TOP OF THE CLASS Awards prove Essex is a great place to teach and home to teachers admired nationally Sweyne Park School Headteacher Andy Hodgkinson and his award, presented by Vanessa Feltz

Issue 005 Thursday, 6 November 2014

I

T’S OFFICIAL, Essex has some of the best teachers in the country, as two Headteachers have each won a prestigious national award in the annual Pearson Teaching Awards. Established in 1999 by Lord David Puttnam CBE, the awards

are a means of recognising and celebrating excellence in education and receive tens of thousands of nominations, a realisation of just how vital success in education is to the health and wealth of the UK. Andy Hodgkinson from the Sweyne Park School

in Rayleigh, was awarded Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School at the ceremony held in London’s Guildhall last Tuesday and Benedick Ashmore-Short from Hamford Primary School in Walton-on-the-Naze picked up the same award in the

Primary School section. Host on the night historian and presenter Dan Snow said, “I’m delighted to be hosting this year’s Teaching Awards for Britain’s Classroom Heroes. They are an all-too-rare chance to celebrate some true heroes in our society.”

Cllr Ray Gooding, cabinet member responsible for education and lifelong learning at Essex County Council said: “I offer my congratulations to Andy and Benedick, it is an incredible achievement to win these awards.’’

‘English Heritage gives £200K grant to restore historic World War One Aerodrome

A

£200K grant has been signed to carry out urgent repairs to a First World War aerodrome at Stow Maries, thought to be last intact of its kind. The first Listed Building Heritage Partnership Agreement (LBHPA) in England has been signed between English Heritage, Maldon District Council and the Trustees of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. Situated in the rural Essex countryside not far from Danbury, it is the largest and most complete surviving Royal Flying Corps First World War aerodrome in Britain containing some 24 nationally important buildings listed at the second highest grade - Grade II*. It was built in 1916 as a base for

the Royal Flying Corps, a precursor to the RAF. The site was instrumental in defending London from the threat of German Zeppelin airships and Gotha bombers. In 1919 it stopped being used by the military and for almost 100 years was returned to agricultural use until it was saved from redevelopment by local people. Greg Luton, Planning and Conservation Director for English Heritage in the East of England said: “This Agreement is a big step forward and clears the way for a schedule of works to be drawn up by the Trust, so Trustees, volunteers and conservation architects can work on together to start to unlock the potential of this special former First World War Aerodrome.

Chairman of Active Essex, Gary Sullivan OBE hopes the campaign signals the start of a more active and healthy county. He said: “With over half the people in Essex not participating in sport or physical activity, we have a big challenge on our hands, but we are committed to ensuring people know how to get active and what opportunities are available to them.” One opportunity to get you off to a good start, is to join Simply Stride, a South Essex based walking group who have launched a women’s only session that will be free and run for six weeks. The sessions are every Friday morning until December 12 starting tomorrow between 10.30am and 11.30am at Hadleigh Country Park. ESSEX County Council has banned the release of Chinese lanterns from any of its buildings or land with immediate effect. The move has been introduced to prevent the threat of fires, danger to wildlife and unnecessary litter. It follows concerns raised about the dangers posed by the lanterns by residents and rural business leaders. From now on anyone caught lighting or releasing any form of sky lantern from a council-owned building, country park or other piece of land will be asked to leave.

O THAT brothers and sisters put up for adoption can remain together, Essex County Council is encouraging potential adopters to consider offering a loving home to a sibling group. As part of National Adoption Week which runs until November 9, it is this group of children who are among those who wait the longest to find a permanent family. Of the 38 children currently waiting for an adoptive family in Essex, 22 of them are part of a sibling group. Anyone who has a brother or sister will know that the relationship between siblings is special and

unique. Rob Saggs who has adopted three siblings said: “We decided to adopt a sibling group as we met them at an adoption activity day and fell in love with them. The value of keeping a sibling group together means the world to them, and to us.” Saggs stresses that breaking up sibling groups has to be one of the hardest decisions for anyone to make. “Keeping them together and giving them the opportunity to live life loved together is an amazing privilege.”

Last year the county council had a fantastic response from the public with 86 households approved to adopt, and a 50 per cent increase in the number of children being adopted compared to the year before. Councillor Dick Madden, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families said: “While we are absolutely delighted with the increase in children finding permanent families last year, we still want to hear from people who are willing to consider our priority groups of children.’’ n Find out more about adoption by calling 0800 801 530 or visit essex.gov.uk/

Boost to PE lesson funding PRIMARY schools across the East of England have been given a funding boost of £19 million to help transform PE lessons for tens of thousands of pupils. The PE and Sports Premium will go towards new equipment, offering a wider selection of sports and free after school clubs. Minister for Children and Families Edward Timpson said that primary schools were delivering better quality lessons as a result of the extra money, and devoting more time to PE. “We want children to get into the habit of playing and enjoying sport as it can help instil confidence and determination.” A typical primary school with 250 pupils will receive an allocation of £9,000 from the PE and Sports Premium fund. It is hoped the continued investment will create a sustainable legacy for PE and sport.

NEWS PUB OPENING

ECONOMIC GROWTH

Dairyman pulls a pint THE Dairyman is the name of a new JD Wetherspoon pub in Brentwood High Street. Due to open its doors for business on Tuesday, November 18, the name is a tribute to Davey’s Dairy a well-known dairy and one of six in the town centre, which was based at the 16-18 High Street site at the turn of the century until the 1950s. In the 1901 census, George Davey was recorded as a ‘dairyman’, living and working at 16 High Street. Brentwood Museum curator John Fryer admits the new watering hole’s name would be appropriate for the site but suggested the “majority of people wouldn’t know the dairy was ever there.” The revamp of former Pizza Hut restaurant has cost the well-known JD Wetherspoon pub chain around £1.2m. Around 40 jobs will be created. The pub will open between 7am and 1am every day of the week – including bank holidays.

The sound of Sunday Phoenix FM’s fast-paced lunchtime show is a weekend essential

A

HEADY mix of dance music, up-and-coming guests and the latest chart news are just a few of the X-factors that contribute to the fast-paced Sunday Lunch show on Phoenix FM presented by Tony Smith. A DJ since the age of 14, Tony moved into the mobile jock days spinning the tunes at weddings and parties. Nowadays he’s still laying down the tunes – though not on vinyl! For the past three years he has presented the Sunday Lunch show for Phoenix FM, Brentwood’s favourite local radio station and plays a a mix of current pop, R ‘n’ B and dance tunes from 12pm until 2pm. His show has quite a following and has contributed as a launch pad for many aspiring new acts. Most recent guests to grace the studio include female pop duo band Monroe and singer-songwriter Miss Sha who both performed an acoustic session of their latest tracks.

DJ Tony Smith with pop star Rihanna

Tony loves to see those who’ve been on the show flourishing in the industry. “It’s great to see acts come on the show as unknowns and go onto bigger things,’” he says. “When the Loveable Rogues first came on my show they hadn’t done much and a year later the talented trio were on Britain’s Got Talent and later signed by Simon Cowell.” Tony’s also a familiar face on the Brentwood and Essex pub and club scene DJ’ing every Saturday night at the Gardeners Arms in Hart Street. He’s also appeared on TOWIE on occasions. But as compere of two of the town’s largest events, the Brentwood Festival and the forthcoming Lighting Up Brentwood event is where he really comes into his own. “I’ll do a bit of singing here and there and get the crowds going.” Brentwood watch out! n Catch Tony every Sunday from 12pm on Phoenix 98.0FM. THEATRE

Teen designs show poster AS BRENTWOOD Theatre prepares to raise the curtain on its Christmas play Danny the Champion of the World on December 13, the show’s poster deserves a special mention as it was designed by a pupil from Brentwood School. Sophia Huston, 14, created the eye-catching illustration for the play which is based on the Roald Dahl story, as part of an educational project. Headmaster Ian Davies who also chairs the Brentwood Theatre Trust said: “This was great for both the school’s pupils and for the school and has helped the Theatre immensely by creating a unique image.” All of the artwork entered is on display at the theatre.

skin oil. Often your skin is producing excess oil because it’s not getting enough, so by providing it with the oil it needs it will stop the excess production.

OU’VE packed away your flip flops and shorts long ago but just as you embrace the winter months, your skin also needs some TLC. We asked Debs Scott, beauty expert and founder of the multi-award winning local beauty company SKN-RG based in Salcott near Tiptree, to talk us through the dos and don’ts of cold weather skin care.

Don’t forget the SPF

Don’t skip the scrub

The range of SKN-RG moisturisers

Cold and dryness puts a lot of stress on your skin because it dehydrates you, making it vulnerable to accelerated ageing. Upgrade to a richer, more protective and moisturising cream during the cold season, as opposed to hydrating vitamin rich ones in the summer months. Even though it’s winter those UV rays can still do some damage, so always use a dedicated SPF on your face too. Apply this after cleansing and toning. Our SKN-RG Organics Cellular Repair

Moisturiser is enriched with essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and omegas to nourish, boost and defend the skin. It is great to wear under all sorts of make-up or can be used alone for a flawless finish.

Do use oil

For those with dry or sensitive skin always use an oil or serum as well as your moisturiser. Even if it is usually oily during the warm season, you should still switch to a slightly richer cream during the colder weather. Don’t be afraid to use a specialist

Exfoliation is so important because by removing the old skin cells you are allowing all of your skin to receive the benefits of the products you are applying. No matter how fragile or sensitive, there will be a form of exfoliation right for you. Choose a microfine super rich mineral exfoliator which will gently nourish as it sloughs away dead dulling skin cells. If you’re not a fan of scrub, try enzyme technology which works to break down proteins so the skin can better absorb the components and promote cell growth and renewal. Try the SKN-RG Cleansing Melt which is a gentle non-alcohol and soap free facial cleanser. Or you could try our Restructuring night cream that works while you sleep.

F YOU hear the word yoga, you’ll probably think of young women bending their bodies into improbable positions without breaking a sweat. But the reality is much different with Alan Southgate, a 71-year-old from Hutton who took up yoga six months ago. “I try to keep fit with my rowing machine and do 50 press ups every morning,” says Alan. “But I was interested in trying something new. I saw an advert in the local paper and it was like a beacon going on.” Alan cares for Bina, his wife of nearly 50 years, who has Rheumatoid Arthritis. “I’m everything from chief bottle washer to the cook, so my patience can get a bit frayed,” says Alan. “I was really interested in the meditation aspect of yoga, too as I thought it would help relax me.” Since taking it up at Brentwood-based Step into Yoga, he now attends two classes a week and has found he’s much more flexible and he enjoys the relaxation. “My balance is pretty good but my flexibility has really come on. You’re just bending everything, even your toes. You have to wiggle your bum and your knees and it feels pretty good to be doing that in your 70s. “At first I felt a bit silly but now I really enjoy doing the meditation at the end of each class. I just feel totally relaxed and my mind shuts off completely. I often fall asleep too and have to get woken up at the end.” He also enjoys the social aspect too. “It gets me out of the house and I’ve met some really nice people,” he explains. There was one man when I started going, but now it’s just me and a room full of ladies, but I don’t mind! “Renate, my teacher is such an inspiration to me, too. She’s a lovely lady. I’m a believer

that if you keep fit in your 70s it will help you through to your 80s.” Renate Mullins owner of Step into Yoga (stepintoyoga.com) and Alan’s instructor, has been teaching yoga for more than 12 years and thinks it’s fantastic he has taken up the discipline. “Alan’s a very strong man, but while he was strong he wasn’t very flexible. We’ve really seen that improve over the past six months although it does take time. We’ve also been working on breathing and relaxation which is an important part of yoga.” While Alan is by far her oldest student, Renate is keen to take yoga into old people’s homes and also into schools, adamant that it really does break the age barrier. “My average students are woman in their 50s or 60s,” says Renate. “But I also offer classes to pregnant women and women with newborns. However I’m keen to take yoga into elderly people’s homes and also schools as the breathing, self-awareness and gentle movement really can help all ages.”

Classes

Yoga 4 U – Renate teaches a gentle form of yoga known as Sivanada Yoga 4 mums and pregnancy – As well as relaxation, Renate believes yoga can give women the tools and techniques to help them through birth Yoga 4 mums and babies – focusing on the mums and babies, there is the benefit of yoga but also some bonding time. There is even time for singing and coffee! Yoga 4 mums and tots – helps younger ones with self-awareness and relaxation

E

VER since the invasion of the two cool Scandinavian television dramas, Borgen and the Bridge last year, I have been ever so slightly obsessed with all things Nordic. The two leading ladies that empower skandi style are Katrine Fønsmark (Borgen) played by actress Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, an idealistic reporter who dresses in mainly conservative, soft tailoring, while Saga Norén (The Bridge) played by Sofia Helin who brilliantly portrays a forlorn detective with Asperger syndrome wears the same look throughout, her style is of a hard mannish silhouette mainly consisting of skinny jeans, mute tones and layers upon more layers. There seems no escaping Scandimania, it seems it is no longer just a trend anymore, but it has now become part of our lives, and you can’t walk down any high street without being influenced by this minimal look, even American giant retailer Gap has embraced this fever. The high street is in abundant of Scandinavian brands and multiples. H&M and Ikea have been around for decades, but new ones have popped up recently on our high street, Cos, a sibling brand of H&M epitomises the northern hemisphere another is &Other Stories, while brands like Acne, Monki and Cheap Monday offer great designer styles. To get the look the rules apply to both male and female, and the key here is all in the layering, while still managing to look effortlessly stylish. One of the various ways to get around the city is by pedal bike and this is the mode of transport for many of Scandinavian folk, so designers have cut the trousers with a higher hem to allow for this, a skinny Cara Delevingne in a Tux jean is also must, showing lots of ankle jacket, £65 Cigarette (mankle). Flat shoes or clumpy soles pants, £22 white shirt are also key as almost everywhere in from £30. topshop.com Stockholm and Copenhagen have cobbled stone streets. Colours are muted, with icy and earthy tones while black, navy and white are accents, so avoid bright colour and pattern, unless it’s a Sara Lund-style Nordic knit but, whatever you do, make sure you wrap and layer up, as winter is well on its way.

Effortlessly stylish Scandimania-style is leading the way on the street, says Mark O’Connor

6 Months In.….

The Directors’ Blurb

As you can see from the various shots above, after lots of imagination, hard work and PLENTY OF DUST(!), 6 months ago we transformed our new Brentwood branch and opened the doors to our new ‘home’. To celebrate the success of this first 6 months, we have decided to document various events that we have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in and more importantly managed to help raise profiles and funds for two charities – one was for essential cancer research, the other for funding and support for ex service men and women. We would like to take this opportunity to do some thank you’s - don’t worry, it’s not going to be an Oscar winning drone! We would like to thank Gillian and Stacy – their hard work, long hours (sorry!) and general commitment to making a success of the new office really is appreciated. We look forward to making the next 6 months an even more productive and exciting time for us all. Finally, we would really like to thank our old and new clients alike. Some clients that we have known for many years have bought and sold through our new office and we like to think that these relationships will continue to go from strength to strength. New clients – both purchasers and vendors – have really seen an insight to how we work at The Home Partnership. We have received many cards, gifts and kind words in the past 6 months and really hope that we can continue building home partnerships in Brentwood.

The office launch party …. Wow, what a night?!

On Thursday 29 May we hosted our launch party at the new office – over 40 guests joined us and we had a great evening of Pimms, Prosecco and OMG 2014 ale (more of that to come!). The sun was shining and everyone had a cracking night. Excellent food was supplied by another new local business – The Great British Raj Indian Takeaway on the Ongar Road and comes highly recommended – we even include a takeaway menu in our buyers’ moving in pack!

Special guests on the night.. Hot, hot, hot in Brentwood! We invited some of the Operation Market Garden 2014 chaps along, with “Vera” the ex-army truck. This group of “middle aged locals” from the Bricklayers Arms had been in serious training to re-enact a 75 mile march (in full 40 lb army kit) to Arnhem in September. THP were extremely proud sponsors of “Vera” and also bought several dozen bottles of their specially commemorated OMG 2014 ale produced for them locally by The Brentwood Brewery. Overall OMG 2014 have raised nearly £13,000 for Help for Heros and the ex Para’s charity, smashing their initial £10,000 target – well done lads!

You should all remember just how scorchio it was during the summer!? Gillian and Danielle went down to Brentwood station for the rush hour commute home and handed out over 150 of cold bottles of water to hot and sticky people … we hope that they were very much appreciated! Why? Just because we’re nice people.

The River Chelmer Biennial Dragon Boat Race 2014 THP raised over £2,000 for a cancer research charity by taking part in the River Chelmer Dragon Boat Race. Over 20 teams of 11 raced South event Woodham Ferrers along the river in this world cup themed – THP were drawn as Spain, hence the red and yellow theme! A great day was had by everyone involved! Making friends with the locals….. We know that our furry friends also enjoy the odd refreshment so we have a dog bowl outside the office for them to have a quick slurp! They’re also welcome here in the office so feel free to pop in mid-walk!

SHOPPING

T

HAT chill in the air can only mean one thing: ‘tis the season for Christmas shopping. But why trudge through the high street, when you can soar through the shops on a city break. We know the big hitters: Paris, Milan, New York … but what about the souks of Marrakech or the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul? Christmas presents are better with a story attached to them. Go write yours on one of these alternative shopping breaks.

Mate Oscar (oscar.room-matehotels. com) is a garishly funky design hotel, with a lively bar and restaurant, near the best shopping areas. Rooms from £229. Ryanair (ryanair.com) flies Stansted to Madrid from £54 return.

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

The souks of Marrakech are one of the most exotic shopping destinations in the world: a narrow maze of endless alleyways overflowing with spices, silk and priceless antique treasures. But that’s not all, shopping in Morocco is an adventure of the senses: expect snake charmers, belly dancers, acrobats and more. Just make sure to haggle: there are deals on every corner. Lawrence of Morocco (lawrenceofmorocco.com/01672 500 555) offers a four-night break staying in the luxurious Riad Dar One, within strolling distance of the souks. The price of £500pp includes breakfast, transfers and flights from London Stansted.

MADRID, SPAIN

For browsing bargains, flea markets can’t be beat. Especially when

there’s plenty for everyone, from priceless old books to cheap designer clothes. Check out the weekday Avendida de Felipe II and Cuesta de Moyano flea markets nearby for some great deals too. Room

Shoppers have been finding bargains in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul since 1461. Spread out over 60 streets, with more than 5,000 individual shops specialising in jewellery, hand-painted ceramics, embroideries and more, this labyrinth trove of exotic treasures is one of the largest covered markets in the world and attracts more than

BERLIN, GERMANY

When it comes to winter magic no one does Christmas quite like the Germans. Especially in Berlin, where more than 60 Christmas markets are scattered around the city centre. Banish the bah humbugs, pick up that perfect present and start the indulgences early with mulled wine, gingerbread and feasts of Christmas sausage. Highlights include the traditional huts and handicrafts of Gendarmenmarkt and the ice-skating and toboggan runs of Potzdammer Platz. Most markets open from the end of November, check visitberlin.de for details. Stay in the festive Hotel de Rome (roccofortehotels. com) for the Christmas rate of £260 per night, including breakfast. Ryanair (as before) flies Stansted to Berlin from £46 return. 250,000 visitors daily. But don’t worry: outside of that old world romance, modern Istanbul has enough chic boutiques to satisfy even the most cutting edge of consumers. The Imbrahim Pasha Hotel (ibrahimpasha.com) is near the Grand Bazaar and has views of the Blue Mosque from its roof terrace. Rooms from £130. Pegasus Airlines (flypgs. com/0845 0848 980) flies Stansted to Istanbul, £225 return.

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

The trendy residents of Sweden’s capital top the charts of Scandi cool, and so do their stylish stores. From Östermalm’s top end designers to Södermalm’s haven of hipster boutiques and vintage shops, Stockholm is a magnet for fashion fiends with an eye for unique finds. Stay in Swedish ABBA legend Benny Andersson’s superbly designed Hotel Rival (rival.se) in the heart of the city’s creative district, surrounded by art galleries, award-winning eateries and Stockholm’s coolest nightclubs. Rooms from £220. Ryanair (as before) flies Stansted to Stockholm from £40 return.

FOCUS ON

Brentwood Wine Appreciation Society

A taste for a fine vintage

I

F YOU’RE dreaming of becoming a connoisseur of fine wine, you could be raising a glass to the Brentwood Wine Appreciation Society. Established nearly 30 years ago, this monthly gathering of oenophiles is held to improve their experience, understanding and enjoyment of wine. Experts and specialist suppliers are a regular feature and talks are given on a selection of vintages from a particular country or region. There are comparative tastings too, of wines from the same grape variety from different countries and winemakers. Although supermarket wines are

DETAILS

tasted from time to time, the focus is on smaller producers, many boasting unique blends. This month’s meeting held on November 11 will see John Kernaghan of Liquorice Wines in Shenfield presenting wines from Western Australia with the emphasis being on the festive season. Wine pairings are also a focus, so if you aren’t sure what goes best with Turkey for example, this is a great way of finding out and ensuring your dinner parties go with a bang! Meetings are held on the second

Tuesday of most months at Shenfield Parish Hall. Expect a relaxed, social affair. However, the society does not sell wine nor is a drinking club but discounts and details of how to buy wines presented on the night are available. Membership is £80

covering nine meetings and including tastings. Occasional trips are organised too. The society has visited vineyards in both Italy and France, most recently enjoying a trip to Burgundy this summer tasting nearly 100 wines.

Potential members are welcome to come along to Tuesday’s meeting for a free tasting. To confirm your attendance please call 01277 219598. For more information about the society visit the website: brentwoodwinesociety.co.uk

LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW

n

VAUXHALL are to bring back the Viva name next summer with an all-new entry-level five-door model. The Viva will be the latest edition to Vauxhall’s small car range joining the ADAM and the Corsa supermini. Over 1.5 million Vivas were made at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire between 1963 to 1979. CALOR Gas has issued a product recall on all of its 6kg CalorLite cylinders manufactured between 2008 and 2011. These 6kg CalorLite cylinders are popular among caravan and motorhome owners as their lightweight construction reduces weight. Upon return, customers will be issued with a free of charge full replacement cylinder. More information on calor.co.uk/recall or call Calor Gas on 0800 783 4141.

Icon at new show THE INAUGURAL London Classic Car Show will page homage to a styling icon, celebrating the diamond anniversary of the Citroën DS. Held at ExCeL in London’s Docklands from January 8-11, 2015, the London Classic Car Show will kick-start the New Year with a feast of mouth-watering and rare classic cars. Many of these will be driven up and down The Grand Avenue, a highly original runway driving through the heart of the show. Today, almost 60 years after its birth, the Citroën DS still has the ability to turn heads like few other classic cars. Pronounced Déesse, the French word for Goddess, it was launched at the 1955 Paris Motor Show where its avant-garde design stunned show goers. Tickets are now available from the show website, thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk

S LUXURY cars go, the Tesla S is unique. Completely different from anything else in this premier executive section of the car market — it is totally electric-powered. Certainly, electric and hybrid cars are nothing new, all the major manufactures are now producing eco-friendly vehicles, but the Tesla S has moved the benchmark several places with a stunning piece of technical wizardry, with supercar performance to match. Now a new model has been added to the range with the introduction of a Dual Motor four-wheel-drive version with an Autopilot system, which will in the future offer autonomous driving. The California-based company, owned by PayPal creator Leon Musk, has only been selling cars in this country since June this year, and the introduction of this new model will further boost its zero-

CHRIS MANNING emission credentials. Stylish to look at, it reminded me at first glance of a mixture of Maserati Quattroporte and Jaguar XF, which is surely no bad thing. For the four-wheel-drive 60D and 85D models, the electric motor power is split 50/50 to both front and rear wheels, overall generating 376hp and using advanced digital technology, the onboard computer can detect wheel slippage in milliseconds,

transferring power individually to any wheel. A sport model, the P85D, takes the power output to an even higher level of 691hp, but splitting it differently with 221hp to the front wheels and 470hp to the rear. This sees the Tesla S P85D record a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. Dominating the interior is a huge 17in touch screen, which controls practically all of the car’s functions. It displays information about energy consumption, battery charge, sat-nav, audio system, heating controls and ride height when air suspension is fitted. With built-in 3G connection, Google maps can be displayed plus internet music and software updates to all the cars computer systems, using either 3G or your home wi-fi connection. Another thing that sets this Tesla S apart from other electric cars is its mileage

range. With a huge lithium-ion battery located under the entire car’s floor, the 60D (60kWh battery) will cover 225 miles, with the higher powered 85D (85kWh) 295 miles at a steady 65mph. Compare this to the Renault Zoe, which only has 22kWh battery and a range of 130 miles. Charging is a common bugbear with all electric cars, but the infrastructure of charging points is gradually improving across the UK. Tesla is busy setting up its own network of supercharger sites, which will allow owners to charge, for free and for life and replenish half a charge to the battery in 20 minutes. Four are already open in London, with others sited in Birmingham, Reading and Edinburgh. By December more will be open in Manchester, Bristol and Newcastle. It is a big saloon, which will easily seat five adults, plus the rear boot space can be converted into two extra child

seats, and with no engine at the front, there is ample storage space there too. Test drive venue was the new Tesla showroom near Gatwick airport. Two other showrooms are already open in London, with plans for Birmingham and Manchester. With the announcement from California of the fourwheel-drive model the night before, I tested the original rear-wheel-drive example. I have driven a number of electric cars before and it still takes time to get used to the eerie silence, which is only disturbed by tyre noise. Power delivery is phenomenal, with no gears

to change, it just keep going and going. You soon run out of road (and speed limit) amazingly quickly it feels like you are cocooned in a rocket ship. I never did attain full throttle on the wet roads around Gatwick, but it is the same with all powerful cars, it has to be treated with respect. Prices for the four-wheeldrive Tesla S Dual Motor start at £53,680 for the 60D, £61,080 for the 85D and £90,680 for the P85D. Expensive, yes, but this is no ordinary electric car. It will be appeal to business executives, who can claw back all the tax advantages the car has to offer. These include zero per cent Benefit In Kind, 100 per cent first year allowance for company purchase, exemption from London Congestion Charge and £5,000 Government grant.

SONNY ALI of Hornchurch ABC made a winning start to the season on the Hooks show beating junior ABA champion, Edward Berrett. In a very close contest Ali was pushed hard by the southpaw but after three close rounds the judges gave a split decision in Sonny’s favour. The club are now preparing for a trip to Sweden to compete in the King Of The Ring, a tournament Sonny has won gold twice in.

Shrimpers boss Brown to net new deal SOUTHEND United boss Phil Brown has said he is set to sign a deal that will keep him at the League Two side for the “next two or three years.” After a four-game winning run in September, Brown’s side went winless in five matches in October. But the 55-year-old says he is close to agreeing terms on a new a contract, having been in talks since the summer. He led Southend to the play-offs last season in his first full campaign in charge.

n

WEST HAM are the latest Premier League side to be linked with Olympique Marseille forward Andre Ayew. The Ghanaian international is out of contract in June and is refusing to sign a new deal and the Hammers, along with Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton are all interested in signing.

n

CHELMSFORD Chieftains, who lie second in the National League face Solent Devils on Sunday in a home match at The Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre. The Chieftains hope to get their season back on track on their own rink after a couple of recent defeats. The game starts at 6:30pm.

NOT ON THEIR MANOR! B

n

BRAINTREE Town extended their winless run to eight games as they were held to a goalless draw against Woking at the weekend. Woking midfielder Kevin Betsy was denied the opener by Braintree keeper Nick Hamann from 12 yards. Simeon Akinola then came close to breaking the deadlock for the home side but his long-range shot was well saved by Cards keeper Ross Worner. The striker then attempted to head in Dan Walker’s corner from inside the box but the effort flew over the bar.

RENTWOOD, lying ninth in the table, traveled to Wanstead, to take on unbeaten league toppers Eton Manor. Brentwood went into the game with 13 members of the 1st team squad unavailable due to injury or sickness, and thus fielded a cobbled together match squad for this fixture. Coaches Steve Killington and John Sproul were pressed into action and a late cry off saw captain Josh Woodcock having to move from second row to hooker. Manor dominated from the off and played most of the first half in Brentwood territory. The pressure soon told and the home scored after 12 minutes to record their first try. A few minutes later Manor went over again to make it 12-0.

Brentwood continued to battle and were rewarded when good play from Charlie Chambers allowed Kieron Skurr to crash over for a well deserved try. Eton Manor, then took the initiative back and scored further tries, including a penalty try, leaving Brentwood down by 40-5 at half time. Brentwood came out fighting in the second half and made it hard for Manor to add to the half-time score. Indeed it wasn’t until five minutes from the end with Manor when next crossed the try line, quickly adding two converted tries.

Sucker punch changes game PHANTOM GOAL SEALS IT A QUARTER of the way through the season and sitting in second place, Brentwood were keen to continue with their early success and get the win at local rivals Upminster. In an evenly contested first half both sides enjoyed plenty of possession with much of the game being played out in the midfield. Natalie Gilder created play through the middle linking with the forwards but unfortunately Upminster were able to cope with the Brentwood pressure. Gaining possession deep in their own half, the away team made the most of a quick breakthrough to score the first goal of the game. Brentwood continued to hold their own and created opportunities within Upminster’s goalmouth but were unable to convert any of them. Brentwood started the second half well but were hit with a sucker punch early on when

Upminster scored again to stretch their lead. The home team kept battling with Ruth Tilsey and Kendall Coleman producing great plays down the wings. However, forced into chasing the game Brentwood pushed forward to get an equaliser which left them vulnerable in defence. Upminster continued to counter attack and took full advantage sealing the win 3-0 late on in the game. In a disappointing result there were good performances from Brentwood’s defence with Emily Wright and goalkeeper Lorna Parsons sharing the player of the match award. n Brentwood will look to bounce back next week at home against Crostyx.

ith both teams on equal points in the league this was always going to be a tough game. Brentwood started brightly, probing the defence with some nice interplay, whilst their defence held strong as Bishop Stortford looked to catch the visitors on the counter attack. However, as seems to be becoming a habit, Brentwood conceded first again just before half time, courtesy of a slick Stortford attack which seemed to take the wind out of Brentwood’s sails. It got worse for the visitors early in the second period as they conceded again. Brentwood responded well, keeping possession and stretching the play. Kris Waites exposed the Stortford defence, running hard down the line and causing

trouble for their right-back. Brentwood, with slick passing halved the deficit soon after with James Duggan found his way into the circle and won a penalty corner. Steven Naven scoring with a powerful drag-flick. Brentwood drew level when with a deft flick through the goalkeepers legs by Jak Taylor and James Duggan stole in to finish from close in. Bishops Stortford, in bizarre fashion then took the lead with a phantom goal. Visibly deflated, Brentwood conceded another goal just before the final whistle.

Brentwood Twn 1 Biggleswade Twn 1 FA Trophy First Qualifying Round

But National Trophy place assured

I

T WAS a case of deja vu for Leopards on Saturday as they went down 84-70 at Kent Crusaders for their first loss in the group stage of the National Trophy. Robert Youngblood’s team had lost 78-65 when the sides met three weeks before, but the game was ordered to be replayed due to a sub-standard court. Will Ashby opened the scoring with a three and then hit a long jumper to put Leopards 5-4 ahead. That was as good as it got for the visitors, and although Dave Ajumobi also scored from beyond the arc, the home side took a 20-13 lead into the first break. Swedish centre Lukas Winegarner opened the second period scoring for The Cats with a trademark tip-in and hit a three midway through the period, but the hosts soon pulled away and it took a trey from Jordan Williams to cut the deficit to 37-27 at halftime. seven point game with three second half minutes gone, but despite veteran Ronnie Baker taking control late in the third period and Ajumobi draining a three, a 12-0 run from the home side saw them go into the final break with a commanding 63-44 lead. Albert Margai opened the fourth period scoring, but Leopards never looked capable of getting the margin into single figures as the home side closed out the win. Leopards are now second in the National Trophy group with a 3-1 record, and are definitely through to the last eight of the competition.

ROCKETS’ DON’T SCARE BIG CATS THE top two in last season’s Division One table meet at the Brentwood Centre on Friday evening at 8pm as Leopards host Reading Rockets. The Rockets are the Big Cats’ oldest rivals, and piped them to the league title last season on their way to a treble. Leopards won the 2012 league title on Rockets’ home court and also went on to complete a treble that season. Although it will be Leopards’ first league game of the campaign, the sides have already met in the National Trophy, with Brentwood born Will Ashby sealing a thrilling73-72 victory for the Big Cats at Rivermead.

Sub-standard Kent basketball court again angers Leopards manager

L

EOPARDS’ general manager Dave Ryan was angry after the Big Cats were again made to play on a sub-standard court against Kent Crusaders at the weekend. The Brentwood Centre based team lost 78-65 at Northfleet in the original fixture last month, but the result was declared void by Basketball England as

there was insufficient room along the side-lines. Ryan claimed that the court in Gillingham used for Saturday’s 84-70 loss in the replay was virtually identical. “I thought I had stepped into a parallel universe when I got there,’’ Ryan commented. “It was as if they had just moved the whole hall 10 miles down

the A2 and thought we wouldn’t notice.” “There might have been an extra couple of inches at each side as they didn’t allow any seating at the side, but it’s still at least a couple of feet too close

to the wall and it was incredibly tight on the side where the scorers’ table was. “We’re not bad losers, and we’re not appealing for another replay because we do not have the time, energy or money to keep travelling down to Kent. “There is supposed to be a minimum of 500 seats at the top level of

the National Basketball League, to go to a place where there are about 30 seats crammed in behind the baskets in laughable. “It’s not sour grapes, it’s dangerous and it’s unfair that while we work hard to provide excellent venues at the Brentwood Centre and Harlow Leisure Zone “Kent are falling short of the bare minimum.”

BRENTWOOD Town replayed Biggleswade Town last night (Wednesday, November 5) after their FA Trophy first qualifying round tie with the Bedfordshire side ended in a 1-1 draw at The Arena. Christian Mbulu returned to the starting line up as one of three changes to the side that beat AFC Sudbury on Tuesday. Daryl Robson came in for the suspended Danny Dafter and Danny Aldwinckle was handed his first start after impressing off the bench in the week. Biggleswade looked bright in the opening few minutes with Greg Morgan looking particularly threatening on the right wing, but it was Brentwood who opened the scoring after 12 minutes. Moments after Ian Brown produced a fine save to deny Sherwin Stanley, the striker beat the offside trap and latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from midfield, before curling the ball low beyond the keeper to score his fourth goal in as many games. Stanley squandered an excellent chance to add to Brentwood’s lead and the miss proved costly as Biggleswade drew level in the 40th minute. Ryan O’Rawe was unable to head clear a long ball forward and Bossman ran in behind the defender before firing an expert half-volley over Ollie Bowles and in at the far post. Brentwood started the second half well with Stanley forcing a corner from Brown and from the resulting setpiece, Mbulu had a shot blocked on the line. Morgan continued to threaten for the visitors and he created the next real chance in the 67th minute. Biggleswade poured forward near the end of the match and Bowles again pulled off a good save, this time from Morgan.
