Einleitung

Das Forschungsprojekt „The Culture of Water“, das im Herbstsemester 2018 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) gestartet wurde, wird für die kommenden zwei Semester vom Fokus Architektur & Struktur geführt. Das Hauptziel der fünfjährigen Studie ist die Erforschung der Architektur, der Lebens- und Landschaftsbedingungen um den Vierwaldstättersee und um den nordöstlich von Kyoto gelegenen Lake Biwa, dem grössten Süsswassersee Japans. Im zweiten Semester hatte sich der Fokus Material mit dem Thema „Wasser und Gefahr“ am Vierwaldstättersee befasst. Für das dritte Semester nimmt der Fokus Architektur & Struktur das Thema „Wasser und Gefahr“ erneut auf und transloziert die Aufgabenstellung ans Ufer des Lake Biwa, wo sich der Fokus unter neuen kulturellen und topografischen Gegebenheiten mit Fragen zu Wasser, Gefahr und Natur auseinandersetzt.

Im folgenden Semester befasst sich der Fokus Architektur & Energie mit dem Element Wasser unter einem anderen wichtigen Thema: der Ressourcenknappheit. Im Kontext der aktuellen Wasserkrise von Kapstadt schöpft der Fokus aus technischen & politischen Fragestellungen architektonische Themen heraus. Der Fokus wird ein „Urban Lab Building“ im dichten Township Delft entwerfen, welches den Studierenden von UCTs School of Architecture and Planning ein Eintauchen in das Alltagsleben der „realen“ Stadt ermöglicht und dabei als Infrastruktur und Community-Plattform zum öffentlichen Raum ihrer Nachbarschaft beiträgt.

Der Fokus Architektur & Material widmet sich dem schweizerischen Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg. Jenseits der kulturhistorischen Museumsobjekte plant der Fokus eine zeitgemässe Neukonzeption des Auftrittes für die museumsdienenden Bauten. Es sind Bauten die dem Unterhalt dienen, die infrastrukturelle Bedürfnisse der Besucher abdecken und auch Räume, die für die Gastronomie notwendig sind. Ziel der Projektaufgabe ist die Entwicklung eines Bausystem „Ballenberg“. Dieses System soll geeignet sein unterschiedliche Bautypen für verschiedene Nutzungen in einer gestalterisch zusammenhängende Gesamterscheinung abzubilden.

Zusätzlich zu einem der Projektmodule werden fünf umfangreiche Module im Regelsemester entlang des Berufsbildes angeboten. Sie bedingen notwendige Vertiefungen in die eigentliche Materie und fragen verschiedene Kompetenzen zwischen fachlichen, methodischen und sozialen Fähigkeiten ab. Ein interdisziplinäres Lehrteam führt durch die unterschiedlichen Module.

Preface

The research project „The Culture of Water”, which began jointly with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in the autumn semester of 2018, will be led in the next two semesters from the Focus Architecture & Structure.

The main goal is to study architectural, living and landscape conditions in the surroundings of Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa. The latter is Japan‘s largest freshwater lake and lies northeast of Kyoto. In the second semester, the Focus Material addressed the topic „Water and Hazard“, looking at a part of Lake Lucerne that is particularly sensitive in this respect. The Focus Architecture & Structure continues the theme and shifts their focus to the lakefront of the Lake Biwa, where the Focus considers questions of water, hazard and nature under the Japanese context.

In the upcoming semester, the Focus Architecture & Energy investigates the element of water under another vital aspect: water scarcity. In the context of the actual water crisis in Cape Town the theme of water will be present as both a technical and political issue from which architectonic themes will be drawn. The focus designs an Urban Lab Building for the dense township Delft, which gives the students from UCTs School of Architecture the possibility to plunge into the daily life of the „real“ city.

The Urban Lab also supplies the infrastructure and community-platform for the public space in the neighbourhood.

The Focus Architecture & Material dedicates in their study the Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg. Beyond the cultural heritage of the museum objects, the Focus plans a contemporary concept and renewed appearance for the museum-serving buildings. These buildings are for generally managing the museum, providing the infrastructure for visitor needs, as well as rooms and space necessary for food services. The aim of the project task is the development of a modular system „Ballenberg“. This system must be suited for the various types of buildings for different uses and should harmonise with the overall appearance of the museum complex.

In addition to one of the focus projects, five extensive modules are offered during the regular semester along the architectural profession. They require more intensive work on specific topics and call for the application of knowledge, methodological and social skills. An interdisciplinary team of lecturers guides the students through the various modules.

The Culture of Water: HSLU-KIT Forschungsprojekt

In diesem Semester werden wir das Forschungsprojekt „The Culture of Water“ weiterentwickeln, das im Herbstsemester 2018 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) gestartet wurde. Das Hauptziel der Studie ist die Erforschung der Architektur, der Landschaft und der Lebensbedingungen um den Vierwaldstättersee und um den nordöstlich von Kyoto gelegenen Lake Biwa, dem grössten Süsswassersee Japans. Dies ist das dritte Semester des fünfjährigen Forschungsprojektes, das einen facettenreichen Beitrag zur Analyse, zur Diskussion und zur Architektur rund um die beiden Seen liefern soll. Wir nutzen den architektonischen Entwurf als kreative Forschungsmethode, um plausible Lösungen für ein zeitgemässes Bauen mit, auf und neben dem Wasser zu entwickeln.

Im ersten Semester des Forschungsprojektes untersuchten wir allgemeine Aspekte bezüglich des Zusammenhangs zwischen menschlichen Siedlungen und natürlichen Lebensräumen in direktem Kontakt mit dem Wasser, sowie die Art und Weise wie Architektur gestaltet wird, wenn

Wasser nicht nur als Landschaftselement, sondern auch als Gestaltungswerkzeug betrachtet wird. Durch die Betrachtung verschiedener urbaner Massstäbe und Typologien um den Vierwaldstättersee und den Lake Biwa, von Städten und industriell geprägten Gebieten bis hin zu alleinstehenden Gebäuden und unbebauten Landschaften, haben wir ein breites Verständnis für die Besonderheiten der einzelnen Kontexte gewonnen.

Im zweiten Semester haben wir uns mit dem Thema „Wasser und Gefahr“ auseinander gesetzt, indem wir uns diesbezüglich mit einem besonders sensiblen Gebiet des Vierwaldstättersees beschäftigt haben. In diesem Semester werden wir den Fokus auf den japanischen Kontext verlagern und über Fragen zu Wasser, Gefahr und Natur im westlichen Teil der Präfektur Shiga am Lake Biwa nachdenken.

The Culture of Water. HSLU-KIT Joint Research Project

This semester we will be continuing with the research project „The Culture of Water“, which began jointly with the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in the autumn semester of 2018. The main goal is to study architectural, living and landscape conditions around Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa, located northwest of Tokyo, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. This is the third semester of the five-year research project, which aims to offer a multifaceted contribution to the analysis, discussion and architecture around both lakes. We will use the architectural design as a creative method of research to develop plausible solutions to contemporary building with, on and next to water.

In the first semester of the research project, we studied general aspects of the connection between human settlements and natural habitats in direct contact with water as well as how architecture is designed when water is not just an element of the landscape but is also regarded as a design tool.

By observing different urban scales and typologies around Lake Lucerne and Lake Biwa, areas characterized by cities and industrial regions as well as freestanding buildings and unbuilt landscapes, we obtained a broad understanding of the particular features of the individual contexts.

In the second semester, we addressed the topic „Water and Hazard“, looking at a part of Lake Lucerne that is particular sensitive in this respect. In this semester, we will shift our focus to the Japanese context and consider questions of water, hazard and nature in the western part of Shiga Prefecture at Lake Biwa.

Die Kraft des Wassers zu kontrollieren ist eine Herausforderung, die uns während des gesamten Entwurfsprozesses begleiten wird, angefangen von der Planung auf territorialer Ebene, über die Struktur bis hin zur Konstruktion. In diesem Sinne entwickeln wir mittels konkreter Entwürfe Strategien und Szenarien, um über den Einfluss von Naturgefahren auf die Architektur und umgekehrt nachzudenken.

Der bekannte Ansatz sich mit Bauten vor Naturgefahren zu schützen ist weitgehend technisch geprägt, da das Thema noch kaum in den architektonischen Diskurs aufgenommen wurde. Wir schlagen vor diesen Trend zu ändern, indem wir einen architektonischen Zugang zu diesem Thema auf drei Hauptebenen vorschlagen: -

Auf territorialer Ebene, indem die Zonen definiert werden, in denen Gebäude mit weniger Naturrisiken konfrontiert sind.

Auf der Ebene des Gebäudes, indem man den Schutzbedarf als Gestaltungsmittel betrachtet, das die Gebäudekonzeption, die Struktur und den architektonischen Ausdruck bestimmt.

Auf der Ebene der Konstruktion, wobei Wasser als Gefahr, aber auch als Quelle zur Erzeugung einer einzigartigen Atmosphäre betrachtet wird.

Controlling the energy of water is a challenge that will accompany us throughout the design process, beginning with planning on a territorial level by way of the structure to the construction. In this sense we seek to develop by means of specific designs strategies and scenarios to reflect on the impact of natural hazards on architecture for protection and vice versa.

The familiar approach to protecting buildings from natural hazards is largely technical in nature, since the topic has hardly been taken up at all in the discourse on architecture. We propose to change that trend by advocating an architectural approach to the subject on three main levels: -

On the territorial level, by defining zones in which buildings are confronted with fewer natural risks.

On the level of the building, by regarding the need for protection as a design means that determines the concept for the building, the structure and the architectural expression.

On the level of the construction, by regarding water as a hazard but also as a source for producing a unique atmosphere.

Die Chrysantheme und das Schwert: Wasser & Gefahr am Biwa-see

Japan ist ein Land, das von Widersprüchen geprägt ist. So lautet die vorherrschende Meinung. Tradition und bahnbrechende Technologie koexistieren, und die Menschen sind sowohl konservativ wie auch aufgeschlossen. Auch architektonisch hat die rasante Modernisierung des Landes seit den letzten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jahrhunderts verschiedene Entwicklungen ausgelöst, in denen aus dem Westen importierte Materialien und Konzepte mit dem einzigartigen japanischen Verständnis von Raum, Stadt und Kultur vermischt wurden. Ein solcher Trend, der unter dem Einfluss des berühmten Architekten Kenzo Tange entstand und mit westlichen Strömungen wie dem Team 10 übereinstimmt, war der sogenannte Metabolismus. Ab der 1960er Jahre nahmen die Mitglieder dieser Gruppe biologische Konzepte über Wachstum und Wandel zum Anlass, eine neue japanische Architektursprache zu entwickeln. Diese basiert auf dauerhaften und resistenten Megastrukturen, in die austauschbare und vergängliche Kapseln und Bauteile eingesetzt werden. einen direkten Bezug zur Wasserlandschaft und eine Alternative zu den zerstörten Städten der Nachkriegszeit. „Trotz der Gefahr, missverstanden zu werden, wage ich die Aussage, dass der Unterschied zwischen dem westlichen und dem japanischen Raum ein Unterschied zwischen einem Raum in Gegensätzen und einem Raum in Kontinuität und Symbiosis ist. Trotz der internationalen Anerkennung der Metabolisten lohnt es sich, auch andere einzigartige Aspekte der japanischen Architektur und des Städtebaus in Bezug auf Stadterneuerung, Vergänglichkeit und Schutz zu betrachten, um den theoretischen Hintergrund zum Thema Wasser und Gefahr aufzubauen. Im Hinblick auf den widersprüchlichen Charakter der japanischen Kultur ist es interessant zu erwähnen, wie stark in die

natürliche Umwelt eingegriffen wird um die Bevölkerung vor potenziellen Bedrohungen zu schützen. Dies steht in starkem Gegensatz zur scheinbaren Leichtigkeit und Flüchtigkeit der Häuser und sogar der Tempel, sowohl auf dem Land als auch in den Städten. Die Frage nach der Vergänglichkeit und Flexibilität gebauter Strukturen und ihrer Koexistenz mit dauerhaften urbanen Infrastrukturen sollte mit Begriffen wie Eigenverantwortung, wirtschaftlichem Wert und einem sehr konkreten Verständnisses von Raum und Zeit in der japanischen Kultur in Verbindung gebracht werden.

Der oben beschriebene theoretische Hintergrund wird ein wesentliches Grundwissen bilden, um den Standort für dieses Semester zu untersuchen: den Shiga District. Das Gebiet liegt am Westufer des Lake Biwa in der Präfektur Shiga, weniger als eine Stunde Zugreise von Kyoto entfernt. Das Gebiet hat eine Ausdehnung von etwa 70 km2 und 20’000 Einwohner. Die Kosei-Linie, eine Pendler-Eisenbahnstrecke, verläuft entlang dem Seeufer und wird von der West Japan Rail Company betrieben. In Anlehnung an die in den letzten zwei Semestern von „The Culture of Water“ angewandte Methodik, werden entlang des Shiga District eine Reihe von Landstreifen ausgewählt. Die Studierenden werden die Landstreifen analysieren und einen architektonischen Entwurf entwickeln, der auf die ortstypischen Singularitäten reagiert. Insgesamt sieben Streifen von 1000 x 200 Metern Ausdehnung stehen jeweils in direktem Zusammenhang mit einer Bahnstation der Kosei-Linie. Jeder Streifen wird von einem Team aus HSLUund KIT-Studenten bearbeitet, die während des gesamten Semesters im Austausch stehen.

Japan is a country marked by contradictions. That is the traditional view.

Tradition and pioneering technology coexist, and the people are both conservative and open. Architecturally, too, the rapid modernisation of the country since the last decades of the nineteenth century has triggered various developments in which materials and concepts imported from the West were mixed with the uniquely Japanese understanding of space, city and culture. One such a trend, which emerged under the influence of the famous architect Kenzo Tange and corresponds with Western currents such as Team 10, was so-called metabolism. From the 1960s, the members of this group used biological concepts of growth and change to develop a new Japanese architectural idiom. It was based on durable and resistant megastructure into which interchangeable and temporary capsules were inserted. Radical projects such as Kiyonori Kikutake’s Marine City and

Tange’s Tokyo Bay offered a direct connection to the waterscape and an alternative to the destroyed cities of the post-war period. „At the risk of being misunderstood, I would like to suggest that the difference between Western space and Japanese space is that Western space is discrete and space in Japan is continuous. Despite the international recognition of the Metabolists, it pays to consider other unique aspects of Japanese architecture and urban planning in relation to urban renewal, temporariness and protection in order to construct the historical background for the theme of water and hazard. Considering the contradictory nature of Japanese culture, it is interesting to note how much they intervene in the natural environment to prevent the public from potential threats. This is in stark contrast to the apparent lightness and fleetingness of buildings and even of temples, both in the countryside and in the cities. The question of the temporariness and flexibility of built structures and their coexistence with permanent urban

infrastructure should be tied to terms such as self-responsibility, economic value and a very concrete understanding of time and space in Japanese culture.

The theoretical background described above will form an essential foundation of knowledge to study the location for this semester: the Shiga District. It lies on the western short of Lake Biwa in the Prefecture of Shiga, less than an hour by train from Kyoto. The region has an area of around 70 square kilometres and 20,000 residents. The Kosei line, a commuter railway, runs along the lakeshore and is operated by the West Japan Rail Company. Taking up the methodology developed in the previous two semesters of „The Culture of Water“, a series of strips of land is selected along the Shiga District. The students will analyse these strips of land and develop an architectural design that responds to the singularities typical of the place. There are seven strips in all measuring 1,000 by 200 metres, and each one is directly connected to a train station on the Kosei line.

Each strip is studied by a team of HSLU and KIT students who remain in contact throughout the semester.

Wasser, Gefahr, Struktur und Kontext sind die Begriffe die uns auch in der Formulierung des Programms leiten werden. Die Studierenden werden auf Grund der Analyse des Ortes, der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Forschungsthema und ihren persönlichen Interessen ein individuelles Programm entwickeln. Da in Japan von Erdbeben und nachfolgenden, kollateralen Ereignissen die weitaus grösste Gefahr ausgeht, werden wir auf diese Naturgefahren fokussieren. Dabei ist denkbar, dass die Architektur der Gefahr widersteht. Vielleicht wird auch nur die Trag- oder die Primärstruktur überleben, und gewisse Bauteile werden nach einem Naturereignis erneuert werden müssen. Und vielleicht ist gerade die Verletzlichkeit und Vergänglichkeit der Struktur ein adäquates Mittel sich mit Gefahr auseinander zu setzen. Folgende Fragen sind zu beantworten: Wie baut man am, auf und im Wasser?

Wie wird der Übergang von Land zu Wasser gestaltet?

Welche Strukturen werden dauerhaft und welche temporär ausgebildet, und wie stehen sie zueinander?

Welches Programm entspricht dem architektonischen Konzept? und… wie thematisiert man Gefahr?

Wesentlich ist nicht die Grösse, sondern der Massstab des Projektes. Water, hazard, structure and context are the terms that will also guide us in formulating the programme. The students will develop an individual programme based on an analysis of the site, study of the research topic and their personal interests. Because the biggest hazard in Japan by far comes from earthquakes and the collateral events that follow them, we will focus on natural hazards. Yet it is conceivable that architecture resists the hazard. Perhaps only the supporting or primary structure will survive, and certain parts will have to be replaced after a natural event. And perhaps precisely the vulnerability and temporariness of the structure are sufficient means to confront the hazard. The following questions should be answered: How does one build at, on and in water?

How should the transition from land to water be designed?

Which structures are made permanent and which temporary, and how do they relate to one another?

Which programme suits the architectural concept? and … how does one thematise hazard?

The essential thing is not the size of the project but its scale. The goal is to design a structure that can make a relevant contribution to the theme and the site.

Struktur Structure

Der Begriff Struktur begleitet uns auf allen Ebenen der Architektur und über den gesamten Entwurfsprozess. Sowohl die Struktur der Stadt, des Raumes wie auch der tragenden Elemente sind für den Entwurf prägend. Struktur steht für Ordnung und für das Rationale in der Architektur. Das strukturierte Denken und Entwerfen bilden die Basis für Projekte, die kohärente Antworten zu komplexen Fragestellungen geben können.

In diesem Semester werden insbesondere die Struktur der Landschaft und des Territoriums, die Differenzierung von Primär - und Sekundärstrukturen, aber auch der Umgang mit Infrastruktur eine wesentliche Rolle im Entwurfsprozess spielen.

The concept of structure accompanies us on all levels of architecture and throughout the design process. The structure of the city, that of the space and that of the load-bearing elements determine the design. Structure stands for order and for the rational in architecture. Structuring thinking and designing form the basis for projects that can offer coherent answers to complex questions.

Tragstruktur Load-Bearing Structure

Eine Tragstruktur beschreibt die Art der Zusammensetzung von Tragelementen zu einem Tragwerk mit den Regeln über das Verhältnis und das Zusammenwirken der Elemente. Je höher die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Tragwerks sein muss, desto wichtiger ist die präzise Entwicklung der dazu gehörenden Tragstruktur.

Die Entwurfsaufgabe in diesem Semester ist sehr stark durch die Einflüsse des Wassers geprägt. Der damit verbundene bauliche Schutz vor Wasser und die entstehenden Kräfte erfordern eine hohe Leistung vom Tragwerk. Einerseits wird dadurch die Auseinandersetzung mit den Einflüssen und Auswirkungen von Wasser auf das Gebäude zur Notwendigkeit, andererseits resultiert das Potential mit Wasserkraft als treibendem Faktor ein architektonisches und tragstrukturelles Konzept zu entwickeln. Ein anderer Aspekt für die Entwicklung der Tragstruktur ist die höhere Gefahr von Erdbeben in der Region des Lake Biwa. Während die Erdbebensicherheit für Gebäude in der Schweiz relativ einfach zu erfüllen ist tritt sie hier mehr in den Vordergrund und kann ebenfalls zu einem wichtigen Faktor für das Tragstruktur- und Gebäudekonzept werden.

In diesem Kurs soll für Tragstruktur und Tragwerk nicht nur die technische Funktionstüchtigkeit das Ziel sein. Vielmehr wollen wir beides kontinuierlich und zusammen mit dem architektonischen Konzept und den anderen Aspekten des Projekts entwickeln. Im Entwurf bietet die Tragstruktur ein hohes Potential, da das Tragwerk eine nicht austauschbare Notwendigkeit und der langlebigste Teil eines Gebäudes ist. Ein architektonisches Konzept kann demnach dauerhaft in einem Bauwerk verankert werden wenn das tragstrukturelle Konzept kohärent dazu ist.

A load-bearing structure describes the nature of the assembly of the load-bearing elements into a supporting structure using rules about the relationship and interaction of elements. The stronger a supporting structure must be, the more important it is to precisely develop its load-bearing elements.

The design assignment for this semester is very much determined by the influences of water. The associated architectural protection against water and the resulting forces place great demands on the supporting structure. On the one hand that makes it necessary to address the influences and effects of water on the building; on the other hand it results in the potential to develop an architectural and structural concept with hydropower as a driving factor. Another aspect when developing the load-bearing structure is the higher risk of earthquakes in the Lake Biwa region. Whereas it is relatively easy to comply with the earthquake safety requirements for buildings in Switzerland, here they become more significant and can also be an important factor in the concept for the load-bearing structure and for the building.

In this course, technical functionality should not be the only goal for the loadbearing elements and the supporting structure. Rather, we want to develop both continuously and together with the architectural concept and the other aspects of the project. In the design, the supporting structure offers great potential, since it is a necessity that cannot be replaced and is the part of a building with the longest lifetime. An architectural concept can therefore only be permanently anchored in a building if the concept for the supporting structure is coherent.

Semesterstruktur Semester Structure

Vorübungen Das Semester beginnt mit zwei Vorübungen wo wir uns mit der Japanischen Architektur der Nachkriegszeit und dem Ort am Lake Biwa auseinandersetzen. Die erste Vorübung hat einen theoretischen und wissenschaftlichen Zugang und dient dazu, sich das notwendige Grundwissen über Japan, seine herausragenden Architekten, Projekte und Bauten in effizienter Form anzueignen. Die Studierenden werden je ein Projekt und dessen Autor analysieren und mittels Powerpoint Projektion präsentieren. In der zweiten Vorübung setzen wir uns mit dem Ort auseinander, ohne diesen physisch zu begehen. Der Modellbau der Streifen wird ergänzt durch die Erforschung, Interpretation und Darstellung des Ortes.

Semesterarbeit Die Semesterarbeit ist gegliedert in Zwischenkritik, Pin-ups und Tischkritiken und wird begleitet durch fachliche Inputs.

Das Semester wird von Thomas Kohlhammer begleitet, mit dem die Entwicklung der Tragstruktur vertieft wird.

The first preliminary exercise takes a theoretical and scholarly approach and serves to efficiently gather necessary basic knowledge about Japan and its outstanding architects, projects and buildings. Each of the students will analyse one project and its author and present it using PowerPoint. In the second preliminary exercise, we study the site without physically going there. The model building of the strips will be supplemented by researching, interpreting and depicting the site.

Semester Project The work of the semester is divided between the interim critique, pin-up reviews and desk critiques and is supported by expert input.

The semester is supervised by Thomas Kohlhammer, who will follow the in-depth development of the supporting structure.

Workshop in Kyoto Der zweiwöchige Workshop in Kyoto bildet das zentrale Element des Semesters.

Wir werden den Ort der Semesteraufgabe besichtigen, die Stadt Kyoto kennenlernen, Exkursionen in die umliegende Landschaft unternehmen und den Austausch mit den japanischen Studierenden und Dozierenden intensivieren.

The projects will be presented using a video projector as a way of deliberately encouraging the narrative element and simplifying exchange with Kyoto. Physiwcal models on various scales are constants of the design process, and it should be possible to present and transport them in a suitcase.

Einführung

Als bauende Architekten treten wir unweigerlich in Beziehung zur Gesellschaft. Die Qualität dieser Beziehung prägt unsere Haltung als Planer. Dennoch ist die Architekturausbildung, und nicht selten auch unsere Berufspraxis, kaum in Berührung mit dem Alltagsleben unserer Städte, den gesellschaftlichen Ereignissen, Bedürfnissen und Verhältnissen ausserhalb unserer professionellen Blase.

Der Campus der University of Cape Town (UCT) liegt am Fusse des majestätischen Tafelberges. Zwischen gepflegter Vegetation und historischen Gebäuden studieren angehende Architekten und Stadtplanerinnen abseits der komplexen Realität ihrer Stadt, die durch ein sehr reiches Kulturleben, aber auch durch massive soziale Ungleichheit und politische Spannungen geprägt ist. Im HS19 werden wir in der Township Delft, einem der grössten und dichtesten informellen Stadtquartiere, ein „Urban Lab Building“ entwerfen, welches den Studierenden von UCTs School of Architecture and Planning ein Eintauchen in das Alltagsleben der „realen“ Stadt und der Mehrzahl ihrer Einwohner ermöglicht. Gleichzeitig sollen das „Urban Lab“ und seine Nutzung direkt und positiv zum öffentlichen Raum ihrer Nachbarschaft beitragen, indem sie Infrastruktur und eine vielfältige Community-Plattform zur Verfügung stellen.

Im Kontext der aktuellen Wasserkrise von Kapstadt begleitet uns dabei das Thema Wasser als technische ebenso wie politische Frage, aus der wir architektonische Themen schöpfen werden.

Introduction

As building architects, we inevitably enter into a relationship with society.

The quality of this relationship shapes our attitude as planners. Nevertheless, architectural education, and not infrequently even our professional practice, is scarcely in touch with everyday life in our cities, with social events, needs and relationships outside of our professional bubble.

The campus of the University of Cape Town (UCT) lies at the foot of majestic Table Mountain. Amid well-tended vegetation and historical buildings, future architects and urban planners find themselves completely detached from the complex reality of their city, which is characterized by a very rich cultural life but also by massive social inequality and political tensions. In the autumn semester of 2019, we will design an Urban Lab Building in der township of Delft, one of the largest and most densely populated informal neighbourhoods, which will give the students of UCT’s School of Architecture and Planning an opportunity to plunge into the daily life of the ‘real’ city and of the majority of its residents. At the same time, the Urban Lab and its use will make a direct and positive contribution to the public realm by providing shared infrastructure and a versatile community platform for the neighbourhood.

In the context of Cape Town’s current water crisis, we will focus on the topic of water as both a technical and political issue from which we will draw architectural themes.

Wasser! Water!

Während die Meeresspiegel ansteigen und unberechenbare Unwetter und Flutkatastrophen sich global häufen, werden sich in absehbarer Zukunft immer mehr Städte mit akuter Wasserknappheit konfrontiert. Entsprechend gross war das weltweite Interesse an der Wasserkrise von Kapstadt. Aufgrund anhaltender Dürre hatte sich seit 2016 eine bis heute andauernde Krise aufgebaut, die ihren Höhepunkt Anfang 2018 fand, als der gefürchtete Day Zero, der Tag, an dem die kommunale Wasserversorgung abgeschaltet hätte werden müssen, nur durch drastische Wassereinsparungsmassnahmen und Nutzungsobergrenzen abgewendet werden konnte. Obwohl sich der Pegel in den die Stadt versorgenden Staureservoirs inzwischen erholt hat, dauern die Krisenmassnahmen weiterhin an.

Vor diesem Hintergrund werden sich die Studierenden in ihrem Projekt jeweils mit einer Strategie im Umgang mit Wasser auseinandersetzen und die Konsequenzen dieser Strategie so weit wie möglich in ihren Entwurf prägen lassen – von Fragen des Städtebau und der Typologie bis hin zu Gestalt und Konstruktion.

I Regenwasser II Wasseraufbereitung III Grundwasser IV Kondensation As ocean levels rise and unpredictable bad weather and flooding catastrophes become more frequent globally, more and more cities will be confronted with acute water shortages in the foreseeable future. The worldwide interest in the water crisis in Cape Town is correspondingly great. A sustained drought since 2016 has resulted in a crisis that continues today; it peaked in early 2019 when the feared Day Zero – the day on which the municipal water authority would have had to turn off the water supply – could be prevented only thanks to drastic water conservation measures and restrictions on water use. Although water levels in the dam reservoirs that supply the city have in the meanwhile recovered, the crisis measures are still in force.

Against this backdrop, in their project each student will address one strategy for dealing with water and will allow the consequences of this strategy to influence his or her design as much as possible – from questions of urban development and typology to design and construction.

Kapstadt Cape Town

Kapstadt liegt im Südwesten der Republik Südafrika am Atlantischen Ozean, das gemässigte subtropische Klima und die geografische Lage der Stadt sind bereits seit hunderten von Jahren Anziehungspunkt für verschiedene Bevölkerungsgruppen. Mit rund 3,7 Millionen Einwohnern ist Kapstadt die drittgrösste Stadt Südafrikas. Im 17. Jahrhundert von holländischen Seefahrern gegründet, wuchs sie durch regen Handel mit Europa und Indien kontinuierlich und setzt sich heute aufgrund ihrer bewegten Geschichte aus unterschiedlichen ethnischen Gruppen zusammen.

Cape Town lies in the southwest of the Republic of South Africa on the Atlantic Ocean; the city’s moderate subtropical climate and geographical location have for centuries made it a point of attraction for different population groups. With around 3.7 million residents, Cape Town is the third largest city in South Africa.

Founded in the seventeenth century by Dutch sailors, it grew continuously thanks to lively trade with Europe and India, and its varied history led to a population composed of diverse ethnic groups.

Townships Townships

Südafrikas Townships sind ein Produkt der Apartheid. Der Native Urban Areas Act von 1923 deklarierte Wohngebiete für die schwarze Bevölkerung, die sogenannten Townships, ausserhalb derer ihnen Landerwerb und Besiedlung untersagt waren.1948 wurde die Apartheid zur Staatspolitik erhoben und somit das Grundprinzip der konsequenten Rassentrennung in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft verfolgt. Eine strenge räumliche Trennung wurde mit dem Erlass des Group Area Act fortgeführt, wodurch bestimmte Gebiete nur bestimmten Rassen zu Wohn- und Geschäftszwecken zur Verfügung standen. Die jetzt illegal gewordenen bestehenden Siedlungen der nicht weissen Bevölkerung, welche häufig in der Nähe geographisch und strukturell privilegierter „weisser“ Areale lagen, wurden zwangsgeräumt. Die betriebene Politik beförderte die Auflösung von Slums und sah die vollständige Aussiedlung der schwarzen Bevölkerung aus den „weissen“ Gebieten vor. In den abgelegenen, um Kapstadt angesiedelten Townships, wurden staatlich finanzierte Häuser gebaut und an die Vertriebenen vermietet. So wurden in Südafrika zwischen 1960 und 1980 etwa 3,4 Millionen Menschen zwangsweise umgesiedelt.

Offiziell waren nur arbeitende Personen ohne Familienanhang in den Townships um die Städte geduldet, doch der Zuzug der schwarzen und farbigen Bevölkerung in die Städte wurde durch die harsche Wohnungspolitik des Apartheidsystems nicht gebremst. Einer Schätzung zufolge lebten 1982 rund 42% der Schwarzen „illegal“ in Kapstadt. Die Townships waren daher hoffnungslos überbevölkert und soziale Probleme spitzten sich zu. Gleichzeitig wurden die Townships zum Hort des Widerstandes gegen das Apartheidsregime. Mit dem Ende der Apartheid und dem Wegfall der beschränkenden Gesetze 1991 nahm der Zuzug in die Townships weiter zu. Unter Präsident Nelson Mandela begann ein umfassender Umgestaltungsprozess dieser Siedlungen mit klarer Zielsetzung: -

Zugang zu angemessenen Unterkünften, die geeignet, angemessen gelegen, erschwinglich und finanziell nachhaltig sind Zugang zu grundlegenden Dienstleistungen wie Wasser, sanitären Anlagen, Müllabfuhr und Elektrizität Grundbesitz unabhängig der Eigentums- oder Mietverhältnisse, sowie Art der Behausung Zugang zu sozialen Diensten und wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten in angemessener Entfernung

Trotz der umfassenden Bemühungen bleiben die ständig wachsende Einwohnerzahl in den Townships und die damit verbundenen Probleme auch heute noch eine der grössten Herausforderungen des Landes.

South Africa’s townships are a product of apartheid. The Native Urban Areas Act of 1923 declared certain residential areas for the black population, so-called townships, outside of which they were not permitted to acquire land or settle.

In 1948, apartheid was made a state policy and was thus the basic principle of systematic separation by race pursued in all realms of society. A strict spatial separation was continued with the edict known as the Group Area Act, in which specific areas were only available to certain races for residential and commercial purposes. The non-white population in existing settlements that had now become illegal – often located near geographically and structurally privileged „white“ areas, were evicted by force. The policy being implemented called for the break up of slums and planned for the complete removal of the black population from „white“ areas. In the remote townships around Cape Town, state-financed houses were built and rented to those who had been displaced. Between 1960 and 1990, around 3.4 million people in South Africa were forcibly resettled.

Officially, only working people without dependent family members were permitted in the townships around the cities, but the influx of the black and coloured population into the cities was not slowed by the harsh housing policy of the apartheid system. According to one estimate, around 42% of the blacks were living „illegally“ in Cape Town in 1982. The townships were thus hopelessly overpopulated, and social problems intensified. At the same time, the townships became the bulwark of resistance to the apartheid regime. After the end of apartheid and the restrictive laws in 1991, the influx into the townships continued to increase.

Under President Nelson Mandela, a comprehensive process to redesign these settlements began with clear objectives: -

access to suitable accommodations that were appropriately located, affordable and financially sustainable access to basic services such as water, sanitary facilities, rubbish removal and electricity real estate not dependent on ownership and tenant relationships or type of housing access to social services and economic opportunities within reasonable distance

Despite extensive efforts, the constantly growing number of residents in the townships and the associated problems are still among the greatest challenges for the country.

Ort Site

Delft ist eine Township am Rande von Kapstadt und liegt zwischen dem internationalen Flughafen von Kapstadt und den Townships Belhar, Blue Downs & Site C und Khayelitsha. Delft wurde 1989 als erste Township der Post-Apartheids-Ära mit gemischten Rassen von farbigen und schwarzen Einwohnern in Kapstadt gegründet. Heute leben in Delft rund 150‘000 Einwohner. Laut der letzten Volkszählung setzt sich die Bevölkerung aus 51% Farbigen, 46% Schwarzen mit 3% „sonstigen Ethnien“ zusammen. Die Siedlung bestand zunächst nur aus staatlich finanzierten Wohnbauten mit einigen Schulen und öffentlichen Einrichtungen. In den letzten dreissig Jahren wurde die Siedlung jedoch radikal von den Bewohnern verändert. Während die öffentlichen Gebäude meist unverändert geblieben sind, haben die Bewohner ihre Wohnhäuser und den öffentlichen Raum weitgehend umgestaltet.

Der Ort unserer Intervention befindet sich in Delft South, auch Suburban genannt, einer der sieben Divisionen innerhalb der riesigen Township. Delft South ist eine der dichtesten Gebiete von Delft und hat überwiegend Xhosa-sprachige Anwohner. Delft Main Road ist die Nord-Süd-Lebensader der Nachbarschaft und Katalysator für den intensiven Strassenhandel. Das Netzwerk von Freiflächen ist durch das städtische Wassermanagementsystem verbunden und überschneidet sich mit vielen aufstrebenden kulturellen informellen Gruppierungen. Die städtische Textur von Delft South ist kleinmasstäblicher und in seiner Wirkung intimer als andere Teile von Delft.

Delft is a township on the outskirts of Cape Town between the international airport of Cape Town and the townships Belhar, Blue Downs & Site C and Khayelitsha. Delft was founded in 1989 as the first township of the post-apartheid era of mixed race with black and coloured residents. Today, around 150,000 residents live in Delft. According to the latest census, the population is composed of 51% coloureds, 46% blacks and 3% „other ethnicities“. The settlement was originally composed entirely of state-financed residential buildings with several schools and public institutions. Over the past thirty years, however, it has been radically changed by the residents. Whereas most of the public buildings have been left unchanged, the residents have largely redesigned their homes and the public space.

The site of our intervention is in Delft South, also known as Suburban, one of seven divisions in this enormous township. Delft South is one of the most densely populated areas of Delft and has overwhelmingly Xhosa-speaking residents. Delft Main Road is the north–south lifeline of the neighbourhood and the catalyst for the intense street trade. The network of open spaces connects through the urban water management system and overlaps with many emergent cultural informal groupings. The scale of the site and the grain of the urban texture in Delft South is more small-scale and intimate than other divisions in the Delft area.

Programm Programme

Im Urban Lab kommen verschiedene Nutzungen, sowohl für die Universität und für die unmittelbare Nachbarschaft und Gemeinschaft, als auch für die spezifische Wassernutzung zusammen. Neben Forschung und Entwurfsstudios sollen auch Unterricht und Workshops stattfinden. Die letzteren Nutzungen sollen dabei sowohl für die Universität als auch für die Anwohnerinnen nutzbar sein. Programmatische Synergien zwischen Lehre, Forschung und Community sollen bewusst genutzt und gestaltet werden. Das jeweilige Wasserthema soll explizit mit architektonischen Gestaltungsmitteln behandelt werden. Die unterschiedlichen Themen und verschiedenen Ansätze im Umgang mit denselben führen dabei zwangsläufig zu unterschiedlichen Standorten und Nutzungen, die durch die Studierenden innerhalb des vorgegebenen Betrachtungsperimeters selbst definiert werden.

Various uses come together in the Urban Lab, both for the university and for the immediate neighbourhood and community and for specific water use. In addition to research and design studios, there will also be teaching and workshops. The latter uses will be both for the university and for residents. Programmatic synergies between teaching, research and community should be deliberately used and designed.

Each water topic should be explicitly treated by means of the architectural design.

The different themes and different approaches to dealing with them necessarily lead to different locations and uses, which the students will define themselves within a given perimeter in Delft South.

Semesterstruktur Semester Structure

Die Arbeit im Semesterentwurf ist begleitet durch wöchentliche Tischkritiken und strukturiert durch Workshops, Zwischen- und Schlusskritik. Die Studierenden lernen so, ihre eigene Entwurfshaltung zu formulieren und durch kritische Reflexion laufend zu präzisieren. Regelmässige Präsentationen in Wort und Bild zeichnen den eigenen Prozessablauf ab, fördern die Selbstreflexion und geben in der Repetition eine Entwurfssicherheit. Die Entwurfsmethodik im Fokusprojekt wird ausserdem in Bereiche strukturiert, welche in gemeinsamen Workshops fortlaufend durch das Semester vertieft werden. Diese bedingen sich gegenseitig und werden zum Semesterende hin synthetisiert: Wissensaneignung Forschungsgruppe im Klassenverband: Analysen und laufende Problemlösungen werden strukturiert im Kollektiv besprochen. Im Klassenverband können so grosse Mengen an Wissen gesammelt, sowie Erfahrungen ausgetauscht werden. Das Lehrteam stellt Material zur spezifischen Thematik zur Verfügung.

Energie im Entwurf Im Entwurf des Urban Labs arbeiten die Studierenden von typologischen Fragen bis zum detaillierten Gebäudemassstab: Was sind die Eigenheiten des Programms im spezifischen Kontext und wo findet es seinen Ort? Wie sieht eine den lokalen Möglichkeiten angemessene Konstruktion, Struktur, Materialisierung des Gebäudes aus? Welchen Einfluss haben klimatische und energetische Gegebenheiten, vor allem die Thematik des Wassers?

Künstlerische Betrachtung Die Annäherung an die Entwurfsaufgabe geschieht bereits in der Vorübung über das atmosphärische Bild. Das Modell als Arbeitswerkzeug und daraus erzeugte Bilder helfen uns auch im weiteren Semesterverlauf, den Entwurf sowohl räumlich und konstruktiv, als auch atmosphärisch weiterzuentwickeln. Am Ende dieser Entwicklung steht ein Breathing Image, eine Bildform, die wir zusammen mit der Künstlerin Esther Mathis erarbeiten und die uns erlaubt, immateriell-energetische und sinnlich-atmosphärische Phänomene darzustellen – Licht, Temperatur, Luftbewegung, Reflexion...

Work on the semester design is accompanied by weekly table reviews and structured by workshops and the midterm and final review. Students thus learn to formulate their own attitude about design and to continuously make their critical reflection more precise. Regular presentations using words and images distinguish each student’s own process, encouraging self-reflection and providing design confidence through repetition. The design methodology of the focus project is also structured into areas that are continuously studied in greater depth in joint workshops throughout the semester. They reinforce one another and are synthesised at the end of the semester: Knowledge Acquisition Research in class formation: analyses and ongoing solutions to problems are discussed in a structured way in the collective. Within the class formation, this makes it possible to gather lots of knowledge and to exchange experiences. The teaching team makes material on specific topics available.

Energy in Design When designing the Urban Lab, students work out from typological questions to the detailed building scale: What are the properties of the programme in the specific context, and where does it find its place? What do the construction, structure and materialisation of the building appropriate to the local possibilities look like? What influence do climatic and energetic conditions have, above all the themes of water?

Artistic View The design task is already approached in the preliminary exercise by way of the atmospheric image. The model as tool and the images produced with it will also help us over the course of the semester to refine the design not only spatially and constructively but also atmospherically. At the end of this development process, there is a breathing image, a visual form that we work out in collaboration with the artist Esther Mathis, which enables us to depict immaterial-energetic and sensory-atmospheric phenomena: light, temperature, air movement, reflection ‌

Das Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg

Über 100 Wohn- und Wirtschaftsbauten aus der ganzen Schweiz sind im Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg zu entdecken und zu bestaunen. Die stattlichen Bauernhäuser, die bescheidenen Bauten der Taglöhner, die Alpsiedlungen oder die Ställe, Scheunen, Speicher, Waschhäuschen und Dörröfen veranschaulichen als architektonische und als sozialgeschichtliche Zeugen das Alltagsleben und die ländliche Kultur vergangener Zeiten. Die historischen Gebäude konnten am ursprünglichen Standort nicht erhalten bleiben und wurden deshalb sorgfältig abgetragen und auf dem 66 Hektar grossen Museumsgelände wieder aufgebaut. Küchen, Kammern und Wohnstuben vermitteln Einblicke in das ländliche Alltagsleben in der Schweiz.

Die Vertreter der verschiedenen Hauslandschaften der Schweiz bilden jedoch nur einen Teil des Freilichtmuseums Ballenberg. Nach historischen Vorbildern angelegte Bauerngärten, Äcker, Felder, Wiesen und Weiden 39

umgeben die Hofanlagen. In den Gebäuden sind Handwerkerinnen und Handwerker anzutreffen, die mit alten Werkzeugen und Geräten traditionelle Arbeiten ausführen. Diverse thematische Ausstellungen vermitteln einen Blick hinter die Kulissen des ländlichen Alltags. Und die über 250 Bauernhoftiere – die gesamte Palette der einheimischen Nutztierarten – beleben den Ballenberg auf eindrückliche Weise!1 Ausgangslage – Konzept „museumsdienende Bauten“

Das Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg ist mittlerweile gut 40 Jahre alt und der Bedarf für eine zeitgemässe Neukonzeption des Auftrittes jenseits der Museumsobjekte – Bauten, Gärten, Werkstätten etc. – ist gegeben.

Vor diesem Hintergrund spielen die über das gesamte Gelände verteilten museumsdienenden Bauten eine wichtige Rolle, kann mit ihnen doch das Erscheinungsbild stark geprägt werden. Bei diesen Bauten handelt es sich einerseits um für den Betrieb wichtige Bauten, die zentral positioniert werden können, was mit dem Neubau des Sammlungsdepots angestrebt wird.

Andererseits sind dies Bauten die dem Unterhalt dienen, die infrastrukturelle Bedürfnisse der Besucher abdecken und auch Räume, die für die Gastronomie notwendig sind.

Das Konzept für den Neubau eines Sammlungsdepots mit Betriebsflächen ist weit gediehen und die Notwendigkeit nachgewiesen. Dagegen ist ein Konzept für die Nebenbauten auf dem Gelände des Freilichtmuseums noch nicht weiter vertieft worden.

Betrieb auf dem Gelände

Die betrieblichen Gegebenheiten werden vor Ort erörtert und damit auch die Charakteristik dieses „Museums“ erlebbar gemacht.

Neben den Bauten sind auch einige bedeutende und interessante Handwerke auf dem Areal versammelt. → Holzschnitzen, Hutmachen, Kalkbrennen / Kalklöschen, Klöppeln, Knochenstampfen, Köhlern, Korbflechten, Posamenten, Sägen, Sattlern, Schindeln, Schmieden, Seilen , Stricken / Strickspitzen, Töpfern, Wagnern, Weben, Ziegeln2

Damit wird nicht nur die Erscheinung der historischen vernakulären Baukultur vermittelt, sondern auch das implizite Wissen dieser traditionellen Handwerke weiter gepflegt. Dies ist eine wichtige Quelle der Inspiration für die gestellte Aufgabe und die Frage, wie heute Bauwerke in einem, auch über den Ballenberg hinaus gesehen, noch weitgehend handwerklich geprägten Kontext geplant und gebaut werden könnten.

Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg

You can visit and admire over 100 rural houses and farm buildings from all over Switzerland. Magnificent farmhouses, humble workers’ quarters, alpine huts and stalls, barns, store-houses, wash-houses and drying ovens provide architectural as well as socio-historical testimony to the everyday life and rural culture of the past.

These historical buildings could not be maintained at their original location and were, therefore, carefully dismantled and transported to the museum’s 66 hectares of land to be reconstructed. Kitchens, parlours and other quarters provide insight into the daily life of rural Switzerland.

Representative houses of the different farmhouse styles of Switzerland make up, however, only a part of the Museum. Gardens, fields, pastures and meadows, set up according to historical models, surround the farmsteads and houses. In the buildings, there are craftspeople who work

with traditional tools, while various theme exhibits give you an insight into scenes of rural former days. Moreover, about 250 farm animals, representing the whole gamut of native domestic animals, provide lively and interesting scenes at Ballenberg!1 Point of Departure – Concept for Museum Facility Buildings

Meanwhile the open-air museum Ballenberg is some 40 years old and the need has arisen for a new up-to-date presentation concept that goes beyond the museum objects – buildings, gardens, workshops etc. Against this backdrop, the museum facility buildings – distributed throughout the grounds – play an important role and can strongly influence the overall appearance. On the one hand some of these buildings are important for running the actual museum and can be constructed at a central location, which is planned in the case of the new storage building for the collection.

On the other hand some of the buildings are for generally managing the museum, providing the infrastructure for visitor needs as well as rooms and space necessary for food services.

The concept for the new storage building for the museum holdings with areas for other functions is far advanced and the necessity for the building established. However, a concept for the facility and annex buildings on the open-air museum premises is still only in its very early stages.

The operational conditions will be explained on site and thus also give you a palpable impression of the characteristics of this „museum“.

Crafts and trades offered on the museum grounds

Besides buildings, the premises feature a number of meaningful and interesting crafts and professional skills: → Woodcarving, hat making, lime burning and slaking, tatting or bobbin lace making, bone meal production, charcoal burning, basket weaving, passemetrie, sawing, saddlery, shingle making, forging, rope making, knitting and hand-knitted lacework, pottery, waggon making (wainwright), weaving, tile making.2

Therefore the museum conveys not only an objective impression of the historical vernacular culture of building but also passes down the implicit knowledge of these traditional crafts to future generations. This aspect of the museum is an important source of inspiration for the assigned task, and for the question as to how we can plan and construct buildings today in a context that is still to a large extent shaped by craft skills – a question that is relevant even beyond Ballenberg.

Atmosphäre

Der Begriff Atmosphäre taucht bei Peter Zumthor wie bei Juhani Pallasmaa auf und Gernot Böhme, Philosoph mit einem Themenschwerpunkt in der Technik, hat dazu ein erhellendes Buch geschrieben: Architektur und Atmosphäre. Daraus sind die folgenden Zitate, die einen Einblick geben in das Potential dieses Begriffes, für ein zeitgenössisches Verständnis der Architektur. Diese Zitate sind ergänzt durch einige persönliche Gedanken zur Konstruktion.

Konstruktion ist sowohl ein Akt des Denkens wie des physischen Tuns. In der Architektur zu oft als technische Methode verstanden, die den Herstellungsprozess systematisch darstellen will.

Grundsätzlicher ist Konstruktion aber der Prozess des Zusammenbringens unterschiedlicher Aspekte, vom Programm über topografische Gegebenheiten bis zu Werkstoffen. In diesem Sinne ist der Prozess des Entwerfens eine konstruktive Handlungsweise, die eine äusserst resultatoffene hochkomplexe Ausgangslage zum Konstrukt (im Sinne der realisierten Baute) werden lässt. Im engeren Sinne des Bauens lässt sich Konstruktion als Fügeprozess, als Kombinatorik atmosphärisch wirkender Teile umschreiben. Fügen heisst in der Architektur vor allem Durchdringungen erzeugen. Wenn nun Architektur das Schaffen von Atmosphären ist, dann bedeutet dies, dass die Konstruktion etwas Verbindendes ist. Sie verbindet innere und äussere Atmosphären. An der Durchdringung, das sind sowohl Öffnungen im Sinne von Fenster und Türe wie auch konstruktive Verbindungen von Werkteilen, geschieht die Vermittlung von Atmosphären. Konstruktion ist damit sozusagen der Vermittler von Atmosphären, mit ihr werden atmosphärische Abläufe akzentuiert. Die Erscheinung der Architektur entsteht durch die Verarbeitung und das Fügen von Materialien mit sich selbst oder mit anderen Materialien.

Das gebaute Konstrukt erhält dadurch spürbare Tiefe, darüber wird die atmosphärische Wirkung der Architektur gesteuert.

Machen und Denken

Im Semester werden parallel entwerferische wie theoretische Aspekte behandelt.

Darüber hinaus, respektive in der Wechselwirkung dieser beiden nur scheinbar getrennten Aspekte, soll mit dem experimentellen Machen die inhärente ‹Logik› des Materials erspürt werden. Das Wissen, das aus dem Machen heraus entsteht, wird einem Wissen des Intellektes gegenübergestellt. Zentraler Aspekt bildet dabei die Reflektion der Erkenntnisse und die Rückführung in geistiges wie manuelles Handeln. Thematisch liegt das Augenmerk auf zwei Themenbereichen, die auf unterschiedliche Weise einen Beitrag zur Atmosphäre architektonischer Räume leisten:

LANDSCHAFT & ORT MATERIAL & KONSTRUKTION Der umrissene zentrale Aspekt architektonischen Denkens und Handels sowie die beiden thematischen Schwerpunkte, sollen aus zwei Blickwinkeln systematisch angegangen werden. Dies sind Autor/in und Betrachter/in. Diese zwei Kategorien begleiten die Auseinandersetzung während des Semesters und helfen bei der Strukturierung der Reflektion. Reflektierendes Denken erachten wir als eine wichtige Voraussetzung dafür, den architektonischen Entwurf nachvollziehbar zu machen. Die zwei Ebenen folgendermassen einbringen: Autor/in: Die eigene Person als Autor eines architektonischen Entwurfes bringt eine eigene Selbstbiographie mit. Dieser Begriff ist bewusst gewählt in Anlehnung an den Deutschen Titel des Buches von Aldo Rossi: „wissenschaftliche Selbstbiographie“4. Ein unbedingt lesenswertes Buch, weil es genau diese Ebene der Rolle des eigenen Ichs umschreibt und aufzeigt, wie sich dieses im Entwurf manifestieren kann. Diese Ebene wird vor allem mit dem ersten Text im Buch eingefordert, der eure ureigene Sicht zum Ausdruck bringen soll. Es ist aber auch eine Ebene, die wir von euch bewusst in der Reflektion eurer entwerferischen Schritte dargestellt haben möchten. Das Ich ist der Ausgangspunkt jedes architektonischen

Handels, jeder Interpretation. Das Semester handelt davon, die eigenen atmosphärischen Vorstellungen mit den Werkzeugen architektonischer Darstellung zu transportieren.

Betrachter/in: Betrachter/in meint das Gegenteil, respektive das Ungleiche des Selbst. Für die architektonische Auseinandersetzung könnte dies etwas breiter gefasst werden.

Es umfasst vor allem die diffuse Ebene des Benutzers und des Betrachters. Der Spekulation darüber, wer das heute und in Zukunft ist, der sich mit meinem Werk auseinandersetzt, auseinandersetzen muss und dessen Atmosphäre mit seinen eigenen Sinnen, Erfahrungen und Vorstellungen wahrnimmt.

Geschichten vs. Geschichte Landschaften und Häuser sind lebendig, wenn sie Geschichten erzählen und nicht Geschichte reflektieren! Das Narrative bildet einen möglichen Ausgangspunkt des Spekulativen, d.h. es liefert uns einen roten Faden für die ‹Konstruktion›, dem Akt des geistigen wie physischen Fügens. Der Autor entwirft dabei eine Geschichte, die sich mit der neuen Nutzung und den architektonischen Eingriffen befasst, die er an einem Ort tätigt.

Gegebenerweise wollen wir verstehen, wie die Landschaften und darin die Gebäude entstanden sind, die den Kontext der jeweiligen architektonischen Auseinandersetzung prägen. Dieses Verstehen ist ein analytisches wie ein ästhetisches, eine objektive Betrachtung und eine subjektive Einschätzung. Das heisst, uns interessiert eine umfassende Realität. In diese Realität greift der Autor ein und fügt ein Kapitel zur Geschichte des Ortes hinzu.

Both Peter Zumthor and Juhani Pallasmaa used the term ‘atmosphere’, and Gernot Böhme, who in his philosophy focuses on technology, wrote an illuminating book on the subject: Architektur und Atmosphäre [in English translation: Atmospheric Architectures: The Aesthetics of Felt Spaces ]. Construction is as much an act of thought as it is a physical activity. In architecture it is all too often understood as a technical method that seeks to systematically represent the construction process.

However, construction is in essence the process of bringing together the different aspects, from the programme to topographical data and materials. Accordingly, the design process is a constructive procedure that enables the construction (in the interest of the realised building) to evolve out of a highly complex initial situation with an extremely open outcome. In the narrower sense of building, construction can be understood as the process of joining – of combining parts that have an atmospheric effect. In architecture, joining principally refers to interpenetrations. If, however, architecture is the creation of atmospheres, then construction is something that unites and connects. It interconnects interior and outdoor atmospheres. Interpenetrations are the means of communicating atmospheres, comprising openings such as windows and doors as well as structural elements connecting parts of the whole. Thus construction is, so to speak, an atmospheric agent, it is the means of accentuating atmospheric flows. The appearance of a piece of architecture is the product of the materials used – and how they are finished and combined with the same or other materials. This imbues the built construction with a palpable feeling of depth and controls the atmospheric effect of the architecture.

Making and Thinking

Over the semester we will be concurrently addressing design and theoretical aspects. Additionally, in the interaction of these only seemingly separate aspects, experimental doing will inspire students to intuitively sense the inherent ‘logic’ of the materials. The knowledge arising from doing is compared with intellectual knowledge. In this regard, reflecting on the insights and feeding them back into intellectual and manual action play a key role. The focus is on two thematic fields, each contributing in a different way to the atmosphere of architectonic spaces:

LANDSCAPE & SITE MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION We will be systematically scrutinising the outlined key aspect of architectonic thought and doing – and the two thematic fields – from two perspectives: those of the author and the beholder. These two categories will be the constant companions of our work and research during the semester and will help in structuring reflection. We consider reflective thinking as an important requirement for making a comprehensible architectonic design. Author: The individual person as author of an architectonic design brings along his or her own special autobiography. We have deliberately chosen the term used in the title of Aldo Rossi’s book Scientific Autobiography.

This book is well-worth reading because it describes and shows to what degree the self plays a role, how it becomes manifest in the design. The first text in the book argues especially for this, motivating you to express your own point of view. But it is also an order of things that we want you to consciously represent when reflecting on your designing stages. The self is the starting point for every architectonic project, for every interpretation. The semester addresses how to translate own atmospheric concepts using the tools of architectonic representation.

Beholder: The beholder is the Other or dissimilar to the self. For architectonic research and work this can be interpreted more broadly. Above all it comprises the nebulous level of users and beholders. We will speculate on who this might be now and in the future, those who might be confronted with your work or are interested in it or must come to terms with it and perceive its atmosphere with their own senses, experiences and ideas.

Stories versus History Landscapes and buildings come alive if they tell stories and don’t reflect history.

Narratives provide a possible gateway for the speculative, that is, they provide us with a central idea for the „construction“, the act of mentally and physically joining. Thus the author conceives a story that concentrates on the new use and the architectonic interventions that he or she is putting into effect at a location.

Depending on the given situation, we seek to understand how landscapes and the buildings in them came to be and how they influence the context of each architectonic engagement. Understanding in this way is analytical and aesthetic, an objective view and a subjective assessment. This means we are interested in an all-embracing reality. The author intervenes in this reality and adds another chapter to the history of the site.

In the case of Ballenberg, the question arises as to what extent the story here is a purely intellectual construct, that in reality it strives to combine the stories of different „places“ into one. The challenge that confronts us is complementing the artificial nature of this background with something that cannot reference the fund of its building history.

Basis bildet das Buch Häuser und Landschaften der Schweiz von Richard Weiss5.

Anhand dieser Lektüre soll eine Übersicht über das baukulturelle Erbe der ruralen Bauten der Schweiz geschaffen werden. Gleichzeitig gilt es diese Aspekte in Beziehung zum musealen Charakter des Freilichtmuseums Ballenberg zu setzen.

Das heisst, die spezifischen Merkmale der Einzelbauten und ihr Verhältnis zu ihrer „Heimat“ werden diesem grundlegenden Bezug entzogen und eine „geistige“ Landschaft wird konstruiert. Diese Dualität der Bedeutung soll herausgeschält werden, d.h. die Recherche untersucht weniger die einzelnen Bautypen mit ihrer Geschichte und ihrem kulturellen Kontext, sondern es soll spezifisch herausgearbeitet werden, wo diese Spezifika in eine im Prinzip wesensfremde Beziehung treten. Kann diese Entwurzelung auch als kultureller Transfer gelesen werden, der einen Mehrwert erzeugt? Wie lässt sich damit das Narrativ Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg umschreiben.

Richard Weiss’s book Häuser und Landschaften der Schweiz5 (The houses and landscapes of Switzerland) provides the basis for this topic. It will give you an overview of the heritage of the building culture of the rural architecture in Switzerland. At the same time, it is important to adapt these aspects to the museum character of the Ballenberg open-air museum. This means that the specific characteristics of the individual buildings and their relationship to their „native home“ will not be taken into account in our radical approach, and we will be constructing an „intellectual“ landscape. The duality of meaning will be sifted out, that is, instead of giving prominence to the individual types of buildings with their individual histories and cultural contexts, our research focuses on pinpointing where these specifics basically enter into a relationship that is completely alien. Can this kind of uprooting also be understood as cultural transfer that produces additional value? How can we rewrite the narrative of the Ballenberg open-air museum?

Entwicklung Systembau „Ballenberg“ Developing the „Ballenberg“ Building System

Die neuen Bausysteme sollen geeignet sein für eine Umsetzung durch die kleinere Baubetriebe der Region. Dabei sind insbesondere Holzbaubetriebe dort heimisch aber auch kleinere Baufirmen im Hochbau. Dies soll aber möglichst umfassen mit der Integration der Handwerksbetriebe des Museums und allfälliger Mitarbeit von Laien als Bestandteil des Angebotes des Freilichtmuseums Ballenberg konzipiert werden.

Ziel der Projektaufgabe ist die Entwicklung eines Bausystem „Ballenberg“.

Dieses System soll geeignet sein unterschiedliche Bautypen für verschiedene Nutzungen in einer gestalterisch zusammenhängende Gesamterscheinung abzubilden. Diese Bauten sollen in Zukunft die baukulturelle Qualität der Ausstellungsbauten in zeitgemässer Form aufnehmen, gleichzeitig aber formal nicht aufdringlich diese Ausstellungsbauten bedrängen. Grundsätzlich soll die Entwicklung dieses Bausystems auf der in den Ausstellungsbauten vertretenen Bautradition der Schweiz Bezug nehmen, gleichzeitig aber auf die neusten Entwicklungen im Baubereich eingehen. Gegebenerweise kommt der Holzbau eine tragende Rolle zu, jedoch sind andere traditionelle wie auch neue Baumaterialien immer auch in Betracht zu ziehen.

Es soll ein Bausystem entwickelt werden, das die am Ballenberg vorhandenen Ressourcen, personelle wie infrastrukturelle, massgebende in eine umfassende Gesamtbetrachtung miteinbezieht.

Paralell zur Semesterarbeit der Studierenden entwickelt das Lehrteam eine Skizze für einen Masterplan für die museumsdienenden Bauten auf dem Areal. Daraus werden Erkenntnisse genieriert die für die Projektarbeit der Studierenden relevant sind, z.B. Fragen der Einbettung in die Topografie, die Breite an funktionalen Anforderungen, Verhältnis zu Bestandsbauten – Solitärbau oder Anbau usw.

Die Vorstellungen werden periodisch mit den Studierenden diskutiert und in der Folge weiter verfeinert. Am Ende soll neben den Entwürfen der Studierenden ein solcher Masterplan der Verantwortlichen des Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg präsentiert werden.

The smaller regional construction companies must be able to work with the new building systems. Especially timber construction builders can be found in the region as well as smaller high-rise construction enterprises. However, this should all be conceived as comprehensively as possible by integrating the museum’s craft workshops and the possible participation of laymen as part of the programme offered by the Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg.

The goal of the project task is to develop a „Ballenberg“ building system. This system must be suited for the various types of buildings for different uses and should harmonise with the overall appearance of the museum complex. In the future, these buildings shall assimilate in contemporary form the cultural building quality of the exhibition buildings. While striving to achieve this, they must be neither intrusive nor overpower them. Essentially the design and development of this building system should refer to the building tradition in Switzerland that we find represented in the exhibition buildings while simultaneously exploring the most recent developments in the building industry. Timber construction plays a leading role, but other traditional as well as new building materials should always be considered too.

We will be designing and developing a building system that effectively incorporates Ballenberg’s existing resources – its human resources as well as infrastructure – in a comprehensive overall analysis.

Parallel to the students’ seminar work and research, the team of teachers will be drafting a sketch for a master plan for the facility buildings of the museum complex. This generates insights that are relevant to the project work of the students, e.g., questions concerning the topographic embeddedness, the range of functional demands, the relationship to the existing buildings – solitary or annex buildings etc.

The teachers will periodically discuss their ideas with the students and subsequently further refine them. At the end, besides the designs by the students, we will be presenting such a master plan to those responsible at the Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg.

Den Vertiefungsthemen des Masters an Architektur der Hochschule Luzern – Technik & Architektur folgend, soll die Interaktion von Material, Struktur und Energie zu einem integralen Entwurf zusammengeführt werden. Somit sind in der Thesis ganz konkret entwerferische Aussagen zum Umgang / Anwendung der Materialien, zu strukturellen Überlegungen vom Raum bis zur Tragstruktur und zu den heute relevanten Themen des Umgangs mit dem Aspekt der Energie, wie Komfort, Suffizienz u.a.m. gefordert. Diese Aussagen sollen aber nicht als autonome Aspekte behandelt werden, sondern in Bezug auf die Wechselwirkung aufeinander abgestimmt sein und auf allen Massstabsebenen in die Projektierung miteinbezogen sein. Accompanied by the topic of the task of the semester focus „Architecture & Material“, the thesis of the autumn semester 2019 deals with the task of a new collection depot for the Open Air Museum of Switzerland in Ballenberg. The concrete design debate will be explained by the thesis lecturers at the beginning of the semester.

Following the in-depth study of the Master in Architecture at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts - Technology & Architecture, the interaction of material, structure and energy is to be brought together into an integral design.

Thus, the thesis demands very concrete design statements on the handling and application of materials, on structural considerations from space to supporting structure and on today‘s relevant topics of handling the aspect of energy, such as comfort, sufficiency and much more. However, these statements should not be treated as autonomous aspects, but should be coordinated with each other with regard to the interaction and included in the project planning at all scale levels.

The aim remains a coherent and high-quality design, the relevance of which should be proven by the above discussion.

Die Grundlage für die Aufgabe bilden die in den Vertiefungsarbeiten des Masterkurses erlernten Methoden und das dabei erworbene historische und theoretische Wissen. Die Argumentation erfolgt auf nachvollziehbare Art und Weise und soll den im Projekt entwickelten Gedankengang mit bereits vorhandenem Wissen unterlegen.

Das Thesisbuch unterscheidet sich vom Prozessbuch indem es eine These mit dem eigenen Entwurf verwebt. Neben der Erläuterung des architektonischen Projektes tragen Aussagen zu den Themen Material, Struktur und Energie zu einer vertieften Beschäftigung mit diesen Themen bei. Das Thesisbuch stellt in Ergänzung zur Projektabgabe ein eigenständiges Gefäss dar und synthetisiert das nutzbar gemachte theoretische Wissen mit der im Studium erworbenen entwerferischen Kompetenz.

9 ECTS With their thesis book, the students are writing the conclusion of their studies at the HSLU T&A: a writtten work that demonstrates their theoretical interests as well as their stance as designing architects. This is done by means of a well substantiated and developed thesis on the basis of a questionnaire and the application of existing theories and research. Combining the theoretical foundation and the student’s own design practice results in intersections and insights that enable the students to reflect on their own actions.

The assignment is based on the methods learned in-depth studies of the master’s course and the historical and theoretical knowledge acquired from them. The argumentation proceeds in an intelligible way and should use existing knowledge to substantiate the line of thought laid out in the project.

The thesis book differs from the process book in that it interweaves a thesis with an original design. In addition to explaining the architectural project, statements on the themes, materials, structure, and energy contribute to a deeper engagement with these themes. The thesis book represents an autonomous repository and synthesises the theoretical knowledge that has been made useful with the design competence acquired during studies.

Die Erfindung der Stadt

In der Geschichte gilt die Erfindung der Stadt unabhängig vom Kulturkreis und der Zeit immer als Sinnbild für einen Meilenstein gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung. Erst durch die Konzentration von Bauten innerhalb eines politisch und ökonomisch determinierten Rahmens sind Formen des Zusammenlebens entstanden, die eine gewisse soziale und räumliche Komplexität aufweisen. Jede Form einer städtischen Siedlung ist dabei gekennzeichnet durch die ökonomischen und politischen Vorstellungen der Erbauer. Unabhängig davon, ob es sich um eine mittelalterliche Handwerkerstadt, eine Residenzstadt oder eine Stadtgründung der Moderne handelt, die jeweiligen Wertvorstellungen manifestieren sich in der Art

und Weise der räumlichen Anordnung, der funktionalen Gliederung und der architektonischen Ausformulierung. Die Disziplin Städtebau ist daher vielfach geprägt durch idealtypische Konzeptionen, die sinnbildlich für eine Vorstellung des menschlichen Zusammenlebens stehen. Im Lauf der Jahrhunderte entsteht durch Überschreibungen, Ergänzungen und Rückbau schrittweise eine städtische Realität, in der unterschiedliche Epochen und Wertvorstellungen unvermittelt kollidieren – man denke beispielsweise an moderne Eingriffe in mittelalterliche Städte – oder sich einzelne Ensembles zu einem komplexen Ganzen formen. Diese hier genannten Aspekte finden sich in vielen europäischen Städten und tragen damit auch zu deren Vielfalt und Qualität bei.

Um an einem konkreten und vielschichtigen Beispiel städtebauliche Entwicklungsschritte vertieft untersuchen zu können, werden wir in diesem Semester den Fokus auf Winterthur legen. Anhand dieses Beispiels möchten wir einige der relevanten historischen städtebaulichen Konzeptionen erfassen und deren Prägung und Relevanz für den Stadtkörper untersuchen. Wir erhoffen uns dabei, dass wir ausgehend vom konkreten Fall, allgemeingültige Prinzipien städtischer Planungen besser im jeweiligen historischen Kontext verorten können und deren Bedeutung für die Entwicklungen im Städtebau besser verstehen.

The invention of the city

In history, the invention of the city independently of the cultural sphere and the era has always been regarded as the epitome of a milestone in social development. Only the concentration of buildings within a politically and economically determined framework results in forms of coexistence that feature a certain social and spatial complexity. Every form of urban settlement is therefore marked by the economic and political ideas of its builders. No matter whether it is a medieval city of artisans, a royal seat, or the founding of a modern city, the values in question are manifested in the way the space is ordered, subdivided according to function and formulated architecturally. The discipline of urban planning is therefore marked in many ways by idealistic concepts that stand for an idea of human coexistence. Over the course of centuries, by means of overwriting, supplementing and tearing down, an urban reality is gradually formed in which different epochs and values abruptly collide – one need only think of modern interventions in medieval cities – or form a complex whole from individual ensembles. The aspects mentioned here are found in many European cities and thus also contribute to their diversity and quality.

In order to study in depth a specific and multi-layered example of the stages of urban-planning development, this semester we will focus on Winterthur. Using this example, we will document several of the relevant historical urban-planning concepts and study their influence on and relevance to the urban body. We hope that we can start out from a specific case in order to better localise universally valid principles of urban planning in the specific historical concept and understand their significance to developments in urban planning.

Positionen zur Stadt – Winterthur

Ein erster Fokus liegt dabei auf der Industriearchitektur des 19. Jahrhunderts, welche sich durch die ortsansässigen Firmen Sulzer und Rieter nicht nur in grossmasstäblichen Industriehallen, sondern auch in Wohnsiedlungen für Arbeiterfamilien – wie beispielsweise die Rietersiedlung in Winterthur Töss (1865) – baulich zeigen. Diese, in beiden Fällen durch die Industriellen erstellt, zeigen neben der ökonomischen und funktionalen Realität industrieller Tätigkeit auch den Anspruch, für die Angestellten adäquaten Wohn- und Lebensraum zur Verfügung zu stellen. Für diese Planungen bildeten die Arbeitersiedlungen in England und Frankreich – wie beispielswiese die Cité Ouvrière in Mulhouse – wichtige Vorbilder.

Quasi als Kontrast zu den dichten Arbeitersiedlungen entstand ebenfalls in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts im Gebiet Inneres Lind, angrenzend an den mittelalterlichen Stadtkern, ein Villenquartier, das zusammen mit Monumentalbauten wie dem Stadthaus (1865-69) von Gottfried Semper und anderen die Prägungen eines spätklassizistischen bzw. historistischen Städtebaus aufweist.

Der Bedarf an preisgünstigen Wohnungen blieb auch zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ein wesentlicher Treiber der Stadtentwicklung. Dies wurde noch verstärkt durch eine Wohnbaukrise um 1910, die weite Teile der Bevölkerung betraf und von der Stadt eine aktive Wohnbaupolitik verlangte. Die Neuplanungen am Stadtrand dieser Zeit, wie die Siedlungen am Brühlberg und im Gebiet Breite-Vogelsang waren getragen von der Gartenstadtidee wie sie Ebenezer Howard oder Raymond Unwin in England entwickelt hatten und bildete den Auftakt zu einer Reihe von grösseren Wohnsiedlungen von Architekten wie Franz Scheibler, Adolf Kellermüller; Hans Bernoulli, die sie in diesem Geiste errichteten. Hermann Siegrists Siedlung Leimenegg (1932) war dann bereits von den Idealen des aufkommenden Neuen Bauens geprägt. Als wichtiges Beispiel für die städtebaulichen Ideale nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg zeigt die Siedlung Grüzefeld (1965-67) von Cramer, Jaray, Paillard und Leemann eine freie Anordnung im Raum, die in ihrer architektonischen Ausprägung von der Logik serieller Fertigung dominiert wird. Sie steht für eine weitere Phase städtischer Erweiterungsschritte die bis heute – man denke an die Planungen im Gebiet Winterthur-Hegi – den Stadtkörper ergänzen und durch ihrer Grossmasstäblichkeit auch prägen.

Während die Stadt am Rand immer noch wächst, findet in deren Kern durch die Deindustrialisierung seit den 1990er-Jahren eine Transformation statt. Die Aneignung ehemals geschlossener Industrieareale und deren Umnutzung in Wohn- und Bildungsquartiere im Gebiet des Sulzerareals in Winterthur-Töss zeigt exemplarisch, dass eine Stadt bei aller Permanenz auch dynamischen Veränderungen unterworfen ist.

Positions on the City - Winterthur

The first focus is on the industrial architecture of the nineteenth century, which can be seen in the architecture by the local firms Sulzer and Rieter not only in large-scale industrial buildings but also in housing estates for workers’ families, such as the Rieter housing estate in the Töss district of Winterthur (1865). Built by industrialists in both cases, they reveal not only the economic and functional reality of industrial activity but also the ambition to make adequate housing and living space available to employees. English and French housing estates for workers, such as the Cité Ouvrière in Mulhouse, were important models for these plans.

As a kind of contrast to these dense housing estates for workers, a villa district was also built in the second half of the nineteenth century in Inneres Lind, an area adjacent to the medieval city centre; together with monumental buildings such as the town hall (1865–69) by Gottfried Semper and others, it reveals the influences of late neoclassical and historicist urban planning.

The need for affordable housing continued to be a crucial driving force of urban development at the beginning of the twentieth century. This was only reinforced by a housing construction crisis around 1910 that affected broad swaths of the population and forced the city to come up with an active housing construction policy. The new buildings planned on the outskirts of the city at the time, such as the housing estates at the foot of the Brühlberg and in Breite-Vogelsang were the result of the garden-city idea as it had been developed by Ebenezer Howard and Raymond Unwin in England and marked the beginning of a series of larger housing estates built in this spirit by architects such as Franz Scheibler, Adolf Kellermüller and Hans Bernoulli. Hermann Siegrist’s Leimenegg housing estate (1932) was already influenced by the ideas of the emerging Neues Bauen (New Building) movement. As an important example of the urban planning ideals after the Second World War, the Grüzefeld housing estate (1965–67) by Cramer, Jaray, Paillard and Leemann features a free arrangement dominated architectonically by the logic of industrial manufacturing. It stands for another phase in the stages of urban expansion that even today – one need only think of the planning in the Hegi district of Winterthur – supplement the urban body and also influence it with their large scale.

While the city continues to grow on its outskirts, a transformation has been taking place at its centre as a result of deindustrialisation since the 1990s. The appropriation of formerly closed-off industrial areas and their use as neighbourhoods for housing and education in the vicinity of the Sulzerareal in WinterthurTöss exemplifies how a city is subjected to dynamic changes despite all the permanence.

Wir versuchen die gewählten Beispiele nicht nur als historische Phänomene zu verstehen und sie in der jeweiligen städtebaulichen Debatte zu verorten. Vielmehr sind wir daran interessiert, die unterschiedlichen Positionen miteinander zu vergleichen und so räumliche und soziale Qualitäten besser benennen zu können.

Unter der Prämisse, dass Städtebau immer auch ein Abbild gesellschaftlicher Modelle ist, liefert die Analyse auch eine Abbild der Entwicklung Winterthurs von der industriellen zur postindustriellen Stadt.

Die Konzeption des Moduls ist getragen von der Überzeugung, dass entwerfende Architekten und Architektinnen in der Beschäftigung mit der beruflichen Praxis und Theorie von grundlegenden Phänomenen der Architektur wie auch von den konkreten Bedingungen und Themen beeinflusst werden, die innerhalb des Fachdiskurses geführt werden. Deshalb bietet die Auseinandersetzung mit der Architekturgeschichte und ihren Planungen, Bauten und Protagonisten ein relevantes Feld, um die eigene entwerferische Tätigkeit zu reflektieren, und innerhalb des historischen Kontextes zu verorten.

We are not just trying to understand the examples selected as historical phenomena and locate them within the urban-planning debate of the time. Rather, we are interested in comparing the various positions with one another in order to better identify spatial and social qualities. Under the premise that urban planning always reflects social models as well, our analysis will also offer a picture of Winterthur’s evolution from an industrial city to a post-industrial one.

The concept of this module is supported by the conviction that designing architects are influenced in their work with the theory and practice of the profession both by fundamental phenomena of architecture and by the specific conditions and themes of the discourse on the discipline. For that reason, coming to terms with the history of architecture and its plans, buildings and protagonists is a relevant field for reflecting on one’s own design activity and placing it in the historical context.

Semesterstruktur Semester Structure

Das Semester wird in drei Abschnitte gegliedert: Zunächst erarbeiten wir uns mittels Lektüre und gemeinsamer Diskussion von Texten verschiedener Autoren, Exkursionen nach Winterthur und Inputreferaten einen Überblick sowie ein Vokabular, um das Thema zu verstehen, einzugrenzen, und für unsere eigene Argumentation nutzbar zu machen. Im Anschluss daran dient dieses Wissen als Grundlage für die eigenständige, schriftliche Auseinandersetzung mit einem selbst gewählten Aspekt zum Thema, das in Form eines Vortrages präsentiert wird. In der dritten Phase werden die formulierten Thesen weiter verfeinert und als umfangreiche Textarbeit in eine verbindliche Form gebracht.

The semester is divided into three sections: Firstly, we will prepare by reading and jointly discussing texts by various authors; the excursion to Winterthur and input presentations will offer an overview as well as a vocabulary that will help us to map out and understand the theme and make it useful for our own argumentation. Next, this knowledge will provide the foundation for the students’ own efforts to come to terms in writing with an aspect of the theme that they are free to choose and to present their ideas in the form of a lecture. In the third phase, the theses that have been formulated will be refined and put into final form in a substantial written work.

Each building, even the most innovative, is realized as an overlay to a place, an adaptation of a topography, a transformation of an existing spatiality, a result of cultural influences. Architectures are always made as additions to something, the tabula rasa remains a fascinating metaphor. Architects intervene in given situations, necessity has been accompanied by geography and meanings. Since their beginning, the history and theory of architecture have been travelled and inhabited by buildings that have come down to us only because they were continually changed, transformed and lived: the theatre of Marcellus in Rome changed into a home over centuries, the temple of Athena in Syracuse mutated into a cathedral, and many medieval, Renaissance and Baroque buildings now house schools, offices, museums. Architectural results are alive and not concluded once and for all but available and renewable. The same happens for reasons, beliefs and hopes beyond them.

This course is devoted to the understanding of specificities and influences between individual poetics, collective structures, and given places, applying theories and critical interpretations as design tools, encouraging students to be able to think along and across tendencies, trends and events, positioning themselves as conscious architects in today’s society. The themes and ideas presented through texts, examples and excursions are understood as tools in the hands of architects.

The architectural theories are not pure abstractions; they move between absolute positions and relative relations.

Landscapes can be captured and visualised using various scales and perspectives.

During this semester, we will look into six different approaches to cultivating landscapes – landscapes that are actively shaped by mankind – whether idealised images or hard-core infrastructural interventions in our living environment.

All of those landscapes will be situated in different geographical contexts – such as the urban, rural, peripheric and the local and global contexts.

Understanding landscapes as a metabolism between nature, society and technology, where the ideal image of a landscape does not necessarily correspond to the reality, we will look at methodologies and strategies of how to approach, see, plan and experience landscapes, even idealise and politicise landscapes and eventually visualise landscapes.

The study trip South Africa takes us to the antithetic cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town.The overarching theme is the formal and the informal city and its buildings and infrastructures during and after Apartheid. The question of interest is how architecture can offer added value to the heterogeneous populations in the opposing parts of the city.

We will gain insights in the dynamic architectural discourse of South Africa, visiting buildings of Noero Architects, Peter Rich, Wolff Architects and others. We will learn about the history of the formal urban environment in a context of societal upheaval and explore the contemporary informal face of South Africa’s townships. We will be guided by South African architects and academics and seek the exchange with local architecture students.

The study trip is open to all students in the Master’s programme. A detailed schedule and costs will be announced at registration at the beginning of the semester.

The study trip of the Material focus takes us through the tripoint of Switzerland, France, and Germany. On this trip, we will encounter architecture that addresses the topics of system construction, craft treatments and vernacular architecture.

The trip will take us from Murten/Morat by way of the Jura Mountains to France, where we will visit the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans and Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp. As the trip continues, we will compare the historical half-timber buildings in Colmar to the historical buildings on the southern end of the Upper Rhine. The trip concludes with a visit to the Vitra Museum in Weil am Rhein and a walk to Riehen. Detailed information will be announced at registration at the beginning of the semester.

For our international students who are new in the masters program - and for anyone else interested - we offer this opportunitiy to get to know some of the arcitectural and graphical basics that will be required in the masters course.

The team of the four assistants will introduce you to some of the standards that are needed later on in the course. Each of the assistants will then be your contact concerning the presented topic during the whole semester.

Every lecture will consist of the following parts: Introductory lecture as a theoretical basis for common understanding Hands-on examples of former semester works, visits of concerned facilitiesand introductions of responsible people Discussion of the presented theory and the sighted examples and facilities Literature recommendations
