DOCTOR for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust has received a national award. Pre-hospital care doctor Rik Thomas won the Air Ambulance Doctor of the Year at the Air Ambulance Awards of Excellence held at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in Kensington, London. Dr Rik Thomas, received the accolade in recognition of his

actions dealing with a patient 30 metres above the ground in a confined space, working beside live machinery. Not only was Rik focused on treating the patient but also planning on how he would communicate with the other agencies from 30 metres up and organising expert trauma surgeons to be flown to the scene to perform surgery on the patient, who subsequently

made a good recovery. Awards hosts, BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin and co-host, Red Dwarf’s Robert Llewellyn handed over 10 awards to outstanding individuals and teams including pilots, paramedics, fundraisers and volunteers. Speaking of his win Dr Rik Thomas, said: “It’s an incredible honour to receive such a prestigious award and

an enormous privilege to be a member of such a dynamic and dedicated clinical team.’’ Jane Gurney, CEO of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust, adds: “On behalf of everyone at the Trust I have great pleasure in congratulating Rik. We are extremely proud of his remarkable achievement.” The Trust were also finalists in two other categories: Louise Rosson for Paramedic of the

Year in recognition of her management of the scene at a gas explosion in Clacton, and Campaign of the Year to improve the Critical Care Resources in the East of England. With no funding from NHS, the Trust relies entirely on charitable donations and needs £480,000 every month to keep both helicopters flying and saving lives.

HE Chicken and Frog had a special guest on Saturday, author Julia Donaldson and her loveable monster creation The Gruffalo. The bookshop and tuition centre located a short stroll from Brentwood High Street, was voted Independent Bookshop of the month for November by Julia and Pan MacMillan Children’s Books. Throughout the year they have been rewarding the most fabulous children’s bookshops across the UK. Julia Donaldson explains: “I am a big fan of independent bookshops. I like the way they each have

their own character, with buildings ranging from cottage-y to cavernous, with window displays by local artists or creative staff members, and with stock reflecting the tastes and passions of their owners and customers. But one thing they almost all have in common is the knowledge, dedication and enterprise of their staff.” Owners of Chicken and Frog Natasha and Jim Radford, are thrilled they were chosen as bookshop of the month: “We are very proud of this accolade,” Natasha says, “especially as we have only been open for two years. Four pubs have so far signed up to this fun and worthy cause: the Moby Dick, Chadwell Heath; The Archers, Gidea Park; Orange Tree, Havering-atte-Bower and the Old White Horse in North Ockendon. Rhino will design, manufacture and install your Front Frame Wardrobe Units into your existing bedroom space within 3 weeks!

Michelle Ward is Phoenix FM’s longest running daytime presenter and as Charlotte Civil discovers, is always on song

L

EARNING you are about to go on the radio for the first time is nerve-wracking to say the least. Or so I thought until Michelle Ward made the experience more frivolous than fraught. Chatting to the Phoenix FM presenter is like having a conversation with a friend that could last for hours. Our Made in Essex appearance last Thursday morning was only brief, but boy doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun! Michelle started in radio about five years ago, previously working in London for various recording studios and before that in Dublin in the property development business. She began working for Phoenix in Sales, then a Saturday show came up for two hours a week, and the rest they say is history. Michelle describes her show as quick, rambling, musical, moaning, opinionated, but most of all fun. “It’s totally different from any other show you may have listened to, is that good or bad? I also get people involved via Facebook and Twitter.” So why does she enjoy local radio? Michelle explains: “To make people laugh at my stories, to have them say ‘yeah that happened to me’, to hear new music from local artists and to get interested in local issues and charities.” Michelle produces her own show so she can prep interviews and really have an in-depth chat with her guests rather than just a five minute window, that many other stations offer. “If you put them at ease, they will talk to you all day,” she says. Her radio heroes have obviously rubbed off in the way she fronts her show. “James Whale’s late night talk radio was a joy to listen to, he always kept things fresh. Nick Ferrari is super smart and I love Jonathan Ross for being hilariously funny, sharp, quick witted and great at interviews.” What people may not know, Michelle is also

a professional singer, gigging all over Essex with either a band or performing solo. She also writes her own original material and nearly appeared on television’s two favourite reality singing shows The Voice and the X Factor. “Roll on 2015,” she says with a glint in her eye, “so I can have another go.” Perhaps the most inspiring story about her is that she has just returned to her presenting job on Phoenix after major brain surgery to remove a tumour. “All the other presenters have asked if they put the brain back in,” she says joking, “obviously they haven’t.” Michelle’s sense of humour certainly hasn’t gone amiss! Michelle Ward presents Eat My Brunch, weekdays 10am until 1pm. Michelleward.co.uk

Lynn wins title in Abu Dhabi season finale

A

LEX Lynn wrapped up the 2014 GP3 Series title in Abu Dhabi, becoming the first-ever British winner of the Formula One feeder series. The 21-year-old Essex racing driver from Aythorpe Roding, follows in the footsteps of Daniil Kvyat, last year’s GP3 winner, who is racing for Toro Rosso in Formula One and will step up to the main Red Bull Racing team next year. Previous GP3 champions include Sebastien Vettel and Valtteri Bottas. Now Alex is ready for the next step up, having enjoyed a record-breaking season in the Red Bull Junior Team, racing under the Carlin Motorsport banner. With the only man who could take the championship away from Lynn, fellow Brit Dean Stoneman, not getting pole and the four points that go with it, he was

Pedal power for striker Zarate WEST Ham striker Mauro Zarate has turned to pedal power to keep him in Sam Allardyce’s starting line-up and has called on Shenfield cycling guru Tony Harries to help him get saddled up. Argentine Mauro, who set up home in Brentwood after signing for the Hammers earlier this year, followed a long list of West Ham players to head for The Discount Cycle Centre on Chelmsford Road, Shenfield to get fitted for a new high-end bike. “I’m a big West Ham fan so it’s always great to help out the players when they come into the shop for their news bikes, “ said Tony. “Mark Noble and Trevor Brooking were in recently and I know Andy Carroll likes to get out on a bike. Maybe the players are setting up their own bike team, “ he joked.

n AWARD. The third annual

UK Cookery School of the Year Awards has announced its 2014 winners. Carole Rose from the Cookies Cooking School, Great Notley, Essex, won the title of Best Cookery School Tutor. The awards highlight the outstanding achievements in an industry that encourages a nation of TV cookery show addicts to become more creative in the kitchen. Head of judging panel Nick Wyke comments: “We couldn’t really argue with the support loyalty and love showered on Carole Rose for the best tutor award. In her own words she has been teaching kids to cook healthy food in a fun way, long before Jamie showed up with his pestle and mortar.”

assured of the GP3 title even before he took to the track for the last two races of the season on the Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi circuit. Taking fifth and second place was also enough to ensure that the Carlin team took the GP3 team championship as well. Lynn said: “I’m obviously absolutely delighted to finally win the GP3 Series: this title is definitely the biggest result of my career so far. I’d like to thank Carlin, the Red Bull Junior Team and all my sponsors for making it possible. Their support, as well as that of all my friends back home, has been invaluable.” “I feel ready for Formula One. If you look at the job that Daniil Kvyat did this year in Formula One, as reigning GP3 Series champion, it just goes to show how well this category prepares you for the very highest level of racing.’’

Stevens makes F1 debut for Caterham ESSEX racing driver Will Stevens made his debut in Formula One at the Yas Marina Abu Dhabi circuit after his sponsors stumped up the £500,000 to secure his drive in the vacant seat with Caterham Racing. The 23-year-old, from Rochford, was only granted his superlicence by the FIA, allowing him to race in Formula One, on the Thursday before the race last weekend. After raising nearly £2million via a crowd-funding project, the Caterham Racing team returned for the final race in Abu Dhabi, after the team missed the last two races since going into administration. Stevens completed the 55-lap race, at one point dicing with Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, and came home in 17th place and was the sole Caterham-Renault to finish the race after team-mate Kamui Kobayashi retired on lap 42. Stevens has spent this season in Formula Renault 3.5, finishing sixth overall with two race wins. Formerly part of Caterham’s junior programme, he tested for the team in 2013 and at Silverstone earlier this year. n LEWIS Hamilton achieved his goal in Abu Dhabi by becoming the Formula One champion for 2014. In a season long fight with Petronas Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, the Stevenage-born driver took a lights to flag victory, while Rosberg suffered technical problems and finished in 14th with an ailing car.

LIFESTYLE BEAUTY FOR HER

Imagine never having to apply your makeup each morning, yet still look fab. Isn't it time you went semi-permanent, says Lucy Moore?

L

ET'S face it women of Essex….life is hectic. With work, study or kids, it’s often a battle to find time to wash our hair let alone settle down to apply a decent face of make-up! Well, with semi-permanent make-up, you don’t have to. Best described as a form of tattooing using coloured pigments into the upper layer of the skin, these procedures can be performed on the eyebrows, lips and top and bottom lining of the eye, where you would normally apply eyeliner. The coloured pigment can last anywhere between one and five years depending on skin type. Top semi-permanent make-up artist Heidi Worman (right), has a clinic in

With a host of celebs queuing up for her talents: Sam Faiers, Ferne McCann and Jodie Marsh have all had their brows transformed thanks to her. TOWIE beauty Sam used to hate her eyebrows - ‘no definition, no colour’ - until Heidi worked her magic. Although Heidi does lip and eyeliner work too, most of the cosmetic work she does is on the eyebrows. ‘‘Whether down to genes or over-plucking, many women have poorly-defined eyebrows,’ Heidi says. ‘‘Using ultra-fine strokes to thicken, shape or darken the brow, the results can transform your face.’’ Clients come to Heidi for an initial consultation, where she will discuss their needs before making a bespoke template for their new eyebrows. Some other artists may use generic stencils but Heidi believes in providing her clients with

each eyebrow shape is too,’ she says. Heidi does not shave the eyebrow off first; rather she works with what you’ve already got. She also does lip procedures where a gentle line drawn around the lips can enhance the overall shape and pout. Alternatively, a subtle colour can be applied over the whole lips to create a permanent lipstick effect. Although Heidi does not offer these services, other artists can also perform semipermanent eyelash extensions where lashes are extended one at a time to give a full set.

Freckles or beauty spots can also be added. Today, the semi-permanent make-up industry is booming – meaning there are people out there looking to cash in. Heidi, who has over 10 years’ experience, urges anyone considering it to do their homework. ‘Permanent make-up is fantastic when it’s done right - I have emails from people telling me it’s changed their life - but you need to choose a reputable artist,’ she urges. ‘Remember one thing: It’s your face!’ For more information and prices call 07707 122000 or visit heidiworman.co.uk

Male Grooming I

T'S NOT just us women who want to look beautiful, Male Grooming is big business. Shenfield-based Menace is testament to this providing men with luxury pampering and preening. Charlotte Civil chats to Menace owner and founder Matthew Norris. How did Menace Male Grooming come about? Menace was established in June 2007. After over a year of research we launched Essex’s first male only grooming salon in Shenfield. My sister, Sarah

Norris, owner of the ladies salon Ace Beauty Clinic, has been a beauty therapist for nearly 20 years. There was an increase in men visiting her, and it was an industry that was booming in London. Beckham, the industry is more than on the map. When we first opened, male grooming was the beauty industry 20 years ago, seven years on, new innovative treatments such as laser hair removal and cosmetic procedures for men make it very much 2014. It once seemed unacceptable for men to have male grooming treatments and was almost frowned upon. Now, it is unacceptable for men not to make the effort with their appearance; good complexion, tidy facial hair, and hair free nostrils. It goes far beyond just a haircut. Do you think its more popular here in Essex because of the TOWIE stars? TOWIE has maybe put Essex on the map, but I believe men have always been aware of their appearance in Essex. As a county we get a lot of stick, but there are places all over the country where men take pride in their appearance. We just need to embrace the stigma and make the most of it.

Jamie McPherson of Bairstow Eves, Chelmsford Could you please begin by telling us a bit about your company and the homes you sell? Bairstow Eves is part of the Countrywide group, and from my branch we cover Chelmsford and its surrounding towns and villages. We sell all manner of properties, with our core range being homes priced between £200,000-300,000, although there is also a roaring trade in the £400,000-£600,000 bracket. We also benefit from close links to our sister company John D Wood, which deals with some of the more unique properties at the highest end of the market. What do homes cost to buy in Chelmsford? A traditional three-bedroom semi-detached home might cost £250,000-£270,000, and a three- to fourbedroom family home in excess of £300,000, although properties close to the station can attract a premium of up to 50%. Once you move

further than a twenty minute walk from the station, prices tend to decrease until you reach the villages, where period homes and thatched cottages attract a premium. What are market conditions currently like? Things have been phenomenal, with eight or nine buyers queuing up for each property in May, June and July. Comparatively, things seem to have slowed down in the last few months, but there is still plenty of demand, and some of the mortgage rates on offer are among the best we’ve seen in 15-20 years. With Chelmsford gaining city status last year, and with its excellent commuter links, there is of course an imbalance between supply and demand. How hard is it for first-time buyers to get on to the ladder? The average firsttime buyer here spends between £230,000 and £250,000, perhaps reflecting buyers with good

salaries coming in from London. Although there are lots of new homes coming to Chelmsford, with five or six developments in the offing, firsttime buyers tend to be in search of properties within walking distance of the station, and competition is fierce in these areas. Is Chelmsford a good place to invest in property? Apartments close to the town centre are very popular with commuters, and with buy-to-let yields of 5-6% available they are certainly an attractive proposition for investors. What do you expect to see happen in the local market over the next 12 months? The direction of the market will be dependent on what happens in the general election regarding stamp duty, mansion tax and the Help to Buy scheme. Help to Buy has had a hugely positive effect on the market this year and it remains to be seen what the government will do next. Prices are likely to continue to rise steadily and may reach a plateau in some areas. This time of year people can play the market a little – this side of Christmas people can sell their home in a sellers’ market and then purchase in January or February in a buyers’ market. Why Zebras …..? Our startling new advertising campaign has caused a bit of a stir, so I thought I would explain the background. Zebras are united by their distinctive black and white striped coats. On first inspection they look the same, however their stripes come in completely different patterns, unique to each individual. They are generally social animals that live in small harems, to large herds (similar to the estate agency species that tend to have their offices in close proximity to one another!) The unique stripes of zebras make them one of the animals most familiar to people. So, with our latest marketing campaign we wanted to find a way of making the point as clearly as we could that although estate agents may look the same, we are not. Estate agents reside in various habitats such as busy city streets (in packs), sometimes in rural villages and indeed some are only visible online. Here at THP, we class ourselves as professional, smart, honest and genuine – we are extremely experienced

Butlers Farm

A Grade II listed farmhouse built in 1610 and still retaining a wealth of features – inglenook fireplace, beamed living room – combined with mod cons. Country chic Butlers Farm sits at Cavendish Hall the end of a charming country lane and has four acres of grounds with countryside views that have barely changed down the centuries. There’s a heated outdoor swimming pool, relaxed kitchen-dining room with an Aga and a wealth of country chic. The house sleeps 10, plus one on a pull-out bed. Relax with a stroll across the open fields to the pub. The medieval market town of Saffron Walden is a short drive. Butlers Farm (01282 846095/selfcatering. travel/butlers-farm). A family home from home…

The Ickworth

If you feel as if you’re staying in country house it’s because you really are. The Ickworth hotel occupies part of Ickworth House, an Italianate mansion from the turn of the 18th century, the rest of which is open to the public as a National Trust property. There’s a grand drive and you emerge through the trees to see the palace-like splendour across the lawns. Once in the front door you feel as if you’re visiting friends, with a pile of wellies (to borrow) for walks in the parklike grounds. Rooms have an understated country casual ambience. The adults-only Frederick’s restaurant is a gourmet treat although the family-friendly Conservatory, in the original orangery, has the jovial feel of a house party. A swimming pool occupies a converted barn and the house cellar is a games room. You can rent bicycles and you have free admission to the Trust section. Country house elegance…

Cavendish Hall

You feel like you’ve stepped straight into a Jane Austen novel when you enter this elegant early Regency pile-turnedholiday-home with its columned portico. It’s a place of exquisite charm on the outskirts of the village of Cavendish (near Sudbury in Suffolk). The house has high-ceilinged rooms overlooking lawns – with croquet – and with further views of its 30-acre estate. Here you can stroll in unspoilt countryside – alive with wild flowers in the spring – and take a woodland walk. The house – once the home of TS Matthews, editor of America’s Time magazine – is full of antiques yet has all mod cons. Bedrooms, which sleep 12, are timeless and comfortable with a classy but casual country charm Cavendish Hall (01628 825925) (landmarktrust.org.uk), Cavendish, Suffolk. Four nights from £1,022 (sleeps 12), self catering.

Lighting Up Brentwood and Shenfield

An illuminating start to the festive season

S

ANTA it appears has swapped his winter wonderland this year for a grotto in the Sugar Hut and his elves are camping out at the Chicken and Frog bookshop. Their presence in Brentwood only means one thing; it’s the run up to Christmas and the weekend of the annual Lighting Up event which takes over the town on Saturday. Last year’s event saw thousands of people pack the pedestrianised high street to watch various special guests and performers on the main stage and await the big switch on which sees the high street festooned with pretty lights. This year another showstopping extravaganza is promised and a

INFORMATION

huge turn-out is expected once more. The fun starts at midday. There will be dozens of decorative gift stalls lining the pavements. Exhibitors this year include charities such as the Frontline Partnership whose community horticultural project for

people with learning difficulties – The Gates will have a stall selling and displaying Funky Furniture, and animal paintings on wood that they have created. Others will feature a tempting array of

jewellery, Christmas wreaths and handmade crafts - expect to stock up on plenty of goodies! Throughout the day, the main stage will be compered by Phoenix FM favourite Tony Smith/DJ Tony Sat who has been at the helm of the Lighting Up event for the past three years. Keeping the crowd on their toes and welcoming acts onto the second stage is another Phoenix favourite, breakfast presenter Joe Box. There’s guaranteed entertainment for everyone, from a performance by the Royal British Legion Band to the Brentwood Rock Choir led by local musician Andrew Small who will be rousing the crowd with a varied mix of pop, Motown and

rock hits. Teen girlband Sweet Chix who wow’d audiences on Britain’s Got Talent will also perform live on the main stage. But it’s the ‘big switch on’ everyone will be waiting for, so keep an eye out for the Mayor of Brentwood Cllr Vicky Davies and special character guest Postman Pat and his cat Jess heading onto the main stage around 4.50pm. Lighting Up Brentwood is a fantastic way to celebrate Brentwood, its local businesses and

talent and get that Christmas spirit underway. Don’t miss it, it will be illuminating. Shenfield will also be festively lit up on Sunday when the village’s big switch on takes place at 4.30pm. Those attending will be entertained by some great characters including Bridie the Irish Tea Lady who dances with her tea trolley to the tunes of Dean Martin, to the more ethereal sound of choirs and bands. There’s balloon-making elves and street performers too!

Lighting Up Brentwood takes place in and around Brentwood High Street from 12pm till 6pm. Lighting Up Shenfield takes place in and around Hutton Road in Shenfield on Sunday November 30, between 2pm and 5pm.

memorable show also explores a variety of musical styles. There’s country and western to bubble gum pop with a sprinkling of rock and roll thrown in for good measure. Saturday 29 and Sunday 30, Brentwood Theatre 01277 200305/brentwood-theatre. co.uk. Tickets £15

T

HE Peugeot 308, European Car of the Year for 2014, has been given an update with a new version of the French manufacturers PureTech threecylinder petrol engine, producing more power while improving fuel consumption and lowering CO2 levels. It might only be 1.2-litre in capacity, but this diminutive turbo-powered engine has a big heart with the 110bhp returning a CO2 figure of 107g/ km and an official combined mpg figure of 61.4 and a decent 0-60 time of 11.8 seconds. CHRIS MANNING trim levels of Access, Active, Allure and Feline, the mid-range models will be the most popular and the Allure on test is priced at £19,045. Built on Peugeot’s modular platform, it is 140kg lighter than its predecessor and it looks smart and classy inside and out. Peugeot payed particular attention to the roomy interior, which has a decluttered look to the dashboard, with 9.7in touchscreen controlling most of the cars functions. The steering wheel

has been reduced in diameter, adjustable for rake and reach, and as it sits below the instrument binnacle, make easy reading of the dials. It did take me some time to get comfortable in the driving seat, which thankfully has infinite adjustments. Out on the road the Peugeot 308 scores highly for comfort with an excellent ride soaking up the bumps in a quiet manner. It dealt with rough pot-holed roads with aplomb and was also very quite inside too. Bonus on this 308 for rear seat passengers was the fitting of the full-length glazed roof which adds an airy

TEST DRIVE PEUGEOT 308 feel to the car and has been popular with many Peugeot buyers in the past. The engine is perky in nature and power delivery comes

low on the rev range and makes it very enjoyable to drive. It is only the motorway when accelerating from 60mph to 70mph that it takes a little time to respond and shifting down a gear gets a good response. Fuel consumption on a mixture of motorway and A-roads over a 300-mile run of real-life motoring, averaged out at 49.6mpg, somewhat

shy of the official figure of 61.4. These consumption tests are carried under laboratory conditions which sets a benchmark test that all car makers have to adhere to. I do have a slight concern with the touchscreen. I found while driving solo that if I needed to adjust the setting of say, the heating controls, my eyes were distracted

from the road ahead for more time than I felt happy with and would dart my eyes to the screen and sometimes miss my intended spot on the screen. Standard kit on the base Access model includes air con, cruise control with speed limiter, electric windows, remote central locking, LED daylight running lights, Bluetooth, USB port and DAB radio.

The Peugeot 308 is competing in a tough market against the likes of VW Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, but on this latest showing the French maker has upped its game to compete on a par with its rivals, with a car that is good to look at and nice to be in with a good, comfortable ride.

EOPARDS continued their good form with a pair of wins over the weekend, both victories being sealed by strong fourth periods. A sublime fourth period saw Leopards blitz Hemel Storm 29-12 last Saturday. Youngblood’s decision to go small in the final quarter paid dividends as smothering defence and the ability to get to foul line on the fast-break proved too much for the home side. Dave Ajumobi got his mojo back at the foul line to lead the Big Cats with a season-high 28 points, while Courtney Van Beest kept Youngblood’s side in the game during the second period to finish with 16 points. Matic Zupanc, who along with Albert Margai and Ronnie Baker proved to be a deadly three guard combination in the final stanza, finished with 13 points, while Margai added ten. The following day saw Leopards shake off poor second and third quarters to finish the game on an 11-2 run and wrap up a 6361 win against Bradford Dragons. It was another thriller for the big crowd at Brentwood as the Big Cats’ three-guard line-up again proved key down the stretch. The home side had led 18-13 at the first break but were outscored 22-19 and 15-9 across the middle two stanzas to trail 50-46 at the final break. They were still down by seven with four minutes remaining before England’s most capped player Baker hit a three to launch the game-winning run. Margai put the Big Cats 61-60 up with 28

seconds remaining and Ajumobi split a pair at the foul line with 11 seconds on the clock. Leopards host Newham Neptunes at Harlow Leisure Zone on Saturday evening, knowing a win will seal top spot in the south group of the National Trophy. On Sunday evening they travel to Westminster Warriors, looking for their fourth straight league win. n Win a family ticket to see the Leopards in action, see page 2 for competition.

NETBALL

Victory for Brentwood School girls in Essex Cup BRENTWOOD School’s Under-14 netballers lifted the Essex Cup and will now

represent the county in the next round of the national competition in January.

Brentwood School netball squad

Brentwood were one of 16 schools to qualify for the Essex round of the National Cup. They took the county title after a closely contested final match against Benfleet’s King John School, which they won by just two goals. To get to the county stage, teams had already had to compete in the mid-Essex round. Competing teams were split into two pools of eight

and Brentwood’s determined girls were unbeaten in their pool meeting Great Baddow in the semi and winning 15-4. In the final, Brentwood were matched against a strong King John School but their two goal advantage was enough to seal victory. Coach Wendy Juniper said: “The team were focused, determined, athletic, tenacious and well deserved winners.”

Acorns battle hard

THE Under-15 girls’ squash team have booked their place in next January’s National Finals. The six-girl team of Elise Lazarus, Alice Green, Ellie Hewes, Eleanor White, Piper Tatum and India Webb stormed through their Stage Two showdown with Surrey, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire dropping only one match out of 15. Essex stamped their authority on the event from the start securing a thumping 5-0 win over Bucks. The Essex domination was completed in the final match against neighbours Herts who were dispatched 4-1. The girls could be joined in the finals by the boys Under-15 team. They finished second in their Stage Two tie and will have to wait to see if that gets them to the finals. Similarly, the Essex Under-13 boys must wait after finishing second in their Trophy match. The county’s U-17 and U-19 boys missed out on the finals both finishing third in their ties.

Crostyx 1st XI Brentwood 1st X1

THE Old Brentwood Acorns took an under 11s team to the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup hosted by London Irish RFC. The Acorns first game was against North Dorset, which they won in a close 3-2 match. The second against a Maidenhead RFC side, the Acorns went on to win 4-0. The Acorns started slowly against London Irish and by half time it was 3-0. The second half was a complete change as the Acorns team battled hard for the game, unfortunately London Irish held on winning 3-2. A semi final against Maidenhead saw them go ahead with two tries. Once again the Old Brentwood side came back into the game with two tries, but the scores remained even. Maidenhead scored first in the match and went through and the Acorns’ tournament was over.

East Division One

BRENTWOOD started the game at a furious pace, and were all over Crostyx like a rash. They created several chances, but shooting from silly angles and astray passes didn’t help the cause. Against the run of play Crosytx took the lead, then a penalty-flick was awarded to Crostyx as they doubled it. Brentwood hit the field with a do or die mentality in the second half. They stepped up a gear to against a now very defensive Crostyx. Brentwood fought hard until the end but in reality, it was always going to be an difficult mountain to climb after the first half. Brentwood face Chelmsford next week at home.

SHERWIN Stanley scored ten minutes from time to earn Brentwood Town a vital 3-2 victory over local rivals Thurrock at Ship Lane. Brentwood made three changes to their line-up for the short journey along the M25 with Danny Dafter and Shad Ngandu coming in alongside Baucutt who returned having served a one-match suspension. The Blues led twice through Marcus Milner and Louis Baucutt but former Brentwood striker Ross Wall drew Thurrock level on each occasion. The game looked to be slipping from the Blues but Stanley popped up with his twelfth goal of the season in the 80th minute to snatch the win which moves Brentwood four points clear of Thurrock.

n SOUTHEND solidified their possession of a League Two play-off spot with a 2-1 win away to Tranmere Rovers. A first-half goal from midfielder Jack Payne and an own goal from Hull loanee Will Aimson saw the Shrimpers two up at halftime, but a second half penalty from the sensationally named Max Power denied Phil Brown's side a more comfortable win. This weekend sees Northampton Town and their inform talisman Marc Richards visit Roots Hall. Richards has scored eight goals in his last eight league games and will be a stern test of a Southend defence. n BILLERICAY Town were unlucky to lose after Gray Athletic left it late on a drab afternoon at Mill Field. Goals from Dumebi Dumaka and Joao Carlos in the last ten minutes of the game consigned the visitors to their first league defeat in six. This Saturday sees a visit from on-form Leiston.
