Mad Cow Theatre Mad Cow Theatre was founded on the belief that the theatre is a dynamic and powerful means of social understanding, as well as a hugely entertaining art form. Through the combination of passionate, skillful acting and compelling, insightful writing, nurtured by an attentive and ever-changing process, Mad Cow presents entertaining works of theatre to an ever-widening audience — promoting, enhancing and celebrating the human condition through art. Mad Cow Theatre is supported in part with public funds from the United Arts campaign and by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, the Florida Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Downtown Development Board, and Orange County Government through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program. A great nation deserves great art! Mad Cow is a 501(c)(3) organization and welcomes all donations including funds, materials, time and good will. We are especially delighted when audience members bring others to share the theatrical experience.

Acknowledgements Mad Cow Theatre has forged many alliances and made many friends. This endeavor would not be possible without the generous spirit, passion and good will of the following individuals and organizations.

The Light in the Piazza The Light in the Piazza is based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer. The story came to life while she lived in Montreal, and it was during a snowstorm that she began to remember Italy and the light in Italy. This became the inspiration for Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas to bring the “child like” love story to the stage. In an interview with the Guardian, Guettel, grandson of Broadway giant Richard Rodgers, explains, “I wanted to write a love story, because I hadn’t found love when I wrote it and needed a vessel to pour all that energy into. There are melodies that are d irectly inspired by my grandfather …” In the same interview Guettel recalls the only dream he ever had of his grandfather: “I was pursuing him across a lobby in New York as he was about to get into an elevator. I wanted to ask him if he thought I was any good. He looked at me and said, ‘You have your own voice.’ Then the doors closed and he was gone.” Perhaps one of the most celebrated scores in the last decade, The Light in the Piazza received six 2005 Tony Awards, including two for Guettel – best original score and best orchestrations. In 2009 Charles Isherwood of the New York Times named The Light in the Piazza one of the most significant musicals of the decade “because it signals the continuing possibility of superior achievement in the classic mold of musical theater, what the Broadway historian Ethan Mordden calls ‘the Great Tradition’.” Craig Lucas’ (Book) plays include Missing Persons, Blue Window, Reckless, God’s Heart, The Dying Gaul, Stranger, Small Tragedy, Prayer for My Enemy and The Singing Forest. He wrote the musical play Three Postcards, music and lyrics by Craig Carnelia; the libretto for the opera Orpheus in Love, music by Gerald Busby; and he has recently completed the libretto for Two Boys, an opera with composer Nico Muhly, commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and scheduled to premiere there in a co-production with the English National Opera. Twice nominated for a Tony (Prelude to a Kiss and The Light in the Piazza), three times for the Drama Desk (Prelude, Missing Persons and Reckless), he has won the L.A. Drama Critics Award Blue Window, the Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Award for best American play (The Singing Forest), the Hull-Warriner Award (The Light in the Piazza), won the Obie Award for best play (Prelude and Small Tragedy).

Mad Cow Theatre presents

The

e c n e i Sc Play l a v i t Fes

JAN 10-12, 2014

For the first time ever, Mad Cow Theatre creates a unique play festival exploring the world of science plays through a weekend of staged readings and discussion forums. Join us as we explore the worlds of science, technology and history through imaginative stories.

An Experiment with an Air Pump by Shelagh Stephenson

JAN 10, 2014 at 7:30pm

An award winning play where medical ethics are entwined in a detective story, spanning two hundred years. In 1799, on the eve of a new century, an English house buzzes with scientific experiments and furtive romance. An Experiment with an Air Pump catapults us to 1999, present day in the same house where we encounter a world of scientific chaos, genetic engineering and a dark secret that has been buried for over 200 years. The story is one of exploration into past events where humans, art, and science create questions with answers that are beautifully intertwined.

Photograph 51

by Anna Ziegler JAN 11, 2014 at 7:30pm An intriguing portrait of British scientist Rosalind Franklin and her — often overlooked — role in the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure. This complex tale explores how Franklin, a smart, stubborn, and courageous woman, operated in a field dominated by men. A balance of the historical, romantic, and scientific, Photograph 51 is a touching human play of ideas.

Isacc’s Eye by Lucas Hnath Jan 12, 2014 at 7:30pm

To understand light and optics better, young Isaac Newton inserted a long needle “between my eye and the bone, as near to the backside of my eye as I could.” Why take such a risk? Playwright Lucas Hnath re-imagines the contentious, plague-ravaged world Newton inhabited in Isaac’s Eye, exploring the dreams and longings that drove the rural farm boy to become one of the greatest thinkers in modern science.
