ractically everyone who has been to our cover feature, Batanes would always have something nice to say. Rugged, wind swept, unspoiled, and isolated, it is invariably described as the best place to get away from it all. My former Managing Editor, Lynette Lee Corporal who wrote the Batanes feature is always looking for an excuse to visit. A young Filipino executive who has traveled many parts of the world said that the best San Miguel beer he ever drank was on top of a hill in Batanes while just gazing at the horizon.

My friend Manny Baldemor, who is popularly known as the UNICEF artist just came from Batanes where he conducted an art workshop for 150 students together with fellow artist Victoria Abad Kerblat. Some even braved a three-hour boat journey just to attend. What a complete and fulfilling life Manny leads. He went to Batanes to share his artistic knowledge for free and at the ART FOR ALL: manny baldemor and the same time, he was able to paint locals of batanes engage in a critique session and had an exhibit that did well. after his art lesson. In Batanes, Manny observed that “their life is simple and the people are as distinctive as they are courteous. Children would still kiss the hands of a stranger as a sign of respect. Everything is enchanting and magical.” He is grateful that PAL now has regular flights to Batanes and noted that the flight he took was full.

HANDS OF AN ARTIST: not many people know that bien bautista was a painter first before becoming a photographer.

We are continuing our regular series on photography and this time, we are presenting a feature on architecture photography by Bien Bautista. A multi-awarded photographer, Bien talks about looking at structures in a wider perspective while being sensitive to the little details that give object’s a unique character. If you shift the conversation to Batanes and ask Bien if he is willing to go to back again, he would probably give the same answer as Manny and Lynette: any time.

The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs announced last April that nationals from Belize, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan may enter the country visa-free for 30 days. Correspondingly, Japan is also expected to scrap visa requirements for Filipinos.

London-based education and career network Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) lists five PH universities in Asia’s 300 Best. The University of the Philippines, Diliman is ranked 63 followed by Ateneo de Manila (115) and University of Sto. Tomas (141). De La Salle University is in the 151-160 range while Ateneo de Davao University was included in the 251-300 bracket for the first time.

Philippines’ Credit Rating Upgraded International credit-rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) has upgraded the country’s investment grade rating to BBB. It is the highest classification ever given to the country. Among the countries which have the same credit rating as the Philippines are Bahrain, Colombia, Italy, and South Africa.

Annelies “Anne” Frank, one of the most prominent icons of World War II history, was born in Frankfurt, Germany. During the War, the Frank family escaped to Amsterdam but were betrayed and sent to concentration camps where Anne died of typhus. Anne gained fame posthumously after her wartime diary was published through the efforts of her father, Otto Frank.

Sounds were initially recorded on a phonograph cylinder with tinfoil wrapped around it. Emile Berliner would later move away from using cylinders and introduced gramophone records, flat doublesided discs with grooves along its surface.

1954 PortabLe transistor radio The portable radio receiver revolutionized music as people were able to listen to music anywhere. Listeners could also access news programs on a different radio frequency.

Frenchman ÉdouardLeon Scott de Martinville created a barrel-like machine that could record sound. Originally built to aid researchers studying the science of acoustics, they realized they could recreate the sound being recorded by the device. Unfortunately, the phonautograph was only capable of recording sound and not playing it back.

The first gramophone records could only store under five minutes of recordings, but by 1931, the RCA Victor company was working on a longplaying (LP) record that could play back music for a total of 20 minutes. The discs were made out of vinyl plastic because of the material’s ability to dispel surface noise; it was also favored for its durability. Sound engineers also worked hard to perfect sound reproduction, coming up with the term “high fidelity” (Hi-Fi) to describe superior sound quality.

During the MP3’s proliferation and the influx of digital music players, file formats were widely different. Apple’s Steve Jobs, a music lover, sought to unify the music and the player. A portable hard disk that could store thousands of songs was then created—what we lovingly know today as the iPod. The music industry could then sell their tracks in a standard digital format through the online music store, iTunes.

Vinyl records are making a huge comeback. Many hardcore audiophiles still love the rich sound a vinyl record can produce, especially when paired with specialized equipment like vacuum tube amplifiers. he aroma is tantalizing—laden with rich earthy tones and the trace of a floral bouquet. I am ingesting the scent of Ethiopian coffee beans while deciding which single-origin drip coffee to try at Afters Espresso & Desserts. The Kenyan coffee cherries give off fruity notes (hint of lemon, perhaps), while the Brazilian beans have a nutty fragrance. I select the Yirgacheffe, whose beans are hand-picked by coffee growers on a mountain farm in Ethiopia. I don’t know them, but I know they’re doing something right. The Yirgacheffe is exquisite, with a delicate piquancy reminiscent of tea. Yet it’s not solely about the brew—the way they serve the coffee is significant. A cup is heated and a filter affixed on top. Coffee is decanted and left to drip. This is repeated, and the filter removed. The result is black and pure, without sugar or cream. Simple preparation, but elegant. Such attention to a process is what sets apart artisanal cafés from coffee chains. All too often, we are only aware of the contents of our cups. But there’s a backstory to the espresso we quaff, and it matters. A devotion for process fuels the minds

Yardstick’s owners exhibit a playfulness coupled with a serious devotion to the art of the brew. As co-owner André Chanco explains, the café space is designed to be transparent to allow customers to oversee every step that goes into fulfilling the order. I observe Eric, their barista, as he goes about the grinding and cupping of their Project Y roast. His craft is on display as much as the La Marzocco espresso maker he’s using. A grinder purrs. The ground coffee is then tested between the barista’s fingers. The feel of the grains tell him whether the grind went well, Eric says. The grains enter the machine. Espresso flows into a demitasse (a small cup). Eric tastes it, declares the acidity oversharp. Back to the grinder, starting from the top. As he works, Eric informs me that minute differences in the amount and temperature of the water affect flavor. Timing is critical in concocting espresso. Eric performs the sequence thrice before getting a satisfactory brew. A sip of the espresso reveals it is a tad acidic—or bright, as tasters say—in an

intriguing, pinpricky way. The espresso is tasty, yet I must admit I don’t quite “get” it—like my countrymen, I have an affinity for simple, bold roasts. But now I know why they say that artisanal coffee is like wine. It is a drink for connoisseurs, an experience as much as it is a beverage. It’s some jazzy brew cooked up by Miles Davis, and I’d only ever listened to Limp Bizkit. Yardstick’s café is actually a showroom—for coffee machines, roasts, and workshops. More than that, it’s selling a new kind of coffee culture. The Third Wave Coffee Movement is an alternative to the retail-driven, one-size-fits-all approach. But appreciation of coffee is based on subjective feeling, André emphasizes. One espresso from one roast can provoke different responses from different people. Every Third Wave coffeeshop has its own personality, I’ve found. Yardstick Coffee, with their relentless pursuit of the “perfect” espresso, resemble artists honing a high level of talent. Craft Coffee Revolution feels like a craftsman’s workshop upjumped to bar, which is kind of what happened. Commune seeks to reinvent the Parisian-style community café for the iPod Generation.

Afters Espresso & Desserts’ chocolatey interior suits its dessert café status. Its owner, Vincent Fideles, chatters with an endearingly geeky obsessiveness about his culinary formulations. Vincent originally had in mind a gelato shop, and he made me taste a scoop of Belgian chocolate. It has a custard-like consistency that’s a lovely sensation on the tongue, coupled with an intensely rich cacao flavor. I suggest you try their Affogato, a shot of warm espresso that you pour over a serving of Stracciatella (milk gelato). Craft Coffee Revolution began as a roasting facility, but word-of-mouth brought people knocking, and now it’s a cozy tasting bar. They still roast the coffee themselves. You’ll even see their machine standing by the entrance. Craft offers an impressive variety of roasts, largely using South and Central American beans, though they carry African and Asian stock as well. I try their brew of the week, Ethiopia Konga which is served black, detecting hints of citrus and cherry in it. Commune sources all its coffee from local farms. Their single-origin roasts include Mount Matutum, Mount Kitanglad, and Sagada. It was envisioned by proprietor Ros Juan as a place where people congregate out of a love for both coffee and community. Besides being sociably oriented, Ros is socially conscious, with a concern over the plight of Philippine

coffee farmers. She elaborates on the hardship inherent in coffee picking—for one thing, beans can only be plucked by hand, as they don’t all ripen at once. It’s painstaking. But that’s how you get great coffee. And you can get it in a cocktail here. Or does a refreshing, cold-brewed Iced Toddy sound tempting to you? Coffee goes well with the first meal of the day, and here you can order a Filipino breakfast staple, tapsilog. Very appetizing. Commune places quite an emphasis on food, offering entrées such as chicken adobo and grilled bangus (milkfish). Round it out with dessert—slice of apple pie, perhaps? n

This exquisite new collection from H.Stern takes us on a ride through the endless curves created by one of the shapers of modern architecture.

efore we see architectural landmarks take shape, they were once merely visions on the mind or images on a paper. For Oscar Niemeyer (1907 - 2012), one of the brilliant minds who helped shape modern architecture, the creation of a design is simply magical. He once remarked, “Oh, how magic it is to see the birth of a palace, a museum, a fine figure of a woman on the white sheet of paper! How I desire and

like drawing them! How I feel them in the curves of my architecture!” As Brazil’s most famous architect, Niemeyer’s works have been immortalized by H.Stern. What used to be largescale icons are now exquisite pieces of embellishment. Now, the collection features additional pieces through the endless lines of life. The new pieces of jewellery have been inspired by Niemeyer’s drawings and approved personally by him, in the last year of his life. It follows the inspiration concept of the first version: the unique, simple, and natural outlines of the architect, who was, first and foremost, a gifted designer. Sinuous contours, light and continuous lines that seem to lead to infinity can be seen in a new selection of rings, earrings, and pendants. The minimalism and lightness, molded in yellow or white gold with diamonds, are common features to all the designs, which were inspired by iconic architectural projects or unknown doodles—all with the invaluable signature of Niemeyer. FLOWER Niemeyer’s work also includes sketches of singular beauty, like one of a hand holding a flower with four leaves. This drawing provided the inspiration

for new rings in 18K yellow gold and 18K white gold with diamonds, a pendant, and two pairs of earrings. MONUMENT The Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo, projected by Niemeyer in 1954 to celebrate the city’s 400th anniversary, integrates a rare green beauty to his architectural design, with buildings such as the Oca, the Bienal, and the beautiful Ibirapuera Auditorium. The park design sculpture made by Niemeyer was provided with a central stem that was surrounded by a spiral around it. This work was the inspiration for the creation of two pairs of earrings made in its image and likeness, of 18K yellow gold or white gold with diamonds. COPAN One of the icons of the famous concrete poetry of São Paulo, the Copan building has hovered like a wave on the horizon of the metropolis since the 1950s, contrasting with the straight angles that predominate in the local architecture. It was the wavy, striking design of this Niemeyersignature building that was the inspiration behind the new Copan ring now presented in wavy forms made of 18K white gold with diamonds. n H.Stern is available only at Adora, Greenbelt 5, Makati City.

t’s a quiet Sunday afternoon. Suddenly, a deafening sound fills the air. Three small bells are being rung, perhaps with too much gusto, by college students Ingrid, Sol, and Catchel. My first thought is to get them to stop— but my irritation quickly turns to fascination. Why did those little bells sound so loud? This is the Manila for A Day (M4AD) tour of Intramuros, and we’re at the escalera principal or main staircase of the San Agustin

Now, this is how history should be taught in school, instead of the dull, mechanical memorizing of dates and names so many of us had to endure. M4AD promises a “super fun time-traveling experience,” and that is exactly what it delivers. Dustin doesn’t just point out tourist spots but takes you into the past through sight, sounds, smell, touch, and taste. “You can just smell the cholera,” Ingrid notes, after his particularly vivid description of sea travel during the Spanish period. Dustin, a graduate of the Department of Tourism’s Mabuhay Guides program in 2009, is M4AD’s lead history weaver. It’s an apt title; he weaves such compelling stories of the past, it’s as if he actually lived them. His stories are grounded in fact (“Half of my time is spent making sure that everything I say in the tour is academically citable,” he says), but he tells them with humor and wit. What sets M4AD tour apart is its mix of history with anthropology, art studies and some sociology thrown in. There will be oohs, aahs, and aha moments when you realize, with Dustin’s prodding, what’s so remarkable about a statue, chair, or piece of décor. The tour gives context—shows why things were the way they were in those days, and how they got that way. Dustin says the aim of the M4AD tour is to teach you how to look. “You could walk into Casa Manila on your own, and you’d be in and out in 10 minutes. What would your take-away be? I want anyone who joins the tour—the whole Philippine nation, if possible—to think beyond where we are right now. And the way we’re going to do that is by looking at our past.” n

One never really forgets Batanes. It draws those who need to get away from it all— the crowd, pollution, traffic, noise—and here they find their own personal sanctuary. A great wedding venue is the Mount Carmel Chapel, located atop a small hill overlooking the sea. Pacita Abad: Ivatan Artist The late Pacita Abad is an internationally acclaimed artist whose more than 30-year painting career produced 3,500 artworks and over 40 solo exhibits, including her famous painting, the 55-meter long and 35-meter wide “Singapore Art Bridge.” She died in 2004 at age 58 after a three-year battle with lung cancer.

any tourists have swam in the waters of Saud Beach in Pagudpud, visited the UNESCO-listed Paoay Church, and taken a jump shot at the Bangui Windmills. But Ilocos Norte has something new that beckons us for another visit. We’ve all heard of the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation and the windmills in Bangui, but to get a sweeping view of the sea, the rock formation, the windmills, and the rolling mountains all at once, head to Palpalokada. It’s a vast adventure

park where you can hike or ride horses. However, there’s been word that a new set of windmills are currently being constructed in this area. Meanwhile, in the nearby town of Burgos, you will find Tanap Rapids, a picturesque Watershed Forest Reserve of cascading and bluish waterfalls. Take a dip into its cool waters or lie around its rock formations. But of course, we can’t ignore the well-loved destinations. Nestled among coconut groves in Pagudpud, at the edge of Ilocos Norte, Kapuluan Vista Resort

balances modern amenities and nature’s best. Before reaching the resort, you’ll pass by Baugan Bay or famously known as “Blue Lagoon.” Now, what the Blue Lagoon lacks in modern facilities, it more than makes up for with its raw beauty. takes tourists through various destinations, namely, Sarrat Cathedral Elementary School, Marcos Birthplace, Convent Ruins, Sarrat Presidencia, Santa Monica Church, and Sarrat Guesthouse. Santa Monica Church is the most famous, known for being the longest church in the province and because of its impressive roof trusses. The tour continues in the “Military Town of Ilocos Norte” and the “Cradle of Basi Revolt”: Piddig. Walking around town lets visitors explore the Basi Revolt Shrine, the 15th Infantry Memorial, and Saint Anne Church. The next stop is the town of Dingras, considered the “Rice Granary of Ilocos Norte.” The charming town features heritage houses, the ruins of Saint Joseph Church, and a monument dedicated to heroes of World War II. The town of Banna, next on the list, displays the gastronomical treats that Ilocos is known for. Taste chips made of banana and taro, or sip rice coffee while watching how these products are made. The last leg of the tour takes visitors to the town of Nueva Era. Upon arriving at this eco-park, tourists are serenaded with an indigenous thanksgiving dance called “Tadek” by the Tingguian community living in the region, after which visitors are given free rein to explore the eco-park’s traditional tree houses and huts. n

The Legend of Buntud Tulan (Blaan)

Bong Dong and Kay Dong went back to their group and gathered as many warriors as they could. The Blaan leaders did the same. They met at Sapu, Padidu, and both tribes fought each other mightily and savagely. When Bong To and Kay To shot their arrows, they killed thousands of Manobos including Bong Dong and Kay Dong. A few Blaans were also killed, but they won the war. The day after the encounter the victorious tribe gathered the dead bodies and piled them in one place. Weeks, months, and years passed until the piled dead bodies turned to soil forming a hill. The Blaans called it Buntud Tulanâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a hill of bones. It is a living evidence of the triumph of the Blaans over the Manobos.

Once upon a time, there was a war between the Blaans and the Manobos in the place. The Manobos were experts in the use of spears, while the Blaans were experts in the bow and arrow. There was a misunderstanding between the two groups which resulted in war. The leaders of the Manobos were Bong Dong and Kay Dong while those of the Blaans were Bong To and Kay To. One day, Bong Dong and Kay Dong went to the area of their opponents and killed many Blaans. Bong To and Kay To did the same to the Manobos and so the war started.

PAL crew reminisce JPii fLights BY jonathan p. gesmundo

he close affinity of Filipinos with the late Pope John Paul II—who was canonized last April 27—was forged during the 1981 and 1995 Philippine Papal visits. That Filipinos were able to experience Pope John Paul II up close twice is mainly because he traveled more than any other Pontiff in recent history, recognizing that not all Catholics can afford a pilgrimage to the Vatican. Employees of flag carrier Philippine Airlines, the Pope’s official carrier for his visits to the Philippines, were the envy of many Filipinos as they had the chance to meet JPII up close. Both in 1981 and 1995, the front cabin of the PAL aircraft that carried the Pontiff and his entourage was reconfigured and fitted with special seats and a full-flat ‘Skybed’ for his utmost comfort. Retired PAL Captain Tereso B. Lebumfacil who piloted the Boeing 727, vividly remembers his special assignment to fly the Pope from Manila to six cities within a span of three days. When John Paul II boarded the aircraft on Feb. 19, 1981 that would take him to Cebu, he told Capt. Lebumfacil, “I am now in your hands.” Before the whirlwind journey throughout the archipelago ended, the Bishop of Rome gifted Capt. Lebumfacil with a Holy Rosary that he treasures to this day. Flight Steward Daniel Pido, one of those assigned to the flight, reminisced, “Every mealtime, the Papal secretary would choose three members of the entourage to join His Holiness. The Pope, then in the pink of health, ate and drank heartily, wiping off all the sauce from the plate with bread and would dilute his red wine with mineral water.” “The presence of a powerful person, such as a head of state, normally charges the air inside the cabin with his presence and fills all those around him with awe. Pope John Paul II exuded a different aura. The first time I met him, I immediately felt the presence of a holy man and I got filled up with a feeling of wellbeing that tears began to swell in my eyes,” Pido added. Close to 14 years later, PAL again rolled out the red carpet for its very special passenger, who presided over the tenth World Youth Day.

While the aging Pontiff restricted his grueling itinerary to Manila for health reasons, the intensity of Filipinos’ affection did not wane a bit. When time came for the then 74-year-old Pontiff to leave, PAL dressed up the front section of its Airbus 300 jet with special seats, a table and a Skybed. Heading the cabin attendants of that Papal flight from Manila to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, was Flight Purser Lito Trias, who takes pride at having the opportunity to have served the Pope also in 1981. “The Pope’s aura did not change. He was truly a holy man,” Trias recalls. Before the plane took off, His Holiness obliged the flight crew with photo opportunities. Pilot-in-command Capt. Spike Juliano was awestruck when he sat beside the Pontiff for the photoop. The visibly tired Pope told Juliano in a voice barely above whisper, “I bless you and your whole family.” For members of the PAL crew privileged enough to have served JPII on his visits to the country, these cherished memories now hold even deeper spiritual meaning. After all, not everyone can say they served a saint. n
