeaker which accommodates a 6.5” woofer and a 1” titanium dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. The low range runs to an amazing 50 Hz. The DC2050 is also a rectangular speaker, yet is specifically designed for use as a centre speaker. This speaker is thus best built in on its side, or horizontally. The tweeter in this model is the same as the one used in the DC1000, yet is equipped with two 5.25” anodized titanium woofers for the low/mid-range tones.

The RE650 goes one step further. It has a rectangular cabinet measuring 19 by 28 cm. The slightly larger volume of this cabinet results in a low range that runs to 60 Hz instead of 65 Hz. The tweeter may also be rotated in these loudspeakers. The RO650 is a somewhat larger, round model, with a 22.5-cm diameter. It also uses a rotating tweeter, yet combines this with a larger 6.5” aluminium woofer for a more powerful reproduction of low range.

The swivel tweeter is a unique extra feature: it allows you to guide the loudspeaker’s radiation pattern. For example, if the speakers are integrated high in the wall, the tweeter may be pointed downwards, literally guiding the sound directly to your ears.

The Gold Series is equipped with a swivel aluminium tweeter (1), treblebass control (2), a titanium woofer (3), a bass-reflex system (4) and gold terminals (5).

Built-in loudspeakers are usually placed in the ceiling or in the wall. The major advantage of this is that this makes them a discreet source of sound; you can barely see them (if you can see them at all). The process of installing these speakers is more than feasible for the run-of-the-mill DIY enthusiast. Still not sure how to get started or would you prefer to see an explanation of the procedure? If so, keep our 2009 catazine handy, and consult the toolbox. You can also download a PDF version of the document via www.artsound.be

FAQ for choosing the right built-in loudspeaker Which shape should I chose when choosing built-in speakers? Round, square, rectangular? Base your decision on the layout of the room, not the shape of the spotlights, for example. What should I expect from my built-in speaker, background music or tunes that really jump out at you? Do you want to use the speaker purely to create a mood, or to ‘just’ to listen to music and news at home? Or do you really want to enjoy every little detail while you relax in your easy chair with a cup of coffee? Is it the size of the speaker that’s important, or the quantity? Take both into account. It all depends on the size of the room and the construction materials used (glass, concrete, wood, tiles…). Usually, a larger number of loudspeakers will allow you to fill the room harmoniously with music. The tones will have the same sound quality everywhere. If you make a conscious choice for fewer speakers, they should be a bit larger in order to achieve the same effect. What if I want to install my speakers in a damp space? If the speaker is destined for outdoor use, poolside Photography www.stevencrabbe.be

or in a sauna, then you should definitely choose the Waterproof version. For a bathroom, you are better off choosing one of the X-tended models. What is the inwall depth that I need to install my speaker? Most loudspeakers require 7.5 cm of space. The more space you keep free, the better, on the condition that you do not leave too much space behind this. Does the size of the space in which the speakers will be installed matter? Yes. Based on this information, you can choose the type and quantity of loudspeakers you need. Consult the ArtSound table in this issue of catazine. I would like to install the speaker in a false ceiling. Are there any extra measures I need to take? Actually, you don’t. The false ceiling acts as a cabinet the way the housing on a normal onwall speaker does. The builtin model will sound a bit warmer as a result. If you plan to build your speaker into a wall, the best way to do this is to use a kit or damping materials. What kind of budget should I allocate (for each pair)? The most expensive purchase is not always a guarantee for the best sound. E-mail us for advice on info@artsound.be

Radio @ work

"Show me your radio, and I`ll tell you who you are." This could have been a quote from a world famous philosopher, but actually, we pulled this slogan out of our sleeve ourselves, just for this occasion. After all, a radio is more than just a device for listening to. Today, a radio can say everything about who you are, what you listen

to, and why. In the 1950s, families gathered around en masse together to listen to that one lamp radio which was in the living room or ‘forecourt’. This was the time of the collective radio moments. These days, every radio is a calling card. An individual example of technology, tailored to the listener. You can listen to music or other information where and when you want. With five sophisticated models, ArtSound is at the beck and call of true radio freaks.

R5 is synonymous with ‘my radio’. Light as a feather, this compact device is a sheer delight you can take with you wherever you go. And with pride, since the R5 is particularly attractive. Thanks to the illuminated tuning knob, you can tune in to any radio station easily. If you’re looking to add a personal touch, you can even plug your MP3 player into this portable, rechargeable radio. Customised playlists in a trendy, funky device with a rechargeable battery. What more could you want?

www.ilistentowhatireallywanttohear.com This is the philosophy behind the Ri50. This device allows you to receive 10,000 radio stations from all over the world, problem-free. The design? Sleek. The colour? Black. The Ri50 also has WiFi, a memory for programming five radio stations and a wake-up function. The unit even comes with a remote control, allowing you to bring the entire world of radio right to you while you relax in your easy chair. RRP: € 149

When they see the U1, most people get spontaneous images in their mind of those radios one sees setting the right tone at construction sites and other ‘rough’ settings. However, this sturdy, black-and-yellow beast has even more to offer. Not only is it resistant to moisture, it comes complete with a microphone input, battery compartment, iPod connection, 12-volt connection, LED lighting and an output for headphones. So no worries, you can easily plop this radio down in your garden or by the pool, endlessly enjoying great music. With a flip of the switch, home renovations, chores in your garage or sultry summer nights become times of intense enjoyment.

At ArtSound, we’re not afraid of a bit of tradition, as long as it’s combined with a dash of contemporary flair. This sums up what the WR1 stands for: a hip AM/FM radio tailored to the 21st century. Don’t be fooled by the radio’s retro look: it allows for extreme fine-tuning without any annoying crackling sounds. This radio even has dynamic bass compensation, producing richer bass sounds and a fuller and warmer overall sound. You can even connect a CD player or MP3 player to it. The newest member in our radio family is the R11. It easily beats out all the competitors still to be born with its simplicity and advanced performance. This tabletop radio only needs three buttons to adjust the volume, select AM or FM band, and tune in to the right station. The LED indicator lets you know at a glance if the reception is optimum. The R11 also has a stereo headphone connection and an aux-in jack so you can play your favourite MP3 tunes. And if you want to record with this tabletop radio, this too is possible, thanks to the Rec-out jack. This newcomer is available in black, white and red, with a matching metal loudspeaker grille. The wooden glossy finish makes it practically irresistible.

drop-in kits Practical drop-in kits have been developed for the X-Tended, Gold Series and Basic inwall loudspeakers.

• For the round models this consists of a special acoustic PVC pot which fully seals the rear of the loudspeaker. • For the square models, we have developed a customized square-shaped rear from MDF. • For several models we have a special kit which enables the loudspeaker to be fitted in the

wall. Thanks to the kit, you can fix the loudspeaker firmly in the wall and your adhesive will be flush with the front (frame) of the inwall speaker. The MOKIT RE220/300 is even supplied with an additional PVC inwall receptacle for extra loudspeaker protection.

SVC6 & SVC4 You can connect the SVC6 to six pairs of loudspeakers to one amplifier output. The device ensures that your amplifier will not be subjected to excessive load as a result. The practical dials on the front panel allow you to adjust the volume for each pair of loudspeakers separately. This makes it possible to create up to six different volume zones. The styling and finishing allows the SVC6 to blend in perfectly with your hi-fi installation. The SVC4 offers the same options as the SVC6, yet is limited to four pairs of loudspeakers.

AMP1250 The AMP1250 is a multichannel amplifier allowing you to control 12 (mono) or 6 (stereo) loudspeakers (zones). Every stereo loudspeaker zone is allocated the generous power capacity of 2 x 50 watt. It is also possible to use the amplifier in a bridged configuration which allows you to draw on 6 x 100 watt of power. The AMP1250 is perfectly capable of serving as a central power unit for an existing multi-room sound system, but may also be used as a stand-alone. This allows you to listen to one designated tuner, CD, mp3 player, etc. in different rooms and using local volume controls (see page 56) you can adjust the sound as you like. What’s also nice to know is that the the management circuit will automatically turn on or off the amplifier levels when a signal comes in. And of course, the unit is very well-protected.

ART2.1

Never before was it so easy to provide music in an extra room. The extremely compact and thus discreet housing of the ART2.1 contains a stereo amplifier, an FM tuner with four presets and the option of connecting it to an external sound source. Thanks to its minimal dimensions, you can easily hide the device in a false ceiling, for example, via the hole for the inwall loudspeakers. The advantage of the RF remote control included is that you don't have to stay within the ART2.1's 'line of sight'. This allows you to easily choose your favourite music and control the volume, wherever you happen to be.
