The gift of Christmas

ULNERABLE children in Glasgow, many without loving families can now look forward to a brighter Christmas and New Year. Parish churches St Mary the Virgin Fryerning, and St Edmund & St Mary, Ingatestone, will be holding crib services on Christmas Eve (at St Mary the Virgin, Fryerning, at 3pm and St Edmund & St Mary,

Ingatestone at 4pm and 5.30pm). These services offer parishioners the opportunity to donate toys to those who need them the most - such as children in care experiencing difficult times. Rector of Ingatestone and Fryerning, Patrick Sherring said: “The churches used to run just one crib service but in recent years they have been so popular, now we run three.” During the services which

include readings from the Bible on the story of the birth of Jesus and carols under the festively lit tree, nativity figures are also placed in the crib by young children. Gift donations are later placed under the tree. For many years the toys that have been brought to the crib services have been sent to Africa for Cricket Without Boundaries, an AIDS awareness charity dedicated to helping, educating and

Dr.Winifred van Rensburg

developing local communities around the world through cricket. Because of the Ebola crisis this is not possible this year. Thanks to Keith Brown who is not only a parishioner but has the significant role of Collector of the Trades House in Glasgow, the toys will be taken to the Scottish City. Keith said: “There are many children in Glasgow that do not have loving families around them. Kinship care is very

active in the city. This is where grandparents and aunts look after children where the parents are unable to provide support or in some cases have abandoned their children. For many children in the city life is hard, and the gifts will show they are not forgotten.” Revd. Sherring added: “This is a great way for children to give something back, especially to those who need it more.”

RECYCLING

Go ‘green’ this Christmas B RITAIN as a whole is likely to produce three million tonnes of rubbish this Christmas, therefore Essex residents are being encouraged to have a ‘green’ Christmas by reducing, re-using and recycling as much of their festive waste as possible. At this time of year, the more organised among us are busily writing Christmas cards and wrapping presents but most of us don’t realise how much waste we create. Each year in the UK, we collectively throw away 226,800 miles of wrapping paper, which is enough to stretch nine times around the world. There are plenty of alternatives to wrapping paper, such as newspaper, or fabric. Parcels can be fastened with string, ribbon or wools rather than sticky tape which make it easy to re-use the paper.

NEWS RECOGNITION

Sheila is cream of the carers

S

Sheila, centre, with her award and presenters Eamonn and Ruth

Receiving her degree in nursing

HEILA Watson has reason to celebrate. The care home owner has just won a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2014 National Care Awards in London. Sheila, 73, along with her children Claire, Peter and Sean, run St Michaels Homes Ltd, comprising two care homes in Brentwood; Dudbrook Hall and Howard Lodge which are both renowned for providing quality care to the elderly. St Michaels Homes is one of the only family-owned and managed care home company’s in Essex. Sheila established the company in 1991 but her career in care and nursing spans more than 50 years. She trained as a registered nurse and midwife, followed by 25 years in midwifery,

five years as a health advisor to the elderly and obtained a diploma in gerontology. The awards took place at the Hilton London Metropole at the end of November infront of an audience of 700 people, hosted by husband and wife presenter duo Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford. Sheila’s son Sean, a director for St Michaels Homes commented on his mother’s fantastic win. “Mum never thought a little care home like us would win something like this. She was up against hundreds of people including big names in healthcare such as Bupa and Hallmark, so to win something like this is a dream come true. “Mum has built the company up over the years to have such a good reputation in the community, this award most definitely gives her

something back for the hard slog and many challenges she has come up against during her 50 year career.” Sheila has most recently been instrumental in the planning and design of the rebuild of Howard Lodge. On receiving her award at the prestigious black tie event, Sheila said: “Our loyal staff are the heart and soul of our business. Every member of our staff must care. I don’t look at residents as numbers on a balance sheet, this is not why I came into this profession, I came into this profession because I care about the elderly and I believe good quality care should not be compromised. “This has been achieved in both our homes with all the staff we have across the board. I feel very proud of what has been achieved.”

NEWS ROYAL VISIT

Charles gives engineering in Essex his seal of approval

T

HE Prince of Wales was in Essex last week to support engineering and an affordable housing scheme in the county. He attended Essex University in Colchester and the Big Bang event, focussed at bringing science to life, and an engineering workshop, attended by 1,000 students from 38 schools. His visit was to help raise the profile of STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – designed to address

the need for more engineers and scientists. Several of the Prince’s charities have joined forces with the Royal Academy of Engineering and Engineering UK to host a series of workshops for schools and businesses on the skills needed for the future and supporting schools in this important avenue of education. He endorsed a coordinated effort to address the skills shortage, saying: “I hope these workshops might help in terms of coordinating all

the initiatives that I know are going on in this field. There are an awful lot of initiatives in the STEM sector and skills side.” Next stop on his Essex itinerary was the affordable rural housing scheme at West Hanningfield, near Chelmsford. The Prince of Wales, President of The Prince’s Foundation for Building Community and Business In The Community, visited Hastoe Housing Association development in Pandan Close and met with residents in their

homes. The Affordable Rural Housing Initiative, was launched by the Prince in June 2003 as part of his Rural Action Programme, under the aegis of Business In The Community and in collaboration with The Prince’s Foundation for Building Community who took the initiative forward. The aim of the visit was to raise awareness of the impacts of the lack of affordable rural housing, to engage the private sector more in the delivery of well-designed affordable housing.

By joining forces with fellow Essex residents and registering an interest in changing energy supplier, participants will be entered into a collective auction. The more people who register, the better the price offered is likely to be, although usage and the amount residents already pay will also play a part in the calculation. Butterfly ball flies high

Charity fundraiser for Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal raises more than £50,000 during a glittering night to remember

Steak out new eatery A NEW steakhouse and cocktail bar is set to open in Chelmsford in February. Chop Block is the creation of brothers Steve and Dan Patten who both grew up in the area and have extensive experience in the meat industry. The eatery which will be based at 8-9 Grays Brewery Yard, Springfield Road, will specialise in the finest cuts of meat that are butchered and dry-aged at the restaurant and offered at affordable prices. Diners can choose their cut which is sold by the gram, or Chop Bloc burgers made in-house using 28-day matured British chunk steak and served with a choice of sides. Desserts will feature homemade cheesecake and an indulgent chocolate brownie. Housed in an impressive 18th-century former brewery, Chop Bloc also boasts a Manhattan-style cocktail bar, Block Bar. For more details visit chopbloc.com.

MORE than £50,000 was raised at the fourth Butterfly Ball charity fundraiser held at Orsett Hall last month in aid of Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal (GTCA). Held in celebration of 14-year-old Georgia Cordery (pictured below with mum Sue), who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called Rhabdomysarcoma in June 2008 and sadly died in May 2010, the charity instigated by Georgia six months before her death aims to help improve the lives of children in Essex who are suffering from cancer and other life threatening conditions. The event saw 330 people attend to support the local charity including former TOWIE favourite Lucy Mecklenburgh and many of Georgia’s closest friends with whom she attended Brentwood School. Fantastic raffle prizes on the night included a ski chalet holiday, an Olympia show-jumping package, football match tickets and VIP O2

Georgia’s brother Elliot with auctioneer Jason O’Shea tickets. A heart-felt welcome was given by Georgia’s parents Peter The Operatic Society and their new brew and Sue Cordery. Following the event Peter said: “A phenomenal amount of money was raised and we can’t thank enough, all those who made the Butterfly Ball possible. Georgia would be very proud and we are delighted to be able to continue helping local families through extremely difficult times.”

Scott Ross is known for his informative chats about the history of radio

LIFELONG passion for radio, a love of music and a belief in the importance of real local radio were the driving forces for Essex born and bred, Scott Ross to join, Brentwood’s local radio station Phoenix FM. Before joining Phoenix, Scott spent most of his working life in sales and marketing including a couple of years in radio airtime sales, mainly in the shipping and freight industry. Along with fellow presenter Alan Johnson, Scott was also a director of one of the bidders for a commercial radio licence in Essex. “Radio was always supposed to be a ‘fun’ industry,” Scott explains, “but the original local commercial stations became swallowed up by groups, not only did they lose the sparkle and richness which grew out of the community being served, they also lost the hallmark of presenters

Scott especially enjoys chatting with local authors and historians such as Frances Clamp, a regular on his show and Sylvia Kent who has written seven books. Other guests have included Lord Petre of Ingatestone Hall and ‘star’ of Channel 4s ‘Mr Drew’s School for Boys’, headmaster of Brentwood County High School, Stephen Drew.

Scott was also involved in a number of features commemorating this year’s anniversary of the start of the Great War. Some of his colleagues rather unkindly suggested that he was the ideal choice for this as given his age, he could probably have produced the series on his own from memory, without any outside help! Make your car part of your essential Christmas checklist

Y

OU have got everything ready for Christmas. The decorations are up, presents all wrapped, the kids can’t wait for Santa to arrive and like most of us, one or more of the days over the festive period could entail travelling to relatives or friends. So have you checked the car over to make sure it will get you there? To make sure you get to and from your destination, and more importantly, safely, here is an essential checklist to tick off a few days before.

Make sure the windscreen washer liquid is topped up. Certain summer grades of screen wash possess no antifreeze qualities, so buy one that is for winter use. It is more cost-effective to buy it as a concentrate and mix 50:50 with water. It is an offence to drive with an empty windscreen washer unit. Don’t use engine antifreeze – it will damage the paintwork and never use hot water to defrost a windscreen, it can crack it. Carry a can of de-icer and a scraper in the car.

Engine

Check all the lights are working with no burnt out bulbs. Those you can’t see visually, reverse up to a garage door or wall to check. Don’t forget front and rear fog lights, which should only be used when visibility is reduced to around 100 metres and switched off when visibility improves.

Check the coolant antifreeze level and strength to make sure it does not freeze in a cold snap, and while your head is under the bonnet check engine oil and brake fluid levels and refer to the handbook if you need guidance. Make sure battery terminals are tight and have visual check all round, particularly at drive belts for the alternator etc.

Windscreen

Tyres

Lights

A dirty screen will mist up more easily inside the car, so start by giving it a clean. Have a look at the condition of the wiper blades: if they are leaving smears across your windscreen it is time for new ones.

XMAS EVE Santa’s coming, so get in the festive spirit.

NEWS ENJOYING THE BIG DAY

Making the best of a family Christmas We all tend to reminisce after the festive season about our fabulous family get-togethers. But sometimes it’s the embarrassing and unfortunate encounters that stick in the mind. Life Coach Vicky Kelly founder of Yolsk and writer Simon Edge, give us their verdicts on how to cope

Vicky’s verdict AHH, Christmas. Family gatherings, the in-laws, alcohol and stressful catering arrangements. What could go wrong? Fortunately I like my in-laws (although whether they count as in-laws as we are not married is a grey area). However, life has brought upon me many times when I’ve had to associate with the company of people who are a little “trying” shall we say. So I have a few tips, to help make this the best possible Christmas given your circumstances!

Be diplomatic

seeking. Just be cheerful and calm, and just shake it off! No one wants to be caught in an argument between two people that they love dearly. Do not get drawn into to taking sides. Instead decide to be the independent voice of reason, who can see that both points are valid.

Help out

There are usually one or two members of the family who have the most to do. This can be incredibly stressful for them. Offer to help out and do it now. I know my Mum starts her Christmas preparations in November, so there may well be things that need doing well in advance, not just an hour before you sit down to the main meal. If you make life easier for someone, you’re pro-actively reducing the stress, and the likelihood of arguments.

As a general rule of thumb, if someone has a problem with you, it’s their problem. It’s something to do with the way someone else treated them in the past, or the mood they are in on that day. What they want, is for you to Do some be offended or drawn into it (on a troubleshooting subconscious level) so that they can Spend a bit of time in advance create even more reason to feel bad, having a think about what could Maid in Essex.qxp_Maid in Essex 04/08/2014 13:29 Page 1 or powerful, or whatever they are

making life easier for you

go wrong, and then ask yourself: “What can I do, to ensure that this problem is resolved/prevented” and write down a list of solutions, repeatedly asking yourself “what else?” until you’ve exhausted the options.

Simon’s verdict HAVE you ever felt that everyone else is having a magical Christmas while you’re stuck in one room with the same old people wishing it was all over? Sitting in the same old room with a load of old friends and relatives is what it’s all about. What sort of time you have depends on getting a few old Christmas chestnuts right.

Take a breather

A Christmas Day walk is always good. You always think you’re going to do it after lunch, but if you don’t sit down to eat till two or three o’clock and everyone wants to sit in front of the telly afterwards, it’ll be dark before you know it and you’ll never get out. Much better to go beforehand while the turkey’s in the oven. If you’re the one that’s cooking it, make the in-laws go out while you make a start on the sherry.

A feast for all

Flop infront of the box

For the meal itself, make sure everyone’s sozzled enough on that sherry not to notice if the bird’s too dry or the parsnips are burned to a crisp. Also err on the side of too much food, not too little. It’s annoying when the table is still groaning with food at the end of the meal and you know you’re going be eating meatloaf and bubble and squeak for the next fortnight, but better that than roasting too few potatoes and peeling too few sprouts.

Then it’s time for telly. I’ve spent Christmases with people who are allergic to television at the best of times and are in no mood to make an exception on Christmas Day. If you’re going to theirs, that’s a bullet you just have to bite. When they come to yours they’ll get their own back by talking through Mrs Brown’s Boys and wanting to know why Barbara Windsor isn’t in EastEnders.

Get unwrapping

I’ve always found charades over-rated. Give me the Names-in-theHat game or Famous Foreheads any day. If you do end up playing something more formal like Monopoly or Cluedo, remember it’s considered socially unacceptable to cheat against the under-10s, however much they deserve it. Finally it’s good to have in-laws who like cleaning up. Fortunately mine can’t get enough of it: not just loading the dishwasher but wiping down the surfaces and washing the floor. I wipe a tear whenever it’s time for them to leave. Happy Christmas!

After dinner, swap presents. Most presents look better when they’re still wrapped than after you’ve opened them. There’s often a one-to-four ratio – for every one gift that delights you, there will be four that it’s an effort to say anything nice about. The trick is to make them harmless, where it doesn’t matter if they’re terrible because you know they didn’t cost anything. Tell everyone to buy something for everyone else but spend no more than £5 each. It means you’ve got loads of parcels to open and if there are eight of you, you’ll get at least two good ones.

James Martin’s Home Comforts

This recipe from James’ new book is excellent for the festive season

T

HE affable Yorkshireman and presenter of Saturday Kitchen chats to Lynn Houghton about his new BBC series. Tell us a bit about yourself and how your love of cooking came about? I come from a family full of chefs and grew up on a farm, but they only ever worked with the food we couldn’t sell. My mother, my auntie and gran were all great cooks, and they did amazing things with cheap cuts of meat like pig’s cheeks. My father was catering manager at the stately home Castle Howard. I was surrounded by food and cooking all the time I was growing up. When and how did your career take off? I began my formal catering training at Scarborough Technical College where Antony

Worrall Thomspon noticed my work and took me under his wing When I moved to London, I worked 24/7. I rarely saw daylight. But I loved it and I just kept at it. I worked in the kitchens of 190 Queensgate, followed by dell’Ugo and also did a stint at Chewton Glen as head pastry chef. I was offered the position of head chef at the Hotel and Bistro du Vin in Winchester twenty years ago at the age of 22 and had to move back to the countryside. I have never looked back as the countryside is where I am most happy. Tell us about your new series of Home Comforts? Home Comforts, has been remarkably well received. I think it is because we all work harder than we have ever done, with more stress. And after all those long hours, there is nothing

better than chilling at home with wonderful comforting food. I don’t mean what we traditionally call ‘comfort food’ such as ‘pie and mash’ or a sticky pudding, but it can just as easily be a beautifully made and dressed salad or a magnificent fish dish. Many of the recipes I create are old family favourites such as smoked salmon, prawn and cucumber mousse, my mum used to make a similar dish, and poached haddock and egg with mustard sauce, the only dish my grandad was allowed to make - and given my gran was such as great cook, that means a lot. What do you like doing in your spare time? I live in the countryside in Winchester and I love the space and the peace and quiet. I also own a farm in Yorkshire and enjoy walks with my two dogs.

What are your plans for Christmas? I've spent the last few Christmases travelling. One year was to the Maldives which was the first holiday I'd taken in about 14 years. Another was a foodie tour of India. I discovered wonderful places like Kerala. The seafood in India is beautiful. I plan to go again this year over Christmas. *The new series of James Martin: Home Comforts returns to BBC TWO in January. The official book, Home Comforts by James Martin (Quadrille, £20) is out now.

James’s Mum’s Smoked Salmon, Prawn and Cucumber Mousse Serves 6 A little rapeseed oil 1 large cucumber, peeled and very finely sliced 400g unsliced smoked salmon, chopped Juice of one lemon, or to taste, plus lemon wedges to serve 200g full-fat cream cheese 450ml double cream Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 300g cooked prawns, shelled and deveined 50g watercress 6 cooked tiger prawns in the shell Melba toast to serve Use a little rapeseed oil to coast a shallow 22cm diameter, 4.5cm deep savarin mould, then line with cling film, making sure it overlaps the mould all the way around. Layer most of the cucumber into the mould, overlapping the slices as if they were fish scales, so that they cover all of the inside of the mould. Set aside. Put the chopped smoked salmon into a food processor with the lemon juice and blitz until smooth. Add the cream cheese and blitz once more, then, with the food processor running, slowly add the double cream until the mixture is thickened and smooth, scraping the mixture down halfway through. Season with salt and pepper and adjust the lemon juice to taste. Carefully spoon the mixture into a piping bag, then pipe half the mixture into the base of the cucumber-lined mould. Top with half the prawns, then cover with the remaining mousse. Smooth it flat with a palette knife and cover the top with the remaining cucumber. Pull the cling film up to cover and then put in the fridge for 30 minutes. Or until ready to serve. Peel back the cling film, then place the mould upside down on a serving plate. Gently lift off the mould. Pile the watercress and remaining prawns in a pile in the centre of the mould and decorate with the tiger prawns.

If you plan on having your Christmas meal later in the day, it’s the perfect opportunity to turn the lights low for a really spectacular atmosphere. The dark and dramatic table is the grown up Christmas look this year especially if you plan to entertain a large number. Dark tablecloths and napkins provide the perfect backdrop for crystal cut glassware and the glow of candlelight. As Good as Gold

by Mark O’ Connor

There is a song that we all sing on New Year’s Eve to say goodbye to the old and welcome in the new, it begins -Should Old Acquaintance be forgot, and never thought upon. Auld Lang Syne, a song written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788 and literally means ‘‘for (the sake of) old times’’ where we remember the past, the golden years while looking into the uncertain future. The most special thing about this song is that it brings total strangers together for one night only. For most people, New Year‘s Eve is all about getting all dressed up and whether you are staying home or going out to party, it’s about the totally over-gilding the lily and adding the bling factor. For the event of the year, you should save the best for last and

With the precious metal seeing a resurgence in value of late, gold is a luxurious commodity but its not necessary to wear the real thing as gold costume jewellery that is relatively inexpensive is a great alternative to wear at a party and will have you looking a million dollars. 1. Brentwood Park Ski & Snowboard Centre

Slope off for a great time

I

T MAY not have a snow-capped mountain backdrop but tucked away in scenic woodland a few minutes drive from Brentwood High Street is Brentwood Park Ski & Snowboard Centre. The huge 54-acre site boasts two large linked slopes with both a button and drag lift to whisk you speedily back to the top and a separate nursery slope for beginners. It is the ideal place for those who have never ski’d before, to the more experienced wanting to discover their ski legs with a refresher. I hadn’t ski’d for nearly two years, neither had my two children Katy aged 8 and William 5. But after a few tentative runs on the nursery slope we had swiftly moved onto the main slopes taking

the button lift up to the highest point before traversing down like naturals. The ski centre is run by former professional skier for the Italian national team - Sergio Cis and his son Steven. The rustic chalet-style building where you are kitted out with your boots and skis is typical of something you’d find in a traditional ski resort as is the warm welcome from Sergio, Steven and their team of enthusiastic staff. I wondered if there was any history to the centre, and when it first launched? “It was built in 1974 and was much smaller than it is now,” Sergio explains. “It was actually a former rubbish tip which belonged to the council. In the late 80s after the devastating storms of 1987 we

expanded to the size we are now.” As well as people skiing for fun, the centre is also popular for schools and youth groups who travel from all over the country for lessons. It’s no surprise then that it is one of the best places to learn to ski and snowboard in the South East of England, and one of the very few remaining in the area. Group lessons with qualified ski instructors are available (minimum of 10 students per group) for both beginners and more advanced skiers and snowboarders. One-toone lessons are offered too. The artificial slopes are made from a plastic matting which makes it quite different to skiing on regular snow as it is much firmer - you have to use your legs more especially when slowing down.

But, as Sergio adds: “If you can ski on this, you can ski anywhere.” If you have ski’d or snowboarded before you can literally just turn up, get fitted for your boots and ski’s and then head to the slopes. Those requiring tuition must prebook lessons. Non-skiers can enjoy watching friends and family from the huge balcony where you can sit and enjoy a hot chocolate or coffee.

Or, how about sitting in a giant rubber ring and whizzing down a slope? The centre also offers snow tubing which is great fun for all ages. There is also a go-Karting track, golf driving range and a Chinese buffet restaurant so you can spend the whole day here at your leisure.

Brentwood Park, Ski & Snowboard Centre, Warley Gap, Brentwood Essex CM13 3DP. 01277 211994/brentwoodskicentre.co.uk. Admission £16 per adult, £14 per child (under-16). BREAST AUGMENTATION • TUMMY TUCK • EYEBROW LIFT • FACELIFTS • NOSE SURGERY • LIPOSUCTION • EYELID SURGERY • HAIR TRANSPLANTATION • BREAST REDUCTION • LABIA REDUCTION

INSTRUCTIONS: These hint grids reveal the order in which the squares were solved by my computer. It's not necessarily the same order you would use, but it's probably close. Follow the numbered squares in order 1,2,3,... until you find a square you haven't solved yet. This square (or the one or two immediately after it) is a good candidate to solve next.

MOTORING

MAKING TRACKS

S

OME years ago one of my friends who owns a tank said: ‘’You must come and drive it someday.’’ At the time I thought it would be one of those things that would be put on the back burner. But wanting to do something completely different for a road test for the Made in Essex motoring section over the festive period, I thought why not give it a go. Nigel Moss, from Ashingdon, does not have just one tank, but a collection of military hardware that now numbers seven in total, including four tanks with tracks, one wheeled

Tiller steering by two grey levers variety, plus a Foden 26-ton cargo lorry and trailer. The lorry and trailer are essential, as the maximum speed a tank can travel on the public highway is 20mph, even with rubber inserts fitted in the metal track, without them it is 5mph. Destined for me to drive was a 1976 Alvis Spartan, which technically is classed as an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) and is used to transport troops and can, when conditions allow, reach speeds of up to 50mph. I asked Nigel why he bought the Spartan, and the answer was not what I was expecting: ‘’Well, I love Jaguars, and this Spartan is powered by a Jaguar engine.’’ The engine in question is a straight-six Jaguar 4.2-litre J60, a military version of the famous XK engine, which found its home in many of British manufacturers sports cars, including the legendary E-Type. Nigel stores all his army equipment at the Alvis Fighting Vehicle Society headquarters at Dunchurch, near Rugby. Arriving on a misty November morning for my road test at the society’s base, I was confronted with a huge farm barn, filled to the brim with around 40 tanks, guns and military hardware.

By

CHRIS MANNING Each year over the August Bank Holiday Weekend the society holds a Tanks, Trucks and Firepower show and puts on a superb display of tank driving, battle re-enactments and live firing displays. It is an explosive event – literally! With the Spartan fired up, Nigel ran through all the controls, with my first question being: ‘’Where’s the steering wheel?’’ ‘’It doesn’t have one,’’ Nigel replied. ‘’See those two big grey levers between your legs, that’s your tiller steering. Pull back on left to go left, and the same on the right one to go right.’’ The accelerator and brake pedal were in familiar positions, but the clutch pedal was actually how you engaged gear. You use the heel of your left foot to select first gear, and so on up the seven-speed gearbox and the toe of your left foot to come back down as the pedal pivots in the middle like a see-saw. Making sure you are in neutral, simply pull the gear lever back towards you, select first gear and press the accelerator and the Spartan has an automatic centrifugal clutch, it does the rest. I achieved forward motion, but very soon found that I needed to change gear as the Jaguar engine was screaming at maximum revs beside me and some rapid left action soon reached fifth gear and a heady speed of 15mph, adjusting the tiller steering to keep on the concrete path. Next was to try it in reverse, and after a few attempts in both directions, I got slightly faster and managed not to disappear into the hedge. Nigel then pointed to a large field on my right and said: ‘’Why don’t you try that.’’ I needed no second invitation and eagerly engaged gear,

TEST DRIVE ALVIS SPARTAN pressed the accelerator and off we went. I managed a top speed of about 25mph and made it into seventh gear in a wide circle around the field before returning to the concrete track. It was a wonderful experience. As motoring editor, I have a love of all things mechanical, and might now have to add tanks to my list. With Christmas nearly upon us, I have made Santa aware and put it to my Christmas list. I might have to widen the chimney, but I am sure I will hear it arrive…

SQUASH

Juniors face tough matches in draw THE opening rounds of the Technifibre British Junior Open threw up some tantalising squash match-ups when the draw was made this week. Essex has seven junior players entered in the Sheffield event, which will take place between January 2-6, with Ellie Hewes and Oliver Green being dealt particularly stiff early challenges. Ellie, the current England ranked number five Under-13 player from Colchester, has been drawn against the number one seed, Egyptian Nouran Youssef, who last year finished third overall. The match offers Ellie the chance of a headlinegrabbing upset plus a tremendous opportunity to gain experience against the world’s best. Billericay’s Oliver Green, who plays at Club Kingswood, is ranked 17-32 and has been paired with Scotland’s Craig Thompson in round one. Victory there will give him a crack at his own Egyptian number seed, Yehia Elnaswany, a mouthwatering prospect and another tremendous opportunity. Ollie’s sister, Alice Green, goes in the girls’ Under-15s against Lily Zelov from the US while Elise Lazarus, the 3/4 seed, opens with a bye then takes on Spain’s Sophia Mateos in round two. Harry Kitchens from Southend has drawn Czech opposition in the Under-15’s in the shape of 17-32 seed Ondrej Vorlicek. If he wins that, there’s the prospect of a 3/4 seed Egyptian in round two. In the Under-17’s, Aaron Allpress plays 5/8 seed Velavan Senthilkumar from India while Owain Taylor, representing Wales, will open against Switzerland’s Luca Wilhelmi in the Under-19’s.‎

Purrfect Cats six win run Essex Leopards Newham Neptunes

Division One

L

EOPARDS continued their perfect start to the NBL Division One season with a comfortable 83-53 victory against Newham Neptunes on Sunday. Having won their first league games by a combined aggregate of just 12 points, the Brentwood Centre crowd were treated to a second half blowout as the Big Cats improved to 6-0 in league play. Dave Ajumobi was again the main man for Robert Youngblood’s side with 25 points and seven rebounds, with Will Ashby adding 15 points and four assists. Byron Richards marked his return from injury with 12 points, while Albert Margai completed a quartet of former Neptunes in action against their old club with nine points, eight assists and six rebounds. Ajumobi opened the scoring with a trey, and Leopards poured in the first ten points and held the visitors scoreless for more than four minutes as they took a 21-11 lead into the first break. The second period started with another Ajumobi three-pointer off a Richards assist and although Dougie Bennett replied with a trey, the lead never dipped into single figures before a pair of Ajumobi freethrows sent the home side into the locker room with a 39-22 lead. Ajumobi again opened the scoring in the third period but the visitors had their best spell of the game as they reeled off ten straight points to take the Leopards’ lead into single digits for the first time since the early stages. Inevitably it was Ajumobi who broke the run, and the Big Cats

Albert Margai in control for the Essex Leopards

closed out the quarter on a 13-4 run to go into the final break 56-39 ahead. Richards hit a jump shot to open the fourth period, and with the visitors having lost Bennett through injury they noticeably tired, leaving the Big Cats to wrap up the win with a 27-14 final stanza. The Big Cats wrap up 2014 with a trip to Worthing Thunder on Saturday evening. The south coast club have had a mixed start to the season and are joint eighth with a 4-5 record.

MEN’S HOCKEY

Lack of composure proved costly BRENTWOOD trekked up to Kings Lynn to play a heated game on a cold afternoon in the return fixture to Brentwood’s previous loss to them 7-5 in September. The game certainly looked as though it would be high scoring for the home team, in what was one-way traffic into the Brentwood half. Perhaps it was the long journey up or the two week break since their last game, but Brentwood looked frantic on the ball, and lacked any sort of composure. This was telling and Pelicans were able to capitalise with two quick, opportunistic goals. It was at this point that Brentwood began to pick their game up, as they began to venture into the Pelican’s half. The game shifted with Brentwood

Pelicans 1st XI 1 Brentwood 1st XI  1 East Division One

winning a penalty corner. The shot was rebounded off the keeper a goal-line scramble saw Nik Hull slot one home to half the deficit. Minutes passed and Brentwood found another to draw level through Teale as Brentwood began to look increasingly dangerous. Brentwood had more chances to take the lead but couldn’t quite take them, and were made to pay, as just before the half, Pelicans slotted in a goal from a penalty corner. Despite going into the second half behind, Brentwood were confident that

they would be able to pull it back if they picked their game up. The half was contested strongly with a stalemate ensuing for the most part, although Brentwood experienced few clear-cut chances to draw level. It then took a mistake by Brentwood turning over the ball in the Pelican’s circle to change this, as they raced down the field and took a goal on the counter-attack. This hurt Brentwood and they dropped off the pace. Minutes later, the Pelican’s forward struck home with a blinding shot into the top corner. As the game drew to it’s conclusion, Brentwood contested but knew that they needed too much with too little time. They managed to grab a late consolation goal through Nik Hull, his second of the match.

Chambers seals points Brentwood Letchworth

RENTWOOD entertained high flying Letchworth on Saturday in front of a bumper crowd. With three wins in a row the Brentwood team were in confident mood. From the start they took early control in the forwards and drove the Letchworth team back, eventually the referee awarded Brentwood a penalty for offside, which Charlie Chambers slotted home. Letchworth came back from the restart and with some clever play from the Letchworth backs saw them carve an opening and score an unconverted try wide out wide out to gain the lead at 5-3. Brentwood were beginning to win domination at the breakdown with some excellent work from Roman, Whaley and Matters. Brentwood’s only try of the game saw Roman touch down under the posts after miscommunication between the Letchworth back three following excellent pressure from Matters. The try gave Chambers an easy conversion to

give Brentwood a 10 – 5 lead. Letchworth immediately replied with some very slick movement of the ball for their centre to score and unconverted try bringing the game level at 10 -10. The restart saw Brentwood gain control as the referee lost patience with the Letchworth number seven and sin binned him for persistent offside. From the resulting penalty Chambers pushed Brentwood back into the lead at 13-10 at half time. The second half was a dog fight, neither side able to break free of the other. Some outstanding defence saw Brentwood repel Letchworth time after time. Letchworth eventually created an opening to score a try wide out but the conversion was missed. Letchworth had regained the lead 13-15 but the immense defensive effort was beginning to show on Brentwood. Brentwood rallied in the last 15 minutes and they were awarded a penalty at the scrum which Charlie Chambers slotted over for Brentwood to regain the lead 16-15. The last few minutes saw a tremendous display by Brentwood as Letchworth became more and more desperate to find the winning score. The final whistle brought a tense encounter to an end with Brentwood winning by a single point.

them into a 5-0 lead. Gradually Chelmsford came back into the game and two well-taken penalties saw Chelmsford take the lead 6-5. It was not until the 35th minute that Chelmsford scored their first try, when from a driving maul, back row forward Chris Hoult managed to dive over the line for a well-taken try, and with the successful

conversion from his brother, Chelmsford extended their lead to 13-5. The second half was just a minute old when Simon Hoult put a kick high up in the air, unfortunately for the visitors, the ball bounced badly for them, resulting

in it being hacked on and centre, Harry Simpson won the chase to the line for an unconverted try. The last 15 minutes of the second half saw Chelmsford put pressure on Basildon’s scrum and it came as no surprise when following a series of penalties, the referee awarded the home side a penalty try. A successful conversion from Simon Hoult

Charlie Chambers kick won the game

saw their lead increased to 25-8. Chelmsford got their precious bonus point when Simon Hoult made a telling break and passed to centre, Jamie Morrish, who in turn got the ball away to full back Jamie Ash, for him to score in the corner. With Hoult converting from the touchline this meant Chelmsford ran out deserved winners by 32-8 and now top the table.

BOXING

A PACKED crowd were in attendance for Harold Hill’s Five Star Amateur Boxing Club’s final club show of 2014 featuring 13 all-Junior bouts. The evening began with the boxing tradition of 10 bells in honour of club legend Joe Brown who sadly passed away recently. Ten bouts featured Five Star boxers who returned with an impressive seven winners including Reg Waller who also received The Joe Brown award

Clarets on form

A BRACE from Jason Williams and a header from captain Mark Hughes helped the Clarets into the play-off places. Jason Williams opened the scoring with a composed finish just seventeen minutes in before the lead was cut short by Dean Sinclair as the teams went into the break on level terms. But nine minutes into the second-half skipper Mark Hughes restored the host’s lead, heading in at the far post, before Nathan Pinney levelled with eight minutes remaining. However, Jason Williams fired home in stoppage time. The power of the strike was enough to beat any keeper, and it was more than enough to hand City the full three points as they moved into fifth position in the league table.

Chelmsford top the table with victory over Basildon

WHILE the game lacked any real spark and conviction, the home team ground out a win in muddy conditions. Basildon game plan from the outset was to disrupt the home side and slow the match down. Basildon played down the slope in the first half and some good play through the phases allowed them to score an unconverted try in the left hand corner to take

who lost against a very impressive Fred Hudson of Dagenham and boxing brothers John and Jerry Buckland who will both come back stronger next time out. Five Star coach and matchmaker Edward Kelly said: “It was a great night for Five Star, possibly our best wining haul for a few years. “The club is really gaining momentum at present, we are looking forward to National Championships.”

THE JETS began brightly from the off and both goalkeepers were virtually unchallenged in the first 15 minutes. When the Jets were not pushing forward, it was all hands to the pumps to defend. Shaun came off to let Marcello on but it was Silver End that broke the deadlock. Ben made a magnificent save only for the ball to bounce away from him and be slotted in by an unmarked Silver End player. The half time team

talk certainly appeared to do the trick. A cross from Jake B found Nathan who whipped it quickly to Jack who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. The Jets pushed forward again and again with Jake B making sure the ball found Nathan who in turn found Jack, only for the keeper to make some excellent saves and game ended at 1-1.

Essex stars visit children at hospital

TOP England cricket stars were among a host of Essex County Cricket Club favourites who visited sick children at Broomfield Hospital. Graham Napier and Monty Panesar presented a signed shirt to the children's ward on behalf of Essex County Cricket Club. They took time out from training to visit the Phoenix Ward to meet children, parents and staff. Reece Topley, Monty Panesar and the others also gave out presents. Graham Napier said: “It’s always nice to come down at this time of year. It’s important to us as a club to play a role in the local community. “Seeing the smiles on the faces of the children as we walked around was so satisfying, and it was such a moving visit to be a part of.”
