Original Lalique Box
RENÉ LALIQUE A French Art Nouveau Enamel and Gold Automne Pendant Circa 1898 $175,000
A French Art Nouveau enamel, translucent enamel and gold “Automne” pendant by René Lalique. This piece is one of many allegorical jewels that Lalique created to celebrate the beauties of the natural world. In this pendant, autumn is personified through the use of enamel and gold. The pale face is carved in bas-relief into the enamel, carved leaves and enameled berries delicately fall down the arabesquing frame. Lalique was only one of many artists at the time who was fascinated by the transience of nature. The solemn countenance of the face and curling edges of the gold leaves in this pendant suggest an anticipation of the decay and cold that are soon to come with the changing of the seasons. Signed, “LALIQUE” and with French guarantee and maker’s marks. Circa 1898. The pendant has the original fitted leather box embossed with a design of falling leaves, the silk lining of the case is signed with gilt mark R. Lalique/20 Rue Thérèse/Paris. Pictured in Antique and 20th Century Jewellery, by Vivienne Becker, NAG Press London, 1980, page 213. 7

BOUCHERON A French Art Nouveau Plique-à-Jour Enamel, Diamond, and Sapphire Cicada Brooch Circa 1880 $200,000
A French Art Nouveau 18 karat gold and plique-à-jour enamel brooch with diamond and sapphire by Boucheron. This brooch encapsulates the moment that 19th Century haute joaillerie, characterized by the cicada’s sapphire and diamond body, gave way to the avant-garde design and materials of Art Nouveau, as emphasized by the use of en tremblant enamel wings. Circa 1880-1890. “One of Boucheron’s characteristics which attracted particular attention was the ‘metamorphosis’ of seemingly banal or unusual motifs into jewellery of the highest rank. Natural models were carefully studied and transformed by the use of precious materials. Thus, the common form of an insect or plant was sublimated and raised to the level of a miniature work of art,” The Belle Epoque of French Jewellery 1850-1910. Signed: Frederic Boucheron maker’s mark. 10

“The style for decorative arts of the 1920’s was reduced to basic geometry and the color palette was made strong and bold as opposed to the delicate pastels that were fashionable in the decades before the war. This trend became solidly established at the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs, Industriels et Modernes, where visitors were electrified by the explosion of contrasting primary colors, geometric pattern and stylized natural subjects that burst on the scene.” Similar pictured and discussed in American Luxury Jewels from the House of Tiffany, by Falino and Markowitz, editors, Antique Collectors’ Club, 2009, page 144, Plate 91. Signed, “Tiffany Irid Plat” “Tiffany & Co” on watch face.

The “Pleiades” series is considered to be the most magnificent example of astral jewelry ever made by the House of Verdura. Each star represents one of the Seven Sisters of Greek mythology, the daughters of Atlas and Pleione, who changed into stars to escape the hunter Orion. Verdura first created the “Pleiades” brooches in 1940, and in the exuberance of post-war America, these extravagant and unconventional designs found their ideal moment.

The Panthère is an icon of the House of Cartier. Beginning in 1914 when Jeanne Toussaint designed the first Panthère jewel (a watch in onyx and diamond), the panther has come to represent the mysteries of feminine power. This Cartier Panthère ring is completely dimensional and has a swiveling head and moveable paws, charmingly feisty! Signed, “Cartier” 950 partial number 8562 French control marks. Original Cartier box.
