MARTIN RANGELOV

For Martin Rangelov, BIOMECHANICAL, GOTHIC, DEMONIC and MAGIC are the most important words of his artistic vocabulary. The first suggestion came from the movie world; precisely his works were inspired by the characters of Predator, the science-fiction movie that he saw two hundred times, and by Giger, the sculptor and set designer who won an Academy Awards on Visual Effect for the film Alien. He creates surreal and macabre sculptures and masks made by polymer clay. Rangelov said that an artist must create with his own hands, because in that way he can feel the soul and the heart of his work, but maybe in the future he will create art with computer programs. His art is based on mechanical and even biological details showing human and robotic faces. He works inside his head with his ideas and perspectives; he doesn’t use papers or sketches because the masks are part of him. “When I create these masks I’m feeling relax. It’s one thing when people see them and how they see them it totally different looking them trough my eyes. They are made with passion and attention to detail. They are part of my soul but I think it’s a reverse trick…because I am not a dark person at all…”. When he is working, he uses to start from a template in clay carved with his own hands and various tools, and then he applies colors like gold and silver. These are the only information about his working method, because he doesn’t want to release his secrets in order to lead someone to be able to use them. So he is very jealous of his knowledge and his experience. In his future he would like to shoot videos and movies, following in this way the path of as his great model Hans Ginger. He will open to new collaboration. His art is ready to be applied to many fields, like design, fashion design and visual effect. Could his sculptures become science movie costumes? Maybe in the future we can see his works in science-fiction movie or turn into an unusual and unconventional collection of objects design. Working with new material (silicone, plasticines, pastes, resins), maybe soft ones, he will achieve powerful and vanguard outcomes.
