“Yo no pinté mis sueños, pinté mi realidad, porque era lo único que tenía o porque era lo único que conocía.” (Frida Kahlo)
Greta Araujo is a young, Mexican painter. She comes from a family of artists and her main focus is to spread her message beyond the Mexican boundaries. For Greta, art is not a way to earn a living, but it almost represents a parallel universe that can create new stories and new worlds. Paining has been her first language, even before she could speak, and now it has become almost a necessary habit, like breathing, something she can’t and don’t want to spot doing. She studied and worked for big Mexican institutions and travelled a lot and visited different countries where she could take inspiration from like Colombia, USA and Italy. However this was possible only at an adult age when she was economically independent: for reasons of money in fact she is a self-taught artist and very proud of this. Her style can be defined surrealist, almost expressionist. One main point is the capability to capture and shape the most different emotions of the human being like pain, sadness, depression, love and courage and to materialize them in a sort of painting language.
She started to paint artworks focused on social criticism, like the situation of poor children in the streets of big cities or the question of the limitless expansion of the cities, a critical issue for Mexico. Then she shifted to more intimate themes and artworks, but where she still continued to paint social related subjects like the situation of natives, the relation with the government or the weak situation of the scholar system. The last artworks of Greta Araujo invite to a more mystic, esoteric, intimate, timeless, tragic and intriguing world. The references to Mexico are always present, even if not easily recognizable to a quick look. The main protagonists are hearts, moons, love encounters and all the emotions of this world that the viewer recognise in a different way, according to his own inclinations. The main idea is an art that shapes differently according to the kind of person who faces the painting. What is really important is that the artwork causes different emotions through forms and colours. It’s not a mere esthetical question but a real way of communication. There is a balanced presence of animals, ethnicities, ideologies but also different techniques and colours. Everything is always connected to her homeland: Mexico.
The two main points Greta’s art has to cover are the Mexican nature and women: these are the main protagonists. However the main focus is to amaze and astonish the viewer with artworks that express the culture and the greatness of her country. In her paintings Greta is able to create deep and new universes where it’s possible to merge completely. She isn’t afraid to break the schemes and the daily life in order to create new works and in general a new contemporary surrealism where the esthetical pleasure is in the first place but can also generate a real connection with the audience. Every artwork is characterized by rich, intense but balanced colours, a distinctive trait of Greta’s art. The deep connection with nature is another fundamental element of her art, intended as an act of liberation of the inner reality. Every painting is for the artist like a new lover, who generates new emotions and brings new experiences. Daria Cremonesi
