The Dartford Bridge’s new ‘free flow’ traffic system hopes to ease congestion

Issue 006

Thursday, 13th November 2014

T

HE Dartford Crossing becomes toll-booth free as of Sunday, November 30 at 6am, it was confirmed last week. The toll barriers will be removed and the long awaited ‘free-flow’ traffic system comes into force with the aim of reducing congestion at this Thames crossing bottleneck. Instead of stopping to pay the fee – which will rise to

£2.50 – motorists will now have their registration number snapped by cameras at various points across the bridge and at the tunnel entrances. They will then have 24-hours to pay the Dart Charge toll, either via the internet, over the phone, by post or at various Payzone terminals in stores. If you fail to pay, the penalty charge is £70 and

must be paid within 28 days or reduced to £35 if you pay within 14 days. The most beneficial way for Essex residents to pay, is by setting up a Dart Charge pre-pay account with savings around a third on every crossing. Existing Dart-Tag customers will soon be contacted with information on how to change over to the new system.

The AA fears many unwitting drivers will be caught out by the new system, especially if they are only occasional users of the bridge. A recent AA poll revealed that 85 per cent of members were unaware that they will have to pay by phone or online. Even locally, 16 per cent of drivers directly affected by the new charging system are unaware of it.

AA head of roads policy Paul Watters said: ‘Our worry is that this will all end in chaos. They may welcome less congestion and queuing, but they won’t be happy if a penalty charge notice drops through their letterbox because they forgot to pay the one time they used it.’’ He said: ‘‘We’ve had lots of calls from members who are n Continued on page 2

Jump on board festive fundraiser Celebrities get woolly for Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day charity campaign

S

TRICTLY Come Dancing star Mark Wright has swapped his glitzy dance attire to don a winter woolly - all in the name of a good cause. He joins a host of celebrities including Fearne Cotton, Myleene Klass, Good Morning Britain presenters Kate Garraway and Ben Shepherd and his TOWIE-star sister Jess, to promote Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day to raise money to help children living in poverty. Now in its third year, the campaign has so far raised more than £1.6 million to date for the children’s charity and this year the government are showing their support too by doubling your money,

matching every pound you give. Plenty of stores are selling jumpers for the campaign such as George at Asda who are the official retail partner aiming to raise over £750,000. Pets at Home are selling Christsmas jumpers for dogs too, all with donations to Save the Children. Friday December 12 is the day when you, your friends and family and pets can join the woolly revolution to help ‘make the world better with a sweater’. By supporting Save the Children and taking part in Christmas Jumper Day and donating just £1-£2 you’ll help save lives in some of the toughest parts of the world. Inspirational turn out for poignant Remembrance Day service and parade

RENTWOOD was brought to a standstill on Sunday when hundreds turned out for the Remembrance Day service and parade. Veterans and serving members of the armed forces wearing their uniforms and poppies with pride remembered their fallen comrades. The pavements were packed with crowds of people watching the procession. The parade which set off from the Town Hall in Ingrave Road to the War Memorial, was led by The Royal Britigh Legion Youth Band of Brentwood. Wreaths were placed, before a service of prayer by Reverand Colin Hewitt from St Thomas of Canterbury Church. A WWI memorial bench funded

by the Brentwood Branch of the Royal British Legion and local companies also took pride of place by the War Memorial. The Legion also received an anonymous donation of £1,000 to their poppy appeal. Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Vicky Davies said: “We must never forget those who have fought and given their lives for our country.”

AWARENESS IS THE KEY

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY

Cancer charity stresses that lung cancer can be treated and cured if caught early enough

M

ACMILLAN Cancer Support is urging the public to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the UK’s most lethal cancer, lung cancer. November is lung cancer awareness month, a great way of educating people that if caught early enough, lung cancer is treatable. More than 35,000 people in the UK die from lung cancer every year, but the charity says it does not have to be life ending. Macmillan reveals that 77 per cent of patients are unaware of the signs and symptoms which means many

are being diagnosed too late for curative treatment. It is vital therefore that people are better educated, getting to their GP’s when symptoms occur which could mean early diagnosis and better prognosis. Brentwood woman Susan Bannocks was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2004. “My diagnosis came as a complete surprise as I did not have any symptoms I would associate with lung cancer. “I thought I had a cold, but my doctor sent me for further tests as he suspected I had pneumonia. “It was during an X-ray that the tumour was

detected.” Susan was treated with surgery and chemotherapy and has now been cancerclear for about five years. Earlier this year she ran the Edinburgh Marathon to mark 10 years since her diagnosis and fund-raised for Macmillan to thank them for the support she received during her treatment. There is a common misconception that lung cancer only affects smokers but one in 10 cases are not linked to smoking at all. If you have any worries about lung cancer call Macmillan 0808 808 0000 or visit macmillan.org.uk

Hospice nurse strikes it lucky

HOSPICE staff nurse Connie Sillet had a lucky week when she won on two lotteries. Her first win was on the Euro millions which only netted her £7.90. But her winning streak continued when she scooped the first prize of £1,000 in the lottery run by Saint Francis Hospice where she works as staff nurse on the inpatient unit. Connie, from Hornchurch, has worked at the Haveringatte-Bower hospice since 2011 said: “I joined the hospice’s lottery when it started three years ago. I never usually win anything, but last week was obviously a lucky one for me. I am going to spend the winnings on a holiday to Rome with my husband Ross and two children.” Saint Francis Hospice is a registered charity providing care free of charge to 4,000 people across the county with life-limiting illnesses.

A SPECIAL celebration was held in County Hall, Chelmsford to mark Sons and Daughters Week and to thank the birth children of foster carers for their valuable contribution to fostering. Councillor Joe Pike presented children from all over Essex with certificates of achievement and goody bags. Fostering is not just a decision for adults but the whole family. When a family decides to foster, children will have to share their toys, their home and their parents’ time and attention. However, the majority of children thrive as part of a fostering family and actively contribute by offering support and a positive role model to fostered children. Councillor Dick Madden, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “Sons and daughters are all too often the unsung heroes of fostering. This week is all about recognising everyone in the household that helps to make fostering a sucess.” If you want to find out more about any aspect of fostering, visit essex.gov.uk/fostering or call 0800 801 530.

NEWS FOOD STANDARDS GRAND OPENING

The Dairyman comes to town

Food hygiene tops the menu

Y

THINKING of eating out this Christmas but want to make sure that the restaurant you have chosen comes up to scratch regarding its food hygiene? Brentwood Council and the Food Standards Agency are promoting a ‘Look Before You Book’ method where you can check the rating of your chosen place. These are determined by local authority food safety officers and run from 0-5, with five being the highest level of food hygiene. Visit: ratings.food.gov.uk and type in where you are planning to eat out. Their rating should appear. If you are out and about look for the green and black sticker. If you can’t see one, just ask.

OU CAN’T miss the milk churns on the sign hanging above the door as you approach Brentwood High Street’s new JD Wetherspoon’s pub. Fifty years ago the 16-18 High Street spot was home to Daveys Dairy, which resided here since the turn of the century - thus the name The Dairyman was born. Inside this huge space the nod to its past as a dairy is evident, from the huge churns and other traditional milking equipment the moment you enter, to the old photos and artwork displayed throughout. There’s poignant shots of the High Street dating back to 1895 which features alongside artwork by local artist Douglas Bull. It is the elegant art-deco interior

that really stands out; glass-lit panelled booths surrounded by dark wood, vintage leather-style sofas, Victorian floor tiles and huge brass light fittings which hang from the corniced ceiling. The bar though is without doubt its most redeeming feature with its gleaming mirror backdrop and antique wine glass racks. There’s acres of space for customers to sit and sup a range of real ales or chat amongst friends with a bottle of prosecco. A daily menu of hearty food will also be served throughout the day until 11pm. The Dairyman is officially being opened by Mayor of Brentwood Councillor Vicky Davies on Tuesday, November 18 at 1.30pm.

Phoenix FM presenter Xanthe ‘The Bear’ Bearman claws back the most popular tunes each Thursday

X

ANTHE ‘The Bear’ Bearman has danced through the world of showbiz and is now one of Phoenix FM’s leading presenters. She started out in modelling and then took to the stage in musicals. “I was in Eurobeat, the Eurovision musical, in the West End, I also sang in a group until a couple of years ago, the Mazers, a party band.” Xanthe joined Phoenix FM in the early days, in 2006. “My in-laws lived near where they were broadcasting from and I thought I’d pop down,” she says. Soon she was co-presenting a weekend show, and when the station went full time in 2007 she hosted the daily Bear at Lunchtime. She was such a hit that The Bear was quickly led away by BBC Essex and presented shows there for more than a year. In 2010 she started running her own business, Tiny Mites Music, teaching singing and dancing to pre-school children and babies. Xanthe – who is married and has a daughter of 16, Alyx, and twins Scarlett and Lochlan, 12 – loved working with youngsters but, in true showbiz fashion, couldn’t deal with the admin. She had the urge to get back into radio and was finally persuaded to return to her old home of Phoenix FM earlier this year. She now hosts

Mark, who directed and produced the full-length version of the show is now the administrator of the Brentwood Theatre, and is now set to relive the experience when Brentwood Operative Singing Society Youth (BOSSY) bring Joseph to the theatre. As another link to that 30th anniversary show

Jonathan O’Neill rehearsing for the BOSSY production of Joseph is that the London school of Design created a special Coat of Many Colours, complete with gold lining for Aled Jones who starred in the leading role as Joseph to wear in the 1998 show. Now the Amazing Coat is to be worn again, this time by Jonathan O’Neill, and Mark Reed recently presented him with the coat during a rehearsal for the show. Mark said: “Thank you for keeping my

dreams going. It was so exciting to see the coat being worn again.” Gaynor Wilson, principle of BOSSY said that the cast, all aged between 11 to 18-years were all working hard at perfecting their roles. n Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat will be playing at the Brentwood Theatre from November 26 to 29 and tickets are now on sale via bossy.ticketsource.co.uk

HISTORY

Southend’s wartime courage and fortitude

Local author pens fascinating new history book

B

RENTWOOD author Frances Clamp has published a new book telling the story of Southend on Sea in the Great War. This is her tenth local history book concerning Essex. Frances was raised in Southend and went on to teach history there at Westborough High School. Although Frances has lived in Brentwood for a number of years she still thinks of Southend as her home town. She became fascinated by stories of the effect of the Great War on ordinary people and how they coped. In this unique book she reveals the wartime courage and fortitude that was displayed by the citizens of Southend-onSea such as the women, who lived with the constant fear of the loss of loved ones and had to take on roles that had traditionally been done by men. She recounts the impact of war including the bombs that were dropped on the town and how badly it was hit, with the worst raid being in August 1917, when more than thirty people were killed.

NEWS ACTIVE ESSEX

Getting girls sport active JUST like the girls from Dagenham a national ‘This Girl Can’ campaign run by Sport England, aims to close the gender gap to get more women participating in sporting activities. Active Essex is behind the Sport England move, which officially launches in January and aims to forge new positive social attitudes around women and girls playing sport and being physically active. More than 224,600 women in Essex participate in sport, compared to 227,900 men – a difference of almost 10 per cent. As well as supporting Sport England’s campaign, Active Essex’s She Has Energy (SHE) programme aims to help existing community groups to provide sport or physical activity. Chairman of Active Essex, Gary Sullivan said: “We fully support the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign. One of the key reasons we launched Get Active Essex was to encourage people in Essex, who are inactive, to get active and get healthy. We are committed to helping more women and girls access sport and activities, particularly through schemes such as SHE.’’ Over 1,500 women will benefit from the project, which aims to support 70 community groups within deprived areas of Essex, empowering local women to help create and run the clubs themselves. CHRISTMAS IS COMING

Talking

turkey with Paul Kelly When it comes to turkeys, it’s the Kelly Bronze that wins the awards. Debbi Marco chats to the man responsible for this award-winning bird

Paul Kelly and one of his woodlandraised turkeys

P

AUL KELLY is a man who knows his turkeys. His family has owned their turkey farm since 1971 and they created their own unique breed, the KellyBronze, in 1984. During 2009, the Kelly's celebrated 25 years of producing their award-winning KellyBronze turkeys. Paul also boasts a few personal accolades too, appearing in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s fastest turkey plucker and carver (he can plate up 15 portions in under four minutes). But it’s the quality of Paul’s birds that really deserve the accolades and they are lauded by celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver, Delia Smith, Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson, who all insist on receiving their annual KellyBronze. “Christmas is obviously the busiest

'KellyBronze turkeys are the best of the best, the most joyful treat. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a KellyBronze turkey' Jamie Oliver time for us,” says Paul. “But the planning starts 24 months in advance. We have to make sure we have enough birds to produce all the eggs.” Once the eggs are hatched in late May, the chicks are incubated and are kept in a heated shed for five weeks. Then they are released into Danbury Woods just outside Chelmsford, free to roam and feast on grass and nettles until the last week in November. “All our birds are plucked by hand,”

'I think for Christmas lunch it has to be turkey, furthermore, this turkey has to be a Bronze. The KellyBronze is the best bird you can buy, a good turkey reared well, is what makes all the difference.' Nigella Lawson explains Paul, whose world record sees him pluck three turkeys in 11 minutes and 21 seconds. They are then hung in a fridge for 14 days as the hanging breaks down the collagen in the muscle making the meat more tender. Paul is very specific that only a turkey that has been bred, fed, cared for and prepared the 'Kelly way' can be called a KellyBronze. “The secret of the KellyBronze is it takes six months until maturity whereas other fresh turkeys take around 12 weeks. This means the Bronze has a finer muscle texture and the fat is marbled through.” While it’s unique meat makes it tastier, it also means you need to cook your bird for less time as fat heats up quicker than muscle. “Keep it simple, don’t stuff it, and always roast your bird breast down,” advises Paul. “This way as fat deposits in the back of the

bird melt they will trickle down and baste the breast.” Every Christmas over 30,000 KellyBronze turkeys are sold at £12 per kilo, but it’s still only a fraction of the £10million Christmas turkey market. He also has a small number on sale for Thanksgiving.

Kelly’s have stuck to tradition and with care and dedication produced what I call the real thing: turkey with all the character and flavour it was meant to have. Delia Smith

KellyBronze PLACE BREAST DOWN IN A LARGE ROASTING TIN

Each bird comes with a cooking thermometer and instructions but takes on average an hour less than other turkeys. They are also hand wrapped and boxed ready for delivery. Luckily the farm delivers nationwide also has dozens of suppliers county and country wide. Paul is proud of his awardwinning KellyBronze which has won the British Turkey Federation's Best Christmas Turkey Award for the past three years but also the achievement that he's producing birds that really help make Christmas special for his customers. "It’s the easiest meal you can cook too," he says with a smile, "simply put it in the oven and two hours later it is cooked to perfection." So ensure you’re carving the best on the big day.

Name the Bird Paul Kelly is looking to find a name for a new, very special little turkey that they have bred for the smaller gathering at Christmas. The name should be unique, cool and of course in keeping with the brand and ethos of KellyBronze. The name Paul is using at the moment, albeit a little too obvious is ‘The KellyBronze mini’. The winning name will be chosen by Paul Kelly himself and a 5kg turkey will be awarded to the best three entries so start thinking and good luck as he is excited to hear your thoughts. l Cooking it upside down will keep the

breast meat moist because the fat on the back of the bird trickles through to the breast. l Add salt & pepper to the back of the turkey and half a litre of water in the roasting tin. l Don't stuff the bird - cook your stuffing separately.

PUT IN THE OVEN WITH NO FOIL

Adding foil at any stage will steam the skin and poach the meat.

TURN THE TURKEY OVER

l Halfway through our recommended

cooking time - by holding the drumsticks with oven gloves - season the breast with salt & pepper.

CHECK ITS TEMPERATURE

l 30 minutes before the end of

the cooking time - by putting the complimentary thermometer half way through the thickest part of the breast. l When the needle hits 65C it's done. l If it's not up to temperature, place back in the oven & check every 10 mins.

TAKE IT OUT OF THE OVEN

l Leave for at least 30 minutes

(preferably 60 minutes) before you carve it - it won't go cold. Don't be tempted to cover it.

MAKE THE BEST TASTING GRAVY l Just skim any excess fat from the top of

the stock and scrape in all the delicious sticky bits off the bottom of the roasting tin. Re-heat the stock in a pan. It's done! Once cooked, remove the skin and place on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt and return to the oven for another 20 mins for perfect Kelly crackling.

Love & Marriage

You’ll be spoilt for choice

WEDDINGS

If you have recently got engaged and have no idea how to begin to plan your wedding, a wedding fayre is a great starting point, says Danielle Fowles owner of Essex-based Belle Journee Wedding Consultancy.

DECISIONS DECISIONS

Find a...

Wedding

Why choose a wedding fayre? It is always good to have options. Wedding fayres are of great value to couples of all ages, gender and style. They not only give a vast range of options but offer variety, creativity and inspiration. Most couples will start out in the planning stages with limited knowledge and no idea where to start. That’s where a knowledgeable wedding planner will become a great asset. I always advise my clients who don’t know what they fully want on their day, to go along to as many wedding fayres as they can cope with, until they get that vision which can start the ball rolling, it can the simplest thing such as a colour and theme or wedding transport.

Fayres

WORTHWHILE OR WASTE OF TIME?

Do people get much out of them? If couples attend a well executed wedding fayre, by this I mean properly advertised locally or nationally, they are beneficial. Usually the event organisers will offer goody bags to the first 100 brides, this is a great incentive, as there will be some useful literature, freebies and coupons. Couples will get to meet and talk to a host of suppliers/exhibitors, raise numerous questions and most importantly get ideas of price.

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY

Can you recommend any must-visit Essex based fayres? Heart FM hold a wedding fayre in Brentwood every year (Brentwood Centre, February 21 and 22, 2015) which always has a lovely range of exhibitors. The QQW wedding spectaculars are also worthwhile and starting to pop up all over the country – Brighton is my favourite, there is also one in Kent next April, details can be found on Facebook under QQW Kent wedding fayre. This is an alternative wedding show and well worth a visit if you’re looking for something incredibly creative and with a twist. The exhibitors are just wonderful, very insightful and helpful.

START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON

Other than fayres how would you advise couples how to start planning their wedding? First things first, start a budget planner and design a mood board to how you envisage seeing your day pan out. Write down a list of what you want from guest numbers to type of cake. The biggest expenses are usually the venue and dress but it depends on you as a couple and your budget.

LISTEN TO THE EXPERTS

Do you have any essential advice? Weddings can be one of the most stressful times in any couples life so it’s important to keep some classic do’s and don’ts in mind as you plan for your memorable day.

The Do’s o your research on the suppliers or venue you ❤D

want to use, they might look great but if they don’t have good reviews or recommendations steer clear. o go with your instinct if it feels right don’t ❤D second guess. o hire a wedding planner. A professional ❤D wedding planner will not cost the earth and will save you money in the long run.

Newmarket Wedding Show, Millennium Grandstand, Rowley Mile Racecourse, CB8 0TF. 11am-4pm Admission Free

Wedding fayres Even if you just need help with a specific area a wedding planner’s expertise will make things run smoothly. ❤ Do have a basic idea of what you would like from your day. ❤ Do think about making your own special touches for the day, perhaps the stationary or favors. This is so much fun and so very personal; find your creative spark and you can bring something unique and memorable. ❤ Do shop around for the best deal there’s plenty around you just need to do a bit of research.

`The Don’ts ❤ Don’t be afraid to ask questions, professionals

will be more than happy to give you their time and advice - it’s their job. ❤ Don’t be pushed into making decisions by suppliers, wedding planners are useful here to negotiate and take away any undue stress in this area. ❤ Don’t go with the first thing you see, as there will be something else that you prefer more. As hard as it is, don’t be impulsive. ❤ Don’t pay in full and upfront; businesses will thankfully not expect full payment until a few weeks before the big day.

Here comes the...

EDDINGS, whatever the time of the year are a magical affair but a winter wedding can be 18 particularly enchanting. My own December wedding was a ‘white out’ but once we got over the shock of deep snow we had wedding pictures that outshone any of our expectations. The dark evenings, warm candlelight and country setting really gave us a cosy and romantic feel that seemed decadently intimate and definitely couldn’t have been imitated at any other time of the year. If a winter wedding is what you’re planning, maximise the winter light and embrace a deep, colour scheme… reds, royal blues, purples and burgundies can add a really elegant and sumptuous feel. These can be worked into the wedding party’s colour scheme or picked out in flowers and table decorations. High street retailer Interflora are providing some celebrity inspired floral creation in collaboration with Vera Wang with fabulous winter colour schemes. The White House a bridal boutique in Brentwood Essex, specialising in designer wedding dresses from stellar brands including Pronovias, Donna Salado and Jenny Packham. Roz Parker, owner commented: “Winter weddings appeal to those people who want

to get married close to honeymoon and enjoy some winter sun, destination weddings are also popular in places like the Maldives and Bali as they are a once in a lifetime and they combine the honeymoon. The gap is also narrowing between Summer and Winter weddings, with a approximately 70-30 per cent ratio people are now considering a winter wedding over a summer one.” Another custom boutique, Christine of Shenfield specialise in Mother-of-the-Bride designer outfits. Covering sizes from 10-22 they offer that ‘something special’ that you can’t get on the high street when you want to co-ordinate with the bride or groom. Alex Taylor co-owner of Christine of Shenfield says: “ The mother of the Bride or Groom need to look special and feel there is a significant difference between them and the other guests. They come to us all year around but what I like about winter weddings is how magical they are, there’s just something about getting married in the winter especially at Christmas. Its also easier as venues are open all year around nowadays and you can do the whole thing in one venue, also for those on a budget, getting married in the off-peak season can save you half the cost.” Other local wedding retailers in the local area include New Beginnings in Brentwood (bridalwearessex.co.uk) and (houseofcouture. co.uk) in Hornchurch.

From igloo-inspired camps to stylish ski hotels

WINTER BREAKS

Boutique ski holidays put style and post piste pampering at the top of the slopes and they’re not as expensive as you might think. Aaron Millar selects some of the best options for the season ahead.

Slope off in style DV Boutique Hotel & Spa ITALY

Hotel des Dromonts FRANCE

Don’t be fooled by Hotel des Dromont’s (hoteldesdromonts.com) eccentric pinecone-like structure, inside is one of the most stylish ski hotels in France. Opening next month, the revamped 1960’s structure combines warm esoteric flair with sleek modern lines and stylish luxury interiors. It is situated in Avoriaz, in the heart of the Portes du Soleil region - one of the largest ski areas in the world. The hotel features an indoor pool, outside Jacuzzi and world-class Pure Altitude spa. Double rooms from £160 per night, including breakfast. easyJet (0843 104 5000/easyjet.com) flies London Stansted to Geneva from £70 return.

Mineral Lodge FRANCE

Not your traditional chalet. Featuring only five, individually rentable rooms this temple to minimalist cool would be more at home in a swish Manhattan townhouse than French mountain slope: brushed steel and walls of pure glass knock knees with waterfall showers and digital art. If you can tear yourself away – the food is home-cooked fare and the lift up to Les Arcs, and 425km of fresh powder skiing, is only 50m from the door. i-Escape (0117 946 7072/i-escape. com) offers double rooms at Mineral Lodge from £136 per night, including breakfast. easyJet (as before) flies London Stansted to Geneva from £70 return.

Beautiful mountains by day, gourmet Italian food by night – could there be anything finer? Located in the heart of the Dolomites, at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy’s most popular resort, this chalet-inspired 20-room hotel oozes funky understated style: wooden floors with plush velvet armchairs, fourposter beds and in-room candle baths. Expect ski-romance, cranked up to Italian standards. There’s also a spa specialising in seawater treatments, with an ice waterfall and healing salt cave thrown in. Mr & Mrs Smith (0330 100 3180/ mrandmrssmith.com) offers double rooms at the DV Boutique Hotel from £118 per night. Ryanair (0871 246 0000/ryanair.com) flies Stansted to Milan from £40 return.

Hotel Tri Studnicky SLOVAKIA

Eastern Europe may not have the facilities of the bigger players, but what they lack in size they make up for in value. Travel Slovakia (travelslovakia.sk) offers three-night packages to Jasna, Slovakia’s largest ski resort, from £475 for two people including lift passes and half-board accommodation. But not just any old accommodation: the Hotel Tri Studnicky, is one of Slovakia’s best boutique abodes. A striking building with authentic timber and rustic stone interiors lavished with quirky modern furniture. Post-ski, a visit to the wellness centre is a must, it has its own ‘mountain beach’ to relax on. Ryanair (as before) flies London Stansted to Bratislava from £52 return

Whitepod SWITZERLAND

For a ski getaway with a difference, Whitepod is an eco-friendly igloo inspired camp on the remote mountains of Les Cerniers, near Monthey, Switzerland. No noisy bars, no crowded slopes: just you, nature and two private ski slopes perfect for beginners and families. Each cosy pod features a wood burning stove, handcrafted artisan furniture and huge double beds covered in sheepskin throws. If Vogue did winter camping, this would be where they’d come. i-Escape (0117 946 7072 i-escape.com) offers two-nights at Whitepod from £323 per night (based on two sharing), including breakfast, ski equipment and use of the private slopes. British Airways (0844 493 0787/ ba.com) flies London City Airport to Zurich from £97 return.

Sikes and Nancy is a oneman show by James Swanton, who recreates this macabre adaptation of Oliver Twist that Charles Dickens himself once took on the road for his famous public readings. Back in Victorian times women fainted and the audience was shocked into silence by the blood and guts melodrama. The audience at Cramphorn Theatre, Chelmsford, can also expect to be startled by Swanton’s grisly version. It transfers to London’s West End Trafalgar Studios for a Christmas season of Dickens With A Difference, alongside Miss Haversham’s Expectations in December. Friday, November 14, 8pm Tickets: £13.50, 01245 606505/ chelmsford.gov.uk

HEAR

Book your tickets this weekend to hear Andy Fairweather Low and his band at Harlow Playhouse on Thursday. Ingatestone Pedallers Social Cycling Group

A wheely wheely good adventure

I

F YOU enjoy getting on your bike but don’t like cycling alone, or worry you have to be a speed demon like Bradley Wiggins to join a local club, we have the perfect twowheel solution for you. The Ingatestone Pedallers are a social cycling group who offer enjoyable rides each month around the county. Many of the rides are themed so you can appreciate some history along the way too. Organiser Robert Fletcher explains how the group

GET I N TOUCH

came about. “Ingatestone Pedallers really came out of London 2012 and the surge of interest in cycling, not just track or road racing but social cycling too. Paul Jeater a local parish councillor placed an article about cycling in the village in the PC newsletter at the end of 2012, by early 2013 we had booked three or four rides up to the summer which were then extended on a monthly basis until November 2013.” Robert continues: “There are currently about 20

people on the mailing list and the numbers on rides seem to fluctuate around the 12-15 mark. “We have a fairly broad membership in age terms although we stipulate that all under-16s must be with an adult.” This year, rides began in March and due to finish this month with the 11-mile ‘Shenfield Crosspedal’ taking place next Sunday, November 23 at 10am, starting and finishing at Market Place, Ingatestone. The route which weaves

its way around the quiet roads and cycle paths around Shenfield will also pay tribute to the First World War centenery commemorations passing three WWI and WWII airfield sites. A Boxing

Day walk for all is also planned to The White Hart at Margaretting Tye. Joining the Ingatestone Pedallers is a great way of improving your fitness, meeting like-minded people and having fun!

For more information on how to join the Ingatestone Pedallers on their monthly rides contact Robert Fletcher, 07910 679379 or email rfletcher189@gmail.com. A Facebook page “Ingatestone Pedallers” is posted regularly with details and photos of rides.

MOTORING WINTER DRIVING

Wise up on darker days ROAD safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist is encouraging all road users to see and be seen through the coming winter months. Darker days bring poor visibility and higher risk of collisions, simply because it can be harder to spot hazards. However, a combination of straightforward actions can reduce these risks. “Let’s start with how well we see,” suggests GEM chief executive David Williams MBE. “Research has shown that we can lose 40 per cent of our eyesight over a number of years, without even noticing. So booking an eye test is a good way to ensure we can see and react to what’s happening around us when we’re behind the wheel.” “Keeping vehicle lights clean and free of dirt means they’ll do their job more effectively. Check wipers, too, as they do a vital job in keeping your windscreen clear,” said David Williams. Other easy measures can make a big difference in maximizing visibility: • Removing ice and snow from lights, windows and mirrors is a priority before setting

off on any journey in cold weather. • Glare from low winter sun can reduce visibility too. In some circumstances, especially in the early morning and late afternoon, glare can leave drivers with no forward vision at all. Reflected glare from wet roads can also seriously compromise what we’re able to see. • Don’t delay switching on your lights. Even if your view of the road ahead is good, you may be much less visible to other road users, especially if you drive a dark-coloured vehicle. • Even if your car is fitted with ‘automatic lights’, check that they are switched on in daylight fog, heavy rain or snow as the sensors may not operate in such conditions. Also remember that daytime running lights are only fitted to the front of vehicles making cars difficult to see from the rear in gloomy weather. David Williams added: “Just about all the information we need as drivers comes from what we see. Therefore, ensuring we see as much as possible will help us to stay safe, and will mean we’re doing our bit to keep others around us safe as well.”

TEST DRIVE NISSAN PULSAR

Nissan’s

Hatch A

FTER a gap of seven years, Nissan has returned to the hatchback segment of the car market with the new Pulsar. The hatchback is an important part of any manufacturer’s portfolio, as it is the second largest sector in the UK, accounting for a quarter of all sales. The Pulsar faces some tough competition from the likes of the Ford Focus, Toyota Auris, Kia Cee’d, Hyundai i30 and SEAT Leon. Advanced technologies are one of the key themes of the new Pulsar as it offers a range of safety-based features all under the umbrella of its Safety Shield system. Available are Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot and Lane Departure Warning and Forward Emergency Braking. Nissan’s revolutionary Around View Monitor (AVM) brings even more technology

to the Pulsar. Combining image feeds from tiny cameras mounted on the front grille, tailgate and both door mirrors, it gives a 360-degree overhead ‘bird’s eye view’ image around the Pulsar onto the 5.8in dashboard mounted screen. The AVM is only available on the top of the range Tekna, though. Class-leading wheelbase has

allowed Nissan to offer the Pulsar a very spacious interior and it enjoys extensive rear legroom. Front seat passengers are not forgotten either, as the door panels have been sculpted to give generous elbow room. The boot is of a decent size with a low loading lip and has a capacity of 385 litres, 1,395 litres with the 60/40 split rear seats folded down. Four levels of trim follow the familiar Nissan format of Visia, Acenta, n-tec and Tekna, and all models come with air

conditioning, alloy wheels, electric windows, tyre pressure monitoring system, six airbags, Stop/Start and a Drive Assist display panel in the centre of the instrument cluster. Choice of engines is either a 115PS 1.2-litre petrol engine or 110PS 1.5-litre diesel. Next year a 1.6-litre petrol engine will be added to range. Prices start at £15,995 for the 1.2-litre petrol Visia and finish with 1.5-litre diesel Tekna at £21,945. Gearbox choice is six-speed manual across the range, with the X-Tronic automatic gearbox only available on the 1.2-litre petrol model. Visually the Pulsar shares the front grille design of the Qashqai and X-Trail. Styling is conservative but thoroughly modern and once inside that long wheelbase shows interior space really is as good as claimed. I sat in one of the rear seats and was impressed by

the legroom and generous headroom which would easily accommodate the tallest passenger. From the driver’s point of view, all-round visibility is excellent thanks to the Pulsar’s deep windows and slim pillars, and there’s plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering to help you find the ideal driving position. The dashboard is well laid out, dominated by the 5.8in colour screen which controls access to the infotainment system, sat nav, Bluetooth, audio streaming and mobile phone integration and DAB radio. In between the speedometer and rev counter in the steering wheel binnacle is the 5in Drive-Assist display which can relay 22 different items of information ranging from turn-by-turn navigation, driver advice and warnings and a raft of car performance data. It also allows the driver to

customise many of the Pulsar’s electronic systems, such as indicator, wiper and door lock settings. Out on the road the Pulsar is a comfortable car, the seats are fairly soft and provide enough support in the right places. The suspension has obviously been tuned for comfort and one thing I did notice was it was very quiet inside when cruising along. The petrol engine wins by a short head against the diesel. Quieter in operation, it has a bit more get up and go and belies its 1.2-litre capacity. It only loses to the diesel in the mpg stakes, recording 56.5 combined against the diesels 78.5mpg. The Pulsar is competing in a very tough market, but overall it has a lot to commend. Interior space is big plus point, it’s nice to drive and wellequipped for the price.

POLLINGER ON FORM

Big Sam’s tactics are proving a promising point WEST HAM UNITED. Before now, whenever you’d hear people discuss Sam Allardyce, the subject of his tactics was usually the most divisive. If you wanted to see the Hammers continue playing top flight football, you’d have to sacrifice an attractive playing style for something Big Sam-ish. Today, West Ham are turning into a completely different animal. Indeed these are promising times at Upton Park, with the Hammers fourth in the table. Big Sam has created his least Big Sam-ish team yet, and he’s using it to out-tactic the world.

A

BRIGHT, crisp November afternoon saw the two teams standing for a perfectly observed minutes silence before a keenly contested U17 League 1 fixture. Westcliff started with the slope in their favour, but with Brentwood’s forwards competing fiercely, they were unable to capitalise on the advantage. Consistent pressure from Brentwood forced a succession of penalties which culminated in a yellow card for Westcliff. Using the extra man to great effect, Josh Stannard crossed the line to open the scoring and take Brentwood into 5-0 lead. From the kick off, Westcliff spent the last five minutes of the first half camped on the Brentwood line but tenacious and resilient defence kept them at bay. The visitors began the second half, determined to even up the score and put more pressure on the Brentwood defence. However, excellent work at the ruck popped the ball

n

CHARLTON ATHLETIC. Igor Vetokele maintained his remarkable form by scoring the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 away win over Reading, despite battling a calf injury during the game. It represents his eight league goals in an impressive debut season for the 22-year-old.

n

LEYTON ORIENT. Weeks after Italian chairman Francesco Becchetti had made Italian sporting director Mauro Milanese the first Italian manager of the club, the O’s signed former Italian international Andrea Dossena. Dossena, who has previously played for the likes of Liverpool and Napoli arrives with the club in dire need of a boost.

n

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE. A mediocre start to the season continues with a 0-0 draw against Southport in the first round of the FA Cup. The replay, on Tuesday, November 18, adds another game to a demanding league schedule, and the players are unlikely to gain much confidence after failing to beat a team from the division below. into Jake Harcourt’s hands and he executed a cross field kick with great precision into the Westcliff half. Chay Pollinger was there to capitalise on the bounce of the ball to run in for the second try of the game and then converted his own score. With continued hard work, the forwards were setting up good opportunities for the backs to thrive and control the second half. Pollinger then chasing one of his own up and unders, capitalised on the Westcliff fullback spilling the ball, picked up the loose ball and crossed the line for his second try. Pressure from Westcliff forced a series of penalties from the Brentwood team and eventually this told and the visitors created space to run in a very well worked try. Two penalties late on from Pollinger gave Brentwood some breathing space, rounding off a good afternoon for him and a very good win for Brentwood.

BRENTWOOD took the long journey up to Spalding expecting a tough game from the side placed third in the league. Brentwood appeared slow to the ball, finding themselves on the back foot from the off and conceded a string of penalty corners which they kept out but looked increasingly frantic. Another was given away and the Spalding forward, who had tried various routines, threw a powerful drag-flick to the bottom left of the goal to give the home side a deserved lead. This was the wake-up call Brentwood needed as they began to compete and play the patient passing game. They probed the defence but to little outcome, as the game momentum began to swing evenly, with each team

finding scoring opportunities. Brentwood found their chance back into the game as a ball from Jak Taylor on the edge of the circle cut through the defence, finding Aaron Doyle who burst past his marker to deflect the ball over the keeper into the net. Brentwood looked to have saved the half going into the break on evens, but were denied as Spalding gained the lead from a fierce shot from the top of the circle. The half had barely started, but Nick Hull was off like a shot, with a searing run down the left wing before reaching the byline and reversing it to

Alex Henderson, who lay in wait and hammered it into the far corner. In a 15 minute period, Spalding had no answer to the relentless Brentwood attack, who piled on the pressure and looked at ease with a strong passing game, but failed to find any further result in front of goal. It was déjà vu as Brentwood were found to be lapsing and failed to respond as the game turned in Spalding’s favour, putting another goal between them and Brentwood. It seemed as though the fight had been taken out of Brentwood. The game began to come to its end and frustratingly Brentwood capitulated and let two goals in at the death as they couldn’t close out the game, giving the score a somewhat flattering 5-3 to Spalding.

Cool Baker seals win L

EOPARDS made a winning start to their Division One campaign with a narrow victory against the Reading Rockets, at the Brentwood Centre last Friday evening. In a battle between last season’s top two in Division One, the visitors led for just one minute of a tight encounter and trailed by eight with under two minutes remaining but forced a thrilling finish before the home side sealed the win at the free-throw line. Both sides went into the game under-sized with Lawrence Brown and Lukas Wingegarner missing for the Big Cats and Danny Carter sitting out for the Rockets, and Leopards’ coach Youngblood was forced to come out of retirement to finish with four points

Brentwood Leopards 69 Reading Rockets 65 Division One

and six rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Dave Ajumobi led the home side with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, with Byron Richards adding three treys in his 13 points. Debutant Matic Zupanc marked his debut with 11 points, while Ronnie Baker showed a calming influence at key times, finishing with ten points. Rockets were led by 13 points from Adria Baiget Marco with Deion Turman and Matt Davis adding 11 each. Leopards had led by 10 at the final

break, and scores from Albert Margai Van Beest saw the home team and move 59-50 ahead with four minutes remaining and Zupanc made it an 11 point game with three minutes on the clock. A Turnman dunk followed by a Davis trey saw Rockets back within six before Youngblood replied at the other end. The visitors still had one more run left as they hit five unanswered points capped by a pair of Guardia Marti free-throws to make it a three point game with 40 seconds on the clock, and after Ajumobi and Guardia Marti had each split a pair at the line it was 64-61 with 25 seconds left. In the end it was Baker who sealed

the win as the 45-year-old remained ice cool at the foul to sink four straight shots. The Big Cats return to the Brentwood Centre on Sunday, November 23 when they host Bradford before Newham Neptunes are the visitors to Harlow Leisure Zone on Saturday, November 29. Leopards make the long trip to Tees Valley Mohawks on Saturday. Leopards beat the Middlesbrough-based team in the 2013 National Trophy final as well as knocking them out of the play-offs in the same campaign, and last season saw Robert Youngblood’s Leopards team record two narrow victories against them.

GREG Benbow’s second half own goal gifted Brentwood Town a narrow 1-0 victory over Chatham Town at Maidstone Road. The Blues saw plenty of the ball but struggled to break down the Chatham defence until Benbow headed Sam Bantick’s cross into his own net in the 67th minute. Sherwin Stanley should have gave the Blues the lead in the 17th minute after Robbie Rees dispossessed centre-half Liam Hickey and crossed into the box but the in-form striker made a meal of the shot. Chatham’s best chance fell to their top-scorer Austin Gacheru but the striker was denied by a superb lunging block by skipper Stokes. The Blues remained the brighter side in the second half but they struggled to create a clear-cut opportunity. The home side switched off as Rees took a quick corner to Bantick and the winger’s cross was inadvertently headed into the net by Chatham’s striker Benbow. As full-time approached Chatham upped the pressure but they were unable to rescue anything from the game as Brentwood’s resolute defence stood firm. This win leaves Brentwood lying fourth in Ryman League Division One North.

NHBC – the mark of a quality home

...Buying a new home is a big decision, so you’ll want to know that your property is of good quality and your investment well protected. Only builders approved and registered by NHBC can offer Buildmark, and they must build to the detailed technical standards we have been developing and updating for more than 75 years. It will give you peace of mind to know that all new homes with NHBC’s Buildmark have been independently inspected at key stages during construction, and come with 10 years’ warranty and insurance. This gives you the reassurance that, on the rare occasion when something does go wrong, we’re here to help you.

So, before you buy a new home, make sure it has Buildmark.
