RAFAL STEPNIAK
RAFAL STEPNIAK He specializes in painting, sculpture, drawing and teaching to secondary school students. He has showed his works in 25 solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad (France, Germany, Holland, Romania and Austria). Also he has taken part in 120 collective exhibitions in Poland and many of his art works were exhibited in a lot of Poland’s museums.
His painting is clearly influenced by some artists of the historical avant-garde, in particular Braque and Picasso in his decomposition of reality and the early period of Kandinsky in the choice of his palette. The power of these works is the color viscosity dominates the composition; we don’t distinguish the subjects, because the artist uses an abstractive technique and we understand what he wants to represent only for the titles of the works. Nevertheless, in other Rafal’s works we can perceive human shapes, so the representation becomes more figurative: as in the case of his latest oil, where houses, human beings, horses and elements of nature emerge from the intrigue of black lines and bright colors. He matches clashing color on canvas and creates a sense of restlessness and anxiety that hits for its power. The colorful shapes are made up like images’ tangle that confuse and break observer’s eyes.
He seems to express a double personality in his art, because while the themes of his canvas and his pastels are poetical and cheerful his sculpture is more dark and macabre. Basically, he carves wood creating pieces of leg and body as if they were tree trunks fragments and probably this is the new direction of his art.
