DRIVERS BEWARE
Police continue with their crackdown on crashes and crime on the A12
Issue 007
Thursday, 20th November 2014
E
SSEX police were out in force on the A12 yesterday, cracking down on car drivers using mobile phones and monitoring bad driving habits. More than 80 officers, including those from Norfolk and Suffolk forces were assisting in the operation. Members of DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Service Agency) also took part, checking on the
condition and road worthiness of heavy goods vehicles. Using ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras police seized 13 vehicles in the early morning rush hour alone. Immigration Border Force officers along with Revenue & Customs personnel were also in attendance to assist the 24-hour long operation. This major safety campaign
comes at a time when the A12, the major arterial road route through the county, has seen an increase in serious crashes. Between January and October this year, 85 collisions have occured, 19 of them serious with one fatality. Widespread Police patrols were situated on roundabouts and bridges spanning the dual carriageway of this major highway and at other
locations throughout the county including Chelmsford, pulling over drivers caught chatting on mobile phones at the wheel. An automatic penalty for this offence is three points on a driving licence and a fine of £100. They were also on the lookout for those not wearing seatbelts and reckless drivers to advise them on better road awareness in a bid to reduce
collisions and casualties to make the A12 a safer place for all road users. Mountnessing roundabout was one location where police officers were making a visible presence, with marked police cars above the carriageways and officers on foot talking to drivers who had been stopped. They face fines and penalty points and in some cases speed awareness courses.

Centre’s plan to deter thieves now underway
T
O MAKE the Baytree Centre and the High Street a safer place to shop with the Christmas rush about to begin, the centre has an improved radio link in a bid to deter thieves. Intermittent radio reception for security staff operating in the Baytree Shopping Centre has been a problem for some time and will be cured with the erection of a second aerial. Concerned about the possible threat of crime, Brentwood
Chamber of Commerce agreed to pay for the new mast and radio licence to be installed for the Town Link Radio system. The scheme links retailers in the town with each other, Brentwood Police and CCTV operators via handheld radios, so they can exchance information and keep the area a safe place to shop. Retailers hire radios direct from Brentwood Communications who work on behalf of Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and will
soon be upgrading all the radios to maintain an excellent level of service. Councillor David Kendall, who chairs the business and town centre committee said: “It’s been going for a few years now and been a real
success. It has helped apprehend a number of people, particularly those caught shoplifting. It is a very important part of trying to keep the whole High Street and shopping centre a safe place for people to work and shop there.”
RETAIL NEWS
Paving the way for shoppers LEADING up to the Christmas period intu Lakeside has announced some great reasons to shop at the West Thurrock shopping centre. Retailers throughout the store will be offering a host of discounts and promotions to encourage shoppers to grab some pre-Christmas bargains. To help you manage your numerous bags and to allow for some more handsfree browsing, a free Shop & Drop service begins on the same day. Customers can drop off their goods at an instore desk on Level 1 by the Next store and collect them by car from an outside collection point. Night owls can look forward to some late night shopping when it starts on December 1, with weekday opening hours extended from 9am to 11pm.
REALITY TV
Jungle camp is no Sugar Hut for Gemma WELL, that didn’t take long! Gemma Collins has officially left the I’m A Celebrity...jungle. The TOWIE star couldn’t cope with the rigours of the Australian jungle and has clambered back over the rope-bridge to ‘reality’.
From the moment she headed into camp on that emotional helicopter ride, to admitting feeling so hungry her ‘stomach will fall out’ we knew roughing it just isn’t for the glamorous star. The glitz of Strictly is surely more appealing?

Lucy’s debut fragrance takes flight
T
HE WORLD appears to be her oyster, as Lucy Mecklenburgh’s business empire shows no sign of abating. The former reality star now boasts a string of successful ventures including her own clothing store, a successful fitness company and now, following in the footsteps of celebrities from J-Lo to Katie Price, she has this week launched her debut fragrance, Wings. We caught up with Lucy last night on the eve of the perfume’s launch at London’s Dorchester hotel to find out what inspired her new scent and her plans for the New Year. You’ve been very successful with your health and fitness business and boutique, was creating your signature perfume always going to be the next step? It’s something I think every girl dreams of but can’t imagine happening. I remember making perfume as a little girl with my sisters in the garden. We’d get rose petals and put them in cups of water. Results with Lucy (her personal training business) has been created out of lots of hard work and I’ve approached my perfume in the same way. It is definitely one of those projects that was next on my list but I wanted it to be the right time. I’m really proud of it.
meet on the way up will remember you. What’s next for 2015? My first book is out in January published by Penguin. I’m also launching Results Retreat in January, a residential fitness retreat at Celtic Manor in south Wales. The venue is beautiful and the perfect place to make you want to wake up get fit and healthy.
Flying most definitely with Wings, Lucy Mecklenburgh’s business is proving a success
How would you describe your fragrance? It’s fun and fruity and fabulous! It’s the kind of scent that makes you feel happy. Other than your own, what fragrances have you always worn or loved? Dior forever and ever. And I love different scents like Mogador by Keiko.
What business tips do you have for women wanting to follow you in your footsteps? Research research research. You have to know your market and who you are targeting. It’s important to offer something different and something meaningful. Work hard but always keep a smile on your face because people you

ENSURING A BRIGHTER FUTURE Teen sets off on African adventure to help disadvantaged young people seek a better life
A
TEENAGER from Stock is forsaking all the festivities of Christmas and travelling to Zimbabwe to help disadvantaged young people seek a better life. Ellie Massey, 18, will fly out to Africa in December after landing a place on the 12-week International Citizen Service (ICS) scheme which will see her mentor impoverished youngsters on key issues such as sexual health and rights. The former student of Anglo-European School, Ingatestone, who will study International Development at university after a gap year, secured a place on the trip after raising
£1,500 for the youth-led humanitarian charity Restless Development, her nominated charity. Part of the application process was raising an agreed sum for one of eight official charities linked to ICS. Ellie reached her cash total by organising a charity dinner at Nirvana Indian Cuisine in Ingatestone last week for 33 people, receiving donations from friends and family, bag-packing at her local Budgens store and a £300 grant from the Jack Petchey Foundation which supports young people to raise their aspirations and help create innovative schemes. Ellie, an avid swimmer, is awaiting the full itinerary for
the trip in which she will also also provide careers advice to Zimbabweans and offer computer skills. Ellie said: “Volunteering is really worthwhile. To help people who do not have the same information and life chances that we do, it can change lives for the better. “I have wanted to do volunteering for a long time and I realised after a bit of research that the ICS is a really good way to do it. Of course, I will learn a great deal myself out there, meet lots of new people. Hopefully my group can make a really positive difference.” To donate in support of Rested Development visit: justgiving.com/ellie-massey2

TREE OF THE YEAR
Old Knobbley a branch too short
AN ANCIENT oak tree in Mistley, has come second in a national Tree of the Year competition run by nature charity The Woodland Trust. Reputed to be 800-years old, Old Knobbley polled 1,853 (15%) of the 13,000 votes cast by members of the public, over an eight day period earlier this month. Old Knobbley was unfortunately knocked off the top spot by forest veteran Major Oak which can be found in the heart of the Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire. It had 2,317 votes recorded on The Woodland Trust website. Major Oak will now represent England alongside the winning entries from Scotland - Lady Tree and Lonely Tree from Wales, in the European Tree of the Year contest, run by the Environmental Partnership Association which takes place in February, 2015. Woodland Trust chief executive Beccy Speight said: “The number of votes and amount of interest this contest has generated really demonstrates how much people love their trees. We need to translate this passion into action, to ensure all our venerable old trees have the best possible support and protection to prolong their existence in the face of any threats faced - and that’s exactly what our call for a national register of trees of special interest aims to do.”
GLOBAL AWARD
Car dealership wins accolade
ESSEX Nissan dealer Glyn Hopkin has been selected as one of only three in the UK to receive the company’s highest honour - a Nissan Global Award. The dealership in Waterhouse Lane, Chelmsford, was presented with the prestigious award by Jim Wright, Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB) Limited. The award is presented to only 117 dealerships around the world, and recognises excellent sales performance along with outstanding customer care. The award was received by Fraser Cohen, Managing Director at Glyn Hopkin during a special ceremony at the Chelmsford dealership. Fraser said: “I’m really proud that the dealership and its staff have been recognised as one of the best performing in not only the UK, but the world. “Everyone here pushes really hard and our sales figures over the last 12 months or so have proved that, winning this award further celebrates their continued efforts.”

Winning Ale THE Shenfield Operatic Society returned to Brentwood Brewery last weekend to present the winners of the Beer Naming Competition, launched in October, with their new brew. The competition asked for people to name a beer representing Sister Act The Musical, the Operatic Society’s forthcoming production. Two winners were chosen who each entered the same name. Matthew Woods from Brentwood and Maria Coston from Writtle came up with the fantastic ‘Ale Mary’. Both Matthew and Maria will receive 12 bottles of Ale Mary and two tickets to see Sister Act at the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch in February, 2015. has announced it will keep the street lights switched on during the early hours of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The decision reverses the policy where some 80% of lights across the county have been switched off between midnight and 5am. The move has been taken to ensure the safety of people out and about enjoying festive events, such as attending Midnight Mass and New Year’s Eve parties. Councillor Rodney Bass, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “We are happy to do this as a seasonal gesture of goodwill, and at a cost of some £11,000. “The Council has simply chosen to help residents celebrate Christmas and the countdown to 2015.”

something he enjoys. “Chatting to the drivers of the British Touring Car championships at Brands Hatch was a favourite moment of mine,” he says. “Another memorable highlight was interviewing Chigwell snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan after he’d won the 2012 World Snooker Championship and finding out more about his other passion, running.” But its mentoring presenters of the future that Steve is keen to encourage. “The station has such a great range of presenters of all ages, covering all genres. It’s always evolving. There’s nothing Phoenix can’t do!”

BUSINESS SUCCESS
Bake school rises to the occasion
Sweet treats for Children in Need PUDSEY may have held court on the BBC’s Children in Need telethon extravaganza last Friday but a handful of M&Ms also did their bit of fundraising for the children’s charity in Brentwood High Street. This year’s BBC Children in Need appeal raised a truly incredible £36.2 million for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. The seven-hour showbiz marathon included performances by One Direction, S Club 7 and Gareth Malone’s All-Star Choir.

ARY BERRY may be the doyenne of baking, but it seems everyone wants to learn the art of this ageold pastime. From Afternoon Tea treats to Cupcakes and French Bread, all these and more can be part of your new vocabulary when you undertake a baking course at The Delightful Tea Bake School in Great Wakering, Essex. The bake school owned by Sarah Plumb has reason to celebrate after completing a successful first year helping teach a raft of locals how to bake. Since opening in November 2013, Sarah has put all her efforts into making the venture a success. Over the last year, enrolment on her bread and cake making courses has grown gradually, while classes for kids in the holidays have helped entice a younger audience. Alongside the traditional baking classes, Sarah has also linked up with other

NGATESTONE may be known for its quirky village charm but it is also where you can find Cranwell House skin clinic and medispa. Stepping into this light, bright contemporary building with its stripped wood floors and neutral decor you would never have guessed you were inside a historic 250-year old property. Charlotte Nial is owner of this specialist ‘sanctuary’ where you can be pampered with a range of treatments from massage therapies to manicures or, undergo rejuvenating, anti-ageing and non-surgical therapies to help improve your skin such as the hydra facial. Beautiful and with a complexion to die for, it is no surprise that Charlotte has always had a strong interest and passion in skincare from a very young age. “I have always been interested in taking care of my own skin,” Charlotte explains. “About nine years ago following work in beauty salons I decided I really wanted to pursue a career in skincare and worked for well known skincare company cosmecuticals which I thoroughly enjoyed and gained tons of experience. Three years later I set up Cranwell House.” She continues: “I just want to educate the public about how they can take care of and improve their skin health.” Charlotte got the idea for Cranwell House as she wanted a skincare retreat that specialised in skin and medical aesthetics as well as offering beauty and lifestyle therapies. “I grew up in Ingatestone and always wanted to set my business up here. Six years ago I came across a beautiful derelict building and as soon as I set foot inside I could just visualise it as the skin clinic it is today. It has developed immensely going from strength to strength.” Spread over three floors the property envelopes an air of tranquillity throughout. The seven spacious treatment rooms and relaxation lounge are the epitome of calm decked out in earthy tones. Cranwell House also offers some of the best, most hi-tech

treatments on the market. “Our top selling treatment is hydrafacial serum based dermabrasion, the results are
fantastic,” she says. “It’s a lovely treatment to have. It’s massive in the USA and the UK and has a huge celebrity

Charlotte’s top tips for glowing skin
1 USING the correct homecare products is very important to maintain good skin health. I do not recommend cosmetic products - they are full of preservatives oil and fragrance that can irritate and clog the skin.
2 INVEST in a good skin care range and you will see the results in your skin.
Nutrition also plays a vital role in skin health. A well balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis contain many vitamins, minerals and proteins good for skin health.

to offer Soprano.” Charlotte is now hoping the new IPL Photorejuvenation and ReFirme skin tightening treatments will become as popular. “The skincare and medical industry is expanding all
the time and therefore it’s essential to keep up with the latest technology.” Ingatestone may be steeped in olde worlde charm, but Cranwell House offers its clients skincare for the future. Cranwell House Skin and Beauty Clinic 01277 350539/ cranwellhouse.co.uk

EXFOLIATION is very important and the key to youthful radiant skin. It removes dull, dead skin cells and allows deeper penetration of other products and treatments. You should exfoliate your skin with a scrub at least twice week. There are advanced exfoliation treatments like microdermabrasion and skin peels, great for acne, sun damage, anti aging, fine lines and wrinkles and for normal skin that needs a boost.
5 HYDRATING the skin is also a very important step in your skincare routine. Dehydrated skin can lead to fine lines. Dry and dehydrated skin needs more attention but it is vital for all skin types to hydrate their skin daily with a good moisturiser. The skin must also be kept well hydrated internally by drinking plenty of water.

Real Life When Essex man Chris Spencer was faced with a life threatening bone marrow transplant, he decided to row his way back to health, Debbi Marco tells his inspiring story
Epic challenge for
survival “I was lucky as they found me a match by September”
C
HRIS SPENCER is a man full of positivity, despite having life threatening condition in the last 17 years. The 48-year-old from Heybridge was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 32, just months before his wedding to wife, Jo, a teacher. After undergoing a brutal combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy known as total body irradiation, Chris had a successful bone marrow transplant. “The treatment was so powerful it killed more people than it cured,” explains Chris. “It was such a shock as I’d always been so healthy. I got what I thought was flu, but it wouldn’t go away. I was in bed for weeks before I went to the doctor. The blood tests revealed it was cancer.” Chris adds: “It was hard for us, especially as I knew it would leave me infertile. At the time I couldn’t imagine not becoming a father, but we came to terms with not having children and decided to live the best lives possible. The doctors warned me the cancer could come back at any time so we had to make the most of what we had. I knew I had to stay positive.” The couple did that. They bought a house in Sardinia and spent many months there over the years. But then the news they had been dreading came on June 5 last year. “I’d been feeling terrible for a few weeks before,” says Chris, a sports
centre manager. “I was just really tired and getting nose bleeds for no reason. I went back to my specialist, Professor Jamie and he sent me for tests and biopsies, but we both knew it wasn’t good news.” The tests revealed Chris had bone marrow failure and he’d need another bout of chemo followed by a second bone marrow transplant. “I was lucky as they found me a match by September,” explains Chris. “It was from a woman in Germany. Because I’m a white European male I have a 60 per cent chance of finding a match, but for black and Asian people, they only have a 20 per cent chance as there are less donors.” These statistics spurred Chris on through his recovery and he decided his goal would be to raise awareness for Anthony Nolan, the UK's blood cancer charity and bone marrow register. “I’ve always been a keen rower so along with three friends we decided to raise money by rowing 150 miles down the Thames,” says Chris.” The team consisting of Chris’s brother Roger and two friends from his rowing club, Robert Coleman and Dan Bartlett started to train for the gruelling trip, which would see them start in Lechlade, Glouster and finish in Greenwich, London. “We had to row for 14 hours a day for three days straight,” explained Chris. “We set the date for 10 months after my
transplant. It didn’t look good. In June I could barely row 15 minutes and in July I could only row 25 minutes without being exhausted. But as the sponsorship money started rolling in, I started to train harder. Jo wanted me to wait a little bit longer before I attempted the row, but it spurred me on knowing all the money we could raise. I couldn’t let anyone down.” Amazingly in September this year Chris completed his epic journey and has raised over £31,000. “It was so much harder than any of us envisaged,” admitted Chris. “I’m proud of myself though. My system is only 11 months old. My blood type and DNA is still changing over to be the same as the German donor’s.” While Chris has another year of hospital consultations in front of him to see if the transplant has worked, he’s still setting himself goals. “I believe in positive thinking and living life to the full,” says Chris. “I’ll keep living my life and I want to do more fundraising for Anthony Nolan so more people can have the life saving opportunites I have.” To make a donation visit justgiving. com/Greatthamesrow To find out more about Chris’s remarkable story visit his blog chrisspencer416.blogspot.co.uk. 33 WEEKEND
here is only one time of the year that you can frolic around in a novelty jumper, and that is Christmas. It’s as if the big man in the red suit himself has sprinkled some magic and wavered the ultimate fashion faux pas. Here in the U.K, the festive jumper was more prominent with television presenters, Noel Edmonds, Val Doonican and in particular the Country and Western singer Andy Williams all hosting their own one-off Christmas specials. ‘The Andy Williams show’ was the most popular, with distant memories of Andy wearing a white knitted jumper with a Christmas tree on it. Indeed the Christmas jumper competition is growing stronger every year. Charities also use them to send a message out as part of their Christmas campaigns. This year ‘Save the Children’ has created a Christmas jumper day. Celebrities including Made in Chelsea’s Rosie Fortescue Jessica Wright and Mark Wright as well as a whole long list of other celebrities donate their Christmas Jumpers, which you can swap with your own in exchange for a £2 donation to Save the Children. Whether you are wearing one for fun or buying someone else one for fun, there is no mistaking that the Christmas jumper is here to stay and lets face it, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without one! (the Farm’s circus style Big Top) where Santa’s cheery elves meet, greet and accompany you on what is a packed two and a half-hour adventure, which works its way around the farm. All ‘experience’ guests receive a passport which details the magical trail and the various stops enroute which eventually lead to Father Christmas’s house. There’s a page for stamps too which little ones will love collecting and having each one stamped personally by the elves.
Highlights of the Winter Wonderland include a visit to the Elf Theatre where there’s endless magic and games with chief toymaker Biggle and the chance to get up-close to the reindeers at reindeer whisperer, Professor Wigglepop’s stables. He expertly looks after Rudolph and friends for Father Christmas. At Mother ‘Mary’ Christmas’s kitchen children can get stuck into some gingerbread decorating followed by a sing-a-long in her cosy Kitchen. But it’s the
enchanting walk through the Hidden Doorway through the snow covered woodland where Father Christmas keeps his sleigh that paves the way for the short journey ahead to the big man himself. There’s

UZUKI is renowned for producing four-wheeldrive vehicles. One look at its range shows that the Swift, Jimny, SX4 and Vitara models are all equipped with all-wheel-drive capability. Recently added to this range is the SX4 S-Cross, which is the Japanese manufacturers first ‘crossover’ vehicle, and it competes head on with the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti. Available in both two and four-wheel-drive formats, with a 13-model price range from £14,999 to £23,549, it is a good utility vehicle, offering generous interior and boot space matched with good fuel economy/CO2 emissions and driving manners. Trim line-up is SZ3, SZ4, SZ5 and a special fleet/ corporate-themed SZ-T which comes with satellite navigation, DAB radio, rear parking camera and proximity sensors, chrome styling pack and 17-inch alloys. Even the base SZ3 model comes comprehensively equipped with seven airbags,

ESP and tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, air conditioning, heated door mirrors and daytime running lights. Silver protective skid plates and black wheelarch extensions, add to this, giving it a chunky off-roader look. On test was the top-of-therange SZ5 1.6-litre diesel with Suzuki’s ALLGRIP 4WD technology, priced at £23,549. Two engines are available both of 1.6-litre capacity and producing the same 120PS of power – with the diesel
producing a torque figure of 320Nm, almost double that of the petrol. Gearbox choice is either sixspeed manual for the diesel, and on the petrol-engined models either five-speed manual or an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) covering both 2WD and ALLGRIP 4WD models. On the ALLGRIP models, four selectable modes are available: Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock, switchable via a rotary control knob close to the gear lever.

CHRIS MANNING Auto is the standard mode for everyday driving, switching to 4WD if wheel spin is detected. Sport alters the throttle response and engine torque characteristics for peps up performance and will divert up 20 per cent more torque to the rear wheels for optimal handling on twisty roads. Snow, really speaks for itself, and enhances traction on snowy and other slippery surfaces, while Lock goes one step further for more challenging off-road conditions. Inside the SX4 S-Cross is smart and functional. The instrument cluster has clear dials, with a nice blue ring to them and across the centre of the dash is a nice soft touch crosshatch panel, but upper dash plastics are a little hard and scratchy looking, the same goes for the upper door trim. Letting light flood into the cabin is the double, sliding panoramic sunroof. Only fitted to the top specification SZ5 model, it has a one of the largest sunroof opening areas in this category at 560mm (22in). The boot has a wide opening and a false floor panel can be set at two levels, either to
increase load capacity or at its higher level, hide items away securely. Start up the diesel engine and it is certainly not the quietest of oil-burners. A fair amount of diesel clatter is heard at all speeds, but on the plus side the unit is very responsive. Select Sport mode and you can feel the difference straight away as it livens up the car’s performance. I found Sport was best for B-roads and around town for prompt get-aways from traffic lights and roundabouts etc and switched back to Auto on the motorway. Overall fuel consumption on test was 57.4mpg, on a mixture
of motorway and town traffic conditions. Ride is on the firm side but never uncomfortably so, but the seats could be a bit softer. Brakes are responsive with just the right amount of pedal weight and the raised driving position gives a commanding view of the road ahead. Overall the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross is a worthy ‘crossover’ contender. It is cheap to buy and run, with service intervals increased from 9,000 to 12,500. It offers generous equipment levels, good economy and low CO2 emission levels.

MOTORING TEST DRIVE TOYOTA GT86
Toyota make welcome return to sports car fold
I
T has been many years since Toyota produced a true sports car. You have to go back to the Celica which ceased production in 2006 but thankfully that has now been rectified with the Toyota GT86. The 86 number plays a significant part in the car’s theme as it not only pays homage to last front-engined rear-wheel-drive Toyota, the Corolla GT of 1983 which was codenamed AE86, but also the engine has a cylinder size of 86mm plus the chrome-tipped exhaust pipes at the rear are also 86mm in diameter. Developed in collaboration with Subaru (an identical model is the Subaru BRZ) both sets of designers strove to produce a car with three key elements of rear-wheel-drive, no turbocharging and running standard low-profile tyres. Employing Subaru’s legendary flat-four ‘boxer’ engine it gives the GT86 a very low centre of gravity and with a weight distribution of 53:47 front to rear makes for a superb handling sports car which was fine-tuned during development testing on the Nurburgring track. Engine capacity is 2-litre, and matched to Toyota’s D-4S direct injection system produces 200PS which propels the GT86 to a 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds and a CO2 figure of 181 g/km. The only thing missing from the whole equation when starting it up was the familiar ‘‘thrum’’ that the boxer engines from Subaru usually produces. Toyota recently increased the model range from two to six, with a new lower priced Primo model at £22,995, cutting the cost of a new GT86 by £2,115. The classic GT86 remains at the heart of the range. Additional features (compared to the base model Primo specification) include a rear spoiler, keyless entry, push-button start, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, dusk-sensing high intensity discharge headlights, LED daytime running lights and the option of automatic transmission. The new GT86 Aero introduces a striking
Toyota GT86 is a great handling car with leech-like levels of grip body kit, with large rear spoiler and front, side and rear skirts, topped off with a set of 18-inch alloy wheels with an anthracite grey finish. A special edition GT86 Giallo which adds extra style with Giallo Edition black leather seats (heated for the driver and front passenger) and vibrant yellow metallic paintwork. Getting behind the wheel, the dashboard is dominated by a large rev counter which has a digital speedometer reading contained in it (plus a small analogue item to one side) and a steering wheel devoid of any touch buttons on it with the centre console topped by the 6.1in touchscreen

CHRIS MANNING with sat nav/Bluetooth functions etc. Legroom in the rear is very limited and practically makes this a two rather than four seater, but the one-piece rear seat does fold down flat. I have been reliably informed that with them folded there is enough room to accommodate four wheels and tyres and a trolley jack for those track day ventures. The seats are firm but very supportive and I particularly appreciated the soft padding on the transmission tunnel and door panel which acts as excellent knee pads for enthusiastic driving. The ride is very firm, but hey, this is a sports car and spring/damper setting has been set to achieve great handling which it does with leechlike grip.

I do think the engine needs a bit more power. It has to be revved to get the best performance out of it and with its close-ratio six-speed gearbox, needs to be worked hard and won’t win many traffic light Grand Prix awards against similar competitors such as the Audi TT and Nissan 370Z. Fuel economy is really not going to be an issue with customers buying the GT86 and the official figure on the combined cycle is 36.2 mpg. So, it came as a bit of surprise to me as normally real-life figures are lower than this, that on a 300-mile mainly motorway run the on-board computer was showing an average of 42.7 mpg. Perhaps it was because I was driving sedately and not always exploring its power and handling prowess to the full. The Toyota GT86 is a great driver’s car that won’t break the bank. At £22,995 it is keenly priced and my choice would be to go for the 6-speed manual as it is such fun to drive.

LONDON FOOTBALL FOCUS TOTTENHAM. Despite the air of disappointment around N17 manager Pochettino’s reputation remains intact. While there has been a general dissatisfaction with performances, it would be hard to blame the Argentine for struggling to imprint his vision on the team. This is after all the third system many of his players have had to learn in three years. The man needs something that was not afforded by Spurs chairman Levy to his predecessors - time. WEST HAM. Last Wednesday saw the return of Carlos Tevez as Argentina played Croatia at Upton Park. Tevez, who had a starring role in West Ham’s escape from relegation in 2007 came on as a second half substitute in Argentina’s 2-1 win. Manager Sam Allardyce is looking at Fulham defender Daniel Burn as a ready-made replacement for Winston Reid. LEYTON ORIENT. A stoppage time strike from Gill’s forward Cody McDonald sentenced Orient to a 3-2 defeat. O’s boss Mauro Milanese saw Gillingham score all three of their goals from free-kicks and was less than impressed. SOUTHEND. The Shrimpers remedied their recent FA cup exit by beating bottom side Hartlepool 1-0 in their League Two clash. Shrimpers boss Phil Brown was in a buoyant mood: “I thought the scoreline flattered Hartlepool if I’m honest,’’ he exclaimed, gleefully.

SQUASH
Essex duo bow out in Qatar Daryl Selby in yellow and Pete Barker in Doha
B
RENTWOOD squash players Peter Barker and Daryl Selby became the victims of two giant-killing acts at the World Squash Championships in Qatar this week, as the form book was turned upside down. Barker, the world number eight from Hutton, crashed to Australian Cameron Pilley, the world No.20, in a brutal 86-minute second-round encounter, while injury-hit Selby was felled by South African Steve Coppinger. The defeats will come as a blow to the Essex duo who were looking to finish the year on a high, following their medal-winning performances for England at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
Both players were in good form going into the World Championships, with Barker having won the PSA Bluenose Classic in Canada two weeks ago. He beat Selby in the semi-finals before taking on Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rodriguez in the final. But Barker’s hopes in Doha were dashed as the rangy Australian Pilley stepped up through the gears to earn an impressive victory. Pilley looked in control of the contest after racing out to a two-game lead but Barker fought back and took advantage of a string of errors to level the match and force a decider, but it was the Australian who prevailed in a tough physical match.
A
FTER a short break from League action Brentwood travelled to neighbours Romford last Saturday in a must win game. Brentwood, for the first match in a long time were able to field a full strength team, welcoming a host of players back from injury. The visitors scored the first try of the match when great forward play fed the backs. Quick play up front released the ball to Aaron Stanier, who beat his opposite number to score in the corner for an unconverted try. Romford responded with some direct running from their backs which tested the well organised Brentwood defence, marshalled by the fit again John Wylie.

The Romford forwards continued to press and drove into the Brentwood 22 where quick ball saw Romford score in the corner to bring the game back to 5-5. Brentwood were stung into action and they used their forward domination to drive the home team back into their own 22. Excellent work by Jed Roman, James Metcalf and Tom King saw the forwards drive towards the line and quick thinking from fly-half Tom Simpson saw him dive over to give Brentwood the lead going into the half time. The second half saw Brentwood dominate huge passages
of play without crossing the try line. Romford capitalised on the increasing frustration of the Brentwood team and on a rare attack managed to squeeze over in the corner for Romford to score to level the scores 10 all, very much against the run of play. The forwards took the game to Romford from the restart and started to dominate again. Direct running by Sean Phillips, Jon Crisp Kieran Skurr, Lewis Pratley saw Brentwood create the free space for back Aaron Stanier on the wing to run in a try. Tom Simpson converted to put Brentwood 19-10 ahead. The final few minutes saw Brentwood retain possession to secure their first away win of the season.
Old Brentwood stung by three late tries OLD Brentwood started positively against a strong Wanstead side. A long kick off immediately put pressure on the Wanstead ruck which resulted in OB’s turning the ball over. Alex Savage broke on the blindside, setting up Tom Middleton to score his first try of the season. Old Brentwood applied pressure with their backs, enabling fly half Toby Austin to go over in the corner. Wanstead came back immediately, scoring two more tries before the break. The Old Brentwood pack by this time were getting the upper hand in the scrum, driving Wanstead off the ball, set up the first of two tries

for Tom Walker .Toby Austin slotted the conversion to tie the scores. Despite losing Tom Richards to injury, the team were still trying to run the ball. Man of the match George Burnett made a number of telling breaks but Old Brentwood just could not cross the line. Wanstead then ran in three late tries to take the victory.

eopards made it two wins from two in Division One games as they returned from the long trip to Tees Valley Mohawks with an 82-80 victory last Saturday. Lukas Winegarner and Will Ashby led the way with 17 points apiece, the former adding 11 rebounds for a double-double. Dave Ajumobi, Bryon Richards and Matic Zupanc all finished with 12 points, with Ajumobi adding eight boards, and Richards and Zupanc each pulling down three rebounds. The Big Cats were again without Lawrence Brown due to a back injury, with Courtney Van Beest’s shoulder problems also ruling him out, leading to coach Robert Youngblood making another appearance to finish with two points and three boards in six first-half minutes. The sides were locked at 32 at the midway stage of the second half before Mohawks took a 43-42 lead into the locker room at half-time. That lead grew to 54-49 and the home side led 64-41 at the final break before Leopards opened the fourth period on a 13-5 run to take a lead they would never lose and set up a grandstand finish. Zupanc drained a trey with 68 seconds on the clock to put the visitors up by five and then split a pair at the foul line as the Big Cats held off a late rally from the Mohawks to seal the victory 80-82.

Division One
Leopards face arguably their biggest weekend of the season as they travel to Hemel on Saturday evening before Bradford Dragons come to the Brentwood Centre on Sunday. The visit from the Dragons tips off at 4pm and will see Leopards defend the only unbeaten record in Division One against a side who have stuttered after a good start to the season. Before the game young Leopards’ fans will have the chance to be coached by American guard/forward Byron Richards on the court at Brentwood. Further information is available at www. leopardsbasketball.co.uk or by calling 07828 470015. Saturday’s trip to Hemel is effectively a shoot-out for home court advantage in the quarter-final stage of the National Trophy. Both sides have already qualified for the last eight of the competition, with Leopards holding a 3-1 record and hosting Newham Nepturnes at Harlow Leisure Zone in their final group game on November 29.

Bowlers league action
Thrilling finish ends pointless
BRENTWOOD Bowling Club are likely to be fielding two teams in the RBA Triples League next summer. The move was revealed by captain Richard Rose, at the men's section AGM last Sunday. He said: “This means that we have to have 30 bowlers to play every Wednesday but it does also mean that more of our members will get a regular league game.’’ Rose outlined some of the club achievements over the past season, topped by regaining the Morton Trophy. Brentwood were runners-up in the RBA Triples League, put in a satisfactory performance in the Brentwood League and improved in the Clockhouse League which was 'a credit to the enthusiasm of players'. The Ashford Cup final was won by the county’s Group 4 with Brentwood providing three of the six skips Adam Smith, Geoff Byatt and Fred Wasmuth. Smith also played in the Inter Group Knockout, won by Group 4.
LOOKING to turn their season around, and get some much needed points on the board, Brentwood hosted the in-form Ford. Brentwood started confidently making some headway into the visitors half, with some nice movements around the circle. The home team could not convert the pressure into goals as Ford played route-one tactics, forcing many penalty corners. They took the lead from yet another penalty corner, scoring

with a powerful low drag flick. Individual skill and the defence over-committing lead to another well taken Ford goal. The half ended with Brentwood two goals down. They started the second half strongly, quickly halving the deficit, with a finely worked goal from Nick Hull. Ford came straight back at Brentwood from the restart.
A devastating break from the Ford striker left the Brentwood defence in his wake, striking a fine goal to put the visitors 3-1 up. This seemed to spur the home team, with Steven Naven slotting home with a powerful drag flick. Brentwood went in search of equaliser, throwing everything at Ford. The thrilling finish didn’t bring a goal and Brentwood will go away concerned at the lack of finishing from such a strong position.
SOHAM Town Rangers twice came from behind to earn a point against Brentwood Town in a 2-2 draw at The Arena. Brentwood made another quick start as they opened the scoring after just six minutes. A Soham attack was cleared away to Sam Bantick who slipped a neat pass through to Stanley and the striker charged through to score. The visitors soon found their feet and Ollie Bowles was forced to make a smart save to deny Prada’s snapshot, but he was unable to stop Soham getting back on level terms in the 23rd minute. Jack Gardner conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box and Abbs caught the Blues defence napping with a quick pass through to Bridge who was in acres of space inside the box and he slotted the ball home. Eight minutes into the second half, Brentwood restored their lead. McFarlane darted down the right win and found Bantick who shot from the edge of the box. The keeper was unable to hold onto the strike and Milner was on hand to tuck the ball away. However, ten minutes later Soham drew level again, this time from the penalty spot after skipper Martyn Stokes was adjudged to have fouled Prada inside the box.
n Warley Park golf club were defeated with their planning application to build a driving range on the club property. The council narrowly voted six against with five for on the application for construction of a nine-bay, 36-metre long driving range with floodlights. The size of the development and its impact on the openness of Green Belt land were the main reasons for objections.

lorida is one of the world’s favourite holiday destinations and it’s easy to see why. It has a fantastic climate, is blessed with an array of world-renowned natural and manmade attractions and it has great connectivity for holidaymakers all over the world. The number and quality of things to do is constantly on the up in Florida. Philip Button, managing director of specialist property investment firm Brookes & Co, is excited about Merlin Entertainment’s I-Drive 360 project, which will feature a Madame Tussaud’s, London Eye-style wheel and aquarium when it opens in 2015. “I’m lucky enough to be able to visit Orlando regularly due to my work commitments, but I still take time out to go there with family members too,” he says. “And with the new Merlin complex coming online next summer, it looks like Orlando’s popularity is unlikely to wane anytime soon.” With so much to offer visitors, Florida is understandably high on the wish-list of both residential property buyers looking for a holiday home, and investors hoping to profit from the burgeoning tourism industry. Among the new developments to interest buyers is The Club at Sunset Lake, a brand new gated development in the heart of central Florida, situated close to all major amenities. The Club boasts luxurious facilities including
an exclusive clubhouse and swimming pool, fitness centre and spa, sports courts and cycle paths, and a lake front park and picnic area, making the most of the beautiful location. The two-, three- and four-bedroom properties provide plenty of space, with the larger properties also boasting garages. The specification makes for an ideal lifestyle property or alternatively, there is the
opportunity to get a five-year rental guarantee with a 6% p.a. net return. Two-bedroom properties at The Club at Sunset Lake are priced from £96,950, with threebedroom property types priced from £118,700 and four-bedroom properties starting from £137,450.
