A promising and prosperous future lies ahead for Bursa Bursa, which made its presence felt with its charming and restructured face, upgraded its welfare standards by launching diverse range of infrastructural facilities, including those in the beaches of the city. Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire with a history dating back to centuries at the heart of the silk and spice trade takes remarkable strides to become a brand city of the globe. We have recently interviewed Recep Altepe, Metropolitan Mayor of Bursa.

What activities do you undertake to make Bursa a remarkable city? Do you have any benchmark from this standpoint? We, Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa, strive for making Bursa a brand city. We envisage a brandnew, powerful and competitive Bursa for the future, based on its unique historic and cultural richness. Within this framework, we launch a series of infrastructural investments in order to upgrade the quality of life in Bursa. Our projects related to the future of Bursa make their presence felt abroad as well. As known, The European Commission organizes the European Green Capital Award (EGCA), which recognises and rewards local efforts to improve the environment, the economy and the quality of life in cities. The EGCA is given each year to a city, which is leading the way in environmentally friendly urban living. Cities differ enormously and sharing concrete examples of what a European Green Capital can look like is essential if further progress is to be made.

Recep Altepe

Metropolitan Mayor of Bursa

The objectives of the Award are to: Reward cities that have a consistent record of achieving high environmental standards; encourage cities to commit to ongoing and ambitious goals for further environmental improvement and sustainable development; provide a role model to inspire other cities and promote best practices and experience in all other European cities. Bursa and Istanbul were nominated for the 2017 EGCA. Bursa, being a prominent member of Unesco World Heritage List, is also renowned for its award winning stadium. We closely monitor recent developments in contemporary urbanization by selecting major benchmarks around the world. Designed and constructed by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, the new stadium of Bursa has aroused great interest both at home and abroad. The city of Bursa, the fourth most populous city of Turkey, has a new football stadium – the Timsah Arena. The name, meaning Crocodile Arena, is derived from the local football team, Bursaspor, having a strong influence in the stadium’s design. The structure’s most striking feature, its roof, resembles a crocodile curled around the ground, complete with open mouth. The stadium and the surrounding park are well connected with the public transport system. Also the city centre is just a minutes-walk away.

Bursa attracts majority of Arab tourists coming to Turkey. Do you have any specific projects for Arab tourists preferring Bursa? Bursa has turned out to be the first choice Arab tourists in 2014 and during the first half of 2015. The recent increase in Arab tourists in Turkey has brought along with it a peak of interest by tourism operators from the region. Some of the largest chain hotel operators are now out on the hunt for locations particularly in Bursa. Turkey’s increasing influence over the Middle East of late has also resulted in pos-

itively affecting the tourism sector. It is this increase in numbers of tourists from the Middle East that has brought along with it a peaked interest by tourism investors. There is a demand from overseas investors in particular the Arabs who are keen to own a second home in Bursa, which will only prove beneficial to the country’s economy and will also add value and credibility to the area. Bursa is the home of outstanding natural beauty, which is complemented by its vast historical background. Bursa has a lot to brag about particularly as this province was the first Ottoman capital, and as such is endowed with an array of monuments, mosques, tombs, baths, etc. Real estate investment in Bursa is one of the first choice for Arab tourists and

investors. Apart from being an industrial city, Bursa has a rich culture and tourism capacity that attract Arab visitors. Many Arab businessmen are planning to make investments in housing and shopping mall projects. Almost thirty percent of tourists going on holiday at the Uludağ ski resort are Arabs. Bursa has been a profitable place for Arab investors for many years. So, Arab and Middle Eastern tourism has gained momentum more than ever. Both city and mountain hotels show full occupancy. Arab tourists could be seen at nearly all hotels. Arabs used to prefer to visit Uludağ and Bursa in summer. As known, Bursa and Cumalıkızık were added to World Heritage List of UNESCO. Uludağ, being one of the most remarkable assets of Bursa, offers a unique natural beauty. We think that Uludağ could be regarded as Turkey’s Davos in terms of certain international standards. Uludağ offers a splendid and panaromic view of Bursa from Bakacak. We launch a series of infrastructural projects for Uludağ in order to make it a four season tourism center. Today, one can reach to the ski center of Uludağ from Bursa within 22 minutes by cable car. In the summer, the mountain is also very popular with tourists and day trippers. Uludağ is within a national park, there is easy walking up the gentle slopes, beautiful glacial lakes and forests and Alpine meadows to picnic by, plenty of hotels, cable cars and fantastic food. In winter, Uludağ is transformed into a very popular and busy ski resort. Uludag is the largest and most celebrated winter-sports and skiing center in Turkey. It is easily accessible by car or cable-car (Teleferik in Turkish). The area is also a national park and is worth a visit at any time of the year. The accommodation is high quality offering the opportunity to enjoy the mountain, with a variety of entertainment and sport activities.

Could you give information on the remains of historic basilica in İznik? The discovery of the basilica was named as one of top 10 discoveries of 2014 by the Archaeological Institute of America. As known, underwater archaeological work has started on the remains of a 1,600-year-old basilica that was discovered at the beginning of 2014 under Lake İznik, in the northwestern province of Bursa. Conducted by the Uludağ University Archaeology Department in collaboration with the Culture and Tourism Ministry and Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, the work aims to obtain detailed information about the basilica. The Roman-era basilica, which lies in 1.5 to 2 meters of water, was discovered while photographing the city from the air to make an inventory of historical and cultural artifacts. Archaeologists, historians and art historians believe that the structure collapsed during an earthquake that occurred in the region.

Having a remarkable development in terms of wellknown quality standards, Bursa, judged by a series of criteria, has been selected as one of the best cities of the world

In the first stage of the operations at the site, the area of the basilica was surrounded with sheet metal on the coast before a 25-person team from the university conducted work to open the area to tourism. The remains of a nearly 1,600-year-old basilica is now set to become an underwater museum. The underwater museum project, approved by the Culture and Tourism Ministry, will be carried out by the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality, the sponsor of the project.

What other tourism projects do you have in order to give an impetus to the tourism potential of Bursa?

What is your vision for the future of Bursa? As Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa, what activities and projects do you implement to promote Bursa abroad?

Being an industrial hub of Turkey, Bursa has also turned out to be a prominent tourism center of the country. We initiated restoration and infrastructural works related to the beaches of Bursa particularly for Mudanya.

Our vision is primarily based on upgrading the quality of life and living in Bursa, by utilizing from the natural richness of Bursa. Attracting attention for its natural beauty as well as its rich cultural heritage, Bursa is also a much preferred holiday resort for foreigners.

As I noted earlier, we are determined to upgrade the tourism potential of Bursa. We put particular emphasis on the beaches of Bursa which include Gemlik, Mudanya and Karacabey beaches of 110 km long. The region would serve as an ideal beach for summer tourism. The beaches of Bursa are equipped with up to date infrastructural facilities. From this

The Flooded Forests of Karacabey arouse the interests of nature lovers and enthusiasts. been selected as one of the best cities of the world. Bursa which made its presence felt with its charming and restructured face, upgraded its welfare standards by launching diverse range of infrastructural facilities, including those in the beaches of the city. Located in the Marmara Region, Bursa takes place at the southeast of Marmara Sea. Karacabey, Mudanya, Gemlik, Yenikoy, Bayramdere, Kursunlu, Mesudiye, Egerce and Esence beaches are magnificent places to enjoy yourself. Also, along the coasts of Iznik and Ulubat Lakes, there are beaches that will make you happy. Apart from sea buses of BUDO connecting Bursa to Istanbul efficiently, the vessel named “AKSEMSEDDIN”, a passenger ship, sails through the waters of Iznik Lake between

Karacabey Longoz Forest, known also as the Flooded Forest, has been awaiting the discovery of the unmatched scenic spots and thousands of species it has been harboring for many years. This hidden beauty that became popular recently is now hosting many visitors from all over Turkey. The 2000 hectare Kocaçay Delta where the Karacabey Longoz Forest is located where the Kocaçay that has been formed when Karadere flowing in from the Bird Lake combined with the Uluabat River from the Uluabat Lake and the Nilüfer Creek from Bursa meets the Marmara sea. The diversity here has produced a living space for many different living things while also putting forth scenic views. Dalyan and Poyraz Lakes with a total area of 194 hectares are located at the western half of the delta in addition to

600 hectares of reeds and Flooded Forests covering an area of 730 hectares. Karacabey Longoz is one of the liveliest examples of the Flooded Forests that are about to be extinct in Europe which put forth views worth seeing during the summer when the waters from the spring season ebb. Kingfisher, white pelican, broad-billed sandpiper, bar-tailed godwit and snake eagle are mong the 217 different species of birds that have been detected here as a result of the studies carried out. The region also has a flora including special species such as ash tree, alder, willow and loddon lily and water lilies.

Iznik and Orhangazi. As for the congress tourism, Merinos Congress Culture Centre is composed of two important basic structures, which is located in Merinos Park; one of them is historical Merinos Factory, which was converted to Culture Centre with a restoration work, and the other is Congress Centre that was just constructed. The buildings, which were designed in a flexible way to use together or separately, have a special availability in being a complex building for arrangement of -great or small- any kind of organizations.

With scenes that rival the savannahs of Africa, the Longoz forests are faced with an increased attention that will compensate the many years of neglect. Nature continues to amaze while making us feel as if inside a documentary with lakes full of water lilies that charm visitors during the spring and wild animals that graze around national park of rich flora and fauna. Summer activities, such as trekking and camping, also are popular. The prehistoric village, located 25 kilometers south of Bursa and three kilometers east of the town of Akçalar, was inhabited roughly 8,500 years ago and may have been one of the first agricultural communities in Anatolia. Archeologists excavating at Aktopraklık Höyük, the site of a neolithic village on the outskirts of the Turkish city of Bursa, are now able to piece together more details about dress, burial rituals and daily life during that era thanks to the remarkable preservation at the site. Aktopraklık Höyük is only one of Anatolia’s many well-preserved Neolithic villages. Such villages offer archeologists a chance to peer into the critical transition period between nomadic life and the advent of permanent settlements, providing clues as to the nature of early settled life.

To sum up, we can say that a promising and bright future lie ahead for beaches of Bursa. Bursa will be able to reach at its targets by utilizing its potential in an efficient manner. Having a remarkable development in terms of well-known quality standards, Bursa, judged by a series of criteria, has

Basaran Ulusoy, Chairman of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TURSAB), warned that Turkey had the power to retaliate. He said “It is Europe itself that will suffer from this decision. countries and the intense efforts of the Turkish government to improve cooperation with the Arab world were the main factors triggering the increase in the number of Arab visitors. We have made important advances in culture, health and congress tourism.” Mehmet Akkuş, Chairman, South Marmara Regional Board of the Turkish Association of Travel Agents-TÜRSAB said that public sector and private sector should cooperate with each other in order to upgrade the tourism sector. Built by Orhan Gazi as the hamam of the Complex, outside the Hisar (castle), the structure is the first bazaar hamam of the city at the same time. Construction date is accepted as 1339, the same build date as the Orhan Mosque. It has the special feature of being a double-hamam and met the needs of the bazaar up the 16th century until but was heavily damaged during the fire of 1584. After the repairs were completed, the women’s section was being used as a hamam and men’s section as coffeehouse. After the bazaar fire of 1958, it has undergone repairs and today, it serves as a shopping center where the touristic products that have become the symbol of Bursa are being sold.

Bedesten (covered Turkish bazaar) This building which made up the core of banking and stock market was being used by Yildirim Bayezid as a place that most valuable goods of the country were being bought and sold along with being used as a storing/hiding place for these valuable assets. Back then, the task of securely hiding money and valuable assets were met by the bedestens which is now undertaken by banks. The entrance to the bedesten is through the doors which are in the middle of its four facades. Today, the building is being used as a jewelry bazaar.

Bali Bey Inn It was built by Hamza Bey’s son Bali Bey in order to yield income for the masjid and its public soup-kitchen in Yenisehir. It is the only inn in Bursa that was built as three stories. It is known that the entrance door of the inn is steep and adjacent to forty steps and that the vehicles have a difficult time reaching the courtyard which is high and on a steep road. Today, it is being used as a crafts bazaar and for restaurant and eating and drinking purposes.

We can learn how they lived and how they ate and much more.” Recep Altepe, Metropolitan Mayor of Bursa added, “The prehistoric village was inhabited roughly 8,500 years ago and may have been one of the first agricultural communities in Anatolia. Archeologists excavating at Aktopraklık Höyük, the site of a neolithic village on the outskirts of the city of Bursa, are now able to piece together more details about dress, burial rituals and daily life during that era thanks to the remarkable preservation at the site. The archaeological excavations at Bursa’s Akçalar reveals 8,500 years of history of the city. Turkey’s first archaeology park is in the area.” Akcalar Aktopraklik Hoyuk Archaeopark Exhibiton and Survey Building Project won the “sustainability” prize of Union of Historical Towns in 2010.

The works of the artisans turning metal into art to be displayed

BURSA-Recep Altepe, Mayor, Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa said, “ We are planning to establish a museum to display the hand made knifes of artisans operating in Bursa. Knife making was brought to Bursa, by the Balkan immigrants after the ‘’93 War’’. From this day forward, through the immigrant craftsmen and the apprentices they’ve raised, the profession of knife making has evolved and arrived at the level it is at today. However, when we look at the adventures of the blacksmiths who formed the basis of Bursa knife making, we can see from the records that it has a seven-hundred-year history. The Museum would display historical development of the hand made knifes.” Mülazım Gülşen, Chairman, Association of Knife Manufacturers of Bursa said that the initiative of the Municipality regarding the Museum of Bursa Knifes would contribute to the promotion of the works of artisans. Between all the hand crafts of Bursa, reputation of the knives still continues to this day which has a special place in the past and up until today. Starting from Osmangazi, equipment of the first seven Sultans, such as swords, daggers, axes and spears are the handwork of Bursa blacksmiths. Today’s knife makers were the blacksmiths of the past.

Bursa was represented at Turkic World Union of Museums Meeting held in Ulan Batur

The ancient Roman theater in İznik has been cleaned and its environment has been reorganized. when the workd are done, the theater site will open to tourists. ULAN BATUR- Turkic World Union of Museums Meeting was held in Ulan Batur, Mongolia. Bursa was represented by Ahmet Erdönmez, Coordinator of City Museum who is also Culture and Art Advisor to the Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa. He furnished detailed information on the museums of Bursa and the Turkish culture during the event. Dresses of Ottoman era were displayed. The parade aroused great interest from the participants of various countries. The event was participated by directors and curators of museums of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, the Russian Federation: Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Sakha (Yakutia), Tyva and the Khakas Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Crimea (Ukraine). They talked about museums’activities in their countries and regions and presented their collections. Ahmet Erdönmez, Coordinator of City Museum pointed out, “During the Ottoman period, Bursa continued to be the source of most royal silk products. Bursa remained to be the most important administrative and commercial center for centuries. Beside trade and economy, Bursa is attractive with its life quality, rich culture and various art activities.”

“This international forum on museums has clearly shown how important such events are. Indeed, as time goes by, the world is also changing. Museums should therefore not only promote culture and art but also play an enlightening role. Young generations should be made aware of our history, present and future”

“The project tries to make İznik one of the most important centers in the world. We shed light on İznik’s tile work and its historical richness from the Seljuk, Byzantine, Ottoman and Roman period within the scope of this project,” said Osman Sargın, Mayor of İznik .

Ahmet Erdönmez added, “ During the forum where participants from various countries of the world came together, various issues on cooperation were discussed including exhibition exchanges, joint projects, seminars and roundtable discussions. Museum directors who expressed their interest in activities carried out by other museums also stressed the fact that such fora are absolutely essential for the development of museums’ activities in general.”

The artefacts in the region are thought to date back to Ottoman and Seljuk States, along with Eastern Roman and Bithynia periods.

A team consulted by Associate Professor Ayşın Özügül from Uludağ University, along with many artefacts in the city, with more than 450 different works at 10 new districts, will restorate the Roman Theatre and open its doors to public as theatre.

Following the findings, the relievo of the theatre will be prepared for restorations, and the theatre gain back its original appearance. The Roman theatre in İznik (ancient Nicaea) was built

in AD 111-112 in the reign of Trajan. The site has been subject to constant earthquakes and during the Arab invasions of the 8th century blocks were taken from the theatre to build fortifications. During the Byzantine period it was used as a dump and in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods ceramic workshops and kilns occupied the site. The site has been excavated since 1980. The theatre is unusual in that it was built on a flat site, with the seating supported by a series of vaulted structures. Metin Sözen, Chairman, ÇEKÜL, the Foundation for the Protection and Promotion of the Environment and Cultural Heritage has praised Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa on the occasion of the Municipality’s support and initiative for the excavation and archeological works on the Historic Roman Theatre.

Bursa declared to be a friendly city for autistic persons BURSA-Mina Association of Living with Autism (MOYAD) has recently declared Bursa as a friendly city for autistic persons. Autistic children have visited Abdülkadir Karlık, Deputy Mayor of Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa and they expressed their appreciation to the Municipality for the support and friendly approach to the problems of the autistic persons. Canan Cihan Kılıç, Chairman of MOYAD said that Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa had been sincerely helpful as for the rehabilition and employment problems of the members of MOYAD.” We are grateful for the efforts and constructive approach extented by the Municipality. During the visit, Fehmihan Kanberoğlu, a well known Chef, awarded by ANCA, on the occasion of the Interna-

We are witnessing the development of both; “health tourism” is becoming higher value and simultaneously “eco- tourism” is started to be understood and accepted in Bursa. Besides, Bursa is an important value with historic heritage and nature. Also, Bursa is available with its rich cultural background to open new door for Eco-tourism which is popular in the world today. Eco-tourism, which includes natural life, natural nutrition and aging in health condition, can be performed easily in many places of Bursa. We especially highlight of Health tourism and Eco-tourism can be combined and seen in different dimension in 3. Age health: aging in the health condition and wellness areas. The main reasons of the health problems we encounter, are most of time excessive stress, non-natural nutrition sources, environmental and air pollution. The biggest dream of people, who live under adverse conditions in the crowded and noisy atmosphere of city, is to be able to have natural nutrition sources and spend their time with nature in the peaceful and clean areas of nature. Perhaps majority of us could not find chance to take fresh egg to our hands from chicken coop, could not drink milk that we milked from udder by our hands or maybe eat a tomato, pepper or cucumber that we have grown at piece of land or maybe we could not even imagine that. Many locations of Bursa have rooted heritage with a lot of element such as food and natural life culture. Natural farming is still done in our villages and they are 15-20 minutes far to Bursa. Our animals are fed with wildflowers and natural nutrition. Our villagers still maintain their traditions for

thousands of years and produce very natural vegetable, fruit and animal products. This potential has become tourism value by recent works. Health tourism and Eco-tourism are combined in many places of Bursa. There are important hot water and healing water sources for thermal tourism which is the most important factor of health tourism in our districts like Inegöl, Mustafa Kemal Pasa, Orhaneli, Harmancık, Karacabey, Yıldırım also these districts have available fertile nature and culture for Eco-tourism. We have lots of areas especially for older patients who come around the world for the tourism of 3. Age, in these areas patients can find opportunities for their medical treatment s while getting older in a healthy condition with thermal culture. Besides of these they can benefit from all of the opportunities of Eco-tourism in a natural environment. Eco-tourism is an important potential which will support health tourism in the point we can both compete international and inside with other provinces, while Bursa is becoming model of health tourism. Bursa is candidate both in Eco-tourism and health tourism for being health capital city in the future with Uludag, natural lakes, sea, hot water sources, natural canyons, endless plateaus and appropriate climate for all kind of agricultures. Lately Bursa’s local governments have worked about Eco-tourism and these works are promising for improvement of Eco-tourism. We have areas which are open for Eco-tourism in some locations. Bursa will be different paradise to especially for our patient groups of 3. Age at the point of Eco-tourism and Health tourism in the near future.

The “glaucoma valve” specially designed by Professor Mehmet Baykara in action. BURSA- Professor Mehmet Baykara of Faculty of Medicine, Uludağ University has developed a brand-new special device, so called “glaucoma valve” to lower the increased pressure in the eye. Professor Mehmet Baykara said that the valve had been instrumental to eliminate the pressure in the eye. He added that

According to Professor Baykara, glaucoma is a term for a group of eye disorders which result in damage to the optic nerve. This is most often due to increased pressure in the eye. The disorders can be roughly divided into two main categories: “open-angle” and “closed-angle” (or “angle closure”) glaucoma. Open-angle chronic glaucoma is painless, tends to develop slowly over time and often has no symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly. It is treated with either glaucoma medication to lower the pressure, or with various pressure-reducing glaucoma surgeries. Closed-angle glaucoma, however, is characterized

by sudden eye pain, redness, nausea and vomiting, and other symptoms resulting from a sudden spike in intraocular pressure, and is treated as a medical emergency. Glaucoma can permanently damage vision in the affected eye(s), first by decreasing peripheral vision (reducing the visual field), and then potentially leading to blindness if left untreated.

Abdülkadir Karlık, Deputy Mayor of Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa said that the Municipality had always been sensitive to the problems of autistic persons. He also congratulated Chef Fehmihan Kanberoğlu on his success.

rgotherapy is a healthcare profession aiming to improve health and comfort of the individuals through significant and intentional activities. The principle objective of ergotherapy is to improve physical, sensorial, psychiatric and cognitive competencies of the individuals, to provide independence during daily life and to improve the quality of life by maintaining this. The point of action of ergotherapy in cerebral palsy is to treat the individual and to teach overcoming strategies through intentional and significant activities after the disorders that were or may be caused by cerebral palsy. • This profession is interested in treatment of sensorial, cognitive and motor disorders affecting participation of the individual for selfcare such as eating, walking, shopping etc., for reproducibility and participation into the free time activities. Get better, look better and feel better with ‘Rhinoplasty’ operation!

By Derya Bingol, Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon

R

hinoplasty is the surgical procedure of the nose usually performed by the plastic surgeons to achieve functional restoration, aesthetic improvement, and facially proportionate nose. It is commonly performed in order to provide a better shape and an open, functional nasal passage for airway. Rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging operations in aesthetic surgery, requiring recognition and analysis of the accompanying deformities and structured decisions to address the anatomic variables. The operation is done under usually general anesthesia and sometimes local anesthesia in the operating theater, via different incisional approaches; classified either as a closed or as an open rhinoplasty procedure. The closed technique may be done inside the nose, while the open approach have a small external incision at the base of the nose. During the operation according

to the requirements, the nasal framework is reshaped by reconstruction of the nasal bones and the cartilages. This reconstruction includes reduction, augmentation, reshaping, reforming or combinations of these procedures. Each rhinoplasty operation is unique for the person and is designed for the specific requirements of the patient. It commonly requires a one- night stay in the hospital. After the operation the patient needs to rest in bed with the head raised higher than the chest, to reduce bleeding and swelling and to prevent ecchymosis. A splint is taped to the outside of the nose to protect the nasal bony and cartilaginous framework and to support the new shape of the nose as it heals. This external splint remains in place for approximately one week. Internal splints are placed inside the nose and left

in place for 3 to seven days. The nose may be congested and slight bloody mucus drainage is commonly observed for a few days following operation. During the follow-up period; it may take several weeks, before the patient return to strenuous activities. It is recommended to use a sunscreen to prevent permanent discoloration; especially for daytime. Wearing eyeglasses or sunglasses on the nose is not permitted for at least four weeks. Swelling of the nose takes longer time to resolve and the time of complete resolution changes from person to person. However, the final result is commonly accepted to be obtained after approximately one year. In conclusion; the nose may have a big impact on self-image and appearance, because it is one of the most prominent features of the face, locating just at midface. So, the rhinoplasty is a reasonable option to consider for the patients who are unhappy with their noses for a long time.

Uludağ generates thermal water and thermal energy for Bursa medical doctors. To cite an example, Dr. Karl Ambros Bernard had focused on healing properties of thermal waters of Bursa in his book published in 1842. Medical tourism is a very important sector for the future. It has to be included as a priority in the future of Bursa which has many advantages. The thermal resources we have, are very important treasure that will help Bursa to stand out from its competitors. It should be considered a flagship in health tourism. Currently, thermal waters and our natural, cultural and historical riches in this regard, carry us to an advantageous position.

In addition to being a trading and industrial center with socio-economic growth, Bursa is a significant cultural and tourism center owing to its rich historic and cultural background. The city, which hosted many different civilizations throughout its history, today purports a kind of outdoor museum that attracts foreign tourists with its living history and nature. The Mount Uludag being a prominent tourism center of Bursa also generates thermal riches of the province. For centuries, people from all over the world have come to the thermal, hot springs of Bursa for healing. The thermal springs are “hamams” with an extra hot water pool inside and acquire hot water from nature without any heating. People discovered the therapeutic powers of Bursa’s thermal springs centuries ago. The spa holiday with its pampering and its health and beauty treatments may seem like a relatively new phenomenon, but the health giving properties of Bursa’s natural springs have been renowned since the early ages. With one of the best climates in the world, with a unique variety of nature, as well as one of the healthiest diets in the world, Bursa is the ideal proposal for psychological and physical health and the search for well-being. The celebrities such as Farah Diba and Princess Soraya of Iran, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn , Zsa Zsa Gabor had visited Bursa to benefit from the healing properties of thermal waters of Bursa. Promotion of European spa culture brings with it three different concepts: welfare, health, tradition. Bursa, with its rich and vast cultural heritage, combines welfare, health and tradition for centuries. We are waiting for our guests in Bursa to have rest, to freshen up, to visit natural and historic places, to ski in Uludag, and to discover new pleasures of palate as well as receiving their treatments and diverse range of health services.

We will continue to work harder and harder to protect Bursa’s thermal heritage and share it with all people.” EHTTA Chairman, Giuseppe Bellandi expressed his appreciation for the hospitality of the Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa. He said, “Bursa assumes a prominent place in regard to the areas of nature tourism, culture and history tourism as well as thermal and medical tourism.” EHTTA is a non-profit association based on the need to encourage, protect and enhance the thermal, artistic and cultural heritage throughout Europe. The main objectives of the association are: -To establish a strong network of partnerships between towns and spas, promoting exchanges of experience among the different cultural operators of the cities. -To promote the system at European level involving the institutions through support of European programs, in order to produce a European spa trail and to complete the established programs.

BURSA-Bursa, the only province in Turkey that is a member of the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA) hosted the General Assembly of the Association between Oct. 19 and Oct. 21. The three-day meeting welcomed the representatives of 36 cities from 13 countries. The main theme of the Assembly, which happens every year in a member city with a historical thermal identity was “Discovering the European Route of Thermal Heritage and Bursa: The City on the Silk Road.” Recep Altepe, Mayor of Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa said, “Bursa was once the heart of the Ottoman Empire. It sits in a geothermal area that boasts a number of hot springs. This is a place to come if you want a traditional experience because thermal waters and spas are known throughout the world. The minerals in the waters of Bursa are thought to have healing properties. Water is also pumped into a number of area hotels, which operate their own mineral pools for guests.” During the meeting, Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, Turkish Minister of Health said, “High quality health services are waiting for you in Bursa. Commenting on the importance of hosting EHTTA’s General Assembly in Bursa, Karaloğlu said the meeting would reinforce Bursa’s identity as a thermal city. Stressing that Bursa is the first and only city from Turkey to be chosen as a member of EHTTA, Karaloğlu said Bursa was welcomed into the association in March 2013 and became a member and policymaker of the Association’s Board in 2015. “Bursa is home to numerous hot springs and public baths inherited from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. With its modern thermal facilities, along with its 6,000-bed capacity, Bursa earns the title of being a thermal city, said Karaloğlu. He said that Turkey had been making a move in health tourism in the last couple of years and Bursa has made a breakthrough for being a health center

Three central districts-Nilüfer, Osmangazi and Yıldırım- were established in Bursa after it had Metropolitan status in 1987. Nilüfer, which was established on the western side of the city, was considered, as a mass construction area to meet the housing needs of Bursa. Nilüfer opened its arms to Bursa, which was developing through the west and considered as the “Bursa of the future” for this reason.

Mustafa Bozbey, Mayor of Nilüfer Municipality said that Gölyazı, being a conservation area, would upgrade its potential as prominent historic and tourism destination. Within the framework of a protocol, Gölyazı district of Bursa was declared as a conservation area. Gölyazı village is located on two peninsulas at the north of the lake Uluabat. There are 7 islands in the lake. The region is carrying the atmosphere and architectural features of from past to present. Gölyazı is also an ideal place for bird-watchers. In spring the most conspicuous birds are the storks who’re busily tidying up the ramshackle nests that perch on every telegraph pole while sparrows freeload in the twigs beneath them. Elsewhere the trees will be alive with the twittering of goldfinches, while swallows will be returning to mud-

built nests beneath the eaves. Later, pelicans will also arrive to join the cormorants and terns fishing in the lake. Rare pygmy cormorants also nest here amid the beds of reeds and white water lilies.
