Macklowe Gallery is the world’s premier dealer of Twentieth Century Decorative Arts, specializing in antique and estate jewelry, the lamps and glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany, French Art Nouveau furniture and objects, and lithographs by Alphonse Mucha. Each piece in the Gallery is chosen for its beauty, rarity and historic importance. For 50 years scholars, museum curators, and collectors have sought us out for the best, and this has made Macklowe Gallery respected worldwide. As we look back on the year, we are proudest to have placed works of art and jewelry in the collections of the Australian National Gallery, the Museum of Art and Industry of Hamburg, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. We have also lent works to the Driehaus Museum in Chicago and the Hudson River Museum, just north of New York City. The Gallery’s President, Benjamin Macklowe, is quickly becoming more prominent as a thought leader in the fields of antiques and fine jewelry. He has recently lectured at Christie’s Auction House, the International Society of Appraisers, and the Winterthur Museum, and will be giving more educational talks at important venues in the coming year.

For this year’s holiday catalog we have curated a selection of jewels that is inspired by you, our treasured client. The woman who shops at Macklowe Gallery is chic and sophisticated, and you embrace both the romantic and powerful aspects of your personality. You are proud to wear jewels that show your unerring eye and adventurous good taste, and we are pleased with the unique selection we have for you. We have also put together a highly select group of aesthetically and historically significant decorative arts. Over the last year we hunted down some of the best Art Nouveau and Tiffany we have ever seen, nearly all from private collections that have been off the market for decades, and we have saved them for you to see here for the first time. Thank you for your continued loyalty. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

TIFFANY LAMPS TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Cabbage Rose Table Lamp 31” high x 24½”diameter This exceptional Tiffany Studios Cabbage Rose lamp prominently features Louis Comfort Tiffany’s favorite color, yellow, but in a variety range of tones and hues that range from bright canary to a sunset orange. The petals dance across a rare helmet-shaped shade, adding to the originality of this magnificently colored lamp. Price upon request

80

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Tulip Table Lamp 31 high x 22 diameter A pure red is the most desirable and most difficult color to achieve in glass. With deep reds and vibrant greens, this Tiffany Tulip lamp has the rich contrast for which collectors pine. Price Upon Request

81

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Crocus Table Lamp 22” high x 16” diameter Tiffany’s highly stylized Crocus lamp is evocative of the repeat patterns found in William Morris’ textiles and wallpapers. In the 19th century, Morris’ firm was at the vanguard of the English Arts & Crafts movement, which greatly influenced Louis Comfort Tiffany’s aesthetics. $49,000

TIFFANY LAMPS

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Mandarin Table Lamp 22” high x 25” diameter The iconic Tiffany Studios Mandarin lamp was favored by Frank Lloyd Wright for its low, Japanese inspired geometry. Wright incorporated this model into perhaps his most famous project, Falling Water, and a similar Mandarin lamp can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Price Upon Request

83

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Apple Blossom Table Lamp 18½” high x 12” diameter The Tiffany Miniature Apple Blossom lamp is the smallest flowered lamp produced at Tiffany Studios. By making popular lamps in smaller models, Tiffany gave his clients a versatile selection of beautiful objects with which to decorate their homes. These special pieces are more lighted sculpture than functional lamp. Price Upon Request

84

TIFFANY LAMPS

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Poppy Table Lamp 21¼” high x 16½ diameter This Poppy lamp shows Tiffany’s mastery of metalwork: he incorporated intricate wire mesh in the shade to represent the veins of the leaves and the details of the blossoms, and wove bronze into a fascinating pattern for the Twig and Berry base. Price Upon Request

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Flowering Water Lily Table Lamp 31” high x 20” diameter This Flowering Water Lily lamp is exemplary of Tiffany’s fascination with the mysteries of nature. Rather than using sky blue glass, Tiffany chose a murky, rippled green background, which makes the light, beautifully shaded lilies appear to be floating atop the glassy surface of a pond. Price Upon request

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Dragonfly Table Lamp 20” high x 17” diameter The color of this Tiffany lamp evokes the sun setting over shallow waters with dragonflies swooping down to the surface. The shade sits atop a rare blown glass and bronze base where the opaque blue glass complements the opulent blues of the shade above it, completing Tiffany’s illusion of azure water. Price Upon Request

TIFFANY LAMPS

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Oriental Poppy Table Lamp 25” high x 18” diameter This Oriental Poppy lamp shows Tiffany’s unparalleled ability to render the natural world in glass. By selecting subtly nuanced shades of yellow, Tiffany was able to mimic light passing through paper-thin petals of the poppy blossom. Price Upon Request

87

TIFFANY LAMPS

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Russian Table Lamp 27” high x 20” diameter Although Tiffany never made explicitly religious lamps, the Russian shade closely recalls his ecclesiastical windows in its architectural pattern and the sky blue panels that seem to recede into the shade. The Russian shade is perfectly matched with the Four Virtues base. The four virtues— Truth, Charity, Loyalty, and Purity—are depicted on each side of the column, contributing to the spiritual feel of this special lamp. Price Upon Request

88

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Pair of Six Light Lily Table Lamps 21” high x 6½” diameter Although he was American, Tiffany participated fully in the French Art Nouveau movement. He exhibited at the World’s Fairs in Paris and Turin, where his Lily lamp won widespread acclaim. Praised for its elegance, the Lily has been called the Aristocrat of the Garden. $58,000 per pair

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Set of Six Three-Light Lily Sconces 14” high x 9” wide Tiffany’s Lily models are widely loved because of their delicate beauty and dazzling iridescence. This original matched set of six Lily sconces comes from the home of an esteemed Southern collector. $28,000 per pair

TIFFANY LAMPS

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Drophead Dragonfly Floor Lamp 65” high x 22” diameter

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Peony Border Floor Lamp 78¼” high x 24¼” diameter

The Drophead Dragonfly lamp is a variation on one of Tiffany’s most famous themes. In this special lamp, the wings and heads of the insects form an architectural border, making the dragonflies appear to be in flight.

This monumental Peony Border lamp is exemplary of Tiffany’s ability to “paint” in glass: by setting multi-faceted flowers against a thicket of green leaves and a sky blue ground, he was able to create a beautiful and naturalistic landscape.

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Poinsettia chandelier 60 high x 29 diameter In order to make red glass, Tiffany used gold, copper, or selenium depending upon the desired hue of the final product. That pure red was the hardest color for Tiffany Studios to create, making this vibrant Poinsettia chandelier among the best of this model that Macklowe Gallery has ever owned. Price Upon Request

91

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Twenty-Four Light Lily Chandelier 39¾” high x 22” diameter Tiffany’s Lily lamps have become some of his most famous models because of their simple and elegant beauty. This twenty-four light Lily chandelier is both functional lamp and lighted sculpture, and can be seen as a predecessor to post World War II lighting design. Price Upon Request

92

TIFFANY LAMPS TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Moorish Chandelier33” high x 15” diameter For his Turtleback Tile Moorish chandelier, Tiffany drew inspiration from trips to the Middle East and Northern Africa and used his own glass techniques to create a bold, masculine light. Price Upon Request

93

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Stalactite Chandelier 27” high x 4½” diameter

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Pair of Turtleback Tile Chandeliers 24” high x 12” diameter

Louis Comfort Tiffany used iridescent glass and layering techniques to trap floral motifs between layers of golden glass in this Stalactite chandelier. Tiffany selected a series of these chandeliers for the Fountain Court of his famed Oyster Bay mansion, Laurelton Hall.

These Tiffany Turtleback tile plafonniers were purchased from a prominent Western New York collection. The strong, bold aesthetic of these lamps can work in any interior.

$19,500

Price Upon Request

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Linenfold Table Lamp 22” high x 15¾ diameter In the Linenfold lamp, Tiffany Studios created a trompe l’oeil illusion by expertly molding glass panels to look like silk, a fabric which was commonly used for lamp shades at the turn of the twentieth century. This lamp may appear to be uncharacteristic of the artist, but it shows Tiffany’s versatility and aesthetic range. $22,500

94

TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK Dragonfly Table Lamp 27” high x 20” diameter This Dragonfly lamp is at the pinnacle of Tiffany’s color spectrum, with each piece of glass containing at least four different hues that transition from bright golds to deep blues in an unrestrained yet artful manner. This fantastic shade sits upon a very rare 16-Ball base, where bronze tendons stretch into hollow iridescent glass balls, making this lamp a truly complete work of art. Price Upon Request
