SPECIAL beer has been created by Brentwood Brewing Company to promote a charity trek by a group of regulars from the Bricklayers Arms in Stondon Massey. Called Operation Market Garden, the brew marks the 70th anniversary of an Allied Forces Second World War operation to parachute soldiers behind enemy lines to capture strategic bridges in Belgium/Holland including one at Arnhem. Gary Middlehurst, 50, a regular at the pub, wanted to create something special to mark the occasion as well as fundraise for The Parachute Regiment Charity and Help for Heroes. The group has exceeded its £10,000 goal, raising more than £13,000 so far, with money still coming in. The brewery also presented Gary with a cheque for £200, a donation from the sale of OMG beer. Eric Pickles, MP for Brentwood and Ongar, who joined the Bricklayers Arms lads at the brewery last Saturday said: “Clearly this is a tremendous achievement and a wonderful way to raise money.’’ The MP was on hand to see the launch of another beer from the brewery, based at Calcott Hall Farm, Ongar Road. The Poppy Beer will be on sale in local pubs and British Legion clubs, with donations from sales going to The Royal British Legion. Brentwood Brewing Company MD Roland Kannor said: “We’re very proud to support the OMG Bricklayers Arms lads and their charity mission. They’re planning something for next year and I might even be persuaded to tag along.’’

FEAR OF DOGS

Handling hounds A

N ESSEX dog training centre is at the centre of a new nationwide pilot scheme to set up special classes for children who have a morbid fear of dogs. Cynophobia is a living nightmare that totally controls a child and their family’s way of life. The Essex Dog Training Centre in Brentwood has held these unique and free classes for children to combat the problem for 20 years. Director of training at the centre, Roy Dyer, has been working in collaboration with Dr Annie Swanepoel, consultant psychiatrist with the NHS, after a year-long study by psychiatrists from Harley Street, the NHS and Hertfordshire University. Dog training clubs and trainers around the UK have shown a very positive response. Once all the appropriate dog clubs and trainers have been selected, a two-day meeting will take place at the Essex Dog Training Centre in Doddinghurst Road, Brentwood, showing a full cynophobia class in action. ENERGY SAVE THIS WINTER ENSURE your winter fuel costs stay affordable by signing up to the Big Community Switch campaign. The energy-saving initiative is being introduced by Essex County Council again after being successfully launched last November. Thousands registered for a better deal on the cost of gas and electricity after the city, borough and district councils helped Essex residents combine their purchasing power. Councillor David Finch, Leader of Essex County Council, said: “We are helping residents with the cost of living. The four and a half thousand Essex householders who signed up for our energy switching campaign are saving an average £209 on their energy bills.” He added: “I am pleased to announce we are running the campaign again this winter to help residents save more money.”

HEALTHY FOOD REAPS GREAT REWARDS A UNIVERSITY of Essex study has shown that when it comes to getting children to eat fruit and vegetables, turning it into a competition could be the answer, although girls are more likely to respond than boys. The study, also involving universities of Bath and Edinburgh, involved more than 600 pupils aged six to seven and nine to 10 in 31 schools. Pupils were given a sticker for choosing fruit and

vegetables, with the one who had the most stickers at the end of the week getting an extra reward. Researchers found that although results differed by age, gender and background, overall incentives increased their consumption of the foods. Dr Patrick Nolen, of Essex University, said: “Interestingly, unlike other work on competition, we find girls respond more favourably to the incentive.”

TRIAL OF LED STREET LIGHTS

Joey Essex and a ‘Reem Halloween’ JOEY Essex swaps his home county for North Wales this Halloween for a special spookfest. The TV favourite visits haunted Bodelwyddan Castle in Denbighshire as part of his ‘Educating Joey Essex’ series on ITV2. Watch Joey as he investigates the paranormal on October 31, 9pm.

LED street lights are set to be piloted across Essex but a senior councillor has warned it may not lead to lights going back on overnight. Seven areas have been identified for the pilot, including Colchester town centre. Councillor for highways at Essex County Council, Rodney Bass, has revealed a trial project will begin next spring. Only lights not under part night lighting will be used. The scheme is in response to a scrutiny committee about part night lighting. It follows widespread opposition from residents regarding street lights being switched off between midnight and 5am except for in town centres and busy road junctions. Part night lighting is set to save the authority an estimated £1million annually and reduce carbon emissions by more than 8,000 tonnes per year.

HIS is the first photograph of Essex-born artist Grayson Perry’s most ambitious work yet. The eccentric Turner Prize winner has designed the architectural gem, which mixes tradition with his quirky vision, to be set off by its fabulous Essex setting. Titled simply A House in Essex, it sits on the banks of the River Stour estuary near Wrabness – and will soon be a holiday home. Visitors will be able to

appreciate the fairytale creation which also has a touch of the Russian empire about it with its golden roof. Its curved gable windows, double height living room and tapestries are all part of Perry’s eye-catching master plan. The house has been designed to evoke a tradition of wayside and pilgrimage chapels and fits with Britain’s history of follies. But aside from its extravagant touches it is a home that sleeps four and has the conventional two

bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom. It is also the setting for a number of works by Perry exploring the unique character and qualities of Essex. Perry designed the house with leading Londonbased design company FAT Architecture as a holiday rental for the Living Architecture company. The House in Essex is expected to be ready for bookings by spring. More information: livingarchitecture.co.uk

JOY AS GODSPELL RETURNS TO STAGE College opens its doors to auditions for community production in Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End

H

AVERING College of Further and Higher Education is holding auditions to play Jesus – and all the other roles – in Godspell at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, next May. The college in Hornchurch, is staging the community project, involving schools and colleges from the Borough of Havering. Anyone from six to 22 can audition – learning disabilities and/or physical challenges are no barrier. “It is a modern day production with a nod to the original where Jesus wore a superman T-shirt,” says director/producer Peter Dayson a music lecturer at the College. The first British production in 1971 made a star of David Essex. “This will be our ninth year

of running West End productions and Godspell was our very first show. We are doing it with a new treatment so I am setting it in a park with trees, bandstand and flowerbeds. “We are looking for someone to play Jesus and Judas/John the Baptist – a role which is played by the same person – and there is still time for more schools to audition. There are also roles for technical and backstage crew.” The college has a history of award-winning productions and holds Artsmark Gold status from Arts Council England. Last season’s production of Synergy Street received rave reviews and saw Havering College named Best Business in the Community at the 2014 Havering Business Awards.

Today 85 per cent of patients are cared for in their own homes or care homes; in 1984 the only care was at the hospice itself. The hospice cares for 3,000 patients a year and needs £6.5million a year to carry on doing so so. It aims to be in a position to cater for increased demand that comes from serving an area with a growing population, one that is living longer which means more patients. To donate go to: sfh.org.uk

Suzi now and, inset, with the Fonz in Happy Days

Nick Dalton chats to the rocker celebrating 50 years in showbiz

S

HE’S the all-American, leather-clad rock ‘n’ roller with a style all her own. And yet when the tight black jumpsuit is unzipped she puts her feet up at her moated Essex manor house. Suzi Quatro might be the bassplaying pop star who inspired a generation of women musicians and who made many a teenage boy sigh, but she leads a country lifestyle when she’s not in the spotlight. And Suzi is very much still centre stage with the glossy The Girl From Detroit City, a picture-perfect hardback book and 4CD set with 82 tracks charting her music from early teenage years right up to today, released this week. Suzi is 64 and the collection celebrates 50 years in the music business, a career that shows no signs of slowing down: from her one-woman show, Unzipped, on Radio 2 a couple of weeks back to a 23-date Australian tour after Christmas (still wearing that leather jumpsuit). Essex is where she comes

to wind down. “I have a crazy lifestyle,” she says, from her country pile. “When I come off the road I like to go somewhere completely different, which is here. In the middle of nowhere, between Chelmsford and Braintree – you don’t come here uninvited because you won’t find it. This is my sanity. “I’ve been in this place since 1980. I found it on the cover of Country Life – I looked at it and said ‘There’s my house’.” Suzi bought the house after a string of hits in the 1970s including a No 1 with her debut single, Can The Can, along with 48 Crash and Devil Gate Drive. At the time she was married to her guitarist, Len Tuckey, and the house is where their children, Laura and Richard, grew up. “Both of them live 15 minutes away and Laura brings my grandchildren, Amy and her foster son Taylor. But I’m from a big family and I want more – I’m waiting! Suzi has been married to German concert promoter Rainer Haas 21 years; she has her Essex bolthole, he spends most of his time in Hamburg and they meet when they can, often at their flat in Majorca. Suzi admits to not playing a role in local life, preferring instead to disappear behind the gates. And she’s been doing that for a while. This, after all, was where she returned as an international TV star from her role as Leather Tuscadero in 1980s US sitcom Happy Days, appearing alongside Henry ‘The Fonz’

Giveaway Winkler. Usually it is the place for grand Christmas celebrations but this year she and Rainer are holidaying in Rome. “It’s the first year that I’ve done this since I’ve been in the house, but it seemed like the time to try it,” she says. “I wanted something without the works. It’s usually all me – I put up the tree, the presents are spilling out the door. It takes a lot of preparation and I thought let me just have one Christmas where I’m not doing it all.” Meanwhile Suzi continues to create. The title track of her package is a brand new song that is coming out as a single. And, she says: “I’m writing a song even as we speak. And I have a poetry book coming out next year, Through My Eyes, that’s going to surprise a lot of people.” Suzi is also about to emerge as

When Leanne Camplin, 41, of South Woodham Ferrers decided she would lose weight for her 40th, she didn’t waste any time

S

QUEEZING into black leggings for an apresski themed get together, Leanne Camplin, 41, didn’t feel in party mood. “I rarely wore leggings,” she says. “Seeing my chubby size 20 legs squeezed like sausages, I felt miserable.” At 38 with three children (Thomas, 23, Jodie, 20, and Louise, 12), Leanne had let her health slide. “I barely exercised,” she admits. “Plus it was all too easy to agree when my husband, Stuart, called to say he’d pick up a take away on his way home.” It would be 9pm as the couple sat down to feast on Chinese or Indian dishes, causing the scales to shoot skywards. “I’m 5ft 2in but I weighed 17

stone and could barely squeeze into size 18 clothes. I needed a size 20 if I was honest,” says Leanne. She joined a gym and started aerobics then began cutting out carbs, but she was hungry all the time and after losing a stone her weight loss slowed right down. “I did a class every day and they gave me an eating plan, which included carbs. I took a Bokwa class, which is a combat dance class. I loved it so much I soon became an instructor.” By now Leanne was a size 14/16, but wanted to lose more. Then her friend, Samantha told Leanne about Herbalife. “She had some samples and I said I’d try it,” says Leanne. “It seemed like the perfect way to celebrate my 40th birthday, three months away. “I had a breakfast shake and one for

lunch and then healthy snacks such as nuts, fruit, low fat yoghurt and Ryvita. For dinner I would eat chicken or fish with veg. I ate every two and a half hours to keep my body working and really watched my portion control. I started to lose 4lb a week. I was going to my exercise classes every day, too.” As motivation Leanne bought the tightest, shortest dress she could for her birthday party. “It was size 10 and went straight on,” she says. When Leanne and Stuart holidayed in the Maldives she no longer had to hide by the pool: “I now felt confident enough to wear a bikini on the beach.” “I was 10 stone 8lb and had lost 64 inches from my size 20 frame. I was literally half the woman I had been.” n Information: herbalife.co.uk

‘I turned my pas Mum Sue Wray gave up her London job of 17 years to set up a baking business, with very sweet results

S

UE WRAY was seven when she started baking. She and mum Janet would create apple pies, carrot cakes and millionaire’s shortbread for Sunday tea in front of the telly watching Last of the Summer Wine. “I’ve always been happiest in the kitchen,” says Sue, 37. “Mum taught me everything.” Sue carried this passion into adult life when, a full-time working mum, She made cakes for family and friends’ birthdays and weddings. Her sponges always rose to perfection and she never let a soggy bottom leave her house. “Everyone would always rave about how delicious my cakes were, telling me I should go into business. But I never thought I could make it happen,” she says. Sue had a successful career as area manager for a national charity. But her London job meant a three-hour commute. She also had to travel the UK, taking her away from husband Neil and daughter Emily, now 17. “Then in 2011, my company restructured and my role changed,” she says. “The area I was to cover was even bigger, meaning more travel and time away from home.” With daughter Emily approaching GCSEs, Sue made a brave decision. “I needed to be there for Emily so I resigned,’

she says, leaving a regular salary after 17 years. “The cake dream had been gnawing away at me, so I decided to go for it.” Sue used her savings for mixers, fridges and all the other equipment. She turned her dining room into a workshop where she decorates cakes and runs baking workshops. Even though she was working from home, there was still a huge amount of work involved in getting Susie Sue’s Cakes off the

S WE move into autumn, it’s time to put away summer colours and update your make-up with this season’s more striking shades. Across the AW14 catwalk shows, skin looked fresh with either statement eyes and a nude lip, or plum and red pouts, keeping the rest of the look neutral. “Healthy luminous skin and soft contouring was an essential part of most make-up looks,” says Rimmel London make-up artist Kirstin Piggott, who has worked with Kate

Moss and Victoria Beckham. “Eyes are the focal point with statement colours on lids, alongside sculpted, bleached or defined eyebrows.” Smokey blue eyes were seen on the Dior, Julien MacDonald and Temperley catwalks – try Rimmel Kate Moss Shadow Stick in Electric

Sapphire, £4.49, or for a subtle look use No7 Stay Perfect In The Navy Eye Shadow trio, £9.50. No7 Advisor, Geraldine Freer says: “Smokey eyes don’t have to be black – and this trio of colours is a great way to update your look, while achieving the ultimate smouldering

glance. Use the shimmery shade as a highlighter – perfect for evening glamour. Apply the mink shade as a base over your eyelids, and then blend the navy into the contours, for a more dramatic look.’ A classic smoky eye using both matte and metallic brown shades also looks fabulous. The new Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in Forest, £31, with shades of khaki green, taupe, bronze and gold, is a handbag must.

ArtDeco’s Perfect Colour Lipstick in Black Cherry Queen, is stunning. For a nude lip try Generous Beige (£10.25). A classic red lip never goes out of fashion. Miss Sporty Lip Millionaire, £3.49, in Jackpot, is purse-friendly and gives a lovely glossy finish. Finish off with a manicure. Rimmel London’s Adam Slee says: “Nails were key on the catwalks. Colours ranged from bright to deep metallic but nails complemented the overall fashion.”

sion into profit’ FIREWORKS FESTIVAL ground. Luckily, her previous generosity in baking for friends and family meant she already had a core set of customers which she could build from – and start charging. “I started helping out in the community, holding bake sales and bake-off events for charity,” she says. Sue quickly became the cup cake queen of Colchester. After three years, she has exceeded profit forecasts and the business is still growing. She continues to perfect her skills, taking courses in icing techniques and sugar craft. “I want to keep improving and be even more creative.” As well as baking them, Sue is a firm lover of eating cakes. Luckily, she runs another business – fitness boot camps. After losing five and a half stone, Sue qualified as a personal trainer in her spare time to quench her love of fitness and keep the weight off. With two successful businesses under her (small) belt, it’s no surprise that she was one of the six finalists in Essex Business Woman of the Year in 2013, beating 80 other contenders. Today, life is sweet for Sue, but it took guts to pursue her passion. “There are worries and stresses, but I work on my terms and from home. I also get to meet lovely people and share in their special occasion. I was looking for a better quality of life and I’ve definitely found it.” n Information: susiesuescakes.co.uk

Supporting the Olympic sports legacy REBECCA Adlington explains why she loves to help children get active. How did you get involved with the Legacy Games Day? “I was invited by Everyone Active to join its Basildon Legacy Games Day in May and really loved the idea of what they’re aiming to do which is to get 500,000 under-16s engaged and active. As an athlete I take the legacy of London 2012 very seriously: the motto then was to Inspire A Generation and the Legacy Games Days help me do just that. What are your first memories of wanting a sporting career?
“Being with my sisters on holiday and just wanting to swim and swim. I remember my mum got me to try loads of different things – netball, ballet and cross country – but swimming was the one thing I wanted to do so I pursued it.! How do you encourage children to get active and make it enjoyable? “It can be hard to motivate a child doing something on his or her own so if you can find friends or family to do things together, they’ll have more fun and go more often. Everyone Active is giving all under-eights free swimming at its three sites in Hornchurch, Chafford and Central Park from January 1st. That’s a great way to encourage kids to swim.” Top tips for a career in swimming or another Olympic sport?
Find a good programme or club for the sport you like. Talk to the coaches and check their days and times will fit well with your schedule. Look at the older kids and see how well they’re doing – it’s something your child will be aiming for. What are your plans for next year? “I’m looking forward to expanding my learn-to-swim programme. I have 20 centres and 3,000 kids involved and am aiming for 5,000. And I also plan to settle into married life!”

A sophisticated t the business this

T

HIS week I pay homage to Harvey Specter of US law TV drama, Suits. If you are not familiar with the show then let me tell you that Mr Specter, played by Gabriel S. Macht, simply oozes class. Women adore him, men want to be like him. The devil, of course, is in the detail. For starters, the inch-perfect tailored, designercut Tom Ford suit, with wide cut lapel, is the crème de la crème, while the crisp white starched shirt and perfect single windsor tie knot is as sharp as it gets. The wide lapel suit is available on the high street; Marks & Spencer does an off-the-peg two and three-piece suit as worn here by male supermodel, David Gandy. Shoes are also key and say a lot about the the person wearing them. The shape of the season is the monk, a traditional, polished leather shoe with a side buckle. There are a few rules for sartorial dressing: Keep your look consistent and unfussy: an Oxford cotton shirt and Jacquard tie with single Windsor knot will make you look sharp and will instill confidence. Harvey looks the part because he wears suits that he knows he looks good in and doesn’t over-complicate the look. Men always wore hats in the Forties and Fifties and they have made a major comeback this season, with the trilby on top. Ever since Don Draper of Mad Men showed us all how to work a suit, sharply tailored business dress looks like it is here to stay. FESTIVE IDEAS

Not wanting to lift a finger this Christmas, Nick Dalton finds five of the best places to celebrate on the big day with Turkey and all the trimmings

LE TALBOOTH

There’s a mixture of classic Christmas and contemporary gourmet at this award-winning riverside restaurant in Constable country. The event starts with a champagne reception with canapés at 12.15 and is followed by a traditional turkey dinner embellished with modern touches such as the starter of poached lobster tail, spiced samosa and fennel, apple and vanilla purée. The four-course meal, followed by coffee and mince pies is £130. Should you want to spend more time in the idyllic, tree-lined setting, the family-run Maison Talbooth country house hotel is next door, offering three-night breaks from Christmas Eve, including Christmas lunch and supper, two dinners and afternoon tea on arrival. This chic modern-rustic 16thcentury country gastropub opposite the village cricket green at Great Totham near Maldon has its own fine dining spot, the Willow Room, with large windows looking over gardens to the Essex countryside – particularly idyllic if there happens to be snow on the ground. The modern English cuisine utilising local ingredients means Christmas classics but with ingredients such as cavolo nero, chestnuts and Brussels leaves. There’s Norfolk turkey but a number of alternatives, including local beef, along with a pan-fried sea bass with samphire, caramelised shallots, salsify and vanilla velouté. The stylish bar is the place to relax after lunch, while the meal starts with canapés and the chance of a cocktail. The five-course meal is £79.95, children 7-13 £39.50, under 7s £25.95.

LEO LEO

(March 21 – April 20) With people whizzing around you it is necessary to take a step back. Sometimes you wonder where you fit in to this whirlwind. Are your needs at odds with those around you? Everyone needs periods of adjustment and this is yours. Forget what is happening around you and make a list of your own needs. Where do you want to be in five years’ time? Don’t feel guilty for thinking of putting yourself first for a change.

SAGITTARIUS SAGITTARIUS

(July 23 – August 23) A suggestion made to someone some time ago is now being accepted. There is a chance to change your mind so give yourself time to consider. Something that you have always wanted is to hand. The circumstances may not be ideal but if you wait for perfection you could wait for a long time. Someone may be pressing for a decision on the festive period but given changing work patterns it may be too soon to make promises.

TAURUS TAURUS

VIRGO VIRGO

(April 21 – May 21) Listen to your partners, be they at work or at home. Is someone dropping not-too-subtle hints? Getting wrapped up in everyday matters can sometimes see us losing touch with the real emotional needs of others. Take a step back and evaluate the situation from their points of view. I am sure that it will be appreciated! Anything that is lacking in your physical life can now be addressed.

CAPRICORN CAPRICORN

(August 24 – September 23) You make small decisions all of the time. This week, however, what seems a small decision could have strong, ongoing effects. Be sharp to make it your best shot. A loved one could do with a little more attention. Find out what they would like to see happening in, say, five years’ time. The answer could surprise you! Keep a strong eye on the path ahead. No doubt there will be someone who will be there to distract your attention.

GEMINI GEMINI

LIBRA LIBRA

(May 22 – June 21) Love and luck are bound tightly together as this week begins. Being in the right place and saying the right words can be crucial. Be yourself by all means but be determined to be at your best. If you are feeling that there is nothing waiting around the corner for you, then think again. Nice things do happen to nice people sometimes! A bit of determination and an enthusiastic approach will sweep others along with you.

SCORPIO SCORPIO

(June 22 – July 22) Something that you make yourself is appreciated rather more than an expensive gift would be. Others know that your time is precious and won’t be taking you for granted. Jazzing up your romantic life is a piece of cake (does that give you a clue?) When someone doesn’t come up to expectations, be patient. However, make it clear that you hope that they will do better next time!

(December 22 – January 20) An emotional week such as this is can be good and bad. Boost the good by being with positive and supportive people. Realise that everything changes, even those things which seem out of your control. A brisk pace at work means good progress. Be aware that changes in this area are more for the good. Journeys bring awareness. Getting down to work and social commitments keeps you on a roll this week.

AQUARIUS AQUARIUS

(September 24 – October 23) A bout of good luck this week could make you suspicious. Are these things happening naturally or is there someone behind them? Does it really matter? Let go of those old insecurities and be prepared to enjoy yourself. There is so much to gain and what to lose?! Realise that others actually want you to be happy! Give yourself a treat. It may be something small but make it something that you do not usually do.

CANCER CANCER

(November 23 – December 21) Keep home and love life sparkling by giving small treats and attentions. Some tedious moments at work could be down to awkward technology. Take charge of this rather than letting it take charge of you. Keeping your mood sweet is down to the right attitude because once you leave work, you really should be shutting off from it! Make weekends a positive time by being where you want to be and in the right company.

(January 21 – February 19) A journey of a very personal nature is exciting and worrying in equal measure. You are feeling vital and alive with more love in your heart. A bright smile will win others over far more than a serious pout. An adventurous moment could see you planning a holiday to somewhere exotic. Be true to your own needs instead of just catering for others. Taking time to consider your own wants and needs should not make you feel guilty.

PISCES PISCES

(October 24 – November 22) Normally you look and aim for what you want in life. This week, however, is more dominated is looking at what you don’t want. Taking a more practical approach to your love life means that anything that is not right has to be dealt with. In telling someone how you feel you learn that their intentions are perfectly innocent. Sort the good from the bad and the negative from the positive.

(February 20 – March 20) There is plenty of love and affection around. The question is how much is coming your way? Online experiences give pause for thought. A light-hearted approach, though, is sometimes needed. Although you cannot take things at face value, a little research can reveal amazing things. Nothing is black and white. When in doubt take a step backwards and make sure that you are on your chosen path.

FORECOURT NEWS

n VOLVO has unveiled an allnew XC90. The core of the new range will be the Momentum model. Above this sits two more. The R-Design has a sports-inspired look and the Inscription model is elegant with an even more luxurious experience. n PEUGEOT has added two new models to its popular 308. The 308 GT Line capitalises on the sporting character of the GT. Meanwhile, the 308 Sportium is a new special edition model for retail customers and features Peugeot’s ultraefficient three-cylinder petrol engine. n NISSAN has updated its multi-award winning Qashqai range with the launch of a brand new n-tec trim model. The new grade replaces Acenta Premium in the Qashqai line-up and is positioned between the existing Acenta and Tekna.

Fuel prices tumble THERE is some great news for motorists as fuel prices continue to fall to their lowest prices in four years. With a glut of oil being extracted around the world, Brent crude prices fell more than a dollar to a 27-month low of $84.54 at one point, down more than 20 per cent from the June high of $115.06. Motorists are feeling the benefit of the recent drops on the forecourt as the average cost of a litre of petrol dived to 124.9p on Monday, according to website PetrolPrices.com. This is the lowest since January 2011 when prices were

inflated by the Chancellor’s VAT hike to 20 per cent. Motorists have been helped by pledges from supermarkets to cut up to 5p a litre off petrol. But an AA spokesman said further big reductions were dependent on international markets and producers were unlikely to tolerate lower prices forever: “It may be a false dawn to say low prices will be around for a while but we should enjoy it while it is there.” Cheapest prices around are: Shell, Brook Street, Brentwood, at 124.9p for unleaded and Esso, Warley Service Station, Southend Arterial, 128.9p for diesel.

ANT to buy a Volkswagen Golf but find it not quite large enough for your needs? Well a solution is here: the new Golf SV. With an extended wheelbase, and 83mm longer than the Golf hatchback, it is an important 126mm taller. All those extra millimetres have been used to great effect to boost interior space by quite a degree. Passengers and driver enjoy a nice raised position with plenty of glass space to add to the interior ambience. Trim levels start with the S, SE and GT, with an ecofriendly Bluemotion version to be added later. The 1.6-litre 110 PS (a metric measure of engine power) diesel engine offers

By

CHRIS MANNING a CO2 figure of 95g/km and combined fuel economy figure of 78.5 mpg. The range of engines is comprehensive with a 1.2-litre petrol engine which has power outputs of 85 and 110 PS. There is also a larger 1.4-litre unit of 125 and 150 PS, which are turbocharged and come with Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems. For diesel power, a 1.6-litre with 90 and 110 PS are joined by a 2.0-litre diesel with 150 PS and are available with either manual or DSG automatic gearboxes, although the 1.2-litre petrol 85 PS engine is not. Volkswagen expect that the

best seller will be the midrange SE version fitted with a 1.6-litre 110 PS diesel engine, which is priced at £22,585. With economy in mind, it returns a healthy 72.4 mpg figure and CO2 level of 101g/ km, and was the first version I tested on a recent driving day. First impressions is that the amount of glass space from the square-shaped windows makes for great all-round visibility, particularly for reversing, as the glazed area lets you know where the rear corners are. With enough space for five adults passengers, the rear seat not only has a recline feature but also slides backwards and forwards by 18cm (7in) to increase legroom or boot space. This measures 500 litres and 590 litres with the seats slid forward. The

dashboard has typical Teutonic functionality, although it’s a little bit plain with different shades of grey and muted silver. It could do with a splash of chrome to liven it up, but is extremely well built and logically laid out to perform its function without fuss. Out on the road the Golf SV handles extremely well for a tall car. The 1.6-litre diesel engine performed well, the only minus point was that it droned slightly at 30 mph in fourth gear and selecting third

was a sensible option to let the engine rev slightly higher. The second drive of the day was in a petrol-engined version with a 1.4-litre 125 PS engine. An increase in power made this engine more lively and smooth, but it suffers against the diesel with a slightly higher CO2 output of 121g/km and lower combined mpg figure of 54.3. Standard kit on the new Volkswagen Golf SV includes a 5.8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth phone and media

connection plus digital radio. For passengers’ comfort their is air conditioning, and in the front there’s a centre arm rest which is height adjustable. Both driver and passenger seats are height adjustable and the steering wheel can be adjusted for reach and height. A raft of safety features include several airbags in each car, tyre pressure sensors, ABS, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and XDS electronic differential lock for improved traction in adverse conditions. Side Scan, a blind spot monitor, is an optional first for the Golf SV. This monitors the area behind and to the side of the vehicle ensuring a safe and easier exit when reversing out of a parking space. n The Golf SV 2.0-litre diesel recently picked up a class win in the Caravan Club Towcar of the Year 2015 in the £25,000 to £30,000 price category.

Ladies’ spot-kick showdown

WEST HAM United Ladies won through to the London Capital Cup second round with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The Hammers led four times during normal and extra time, only for their opponents to strike back on each occasion to make the final score 4-4, forcing the game to a spot-kick showdown. Goalkeeper Nikita Runnacles took centre-stage at Ware FC, saving Tottenham’s third penalty from Alex Keown and paving the way for Danica Revell to clinch victory from 12 yards.

COOL CATS WIN AGAIN Captain Albert Margai in action

n

TOTTENHAM Hotspur take on Europa League group winners Asteras Tripolis at White Hart Lane tonight. Spurs will be hoping for a much-needed win tonight if they want to advance further. Spurs return to league action on Sunday with the visit of Newcastle United to The Lane.

n

LEYTON Orient have signed striker Gianvito Plasmati until the end of the season, subject to clearance. Italian Plasmati, 31, made his Serie A debut with Catania in 2007 but has been without a club since leaving Siena this year. The Orient hope he will fire them up from their current lowly position.

RUGBY UNION

E

SSEX Leopards continued their unbeaten start with their third win out of three matches in the National trophy. They beat Westminster Warriors 82-56 at Harlow on Saturday. The Cats led from the buzzer with Lawrence Brown opening the home team’s account. Captain Albert Margai and Dave Ajumobi scored well during the second and third periods to keep the Leopards ahead. Margai opened the third period scoring and Leopards kept their lead in double figures throughout the quarter before Margai capped a 10-2 run at the foul line to send his side into the final break 58-38 ahead. The lead peaked at 26 on a Brown hook shot with 3:11 on the clock in Leopards’ third win in the National Trophy. Margai and Byron Richards led the way for the Cats with 14 points apiece, with Margai adding seven assists. Will Ashby and Dave Adjumobi finished with 11 points each, with the latter

Essex Leopards 82 Westminster W 56 National Trophy

pulling down seven rebounds. Swedish centre Lukas Winegarner marked his successful home debut with a 12 rebound, 10 point double as all nine Leopards got on the score sheet and logged at least 17 minutes playing time. Leopards will look to seal a place in the National Cup quarter-final when they host London Lituanica at the Brentwood Centre on Sunday, tip-off 4pm. n LAST week’s defeat away to Kent has been declared null and void due to a substandard court. This means The Cats need two points from their remaining three games to seal top spot in their group and advance to the quarter finals.

YOUTH RUGBY

Dismal afternoon ACORN BOYS TAKE ON OLDER TEAM B O RENTWOOD’S mounting injury list took its toll on Saturday, when they were without eight first team regulars. Director of Rugby Steve Killington played in the front row for the first time in his long career with Rob Mead and Chris Stewart returning to the side after long absences. Ruislip dominated the opening exchanges ensuring the game was all but over in the opening 25 minutes. Ball handling errors and a lack of pace prevented Brentwood from mounting any serious threats. Further injuries robbed Brentwood of fly half Henry Bird and second row Rob Hobbs just before half time. Brentwood did rally in the second

half with the forwards gaining over the home pack early on. Tom Knight burst through to score Brentwood’s’ first try with Charly Inwood converting the extra points to cut the deficit. However, Ruislip showed their superiority with clever play in midfield creating an opening for them to score another try which was converted to extend their lead to 34-7. Chris Stewart scored Brentwood’s 2nd try, converted by Harry Watson, but Ruislip added another try just before the final whistle to round off Brentwood’s dismal afternoon.

47

LD BRENTWOOD Acorns faced tough competion against Stanford Le hope in the preliminary round of the Essex Cup, with Stanford running in three tries to take the first half score to 19-0. Acorns battled hard against a team a league above them and won the rucking battle with impressive work by Evan Barnes, Toby Deacon and Frank Parish. Their only try came from a well-executed switch move by the two centres which allowed Tim Mason to dart through and score a try, converted by the man of the match Luke Savage. However, Stanford Le hope scored a further four tries, beinging the final score to 40-7.

FA Trophy preliminary replay Brentwood Town 1 Redhill 1 FA Trophy Preliminary Round

BRENTWOOD Town and Redhill will meet again on Tuesday after their FA Trophy preliminary round tie at The Arena ended in a 1-1 draw. Yeshaya Lomotey gave the hosts an early lead but Brentwood were reduced to 10 men on 66 minutes when jointmanager Danny Dafter was shown a red card. Redhill were unable to exploit the numerical advantage, until Chris O’Flaherty equalised for the Lobsters midway through the second half in the 65th minute. O’Flaherty’s corner-kick curled directly into the Brentwood net. “We’ve got so many injuries at the moment, it would have been nice to have the week off and then go into the Soham game next Saturday with a full-strength squad,” said Brentwood’s joint-boss Adam Flanagan. The winner of Tuesday’s replay at Kiln Brow will face Biggleswade Town at home in the first qualifying round. Brentwood: Bowles, Mbulu, Baucutt, Stokes (C), O’Rawe, Ngandu, Dobbs (Bankole 83’), Dafter, Kabodi (Stanley 73’), Lomotey, Bantick. Unused subs: Joslin, Pellin.

n SHENFIELD High school U16’s boys football team caused a major upset in the National Cup after beating former champions Whitgift School 3-2 in the fifth round. The Croydon school, coached by ex-Crystal Palace boss Steve Kember, provides players for Chelsea and Palaces’ Academies and beat Shenfield last year. Shenfield came from 2-0 down to record a great victory after two goals from Rawlins and the winner from Cosgrave ensured Shenfields passage into the next round.

ust over the border in rural Suffolk, a rare opportunity has arisen to buy an established, awardwinning vineyard and mixed commercial farm offering bags of business potential. Nestled in just under 130 acres – including an orchard, grassland, woodland and numerous modern farm buildings – the site is not only used to produce fine English wines, but also to support a herd of 75 award-winning pedigree Red Poll beef cattle, and to produce heritage apple juices. It has a farm shop stocked with locally-sourced produce from across East Anglia; a new temperature-controlled bottle store; and an office, which provides a well-designed space for tasting and sales. All these commercial elements combine to make Brook Farm a very attractive njoy the fruits proposition for the right buyer. Even at Lavenham the existing cattle – currently holder of rd for £1.21m the National Herd Championship – are available to the purchaser by separate negotiation, as are existing stocks of wine and apple juice. Established in 2003 and now spanning some ten acres, the farm’s vineyard nurtures more than 10,000 vines and supplies two grape varieties – Bacchus and Pinot Noir. These are used by leading British wine maker Piers Greenwood to produce Lavenham Brook Vineyard’s fine English wines. The enterprising farm has been builtup into what it is today over the past 15 years by its hard-working current owner, entrepreneurial Nick Thomson, 71. “I will be very sorry to say farewell to Edmunds. such a magical place... but unfortunately I am not getting any younger and I feel it is time to step aside and let someone else have a go,” says Nick. “Suffolk has proven to be a very good place to grow

This established, FOUR BEDROOM family home is positioned in the highly sought after St Martin’s School catchment area, within one mile of Shenfield High Street and station. The property offers substantial family accommodation and benefits from a carriage driveway and garage.

The Home Partnership is delighted to have sold (STC) this FOUR DOUBLE BEDROOM end terrace house, prior to formal marketing – we have again exceeded our client’s expectations on both timescale and price! MORE PROPERTIES URGENTLY REQUIRED.

So over a period of time the actual face to face contact with your local estate agent has diminished. When we talk to our clients, some decline to be registered with us because they believe that as they are registered on a property portal, there is no need.

Then along came Rightmove, Zoopla, Find a Property and countless other property portals. You are now able to access all estate agents and properties at the touch of a button. You can search anywhere in the world without having to visit the location itself, view the inside of a house without actually going to see it and more often than not view the entire floor plan of your perspective home.

It is common to think that the only skill in an estate agent is to arrange a viewing and wear a cheap suit! Not everyone wants their home ‘picked on’ by non-complimentary viewers! Here at The Home Partnership we have many retained clients that we match to properties on ‘one off viewings’, without a house even going on the open market. With careful negotiations and skill we are able to liaise between parties to enable both clients achieving a mutually beneficial outcome, specified not only by price but also timescales and personal circumstances. Then, not forgetting the part that we play once the price has been agreed. Progressing a sale to completion takes on average 3 months - we only take a fee from you if you ACTUALLY move. Here, we pride ourselves on the time that we take in ensuring all links in the chain are fully up to date – this includes other estate agents, solicitors and of course YOU! We want you to come in and see us (not wearing cheap suits!) and have a chat about the ups and downs of the sometimes stressful process that is house moving. We’ve made our home a nice place to come and visit and hope you’ll pop in and see us, tell us what you need and we will do our best to help you with or without the internet ....!

Why should more buyers consider buying a new-build home as opposed to older property? There are many considerations that a buyer should bear in mind when looking at a new-build home compared with an older property. A buyer wants to be assured that their new move is going to be as convenient as possible, so should be checking that their new home will be low maintenance, with a good specification and a high quality of build. It is always worth ensuring that the home has a 10-year property guarantee, to act as a ‘peace of mind’ purchase for all types of buyers – this rule applies to the whole range of buyers, from investors, to first-time buyers, to other owner occupiers.

Outline plans submitted for 500 new homes in rayleigh COUNtrYSIDe PrOPertIeS HAS put in an outline planning application for a development ofn 500 homes and its own primary school, nursery, shops and clinic, to be built just outside Rayleigh. The proposed site is on Green Belt land located to the north of London Road and south of Rawreth Lane. The development would provide a significant contribution to the recently approved – and controversial – Rochford Council Local Plan document, which earmarks the likely location of some 4,000 homes that need to be built between now and 2021. Cllr Ian Ward, said: “We are obliged to accommodate these dwellings and we will be ensuring the infrastructure is there to cope with the perceived problems. At the moment, it is just outline permission and it may be that the plan has to change a bit.” It is likely that some changes to the proposals will be undertaken before a full planning application is submitted because the area covered was originally designated to take 550 homes. Andrew Carrington, Countryside’s strategic land director, said: “Our aim is to create a sustainable scheme that fully integrates with the existing community and has a strong sense of local identity.
