ENERGY SAVING SCHEME Reduce your fuel bills with Essex County Council’s countywide initiative

Issue 009

Thursday, 4th December 2014

F

OLLOWING the success of the first Essex Energy Switch campaign, Essex County Council has launched another to help residents countywide cut the price of their gas and electricity bills. A second campaign was unveiled yesterday at High Chelmer Shopping Centre, Chelmsford, where council staff were on hand to raise

public awareness. The free, safe and secure way to reduce your energy usage works by joining forces with thousands of other Essex residents and participants will be entered into a collective auction, which works by getting energy companies to bid against each other to offer the lowest rate for gas and electricity contracts. The more people who

register, the better the price offered is likely to be, although usage and the amount residents already pay will also play a part in the calculation. Earlier this year when the first Essex Energy Switch took place, more than 4,500 residents registered and those who switched energy provider made an average saving of over £200. Councillor David Finch, leader of Essex County

Council, was among those who registered under the first Essex Energy Switch initiative. He said: “I signed up and saved money along with well over a 1,000 Essex residents. “This year I want more people to sign up to save. It’s a simple message: don’t delay, register today.” The initiative has also gained the support of various community and residents

groups across the county including Age UK Essex, Citizens Advice Bureau and the Rural Communities Council of Essex. Michelle Martin, for Age UK Essex said: “We support any initiatives that help struggling people, especially the elderly save money on their gas and electricity bills so we were very keen to lend our support.” To register visit essex.gov.uk/energyswitch.

New Government funding for Essex to improve services

A12 to get third lane

E

SSEX is to receive £3.3m extra Government funding grant to invest in improving public services that will generate benefits for the county of around £27 million. The Essex Partnership, which includes Essex County Council, local authorities, clinical groups and the community and voluntary sectors has received the funding from the Government’s Transformation Award Challenge 2015-2016.

Its aim is to improve information and data sharing across organisations in Essex so that services can be more integrated and provide additional community workers to support vulnerable people so that they can benefit from much needed community based support. These initiatives will help organisations across Essex to better combine health and social care services and a broader role to reduce reoffending, tackle domestic abuse and help individuals take control of their

own lives and wellbeing. Kris Hopkins, local Government minister said: “The local authorities behind these projects have shown what can be done to improve the services people get. “By working together they are eliminating waste and creating services which help people first time - not services which send people from pillar to post to get problems sorted.” Councillor David Finch, leader of Essex County Council and chair of Essex Partnership said: “The award

of this funding is testament to the work Essex partners have done in building public services aimed at people and what they need, rather than institutions and what they do.” Essex was one of 73 successful bids from the Transformation Award Challenge 2015-2016.

THE largest and most significant investment in road infrastructure for the county of Essex has been announced with the A12 receiving a much overdue upgrade with the addition of third lane between Chelmsford and Colchester. The Government revealed in Parliament last Monday a £1.5 billion investment for the road network across the East of England. Other plans include rebuilding of A12/M25 junction and £50 million of extra improvements to junction 7 at Harlow on the M11, which will improve access to and from the town. Essex County Council welcomed the announcement, with Councillor Rodney L Bass, cabinet member for highways and transportation, saying: “Nothing could be more important for Essex than make the A12 a three lane carriageway - the transportation backbone of Essex.’’

Sales to first-time buyers on the increase The Orwell Private Cardiothoracic Unit

FIGURES show that firsttime buyers getting onto the first rung of the property ladder are on the increase. Balgores Property Group have seen an increase during September this year of 11% more completions than the 23,200 made a year ago, all this despite the

mortgage criteria introduced in April 2014. This comes alongside news that the average firsttime buyer purchase price has risen for the fourth consecutive month by 3% to £150,950. Over the last 12 months the group has seen an

overall 25% increase in demand for flats, terraced houses and semi-detached properties for first-time buyers across Essex. Basildon has seen the largest rise in demand followed by Romford, Chelmsford, Hornchurch and Brentwood.

Vintage Essex-rocker is back on track

M

ICKEY Jupp is one of Essex’s timeless rock ‘n’ rollers, but someone who has never made it as big as he should have. He’s been championed by everyone from Wilko Johnson to Dave Edmunds and his songs have become classics, but for other artists. Now, though, one of the lynchpins of the Canvey sound is being celebrated with four-disc set, Kiss Me Quick, Squeeze Me Slow, which includes 70 tracks on three CDs, a DVD of an ITV Anglia documentary on his work and a 44-page book. Jupp’s songs beloved of rock ‘n’ roll fans include Cheque Book (recorded by Canvey’s finest, Dr Feelgood, on their iconic 1974 debut, Down By The Jetty), Switchboard Susan and You’ll Never Get Me Up In One Of Those (recorded by Nick Lowe), Standing At The Crossroads Again (Dave Edmunds) and Modern Music and Cross Country, by Southend hitmakers the Kursaal Flyers. Jupp, an impressive guitarist and singer, grew up in Southend, and was inspired by seeing the town’s leading R ‘n’ B band, the Paramounts at the Shades coffee bar. The band turned into Procol Harum and released one of the most played singles of all time, A White Shade Of Pale, but never tired of helping their young pal. Included here are tracks produced by

Procol’s singer/songwriter/pianist, Gary Brooker, others by the band’s guitarist, Robin Trower and still more that feature other members of the band. Jupp these days makes only sporadic lice appearances but was never short of people trying to make him famous. There are tracks here masterminded by Tony Visconti (the David Bowie and T-Rex producer), others by 10CC’s Kevin Godley and Lol Crème and yet more from Scottish hitmakers the Sutherland Brothers. On his album Juppanese, released on the punk label Stiff, both Edmunds and Lowe are present along with the rest of their transatlantic hit-making band Rockpile. Jupp, an independent and single-minded character, never quite achieved the fame he deserved but he made a huge number of excellent records from the turn of the 70s well into the 90s, music that could be the soundtrack to any party. The book – by former Kursaals drummer Will Birch, author of the book No Sleep Till Canvey Island: The Great Pub Rock Revolution – is an engaging read for anyone interested in the history of Essex music. • Kiss Me Quick, Squeeze Me Slow is out now on Repertoire Records (repertoirerecords.com)

NOW FOR

Christmas

E MAY be a newbie at Phoenix FM but Keith Rogers has worked in radio on and off since the early Seventies and had a fascinating career. “I first worked for the offshore station, Radio Northsea International,” (a famous pirate radio station transmitted from a boat in the North sea),” he says, “I became ‘legit’ when I joined Radio Orwell in Ipswich in 1975.” Radio Orwell was one of the first (legal) comercial stations in Britain and Keith was the presenter who launched its first show back in October nearly four decades ago. Keith later moved to Essex Radio (now Heart Essex) when it first came on air in 1981 but hasn’t worked full-time in radio since 1997. Keith has some great recollections from his radio presenting heydey. “Our ‘radio ship’ was bombed in 1972, interviewing the late Marc Bolan and putting together a very rushed tribute to John Lennon following his assassination are just a few memorable moments that stick in my mind,” he says. Keith joined Phoenix FM in October to present the Wednesday “1 to 3” show each week. His wealth of radio experience makes him an ideal candidate to add to the station’s already unique mix of presenters.

“It’s great to hear a station that has such a strong local identity as sadly, most radio stations today sound very similar to one another with very little local content,” he explains. He describes his new show as ‘very music intensive with a few bits and pieces thrown in’. As well as his return to radio, more recent years have seen Keith bitten by the acting bug and reverting to his real name of Keith Chanter. In the late nineties he joined the Southend Shakespeare Company and has since starred in various productions. Performances have included King Leah (Keith pictured left in the role) at theSarah PalacePlumb’s Theatre, business booming Southend-on-Sea, in which he wasiscast as the King. “I was very fortunate to be cast as the lead,” he explains, “as it is a very tough role to play.” He also performed at the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival. Keith has also gone from the stage to the big screen and starred in films including My Feral Heart which he describes as ‘unique’; the story revolves around a man with Down’s Syndrome and a Martial Arts film called The Liberator, both released early next year. He also played former American President Ronald Regan in a Swedish production ‘The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of a Window and Disappeared’ and is due to start rehearsals for Arthur Miller’s “Broken Glass” for the Southend Shakespeare Company. Tune in to Keith’s show on Phoenix FM 98.0, every Wednesday from 1pm.

BRENTWOOD’S Lighting Up event took place on Saturday when the High Street was festively lit up for Christmas. Various local bands took to the stage including former Britain’s Got Talent contestants SweetChix who wowed the crowds with four songs including All About That Bass, Treasure, Rather Be and She Said. Made in Essex’s Jess Ali who is also one of the singers in the girlband said: “We have sung at about five light switch-ons and the Brentwood one was the biggest. The crowd was immense.” Jess and the girls minus band-made Summer who couldn’t make the event, also spotted some of the TOWIE-cast including Gemma Collins back from the Australian jungle, dancing along to their performance. Jess continues: “It was such a great night and we are very grateful we were asked to be part of it.”

Ebenezer Blackadder comes to Chelmsford SHOPPERS at High Chelmer may have seen some rather unusually dressed characters in the centre last week, as Chelmsford Theatre Workshop promoted their latest production of Blackadder’s Christmas Carol. An unusual take on the traditional tale, the story follows the fate of Ebenezer Blackadder, the kindest and most generous man in Olde London Towne whose meeting with the Ghost of Christmas Past turns him into a cruel and witty miser. The audience can look forward to discovering if the smell of Baldrick’s sock will kill Father Christmas and cancel the season of goodwill and what exactly sausage time is? The performance takes place at the Old Court Theatre, Chelmsford from Tuesday December 9 until Saturday December 20. Tickets £10. For more details visit ctw.org.uk.

Don’t get stung by extortionate spending Financial adviser, Cliff Fowler, offers some top tips on how to steer clear of payday loans

C

HRISTMAS traditions come in all shapes and sizes – whether it’s an annual West End shopping trip, ice skating or a festive fun-fuelled family gathering. But if your tradition is a vicious cycle of last-minute payday loans to get you through the season, we may just have a few suggestions to help you avoid them. There’s no need to channel the spirit of Scrooge, but simply consider your options before downloading the Wonga app, or logging on to Amigo. It’s understandable that people in need of a quick buck would turn to these companies but charges from these lenders can be more in one month than a credit card would charge in an entire year, not to mention applications can have a negative affect on any future mortgage applications. So what can you do to avoid these spiteful loans?

◆ Use any existing credit card you have before

considering a short-term loan. If you’re in a tight spot, but can afford to pay the whole outstanding balance the next month then it’s interest free. Even if you can’t clear the entire amount, it’s

◆ Never buy online without a quick Google

search for voucher codes. There are plenty of websites dedicated to finding ways to save you money with some of the country’s biggest retailers.

◆ Don’t be afraid to wait. Best selling toys

will always sell out instantly, but items such as clothes will be discounted right until sleigh bells land on your roof. Companies such as ASOS will offer limited time discounts throughout December.

Christmas is an expensive time for shoppers

likely than the interest will be lower on your credit card than with a payday loan lender.

◆ You can apply for 0% cards even with a poor

credit rating. Poor credit will obviously reduce the timeframe of the 0% period, but deals are out there – try the Barclaycard Initial, which offers no interest for three months.

Sale LF PRICE

◆ Utilise your existing overdraft. Even if you

extend your overdraft and stay within those limits, the charges are far more likely to be less than a payday loan.

We’ve also listed some top tips for Christmas shopping savings...

◆ Are you a student? Stores such as Schuh,

Topman, Topshop and Apple all offer student discounts – ranging from 10% to 20% online and instore.

◆ Sign up with cashback companies, such as Quidco. They reward you with cash back on purchases from over 4,000 stores – including Tesco, Boots and Argos.

Real Life

Liz Parry meets Maldon woman Fiona Oakes who juggles running an animal sanctuary with competing in extreme ultra marathons around the world

W

44 WEEKEND

HEN most of us are fast asleep in bed, Fiona Oakes is getting up at 3.30am to look after the 400 rescue animals she cares for at her sanctuary in Asheldham just outside Maldon. It’s a gruelling routine that 47-year-old Fiona has been doing ever since she founded Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary 17 years ago. With everything from horses and hamsters to goats, chickens and dogs to look after you might think that Fiona has her hands full, but incredibly she also finds time to compete in ultra-marathons and extreme races across the world. Fiona has twice taken part in the Marathon des Sables whereby participants run 156 miles over the space of a week in the searing heat of the Sahara desert. She also competed in the North Pole marathon, battling temperatures of -40°C and narrowly managing to avoid frostbite. “The Marathon des Sables was brutal,”

says Fiona. “The heat is over 50 degrees, you’ve got a limited water supply and you’re carrying a back pack whilst running over 800ft high sand dunes. It was just appalling.” But Fiona doesn’t just take part in these events – she breaks records. In 2013 she broke three world records and is now the fastest woman to run a marathon on each continent plus the North Pole in elapsed and aggregate time. So what drives her to push her body to the absolute limit?

“It’s all for the animals,” says Fiona. “I do it to raise awareness of the sanctuary, and to raise funds. I want to give these animals a better life and to save them from abuse. I also want to let people know that it’s possible to do these things on a vegan diet. I’ve been vegan my whole adult life and I thrive on it.” Fiona’s achievements are all the more incredible given the fact that she suffered a cancerous tumour in her knee as a teenager which resulted in a knee replacement and the loss of her kneecap. “The doctors told me I wouldn’t walk properly again and I certainly wouldn’t be able to run,” she says. Remarkably though, Fiona not only proved the doctors wrong by learning to walk again, but she took up running at the age of 29 and found she was rather good at it. Next February Fiona will be embarking on her greatest challenge to date – to run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. If she is successful, this will be a new Guinness World Record. But how on earth does she find the time to train? “Sometimes I’ll just get up in

the middle of the night and go for a run,” says Fiona. “Then I’ll get on with the day-to-day work at the sanctuary. Most people might baulk at that idea, but if you really want to do something then you just have to figure out how to make it work.” Fiona herself admits that she doesn’t need a lot of sleep and thrives on physical challenges. She even worked as a retained firefighter for five years whilst juggling her work at the sanctuary and her running. Tower Hill costs around £10,000 a month to run so donations are much needed to

help Fiona in her work. She runs the centre single handedly with help from her partner Martin Morgan, 50, who works full-time, and also Fiona’s 72-year-old mum, Meg. “It’s hard work,” says Fiona, “but it’s so rewarding to know that I’ve made a difference to these animals’ lives. Some of them have been abandoned and abused and we just want to provide a safe and loving home for them. It’s what drives me on.” For more information on Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary, visit towerhillstables.com

LAUNCH DAY - SATURDAY 6TH DECEMBER – 10AM TO 3:30PM Join us between 10am and 3:30pm on Saturday 6th for the release of ‘The Stables at Trueloves’, a stunning gated development of just four individually designed three bedroom mews homes, located within a converted Coach House on the borders of Fryerning and Ingatestone adjacent to the historic Trueloves House, a glorious Neo-Gothic mansion built in 1859. ‘The Stables’ has undergone an impressive conversion to create four unique freehold homes – all double storey and one with a third storey mezzanine - retaining all of the original architectural elegance and offering the convenience and individuality many buyers seek but can rarely find in this segment of the market. The development is approached via a tree-lined driveway where the trees were planted in pairs, giving inspiration for the name – true-loves. Each property features a private garden, energy efficient air source heat pumps, under floor heating, two allocated parking spaces and a further private indoor courtyard set within the original Victorian cast iron stables under a glazed atrium roof. Since construction in 1859, Trueloves House has been occupied by various members of the British gentry. The property was designed by architect William White of London - noted for his part in 19th Century Gothic revival architecture - and offers many striking features which were carried through to The Stables. These include red brick elevations with stripes and decoration of black and gault brick, a slate roof with fishscale pattern bands and arched windows in a Gothic style. Helen, how do you feel about City & Country being crowned Housebuilder of the Year? We are truly honoured to be named WhatHouse? Housebuilder of the Year 2014. This is a culmination of many years of hard work, commitment and dedication and the whole City & Country team deserves a huge amount of praise for their efforts. Further Gold Awards for Best Medium Housebuilder and Best Renovation takes our tally to seven Gold awards in the last five years and reinforces our position as the leading housebuilder of 2014. How are your current Bristol General Hospital and King Edward VII Estate developments progressing? The General, the former Bristol General Hospital, officially opened to the public this September, and we have been very pleased with the positive response and the levels of interest we have

received. It is apparent that the market is keen to see a high-quality, waterside development which has the historic charm of a Grade II listed building. We are taking reservations off-plan at present and are set to launch our show homes in March 2015. The visitor centre officially opened at King Edward VII Estate in October, which marks a key stage of development. The centre, which situated in the former gatehouse, is a classic example of prime Arts and Crafts architecture. It allows prospective homeowners the opportunity to understand the breadth of this fantastic estate, the benefits of living in this picturesque area within the South Downs National Park and to understand fully the type of properties that will be available for sale in the New Year. What other schemes is City & Country working on?

City & Country has experienced a sustained level of growth in 2014. Alongside our two new launches, we have acquired the iconic Playfair Building at Donaldson’s College, Edinburgh; Bramshill House, Hampshire (one of the most significant Jacobean ‘prodigy houses’ in Britain); the Grade I listed Sundridge Park Mansion in Greater London, and now three further buildings in South Bristol, two of which are listed. What types of properties is City & Country building? Due to the nature of our heritage restoration work we build an eclectic range of properties at our various developments. These include restored and newly built apartments, duplexes and houses, as well as unique conversions such as chapels, temples and in one instance, a former WWII decontamination bunker. How much does a property by City & Country cost to buy? Prices range between developments, with prices for a unique one-bedroom mezzanine apartment at The Garden Quarter, Caversfield, from £212,500, up to £1.4m for a stunning three-bedroom mews house at Bentley Priory, Stanmore. What is City & Country’s USP? We painstakingly restore some of the UK’s most architecturally and historically significant buildings, creating luxury homes that feature a unique combination of period features with contemporary specification. Such a combination is rarely found in a modern development, and as a result, our homeowners can choose to live in truly astonishing buildings set within beautiful landscaped gardens.

The ‘silly season’ and build up to the big day does tend to be the busiest time of the year socially, but just stand back and see how warm, brightly lit and cosy your home looks … exactly somewhere potential buyers will imagine themselves living in “this time next year” ….. Our research shows that it is taking longer to find buyers, in comparison to earlier in 2014. Many home owners are now choosing to wait to see their ‘dream home’ before putting their house on the market, but we believe this could be why the market has slowed some-what. Without new properties coming on the market, ‘dream homes’ will never be found. We recommend putting your home on the market no matter what time of year and here are our top five reasons:

£249,995

• When there are a shortage of properties, yours could generate huge interest, achieving a much greater sale price than you anticipated • Finding a buyer before you find your ‘dream home’ reduces the need to panic sell to the 1st viewer through the door • Once a sale price has been agreed, you can budget properly • Being in a ‘sold’ position provides excellent possibilities to negotiate on the price of your new home • Offering on a new home once your sale is secured reduces the risk of your purchase falling through – it will only instil confidence in that seller.

CHRISTMAS FOR HIM

8

Make a Scotsperson proud, says our fashion expert Mark O’Connor

THIS is certainly Scotland’s year, if not for the headlines over the Yes/No independence campaign then for the highlands favourite fabric, Tartan. This truly

2

historic plaid is having a resurgence for winter 2014. But what do we know of Tartan? The iconic fabric has become synonymous with Scotland and in particular Scottish clans and families. The fabric that is popular in Kilts and blankets has been around from the late sixteenth century but really became

4

popular with Scottish Highlanders during the seventeenth century. Tartan patterns

9

became localised within certain districts of manufacture, as they relied on a limited range of colour

dyes and were made

of the local

coarser type of wool.

Fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier have been

using tartan in their designs since the beginning of their careers and it’s what

11

we have come to recognise them for. Pop star Rod Stewart is a great ambassador for the fabric and has often been seen wearing the most famous red and navy check variety called the Royal Stewart or Stuart tartan. There are around 1300 recorded tartan patterns registered today so when choosing which one will make it into your wardrobe this winter you have a lot to choose from. Another Scottish import that gets a warm welcome this time of year is a dram of fine Whisky. David Beckham is

The right Mixx B

ACK in 2009 Kia launched the Soul which sold well in America, particularly to 20-something college students, but its chunky looks somehow failed to light the spark of British buyers. Now a second generation Soul will hope to address that with even more funky styling inside and out, taking a lot of design cues from its 2012 concept car, the Track’ster. Externally the Soul still retains the upright stance and squarish looks of the original, but styling cues front and rear have given a fresh dramatic look to the Soul. The use of gloss piano black for the front and rear bumpers and wheel arches, while the treatment to front and rear LED light clusters adds to the kerbside appeal. Model line-up

CHRIS MANNING comprises 12 in all, beginning with Start, Connect and Connect Plus being the regular cars and for a more distinctive Soul there is Mixx and Maxx. Engines are both 1.6-litre capacity for diesel and petrol mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox, with automatic option only available on the diesel powerplant. On test was the Soul Mixx which has an on the road price of £19,750 for the manualgearboxed diesel version. Add £1,500 for the automatic option. Standard features on every Soul are DAB radio, tyre pressure monitor system, air conditioning, electric windows all round, electricially adjustable door mirrors, steering wheel mounted controls, USB and AUX ports and six

airbags. Only thing missing (which is becoming increasingly common on new cars) is the deletion of a CD player. Based on the Cee’d platform it is longer and wider which all adds to increased interior space benefitting leg and shoulder room and the wider tailgate opening with increased luggage capacity to 354 litres. Under the boot floor are three moulded storage boxes, handy for keeping such things as tools, boots etc hidden away. Inside the Mixx has a very modern jazzy interior with excellent quality fit and finish which really gives it an upmarket feel. Stacked air vents either end of the dashboard are topped off with circular tweeters and at night time the large door speakers come into their own. Surrounding the front door speakers

is a light ring, which either pulses to the music being played or changes colour when set to Mood. Behind the wheel the deeply-recessed instrument binnacle takes a bit of getting used to, as at first glance the dials seem a long way away. Using the Cee’d chassis allows the fitment of Flex Steer, which adjusts the power assistance, with three setting of Normal, Comfort and Sport. Out on the road the ride of the

KIA SOUL Mixx (£12,600-£21,550) i Car Facts

TEST DRIVE KIA SOUL

Soul Mixx was a bit disappointing. I found the ride to be choppy and making more of the bumps in the road that were actually there. Some of this could be down to the fitting of the low profile 235/45 18in tyres, which

is something I have experienced before with these skinny sidewalled tyres. Fitting different deeper profile tyres which have more give in the sidewalls often alleviates this. On test the 1.6-litre engine, with 126bhp

proved to be a willing performer. It was noticeably quiet even from start up from cold and reaches 0-60 in 10.8 seconds and CO2 rating of 132g/km. Over a mixed town traffic/motorway driving it achieved 47.6mpg, the official

Government test figure on the combined cycle being 56.5mpg. n Kia have just revealed an all-electric Soul EV. It is the Korean companies first electric car to be sold globally and is priced at £24,995 after £5,000 Government grant.

LONDON FOOTBALL FOCUS West Ham United 1 Newcastle United 0

AARON Cresswell scored his first goal for the Hammers as the team moved up to fifth in the Premier League with a win against in-form Newcastle. Their streak of six wins in a row came to an end after Creswell steered in Kouyate’s shot just before the hour mark. The win was an excellent way to remedy last week’s loss to Everton; West Ham’s only defeat in their last seven games. Boss Sam Allardyce was pleased with the goal, “We have to say it was a fantastic finish from Cresswell. It was fortuitous he got in that position. He’s a full-back and carried on his run into the box.”

DEBUTANT Noel Hunt denied Charlton a share of the points with an injury-time goal at The Valley on Saturday. “It was cruel” grumbled Addicks boss Bob Peeters at full-time, “We only have ourselves to blame. We had enough chances to win maybe two games but it’s about finishing”. Despite the loss, Charlton remain only three points off of the Championship play-off spots, a position they’ll look to build on after midfielder Francis Coquelin extended his loan from Arsenal last week.

JUNIOR RUGBY

EMPHATIC VICTORY OLD Brentwood’s travelled to Woodford for a league match with only thirteen players and it looked like a heavy defeat was on the cards. The boys however had different ideas and produced one of the best performances of the season so far. Tom Walker caught the ball straight from the kick off and ran half the length of the pitch to score a try under the posts which was converted by Toby Austin. OB’s piled on the pressure and played with confidence, scrum half Tim Mason saw an opening on the blindside and showed his strength running in a try from the ten metre line. It looked like OB,’s we’re going to maintain a clean sheet until Woodford passed the ball along their back line to score an unconverted try minutes

before half time taking the score to 19-5. At the start of the second half forwards Oliver Potter and Miles Brewerton continued to dominate, taking control of the breakdown resulting in Woodford being penalised on their own 22 metre line, a quick tap penalty was taken and OB’s scored in the corner. Strong defence from George Burnett and a try-saving tackle from Alex Savage prevented Woodford from breaking the OB’s line. Good support play and passing allowed Toby Austin to score under the posts and some powerful running from prop Tomi Sotire gave Tom Walker his third try which sealed an emphatic 36-5 victory.

Victory for Old Brentwood under 14s rugby squad

L

EOPARDS sealed home court advantage and top spot in the south pool of the National Trophy with a comfortable 94-68 win against Newham Neptunes on Saturday. The visitors to Harlow Leisure Zone matched the Big Cats in the first half, but were blown away by a 32-17 third period as Robert Youngblood’s side set up a quarter-final against Leicester Warriors at the Brentwood Centre on Sunday January 11. Will Ashby led the Leopards with 16 points, with Dave Ajumobi adding 15 and Lawrence Brown 14. Albert Margai (13) and Courtney Van Beest (10) also finished in double figures as all 10 available Leopards played at least 16 minutes and got on the scoresheet. The Big Cats shaded the first period 23-21, and a 10-3 run to close out the first half sent them into the locker room with a 45-38 lead. But it was a 15-2 run early in the second half that put the home side firmly in control, and they never looked back after that, going into the final break 77-55 ahead before outscoring Neptunes 17-13 in the fourth period. On Sunday evening Youngblood’s side made it six straight wins as they shaded a tight game in Westminster 61-60. The Big Cats trailed 34-27 with 3:10 remaining in the first half, but a timeout from Youngblood steadied things for the visitors and they finished the half strongly to cut the margin to 39-37. It was still a two point game with four minutes of the third period, and a basket former Leopard and England international Mike Martin sent Warriors into the final break 52-48 ahead. The game was tied with 23.9 seconds remaining on the clock when Ajumobi stole the ball with 7.1 seconds remaining and drove to the basket where he was hit what could easily have been called an intentional foul. He picked himself up, but missed the first free-throw before hitting the second and Leopards hung on for the victory. n The winner of our competition to win a family ticket to see the Leopards in action against Newham Neptunes on December 14 was Chris White from Shenfield.

MEN’S HOCKEY

Seven up for untouchable Brentwood BRENTWOOD ended their rocky start to life in Division One with the most complete team victory in emphatic style against local rivals Chelmsford. As the game started, Brentwood matched their opponents well, even from the start forcing them to rely on their centre-back to either throw long ariels or crash-balls to gain any penetration into the Brentwood half. The start got even better as minutes in, a sliding James Duggan turned one home from close on his return from injury. The early goal put Brentwood on the front foot and in control of the game. Brentwood contained Chelmsford

well and won a penalty-corner for their pressure. Steven Naven stepped-up and threw a screamer of a drag-flick into the top right hand corner. Naven once again produced a powerful drag-flick, leaving defenders to dodge out the way, as the ball flew into the top left corner. The onslaught continued. A nice passing move down the right with Kris Waites moved the ball into the circle and Henry Wollaston pounced on it, to gain his first if the match as

Chelmsford’s woes continued. They then lost a player to the sin-bin for a cynical foul and Brentwood struck again, this time through Jak Taylor. Another goal-mouth melee saw the ball rebound off the keeper to a waiting Naven, who launched the ball into the roof of the net for his hat-trick. Brentwood were untouchable, with solidarity stemming from the defence through the pitch and remained calm even during a sin-bin period for two players. Alex Henderson got the last goal with a one-on-one with the keeper, which he coolly put on his reverse to convert.

TRIPLE WIN DELIGHT FOR FALCON R

OMFORD’S Team Falcon travelled to Rochester Kent, where three fighters where representing the club in top level kickboxing. With current three-time British Champion Gareth Evans defending his IKF British title, current World Champion Liam Wells fighting a Belgium fighter in K1 Kickboxing rules and Sarah Worsold challenging for the IKF Five Nations title, this was only the second time in four years all three of Falcons elite fighters had been on the same event. First in the ring was Sarah Worsfold fighting current Irish champion Amy Wilson from Donegal for the IKF Five Nations Full Contact Kickboxing title. It was clear immediately that the power of Worsfold was going to be a big factor in the fight, but the Irish fighter also showed she was ready to take the shots and make the task hard for Worsfold and looking to land her trademark big left hook. The power of the exchanges were telling by the fourth round with Sarah slightly bleeding from the nose and Wilson with swelling over both eyes but particularly the left after taking a large number of powerful straight right hands from Worsfold. The result was a unanimous points victory to Sarah Worsfold, the new IKF Five Nations kickboxing champion from Falcon.

Skipper Martin Gillett opened the scoring for Brentwood

Next up for Falcon was World Full Contact champion Liam Wells fighting under K1 rules. Up against an experienced K1 rules fighter Liam was out to prove his skill set can be just as lethal up against a very tough and skilful fighter is was clear that Liam was going to be putting in dominant display. Over the three rounds he wobbled his opponent on a number of occasions but three rounds were not enough to get a stoppage against such a tough opponent.
The fight went to the judges card and the winner of this international match up was Falcons Liam Wells by unanimous decision. Last fight of the night was Gareth Evans defending his IKF British title against former opponent and recent world championships silver medallist Michael Groom. The fight was underway and Evans was looking to stamp his authority against his slightly taller opponent and Groom being cautious of Evans power was fighting well on the back foot.
Evans was getting the better of exchanges and in the third round came when a shot which sent Groom to the canvas. Evans was now looking to end the fight and although he was stalking his opponent the fight went the full distance.
The winner by unanimous decision and still IKF super-welterweight British Champion was Gareth Evans.
A fantastic night for Falcon Kickboxing which has completed a great year for the club and the fighters.

Gillett try leads the charge BRENTWOOD travelled to Ilford Wanderers for a hastily re-arranged game, after Brentwood’s pitches were deemed unplayable due to the adverse weather. The Brentwood team began well and the game plan was clearly to play a fast open game utilising the pace on offer in the backs. This approach was rewarded with an opening try from evergreen skipper Martin Gillett, who finished off a sparkling move to side step his way over after some strong build up play from Declan Gillett and robust centre Bob Bird. The game then entered a very even period with Ilford’s superior

Ilford dominated possession at the start of the second half and more indiscipline resulting in a yellow card for Brentwood, they found themselves very much on the back foot but got through the sin bin period without conceding any points. Ultimately the pressure told and

the Ilford scrum half eventually powered over from a short range penalty for a converted score to take the game into the final quarter with Brentwood holding a narrow 15-14 lead. Following strong running from Mark Smith the ball was again moved wide for another Brentwood score from full back Dennie Jones. With Ilford now tiring, Brentwood were able to round things off in style with another excellent team try this time finished off by Bob Bird. n Brentwood U19s have progressed to the second round of the Essex Cup following a tough 17-15 victory over Woodford Colts.

Rees pair seals win Brentwood Town 3 Gt Wakering Rovrs  0 Rymans Division One North

ROBBIE Rees scored twice as Brentwood Town moved up to third in Ryman Division One North with a 3-0 victory over Great Wakering Rovers at The Arena. Both Rees and Sam Bantick scored with free-kick’s either side of half-time and the former made sure of the win late on with a long-range shot, stretching Brentwood’s unbeaten league run to six. Rees curled a 25-yard free-kick in towards the back post and the ball glanced past head of Ryan O’Rawe and in beyond goalkeeper Adam Seal. Great Wakering almost levelled the score late in the half as Nash burst through on goal but Blues’ keeper Ollie Bowles was quick off his line to deny the frontman. Bowles made sure there was no way back for the away side with a good save from Jay Nash at the back post before Rees added his second of the day, completing the win seven minutes from time with a shot from range.

FA Trophy

STORTFORD progressed to the First Round of the FA Trophy after sealing a good win against Chelmsford City in what was eventually a tight game. Two goals from forward Ryan Auger, a curling effort from Sheldon Sellears and an unlucky own-goal had the Blue’s cruising with just 20 minutes to go. Chelmsford managed to fight their way back into the tie to set up a nervy finish. A close-range goal from Michael Cheeks began the Clarets comeback, followed by substitute Jason Williams driving effort after 80 minutes. Defender Yado Mambo score after a goalmouth scramble, but it was too little too late for Chelmsford City.
