UP MANILA AS NATIONAL UNIVERSITY
The University of the Philippines is the National University of the Philippines under Republic Act 9500 enacted on April 29, 2008. The University of the Philippines Manila (UP Manila) is the birthplace and cradle of the University of the Philippines System.
The Health Sciences Center (HSC) created in 1977 is the precursor of UP Manila that brought together all the health colleges and units in UP to ensure the highest standards of training and research. HSC was renamed UP Manila in 1982.
Harnesses the expertise of its faculty, staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders to assess the nation’s health and contribute to the fulfillment of national health goals. Constantly reviews its curricular offerings to enhance their relevance to national needs and ensure high standards of excellence.
Contributes to national health policy formulation and program planning through stakeholder consultations, reviews and professional advice, discussion of proposed themes and issues for legislation; and high impact researches.

UP Manila educates the best and the brightest students in the health and allied professions. Its graduates top licensure examinations and clinch majority of the top 10/20 places.

RESEARCH
UP Manila produces high impact researches and capability building programs on aging, maternal and child health, herbal medicine, human genetics, molecular biology and biotechnology, clinical epidemiology, pharmaceutical sciences, newborn screening for genetic and hearing disorders, vision disorders, oral health, and telehealth.
Researches on newborn hearing screening that served as basis for the enactment of Republic Act 9709 or the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Intervention Act of 2009.
Republic Act 10747 or the Rare Diseases Act of the Philippines enacted in March 2016.
Studies on vision screening among Filipino kindergarten pupils and premature newborns to detect vision loss and determine timely and appropriate interventions that serve as basis for the ongoing legislation on mandatory vision screening among all school children (House Bill 6441 and Senate Bill 2948).

RESEARCH UP Manila brings the best of science and technology to benefit the greatest number of Filipinos. During the past decades, UP Manila’s researches in a wide array of health disciplines have led to significant advances that contributed to better health.
The University ensures that its faculty, staff, and students engage in research as a tool for health reforms, to enhance education, and strengthen its public service role.
The research program on medicinal plants saw the commercialization of lagundi and sambong as common ailments for Filipinos. Studies on liver diseases led to the mandatory mass vaccination of newborns against Hepatitis B. Studies on newborn screening spurred the enactment of Republic Act 9288 or the Newborn Screening Act of 2004 that stipulates screening of all Filipino newborns to safeguard them from mental retardation, death, and other harmful effects of genetic and metabolic disorders.
