AIRSHOW

RESURRECTED

Issue 004 Thursday, 30th October 2014

S

OUTHEND Airshow is to return to the skies, after a volunteer group has secured the funds to ensure it goes ahead in 2015. Save Southend Airshow has secured the funding of £220,000 to ensure the iconic seaside event, which has taken place since 1986,

makes a welcome return on September 12 and 13, 2015. Southend Airshow and Military Festival attracted crowds of up to 400,000 before being axed two years ago by Southend Council as part of a £10m savings plan. Next year’s line-up has not yet been announced, but previous highlights have

included a Vulcan bomber, the Red Arrows and the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Tom Curtis, from Save Southend Airshow, said: “People love airshows, and ever since the council voted to close it, there’s been a massive outpouring of community support. The

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

team has worked incredibly hard over the last year and a half to create a fully costed, workable and sustainable event that Southend can be proud of and put the town on the map.’’ The group’s bid to stage one this year failed due to a £35,000 shortfall in funding, so the 2015 show will be

appreciated by many. “We couldn’t be more excited about its return,” Curtis continued, “airshows are not cheap but Southend is probably one of the best places to have one. You’ve got this fantastic three-mile strip on the seafront, great access to get in, and an international airport.’’

HE Essex flag has been flying full mast all this week at the heart of Government in Westminster, to celebrate the important role the county plays in the nation’s cultural heritage. Eric Pickles, MP for Brentwood and Ongar (right), raised the flag outside the Department for Communities and Local Government headquarters to mark Essex Day last Sunday, October 26, which falls on the feast day of Saint Cedd the county’s patron saint. Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Pickles, said: “It is only right that Her Majesty’s Government recognises Essex by flying its flag to celebrate their county day”. The Essex flag is comprised of three white seaxes (meaning short Saxon swords) with gold pommels, on a red field were the arms ascribed in the later medieval period to the ancient kingdom of the East Saxons, or Essex. The council established for Essex in 1889 was formally awarded a grant of arms, bearing the seaxes, in 1932.

Plans for new homes

Cross-boundary development opportunity could help to cure housing shortfalll

A

PROPOSED agreement between Brentwood and Basildon Borough Councils, could pave the way for them to work together on the potential development of new homes to meet the Government’s directive of housing shortfalls. A Memorandum of Understanding could be signed between the two councils, to ensure both work together to investigate whether land to the west of Laindon and east of West Horndon, has any potential of meeting some of the development needs of both authorities through a cross-boundary development opportunity. It is due to be signed both

councils by November 4, 2014. The Localism Act 2011 requires Local Planning Authorities to cooperate on strategic, cross-boundary planning matters. Cllr Dr Richard Moore, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: “This memorandum of understanding will enable Basildon and Brentwood to investigate opportunities that could eventually lead to the development of much needed new homes in both boroughs. It is essential that we fully investigate potential areas for development properly to ensure we make the most of possible opportunities we have within

New homes could soon be underway

our boundaries.” Cllr Phil Baker, Brentwood Borough Council’s chair of the planning and development committee, added: “Having had an extensive consultation in Brentwood on the Local Plan last year, we have

listened to our residents concerns about protecting the villages. We look forward to working with Basildon to explore the best way of delivering the new homes our residents and their families need in the future.”

Tenant demand soars ESCALATING house prices and the rising cost of living is forcing would-be buyers into the rental sector making it an attractive business for buy-to-let landlords According to Balgores Property Group, the number of landlords renting out property in Essex has increased by 63 per cent year on year and tenants seeking homes has also risen by 38 per cent in the same period. One of the biggest demands for rental properties is in Chelmsford followed by Basildon, Brentwood, Hornchurch and Romford. For more details visit balgoresproperty.co.uk

NEWS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

LITTER LEARNING

P

UPILS from Shenfield School have taken part in a clean-up day to raise awareness of dropping litter. The event was part of Brentwood Borough Council’s environmental education programme in schools across the borough to keep the district’s streets clean. Year Seven pupils at the school in Alexander Lane were given a presentation during assembly about litter awareness, how dropping litter can spoil the appearance of a place, how it is avoidable and what can be recycled. Following the talk the 120 pupils were put into groups to collect rubbish from around the school and separated what could be

recycled into orange bags. The pupils are also taking part in an art competition to create a poster about the litter-awareness presentation and the winner will get a gift voucher. Brentwood Borough Council’s chair of the environment committee, Councillor William Lloyd, said: “The focus of the event was litter awareness and hands-on experience for the pupils because through picking the litter they realised how much is dropped. “They also learnt that about 60 per cent of waste can be recycled and so could lots of litter if it was put in recycling bins.”

NURSING

Skype aiding recruitment drive AS part of a major recruitment drive to address staffing shortages, Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust has found a beneficial way of hiring nurses from abroad, using Skype. The Trust has hired nurses from the Philippines interviewing them using the telecommunications service that provides video chat and voice calls from computers, tablets and mobile devices. They are also looking to recruit from European countries including Italy, Portugal and closer to home the Republic of Ireland, to fill more than 100 vacancies across the board including in elderly care, medicine and surgery and keep staffing levels on par. As well as bringing in foreign nurses, deputy director of nursing, Kathy French, told the Nursing Times that the organisation was ramping up efforts to recruit locally including promoting ‘return to practice’ opportunities and offering career development to others.

TRANSPORT

Investment call for rail route THE county’s main rail route between Norwich and London is in danger of becoming a ‘heritage line’ unless fundamental investment is made, MPs have been told. Businesses are nervous of relocating along the route as the service is unreliable, said Mark Pendlington of the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership. A £400m investment proposal will be handed to the Treasury next week. Mr Pendlington, also co-chair of the Great Eastern Rail Taskforce, told the Commons Transport Committee on Monday: “I have several examples of people wanting to locate and invest in East Anglia but they are very concerned about the transport links. “We see the golden thread of the rail line as absolutely fundamental to stimulating growth and bringing jobs and enterprise to East Anglia.” “Without investment we’re turning the Great Eastern line into a heritage line.’’ Commuters using the troubled Great Eastern line have been asked to join a campaign for more investment to allow faster trains which would cut travel times between Norwich and London Liverpool Street to 90 minutes. Campaigners want travel times of 60 minutes between London and Ipswich and 40 minutes from the capital to Colchester, shaving some 20 to 30 minutes of current journey times. “All we say to government is give us the reason to release the potential in East Anglia,’’ added Mr Pendlington.

APPROACH ROAD OPENS EARLY THE northern section of Colchester’s A134 Northern Approach Road has reopened ahead of schedule. The works, between Mill Road and Boxted Road roundabout, commenced in late September and were finished 10 days ahead, reopening on October 23. The complete Northern Approach Road scheme is expected to open early in the New Year and will link it to Axial Way and junction 28 of the A12.

HOENIX FM’S breakfast show has a youthful vibe about it with local teenager Joe Box taking to the airwaves every morning. Joe joined the station at the age of 16 when he was a Year 11 pupil at Brentwood School. A sporting fanatic who plays for both Great Burstead and East Hanningfield cricket clubs, he started out helping on the Saturday sport show. In August this year while still only 18, he stepped up to become the youngest breakfast show presenter in the station’s history landing the popular early bird slot between 7am and 10am. It’s a dream job for Joe following in the footsteps of presenters he’s grown up listening to such as Martin and

Su on Essex FM, Ray Clark former presenter on BBC Essex Breakfast and Greg James from Radio 1. “I always wanted to be a radio presenter, since the age of 12. I love chatting to the listeners about subjects

everyone can relate to from reality television shows such as X Factor and Strictly, to stories about my family such as when my Nan beat me at bowling.” Guests on his three hour show have included snooker and darts impresario Barry Hearn and more recently X Factor hopeful Lauren Platt (pictured with Joe). His dream guests would be Rihanna and cricketer Freddie Flintoff. Station chairman Paul Golder said, “It’s great to find people like Joe who have a natural aptitude for broadcasting. Community radio is a great environment for people to learn and develop their skills.” Tune into Joe weekdays 7am to 10am on 98.0FM and online at phoenixfm.com

Creating a splash Roberto Pavoni

Sporting star of the future B

No commission competition ESTATE agents The Home Partnership are running a free prize draw for zero per cent commission, if you sell or rent your home through them. Time is nearly up as the draw ends tomorrow (Friday, October 31), with the winning entry being picked on Wednesday, November 5. To qualify for the drawer visit the website for terms and conditions, homepartnership.co.uk

RENTWOOD swimmer Roberto Pavoni is one of 24 talented Essex athletes that have been announced as stars of the future as part of the Inspired Athletes’ Awards scheme. The scheme was launched last year as part of a legacy from the London 2012 Games, Glasgow 2014 and other major world championships to support local and potential Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games competitors to realise their sporting potential. It is aided by financial support from Active Essex, Essex County Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, in partnership with the Essex Athlete Foundation. Announced as a ‘Gold’ inspired athlete Pavoni, from Brentwood said: “‘I am extremely grateful to The Essex Athlete Foundation and Active

Essex for their support in the coming year. Their help will enable me to focus on my swimming performances leading into the World Championships in 2015 and beyond that the 2016 Rio Olympics.” Pavoni is thrilled to have the backing of the scheme as he recently lost his funding from UK sport which was his only source of income. “This was a huge disappointment to me after I won two medals at the European Championships and reached three finals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. I am now in need of a sponsor to support me over the next couple of years to allow me to fully focus on my swimming career. This Active Essex Award has gone some of the way to help me achieve this.’’ Essex has traditionally invested

in supporting talented athletes through a previous scheme, which saw eight of our athletes participate in London 2012 with three bringing home medals. The athletes will act as ambassadors for sport in Essex through the scheme which aims to support new talent by providing

funding and support. The funding enables athletes of different levels to gain support for their training and development and help them to achieve their ambitions. n For more details on the scheme visit www.activeessex.org/funding/ essex-athletes-foundation

GEORGIA’S LEGACY Butterfly Ball to raise funds for local children suffering from life threatening conditions

T

he fourth Butterfly Ball charity fundraiser is taking place at The Pavilion, Orsett Hall on Friday November 7 in aid of Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal (GTCA). Held in celebration of 14-year-old Georgia Cordery who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called Rhabdomysarcoma in June 2008 and sadly died in May 2010, the charity instigated by Georgia six months before her death aims to help improve the lives of children in Essex who are suffering from cancer and other life threatening conditions. It has since raised nearly £400,000 through fundraising events in and around Brentwood supporting local families coping with sick children, CLIC Sargent, SNAP, Little Havens and King George & Queen’s Hospital Charity among others. In November 2013, GTCA helped fund the

Next Friday’s event will see more than 330 people including celebrities such as former TOWIE favourite Lucy Mecklenburgh attending the black-tie bash to support the local charity. The evening will include a luxury raffle and auction with prizes donated including a ski chalet holiday, a personal training session with Lucy Mecklenburgh and her trainer Cecilia Harris, football match tickets and more. Georgia’s dad Peter, says “The Butterfly Ball is a very special evening and we are delighted that so many people are supporting Georgia’s legacy to live on. We are looking forward to a great evening of fund-raising.” The ticketed event has sold out, however other fundraising events are planned by GTCA. Visit gtca.info for more details.

AN ANCIENT oak tree reputed to be 800-years-old in Mistley, near Colchester, has been shortlisted as one of the 10 finalists in a Tree of the Year competition. Old Knobbley, who would have just been a sapling when the Magna Carta was signed in 1215, is possibly the only tree with its own website, Facebook page and now, a biography in the form of beautifully illustrated children’s book written by Morag Embleton. Run by nature charity the Woodland Trust, the winning tree will be pitted against others from around the world in an international competition next year.

Colchester Castle has a dark history

Follow a ghost trail at Hedingham

SSEX has always been where the action is, thanks to its proximity to London and its coast. Royalty, courtiers, movers and shakers have all passed through over the centuries, and some have never really left. Here are a few of the most haunted places in Essex that you can visit.

smugglers from the Essex marshes burned fires and lights to frighten the locals. Then a milkmaid from Castle Farm saw a ghostly woman in white and its reputation was complete. Now the English Heritage site (free entry) is a favourite spot for picnics.

Hadleigh Castle

Stay at: Anchor Hotel pub, Burnham on Crouch, with views over the River Crouch. Rooms are individually styled, meals freshly prepared and the bar has a wide range of ales. Four-poster bedroom from £45-£95 per night. Contact: 01621 782117; theanchorburnham.co.uk

It may be in ruins now, but the castle at Hadleigh was once fit for a king. Edward II used it as one of his royal residences in the 14th century and it became a favourite retreat of Edward III, who substantially rebuilt it. Stories of haunting began when

Layer Marney Tower

A man in full armour on horseback climbing the staircase is said to haunt this Tudor-built Tower, where both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I once stayed. Some say it is the first Lord Marney who returns to the romantic period home, hidden away between Tiptree and Colchester. The tower and other buildings have been occupied almost continuously, which possibly explains other ghosts allegedly spotted in the grounds wearing Victorian clothing. Closed until March, 2015.

Stay at: Swan House B&B, a pinkwashed period house in pretty Kelvedon. Double room from £75 per night. Contact: 01376 573768; swanhousebb.com

Hedingham Castle

Join a Haunted Hedingham walk tomorrow in the best-preserved Norman keep in Britain, on a ghost trail through the woods and around the lake of this 900-yearold castle. The Friday October 31 candle-lit walk costs £12.50 and must be booked, but there are said to be several ghosts at the castle who you might see at any time. After Friday’s event the castle,

near Halstead, will be closed until March except for special openings – so get your skates on.

01787 460261/hedinghamcastle.co.uk Stay at: The Pheasant, an awardwinning pub and restaurant in Halstead, has a Winter Offer of dinner, bed and breakfast in the Coach House, £189 for two. Contact: 01787 465010/ thepheasant.net

Harwich Redoubt Fort Ghost Hunting Nights are regular events at this 19th century fort, where a headless soldier has been seen, according to some. Ghostly footsteps, mumbling and whistling have also been heard. Now the Harwich Society organises ghost hunts to raise

funds for the fort’s upkeep. It was built to protect England during the Napoleonic Wars of the early 1800s, Although it is closed now until next May, there is a Harwich Maritime Heritage Trail through town that you can walk year-round.

Colchester Castle

Built by the Normans on the site of the Roman Temple of Claudius, the castle has seen some terrible sights. These include the death of Quaker James Parnell in 1656. The 20-year-old was imprisoned for his beliefs and now haunts the dungeon. There’s also hands-on displays of Britain’s history over the past 2,000 years.

he very thought of getting ready for a Halloween party fills most people with horror (pardon the pun). If you’re not heading out then you can resign yourself to a night in surveying the hordes of people taking to the streets in bad fancy dress costumes. But while Halloween may be a nightmare for some its another opportunity for the high street and high fashion houses, to make a quick buck. The fashion world is no stranger to marketing a novelty gimmick and even mainstream menswear brands have taken elements from the vamp, gothic and horror theme and worked them into their collections. Although there’s obviously a macabre side to Halloween, it also provides the opportunity to add some quirky fun to your wardrobe. This works by introducing some funky accessories like skull rings, spider brooches and bat cufflinks. But if you feel like embracing this look in true Val Helsing or Morticia style, then for him, perhaps try a velvet brocade blazer. The femme fatale can afford to let her hair down and be more adventurous, velvet and lace are key fabrics and the masculine tailoring silhouette, an example of this is the Todd Lynn coat from Debenhams, will channel your inner vamp. Open road danger ROAD safety charity, Brake, is backing the Department for Transport’s latest multimedia campaign, which highlights how country roads are deadlier than many of us think. The campaign reveals that three in five fatalities occur on country roads. In a survey for THINK!, the Government’s road safety campaigns unit, a worrying quarter of drivers admit to having had a near miss on a country road. Brake’s own survey revealed one in three drivers admit driving too fast for safety on country roads, by speeding, taking bends too fast or overtaking. Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake, said: “We welcome the focus the Department for Transport is giving to this vital issue.

ROAD SAFETY

Our campaign highlights that too many drivers are not treating our country roads with respect. ‘‘The so-called ‘open road’ is a dangerous road, often full of unexpected hazards. We are urging drivers to slow down on country roads, stay within limits and give extra thought when driving through villages and taking bends which can be worse in bad weather. “It’s about being prepared for the unexpected, looking out for people on foot or two wheels and respecting the countryside and other people’s right to enjoy it.” Brake campaigns for slower speeds on country roads through its Rural Roads not Racetracks campaign. AGUAR has a long and rich history of producing some wonderful sports cars over the years, the C, D and E-Type are fine examples, and have rightly been recorded as icons in motoring legend. Welcome then the newest, and naturally following the alphabetical time-line, the F-Type. Visual appeal is fundamental to a Jaguar and building on the design of the F-Type Convertible, the Coupe is stunning. Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar, said: ‘‘Creating a sports coupe is the purest of design tasks, and also the most challenging; get it right and aesthetically the result will be as dynamic as the car should be rewarding to drive. In the F-type Coupe, I believe we have got it right.’’ Jaguar’s expertise in aluminium technology, has enabled the whole body (apart from the tailgate, which is of composite material) to be made from this lightweight material and

three models are available: the F-Type, F-Type S and range-topping F-Type R, which complement the existing three-car Convertible model line-up. The whole structure is exclusively riveted and bonded – this manufacturing process emits up to 80 per cent less CO2, compared to welding a comparable steel body. Handling all this power to the rear wheels is an eight-speed closeratio Quickshift automatic gearbox, optimised for sporting performance and with full manual sequential control, either from the gearshift or steering wheel-mounted paddles. This Jaguar really does have some imaginative design touches. Walk up to the car and press the key fob, and the flush door handles pop out and are embellished with the Jaguar name on the top edge. Open the door and the stainless steel treadplates (£250 option) have the Jaguar name on them, which are illuminated with a welcoming blue glow. Once inside the leather and

Essex dealer suede cloth seats are cosseting, and with electric adjustments all round for both driver and passenger, it is very quick to find your own personal comfort zone. Press the dashboard mounted start button and V6 engine bursts into life and soon settles down to a silky purr. With a black headlining the interior is a bit on the dark side, but a way round this is to opt for the panoramic glass sunroof. It is an expensive option at £1,250 but is worth it just to lighten up the interior. Aircraft-style switches in front of the gearlever are smart and functional and press the heating controls above, and the central air vents above the centre console rise majestically out of the dashboard a very cool touch. Driving the F-Type is what a Jaguar is all about, and this focused

sports car does not disappoint. Even the base model V6 on test, priced at £51,250, delivers its power in a stunning way, with a vocal soundtrack to match. It is civilised around town, but press on up the rev range and it becomes a completely different beast with a satisfying howl. This can be amplified by pressing the active exhaust button which delivers an even more aggressive snarl, complemented with a distinct popping sound on the overrun. Once you reach 70mph the rear spoiler, built into the lip of the tailgate, rises to aid aerodynamic stability and balance front and rear lift. A bonus to this is the Jaguar name and leaping cat mascot can be seen in the rear view mirror. The sports suspension means a relatively firm ride, but it is pretty comfortable overall and the

steering has a nice weighted feel to it which encourages enthusiastic driving as it is very predictable over a range of road surfaces. On a 200 mile journey on motorway and A-roads, the V6 F-Type recorded a fuel consumption of 28.7 mpg, just shy of the official combined figure 32.8 mpg. The Jaguar F-type Coupe is sublime to drive and good value next to rivals. It really is

Called the Logan MCV, the base Access model for this large estate car costs £6,995. Before you get carried away, this is a no-nonsense basic vehicle, which is only available in white and comes with steel wheels, has manual windows, no air-con and just the wiring to install your own radio and manual locking doors. With a spartan but pleasant enough interior in different shades of hard grey, the seating is cloth covered, the only option on offer. On the plus side it does have a raft of safety features including anti-lock brakes

with emergency brake assist, electronic stability control and traction control. A driver’s airbag, power steering, rear wash/wipe with heated rear screen complete the standard equipment. Power comes from a 1.2-litre 75hp petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, pushing it to a leisurely 0-60 time of 14.5 seconds and a combined fuel economy of 48.7 mpg. At 4.492m (14ft 7in) long it is a big car and the load space reflects this having a boot volume of 1,518 litres with the rear down. THE UK road haulage industry is facing a massive shortage of drivers and, unless urgent action is taken, shoppers could be facing empty shelves at Christmas. That’s the stark warning from the Road Haulage Association (RHA). New RHA chief executive Richard Burnett said: “We are pressing hard for the Treasury to make funding available so that would-be lorry drivers can take the vocational driving and related tests that they so desperately need in order to pass and legally drive a heavy goods vehicle. “The economy relies massively on an effective logistics industry. If that efficiency is to be

maintained, it is vital that funding be made available now. “Such a scheme would ensure that UK growth and wealth creation is not impeded by a serious shortage of lorry drivers. He continued: “Ours is an industry with an ageing workforce. ‘‘With 45,000 HGV drivers due to retire in the next two years, it’s clear that unless Government recognises and addresses this critical issue, the economic growth will slow down dramatically. “The RHA has very strong support for this position from members with transport companies of all sizes – small, medium and very large.”

CLOSE ENCOUNTER

B

RENTWOOD Rugby Football Club have been struggling of late due to their long injury list but started this match with the look of a determined team. The forwards dominated early on showing no signs of nerves with Jed Roman leading from the front with some good tackling alongside dogged defence from Hobbs and Woodcock. Flanker Roman scored both of Brentwood’s tries

after the forwards and backs combined well. Both of which Henry Bird converted along with a good strike for a penalty. The Brentwood backs kept taking the game to Chingford who responded with some good defence of their own.

Chingford though, in the end were just too strong for the home team scoring three tries. Some good flair play from their back division being the difference between the two teams with the tries being spread amongst them. Brentwood gave an encouraging all round team display. Let’s hope the good form continues when they visit Eton Manor on Saturday.

Dogged Tyler seals draw Defeat after a tough game

B

RENTWOOD Ladies First team were away to Bromley & Beckenham for the sixth game of the season. The ladies were determined to go home with some points having won their last three games. Brentwood got caught with their eye off the ball and 10 minutes into the first half found themselves in a scramble in their own D trying to clear a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Lorna Parsons had to make several saves that unfortunately ended with a deflected shot into the foot of a Brentwood defender giving away a penalty stroke. Bromley & Beckenham capitalised on that opportunity and went 1-0 up leaving Brentwood on the back foot. Well-worked passing across the midfield from Natalie Gilder and Lauren Slater keep the pressure on until the half-time whistle. Brentwood finally got their single goal

reward and their point to secure the draw with just 15 minutes left of the second half when Lizzy Tyler fought for a scrappy deflected ball in the Bromley & Beckenham D. The goalkeeper was on the floor and the defence was frantically trying to get it out of the danger zone, but Tyler had such determination she kept going until it hit the back board. Bromley & Beckenham attempted to come back winning two more short corners that were well defended. Brentwood piled on the pressure for the final 10 minutes half but could not find the goal to steal the full three points.

B

RENTWOOD lined up on Saturday with a new-look side, missing several stalwarts including Captain Simon Teale, expecting a tough game from an in-form Old Southendians. From the off, Brentwood were on the attack. The game soon turned and became a closely contested battle, as Old South’s kept possession of the ball for long periods at a time. Brentwood were let off the hook as a goal was denied, although they failed to capitalise on their lifeline as a short lapse in concentration minutes later was all that was needed as Old Southendians took the lead. Brentwood managed to keep it together until half-time at 0-1, still very much in the game. Steven Naven looked to have set-up

Brentwood’s equaliser as he played the ball across the circle, but Aaron Doyle having lost his defender, took too heavy a touch on the deflection, sending the ball into the side netting. The half drew ever nearer its end and Brentwood became more frantic, desperately searching for a point. They gained a numerical advantage as an Old South player was sin-binned for a poor tackle, although this came to nothing. A final attack from Brentwood was not enough as the game ended in a disappointing defeat for the home side.

No answer from Leopards

New man Milner off the mark Soham Town Rngr 0 Brentwood Town 2 Rymans Division One North

SHERWIN Stanley scored his third goal in two games to help Brentwood Town to a 2-0 victory over Soham Town Rangers at Julius Martin Lane. The home side had the better chances but goals in either half from Stanley and new signing Marcus Milner, coupled with some fine saves from Ollie Bowles, earned Brentwood the three points. The Blues made three changes to the team that beat Redhill on Tuesday. Daryl Robson returned from injury alongside Jason Dobbs while Milner was thrown straight into the starting eleven after joining from Ware. Brentwood were on the back foot for most of the first half but in the 31st minute they took the lead with a header from Stanley with Milner wrapping the game up late in the second half with a powerful shot past the Soham ‘keeper. On the back of this win, Brentwood remain fourth in the league. They host Biggleswade Town in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

16 point run edges victory to visitors LEOPARDS will be aiming to bounce back after going out of the National Cup with a 70-61 defeat against London Lituanica at the Brentwood Centre, on Sunday. A poor third period proved to be the difference between the two sides as the visitors scored 16 unanswered points to take control and they never looked back. The home side had edged a tight first period 17-14 as Lucas Winegarner hit a hook shot to give them the lead at the first break. The teams were tied at 27 midway through the second period but a three-pointer from Will Ashby launched a 9-0 run, and the Big Cats went into the locker room with a 38-32 half-time lead. Byron Richards made it an eight-point game with the opening score of the second half but that was as good as it got for the hosts as the London side poured in 16 unanswered points. Albert Margai cut the lead to 52-46 at the final break, and a pair of treys from Ashby kept Leopards in touch before the visitors finished strongly to wrap up a place in the last eight. The Big Cats will look to open their league campaign with a victory on Saturday when they travel to Kent Crusaders. The sides met in the National Trophy in October with the Crusaders winning 78-65 but the

game has been ordered to be replayed by Basketball England due to an incorrect court, and the Big Cats will need a much better performance if they are to take the league points. Robert Youngblood’s Leopards team won all three meetings between the clubs last season but the Crusaders have made a positive start to the new campaign with four wins from six games.

Thurrock’s rocky road

E

AST THURROCK United were unable to replicate their FA Cup heroics as they bowed out of the Essex Senior Cup supported by BBC Essex with a 2-0 defeat at Billericay Town. The Rocks had disposed of higher-level opposition in the FA Cup on Saturday when they thrashed Bath City to set up a First Round Proper clash against Hartlepool United, and the visiting players broke away from their warm-up to watch the draw in the clubhouse at New Lodge. Ex-England international Ian Wright even interviewed boss John Coventry in the boardroom. That was as far as Billericay’s

hospitality extended, though, as a Richard Halle penalty and a superb solo effort from forward Afolabi Obafemi during the second half saw the hosts claim a 2-0 victory. Town dominated the second half when Glenn Poole came on as a substitute 61 minutes in and had a goalbound shot handled on the line by defender Jason Ring who was sent off. Halle calmly stepped up to convert the penalty to see them into the Fourth Round.

hen a one-bedroom terraced house in the former mining town of Brynmawr, near Ebbw Vale, in Wales, was listed for sale by a local auctioneer at a guide price of just £8,000 earlier this year, it was inevitable that the property would attract a bidding frenzy. But not everyone bidding would have predicted that it would sell for almost double its guide price. The final sale price of £15,500 may have surprised some people, but it would not have come as a surprise to the auctioneer. The guide price (an indication of the price that the property is expected to sell for), is often set at a low level in an effort to conjure up interest among bidders. This tactic can sometimes result in competitive bidding among buyers, driving the sale price significantly higher in the process. To avoid paying over the odds for a property at auction, it is important not to get carried

ith its commuter ease, good choice of schooling, and wealth of green spaces,

Waterford House

the affluent town of Brentwood in Essex offers an enviable quality of life for London professionals. As a result it has become one of the most desirable places to live in the area, with a growing demand for new housing there. And while the town is well-known for its links to the popular reality TV show The Only Way Is Essex, it has a great deal more to offer buyers besides its Towie glamour: Liverpool Street station is only 40 minutes away by train, and the M25 is just two miles away – yet Brentwood still manages to retain a surprisingly rural feel. There are plenty of green, open spaces within the town itself, and it is still pleasantly surrounded by woodland walks and open countryside

despite its proximity to London. Commuter links there are only set to improve further once Crossrail starts running in 2018. Several house builders have recognised Brentwood’s growing potential and are already responding to the increasing demand for new homes by developing on key sites across town. en-suite bathroom

Consero London has unveiled details of four new classical mansions in Surrey, with a combined completed value of circa £145 million

F

’Windlesham House’ is set in 20 acres of Surrey countryside

ounded in 2004, Consero London operates in London and the Home Counties and has built and sold luxury properties valued at over £1bn, priced

from £5million up to £60million. Some of the company s developments are ‘design and build’ commissions for private clients, the rest are speculative projects for open market sale. ’Chesham Place’ in Wentworth

All four of these new mansions for sale will be launched over the next 12 months, an indication of the company’s confidence in the

’Furze Croft’ in St George’s Hill

A very big house in the country

country house market. We took a detailed look at ‘Furze Croft’ in WhatHouse? Local last week. Located off East Road in the prestigious St George’s Hill estate in Weybridge, this is a newly built classical mansion, providing 16,193 sq ft of luxurious living accommodation set in 1.74 acres of

overlooking Wentworth Golf Course. Priced at £60million and offering luxurious living space across lower ground, ground and first floors ‘Chesham Place’ will be the most luxurious

to the capital. Confidence has been building in the super-prime country house market in the Home Counties as the buoyancy has rippled out of London. These new launches underline

this ‘best of British’ design expertise, quality control and craftsmanship, with carefully chosen local brand partners around the world, each of whom are selected because they are

beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds. Priced at £17.5 million, Furze Croft has an elegant main façade and side wings, approached through automatic security gates and a sweeping driveway. Complete with extensive leisure facilities, staff accommodation and garaging, Consero describes this eight-bedroom mansion as “representing a new generation of 21stcentury country retreats in this famous private estate.” Next up is The Mount , priced at £7.95million. This six-bedroom residence is set in landscaped grounds of 0.75 acre and provides 12,000 sq ft of luxurious living space over three floors. It, too, features a leisure complex with a 10-metre pool, Jacuzzi and steam room and a games room/private cinema suite on the top floor. Both these properties are launched buildcomplete with all main rooms beautifully interior designed and dressed by Consero Design, the company’s interior design and project management division, which creates bespoke interiors for private clients and this type of speculative project. Next year sees the launch of ‘Chesham Place’, set in 5.14 acres of landscaped grounds

newly built stately home ever launched into the Home Counties country house market. ‘Chesham Place’ is currently 40% build complete with the magnificent exterior facades and internal walls finished. Over the next 12 months the opulent interiors will be fitted out and interior designed and then in 2015 the completed stately home will be showcased to potential purchasers. The fourth mansion is ‘Windlesham House’, set in 20 acres of Surrey countryside in Windlesham, close to Ascot. This is another £60million stately home, in this instance providing 42,000 sq ft of living space with a main mansion and side wings providing luxurious living accommodation, a private leisure complex and extensive garaging facilities. Consero London is seeking a purchaser before they commence on the construction of the property. Robert Osborn, joint founding director of Consero London says: “’The local country house market in Surrey is lacking brand-new 21st century mansions of this quality and advanced specification. Our mansions are both good turn-key investments as well as providing outstanding country retreats close

our confidence in the luxury country estate market.” Consero London also plans to expand both domestically and internationally. The company’s domestic expansion will be focused on undertaking premium multi-unit or mixed-use developments within Greater London or other suburban locations within the Home Counties. These projects will include apartment buildings, regeneration projects and large family houses. The company is currently also undertaking a series of projects in ‘Prime Central London’ – the most expensive residential addresses in the capital. These include a residence overlooking Hyde Park, a £42million mansion in St John’s Wood and a detached villa overlooking Wimbledon Common. Internationally, the company plans to expand its brand through a network of associate offices across the world, who can provide local knowledge, construction expertise and artisans. This partnership will enable Consero London to deliver its brand of luxury residences to key locations around the globe. Using its existing London and Weybridge offices the company’s vision is to combine

recognised experts in luxury development who can advise on local planning, development, architecture, materials and highly skilled labour. Steve Glover, joint founding director of Consero London is excited about the new opportunities that this expansion will bring to the company: “[We have] amassed an excellent reputation amongst high-net-worth individuals through the creation of properties which provide good long-term asset value, quality and design. “We believe that there is a demand for the proven British craftsmanship, quality and expertise that we provide in countries around the world. Our clients in the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe are keen for use to create Consero properties in their local marketplaces, it’s a matter of us getting the right local associates and operating procedures in place to ensure the product quality for which our brand is renowned.” For further information on ‘Furze Croft’, contact Knight Frank on 01372 464496. Bridge Street by Churchill Retirement

Unfettered by jobs and healthier than ever before, many older people in the UK are seeking fun and a relatively active lifestyle to fill their retirement years. With fresh sea air, coastal walks, and many other healthy activities on offer, England’s South Coast provides the ideal spot for this type of lifestyle.

S

pecialist retirement developments tend to offer purpose-built, low-maintenance homes that encourage independence but also offer increased security and some communal facilities for social gatherings. In the popular coastal town of Bournemouth, for example, Churchill Retirement Living has 54 one- and two-bedroom senior apartments at Osbourne Lodge. With seven miles of Blue Flag beaches, Bournemouth offers a fantastic setting for beach walks and relaxing by the sea. Priced from £246,950, these apartments are from their superior ‘Premier Collection’: larger than standard, and many offering balconies, dressing rooms and en suites. The apartments combine style with practical features designed to make life easier and safer in later years. Singer Court

Ovens are located at a height that saves bending down, for example; light switches are illuminated; and taps have easyturn levers. For security there is a camera entry system and 24-hour Careline support system. Currently under construction just down the road in the coastal town of Christchurch, which adjoins Bournemouth, Churchill Retirement Living’s Bridge Street development will be made up of 44 one- and two-bedroom senior apartments, once again combining great design and safety in the kitchen and bathroom (prices yet to be released). The historic town’s harbour, beaches and nature reserves make it a justifiably popular tourist destination and a lovely place to settle down – and Churchill make the move easier with a range of assistance, such as help selling an existing property, or with the physical move itself.

South Coast offers idyllic retirement lifestyle In South Devon, about five miles from the coast and a couple of miles from Newton Abbot, Retirement Villages has 43 retirement homes set in five acres of grounds and gardens at The Priory near Abbotskerswell. All the properties, including both cottages and apartments, offer independent living for the over 60s. Many of the apartments are very spacious and have kept various original features such as stained glass windows, arched columns and sash windows. Property of the month is a luxury two-bedroom penthouse apartment overlooking formal gardens and countryside priced at £259,950 (leasehold). The popular holiday resort of Torquay is only six miles down the road. Not far from Torquay, McCarthy & Stone has now unveiled its show complex at its Singer Court development in the lively seaside town of Paignton, well-known for its sandy

Roseland Parc

beaches, pretty harbour and visitor attractions. The development of 54 one- and two-bedroom retirement apartments has a communal roof terrace offering panoramic sea views across to Torquay and Brixham, as well as security features such as a 24-hour emergency call system and camera entry system. Construction is nearly complete, with the first homeowners expected to move in soon. One-bedroom apartments cost between £190,000 and £279,000, and twobedroom properties from £288,000 to £399,000. In Cornwall, Retirement Villages’ Roseland Parc is a seven-acre retirement village of 59 properties offering a broad range of living options – from entirely independent to fully-serviced. Peaceful, safe and relaxing, Roseland Park is within easy reach of some of Cornwall’s most stunning beaches, just off the St Austell to Truro Road, and a twobedroom ground floor apartment there, offering far-reaching views, is priced at £380,000 (leasehold).
