TOURISM ON TRACK The Tour de France boosted Essex tourism

Ingatestone Hall, one of the county’s historic treasures that is open to the public

Issue 010

Thursday, 11th December 2014

A

N ESSEX councillor has hailed the tourism industry as a key contributor to the boost to the county’s economy, at the annual conference for Visit Essex, the county’s official tourism organisation. Speaking at the conference held in Southend, Councillor Bentley, the Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure said: “Essex

County Council recognises that tourism is an important industry. It is worth £3 billion to the economy. We look forward to taking advantage of future opportunities to work with partners to promote Essex as a place to visit.” His comments come at the end of the year in which billions of people watched the Tour de France roll through Essex, which resulted in a

multi-million pound economic boost, according to a report published recently. The world’s largest annual sporting event passed through the county in Stage Three of the race from Cambridge to London in July this year. The report examining the economic and social impact of hosting the Tour de France, reveals that it generated the UK £130 million, with Essex and

Cambridgeshire sharing £10.5 million. About 700,000 spectators lined the route in Essex and Cambridge, flocking to key viewing points including Finchingfield, Great Waltham, Saffron Walden and Epping Forest. Television images of the race were beamed across the globe. Visit Essex Chairman George Kieffer said: “Our membership

now exceeds 330, the highest total since it was set-up. This is clearly confirmation that the industry values what Visit Essex is doing and appreciates the support given by Essex County Council and the other local authorities.” Mr Kieffer also praised other successful events like the Maldon Mud Race, Essex Country show and Live Local Love Local.

DART CHARGE UPDATE

Kendall poised Payzone problems for Dartford Crossing causing drivers concern to fight for seat

R

ECENT changes at the Dartford Crossing to create a ‘free flow’ traffic system are causing problems for Essex drivers. Those wanting to pay the £2.50 (per crossing) charge in advance, (you must pay by midnight on the day after you cross or face a fine), who do not have either an internet connection or mobile phone, haven’t been able to use the supposedly ‘quick and easy’ Payzone method of payment available in thousands of shops across the country.

With no cash payments allowed, alternatives are either by post or at the Payzone terminals in retail outlets such as newsagents and off licences. Many Brentwood residents have contacted Made in Essex as they have been unable to pay the crossing charge in local Payzone locations. Conducting a swift telephone survey, we found that only one shop in the Brentwood area Worrows Newsagent in Ongar Road, from the 10

listed on the Payzone website could actually take payment. Two had terminals that were not working properly, a similar number said they did not have the service yet available, while five places contacted received no reply. For more information on the new system call 0300 300 0120 or to locate your nearest Payzone terminal visit payzone.co.uk.

THE local Liberal Democrats have selected Councillor and Campaigner David Kendall to take on Eric Pickles for the Brentwood & Ongar seat in the General Election next May. This will be the third time that Kendall, who has been a Brentwood Borough Councillor for 23 years and an Essex County Councillor for five years, has contested the seat having finished second in 2010. Residents are hoping he continues campaigning for issues that really matter. He has been involved with numerous projects over the years including fighting to save School Crossing Patrols in Brentwood and across Essex and a better deal for rail and bus users across the constituency. Kendall said: “I am delighted to have been selected to fight the Brentwood & Ongar seat. I want to take my years of experience and be a champion for all the residents of Brentwood & Ongar at Westminster.”

Cut in stamp duty bonus for buyers The Orwell Private Cardiothoracic Unit

AN EARLY Christmas present for home buyers has come in the form in the cut of stamp duty, which will benefit around 98% of people who pay it. The Government announced new rules, which came into effect on December 4, and will see buyers only having to pay the rate of tax on the part of the property price. So for a £275,000 property (the price of an average family home) you will pay nothing for

the first £125,000 and 2% on the remaining £150,000. This works out at a saving of £4,500 compared to the previous system. Martin Gibbon, group director of Balgores Property Group explained: “The change to stamp duty is great news for home movers, especially first time buyers who will make significant savings on securing their first home. SPREADING THE WORD Essex mother supports Diabetes UK to help promote awareness of the danger signs of the condition

M

ICHAELA Bellingham from Earls Colne, near Braintree, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was just 13-years old. The mother of six is supporting Diabetes UK in spreading the word about the symptoms and the importance of seeking medical help quickly. Michaela first noticed something was wrong when her weight fell to just four and a half stone, she was so tired she could barely walk

up the stairs and was drinking large quantities of Coca Cola. But she tried to hide her symptoms from her Mum and it was only when she collapsed and slipped into a coma that she was rushed to hospital and Type 1 diabetes was diagnosed. Michaela explains: “I don’t know why I didn’t tell my Mum about how ill I was feeling, but it was almost too late when I collapsed. At hospital they said it was 50/50 that I

would survive. “Now I know that I had all of the four tell-tale signs of Type 1 diabetes. With six children I’m now very conscious of what to look out for. It is so important that people recognise the danger signs.” Diabetes UK’s campaign highlights the four symptoms to look out for: toilet, tired, thirsty and thinner, after a new survey revealed that one in six parents failed to recognise them. Sharon Roberts, eastern regional manager for Diabetes UK, said: “At the moment there are too many children who are not diagnosed until they are seriously ill, and this will continue until there is much better understanding of the symptoms of Type 1.”

Chelmsford stylists get a cut of the X Factor They’ve styled some of the X Factor stars for the past four years, now they are in the spotlight

Z

OE and Nathan Jasztal of Silhouette du Barry, Chelmsford, have had another brilliant year working for Hairdresser-inresidence for the X Factor Jamie Stevens and his team styling the contestants hair for the show. It is the husband and wife’s fourth year in the X Factor hair room and have had some amazing experiences during that time. “It’s such a great buzz working on live television and all the last minute tweaks and changes keep us on our toes,” explains Zoe. “Also it’s great to see the hairstyles we create on national television for everyone to see. For us working with the contestants it’s about bringing out their confidence so that if they look and feel great they will deliver a great performance, the same can be said for us working in the salon with our clients, it’s about bringing out that same confidence, by making someone’s hair look individually great.” Zoe and Nathan are thrilled that Essex has played such a big part in the show over the last few years helping to discover stars such as Olly Murs, now a huge chart success and Rylan Clark who has since launched a career as a presenter. Lauren Platt, 17, voted off last week has also demonstrated her immense talent at such a young age. And, who could ever forget Stevie Ritchie! Zoe and Nathan have a great time working for Jamie Stevens, they have even been able to have Style Director Lena, and Stylists Clare Louise and Samantha from their salon Silhouette du Bary come and work on the X Factor.

“For us as creative hairdressers it’s important to have variation in our work whilst giving opportunities to our team to keep them fresh and constantly learning. Also it keeps us and our salon team able to offer our clients a unique experience with their creative knowledge,” says Nathan. When they are not working on television or at fashion shows, Zoe and Nathan are the Artistic Directors at Silhouette du Barry. “We have an amazing team at the salon and are thrilled that we have the opportunity to work for and alongside the hairdressing industries biggest stars.” For more information on Silhouette du Barry visit sdbhair.co.uk or follow them on Facebook Silhouette du Barry. Reverend’s Friday night songs of praise

F

Revd. Patrick Sherring is a popular presenter on Phoenix

RIDAY night listeners to Phoenix FM can expect an eclectic mixture of contemporary music, classic pop, even a little bit of country music and jazz. Running the show is Reverend Patrick Sherring who is also Rector of both Ingatestone & Fryerning Parish Churches. He is highly regarded in the community and has been involved with everything from helping to organise the annual Victorian Evening in Ingatestone to the building of the War Memorial. Patrick has been broadcasting for Phoenix since June 2011 and his Friday Night Extra show is very popular with his parishioners. “I grew up listening to pirate radio stations and in the late 1980s became involved in hospital radio for Radio Enfield in North London where I did live football commentaries from White Hart Lane.” Whilst training for the Ministery, radio took a bit of a backseat for Patrick, however Phoenix FM contacted him to do a five minute slot each week on the Season of Lent and a few years later asked him if he’d like to present his own programme. He was back in a flash. “I had obviously done radio in the past and loved it,” explains Patrick,“ and in

2011 I returned to present my own show.” He certainly enjoys the appeal of local radio and chatting to those wanting to make Brentwood and the surrounding area a better place. “I love doing lots of local based things including interviewing people to find out what is going on in the community. I’ve welcomed all sorts of people on the show from pupils at both Ingatestone Junior School and Mountnessing Primary School (pictured left with Patrick) even people from the Brentwood Food Bank who provide emergency food and support to people in crisis in the UK.” When Patrick’s has guests on the show he always asks them to choose three favourite songs to play on air. “One guest who springs to mind is the Bishop of Plumb’s Chelmsford who appeared on the showSarah in January this year,” business booming says Patrick. “He chose 1970s punk rock, a is rather unusual choice I thought.” Patrick describes his show as ‘good conversation combined with relaxing music for the evening’. So how does he like to come across on the radio? “I try to be me offering a mix of informative, humorous and friendly chat.” With his influences including radio icons such as Tony Blackburn and Kenny Everett to Radio 4’s John Humphreys - he’s certainly got the best attributes of all three. Tune in to Patrick Fridays 8pm-10pm on Phoenix FM 98.0. He also has a special Boxing Day morning show on December 26, from 10am to 1pm.

ER appearance on TOWIE may be a distant memory but Amy Childs is now a star in her own right with her signature clothing and beauty range. The beauty therapist and model is a familiar face on the celebrity circuit and has a growing popularity of fans. Renowned for her perfect pout and immaculate style, Amy’s glamorous new party dress and festive wear collection has the wow factor as CHARLOTTE CIVIL discovers

them. This collection is not just about the festive holidays it’s about making women look and feel good .

How do you describe your party dress/festive wear range? I always try and design a range based not just on trends, but on the different women who will wear

Which celebrities can do the party wear look well? I always look at other celebrities’ style. There are some like Alexa Chung and Jessie J that look

What are your inspirations? I’m always looking at trends – what’s new, what looks good, I look at high street all the way up to the catwalk. This season is obviously about parties, family and the festive season so that is reflected in the designs. I’ve got a bit of sparkle, some classic looks, LBDs and some lovely long gowns – there’s something for every occasion this season can throw at you.

amazing. At the moment I’m loving Cheryl Cole’s style. She’s so diverse and really knows how to show off both her figure and personality in whatever she wears, I think that’s really important. What is your favourite party wear look? It’s Christmas so it really is the time to go all out – when else can you do that? I love a bit of sparkle, there’s some amazing statement dresses in my party wear range like Belinda claret (a sequin pencil dress). It’s such an amazing colour and the great thing about wearing a statement sparkly dress – you don’t have to accessorize. Do you have a favourite dress? That’s so hard I design them all

so I do really love them all, even the ones that aren’t my usual style but are following fashion trends. I would have to say my favourite for Christmas would be my Kelly dress – it’s such a flattering fit it would definitely be forgiving post-Christmas eating! For New Year’s though I would have to say Pandora champagne, it is the most gorgeous dress and I cannot wait to wear it. ACC shoppers agree as we’ve already restocked it! I’ll probably rock up to my party and someone else will also be wearing it [laughs]. Would you always dress up a look with accessories? Accessories can make a look but I also think sometimes a dress or an outfit should speak for itself. Sometimes all you need is

a great pair of heels and a nice and simple clutch bag. Statement necklaces with a high neckline is a great look but you have to know when to go for a simpler look – too much isn’t good. What are you top tips for looking good? I always say that you look great when you feel great. So if that means treating yourself to a blow-dry or buying a dress that makes you feel confident, then that will reflect on how others think you look. It’s nice to get your hair done, nails done and a tan – it always makes me feel great. I have the odd facial too and I’ve had some 3D Lipo treatments recently in the lead up to Christmas as it sculpts my body. It’s always nice to look and feel your best!

How do you prepare for a night out? I always get the girls round before a night out so we can get ready together. I love having a nice glass of wine or bubbly while we get ready – and a few nibbles. How will you be celebrating Christmas and New Year? I am looking forward to spending time with my family this Christmas. I’m actually having everyone round mine for the first time so it’s going to be scary doing all the cooking but I’ll have my mum there to help. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing yet for New Year but I’m really looking forward to it. Amy’s full collection is exclusively available online at amychildsofficial.co.uk

NE of the best things about the holiday season is being able to relax and have some much deserved down time. It is also apparently the one acceptable time of the year when you can ‘ lay low like broccoli’ and veg out in the comfort of your home during the day, wrapped in a blanket or your favourite PJs with a copy of the Christmas telly guide without feeling the slightest bit guilty. Mark O’Connor gives us his essential guide to the best Loungewear. The retail phenomena that has become known as loungewear has seen the traditional lingerie and nightwear departments grow exponentially in most high street stores over the last few years. Piggybacking on our obsession with looking good, even when we’re safely tucked up in the privacy of our own homes. There are now racks and racks of stylish, contemporary and comfortable designs to choose from.

A A A

Loungewear encompasses a wide spectrum of luxury feel-goods from cashmere wraps and two-piece sets to lambswool socks, brush-cotton pyjamas and merino wool twin-sets. Cashmere brands Cocoa Cashmere and newly launched website Union Red offer luxury scarves and knitwear. The long night-gown and night cap as depicted by Scrooge in Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol is perhaps the most earliest form of loungewear and dates back to 1824, but it wasn’t until the return from the Empire that the Pyjama became the nightwear of choice. Pyjamas or pajamas as they were referred to country were taken from influences in Persian and Indian custom, this pant and shirt combination for sleep of loungewear was more accessible to both male and female. The loose fitting drawstring pants are today paired with all sorts of tops, scarves, gloves and beanies making it an ideal mix and match, silhouetting to accommodate our modern lifestyle and aesthetic.

Goodwill to all things…

...including turkeys

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan you can still look forward to the best Christmas ever, says Karin Ridgers

With an estimated four million vegetarians and vegans in the UK it is a huge growing trend and us non-meat eaters all just want to enjoy our Christmas like anyone else – minus the bird. There are many super products available. V Bites is a completely vegan range that bring out seasonal specials that everyone will enjoy veggie or not. Firm favourites like sausage rolls and even meat and dairy free “bacon and cheese” bites will really impress your non-meat eating guests. Vegusto is available online and is an award winning brand from Switzerland – and we know how much the Swiss love their cheese. Again all vegan made with natural spring water from their lake, this stunning range of meat free meats and dairy free cheeses has won many awards despite only being in the UK about two years. When out shopping do read the labels! I wouldn’t eat something if I don’t read the label and this really should be a habit we all pick up. Avoid ingredients such as cochineal (squashed beetles), gelatin (the boiled bones tendons, ligaments and skin of dead animals). Whey powder if often

avoided as it could be from cheese that isn’t vegetarian (no not all cheese is vegetarian – check the labels!) Research online and search for good vegan

Quick Veggie Christmas Tips…. Hosts - pick up the phone and talk to your veggie guests – they will be thrilled to hear that you care enough to call them. Find out what they do and don’t eat and if they offer to bring something then take them up on the idea and perhaps suggest to bring enough so everyone can try their meat free delights. Be warned – the food is usually quite fantastic. Check out your local health food stores and talk to the managers – see what they

suggest for your guests. If you have a veggie guest coming for Christmas dinner make sure that the vegetables and roast potatoes are cooked separately from the meat. Gravy can easily be made without animal products. Maybe ask everyone to bring something veggie friendly to share so they don’t feel like the odd one out. There are lots of tasty meat free roasts so the veggie Christmas dinner could look just like the traditional roast – Many people just love stuffing (not from inside a

The perfect companion Prawn Cocktail Starter

William Chase Rose Cotes du Provence, France £14.99

William Chase Rose is an off dry Cote du Provence Rose which has a touch of sweetness to it which compliments the thousand island sauce perfectly. This wine is a crisp, fresh and fruity rosé, boasting delicious notes of white peach and grapefruit. There is enough acidity for the wine to cut through the richness of the sauce. At the same time it is light enough not to overpower the flavour of the prawns. If you are looking for a top end Rosé which captures the authenticity of Provence then this is for you. It is presented in a striking bottle with a glass stopper and offers great value for money at this price.

Turkey with all the trimmings

Château des Jacques – Bourgogne Burgundy, France £14.99

There is nothing more traditional than Turkey for Christmas dinner. It’s the perfect time to open a decent bottle of Burgundy, and despite what many may think, it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Château des Jacques Bourgogne is a splendid single vineyard Burgundy (Chardonnay). This wine has been barrel fermented and aged in oak, giving It a rich,

Make sure you pair your Christmas dinner with wines that will complement each course. The Shenfield Wine Company’s Nish Patel gives us his expert take on the perfect accompaniment for a festive feast.

toasty and creamy nose. While the palate is smooth peachy and balanced. It has all the elements to cope with Christmas dinner, Turkey and the array of flavours from brussel sprouts, chestnuts and cranberry sauce. Many of my customers trade up at Christmas but to be honest this is an absolute bargain, you don’t need to spend £30-£40 on Burgundy.

Traditional Christmas Pudding Dandelion Vineyards Legacy of Australia Pedro Ximenez X0 South Australia £16.99

Christmas is the one time in the year when our shelves are stocked with mountains of Mackinsons Stout and Barley wine for the obligatory Christmas pudding. Most of our customers use one or the other but I have a special few who like to use both and they swear by it.

Dandelion Vineyards Legacy of Australia Pedro Ximenez X0 is also very special. I’m a great fan of pudding wines and all those who taste them are surprised at how good they really are. This wine has been blended and bottled by hand without any fining or filtration and it is a blend of wines aged for up to 30years. Although Pedro Ximenez is strictly speaking a sherry grape variety, this is a pudding wine. You can smell the age and class of this wine with pecan nuts, figs, toffee and crème brulee. On the palate you get sweet and rich, with an aged orange peel and honey marmalade middle with candied fruit, citrus and apricot, which compliments all the fruit & nutty flavours of the Christmas pudding. It has a drying finish thanks to its extremely complex and fresh nature and an almost electric, piecing intensity. It can

also be served moderately chilled as an aperitif. Present this and everyone around the table will want to know where you bought it

A little background on Nish: I set up The Shenfield Wine Co. eight years ago with lots of enthusiasm and energy when I decided that being a TV cameraman for ITV was no longer for me. I knew I wanted to start my own business but didn’t know what. When Unwins went bust the opportunity to take on the shop in Shenfield came up and I took it. I knew nothing about wine. I spent the next three years learning a tremendous amount from suppliers, tastings, books and lots of people. We then grew and grew. We are old fashioned in as we stock most things people require weather its wine, whisky, port, champagne or beer, at most price points. Not everyone can afford to drink Chablis on a Monday night. If you’re looking for that single bottle of something special or hard to find we will endeavour to find it for you. We specialise in a number of areas. For example we stock nearly 200 whiskies including rare malts from around the world including Taiwan, and we have customers travel a great distance for our Cuban cigars. As for the wine, well we taste nearly everything we stock so we know exactly what it tastes like and what’s not written on the label. We make sure you can taste the price and that you never have to drink a bad wine.

Thai Food from our land to yours Chef Meechok Duanpen, owner and manager of newly opened Thai Boulevard Restaurant in South Street has brought a little piece of Thailand to Brentwood

T

UCKED away just off Brentwood High Street is a 'secret culinary gem', as described by one happy customer. Chef Meechok Duanpen is the owner and manager of Thai Boulevard Restaurant in South Street. The experienced Thai chef first came to England in 2001 when he was hired from Thailand to manage the former Thai Orchid Restaurant, the very same restaurant he now owns under its new name. His experience is deeply rooted to back home in Ratchaburi, Thailand, renowned for its famous floating market. He grew up with a family who sold Thai food in their small shop to both locals and tourists and has always been very

passionate about his homeland. Chef Meechok wants the people of Brentwood and its neighbouring towns to experience authentic Thai cuisine combined with a relaxed, laid back dining experience. Memories of Thai locals strolling along beautiful flower gardens, enjoying their gorgeous spicy food under the shade of the trees led to the inspiration behind the restaurant's name 'Thai Boulevard'. Meechok wants to bring a little piece of Thailand to England, the country that has kindly adopted him and his family. The decor and feel of the restaurant is a nod to his heritage with everything from paintings and ornaments to Thailand's national flag proudly

placed in the doorway. All he desires, is the magic wand of Harry Potter to bring the warm Thai weather to Brentwood. But for now he's more than happy for customers to simply sit back, relax and enjoy his famous Thai green curry, his warm and spicy Thai Tom Yum soup with prawn or chicken, leaving you feeling fabulous and warm just like in Thailand - the Land of Smiles.

Gift Wrapping Made Easy So you’ve bought the perfect gift, but wrapping isn’t your forte. Follow these top tips and your presents will look fantastic. 1. Choose the right paper. A medium-weight gift wrap ideally rather than a thin inexpensive roll that can crumple and tear easily. Invest in some good old-fashioned brown paper as its cheap and you can then decorate the blank canvas to your heart’s content. Use twine, feathers or fabric instead of ribbons for that more authentic look 2. Put the gift in a box if it isn’t in one already. This will help you when wrapping it.

Stuff of Dreams (stuffofdreams. com), £23

3. Always check there is enough paper to cover a box. To check your paper is long enough, cut a small strip from the edge of the full length of paper and wrap it around your box. If the edges overlap you have enough paper. Don’t forget the sides! To measure the paper for the sides place your box on the gift wrap and lift the side of the paper to match the height of your box before cutting the paper to size. 4. To ensure a professional finish to your box

shaped gifts, take your finger and thumb and make crease marks along each edge of the present to create clean smooth lines. 5. Add a band of paper to decorate a plain bow. Secure the ends in place with tape and cover with a strip of ribbon tied in a bow. 6. If you have tons of presents to label the Brother-P-Touch, available from Amazon is a handy accessory. The handheld machine prints sticky labels so you can get what can sometimes be a laborious task done quickly and easy. £28, amazon.co.uk.

Always a dame RATRTRTRQTQ

Richard Webber goes back stage for a chat with panto’s most popular star, Christoper Biggins

O

VER the coming weeks, cries of “He’s behind you!” and “Oh no, he’s not…oh yes, he is” will be ringing out in theatres across Britain because it’s panto season again. Making his debut at Southend’s Cliffs Pavilion this year is ever-popular Christopher Biggins, who’s playing Mrs Smee in Peter Pan alongside David Hasselhoff. Although it’s Christopher’s first panto at Southend’s Cliffs Pavilion, he’s appeared at the theatre many times. “It’s a lovely theatre in a great location, surrounded by sea and delicious fish and chips!” Christopher, 65, enjoys visiting Southend. “I love the place, it’s fun and the audiences are always wonderful. Nothing beats strolling along the seafront breathing in the fresh sea air. “Mind you, I won’t have much chance to explore the promenade this time because I’ll reach the theatre about midday and won’t leave until 10pm because there’s a matinee and evening performance. In between, I keep my make-up on and sit quietly in my dressing room, take a nap and eat. So it’s full-on.” One of the nation’s favourite pantomime stars, he has played Dame for nearly 40 years and has no plans to slow down. “I love pantomime. It’s hard work but great fun” Christopher admits, however, that he took some persuading to play Dame for the first time in Mother Goose at Darlington. “I was insulted when first asked,” he says, smiling. “I was about 24 and all the Dames I’d seen were elderly. I regarded myself as a straight actor, having appeared in shows like I, Claudius and Poldark. Eventually, he gave in and has never looked back. “The money being offered kept going up. When they suggested £1,000 a week, I knew I’d better do it. It was a huge sum – especially as we’re talking nearly four decades ago when the top ticket price was one and six!” Christopher isn’t surprised panto remains popular. “It’s fantastic family entertainment. You can enjoy two and a half hours of unadulterated fun while not worrying about what’s going on in the world – and, my goodness, there are some terrible things happening. Escaping into a world of fantasy, full of laughter and fun, is wonderful.” With another busy festive period on the cards, Christopher will make the most of Christmas Day, his only day off. “Every year, I go to my godchildren’s parents in Oxford to enjoy a very traditional Christmas. It’s a lovely occasion.” Although Christopher’s C.V. contains a healthy list of TV credits, it’s for his role as

living off it. Despite being seven years ago, people still remember it with great fondness.” Like millions of other people, Christopher – whose unfulfilled ambition is to direct a movie – is enjoying the 2014 series which finished this week and can empathise

Lukewarm in Seventies’ sitcom Porridge – which attracted audiences up to 20 million – that made his name. He says: “I can’t believe it’s 40 years since the first episode. Even now, I’m stopped in the street by people eager to talk about Porridge. It was great family entertainment and remains as popular as ever.” More recently, being crowned King of the Jungle in the 2007 season of I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! gave the Oldham-born actor’s career a major boost. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and I’m still

Christopher Biggins as Mrs Smee in Peter Pan

with the contestants’ ordeals. Reflecting on his time in the Australian jungle, he rates having to sleep with rats in a cave for 12 hours among his worst nightmares. “Being put in a container with 200 spiders wasn’t that great either!” When he’s not travelling the world or strutting his stuff in panto, Christopher loves nothing more than relaxing at his Hackney home with partner Neil Sinclair, who’s an air steward with BA. “We met in a Glasgow club. It didn’t work out then but some years later we met again and everything clicked – we’ve been together 21 years.” They share similar interests. “We love socialising, eating out, travelling, watching films and going to the theatre.” So, will Neil be in the Cliffs Pavilion audience this Christmas to watch Peter Pan, I wonder? “He’ll be there, he can’t get out of that, I’m afraid,” laughs Christopher. Peter Pan at the Cliffs Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea from December 13 to January 11. To book visit southendtheatres. org.uk or call 01702 351135.

FOCUS ON

Lorraine’s School of Dancing...

Is strictly lots of fun

F

OR more than 10 years, Lorraine’s School of Dancing in Pilgrims Hatch has unleashed the Billy Elliot in many aspiring children and adults wanting to dance. Offering a range of classes from ballet, tap, modern and jazz for pre-schoolers aged two to 18 year-old students, the school is the creation and hard work of Principal Lorraine Hornsey. Ex-professional Lorraine learnt to dance at the Bush Davies School of Dance in Romford where she qualified in ballet, tap and modern jazz. She performed in a wealth of shows including

GET I N TOUCH

pantomimes and cabarets in the West End before taking her talent abroad to perform and worked as a choreographer. When she returned to the UK she taught for various dance and stage schools before deciding on opening her own. “I was keen to open a school that would be fun and friendly, as well as offering the best tuition,” she explains. “That was the way I was taught. I didn’t want this to be a stage school, but a close-knit fun and friendly group where the children remain friends for years.” Many of the children in

question have also gone onto star in various stage shows and theatrical productions over the years around the county. “Recently four children successfully auditioned for the Christmas pantomime Sleeping Beauty which is currently showing at the Queen’s Theatre, Romford; Holly Marie Davenport, Lewis Biddle, Julia Aubrey and Samantha Pain. Holly Marie has also performed in the West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical,” Lorraine says proudly. The school puts together a yearly show at the Thameside Theatre in Grays

in which all the pupils perform. Productions have included Mary Poppins, Grease and Hairspray. The next show in June next year, is their own version of Bugsy Malone. It’s Lorraine’s love of dancing and strong work ethic that has made the school a success and

she is keen to encourage youngsters to come along and try a class. “Dance classes help to develop confidence, encourage working with others, help with discipline and self-control but most importantly they are fun and keep you fit!” That said you can’t not give it a go!

MOTORING ME AND MY CAR GRAHAM MARTIN: PONTIAC GTO

American muscle rules for Graham F

OR more than 40 years, Graham Martin has been the proud owner of a 1965 Pontiac GTO, which he bought in 1973 for the princely sum of £270. One of the American ‘muscle cars’ which took humdrum saloon cars and shoehorned in massive engines to appeal to the young generation in 1960s America, they became hot property and the Pontiac GTO, the brainchild of John DeLorean, competed with the likes of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger. Graham, 70-years young from Billericay, fell in love with American cars at a tender age. As a 17-year-old living in Romford, he spotted a Ford Model T Hot Rod and this rare siting in 1960s England was enough to cement his enthusiasm in autos from Across the Pond. When Graham, a retired BT engineer, bought the Pontiac, it had recently been resprayed, so he concentrated upgrading the mechanical parts, and over the next 10 years replaced the antiquated drum brakes for servo-powered discs, fitted power steering and changed the four-speed-gearbox to a more efficient five-speed item. In 1999 the GTO was starting to show its age and full restoration took place, with a bare metal respray including

replacement of some rusted panels and the interior was completely re-upholstered. Two years ago a major change took place when it was discovered that the engine block was cracked. Graham managed to source a replacement from America, at a cost of over £4,000. This new engine saw an increase in size of the V8 to 7.6-litres producing 502bhp and can hustle the GTO to a 0-60 time of around four seconds. Over the years Graham reckons he has spent in excess of £34,000, but as he points out,

that is less than £1,000 per year spent and estimates the car is now worth around £40,000. He takes the GTO to around a dozen shows a year and even in winter if it is a sunny day, will take it out for spin. It has won around 20 cups at classic and American car shows, plus been the picture on the front cover of Power Cars illustrated book and featured in Classic American magazine. What does it do to gallon I asked Graham. ‘’Depends how you drive it,’’ came the reply. ‘’Have fun with it and it is around 8mpg, but on a long run it can average around 20mpg.’’ ‘’It has become so much a part of my life over the last 40 years that I could never think of selling it,’’ he added.

Replaced two years ago, the gleaming V8 engine is now 7.6-litres and produces over 500 brake horse power.

Top award for young Essex journalist ESSEX-born Stephen Kilbey has won a prestigious award from the Guild of Motoring Writers. The 20-year-old from Woodford was presented with the Sir William Lyons Award (founder of Jaguar), which recognises promising young talented writers working in the motoring/motorsport media. Stephen has been working for dailysportscar.com website,

reporting on the Le Mans 24 hour race and European Le Mans series. There was a high profile announcement on stage for Stephen, too – his prize, for the first time, would include a place on the 2015 Mille Miglia. This classic 1,000-mile Italian road event travels from Brescia to Rome and back again over a four day period in May.

MOTORING

Price is right for big hybrid

U

NTIL now, every other plug-in hybrid car currently on sale have always cost significantly more to buy than its internal combustion-engined counterpart. But with the introduction of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the Japanese manufacturers has thrown the rule book out of the window as this plug-in hybrid costs the same as its diesel cousin. At £28,249 (including £5,000 Government grant), it represents excellent value for money, as it is a big five-seater SUV, with four-wheel-drive and plenty of standard equipment to keep the modern-day motorists more than happy. Engine is a 2.0-litre fourcylinder petrol, with inverter and charger at the front, and a 12kWh battery pack under the floor and two 60kw electric motors permanently driving each end of the car, with an estimated range of 32 miles on battery power alone. This is a somewhat generous figure, as I found on my early

By

CHRIS MANNING morning commute to Brentwood (with lights, wipers and heater on etc) it only managed 21 miles before the petrol engine fired up to assist. I had fully charged the battery the night before on my domestic 13amp supply, and taking a meter reading before and after, used 24 units at a cost of 12.8p per unit, so it cost me £3.07 over the five hour recharge time. The Outlander PHEV, which as you might have guessed stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, can use power sources in different ways while on the move. In Series Hybrid Mode, the petrol engine acts as a generator supplying electric power to the motors when the battery is drained, or Parallel Hybrid Mode when the vehicle is at high speed, the petrol engine is providing most of the motive power and for quick acceleration the electric motors assist.

A regenerative braking system also recharges on the move. Similar to engine braking on traditional vehicles, the motors act as generators when the accelerator is released and the intensity can be increased through six levels using the steering column-mounted paddles. Keeping the driver informed on what is happening is a graphic display unit in the centre of the instrument binnacle showing what is powering the wheels, where charge is coming from and is repeated in more elaborate form on the dashboard via the 7in colour display screen. Two buttons down by the gear lever can either charge the battery via the petrol engine immediately, or save for use later. Out on the road the Outlander PHEV is very quiet in EV (Electric Vehicle) mode and, in common with other electric vehicles I have driven before, you do notice any errant squeaks of rattles in the cabin. Performance is very good, with a 0-60 time of 11 seconds and a low C02 figure of

TEST DRIVE MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV

44g/km, meaning a low BIK figure of 5% for company car purchasers. I would question Mitsubishi’s claimed 148mpg figure. This is achieved under the standardised Economy test cycle, a laboratory-type procedure that all car manufacturers have to adhere to. My own experience of having the Outlander PHEV on test

for a week and covering 292 miles of a mixture of motorway and heavy town traffic was that it used eight gallons of the 9.9 gallon tank, which results in a miles per gallon figure of 36.5. Even with that disappointing mpg figure, there is a lot applaud Outlander PHEV. It is a big car for the money, has four-wheel-drive ability for tackling off-road driving and is

the one of the first hybrid cars I have come across that could tow a medium-sized caravan or horse box. It comes comprehensively equipped and could save you thousands of pounds in company car tax every year. It might be a car you can’t afford not to take an interest in.

LONDON FOOTBALL FOCUS

Dizzy heights for Hammers

WE ARE 40% of the way through the Premier League season, and West Ham are fourth. Let that just sink in for a moment. West Ham are fourth. Even to the most optimistic Irons fan this would have been a leap of faith just three short months ago. Speaking of leaps, the team’s built on them: Diafra Sakho leaping from the French Second Division to Premier League stardom, James Tomkins leaping from sometimes starter to really good football player, and Sam Allardyce making the leap from conservative long ball merchant to freeflowing football aficionado. But how is their play different? For one, they’re producing far more chances. Last year West Ham ranked 18th of 20 team producing on 11.1 shots per game, this year they rank a healthy sixth with 14.1. That’s more shots than traditionally shot-heavy sides such as Southampton, Spurs and Everton. We’re seeing the Hammers fielding players more comfortable in possession such as Alex Song and the revitalised Stuart Downing. Such changes has seen average possession jump from a woeful 44.2% last year to an almost average 47.1%. We’re seeing West Ham play higher up the pitch than ever before, catching the opposition offside a league leading 2.5 times per game. All the while West Ham have stayed strong in the areas you’d expect from an Allardyce team; the Hammers remain a top five team in aerial duels won with 21.5 per game. The stats back them up. West Ham’s success this year hasn’t been a fluke.

Overtime win was a thriller Derby Trailblazers Essex Leopards

Division One

A

DEPLETED Leopards’ team with only eight fit players eventually came out on top against a Derby side last Saturday, who had won eight of their first nine league games. Dave Ajumobi led the way with 23 points, while Will Ashby and Albert Margai hit 18 apiece. A slow start to the game saw Leopards trail 5-0 after two minutes but as both offences got going it proved to be the highest scoring quarter in a Big Cats’ game this season as Ajumobi cut the deficit to 30-26 going into the first break. That lead was trimmed to 50-47 going into half-time but the home side pulled away to lead 70-64 at the end of the third period. That lead grew to as many as nine in the fourth quarter, but a grandstand finish saw Ajumobi send the game into overtime at 85-85. The scoring slowed down in the extra period, but a big threepointer from Ronnie Baker 17 seconds from time put Leopards in charge, and they deliberately fouled Alex Dorr to prevent a threepointer from the hosts before Ajumobi wrapped things up at the foul line. American pair Chris Shalvoy and Dorr led the home side with 24 and 18 points respectively, with England junior Lee Goldsbrough adding 15.

n Leopards will look to maintain NBL Division One’s only perfect record when they host Newham Neptunes at the Brentwood Centre on Sunday, tip-off 4pm. They will look to collect their sixth straight league win when they host the struggling East London side. The two met at Harlow Leisure Zone a fortnight ago, and a strong second half performance saw a comfortable 96-68 victory for the Big Cats which saw them progress to the quarter-finals of the National Trophy where they host Leicester Warriors at Brentwood on Sunday January 11.

MATCH winning performance by James Cowen saw Brentwood win 20-17 at Luton on Saturday. James contributed 10 second half points in a hard fought game. This closely fought encounter was in the balance right up to the final whistle. The team saw a reshuffle from the Ipswich game with Captain Josh Woodcock having to resume duties in the front row. And the late withdrawal of Henry Bird with a hamstring strain saw a centre partnership of James Cowen and John Beith. The opening exchanges in the first half saw Brentwood create good ball for half backs Harris and Simpson to use, but repeatedly a lack of precision saw the ball being lost to the opposition. The Brentwood back row was winning the battle of the loose ball with the evergreen Metcalfe and young guns Whaley and Roman dominating the loose. The referee’s half time whistle saw a scoreless first half. The Brentwood team responded immediately from the kick off with the much improved Pratley and Skurr carrying the ball well into the Luton 22, Hobbs and King drove deep into the Luton defence and quick ball saw Harris create the overlap for Gillett to cut through to score the opening points of the game wide out. Cowen was unable to add to the score. Territoriality Brentwood were on the back foot for the next 15 minutes after the restart. Resolute defence from Greenfield and Stanier prevented Luton from scoring. After 60 minutes Luton finally broke away to score a well organised

Ed Greenfield (left) and Declan Gillett in action for Brentwood Rugby Club converted try to lead 7-5. Brentwood needed a positive response as the game seemed to be slipping away from them. The forwards response was immediate and drove the Luton team back and from excellent turn over ball, the maturing Greenfield was able to outpace his opposite number to score in the corner for a well created try which was converted by James Cowen with his most difficult kick of the afternoon to level the score. Further pressure saw Luton give away a further

Tri-tournament success for Old Brentwood U12s

OLD Brentwood Acorns played a tri-tournament with Romford and Brentwood. The first match was against Brentwood U12s and the OBs started slowly and Brentwood capitalised with three scores in the first half. The second half saw the Acorns team whose numbers were being boosted by seven players from their U11s, started to compete and make their tackles. They also started to attack the Brentwood side with fine running from Alfie Griffin, Connor Williams and Archie Walker. A good

penalty which Cowen slotted over to give Brentwood a 15-12 lead. From the kick off man of the match James Cowen took the ball and after a very kind bounce raced through some poor tackling to score in the corner. The difficult conversion just missed to give Brentwood a 20-12 lead. Brentwood held on to claim their second away win of the season. The Brentwood coaching staff were clearly delighted that they were able to close the game out and hold on to win despite the Luton onslaught.

second half saw both teams apply pressure but no further scores. In their second match Old Brentwoods played Romford and Gidea Park and Romford were the first to score but the Acorns responded with a try by Lewis Deller. A fine mauling effort by Joe Gowrley saw him steal the Romford ball and it was time for the Old Brentwood side to attack and score a further try scored by Sam Sandle. Romford continued the pressure and a sure try was stopped by a scything tackle into the corner from

full back James Peace. With a minute or so to go, the Old Brentwoods team attacked again with a storming charge from Bemi Thompson from which Sam Sandle took the ball on and over the line to score the decider, 3-2 to Old Brentwood. n In other matches the Old Brentwood U11s beat two sides from Romford and one from Brentwood, the Acorns defence was solid not conceding a try all day. The Old Brentwood Acorns U7s, U8s and U9s enjoyed playing some games against sides from Romford and Brentwood.

Ten men stalemate Brentwood Town 1 Harlow   1 Rymans Division One North

HARLOW Town came back from a goal down to deny Brentwood the victory in a clash of second versus fourth in the Ryman North. It took the Blues 36 minutes to open the scoring with Sherwin Stanley cutting in from the right to put the finishing touches to a deft bit of play. Harlow would level things up early in the second half when midfielder Dave Cowley met an Alex Read cross and finished with a powerful, low strike. The two teams continued to play out a stalemate as stoppage time began, by this time both teams had been reduced to 10 men. Brentwood continue their season with a home fixture against Barkingside this weekend.

Second half City bonanza Chelmsford City Hemel Hempstead

Conference, South Division

AN EXPLOSIVE second half from the Clarets ensured a fine win over Hemel Hempstead at Melbourne Park. Goals from Cheek, Gordon, Sawyer and Williams were enough to give Chelmsford their second successive home victory and lift them to within just two points of the Conference South playoff spots. Both teams played out an even first half, then came a whirlwind second half with Chelmsford immediately on the front foot. The first goal came after 65 minutes, Michael Cheek blasting the ball home. It wouldn’t take long for City to double their advantage, a fine individual goal from Gordon, then Lee Sawyer made it three with fine running from Joe Ward. Jason Williams would put the icing on the cake minutes before the final whistle to make it four.
