Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz September 27-October 27, 2013
MAD COW THEATRE is founded on the belief that the theatre is a dynamic and powerful means of social understanding, as well as a hugely entertaining art form. Through the combination of passionate, skillful acting and compelling, insightful writing, nurtured by an attentive and ever-changing process, Mad Cow presents entertaining works of theatre to an ever-widening audience — promoting, enhancing and celebrating the human condition through art. Mad Cow Theatre is supported in part with public funds from the United Arts campaign and by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, The Florida Arts Council, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Downtown Development Board, and Orange County Government through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program. A great nation deserves great art! Mad Cow is a 501(c)3 organization and welcomes all donations including funds, materials, time and good will. We are especially delighted when audience members bring others to share the theatrical experience.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Mad Cow Theatre has forged many alliances and made many friends. This endeavor would not be possible without the generous spirit, passion and good will of the following individuals and organizations.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT JON ROBIN BAITZ (Playwright) Baitz’s plays include The Film Society, The Substance of Fire, The End of The Day, Three Hotels, A Fair Country (Pulitzer Prize finalist 1996), Mizlansky/Zilansky, Ten Unknowns, and The Paris Letter, as well as a version of Hedda Gabler (Broadway 2001). He created Brothers & Sisters, the TV series which ran for five seasons, until 2011. Other TV work includes PBS’ version of Three Hotels, for which he won the Humanitas Award, and episodes of The West Wing and Alias. He is the author of two screenplays: the film script for The Substance of Fire (1996) and People I know (2002). He is a founding member of Naked Angels Theatre Company, and on the faculties of the MFA programs at The New School for Drama, and SUNY Stony Brook/ Southampton. His play Other Desert Cities won the Outer Critics Circle Award in 2011. “OTHER DESERT CITIES”? The play’s name refers to a highway
sign on eastbound Interstate 10 in California, which indicates that the freeway is headed towards Indio, California and “other desert cities” (that is, the rest of the Coachella Valley). In an interview with PBS, playwright Jon Robin Baitz also mentions another source for the title – more specifically, the Iraq War: “Well, one of the reasons it’s called Other Desert Cities is because I am thinking about, as someone says in the play, a war going on thousands of miles away in another desert.” FAMILY POLITICS A main theme in the play is the tension between
family members due to political opinions; Brooke is an East Coast liberal, while her parents, Polly and Lyman, are Reagan Republicans. At one point, Polly even describes Nancy Reagan as “like a big sister to me.” With hallmarks like tax cuts, support for small government, and anti-Communism, Reagan Republicanism has become emblematic of the 1980s political climate as well as some modern-day conservatism, such as that supported by people like Polly and Lyman. Set in 2004, Other Desert Cities tackles how being old-school California Republicans shapes them in regards to the Iraq War, their daughter Brooke, and, more mysteriously, their past.
