Rommer opens up in abroad in healthcare tourism Established in 1994 as a rehabilitation center for rheumatism and physical therapy, Rommer signed a partnership agreement with an Arab company in Celik Palas Hotel. The cooperation will be repeated at other destinations as well. Traditional facilities of the hotel will be combined with modern equipment and procedures. An international call center is also to be established to serve the guests at their languages. Founder of the center Dr. Metin Yurdakos said his organization would extend its hand to other hospitals and centers in the region as they are serving foreign patients.

Details of the call center project We decided that it will be more efficient and less costly to serve in one center that operates 7/25 for the needs of patients treated in the hospitals, healthcare centers and thermal facilities in south Marmara region. The project is supported by he funds of regional development agency.

Soranus, new stop for prospective parents Dr. Serbulent Orhaner: “Our method for patient and egg preparation increases the chance of conceiving.” Established in 1998 in Bursa to serve in the gynecology and child bearing Soranus Test-Tube Baby Center offers up-to-date technology to parents who want to have siblings. The name of the center comes from Soranus of Ephesus, the early names in the gynecology and birth sciences who lived in Anatolia in the second century A.D. Dr. Serbulent Orhaner informed about his clinic.

The center will serve in five languages, including English, Arabic and Russian. Callers can get detailed information from the experts and persons that were directed to them by the operators who greet people in their languages.

What is specific for your center from other test-tube baby clinics? Why Celik Palas? This is the first modern thermal hotel in Bursa having historical thermal waters of the city and is part of Swiss Bell hotel chain. It hosted many prominent celebrities in the past and its structure was renovated recently. It contains Himalaya salt room and efficient healthcare staff. It heals problems related with allergy, breathing, stress, and fitness.

Other activities in healthcare tourism? We organized first kids parade for international handicapped people, supported by local partners. We offer treatment and accommodation services for patients coming for their hair loss, test-tube baby (extracorporeal insemination) and tooth problems. Physical therapy services are our basic line of business for years aiming the customers abroad.

We invest 900 thousand liras for the ventilation of the center that filtrates the air pumped into the building. Air quality is important for health establishments. Other equipment used in the processes are all updated. Besides, our method for preparing both patients and eggs for the operation has higher rates of conceiving. Patients that were not satisfied with others have been conceived in our clinic. The eggs and embryos are prepared by two different methods. One of them is called longer and the other is known as shorter protocols. Healthy women produce an egg each month, each period. If both spouses are healthy, the probability of conception is % 25, maximum. With an aim to increase the lower chance of conceiving we prepare more than one egg, mostly two, for our patients. When the time comes we used them. Having eggs that its chromosomes were halved for conception, they are ready to be fertilized.

What is the advantage of your method? During the period of growth of the egg, there should not be any changes in the hormones that reduce fertilization. We use the longer protocol with a small modification. Our laboratory is at higher standards and we employ more than one embryo expert. Because, the job is tedious and requires delicate operation. It is also important to replace the embryo in the womb without harming it. Quality control is a must. They are highly sensitive human cells, they are prone to any small changes in physical conditions, including the heath. It should be at 37 degrees of centigrade. If it is not, either higher or lower, the cell loses its life or began to decay. Metabolic events occur in human body. Cells that make our body are not stable. For example, proteins are made chain of amino acids and formed a 3 D structure. One side o the molecule does something and the other side is tied to another molecule. The heath tolerance of the cells is very limited. For this reasons, we continuously have checked and calibrated our equipment in the calibration centers having worldwide fame. The acidity of the serums is also important for successful operations.

Low back pain and treatment Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez, from Neurosurgery Clinic of Bursa Medical Park Hospital, specified that almost everybody suffers low back pain at any time of the life. He emphasized that low back pains are mostly characterized with mechanical aches resulting from daily rush and sprain/strain and added that medications and physiotherapy may help those pains.

faster regress” he added. Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez clarified the fact that full recovery may not be achieved in some conditions of the “Cauda Equina Syndrome” and he emphasized that irreversible complications, such as urinary incontinence or strength and/or sensory deficit, may be experienced, although correct surgery is successfully performed. Mr. Çekinmez concluded that the consideration is to make patient survive best possible quality life, while timing of the surgery is decided, and “the most common mistake in the lumbar hernia is to make the decision ‘there is hernia, and surgery is required’ or ‘there is no hernia and thus, surgery is not required’ solely based on evaluating radiological films on a negatoscope” he added and emphasized that a detail medical history should be first obtained and radiological studies should be evaluated in the light of the neurological examination.

He added that for low back pain actually secondary to the lumbar hernia, medications or physiotherapy may be insufficient and time lost secondary to insufficient time will negatively influence the outcome of the surgery. “Cauda Equina syndrome may result with paraplegia secondary to complete impingement of nerves originating from the spinal cord by the herniated disc” said Assoc. Prof. Melik Çekinmez, who underlined the importance of selecting best therapeutic option for each patient. Mr. Çekinmez explained that this pro-

cess is not only accompanied with strength and sensory deficit, but it may also lead to sexual dysfunction, fecal incontinence or urinary incontinence.

“Complaints of the patient should be listened and the neurological examination should be directed accordingly, and thus, the best possible method should be preferred” he said.

Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez specified that those conditions necessarily require operation and time lost secondary to insufficient physiotherapy or medication therapy will negatively influence the outcome of surgery, and he warned “the patient should be operated and the compression should be eliminated as soon as possible”. “Thus, nerve can recover and symptoms will clearly and

Emphasizing the necessity that a detailed evaluation is made to clear out whether there is strength, sensory and/or reflex deficit and the picture is globally considered along with the lumbar MRI, Assoc. Prof. Melih Çekinmez mentioned that the patient should be clearly informed about benefits and risks of the operation and a solution is preferred in this end.

Health tourism, a natural value in Bursa Today, health tourism has important share in tourism revenues of the several countries. It is a well-known fact that health tourism revenues of some developing countries are much more higher than their any other tourism incomes. Health tourism, which means to procure health care from another countries due to certain reasons, may also be a significant potential source of income in developing countries. Our country experienced some fundamental health problems that could not overcome in the past. However, in line with successful implementation of health care reform, health tourism has become a crucial item on the agenda. Those people who are unable to reach to medical services in their own countries divert their health demand to other countries. The duration and very long process of treatment is another reason for health tourism demand. When we look at our country in general and Bursa in particular, we can say that we are able to offer competitive health services and medical treatment in terms of quality and price. Health care is very expensive and not easily reachable in the world’s many most developed countries, It is known that an appointment, even for very simple operations can be given after several months. Our country has turned out to

be efficient in this regard. Native and foreign patients can benefit from quality health care in return for reasonable prices. Therefore, our country is preferred with a rapidly increasing demand of health care from abroad. The health services demand directed to our country arise mainly from the African countries and the Turkic Republics. Bursa, being renowned for its unique geographical position, natural beauties and climate, including its proximity to sea and Uludag, has turned out to be an ideal place for quality health services. Health services produced in Bursa are competitive in terms of price and quality, judged by the international standards. Bursa has been able to combine health services and tourism in an ideal way. So, Bursa attracts diverse range of tourists demanding health and medical services in recent years, with its modern and competent hospitals which comply with most up to date technology and know-how. We are convinced that Bursa’s successful performance in health tourism will increasingly continue and Bursa will be capital city of Turkey as far as health tourism is concerned. Our country and Bursa in particular provide good health care services to Muslim countries which we have common culture and religion. Therefore this fact is a pride and honor for Bursa.

Sadi Kurtulan, Mayor of Mustafakemalpaşa:

“A promising and prosperous future lie ahead for people living in our town” Mustafakemalpasa takes remarkable strides to become a brand-new town of the region. We are planning to integrate thermal waters of Tumbuldek with thermal and health tourism facilities of Bursa.

We have recently interviewed Sadi Kurtulan, Mayor of Mustafakemalpaşa. Sadi Kurtulan has focused on the riches of the region by underlining the fact that the region has been undergoing a structural transformation more than ever before. Excerpts:

Could you brief us on the basic characteristics of Mustafakemalpaşa? Being the largest one in terms of its total area, Mustafakemalpaşa is one of the most charming towns of Bursa. It is located between Bursa and Balıkesir. 60 percent of the total area of the town is covered with forests and the remaining 40 percent covered with the fertile plains. Mustafakemalpaşa is a town renowned with its natural beauty and riches. The economic activity of the region consists of various industries, food, tomato paste, and canned food factories, dairy products, animal husbandry, agriculture, agro-industry and mining particulary for coal, boron and marble.

We know that Tümbüldek thermal waters have taken significant strides to become an attraction center of the region. What would like to say about Tümbüldek as a center for health tourism? As known, healthy way of living is one of the basic needs of the people. Within this framework, we are planning to integrate thermal waters of Tümbüldek

with thermal and health tourism facilities of Bursa. We know the healing properties of thermal waters of Tümbüldek are enormous. Therefore, the region would serve as an ideal destination for health tourism. Apart from the thermal waters of Tümbüldek, the region coupled with Suuçtu Waterfall would offer an ideal tourism destination for its cycle lanes, paragliding, walking trails and other sport activities.

Suuçtu Waterfall has turned out to be one of the most striking natural beauties of region. Could you mention about that? Suuçtu Waterfall and the Nature Park have become incrasingly a focus of attention in recent years. We try to upgrade the infrastructural services of the region. Bursa’s Suuçtu Waterfall, 18 kilometers away from Mustafakemalpaşa, offers magnificent beauty that awaits photographers and nature lovers. Suuçtu Waterfall, which is a hidden treasure and offers a different beauty in every season. We want this place to be promoted to the world and host tourists from all around the world. The Waterfall, which is in a beech-tree forest is one of the most beautiful spots in Turkey. The area is a haven for nature aficionados, nature sports lovers and photographers, particularly during the fall. The

waterfall, is made up of the Karadere River which emerges from the Çataldağ and Kavalıyayla rivers and the merging of the side tributaries of these rivers. The rivers also meet the water needs of Mustafakemalpaşa and the 15 villages within the district. Mustafakemalpaşa district is 84 kilometers away from the provincial center of Bursa, while the waterfall is close to the area’s Muradiyesarnıç village. It was formed with the collapse of a fault line and also features a small lake that appears in winter. Suuçtu is a popular resort area to visit during the weekends. The area is known as an oxygen depot among the beech trees. Besides being a natural air-conditioning unit, the Suuçtu Waterfall also has natural walking routes and a trout production center. We presented a detailed restructuring and restoration project on Suuçtu Waterfall to The Union of Bursa Culture and Tourism Promotion. The Project was approved by the Union. The Waterfall was also registered as a brand by Turkish Patent Institute.

As known, Mustafakemalpaşa is also renowned for its traditional Kemalpaşa Dessert- Kemalpaşa Tatlısı, originally called Cheese Dessert-Peynir Tatlısı. What particular aspects of the dessert do you want to mention? We know that sweets and desserts have always been distinctive elements of Turkish cuisine. Even an old Turkish saying advises one to “eat sweet, speak in a sweet way”. Dairy desserts are extensively consumed due to their nutritive and delicious characteristics. Mustafakemalpaşa (cheese) dessert is a traditional dessert, prepared with sugar syrup, mainly consumed in western parts of Turkey. The dessert is made from fresh unsalted cheese (40-70%), semolina flour (40-50%), baking powder and eggs. The shelf life of the dessert could be prolonged by diversified baking and packing processes. Mustafakemalpaşa dessert is consumed after boiling in sugar syrup until desired softness. Mustafakemalpaşa dessert should have a bright and yellowish-brown color, convex shape, and an intensive fresh cheese flavour. It should not be broken, burned, or pale in color, and should have no undesired contaminants. Color is a key quality characteristic because of the visual impact at the point of sale. It should be noted that the dessert should be eaten in Mustafakemalpaşa in order to experience its delicious taste and flavour.

What are the major projects underway for Mustafakemalpaşa? People living in our town have always been enterprising and productive individuals, being active in industrial and agricultural sectors. Actually, the town hosts diverse range of industries such canned food and Turkey’s first and leading tomato paste factories, mining and marble companies, including meat, milk-based dairy products industries. We, as, Municipality of Mustafakemalpaşa, put emphasis on a series of new investments in order to regulate the flow of

motor vehicles traffic within the town. We cooperate with Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa to initiate a modern intercity coach terminal for Mustafakemalpaşa. We have also undertaken a series of public works for Tümbüldek thermal water facilities, Suuçtu Waterfall and the related Nature Park, including brook of Mustafakemalpaşa and its vicinity.

Finally, what would you like to add? What vision do you have for the future of the town? As I noted earlier, we are determined to restructure the infrastructural capacity of the town. After completion of our projects, the town would make its presence felt more than ever before. With our legendary dessert, Suuçtu Waterfall and world renowned marble, we will continue to convey our message for brand-new projects on tourism, trade and industry. We can say that a promising and prosperous future lie ahead for people living here.

Bursa invites Brazilian business people to invest in Bursa

Leaders gather and discuss the global agenda at Uludağ Economy Summit BURSA-The Uludağ Economic Summit, organized by Capital and Ekonomist magazines, was held in Uludağ located in the mountains to the northwest of Bursa. Themes of the summit include “tomorrow’s competitive sectors,” “the future of industry” and “Industry 4.0.” Mustafa Koç, a leading Turkish businessperson who lost his life recently after a heart attack at the age 52, was commemorated at the summit with the showing of a film about his life. The opening was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek, responsible for the economy, by economy bureaucrats and leading representatives from the Turkish business community. In his speech, Şimşek empha-

sized the need to increase the level of savings in Turkey. He recognized this as a major problem which needed to be rectified to improve the stability of the Turkish economy. “What we lack is savings. Really, in Turkey, savings are low. With

“As a matter of fact, at the essence of the interest rate debate today, lies this. In other words, if savings were adequate in Turkey, if capital markets were deeper, with this fiscal policy performance and with this reform agenda, Turkey’s risk premium in this global conjuncture and Turkey’s interest rates could be very low. The reason is that the global conjuncture, the fiscal policy and also the reform agenda call for this. What is our problem? We have too few savings”

“We should deepen the system, increase our savings…. Now our expectation is that our citizens should save a certain amount of resource for the future. Make a saving. We should introduce incentives [like] ‘save 100 Turkish Liras and we will give you 25 liras,” Şimşek said. At the summit, leaders’ global and social agendas, importance of being digital firms were discussed. Opportunities of African and Chinese markets were evaluated. During the summit, the question “what Turkey must do to have regional and global power?” were discussed. Several international and domestic business delegates as well as key political figures attended panel discussions during the twoday summit.

BURSA-Yunus Fatih Kadiroğlu, Deputy Governor of Bursa, hosted Paulo Roberto Caminha De Castilhos França, Chief Istanbul Consul of Brazil. Yunus Fatih Kadiroğlu and Paulo Roberto Caminha De Castilhos França exchanged views on the issues of mutual concern. Yunus Fatih Kadiroğlu Deputy Governor of Bursa, pointed out, “Brazil is Turkey’s first strategic partner in South America and its biggest trade partner in the region. In addition to the Turkish Embassy in Brazil. Turkey has a Consulate General in Sao Paulo. We invite Brasilian investors to invest in Bursa. Bursa offers a series of generous investment incentives for foreign investors. Eight political consultation meetings were held to this day and a High Level Consultation Mechanism (HLCM) at the level of Foreign Ministers was established in 2006.” In 2010, President Erdoğan, the then Prime Minister, paid an official visit to Brazil during which the “Action Plan for Strategic Partnership” was signed. Turkey’s 40 thousand caves becoming tourism and sport destinations BURSA-Turkey has more than 40,000 caves, while a small minority of these are currently open for tourism. Out of the 50 caves open for tourism, 31 are open to everyone, 12 are for those who bring their equipment with them and 7 are only for the professionals. In a recent workshop on caving held in Bursa, the past, present and future of the caves of the region were discussed in detail. Abdülkadir Karlık, Deputy Mayor of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality said, “Bursa has 63 caves of the country. Our infrastructural works are underway for restoration of Ayvaini Cave, one of the longest caves of Turkey. When completed, Ayvaini Cave would become one of the most attractive caves of Turkey from the standpoint of tourism and sport activities. Emre Baturay Altınok, Chairman, Caving Federation of Turkey said, “ This workshop has been instrumental to focus on the problems of caving.” Atilla Ülgen, Chairman, Association for Caving, said, “Bursa offers diverse range of opportunities for caving tourism and sport activities.”

During the workshop held in Bursa, the following items dominated the agenda: Caving — also traditionally known as spelunking and potholing is the recreational pastime of exploring wild (generally non-commercial) cave systems. Caving is often undertaken for the enjoyment of the outdoor activity or for physical exercise, as well as original exploration, similar to mountaineering or diving. Physical or biological science is also an important goal for some cavers, while others are engaged in cave photography. Virgin cave systems comprise some of the last unexplored regions on Earth and much effort is put into trying to locate, enter and survey them. In well-explored regions (such as most developed nations), the most accessible caves have already been explored, and gaining access to new caves often requires cave digging or cave diving. Caving, in certain areas, has also been utilized as a form of eco and adventure tourism. Tour companies have established an industry leading and guiding tours into and through caves. Depending on the type of cave and the type of tour, the experience could be adventure-based or ecological-based. Caving has also been described as an “individualist’s team sport” by some, as cavers can often make a trip without direct physical assistance from others but will generally go in a group for companionship or to provide emergency help if needed. Some consider the assistance cavers give each other as a typical team sport activity. Too much emphasis on the labeling of caving as a sport can narrow the goals of caving as a whole. Caving often puts the needs and welfare of a cave before those of the active participants. It is fair to say that while caving shares some attributes of sport activities, for many it transcends sports as many cavers pursue cave science, mapping, photography, and the management and conservation of cave resources.

between the two countries was further reinforced with the joint declaration titled “Turkey-Brazil: A Strategic Perspective for Dynamic Partnership” during President Dilma Rousseff’s visit to Turkey in 2011. In 2015, Turkey-Brazil bilateral trade volume was about 2.25 billion US Dollars, which amounts to a 10% decline compared to the previous year. Paulo Roberto Caminha De Castilhos França. Chief Istanbul Consul of Brazil said, “Brazilian economy is the world’s ninth-largest by nominal GDP and seventh-largest by GDP as of 2015. A member of the BRICS group, Brazil until 2010 had one of the world’s fastest growing major economies, with its economic reforms giving the country new international recognition and influence. We think that Turkey and Brasil could cooperate on various fields. Bursa has turned out to be a fertile ground for foreign investors. Brasilian and Turkish people have some common characteristics such as their hospitality and enterprising nature.”

MIPIM HIGHLIGHTS NEW INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

BURSA makes its presence felt at MIPIM once more The 27th edition of MIPIM Real Estate Fair saw real estate executives and investors expressing a mixture of optimism and caution over the state of the global market, while there are variations by territory and asset sector, the overall picture for 2016 is positive. Following last year’s MIPIM theme of ‘Digital Revolution,’ MIPIM 2016 boosted its focus on innovation in real estate and launched the first Startup Competition devoted to real estate tech and sponsored by BNP Paribas Real Estate. MIPIM is the world’s property market held in Cannes, in March. MIPIM brings together the most influential players from all international property sectors, offering unrivalled access to the greatest number of development projects and sources of capital worldwide. This unique environment provides exceptional networking, showcasing and commercial opportunities for property advisors, developers, regional authorities, investors and corporate end-users. Fatma Güldemet Sarı, Turkish Minister of Environment and Urbanization visited MIPIM and the stand of Bursa organized by Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa and Bursa Governorship. Bayram Vardar, Deputy Secretary General of Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa welcomed Fatma Güldemet Sarı, Turkish Minister of Environment and Urbanization at MIPIM and briefed information on present and future of the real estate sector of Bursa. Bayram Vardar said that a bright future lied ahed for Bursa from the standpoint of far reaching urbanization works. During the event, Fatma Güldemet Sarı, Turkish Minister of Environment and Urbanization delivered a speech on “City Brands and Real Estate Industry of Turkey” by emphasizing the fact that Turkey offers

a series of challenging opportunities as far as real estate sector of the country is concerned. Bringing together the largest single gathering of international investors (over 4,800), alongside developers, end-users, architects, hotel groups, public authorities, tech specialists, startups and property associations, MIPIM underlined its credentials as a unique opportunity to conduct business, network and discuss the major issues facing both urban and real estate leaders. MIPIM 2016 attendance rose 10% compared to 2015, as some 23,500 senior real estate executives, urban leaders and politicians from around 90 countries met in Cannes at the world’s leading real estate conference, networking and deal-making event. With the United Nations reporting that over 50% of the world’s population now lives in cities and annual urban growth running at 1.83%, there is an increasing need for concerted urban strategies that will help cities handle the situation. To facilitate discussion on new urban policy, MIPIM chose ‘Housing the World’ as its central theme and the subject of the annual Mayors’ Think Tank Summit. The Mayors’ Think Tank welcomed some 100 city leaders for high-level discussions. Mayors expressed their desire for the real estate industry to share its vision of cities that produce liveable spaces for all and particularly to work together with public partners to provide affordable housing. “With a shortage of residential housing in many of Europe’s urban centres, there is a need for increased collaboration between public and private players in

all phases of urban development, from planning to delivery of urban assets. Architects have a central role to play in future urban development and with just under 2,000 here in Cannes, their numbers continue to grow at MIPIM,” added Rean. It was clear in Cannes that international real estate investors are diversifying their portfolios to include such ‘alternative’ investments as healthcare, student housing, hotels, residential rental and retirement homes. Among the asset classes that substantially increased their ‘footprint’ in the MIPIM halls this year, Healthcare, Logistics and Hotel & Tourism came together in an enlarged pavilion and the 1,800m² Innovation Forum showcased the latest tech projects and companies offering solutions and practices to increase the value of property assets. The explosion of e-commerce is accelerating the emergence of what were once described rather dismissively as ‘sheds.’ These have become one of the hottest assets in real estate as demand for logistics grows and warehouse returns have been out-performing some office portfolios since the recession. As MIPIM progressed, the traditional flood of real estate market research and surveys began to circulate. At the closed-door MIPIM RE-Invest Summit – which brought together 53 institutional investors representing over €500 billion in property investment – Real Capital Analytics reported that commercial property transactions in 2015 totaled $1.3 trillion, up 5% on 2014.

BURSA-Mustafa Dündar Mayor of Osmangazi Municipality of Bursa said, “We organized a series of events on the occasion of Commemoration of Osman Ghazi and the Conquest of Bursa. This year indicates the 12rd commemoration of the Conquest of Bursa by Osmangazi Municipality. Mustafa Dündar said, “Bursa was under the sovereignty of Byzantine between 385-1326 A.D. Founder of the Ottoman Beylik was Osman Bey, who was born in the town of Söğüt in 1258. In 1299 he conquered Bilecik, Yenikent, İnegöl and İznik, and this is the year regarded as the founding of the Ottoman Empire, which was to survive for over six hundred years. As Osman Gazi gained in strength, the Byzantine governor of Bursa Atranos sought assistance from the governors of Kestel and Kite. Their united army joined battle against the Ottomans at Koyunhisar in 1301. Bursa was seized by Osman Bey and conquered by Orhan Bey, the son of Osman Bey, on 6 April 1335. The capital of the empire was moved to Bursa in 1335 and new development movements were initiated.”

When Bursa was conquered, the city consisted of the inner castle, but Orhan Gazi had the Orhan Gazi Complex built out of the town. Public buildings such as mosques, baths, soup houses, hospitals, madrasahs were built out of the walls, where new settlements had been established, hence a new tradition of settling area had been established.” He added, “Bursa had developed more than other cities in the first two centuries of Ottomans. Dr. Abdullah Damar, Deputy Director of Bursa Tourism and Culture said, “We are here to display the riches and potential of Bursa. During the Fair, cities compete with each other. Bursa has turned out to be highly competitive in terms of its tourism capacity and assets.” During the Fair, Dr. Abdullah Damar exchanged views with the visitors on Bursa and he presented candied chestnuts of Bursa to the visitors as a gift. The event has as objective to allow the opportunity for the different tourist and travel organizations introduce their activities and services, offer investment opportunities in tourism sector. Bursa has become popular for healthcare, culture and spa tourism in recent years, thanks to greater promotion and investments.

These developments also led to major changes of the tourist profile visiting the city. While the city’s tourism catered mostly to European tourists in the past, now people from a variety of countries from the Middle East to the Far East choose Bursa as a holiday destination. A group of these countries is the Arab states, as the number of Arab tourists has sharply in-

creased, especially in the last 10 years. Bursa relies most in its thermal potential regarding health tourism. Apart from its hot springs, historical and natural beauties that provided its touristic character, countless healing water springs are scattered around its center and neighboring provinces, attracting tourists in all 4 seasons.

environment from single building scale to a citywide scale underlies sustainable development. Urban transformation practices are implemented in the world and in Turkey in line with these objectives. To ensure sustainable development, it is vital to determine the needs and expectations in different areas of the urban space and different segments of society and which tools to be employed in meeting these needs. Quality of life research is used as a tool for implementing sustainable practices that rely on policies based on scientific data in the fields of urban transformation and planning and design of housing areas” Recep Altepe, Mayor, Metropolitan Municipality of Bursa noted “ “Within the context of humans’ interaction with their housing and environment, examining the housing and determining user evaluations and preferences will enable making

Having the first flights to Bursa from Kuwait started, Perpax expands its connections to other countries. Transporting tourists from 16 countries, the company promotes Bursa in tourism fairs held in abroad. General manager Turabi Aydin informed about his company and views on tourism industry in Bursa.

What kind of services are you offering to your customers? Perpax is an important player in Bursa attracting visitors from the Middle East. Having offices in Istanbul and Trabzon as well, we carry tourists and offer them all services related to their trips. We assumed services including visa, ticket sales as an agent of Ido and Budo, organize corporate meetings, transfer from airport and offer A to Z services. Employing 25 people we have 6 vehicles to serve flawlessly to our guests. We aimed hundred percent customer satisfaction.

What do you do for Bursa in its promotion in the world? It is our priority. I have personally been introducing Bursa the fairs held in abroad for 18 years. Our company is five years

designs shaped according to local sensitivities and determining spatial needs and qualities of housing that are suited to life values. It will also contribute to developing alternative solutions which are proper in terms of quality and quantity within user-housing and user-environment relationships and which ensure sustainable development and quality of life in a new housing production process. It is necessary to assess housing quality to determine whether it is suitable for the users’ family and cultural norms.”

old. We are the first company that started flights from Kuwait to Bursa. We would have started flights from Saudi Arabia, if the turmoil in the region were settled. We are developing new services for nature and health tourisms.

In your opinion, what needs to be done for Bursa in terms of tourism? People from Arab countries are the most who came to Bursa for holiday. We have to be more efficient in this regard. We have to cooperate with governorship and municipality to attract more people like the Germans and Dutch do. We have to be more active. We have good facilities for congresses, but there are some deficits. The fact that sellers can speak foreign languages is an important point in our business. They began to learn Arabic instead of English. Companies and establishments act individually, however, we need more cooperation among us. We should act harmoniously in our efforts to promote Bursa. We know that our peers in Blacksea region have surpassed us in their promotional efforts.

Hüseyin Özdilek said, “Orange City would be an exemplary project under the motto “Life exists here” with its green area of 5,000 squre meters, social facilities for children and adults, indoor swimming pool and fitness centers. Orange City, which will include 9 blocks and 116 flats (2+1,3+1 and 4+1) is also marked with its earthquake resistant structural design.” Ozdilek firstly started to manufacture towel and bathrobes, a present from Bursa to world, in 1971 with 10 tons of capacity a year with 2 weaving looms and 5 personnel. Together with the modern and fully integrated paint-printing facilities, Özdilek began to produce other home textile products and today is the biggest and 6th towel producer in Turkey, Europe and in the world respectively with 10.000 towels and 40 tons thread production a year. First steps of Bursa Shopping Center were initiated in 1983 with a 400 m2 factory outlet and cafeteria on Yalova road. In the aftermath, shopping centers in Afyonkarahisar, Kocaeli, İzmir, Geçit (Bursa), Yalova, Antalya and Eskişehir and Özdilek center covering hotel and business centers, and hypermarkets in Bursa Kaplıkaya, Bursa Ataevler, Bursa İnegöl, Bursa Gemlik, Bursa Özlüce and Bursa Gürsu were opened. Özdilek still continues to grow with the home textile stores all around Turkey. Today it serves to 55 million guests a year with 15 shopping centers and hypermarkets, 3 department stores and 40 home textiles. In 2003,

What do you have to say about the fair in Dubai? We the people in tourism business are happy and energetic people. So, we spend much in our efforts. We spent 90 thousand TL for Dubai Fair. We want to bring more visitors from abroad. We are telling people that this country is safe for foreigners, and terror is a global problem that can be seen in every corner of the world. Bursa is safe for everybody.

What kind of feedbacks you get from your guests recently, as a tourism company? The major handicap of Bursa is it’s being a famous destination for Arab countries. They are demanding new places and destinations from us. They ask about locations such as Canakkale, Edremit, Kusadasi, Izmir and others. After Russians are gone from Antalya, the hotels in Antalya aimed to Arab tourists. Supply of services are huge in these regions. This year one million of tourists are expected instead of five million of the past. Bursa has its own potential for attracting loyal customers, because, its air, water, tranquility and peace are valuable.
