Safety: Our Paramount Priority

6

I’m pleased to share with you the good news that Philippine Airlines has been certified for a further two years, until May 2016, as a registered operator under the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) program. The IOSA is a rigorous audit of the entire operational systems of an airline in promoting safety, based on internationally recognized standards and supported by a strict quality assurance process. It is conducted every two years by the International Air Transport Association or IATA, the global organization of the world’s leading airlines. PAL is the only Filipino carrier to undergo and pass the IOSA, and it has done so biennially since 2006. This means that for 10 years, from 2006 to 2016, PAL is certified as among the safest airlines in the world. That is a major distinction that we are immensely proud of. Recently, we added a new service onboard that raises the bar on safety even higher. PAL has partnered with U.S. firm MedAire, the world’s leading airborne healthcare provider, to offer you round-the-clock access to some of the best medical advice in the world while in the air. This simply means that should a medical emergency occur in-flight, we don’t have to ask for a doctor among your fellow passengers to come forward. Our crew can communicate directly with MedAire’s specialist physicians stationed 24/7 at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, a nationally ranked trauma hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. PAL is also the only Philippine carrier with automated external defibrillators onboard its aircraft flying select long-range routes. Our cabin crew is trained to deploy this equipment during in-flight emergencies, such as when a passenger experiences cardiac arrest. Finally, PAL provides a range of equipment and services for passengers with special needs, including stretchers, wheelchairs, oxygen, lifting services, devices for supporting limbs, and other specialized medical gear. We only require a few days’ notice to arrange such services. When it comes to your safety and well-being at 30,000 feet, you can indeed sit back, relax, and fly with the full assurance that you’re in good hands with PAL. Mabuhay!

f you are thinking of taking a holiday in Australia, your best bet would be on PAL as it gives you the best option with the most number of flights and destinations, covering Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Darwin. A long nine-hour flight to Australia is made more comfortable on PAL with complimentary in-flight meals and a cabin crew whose service motto is to make you feel at home. By mid-October, PAL will have daily flights to Sydney so now is an ideal time to book and grab some good travel deals.

Australia has always been a popular destination. Sydney and Melbourne are on of top of the list of the best and most expensive cities in the world. It seems that there might be a direct correlation between “best” and “expensive” but if you apply being street smart, you can always manage to have a good time in any city without blowing your budget. My son, Justin, who is a professional photographer DARLING DOWN UNDER: Ferrython in based in Shanghai went to sydney’s harbour bridge. Photo courtesy of Melbourne early this year with Destination nsW his girlfriend, Carie, to attend a wedding. While he was on his trip, he kept sending photos of places he went to, from city to outdoor attractions and it was obvious he fell in love with the Australia that he saw. Meanwhile, the Aussies that I have met so far are warm and friendly. They have a straightforward and unpretentious nature, making them easier to get along with unlike other nationalities where you still have to figure out their nuances and take time to get close to. Not many travelers are aware of what our contributor, Issa Bautista, unveils about Northern Mindanao in this issue. One is the Mapawa Nature Park near Cagayan de Oro city where you can start with a trek and end with a jump to a river or rappel down a waterfall. Another is Bukidnon’s Ki Bathala Gardens where Issa reports, “at night, an orchestra of crickets and toads will cradle you to sleep.” Nothing beats natural attractions. ARE YOU READY? in Cagayan de oro, waterfalls are your playground. Photo by oz mendoza

It is both a blessing and a lusty cheer. “Mabuhay” (ma-boo-high) is such a large word that it lends itself to a wide number of secondary uses: Welcome, Congratulations, Thanks, Godspeed, Hello, Good Luck, Cheers, Posit, Sante, Viva, Kambei, Aloha, and many other expressions of goodwill. All these are a part of life, but it is the gift of life that makes them possible. “Mabuhay,” in other words, is an invocation and a celebration of life itself.

Zany Painter’s New Exhibit

Filipino artist Fernando Modesto may have experienced a mild stroke four years ago but he’s still creative. His latest exhibit “Anonymous” features new paintings and collages peppered with childhood toys—marbles, a Barbie doll—mixed with mysterious headless images. Art critic Cid Reyes once wrote of Modesto, “Since Fernando Modesto burst in the art scene in 1977, his one abiding quality has been irreverence, but irreverence laced with zaniness and hilarity.” See Modesto’s exciting new work from August 7 to September 6 at Gallery 3 in Quezon City. www. westgallery.org

Crowd Drawers The recently opened 12 Monkeys (www.facebook. com/12MonkeysPH) bar finally gives Manila's music scene what it’s been missing—a good venue in a central location. PAL in AiR Powered by OnAir! OnAir’s complete wireless inflight entertainment solution boots up aboard Philippine Airlines.

P

BE CONNECTED. Because the Wi-Fi will be fully integrated with the plane’s connectivity, timecritical information will be constantly updated throughout the flight.

hilippine Airlines is the launch customer of OnAir Play, OnAir’s latest Wireless-IFE product, in Abu Dhabi. PAL has become the first carrier in Asia-Pacific to provide its passengers with fully integrated connectivity and inflight entertainment through PAL iN AiR Internet & Mobile Service and PAL iN AiR Wireless Entertainment. Imagine going into a shopping mall, coffee shop, or even someone’s home. You’ll find people using their personal electronic devices to connect with friends, listen to music, surf the internet, watch TV and stay updated on the latest news and sports results. Be it a tablet, smart phone, or laptop, PEDs have revolutionized the way we communicate, digest information and go about our daily lives. PAL iN AiR, uniquely, replicates that experience in the air. PAL iN AiR Internet and Mobile Service, are a major part of the story. Between them, they allow passengers to use email, SMS, social media, surf the Internet, and make calls—just as they do on the ground. All of PAL’s B777 and select B330 aircraft are equipped with PAL iN AiR Internet and Mobile Service. PAL iN AiR Wireless Entertainment is revolutionizing the way people consume content during the flight. Transit Buddies Here’s a list of the top apps that ease movement around the metro. By Tatin Yang

Manila’s public transportation system is not as fleshed out as that of our neighbors, but there are a lot of great apps to help you navigate through the frenzied commuting system. Most of it will require an active Internet connection, but thankfully, the mobile data rates here are very affordable (expect to spend a little over US$1 per day).

Waze

Google Maps

(Free, iOS/Google Play) Too many good features to mention. Destination searches come with quick facts, reviews, and contact details of establishments. Routes come with the option to compare the best mode of transportation. Street View gives panoramic previews of places. And its “Offline Map” option allows you to access a map as big as the Paris metropolitan for when your signal is down.

Trip Barker

(Free, iOS/Google Play) Every lost driver’s best friend. Enter a destination and Waze will take you step by step through the fastest route. Includes community-based updates such as accidents or hazards on the road. Although excellent in finding shortcuts, review your route before following it as it may include unfamiliar and potentially sketchy side streets.

(Free, Google Play) Take the guesswork out of Manila’s transportation system with this winner of the 2013 Philippine Transit App Challenge. It provides jeepney, bus, and train routes, directions, and traffic and weather updates, plus fare estimates, event listings, and nearby points of interest from ATMs, pharmacies, and restaurants. It will soon be available in cities outside Manila.

(Free, iOS/Google Play) The official app of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, get real-time traffic updates on the city’s major roads and highways. A separate section includes useful information like a directory on towing services and rules on swerving, coding, violations, and more.

GrabTaxi

(Free, iOS/Google Play) Avoid long queues as this app lets you book a taxi. Book a private car for a higher a mount through GrabCar. GrabTaxi’s service includes a booking fee (approximately US$1.60 or Php70) on top of your metered fare while GrabCar provides a quoted fare based on your destination.

On the Wish List

International transit apps we hope would come to the Philippines:

Easy Taxi

(Free, iOS/Google Play) This operates similarly as Grab Taxi, with a few changes to its interface and offers free booking for Smart Communications subscribers.

Lyft

Hitching made high-tech. The San Francisco-based startup lists a network of thoroughly inspected car owners you can request a lift from.

Uber

(Free, iOS/Google Play) Safe. Comfortable. Convenient. Book a private car through Uber. Although pricier than a taxi (expect to pay around US$4 or Php200 for a three-kilometer trip), it’s most useful during rush hour and finding a ride to a destination other taxi drivers would complain about taking you to. Upon creating your account, share your promo code with friends to get Php300 off your credit. Bookings are via credit card only.

RelayRides

The vehicular equivalent of Airbnb. If you’ve got a car to spare, have it rented out. You can set the rates yourself and RelayRides takes a cut from the profit.

Life Down Under

bondi beach The name Bondi (pronounced “BOND-eye”) just rolls off the tongue with a certain flair. Australia’s busiest beach may only be a kilometer-long, but it receives thousands of visitors daily from all over the globe. Its lifeguards are so renowned—and not to mention, good-looking too—that a TV series called Bondi Rescue was created.

In the 2013 annual report of Economist Intelligence Unit on the world’s most livable cities, Sydney ranked seventh while Melbourne secured the number 1 spot. Telegraph Travel says, “Apart from its madefor-television harbour, this city [Sydney] has just about everything a visitor might desire: great surf beaches, world-class cuisine, a flamboyant nightlife, high-end shopping, art galleries, museums, grand Victorian parks – not to mention the Sydney Opera House, one of the greatest buildings of the 20th century.”

Palm beach No less beautiful, Palm Beach is an exclusive two-kilometer beach located an hour away north of the city. If you’ve had your fill of people watching at Bondi, then this is your breather. Come wintertime, Palm Beach becomes a good spot to catch migrating humpback whales. Photo by Hamilton Lund

airline news

AustrAliAn Flights ExpAndEd As PAL upgrades its service to Sydney, it commemorates how air travel is all about the experience.

F

requent travelers have long discovered that the total airline experience, especially on long-haul flights, is directly proportional to the quality or character of the whole flight, whether it’s for business or pleasure. With PAL, passengers are in for a different kind of travel experience. The flag carrier endeavors to make everyone feel at “home in the sky.” Take for instance the nine-hour flight to Sydney, Australia. The 254-seater, bi-class PAL A340 jet offers business class seats that are convertible to full flat beds and more passenger legroom—available even in Economy. The complimentary inflight meals, dished out by professional cabin attendants, are designed by well-known culinary experts such as Fernando Aracama, Bruce Lim, and See Cheong Yan. Much more, passengers may enjoy the latest Hollywood movies, TV programs, and music. The business class’ in-seat audio-video on-demand forms part of

the modern entertainment system. Tradition also dictates that Filipino travelers—whether flying out or into Manila—always bring at least one balikbayan box, if not gigantic luggage, filled with pasalubong (souvenirs for family and friends). PAL’s free bag allowance augurs well for this tradition. All these flight offerings are complemented by PAL’s trademark cabin crew service, marked by Filipino warmth, charm and hospitality.

“It was never a proposition of simply taking them from point A to point B.” When PAL pioneered air travel to Australia, foremost consideration was passenger comfort and convenience. The airline succeeded at developing these routes because passengers were satisfied with the PAL experience. It was never a proposition of

simply taking them from point A to point B. To extend its service to passengers, flights to Sydney which are available four times a week, will now be upgraded to daily flights beginning October 16, 2014. PAL also flies twice daily to Darwin, Brisbane, and Melbourne (every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday). On these flights, PAL continues their dedication to offer value for money, assuring passengers that they get value for their money . So the next time you’re planning a visit to Sydney, you can expect no less from the flag carrier, the only fullservice airline in the Philippines. PAL first flew to Sydney It’s a reputation on October 6, 1965, and to Melbourne on built over the September 9, 1971. last seven decades. n

Beach season may be over but Australia continues to create a buzz. Here are the hot new spots of Harbour City. By Nicholas Gordon

ustralia's largest city may appear laid-back to the casual observer, but the fact is, Sydney rarely stands still. That's especially true in the cooler months, when the focus turns away from the beach and toward the endless array of worldclass restaurants, trendy cafés, and lively bars the Harbour City has to offer. Check out the latest. Eat Sydney's love affair with Korean cuisine is well established, but newcomer Moon Park (www.moon-park.com.au) in inner city Redfern, is taking things up a notch. Owned by chefs from former finediner Claude’s, the restaurant has dark tones and a lovely aspect overlooking Redfern Park. Start with their cucumber kimchi and then tackle a bulgogi beef burger.

Greek food is another Sydney favourite and cavernous eatery Alpha (www.alpharestaurant.com.au) marks the cuisine’s triumphant re-emergence in the CBD. The slick dining room proves the perfect setting for a feast starting with mezze plates of olives, fetta and hummus. Then it’s time for classics like spanakopita, eggplant moussaka and spit-roasted chicken with tzatziki and lemon. The beautiful beachside suburb of Manly isn’t simply banking on its good looks anymore; it now boasts excellent eateries. Papi Chulo (merivale.com.au/papichulo) is a good example. Located on Manly Wharf, it serves tempting fare from the Americas. Smoked pork ribs and Cuban pork sandwiches share space on the menu alongside ceviche and empanadas.

Drink - Bars Sydney’s bar scene has come a long way since laws were changed back in 2008 to allow smaller, more intimate venues to operate. The CBD, and hot spots like Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, and Newtown, are now crowded with raucous small bars. Ramblin’ Rascal Tavern (Basement, 60 Park St., Sydney) is one such place. The bar offers local craft beer, edgy cocktails, and a stellar selection of cognac—all served up by amiable barkeeps. In Darlinghurst, Kubrick's (www.kubricks. com.au) is inspired by the legendary film director (and it’s located on Stanley Street no less). No dark and dingy corners here; instead, there are geometric sculptures, framed prints on the wall, and out the back, a dazzling chandelier illuminating a greenery-fringed courtyard. Try the

signature Kubrick Fizz and tuck into tasty cheese and meat plates. The Lobo Plantation (www.thelobo.com. au) is a tropical-themed basement bar with over 150 different types of rum, one of Sydney’s biggest selections. Sip on a Pineapple Spritz, Cheeki Tiki or be transported to the Caribbean with a Havana Night. Drink - Cafés Operating out of a large industrial space, Brewtown Newtown (www.brewtownnewtown.com) is a shrine to coffee. You can get espresso, single origin and filter coffee, as well as the ubiquitous flat white. For breakfast, they serve gourmet fry-ups, and for lunch, hearty toasted sandwiches. Baker Bros (www.bakerbros.com.au) is another new establishment pouring espresso, and if you drink it at the bar Italian-style, it will only cost one dollar. After-hours, they offer Aperol, Campari, and plenty of good Italian vino. The Lobo Plantation’s Communist Sour

Watch Sydney is bringing the glamour back to a night out at the flicks. It’s all thanks to Surry Hills' Golden Age Cinema and Bar (www. ourgoldenage.com.au). Housed in a gorgeous Art Deco building, the 60-seat cinema shows new releases and handpicked classics. Their moodily lit bar offers cocktails, flavored popcorn and ice-cream sundaes. Stay Set on Sydney Harbour, Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel (www. watsonsbayhotel.com.au) is a 1930s-era lodging transformed after an elegant makeover. The result is 31 suites boasting king-sized beds and deep baths. With the hotel perched directly above the shoreline, you won’t want to leave your room, but when you do, you’ll find yourself moments away from Camp Cove beach and the dramatic beauty of South Head. Downstairs, the hotel’s bar has been given a nautical makeover and teems with Sydneysiders on sunny days.

Shop Once considered bohemian, Newtown (www.newtownprecinct. com.au/shopping) has gentrified rapidly and now draws visitors day and night. The suburb’s main artery, King Street, hosts a range of trendy retailers. Stop by one of the strip’s vintage fashion outlets or peruse local designers’ wares. You’ll also find shops selling records, stationary, books, and home wares. King Street also offers a staggering choice of Thai restaurants. n

travel essentials

Your ClassiC Companion It's not always a smooth journey when you travel, but having the right companion can make the difference. By Kara R. Santiago

W

ith every vacation and trip you take, another fragment to complete one’s web of memories is born. The sights, sounds, and souls you encounter are one of the best rewards of exploring foreign lands as these experiences shape a person’s outlook and perspective in life. Throughout anyone’s travels, jitters usually arise from the concern of the process of getting there, of treading unfamiliar territory. What one needs is a constant companion who will help keep your feet on the ground all while telling your story with you. The key lies in finding the perfect candidate, someone who’s been trusted enough to soldier on through years and years, without failing to deliver on what is expected of it. Rimowa, a true test of time dating back to 1898, has been trusted by people as their travel essential for decades now and serves as a testament to the timelessness of this pillar of modern travel. In the 1950s, when the

company released its first aluminum design, the grooves we see in the collections today have already been present—as if serving as a constant sign of the years that have passed and have yet to come. As far as classic companions go, these stars know the perfect luggage to fit their fashion taste. Celebrities spotted with a Rimowa in tow include Jessica Alba and Gwyneth Paltrow who stand out with their Bohemian style, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde who rock the edgy look, and Bradley Cooper in his distinct dapper flair.

This iconic shiny silver aluminum look has charmed many hearts from generations over. The range, preferred by most globetrotters, helps tell the stories of one’s adventures in the busy streets of Shibuya and the rugged Australian outback, down to the unpredictable weather in London and the rising temperatures in the Middle East—all while acquiring dents and scratches, that not only add character, but also signify the

sturdiness and reliability that comes with unparalleled German innovation, quality and design. Bauxite, a weathered rock found in abundance under the earth’s crust, is the most important raw material in manufacturing high-quality aluminum. It is also the secret behind Rimowa’s durability, ensuring your luggage gets to your destination safely with you. As a sustainable resource, you are assured that you jet set with the environment in mind, too. You can never go wrong with a classic piece that is high-tech and handmade, keeping technology and tradition in the highest priority. So no matter where your next destination may be, Rimowa is sure to prove itself as the only travel essential you will ever need—timeless, reliable, and will stand the test of time and beyond. n Rimowa is available in Glorietta 4 and Newport Mall.

ritish Columbia is Canada at its rugged, natural best. The province is defined by towering mountains, untrammeled forest, the mesmerizing Pacific coast, and native Canadian culture. Part of what makes BC so alluring is the fact that each of these elements can be enjoyed in or near the cosmopolitan metropolis of Vancouver. So set aside three days to go wild in this city, and a bit of extra time to get lost along the way. Day 1: The Urban Outdoors Head to Stanley Park, where 1,000 acres of parkland are yours to explore in the early morning light. Flit among giant Western Red Cedars, skip stones over the Lost Lagoon, meander along the century-old Vancouver Seawall, and take your pictures of the

Siwash Rock, Brockton Point totem poles, and iconic Lion’s Gate Bridge. Zip across the bridge to North Shore for a wild mountain ride with Endless Biking, BC’s best mountain biking outfitter. Many of their instructors are pros who know how to make even the most inexperienced riders feel at ease on the challenging trails that mark stunning Grouse Mountain. Sign up for a private lesson or a group tour, or take a three-day tour to explore some of Canada’s best high-country terrain. In honor of a ride well done, visit Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers for an

organic coconut porter and a shot of Alanna Espresso Vodka. Cross back into the city and sail on the Aquabus at Hornby Street Station to Granville Island, which is packed with galleries, waterfront restaurants, and breweries. SakeMaker and the Liberty Distillery for handcrafted libations of the finest ilk. Not far from the Hornby Street Station, you’ll find the Long Table Distillery’s comfortable tasting room. Sample instant classics from the Apothecary Series. Climb the 168 meters to the precipice of Queen Elizabeth Park for remarkable views of the city set against the North Shore Mountains. The park is home to an excellent arboretum and conservatory, and some of the city’s most whimsical statues and monuments. A great way to visit some of the city’s most unique neighborhoods is with Vancouver Brewery Tours. Sample the wild and outrageous (Storm Brewing), the technically perfect (33 Acres Brewing), and the whimsical (Parallel 49 Brewing) while taking in the sights of Gastown, Yaletown, the West End, and more. Later, hit the ice at the heart of town at the Robson Square Ice Rink, open midNovember through the end of February. Skating is free if you bring your own skates, otherwise you can rent a pair for C$4 (Php200)

Day 2: Far East Adventures Hit the road and roll east out of the city for a glimpse of British Columbia in its purest form. Visit Chilliwack’s Old Yale Brewing for a pint of their famed Sasquatch Stout (Sasquatch is another name for Bigfoot). Continue on to Harrison Hot Springs (1.5 hours from Vancouver) and meet up with Bill Miller of Sasquatch Country Adventures for a scientific expedition of the highest order. Bill will regale you with tales of Sasquatch sightings, tour you through the remarkable countryside in his tricked-out ATV, and show you how to plaster cast a Sasquatch footprint. Return to Harrison to soak in more hot springs at the Harrison Beach Hotel, hike around picturesque Harrison Lake, the largest lake in the Coast Mountains,

or dip a hook and line into the glassy waters to compete for fish alongside hungry bears—just make sure to keep your distance. Head back to Chilliwack and stop by Fred’s Custom Tackle for a guided fishing adventure with Fred Helmer, one of Canada’s top fishermen. Together you’ll explore the Fraser and Pitt Rivers aboard his custom 32-foot Thunder Jet Offshore boat, with salmon and sturgeon in your sights. Fishing trips end in the town of Mission. Visit the Mission Springs Brewery overlooking the Fraser River for pints

of Strongman Ale, Bombshell Blonde, and Big Chief Cream. Day 3: From Sea to Sky Wake before dawn

British Columbia boasts over 80 of these geothermal delights, and they’re some of Canada’s most beautiful. Here are five of our favorites to get you glowing:

rich waters are filtered, chlorinated, and directed to the popular Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa, where five pools are regulated to toasty temperatures of 29-40 C. When to visit: Open all yearround. To access the pools, you’ll have to stay at the hotel (from $139 per night) or spend $100 at the spa. If you’re on a budget, don’t worry: there’s a public pool in the center of the lakeside town, where a good ol’ soak in the 38 C waters costs $9 bucks.

Know More Fancy making a holiday after your hot spring experience? Head out on B.C’s Hot Springs Circle Route, using www. HelloBC.com as your guide.

Keep In Mind

Don’t wear your best jewelry. The sulfur in hot springs water can tarnish it. Bring sneakers for moving around some hot springs to protect your feet amidst slippery rocks.

Hot Springs Cove, Vancouver Island Ever tried a hot waterfall? In a small canyon on Vancouver Island’s remote west coast, bask in the 51 C cascade that fills up five natural pools leading down to the Pacific Ocean. The best time to come is at an incoming tide, when you can lie back and let the waves wash over you in a salty rush...all while staying cozy in your tub. The best way to get to Hot Springs Cove is with a Tofino-based tour operator, who’ll often throw in a whale watching tour into your day trip (from $110). Try Adventure Tofino Company, rated five stars by TripAdvisor. And while you could make the Hot Springs Cove trip in about seven hours from Vancouver, as B.C.’s largest island, it is a serious dreamland of ancient rainforest and Pacific waves—begging you to stay for more than a day. When to visit: Spring, summer and fall. Getting there: Hot Springs Cove is a full-day trip from Vancouver. Take the ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo, then a bus to Tofino. From here, the hot springs can be reached by boat, kayak or floatplane. www.adventuretofino.com/hot-springs

Halfway River Hot Springs, East Kootenays Fancy going au naturel in a beautifully wild setting? Deep in the Kootenay Rockies, Halfway Halfway Hot Springs’ wooden hot tubs and natural riverside pools are the perfect place to go nude or prude. Be thankful for the bumpy ride up a logging road to get here, this hot springs’ remoteness is what stops more weekenders from visiting. And with basic campgrounds nearby, why not bring your tent and make a weekend

of it? When to visit: Late summer to early fall, when logging roads are generally dry. Getting there: Halfway River Hot Springs, Ainsworth, and St. Leon are all a day’s drive from Vancouver. Luckily, the drive through Okanagan Valley out to the Kootenays is all tumbling orchards and snowcapped peaks, making it one of the best road trips out there. You can also download the Kootenay Rockies app (www.kootenayrockies.mobi) for easy backcountry directions to these spots.

Ainsworth Hot Springs, West Kootenays Filled with 42 C mineral bathing waters and a natural sauna, we wish all caves were like Ainsworth’s. 40-minutes’ drive from Nelson, the steamy grottos are part of Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort, where the $12 entrance fee also includes access to a large 35 C outdoor pool overlooking Kootenay Lake and the beautiful Purcell Mountains beyond. When to visit: Open all year-round. www.hotnaturally.com

St. Leon Hot Springs, West Kootenays Most of B.C.’s hot springs are set deep in the valleys, but St. Leon is unique in its cedar forest setting up a steep hillside. There are three pools of varying temperatures to bathe in, and while you definitely get the sense of being in the wild here, you can also regulate the guitar-shaped main pool’s temperature to your liking. Perfect. When to visit: Late summer to early fall, when logging roads are generally dry. n

For a nation that is currently under military rule, the “good life” goes on nonetheless. Well, coup or not, here are 10 places that keep tourist arrivals swelling. SHOPPING Central Embassy This 18-billion-baht shopping complex, which opened only in May, houses brands like Bottega Veneta, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Vivienne Westwood… the luxe list goes on. Huge and spacious, everything here is stateof-the-art, from its digital buttons to selfsanitizing toilets.

The mall is also home to Embassy Diplomat Screens, a cinema complex which only seats around 30 persons per theater. A posh lounge, welcome eats and sweets, fully reclining sofas, alcoholic drinks, and a butler on call can be enjoyed for a sweet sum of 900 baht. www.centralembassy.com Siam Square One Often referred to as an “urban shopping street,” this mall had its soft opening on July 5 (grand opening is on November 2014). Located across Siam Paragon and walking distance from five other shopping malls, Siam Square One is expected to have over 500 shops. The mall is popular among young fashionistas while it’s also one of the most wheelchair-accessible malls in the country.

Terminal 21 Relatively new, this concept mall adjacent to BTS Asoke is designed to look like a contemporary airport. Stepping inside is like entering a departure area. Each floor takes you to famous cities, featuring a Caribbeaninspired lower ground floor, a Parisian street style section, and a London city scene, to name a few. One of the most crowded areas at Terminal 21 is the San Francisco Pier 21 food court where you can have a great Thai meal for as low as 27 baht. www.terminal21. co.th Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Bangkok won’t be Bangkok without its annual Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Fair. She’s no pro, but this young amateur photographer has been gaining attention from the New York Times and Vogue Italia.

ith a camera strapped to her neck, 27-year-old Xyza Cruz Bacani may look like the average tourist in Hong Kong. But as soon as she’s done shooting on the streets, she returns to her day job: not in a photography studio, but in a condominium unit where she works as a domestic worker for a local lady. Such is life of Bacani who has been working there for the past nine years. She may consider herself a hobbyist, but her works have been featured all over the internet. One of her photos has also been shortlisted in a National Geographic contest in Hong Kong. Perhaps it’s how she makes use of light and shadow to highlight her subjects. Or perhaps, it’s simply her story. Whatever it is, we can’t deny that she has the eye.

(TOP LEFT) The food culture of Hong Kong is very rich so this man is like a representation of it. I love the framing and the intense look of the chef while doing his craft. (BELOW LEFT) This is the selfie generation. The photo simply makes me smile when I remember these young girls taking a group selfie.

How did you get into photography and how long have you been taking photos? I’m a self-taught photographer for almost four years now. I just love to shoot the mundane things around me, to find the “extra” in the ordinary.

1

How does your employer regard your hobby and your popularity? She is happy for me. She is very proud of me and supportive. What is your normal day like? When do you find time to take photos? Just like a normal human being: eat, sleep, shoot, pray, love. Every time I’m off or I’m asked to run an errand for my employer, I take these opportunities to take photos. What subject do you like shooting? Mostly it’s street photography. It’s my stress reliever because it’s free and exciting. Which photographers do you look up to? My mentor Rick Rocamora because he is a great man. I also like Pedro Luis Raota’s black and white images, Henri Cartier Bresson’s style, and Elliot Erwitt’s humor.

2

As the world has been taking notice of your talent and story, what are your plans for your photography? Nothing specific at the moment. I just want to shoot for my soul. Maybe someday it will become my day job, but for now I enjoy photography as a hobby. It’s a break from my job so I’m always excited every time I hold a camera. Photography is always a learning process, and I don’t want being professional to get in my head. What is your dream photography subject? To travel around the world and shoot different stories. I would love to shoot the streets of Japan, the lovers in Paris, or the buzz of New York City. What lesson can people learn from your story? Never give up. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t do. Hard work always pays off. n See more of Bacani’s works at http://xyzabacani photography.com

1. I shot this during winter at Hong Kong Harbour. The light that day was wonderful. I crouched on the floor to take a shot from this angle and he almost stepped on me! 2. I usually use geometry in my photos. The architecture in Hong Kong is great so I might as well use them as a background. 3. I took this on my way home. It’s another shot that I can never repeat even though I pass by this area most of the time.

hen it comes to bargain shopping in Manila, Greenhills is the top-of-mind choice. Clothes, gadgets, and pearls— name it, and you’ll find them here. But recently, there’s more to Greenhills than shopping. Check out the new wing of Promenade Mall. This expansion of the pre-existing restaurant strip is the brainchild of Precy Florentino, president of the Music Museum Group. It houses a handful of restaurants, most of which can only be found here, and a few lifestyle shops. The new wing is very modest in size, yet tastefully done. Its central atrium is awash in natural light, giving off a relaxed atmosphere. On the second level by the entrance to the cinemas, you will be welcomed with a grand metal mural crafted by National Artist for the Visual Arts BenCab. It’s a fitting pièce de résistance to the cinemas because Florentino’s vision is to recapture the glory and elegance of moviehouses in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The new wing only has three theaters—cinemas 6, 7, and 8—but they boast of the latest audio

technology called Dolby Atmos. It drives sound across a venue, splitting it across multiple speakers to create a positional effect. In simple terms, it lets you “hear the whole picture.” Just imagine hearing the sound where it supposedly comes from. Is there a truck driving past in the movie? Then you’ll hear its roaring engine pass by you as if you were the one being overtaken. With 64 speakers (versus seven speakers in typical cinemas) placed strategically around each cinema, the big screen has never been this immersive. Paolo F. Mendoza, Vice President of the Music Museum Group, says putting up one Dolby Atmos theater is like putting up three regular theaters. He adds, “You need to invest in the latest processor used by Dolby, as well as special Perlux screens. The new Promenade screens are also bigger—floor to ceiling in height and spread side to side—in essence, a mini Imax.” With these innovations in the mall’s amenities, it seems like more and more people will be driving to Greenhills. But this time, it’s not just for the shopping—hooray for the boyfriends! n

FOODIE ALERT

Malabon off the eaten track

This city north of Manila is an unlikely place for food tripping. By Diana C. Camacho Photos by Michael Mariano When I think about Malabon, two things that come to mind are the Malabon Zoo and pansit Malabonnoodles smothered in yellow shrimp juice and topped with seafood and eggs. After a trip to the city, I was surprised to know that their culinary repertoire includes more than its well-known pansit.

cocina luna Let’s start this food guide with a watering hole! Cocina Luna, a pub located on—where else—General Luna Avenue, upgrades your usual neighborhood drinking joint with Instagram-worthy interiors and pub favorites like Kielbasa sausage, fish and chips, and pulled pork sliders. Try their tapa (cured beef) and tocino (cured pork) if you’re looking for something more hearty after getting boozed up.

Judy ann's crispy pata Practically an institution in the city, their crispy pata (deep fried pork knuckles) boasts of a slightly sweet and tangy flavor and spoon-tender meat—so soft you can cut it with a spoon.

t’s past 1:30 p.m. and yet it feels like early morning. All I see is a table full of people leisurely eating their lunch and some servers in their crisp khaki uniforms greeting guests on occasion. I had arrived at Infinity Resort. I had heard of some not so enticing stories of the cramped beaches here in Puerto Galera— White Beach being one of them—but Infinity Resort, just a 10-minute ride away from White Beach, hardly matched those expectations. If anything, the resort was silent. The swaying of palm leaves notwithstanding. Infinity Resort isn’t the only

resort at Talipanan Beach by a long shot. In fact, it is flanked by other establishments. None of these, however, look anything like Infinity. With its modern crisscrossed lightwood exteriors, infinity pool, exclusive beach, and minimal doors, Infinity is anything but cramped. recipes from the indigenous Mangyan people to soothe and relax the entire body. A Dead Sea salt scrub was also a heavenly experience. Using palm oil and some salt, the scrub cleansed and smoothed out my skin. Beyond Infinity Beyond the resort, there are other areas to explore apart from the nearby White Beach. The family-friendly Mangyan Village, a recreation of the indigenous group’s usual mountainous village, is just a three-minute-drive from the resort. There, a wide range of Mangyan products like woven baskets, paintings, and jewelry are available for purchase. The Nipa huts that dotted the village stretching atop a hill and the bamboo bridge which leads over the river and onto another segment of the village are good spots for pictures. For the more adventurous, Puerto Galera has around 40 popular dive sites with over 3,000 species of marine life so underwater activities are recommended. I went snorkeling for the first time and was surprised by the fish tickling my legs and even the frightening sight of some swordfish. The snorkeling route also brought

me to see some giant clams covered in moss and barnacles. On land, the horizon of Puerto Galera makes for a great view because it is dotted with little islands and sand bars. If you ask the local boatmen, they can take you to the coral gardens where an underground cave can be explored. It takes about 20 minutes by boat and once you arrive, it’s a rather thrilling climb around the side of a cliff before entering the mouth of the cave with its cool waters and tiny fish. During low tide, it can be further explored which leads out back to the shore of the coral gardens. Grab a cup of halo-halo (shaved ice dessert with beans and other sweets) from the stall on the beach when you’re done. I didn’t regret it. n

ith 7,107 islands, a beach resort is quite common in the Philippines. But have you been to one that’s built on a sprawling mango orchard by the sea? Such orchard is the location of the latest Astoria resort—the group’s first foray into Palawan. Located in Honda Bay which is surrounded by mountains and beachfront views of the Sulu Sea, Astoria Palawan blends seamlessly with the environment. A contemporary rustic design is evident in most of the facilities, but you will be delightfully surprised by the refreshing splashes of color here and there, courtesy of interior designers Ivy and Cynthia Almario. Forty rooms and suites are spread across 13 villas, each with modern amenities including Wi-Fi. In the rooms, playful schools of fish line walls and bright colors will make you feel invigorated. No expense was spared in keeping the resort as ecofriendly as possible. This is Palawan after all, home to 200 kinds of birds, over 600 species of butterflies, and 1,500 host plants. Over at The Reserve, their restaurant, you can have your fill of wood fire brick oven pizzas, roasts, and fantastic seafood (you won’t go wrong with the sea bass). The service is good too, as you would expect from a well-trained staff. On a scorching day, the 39-meter-long infinity pool called The Pod beckons. It has a handful of sunken loungers for winding down with a cocktail or a bottle of beer in hand. It’s especially relaxing because of the pool bubblers. If you fall asleep on the lounger, an altogether different scene awaits when you wake up. At night, the underwater pool lights turn from indigo to red, resembling the changing hues of the aurora borealis. During my stay, we were blessed to see a looming full moon. It was unsettling at first, but when the moon cast its glow on the sea, it was a sight that no camera could capture. It was a good night’s promise from Astoria Palawan. n

Whale Shark Diary Southern Cebu proves to be worth a detour for its resident giants and charming towns. By Jun Ventura Photos by Erwin Lim

few years ago, my adventurous daughter Kim and our former senior writer Lori Blackburn swam with the whale sharks in Oslob, Cebu. When they came back for work, they were all smiles and Kim made me more envious when she said that she was able to swim so close to the whale shark that she could have actually touched it, but she didn’t (rules don’t allow it). I knew I had to try it, especially since Cebu is so accessible with several PAL flights a day and the

town of Oslob is just three hours away from Cebu City. To control interaction with humans, the Oslob local authorities limit the whale shark encounter between 6.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. So it’s either you leave Cebu City early in the morning or stay overnight in Oslob or nearby towns. Cebu-based award-winning photographer Erwin Lim and I opted to stay overnight at the Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort so we didn’t have to wake up early and also check out their new cottages

which turned out to be tastefully designed and furnished. Another nice thing about the resort is the whale shark area is just a 15-minute boat ride away. The following morning, we were blessed with clear blue skies and calm waters as the resort’s boat shuttled us to the small beach for the whale shark encounter. Compared to the past, Erwin noted improvements such as a better visitors’ registration area and how there are now separate toilet and shower areas for men and women. The procedures for the whale shark encounter are quite simple. You just register your name and listen to a short lecture about the whale sharks and the “dos” and don’ts” like no touching of these creatures—it’s a hefty fine and a repeat violation would land you in jail. The pricing of the encounters are socialized to favor local tourists. Locals are charged Php300 to watch the whale sharks from the boat while if you want to swim with them, it’s Php500 inclusive of the use of a snorkel and mask. For foreign tourists, the rates are double. Life vests are required and come with the fees. Once all these are settled, you board a small boat then the boatman paddles just 150 meters out to a floating rope to join a line of boats filled with visitors waiting for their turn. Again, Erwin noted that the whale shark encounter is now more organized and disciplined. Before, it was every boat for itself, all paddling aggressively after each whale shark sighted on the water. Now, it is more orderly as each boat must take its place along the rope line and boatmen are not allowed to go after the whale sharks. In the middle of boatloads of tourists are two small native boats that feed the whale sharks. With typical Filipino and Cebuano humor, one boat is painted with “Faceboat.com” while another proudly advertises, “WiFi on board.” In just a few minutes, our boatman pointed out that there’s a whale shark behind us headed for the feeder boat. It’s so amazing to watch

a creature so big. Its length is easily 15 feet. Its four-feet-wide mouth moves so gently in the water like a lazy swimmer and it opens its mouth to feed, like a puppy, from the hands of the boatman. I jumped into the water and dove down for a closer look. I was in their aquatic domain. I saw its shape more clearly. Its huge head that tapers off to its tail dominates its body, which is specked with its own unique pattern of black and gray dots. Just so you can imagine the size of a whale shark is, it can be as big as a mini-bus and weigh as much as four adult African elephants. One nudge of its body or a tweak of its tail could easily knock me out and yet, this marine giant, the biggest fish in our planet, moved with so much grace and harmless movements. Maybe, these whale sharks are allowing us to observe them and telling us, in their own gentle exhibitions, look, we are the giants of the sea and we do you no harm. Please do the same and protect us. This is where debate comes in. How do you protect the whale sharks and allow humans to harmlessly interact with them? I myself must confess to selfishness. Ideally, I knew that feeding them disrupts their natural feeding and migratory patterns; and yet, I didn’t want to pass up the chance to encounter them in such a convenient way. Some locals rationalize that if they do not care and feed them, they will migrate to parts where they may be caught and killed, whereas in Oslob, they are not harmed. Another big factor is its good business, providing a lot of livelihood in these parts. It’s almost like a line from the Godfather movie: hey what’s the big deal, “it’s just business.” I prefer to dwell on the positive. You have to credit the locals for making improvements on the whale shark encounter. And perhaps, that brief interaction with these gentle giants will leave you in awe and touch you in a way that will make you care for them and other creatures in our midst. n New Restos Beqaa. Going with the Flow The Cagayan de Oro River is the catalyst to the region’s sprawling biodiversity and panoramic land and waterscapes. From the headwaters in Bukidnon, the river cascades down swelling rapids until emptying into Malacajar Bay. The best way to experience the river is on an inflated raft, courtesy of CDO’s white-water rafting tours. Visitors can choose between beginner and advanced courses offered by a pool of commercial rafting outfitters. We went with The Red Rafts. My group of intrepid wanderers chose the advanced course, challenging us to conquer 21 rapids along a 20-kilometer stretch over five hours. A drizzle throughout our trip made the surrounding greenery misty and humid. We navigated into enigmatic landscapes featuring a host of indigenous plants and animals. In between rapids, we took the time to paddle softly through calm waters to listen to the hums of nature, smell the fresh rain, and gaze at the surrounding cliff

Mischief AMong Monkeys Hold on to your camera—the interesting Philippine macaque may outsmart you!

nblinking, the grizzled guardian blocked the scuffed trail, an upturned palm demanding payment. Midway up the summit of Tawi-Tawi’s Bud Bongao point, our team stares right back, the air thick and tense. No one moves. It’s a high-stakes face-off in the middle of the jungle. One which we can’t let a monkey win. The only naturally occurring monkey in the Philippines, the long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) is, next to us, Southeast Asia’s most prolific primate, found in nearly all nations from Indonesia to Vietnam. Noisy and conspicuous, it grows up to four feet from crown to tail-tip and weighs 20 pounds. It forages in groups called troops that are up to 60 strong. Pests for some and pets for others, the macaques are agile in the trees and surprisingly good in the water. Ever on the lookout for a good meal, they greedily gobble up succulent fruits, jaw-breaking seeds, and the occasional meaty treat. In Thailand and Myanmar, they have even been known to use crude stone tools to break open nuts, clams, and all sorts of shellfish! They play an essential ecological role in disseminating tree seeds, delivering precious little bundles of plant-life within free wads of fertilizer. Though globally classified by the International

Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a species of “least concern,” the Philippine subspecies, known as Macaca fascicularis philippensis, is classified as “near threatened,” having been largely hunted out of its original range. The country’s last great macaque hotspots include the lowland forests of Subic Bay in Zambales, the labyrinthine mangrove swamps of Palawan, and Bongao peak in Tawi-Tawi—a holy mountain guarded by droves of monkeys. For centuries, long-tailed macaques have learned to associate humans with food. No, they don’t eat people. They have instead learned to raid crop fields, fruit orchards, and dumpsters, some growing bold enough to even snatch food and cameras from unsuspecting folks! Having traversed Southeast Asia, I’ve met many macaques—in the steaming swamps of Borneo as we were looking for forest elephants, up the sacred Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur where they hang out near the giant shrine of Hanuman, the Hindu Monkey God, and even in the verdant parks of Singapore where you’ll be fined S$3,000

(over Php100,000) for feeding them bread or bananas. Years ago, when I stayed with an indigenous group in the Philippines’ Sierra Madre mountain range, hunters brought back a macaque—for dinner. It was pure Fear Factor. Well, my anthropology mentors taught me never to refuse food offered by indigenous groups—even rubbery monkey cubes which tasted like boiled socks. Back then, I didn’t think it was humanly possible to laugh, cry, puke, and swallow at the same time. Fortunately, our hosts found it hilarious. Recalling the experience on our way up to Tawi-Tawi’s Bud Bongao point, the stare-fest continued. It had been two minutes and neither party had budged. The monkey bared its teeth, screeched and unleashed its final move—scratching its privates. “We should give it an offering,” finally relented our teammate Munir Hamsaji, tossing the guardian a piece of bread. Victorious, the guardian of Bud Bongao—a graying, bearded old longtailed macaque—snatched the treat and hooted off into the darkness, allowing us to continue to the peak. No wonder they’re so successful, I shrug. They’re masters of extortion. We push up the mountain. Monkey – 1. Climbers - 0. n

No More Monkey Business The Philippine longtailed macaque is protected under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Capturing them for illegal widlife trade or hunting them for sport is punishable by law. So what to do when you encounter the macaque? If it’s being sold, tip off the Department of Environment and Natural Resources at (+632) 920 4417. If it’s out in the wild, remember to secure your gear, minimize eye contact, avoid flash photography and never offer it treats—unless of course it’s blocking your path up a sacred mountain.
