PABLO PICASSO “Un tableau ne vit que par celui qui le regarde” . Celestial love

Imagine being in the light blue colour of the ocean, only water and a shining colour that reflects the light of sun, all of a sudden indistinguishable sea creatures materialize in a playful swirl of movement. Joy. I am not alone anymore. Imagine now a dark black and a thunderous explosion. Fear. How can fear and joy be described? Rage or relief, loneliness or solidarity? Nathalie Serero has the answer: through colour, movement, contrasts and thick brushes. The descriptive activity does not exist anymore, only

Soul

the five senses are necessary, as if we needed to sharpen them to face a survival race. The absence of a figurative subject does not make colours and shapes less important, on the contrary, they are the essence of the work, they simply transcend every possible individualization. In this difficulty of interpretation the artist allows the spectator to look for recognisable images in her paintings, as if he was laying on the grass looking at the sky to find figurative shapes in the clouds; from time to time he won’t be disappointed: dots of colours become heads, stretched brushes limbs and hints of pastel colours become dresses of woman from the Renaissance.

Imagination indeed distinguishes humans from any other living creature, it is therefore a duty to make practice with this gift; on the contrary it is more difficult for people to fully absorb the present moment, fact that happens to be easier to any other being: the mind runs to yesterday or tomorrow and never stops on here and now. Nathalie wants to give value to the present as the only true treasure of men who are the only ones to perceive the unicity of the moment, even though they escape from it.

Here then lays the origin of paintings such as Tempo Sospeso (Suspended Time), a dream for hard workers but a condemnation for the bored ones, that recall the attention of the spectator on the single instant that contains the infinite. The infinite and immensity of the here and now moment are contemplated in the impersonal backgrounds from which particles of colour emerge generating an explosion, chaos, a sort of artistic big ben that gives voice to spontaneous emotions and feelings that otherwise would remain abstract.

Fascination

The concretization of the intimate and internal world is assimilated on the heels of the Abstract Expressionism that leads Nathalie to go even further: by recognising the similarity if not identity of human passions and sensations and by justifying them as universal, she allows their free expression, without regrets or fear. The same purpose had the artists survivors of the second world war when more than ever it was necessary to insist on humanity, the same one that had to justify the explosion of the two atomic bombs in Japan. This reference to the past is crucial: it witnesses the artist’s reaction to the contemporary apathy and her scream in the wind to awake the humanity inside of us. This silent scream is acknowledged by Nathalie from the long echo shouted by the greatest masters of the past such as Mark Rothko, Wilhelm De Kooning and Jackson Pollock who rely to colour for the expression of the inexplicable.

The Kiss

Blue Epic

Finally, after the single person has reached this awareness, emotions can be shared freely and figures multiply in her paintings: a couple that kisses, dances and communicates through the language that isn’t that of conventional words anymore but that of the heart. The organ of passion belongs to common people, the protagonists of the EpopÊe bleu (The blue Epic), the new heroes that balance on the thread of present and are able to foresee the impulse of a humanity that recognises man in his purer form: as a sensitive and pulsating subject. It is not a case then the title Les yeux du Coeur (Eyes of the Heart), the eyes that learn the universal language shared by everyone that is spread to the five senses. The beat of our vital organ is a continued and curved line on the canvas, it is constant and inevitable, but in the peaceful monotony of the beat, it seems to threaten the possibility of stopping.

Eyes of the heart

“The moment is precious seems to shout the line that can not decompose, it is time to play with the colours of real life, the authentic one. Nathalie gives concreteness to the movements of the soul, she gives evidence to the common nature of all men operating as a great mediator and awakening the humanity inside of us. She throws a rope that everyone needs to grasp: the only inevitable certainty.
