Former Brentwood schoolboy gets call up for England against San Marino in Euro 2016 qualifiers

LEGACY GAMES

Olympic medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE gets behind sports day for Essex schoolchildren

O

LYMPIC Gold medalist Rebecca Adlington OBE will be guest of honour at a Legacy Games Day for Essex schoolchildren next Thursday. The 25-year-old swimmer will lead the mass warm-up and spend time with each group of children taking part in the sports activities at Hornchurch Sports Centre. The event will be the seventh in the Legacy Games Day series and

the first in the UK to feature the new Born To Move programme specially devised for children aged two to 16. Born To Move features skills such as dance, martial arts, plyometrics, core, yoga and sports training and is aimed at encouraging a life-long love of sports for young people. “Getting kids active is vitally important and my role on the day is to encourage the children to try something new and try their best,”

says Rebecca, who has supported two previous events. “Legacy Games Days are all about having fun through activity: if kids like it, they’ll keep with it and that’s how we can inspire the next generation to be active and healthy.” Schools in Hornchurch, Romford, Rainham and Upminster have been selected to take part in this year’s Legacy Games Day.

OUNG people in Essex will be offered training in trades such as plumbing and decorating thanks to £10,000 from The Swan Foundation charity. It will use the money to deliver a nine-week course for Year 11 students in Basildon, an area with higher than average unemployment. Pupils will be trained in electrics, plumbing, decorating and construction and get help towards a CSCS certification – an essential health and safety requirement for working on building sites. Pam Brown, principal of The Swan Foundation, said: “This new project will deliver expert training to young people, run by local employers working in building maintenance and construction trades. “We want to increase the confidence and employability of young people and help them to build a brighter future. We’ll also signpost young people to further training and employment opportunities that will be available as the construction of Beechwood Village, formerly Craylands Estate, gets under way.” The Swan Foundation was one of 63 projects across the East of England to share £500,000 via the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards For All programme.

Rising to the challenge

Made In Essex backs Phoenix 98 FM’s keep it local campaign

W

HAT Made In Essex is doing for local newspapers, Phoenix 98FM is doing for local radio. The Brentwood-based station was founded in 1996 with the aim to bring truly local radio to the town. Now we’re working together to bring the best of Brentwood and Essex to the people. We will be publishing Phoenix FM’s listings in each issue – and every Thursday Made In Essex editor Charlotte Civil will be broadcasting live to give you the tales behind our stories. Together we aim to reinvigorate the local community. Station founder Paul Golder says: “Local radio stations had stopped being truly local and were consolidating into larger radio groups with dozens of networked stations playing the same music and

Staff at Radio Phoenix, where snooker star Steve Davis has a rock show

with the same personalities. “The demand to find out what’s happening in your town never goes away, and pressure groups such as Phoenix FM sprang up – after a very long application process we took to the airwaves in 2007. Phoenix FM is a not-for-profit organisation with more than 40 volunteers producing original programming. “More than 3,000 people chatted on air last year. Local talent is a big part of our programming and we featured 219 live sessions, more than any other local radio station.” The

station broadcasts from the Brentwood Centre to Brentwood, Billericay and surrounding areas. Presenters include snooker champ Steve Davis, who has had a Monday night rock show since trial broadcasts in 1996. Tune in at 98.0 FM or listen online with the free Phoenix FM app from iTunes and Google Play. It is on all online radio services including TuneIn and Reach. n www.phoenix98fm.com has 6,000 pages of interviews, photos and archived shows.

X-TREME LAUREN

Factor in 17-year-old for the big time as she launches into talent show’s finals

W

E’RE right behind Lauren Platt – who celebrated her 17th birthday this week as she prepares to be one of X Factor’s 12 contestants in the live finals. Erin, from Billericay, managed to convince mentor Cheryl FernandezVersini that she was ready for the challenge. And this week, as she told her Twitter followers about the new car she got for her birthday, she said: “Feel like the luckiest girl in the world.” Lauren, whose parents are back together after splitting, thanks to Lauren’s X Factor experience,

added: “My family has been so supportive of me.” Lauren has been a hit throughout the show, getting four yes votes in her room audition and a standing ovation at the arena and is looking forward to getting a makeover before the live shows. “I’m excited,” she said. “I love change. I’ve been dyeing my hair every colour of the rainbow since I was about 10. I’d do whatever they wanted, within reason. Maybe not shaving my head. But I’m happy to experiment.” Lauren is looking forward to getting on stage for the nervejangling live performances each

weekend: “Getting out there and singing in front of 10million people – that sounds insane. “I’ll have nerves but if I didn’t, that would be really strange.”

NEWS Brentwood’s new market

moluptas ius

Keep Safe campaign A FREE Keep Safe scheme that runs throughout Essex for vulnerable members of the community is being extended by Brentwood Borough Council to the elderly, people with learning difficulties and those suffering mental ill health. Venues offering free use of a telephone to make emergency calls – for example if somebody has lost their keys, telephone or wallet, or are distressed in any way – will display Keep Safe stickers.

SHOPPING

Market grows into a new day B RENTWOOD’S new Friday Farmers’ Market launched to crowds of shoppers last week. The new High Street stalls come in response to the success of Saturday’s weekly combined market and farmers’ market. The Friday market has a slightly different focus to the

regular one, with an eclectic collection of stalls selling local food, drinks and produce complementing the more traditional traders of a Saturday. Stalls include fish from the Essex coast, meats from nearby farms and gourmet bread. Hot food on offer includes Mexican and Indian specialities as well as pastries and burgers. The market will also expand for special Christmas events on various dates throughout December. The organiser, Essex Farmers’

Markets, is also behind regular markets in Southend, Chingford, Wanstead, Highams Park and Gants Hill. The markets aim to revive old craft traditions and small-scale production where commitment and direct accountability contribute to the quality of the produce. There will also be live music and family entertainment for special events at the site immediately behind St. Thomas Beckett Church Ruins.

It is the finale to the five-year EU-funded Walls & Gardens Project, with 22 partners from Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the UK working together to preserve fortified towns and sites and their surrounding landscapes. Highlights from the Walls & Gardens Project include a touring exhibition about Tendring during the Napoleonic wars, public artwork, improved access to Jaywick Martello Tower and ecology work. The fun trail includes activities and games. Leaflets illustrating the route can be picked up from Essex libraries, tourist information centres and Jaywick Martello Tower.

Canvey gets flood cash from council

E

SSEX County Council is to spend more than half a million pounds to help Canvey Island recover from this summer’s flooding, and to prevent it happening again. There will be £470,000 to enable gullies to be cleaned more regularly so that rainwater can flow away

freely, plus £120,000 in council taxrelated support. Council leader David Finch said: “This is a sign of our commitment to alleviating the trauma and inconvenience of flooding.” Much of the money will fund a pilot project that may be extended to

other areas. Earlier, ECC allocated £75,000 from a £1million emergency fund to help four Canvey hotspots: Canvey seafront, Lotten Road, North Avenue and the town centre. Essex Highways is spending £1.4million on Canvey Island, including flood alleviation.

Pupils compete to eat more vegetables A UNIVERSITY of Essex study has shown that when it comes to getting children to eat fruit and vegetables, turning it into a competition could be the answer, although girls are more likely to respond than boys. The study, also involving universities of Bath and Edinburgh, involved more than 600 pupils aged six to seven and nine to 10 in 31 schools. Pupils were given a sticker for choosing fruit and

vegetables, with the one who had the most stickers at the end of the week getting an extra reward. Researchers found that although results differed by age, gender and background, overall incentives increased their consumption of the foods. Dr Patrick Nolen, of Essex University, said: “Interestingly, unlike other work on competition, we find girls respond more favourably to the incentive.”

TURNER PRIZE

Our coast is toast of the art world A FILM of the Essex coastline is in the running for this year’s Turner Prize Exhibition. Southend artist Tris Vonna-Michell’s film Finding Chopin: Dans l’Essex (2014), features the Essex salt marshes and is inspired by the French sound poet Henri Chopin who once lived where Vonna-Michell, 31, grew up. The artist’s other work, Postcript II (Berlin) 2014, is a slide installation based on a story about his mother’s childhood in post-war Germany. His work is on the shortlist for the Turner Prize, along with three other artists, and the winner will be announced on December 1. The film is being shown as part of the Turner Prize 2014 exhibition which runs at London’s Tate Britain until January 4.

LMOST 2,000 people watched a team of celebrities as a charity football match raised more than £16,000. The game, organised by Balgores Property Group, featured EastEnders’ Terry Alderton, Towie’s Darrell Privett and Jamie Reed, Big Brother’s Winston Showan and footballers including ex-West Ham midfielder Kenny Brown and current manager of Dagenham and Redbridge, Wayne Burnett. The match, at AFC Hornchurch, raised £16,652 for Haven House Children’s Hospice which supports children with life-limiting illnesses. Staff from Balgores offices, including Brentwood, Chelmsford and Hornchurch, took on the Allstars in the thrilling 1-1 game. Sold on the high street’s future Forget the internet, says Nick Dalton, estate agents believe traditional methods are the way forward

I

Nigel, Beverley and new office

N THE modern world of the internet, the high street rules for house sales. “There was a time when estate agency was all about going online – but people don’t want to do everything on the computer,” says Nigel Coyne, managing director of Keith Ashton, one of Brentwood’s leading agents. As such he’s just done what so many people do to their properties – given it a makeover. The main office – one of two in town along with another in Kelvedon Hatch – has a contemporary new look. “We wanted to make a more comfortable environment,” says Nigel, who runs the business with wife Beverley. “It’s about being able to pop in for a chat.” Walls are exposed brick, floors are wood and

there are comfy chairs. He should know what works. Barely out of his teens he was the country’s youngest member of the National Association of Estate Agents. Nigel has been in the business 30 years, most fronting Keith Ashton, and says a good shop window – his has iPad-like displays – is vital. It’s a sense of neighbourhood echoed elsewhere. “Banks are back in the high street,” he says. “And local newspapers are back in the community. That’s important.” Nigel is also certain that the new generation of local publications – such as Made in Essex – are the way to sell. “Often people don’t have any intention of moving until they see a newspaper,” he says. It’s for the community feel of

Brentwood and what it offers, that Nigel concentrated on the area. “There was talk of a property crash but we never really experienced that,” he says. “We’ve got Crossrail. Lettings are strong. There’s nice countryside, a nice high street – along with Shenfield – good trains and the M25. Brentwood has good restaurants and shops, so it is an exciting time. “People like to be part of the community, that’s why our coffee shops are so successful. As the longest-standing property agency owner in this area, I’ve seen Brentwood change over 30 years. Everything we used to have is coming back...”

On the doorstep: The medieval market town of Saffron Walden is great for browsing quirky independent boutiques many situated in distinctive half timbered buildings. One of England’s grandest country homes is nearby Audley End, regarded as one of the finest Jacobean houses. Its gardens are a great place to stroll the floral displays and walled garden.

For a real hidden gem – the Greyhound tops the bill. This country pub and restaurant is not far from Brentwood, nestled in a tranquil “off the beaten track” location. It is a great find, especially for that family gathering as it has a fantastic beer garden with huge terrace, shady parasols and acres of outdoor space. Savour a pint of golden cask ale and the very best seasonal pub food. On the doorstep: A post-lunch walk on Little Warley Common is great to walk off all that yummy food.

Men, add colour to your wardrobe. Mark O’Connor explains how to do it in a subtle way.

UST as the leaves are changing hue – so are the menswear collections, featuring an earthy autumnal palette of forest green, mustard yellow and rusty browns. Adding colour to their wardrobe can be a step too far for most men. By-and-large, men do not like to experiment with colour let alone brights, so the best way

to incorporate colour into a look is to wear it as an accent rather than head-to-toe. An example of this is to make an impression by selecting one or two pieces like a cardigan or a hat, this will prevent you looking like a children’s entertainer. Natural fabrics and textures also play a big part this season, and British heritage wool mills are experiencing a renaissance with tartan and check yarns being more popular than ever. Harris Tweed in particular is having its turn in the spotlight, collaborating with big brands like M&S and Joules. Tweed is being incorporated into accessories too, such as laptop bags, ipad cases and wallets. The stand-out piece this autumn is undoubtedly the motorbike jacket and Barbour have done a great piece that is reminiscent of one once worn by style icon and movie star, Steve McQueen. Whether you are heading out in town or country, here are some key pieces to stand you in good stead. Follow my menswear blog at www. Marksmanstyle.com and twitter follow @marksmanstyle

to work alongside some of my best friends and boyfriend and that’s great.’’ Here’s what Ferne had to say on looking good…

FOR GLOWING SKIN…

“All year round I’d say drink water. People think it’s just the summer that you need to keep your skin hydrated but being in doors with the heating on can dry out your skin.’’

STAYING IN SHAPE…

‘‘I exercise at least three times a week, maximum five, with a personal trainer – cardio and weights. I also go for 20 minute runs with my mum and I do squats every day. I sometimes train with Sam Faiers and friend Sarah in the evenings, but we just muck about!’’

DIET SECRETS…

‘‘I’m into healthy living. I was

brought up like that. My mum, if she bakes for example, does it gluten-free. We don’t eat a lot of red meat, but a lot of fish.’’

CONFIDENCE TIPS…

‘‘I always feel better when I have a tan and a big bouncy blow dry – there’s nothing better than someone doing your hair for you. I’ve always been quite body confident, so my advice is just work with what you’ve got. Everyone has their flaws but you have to think: Right, this is what I’ve been given and I’m just going to work with it. Dressing to suit your figure can really help.’’ Ferne McCann is supporting Asda’s Tickled Pink campaign to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign and Breast Cancer Care. Craig Revel Horwood being unusually generous

DANCE CRAZY

‘The jive is all-action, fast with quick flicks and kicks’

Craig Revel Horwood: Me and my big mouth STRICTLY Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has already dismissed several of this year’s competitors, accusing Judy Murray of “having two left feet” and comparing Celebrity Masterchef’s Gregg Wallace to a “wind-up toy”. But he’s equally as disparaging about his fellow judges, reserving his sharpest comments for Bruno Tonioli: “Bruno is short which is why he always stands up at the desk. And he wears platforms,” he revealed, tongue firmly in cheek, on a P&O Cruises Strictly Come Dancing cruise this summer. Of Len he said: “I have a lovehate relationship with him because he is very traditional and I like unusual music. He is a very high marker and I am not. There are many numbers between one and 10 and you can use all of them.” He added: “Len doesn’t consider the Argentinian Tango as a real dance.” Craig had nothing bad to say about Darcey Bussell, except: “Actually, she eats for England. People would be quite surprised how much food goes on her plate.” And as for former judge Arlene Phillips, he is very fond of her but drops the bombshell: “She was a mediocre choreographer.” Deborah Stone

ITH Strictly Come Dancing back in full swing, we’re all backing former Towie star Mark Wright to waltz right into the final. But you don’t have to let the celebrities have all the fun – why not put on some dancing shoes yourself? If you want to get ready to rumba, Strictly judge Len Goodman’s

Dance Centre is in Dartford, but there are plenty of Essex dance schools too. Here is a guide to some of the dances styles you’ll see on the TV show, with a suggestion for local dance classes.

JIVE TALKING

Disapproved of by the older generation since it arrived on America’s dance floors in the late 1920s, jive was brought to Britain by American troops during the Second World War and it never left. An all-action, fast dance with kicks and flicks, you can learn it with JiveSwing.Com (07946 396777) at the Essex Arms in Warley Hill,

Brentwood, each Wednesday. There are also classes at Southend’s Kursaal and in Chelmsford.

TAP ROOTS

All right, so tap dancing is not part of the Strictly format and now that Bruce Forsyth has semi-retired the opportunities for shoe shuffling will be few. Believe it or not, tap dancing’s origins are in Irish step dancing and Lancashire clog dancing with a little bit of African magic and a jazz beat. But tap remains a favourite among dance fans and a great way for people of all ages to keep fit – or get fit. There are adult classes at Ingatestone’s Pirouette

School of Dance (01277 221047/ pirouette-school-of-dance.co.uk) for beginners through to advanced, with no upper age limit. The Saturday afternoon classes are even pay as you dance. Set your inner Ginger Rogers or Fred Astaire free.

LATIN LOVERS

Cha cha, salsa, rumba, paso doble – these are just a few of the exciting dances South America has given the world. While the rumba is a smoldering romantic routine the cha cha (or “chah, chah, chah” as panto villain Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood would have it) is bright and lively and the paso doble – or

two step – is a Flamenco-influenced dance where the man represents a bullfighter and the woman the red cape. You can learn the lot at Dance Chelmsford (01245 602395/ www.dancechelmsford.co.uk), and you don’t even need a partner for the Latin line dance classes. Alternatively, try its Strictly New Beginners classes and learn the foxtrot and tango too. Classes are available at various locations.

BALLROOM BLITZ

The waltz is a ballroom dance with just three steps – so it’s good for beginners. It is regarded as elegant now, but back in the 1600s it was

rather racy. Based on French folk dances, Louis XIII banned it from court as immoral. Now adults can learn ballroom and Latin American at the Anderson Dance Group (01277 633509/andersondancegroup. co.uk) in Hannakins Farm Community Centre, Billericay.

ARGIE BARGIE

The Argentine Tango is renowned for its risqué movements, with the couple closely entwined up top while engaging in frantic footwork down below. Although it originated in Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century, it has been popular in Europe since the early 1900s when

wealthy Argentineans took it to Paris. It’s a passionate, powerful dance and now you can learn it in lovely Leigh-on-Sea. There are Thursday evening classes at the Davies Dance Centre (01702 715361/ www.daviesdance.pwp. blueyonder.co.uk) which are run in six week courses. The Dance Centre also runs ballroom and Latin adult classes on various evenings. n StrictlyCome Dancing is on BBC1, on Saturday, at 6.20pm

HE Open Day for Strictly Star Pixie Lott’s new Italia Conti Dance School in Chelmsford takes place on Sunday, October 12. It starts at 10am and is open to all ages from three years and up. Starting at 11am, the Open Day will offer an introduction to ballet, tap and modern, jazz, acting, hip hop/street dance, musical theatre, singing, songwriting and recording. The subsequent Saturday classes will start at 11am at Chelmsford’s Boswells School. Meanwhile the Brentwood girl is hard at work rehearsing as well as waltzing away with top scores on last weekend’s Strictly, leaving her and partner Trent Whiddon overall second on the scoreboard. During last Saturday show, Pixie and Trent waltzed to Norah Jones’s Come Away With Me, with judge Bruno saying: “Week Two, that is pure artistry”. Even Craig admitted they “make a fantastic partnership”. Wearing a roped silver bralet – an exotic bra-top – with a peach-and-white floaty layered skirt, Pixie and Trent earned an impressive 35 out of a possible 40, tying her at the top with EastEnders star Jake Wood and his partner Janette Manrana. n For more information about Pixie Lott’s Italia Conti School, visit www.pixielottitaliaconti. co.uk, call 07961 067275 or email admin@pixielottitaliaconti.co.uk

alk through the doors of Tides and reflect upon a different world, one full of bright, shiny things that add a new dimension to your home. The enchanting interiors shop is an Aladdin’s cave. Every inch of floorspace and all the walls are packed with displays of things that don’t so much catch your eye as shimmer with a silver glow. Owner Jo’s passion for out of the ordinary interiors comes to life in this unique array of furnishings. Sparkling crystal chandeliers, clock faces of all shapes and sizes – I even spotted one resembling Dali’s melting watch – and other even more quirky curiosities such as stag antlers, horse head statues and diamantecovered poodles. I particularly loved an iconic Marilyn Monroe portrait, her luscious lips embellished with red sequins. Perhaps most arresting of all are the blossoming displays of silk flowers that are dotted around, reflected wildly in the silverware and mirrors. Vases of crisp white orchids, pastel-hued hydrangeas and blood red roses are the perfect accompaniment to this bespoke collection of homeware. Pick a selection of stems and the staff will

arrange them for you. Want some inspiration to transform your home? After five minutes here you’ll be overflowing with ideas as there’s something that will transform every room. And if you need a helping hand from an expert, the shop’s interior design service offers everything from advice on fabric, style and design for curtains to wallpaper and carpet ideas. Tides also glitters from a string of celebrities. The Only Way Is Essex star Amy Childs has reportedly bought the party-sized table from the White Metal Range – it sells for a cool £1,399 – whilst the crushed velvet Mayfair sofa which comes in a choice of colours is proving a top seller. For those who want a more classic look, the driftwood and metal coffee table is irresistible. Collectors come here for the trendy JJ Adams prints, including one of a “tattooed” Kate Middleton and Batman and Robin in romantic embrace. Prints start at £435 but there’s something here for every pocket. Once through those doors, I guarantee you’ll be hooked. n Tides, 8 High Street, Brentwood (tideshomeandgarden.co.uk)

WEEKEND

Deborah Stone guides you through some of the best events that will appeal to all your senses

TASTE

THERE’S no better place to get a taste of Essex than at a local farmers market. Brentwood launched its new Friday farmers market this month in the High Street, to complement the existing Saturday farmers and retail market, but there are plenty of other opportunities to buy local produce in Essex. Why not try Barleylands farmers market at Barleylands Farm Park and Craft Village near Billericay on Saturday? The farmers market takes place every second and last Saturday of each month, and is free to visit including parking. It runs from 8.30am to 12.30pm and offers local pork, beef and wild boar plus smoked and fresh fish. There are also paid-for attractions including the farm plus indoor and outdoor adventure play areas. Free, 01268 290218; www.barleylands.co.uk

SEE

BRENTWOOD Theatre features a play based on one of the most extraordinary events of the Second World War this weekend: The Diary of Anne Frank – the story of the young Jewish girl and her family hiding from Nazis in occupied Amsterdam in 1942. The play, presented by The New Venture Players, reveals the tensions and conflicts between the family and four others who were also being hidden by Mr Frank’s former

poets Frank Dullighan, Rikki Livermore and Rosie Sandler. The evening features Tim Cunningham, Caroline Gilfillan and Blake Morrison. Tickets: afternoon session, 1pm, £5; evening session, 7pm, £8.50. 01245 606505; www. chelmsford.gov.uk

employees. The Diary of Anne Frank is on October 9-11, starting at 8pm. Tickets: £12 (concessions £9.50) 01277 200305; www.brentwood-theatre. co.uk

HEAR

THE Essex Poetry Festival takes place at Chelmsford’s Cramphorn Theatre this weekend, with a Big Day of Poetry on Saturday. There are afternoon and evening sessions, starting with an Open Mic in the afternoon and readings from Essex

DO

ALWAYS wanted to tell the difference between a field mushroom and a bloodred webcap? Join the Fungi Walk at Brentwood’s Weald Country Park on Saturday and you will at least discover the local specialities lurking in the undergrowth. There’s a similar event at High Woods Country Park near Colchester on Sunday. The Brentwood walk with expert Mary Smith is aimed at identifying local mushrooms and toadstools and children over 12 accompanied by an adult are welcome – although dogs are not.

Got an Event you would like to publicise? Give us a call

On Both events need to be booked, and take place from 2-4pm in Brentwood and 10am-12pm in Colchester. Tickets: £4 (both events) 01277 261 343; www.brentwood.gov.uk 01206 853588; www.colchester.gov.uk

VISIT

SOUTHEND has great shopping, excellent live music venues and a good selection of restaurants for all budgets. But even in autumn the seafront is its biggest draw and its traditional entertainment continues to please all ages. As well as being home to the world’s longest pleasure pier, every Saturday night this month there are free fireworks on the seafront starting at 7.30pm and they continue until mid-November. The last fireworks night, on November 15, starts at 5.30pm. www.visitsouthend.co.uk

HIS ancient medieval grazing marsh bordering the Thames on the London-Essex border was a military firing range for about 100 years until 1996 . The RSPB has been restoring the Thames corridor’s vital green lung to its former glory since 2000. It now has the biggest flocks of wintering dabbling duck, godwits and curlew in the London area

GET THERE

and, with its boardwalks, is one of the easiest places to see some of our rare birds. There is a shop, café, wildlife garden and adventure play area. A full events programme offers something for everyone, with access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There’s something different to see all year round. In autumn keep an eye out for everything from waders (ringed plovers,

oystercatchers, golden plovers, and redshanks) to birds of prey (peregrine, barn owl, kestrel and sparrowhawk), plus other birds such as water and

rock pipits, little egrets, kingfisher, and other wildlife like red foxes, stoats and weasels. There are birdwatching walks every Wednesday

BY TRAIN: The neares station is Purfleet. BY BUS: Ensignbus 44 stops near the reserve entrance at New Tank Hill Road (01708 865656). BY CAR: The reserve is off New Tank Hill Road (A1090) in Purfleet

and Friday, plus Sunday lunchtime wildlife walks. Wild About Art (Oct 11 to 18) is a creative session run by a professional tutor. rspb.org.uk/rainhammarshes

Stars & Suduko ARIES ARIES (March 21 – April 20) Loving to work hard and play hard, this special enthusiasm draws others to you this week. Certainly, there are many who need your inspiration and encouragement. Perhaps you are involved in a community or creative project? Working as part of a team right now brings the kind of recognition and satisfaction that you deserve. At this time it is possible for you to learn a lot about yourself by how you react to others.

LEO LEO (July 23 – August 23) A life-affirming situation midweek shows you just how much you are appreciated. Those who have come to rely on your wise words seek out your company. If a busy time means not being able to see friends, then why not have a get-together for them all at the weekend? If you want romance, look for it then. Before you decide that someone does not like you, ask yourself why they are holding back.

TAURUS TAURUS (April 21 – May 21) Sharing your knowledge and showing others how to appreciate what is around them is right up your street. With your creative streak in full flow you can now embark on a long-awaited journey. This is an inner rather than a physical journey although it will improve your overall wellbeing. When you give you do not need to take and this builds your confidence. A romantic weekend brings revelations. Are you really ready for so much passion?

VIRGO VIRGO (August 24 – September 23) Being kindhearted and generous, you want everyone to be happy. Of course, that isn’t possible but this week you encounter someone who loves to be grumpy. Take their criticisms with humour and goodwill. It makes you more appreciative than ever of your own ‘glass half full’ attitude! When romance calls you may feel like closing the door. Ask yourself why. Maybe you could at least peek out of the curtains?

GEMINI GEMINI (May 22 – June 21) This week you see someone who has not been given the usual chances in life to grow and achieve. Your help can bring so much to them and others like them. This may be giving time rather than money, but that is so much more valuable to you all. Wanting to advance a new relationship is easier if you know something of the person’s likes and dislikes. Delve! You are driven by a feeling of belonging.

CAPRICORN CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 20) Making gains at work could all come down to keeping up to date. Are you happy to just plod along as you are? Nothing wrong with that if it is what you want. However, there are rich gains to be made by studying new technology and applying it to the everyday. See where this could be used. You have a sharp brain but perhaps you are not making the most of it.

LIBRA LIBRA (September 24 – October 23) Giving your honest opinion may upset some, but you want to do the right thing. A loved one is feeling indecisive about a long-term conundrum. Having given your opinion before, there is a reluctance to comment. Finally, however, you feel the urge to do what is needed. It may be some weeks before appreciation comes your way for efforts made now. However, your main objective was not to gain praise, was it?

CANCER CANCER (June 22 – July 22) Think ahead now to keep busy and take care of your wellbeing in the coming winter. Small changes to diet and a different kind of exercise can have a big impact. Sharing new experiences with others helps your confidence to grow and brings more sheer fun into your life. We can all do with a bit of that, can’t we? An optimistic outlook rubs off on others and makes you more likeable and fun to be with.

SAGITTARIUS SAGITTARIUS (November 23 – December 21) Improvements to your diet and wellbeing come about with some effort. Being busy is not unusual but making time for your health is paramount. Where you see prejudice it is upsetting. Sometimes it is hard to understand others, especially on this note. It may be necessary to just agree to disagree. Avoid letting others upset you on petty matters. Some things and people cannot be changed. It is a sad reality.

AQUARIUS AQUARIUS (January 21 – February 19) Several developments this week are surprising. An unexpected change in a situation has not happened overnight. Ask yourself why this was missed. When busy, it is easy to overlook some basic but important matters. Approach with caution something that seems too good to be true. Allowing past experience to colour the future is fine if it is black and white. However, be prepared to let a little variety into your plans.

SCORPIO SCORPIO (October 24 – November 22) Giving one person more responsibility can see them blossom over the coming months. There is a strong parallel here between yourself and someone close. By knowing this you also know how best to support them. Money should not be such a problem now. Give more attention to your health and leisure time and take stock of your position. Allowing yourself time and space to gather your thoughts is important.

PISCES PISCES (February 20 – March 20) Demands on you this week would faze someone of lesser strength. You, however, are made of strong stuff! Taking one day at a time you will soon find small solutions to stop anything developing into a big problem. You may have put a hold on romance for various reasons but is it now time to take the brakes off? A bit of good luck comes rather later than expected. ‘Ford’s award-winning 1.0-litre three cylinder engine is a popular powerplant for the compact EcoSport SUV’ By

CHRIS MANNING

F

ord’s compact SUV EcoSport is part of its ‘One Ford’ global philosophy. It was developed in South America, where it has been on sale since 2004, and now the second generation is being unleashed in Europe. The world car tag extends to the fact that 16 countries within the Ford empire provided input to the EcoSport’s design and engineering. The result comes at a time of increasing demand in Britain for small SUVs that are practical and affordable. Based on the Fiesta and B-Max platform, the tried and tested running gear uses familiar engines from the Ford range, with the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost 3-cylinder petrol being the most powerful with 125PS. There is also a 1.5-litre Duratec petrol with 112PS and sole 1.5-litre Duratorq 91PS diesel, all mated to 5-speed manual gearbox, with a 6-speed automatic option on the 1.5-litre petrol. Trim levels of Titanium and Titanium X are the two choices, with prices starting at £15,995 for 1.0-litre EcoSport in Titanium trim (which was the model on test) rising to £17,495 for the 1.5-litre diesel Titanium X. Visually, the exterior is a mix of new and old. The front grille is striking in design and gives the EcoSport presence, but at the back the addition of the spare wheel mounted on the rear side-opening door is a bit of throwback and does mean you have to be careful when parking as it does need a wide opening area. The upside is that boot space is unhindered and offers 333 litres of load space. Fiesta owners will be familiar with the

dashboard layout and mobile-phone centre console, which has more curves and creases than a Klingon forehead. Hard plastics have been used instead of the soft-touch variety in the Fiesta and slightly cheapen the interior. The seats are hard, too, and I found the seat bases slightly on the short side, but there is plenty of adjustment on both seat and rake and

reach steering wheel, and I soon found the comfort zone. Storage is excellent with 20 stowage bins dotted around the cabin, plus a slide-out drawer under the passenger seat and a cooled glovebox. All the doors have drink storage slots, but I did find you had to firmly close the doors when exiting the Ecosport, as a casual approach meant they did not latch properly. Out on the road the ride is good, with the high driving position offering good allround visibility and the 1-0-litre three-pot engine offers surprisingly

BOY RACER W

HEN somebody told Ian Thomson he was too old to race, it was almost like a red rag to a bull. Spurred on by this comment, he decided to prove them wrong and return to racing after a gap of more than 40 years. Now just turned 68, Ian started racing back in 1963 in a 1000cc Mini in autocross. In those days it was held across the county on farmers fields, on grass surfaces, and pitched the driver against the clock. Ian’s Mini, affectionately known as “The Screamer”,

as for most of the time it would be on maximum revs, was eventually replaced by a Ford Fiesta and a move to rallycross where Ian scored a number of successes competing at UK events in the mid 1980s. Unable to get racing out of his blood Ian, from Stock, is now racing a unique Fiat 500 in autograss, on a quarter-mile oval track on loose surfaces. To build the Fiat 500, Ian turned to lifelong friend and ex-rallycrosser Barry Hathaway, who now also races in autograss

By

Chris Manning and is based in Stow Maries, with Barry and Ian regularly competing against each other at the local Essex track of Concord Autograss at Cold Norton near Chelmsford. Building this special Fiat 500 has taken about 500 man hours. First a space-frame chassis is constructed from steel tubing, welded together to produce a strong safety cell for the driver. Then this is mated to the Fiat 500 body, which has been stripped of excess metal and weighs around 520kg, about half the weight of the

averate Fiat 500. Power comes from a rear-mounted Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike engine powering the rear wheels. This 1340cc engine produces 197bhp and propels the Fiat 500 to a recorded 0-60 time of 1.95 seconds, probably making the fastest Fiat 500 in the world. Ian recently was asked to display his Fiat 500 at the celebration of 50 years of tractor production at the New Holland tractor plant in Basildon, owned by Fiat Industrial since 1990. ‘‘I was surprised by how much interest it raised at the tractor factory. I suppose we do similar things, we both plough up fields, but in a completely different way.’’

They reached the National Finals having won the Essex and South Regional titles. Shenfield despatched The Wavell School from Hampshire in the semi final. Shenfield batted first in the final

against Shropshire’s Meole Brace School. Shannan Drewe and Maizi Garwood opened the batting and quickly set about posting a big total. Both retired after only three overs with the score over 40 and putting their team in a strong position. Sophie Clark continued the onslaught needing only five balls to reach her 20. She dispatched the ball to all parts, hitting three sixes (the only sixes hit by any girl all day).

This gave Shenfield a total of 83-1 from their seven overs. The hugely impressive Imogen Southcott claimed two vital wickets in her opening over. Bowling around the wicket she proved too quick and too accurate for Meole, bowling both openers with unplayable deliveries. The other bowlers backed Southcott up with very accurate bowling, taking wickets quickly. The game was effectively won

before the last over was bowled; however Ellen Hoad finished the game in style. She capped off a wonderful day by taking two wickets in the final over. Mr Bennett, who coached the team, remarked: “We are very proud of the girls’ rapid progress and achievements in cricket this year. They love their sport and we love working with them because they are so keen to learn.”

BRENTWOOD TOWN FC

LEAGUE CUP WIN FOR THE BLUES

B

RENTWOOD Town fought back from 2-0 down in the first seven minutes to beat Heybridge Swifts 4-2 in the Robert Dyas League Cup on Tuesday night. The home team went ahead in the fifth minute, doubling their lead two minutes later, but Yeshaya Lomotey struck back for Brentwood at 22 minutes with a rebound goal the

Heybridge keeper could not control. Shad Ngandu equalised for Brentwood after half time, on 54

minutes and Christian Mbulu put The Blues ahead with tap in at 62 minutes. Then on the 84th minute Robbie Rees sealed the win

with a goal from 25 yards to take Brentwood Town into the second round The win follows a 3-3 draw away to Waltham Abbey last Saturday. Missing two penalties proved very costly for Town as they dropped to 4th in Division One North. Brentwood took the lead in a highly entertaining match through a Courtney White strike early on in the

second half, Alex Akrofi missed a chance soon after to double the lead after his penalty kick was saved. Waltham Abbey made them pay with two quick goals from Jason Hallett and James Peagram to make the score 2-1 to Abbey Akrofi then made amends for his earlier miss with two quick goals to restore Towns’ lead. Waltham levelled the

score at 3-3 through Halletts’ second goal of the match late on. With a chance to win the match from the penalty spot in the dying minutes, Brentwood captain Martyn Stokes put the ball wide of the goal and the game finished level with the points being shared. n Brentwood Town take on Brightlingsea Regent at home on Saturday at 3pm.

CHELMSFORD City racecourse, rescued from dereliction, has been granted 56 fixtures by the British Horseracing Authority for next year. The only race course in Essex, formerly known as Great Leighs, has been closed since 2009, but it has now been take over by a new company with joint owners including BetFred. Managing director Phil Siers says: “We are scheduled to start racing on, or around about, the middle of January. “We’ll probably have a couple of meetings in January to give us a small start into the racing season, but we’ve already been guaranteed 56 fixtures next year from the BHA so there will be a full programme.”

downsizing

Find your new home at Whathouse.com

Are you ready to downsize? Welcome! nce the domain of empty-nesters approaching O retirement age, downsizing is now on the minds of a range of UK homeowners, with the average age of a downsizer just 40, and

WHY DO PEOPLE DOWNSIZE? The average homeowner releases £97,722 by downsizing, and doing so can provide you with significant savings towards your retirement. In total, downsizers release around £7bn of equity in their properties each year. With property prices on the increase, many parents are downsizing to provide their children with the opportunity to get on the housing ladder. More than three million adults aged 20-34 currently live with their parents, and with the average age of a first-time buyer now as high as 36, downsizing to fund a deposit is likely to increase in popularity.

one in four aged between 26 and 35. The financial benefits offeredby downsizing can be attractive, with over 55,000 households a year currently downsizing and 2.3m households

Younger downsizers are attracted by the opportunity to cut mortgage repayments, gas and electricity bills and council tax, as well as the chance to live a more minimalist lifestyle. According to research by Lloyds, 43% of downsizers move to a smaller property to cut their bills. A more traditional form of downsizing comes from older people who perhaps feel their home has become too big to manage and want to move somewhere that offers care and support as their needs change.

THINGS TO CONSIDER The process of downsizing could cost you as much as £10,000 by the

DECLUTTERING Stephen Burke, director of downsizing direct.com “One of the main barriers to downsizing that older homeowners frequently tell us about is having too much ‘stuff’. They say they need help clearing out their home before they can even think about moving. There are a number of agencies and charities that can help with decluttering. But there’s a lot that homeowners can do themselves. “Making a pledge to yourself to declutter and setting aside time has to be the key starting point. Have a plan and allow a few months before

aged over 55 considering doing so. Here we take a look at the main issues surrounding this hot topic and speak to people who have been through the process.

time estate agent fees have been factored in, eating in to valuable equity. This is a serious drawback to downsizers hoping to use their lump sum to fund their retirement. Those who tend to make the most profit from downsizing are homeowners in expensive areas such as London or the South East, who are selling up to relocate to a more affordable region. In a market where house prices are on the up, downsizing sees homeowners trade future capital growth in their current property for an immediate lump sum. Moving in to a smaller home can be an emotional wrench, and involves parting with

possessions that may not fit in a smaller home. A change of lifestyle may also be required when moving to a property with greater space restrictions.

EQUITY RELEASE Equity release is a popular alternative to downsizing, but it’s not for everyone and needs to be carefully researched. Equity release allows homeowners to unlock the capital value of their homes in the form of a loan, while continuing to live in the property for the rest of their lives. On death, the proceeds of the loan interest are repaid. The average customer releases £57,800.

MARKET COMMENTARY you move; don’t leave it all to the last minute. Begin with one room. Some people suggest creating four boxes/piles in the room: throw away; give away; keep; relocate. Consider each and every item in that room and which box to put it in. “It shouldn’t just be a chore. Decluttering can be very liberating and a new start, just like downsizing. It will empty your home and your mind and make it a lot easier to clean as well. A decluttered home will also be much easier to sell because it looks fresh and full of space. Whatever you do, don’t leave decluttering until after you move home. Why pay someone to move ‘stuff’ you don’t need?”

CASE STUDIES BUYING Two couples have recently downsized to three-bedroom properties at Graylingwell Park by Linden Homes in Chichester, Essex. Richard and Susan Shord “Although we were downsizing from a larger property with very large gardens, we still wanted a three-bedroom house as we often have friends and families to stay. We also wanted a good-sized garden, but something more manageable than our previous plot. We have already attended a garden party and a number of barbecues. It’s a very good and relaxed way to meet our new neighbours.”

Peter Ford, chairman of Rangeford Holdings, on the current market conditions for those looking to downsize or move in to retirement property: “People are now more confident of selling their current property and being able to downsize. This year, approximately eight million baby boomers have reached 65 years of age and many of these, who are frequently empty nesters, are likely to be seeking to transfer their wealth. “The modern downsizer is looking to maintain the living and

Roy and Frankie Todd “A great benefit of buying a new home is the low maintenance. Everything is finished to a very high standard and you can move straight in without having to do any work. You really notice people putting a lot of effort in to get to know their neighbours here. We can’t wait to get involved in all the events.”

RENTING Pamela Fixter sold her flat in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, after 36 years and decided to rent in retirement. “I was at a stage in my life when I wanted to sell my property and downsize so that I could release some capital to fund my retirement. Initially,

social spaces they have enjoyed all their life while reducing the number of bedrooms, gardens etc. They are in a stronger position because they can sell the current property but weaker as there is strong demand and short supply of great new homes. The market needs to develop and the client group needs more aspirational products that encourage them to right-size earlier. “The current retirement property on sale tends to focus on downsizing, offering smaller properties where the release of cash is paramount. There is a real shortage of properties that older people want to live in rather than have to live in through economic necessity.”

I was thinking of buying a retirement property, but when I looked at the prices I realised that renting would be more affordable. Girlings Retirement Rentals offered me an apartment to rent for life on an assured tenancy and this option immediately appealed as it gave me the same level of security as ownership.” “Since moving here I am financially better off. I pay a monthly rent, which includes the development service charge and general maintenance costs, so there are no unexpected bills. As a tenant, I don’t need to worry about property maintenance and spending my spare time fixing anything that goes wrong. This means I can now relax in the comfort of my new home and enjoy the additional social benefits of living in a retirement community.”

I

’ve never really “got” Twitter but under advice from a number of friends and colleagues I recently reactivated my account (keithosborne69, if you’d care to follow me) and am starting to get to grips with it all. I’m not a Luddite but sometimes it takes me a while to catch on to some of the latest IT trends. Social media has changed the life of many of us to one extent or another, for good or bad, but I still have the underlying feeling that it’s led to us all shouting at each other across the ether rather than engaging properly on a more personal level. For this reason alone, I think that this month’s inaugural WhatHouse? Show in Brighton is worth the trip for serious house-hunters as it provides a rare opportunity to meet a number of companies face-to-face under one roof. It’s an occasion that the internet simply doesn’t afford for one of life’s most significant purchases. Uncertainties and queries can be sorted out in moments in a conversation, in a manner that electronic media can’t replicate and, more importantly, you can really get a sense of someone’s credibility and trustworthiness in a one-to-one situation that you simply can’t online. In which case, you may want to defer your decision to follow me on Twitter until after you’ve met me at the exhibition! In the property market at large, there appears to be a consensus of opinion that the market is slowing down a little in London and the South East and continuing a slow but steady rise elsewhere in the country. Altogether I think this is a good thing. The capital and Home Counties passed their 2007 peak some while ago; elsewhere, property values are still catching up to precrash levels. The common factor everywhere is still the dearth of properties on the market: not enough existing homes being put up for sale and insufficient new properties being built. Uncertainties over interest rates are being blamed for the current inactivity of would-be vendors, unsure as to whether the grass would be greener in a new home with a new, but potentially more expensive loan, or whether they should stick with the home and mortgage they have. There are significant numbers of downsizers in the current market, however, who own their homes outright and are releasing equity by moving somewhere smaller. Rising interest rates will only be good for the lump sums they end up with in their savings accounts. Enjoy this issue of WhatHouse? and happy house-hunting! The Home Partnership have successfully sold (STC) this home in Margaretting and require all types of properties in the area to meet demand. Not all agents are the same – please call for open and honest advice regarding your home and your moving plans.

Of course, if everyone were to take this stance the entire market would grind to a halt! However whilst we don’t have a magic wand, we would encourage sellers to have a little faith – as soon as you find a buyer, you immediately elevate your buying power. Estate agents will be in a position to offer you new properties as soon as they come on to the market, often ahead of public marketing and popular property websites. This also enables you to have a stronger negotiating position for when you do find a property that you like. Finally, you may well find that once you are committed to your sale, you will have a clearer focus on which house will actually suit you best – it’s easy to “dilly dally” when there’s no pressure!

Margaretting

D OL

One of the greatest frustrations associated with moving house in the current market is that you may feel exposed if you sell your home before finding a new property to move to. It is reported that nationally, estate agents average less than one new property a week to the market – on this basis, it is easy to see why sellers become nervous at the general lack of supply. Many home owners turn down a good offer on their house because they have not yet found ‘the right property’ and worry that they could in effect become ‘homeless’ however if your buyer wants your home, they will be willing to wait.

LAND & PROPERTY AUCTIONEERS

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS ! With property auctions becoming more popular than ever helped by

25th Anniversary this year, have long been market leaders in this field.

programmes such as ‘Homes under the Hammer’ there has never been a better time to consider buying or selling your property at auction.

Here, we talk to one of the companies Directors, Sam Kinloch, to find out more about why you should be seriously considering taking the plunge.

With business fundamentally about weighing risk against profit, with the right knowledge buying property at auction to renovate or let could be a good bet. High risk strategies may produce an overnight fortune, while lower risk strategies can provide a relatively secure income along with capital growth in years to come.

‘With thirty two separate auctions a year covering Kent to Cornwall I am always staggered by the huge variety of properties we see on a daily basis. It has been my pleasure to be involved in the sale of some truly fabulous properties over the last decade including Sea Forts, Nuclear Bunkers, Stately Homes and many many more’.

Founded in 1989 to supply a high profile auctioneering facility to private clients, independent estate agents, corporate and statutory bodies Clive Emson Auctioneers, who celebrate their

He added, ‘It is important not to pigeonhole auctions as solely a method of selling unusual or problematic property, far from it! While these do sell remarkably well it is important to stress that the large majority of our business comes from selling more traditional lots. With the better availability of funds, lack of supply and continuation of low interest rates fuelling an already strong market where better to put your hard earned cash?

Sam Kinloch, Emma Attrell & James Emson

Whether you’re looking for somewhere to fix up or wanting to achieve a good return on your investment, a Clive Emson Auction may just be the place to do it’.

“It is important not to pigeonhole auctions as solely a method of selling unusual or problematic properties.”

With the next Sussex and Surrey auction being held at the Hilton Brighton Metropole on 22nd September please contact the Clive Emson team on 01273 571853 should you need any more information on buying or selling at auction or if you would like a copy of the current auction catalogue.
