The "Centro de Treino Mar" nautical club host s the second edition of the "Madeira Sup Chal lenge" a meeting for stand up paddleboard (SUP) athle tes, a sports event to be held from March,10 th to 12th. The official programme involves a 21 km route entitled “Around the corner” held between the villages of Porto Moniz and Paul do Mar, and also a workshop. Natural beauty, unpolluted environment. “Traços de Madeira” Museu Etnográfico da Madeira  Until 12 May

The marchetery art is one of those arts, by means of using the different endemic types of wood available. This exhibition, englobes pieces of furniture with marchetery work, going back to the 19th and 20th centuries. The author of the wood marchetery was Mr Eduardo Pereira, a disciple of Mr Manuel Gaspar, who in turn, had, in 1893, introduced, in the old Comercial and Industrial School of Funchal, a speciality course in marchetery. --------------------------------------

Created in 2010, “The Stars Route” is seen as one of the most important high quality gastronomic festivals that take place in Portugal. Hundreds of national and foreign chefs are awarded with the famous Michelin Guide stars. Il Gallo d’Oro restaurant and The Cliff Bay hotel (2 Michelin stars) kick off the 9th Stars Route hosted by Chef Benoît Sinthon.  www.rotadasestrelas.com Criado em 2010, a "Rota das Estrelas" identifica-se como um dos mais importantes festivais de alta gastronomia, que acontecem em Portugal envolvendo, desde essa data mais de meia centena de chefes nacionais e estrangeiros galardoados com as famosas estrelas do Guia Michelin. Camacha, Funchal  23 March - 1 April In collaboration with the Camacha Experimental Theatre (TEC), Camacha's Casa do Povo will organize another edition of the “AMO-TEatro” Festival. This festival is part of the 9th edition of Madeira's Theatre Showcase. The Festival includes the participation of three regional, four national and two international theatre companies namely “TEF”, the group “Teatro Amador de Pombal”, and “Craq´Otchod", among others. 5 Reduce salt and sugar intake

For good health, we need more than 40 different nutrients, and no single food can supply them all. It is not about a single meal, it is about a balanced food choice over time that will make a difference!

A high salt intake can result in high blood pressure, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. There are different ways to reduce salt: -When shopping, we could choose products with lower sodium content. -When cooking, salt can be substituted with spices, increasing the variety of flavours and tastes. -When eating, it helps not to have salt at the table, or at least not to add salt before tasting. Sugar provides sweetness and an attractive taste, but sugary foods and drinks are a rich in energy, and are best enjoyed in moderation, as an occasional treat. We could use fruits instead, even to sweeten our foods and drinks.

2 Base your diet on plenty of foods rich in carbohydrates About half the calories in our diet should come from foods rich in carbohydrates, such as cereals, rice, pasta, potatoes, and bread. It is a good idea to include at least one of these at every meal. Wholegrain foods, like wholegrain bread, pasta, and cereals, will increase our fibre intake.

3 Replace saturated with unsaturated fat Fats are important for good health and proper functioning of the body. However, too much of it can negatively affect our weight and cardiovascular health. This route begins at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lombada, Ponta do Sol. Before starting the walk you will find the beautiful Solar dos Esmeraldos, which functions as a school, and the old windmill that rendered its name to the levada.

In the beginning of this route, the cultivated agricultural lands and the fantastic panoramic landscapes of the valley and the village of Ponta do Sol immediately stand out. Delight yourself with the sights, the endemic flora and fauna and waterfalls. At the end of the route you can climb the path that provides access to Levada Nova. Once there, follow the opposite direction until you reach the imposing cascade of this

levada. It is without a doubt a fascinating sight that deserves some moments of contemplation before continuing. On the way back, where the levada surpasses Ribeiro Frio, on its right bank there is an area where you can snack while taking in the stunning nature. When you begin to look at the farmland again, you will know that you are nearing the end. Do not miss the

opportunity to visit the monument in honor of the Levadas stonemasons placed in front of the church. About 9 km of pure peace and pleasure is what you will experience on this journey. It is important to take into account the fact that there are several areas with abyss and no protection, so it is not recommended for inexperienced hikers.

O Turdus merula cabrerae é uma subespécie endémica da Macaronésia com uma população superior a 10000 indivíduos.

Descrição A subespécie nominal T. m. merula tem 23,5– 29 cm de comprimento, uma envergadura de 34–38 cm e um peso de 80-125 g, dependendo do sexo e das estações do ano. Apresentam um dimorfismo sexual acentuado. Os machos apresentam o corpo totalmente negro e o bico amarelo vivo, enquanto que as fêmeas têm uma coloração mais parda e o bico acastanhado.

Description The Turdus merula cabrerae has a Medium-sized thrush with short bill and short legs. The male is uniformly black with a yellow beak and eye ring while the body of the female is brownish, with small, lighter-coloured specks on the breast and with dark bill. The common blackbird is 24 to 29 centimetres in length, weighs 80–110 grams and has a wingspan of 34-38cm. The Blackbird of Madeira and Porto Santo differs from its congener by being darker and smaller, and as it is also found in the Canary Islands it is therefore an endemic subspecies of Macaronesia. Habitat The habitat of the Blackbird ranges from forest to urban areas, and includes farm lands, gardens and high-altitude vegetation. The only type of habitat where this species does not occur is in areas of no vegetation. This species spends most of the time on the ground near cover, feeding. Its flight is usually low and quick, swooping into cover. Breeding On a grass and mud cup base with twigs as structure, built low in vegetation, 3 to 5 eggs are generally laid on each of up to 4 broods between March and August, though the season varies with altitude, as breeding occurs later at higher altitudes. Diet Feeds on worms, insects and invertebrates of all kind in the ground and on berries and fruits in bushes. In culture The common blackbird was seen as a sacred though destructive bird in Classical Greek folklore, and was said to die if it consumed pomegranate. Like many other small birds, it has in the past been trapped in rural areas at its night roosts as an easily available addition to the diet, and in medieval times the conceit of placing live birds under a pie crust just before serving may have been the origin of the familiar nursery rhyme:

Clethra arborea, commonly known as the lily-of-the-valley-tree, is a flowering plant in the genus Clethra. It is found in Macaronesia where it is native to Madeira, extinct in the Canary Islands, and considered an introduced species in the Azores. In Madeira its natural habitat is laurisilva forest. Description It is an evergreen narrowly upright shrub or small tree, growing to about 6 m tall and 4 m wide. The foliage is dense and glossy, with the leaves up to 7–10 cm long. Folhado, Folhadeiro Clethra arborea Aiton, conhecida pelos nomes comuns de folhado ou folhadeiro, é uma planta com distribuição natural restrita à ilha da Madeira. A espécie é considerada extinta nas Canárias e foi introduzida na ilha de São Miguel (Açores). Características É uma pequena árvore perenifólia, que chega aos 10 metros de altura, com tronco recoberto por um ritidoma liso, castanho ou acinzentado. As folhas são oblanceoladas a obovadas, acuminadas, com até 20 centímetros de comprimento, serradas, glabras na página superior e pubescentes na inferior. O pecíolo é curto, avermelhado e pubescente. As flores são de cor branca, bastante aromáticas, com 1 a 2 centímetros de diâmetro, pendentes, dispostas em numerosos cachos simples ou ramosos, erectos. A floração ocorre entre Agosto e Outubro. Distribuição A espécie é presente na ilha da Madeira, sendo um componente principal da Laurissilva. Extinta nas Canarias, é possível que existia também em otras ilhas da Macaronésia. A sua população é muito dispersa nas regiões altas; é também cultivada em jardins, sendo conhecida, pelas suas flores, como arvore dos lírios do vale. Usos A madeira desta árvore foi utilizada em embutidos, carpintaria, marcenaria, utensílios domésticos e para lenha. Os caules eram utilizados na Madeira para a feitura de bordões, cabos para ferramentas agrícolas e varas para pesca.

Max - The Fado Singer Maximiano de Sousa, commonly known as Max, was one of the most popular fado singers from the 1940s until well after his death in 1980. Max was born in Funchal on January 20,1918. It was here where his career started. He was a tailor, and even after becoming an artist, he long maintained that profession. In 1936 he began working at night in a hotel bar in Funchal as a singer and continued to work as a tailor during the day. In 1942 he was one of the founders of the Toni Amaral Band, where he was a singer and drummer. In 1946 he joined his band mates on a trip to Lisbon where they were contracted to perform at the famous Cabaret “Nina”. He began singing Fado in 1948; his first hit was “Não digas mal dela” with music and lyrics by Armandinho and Linhares Barbosa respectively. The success of this song was so great that he began a solo career, which quickly became a success. In 1949 he recorded his first album for “Valentim de Carvalho”, containing two songs that became his final springboard to stardom, “Noites da Madeira” and “Bailinho da Madeira”. It was the first of many hits that would follow such as: “A mula da cooperativa” – “Porto Santo” – “31” –

“Sinal da Cruz” and many more. In 1952 he began a brilliant career as an actor, at the invitation of Eugénio Salvador he participated in a piece called “Saias Curtas”, the performance pleased and he later went on to play a role in many other pieces. In 1957 he left for the United States where he remained for two years, afterwards he begins another tour of Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina. After the huge success of this tour he returned to Portugal, and launched a new track with equaled success, “Pomba Branca”. Apart from being a singer, Max became a very unique distinguished composer, many of his hits where his own compositions, but it’s worth noting his partnership with Artur Ribeiro in works like, “Vielas de Alfama”, “Noite”, “Rosinha dos Limões”, etc… This great singer, composer, author and musician unfortunately left us in 1980. Maximiano de Sousa nasceu a 20 de Janeiro de 1918, no Funchal. Estreando-se em 1927 na " Praia Oriental " no Funchal, local onde também actuava, à data, a fadista Maria do Carmo Torres, Max, nome artístico pelo qual ficaria célebre, manteve-se activo, como profissional até ao ano de 1980. Com apenas dezanove anos de idade exercia a profissão de alfaiate mas o ofício nunca o afastou das cantigas. Em 1944 profissionalizou-se e, dois anos mais tarde, viajou para Lisboa como vocalista do conjunto de Tony Amaral. Autor de músicas de grande sucesso como Pomba Branca, Sinal da Cruz e Porto Santo, entre outras, Max distinguiu-se também pela sua interpretação de fados numa expressão muito própria, mesmo inconfundível, dando voz a fados de Lisboa e Coimbra. Em 1944 actuou na inauguração do restaurante - dancing Flamingo onde permaneceu durante uma época. Dois anos mais tarde, como vocalista e baterista do conjunto de Tony Amaral actuou no Club Americano e no night-club Nina onde se manteve durante dois anos. Apoiado pelo empresário Fred, a sua projecção artística só viria a verificar-se quando participou nos espectáculos da APA, no Cinema Éden. Em 1949, assina contrato com a Valentim de Carvalho e grava o seu primeiro disco: um 78 rotações com Noites da Madeira e Bailinho da Madeira. A partir de então, cantou de norte a sul do País em espectáculos que o tornaram popular com a interpretação de canções humorísticas como A Mula da Cooperativa e o Magala 31, ou de carácter mais folclórico como o Bailinho da Madeira, boleros, entre outras. Actuou na Emissora Nacional e noutras estações emissoras, gravou discos, participou em várias revistas como " Saias curtas " (1953), " Fonte Luminosa " (1956), " Elas são o espectáculo " (1963), " Pão, pão… queijo, queijo… " (1967), " Grande poeta é o Zé " (1968) e " Peço a palavra " (1969), e no filme" Bonança & Cª " (1969). Mas não foi apenas no humor que Max se evidenciou. Cantou e dançou folclore, imitou vozes e instrumentos e escreveu e imortalizou Vielas de Alfama, com Artur Ribeiro, Nem às Paredes Confesso, com Artur Ribeiro e Ferrer Trindade, Fiz Leilão de Mim, com Artur Ribeiro e Lamentos, com Domingues Gonçalves Costa. Cumprindo várias digressões ao estrangeiro estrangeiro, Max particpou nos Estados Unidos num programa de Ed Sullivan na NBC, actuando em clubes de Hollywood e de Nova Iorque, no Brasil, Argentina, Venezuela, Espanha, Alemanha, África do Sul e Austrália. O último programa de televisão em que participou foi no " Zip-Zip ", em 1969. Em 1979, foi homenageado pelo Governo Regional da Madeira vindo a falecer em 1980. Em 1991 foi inaugurado um busto em sua homenagem, da autoria da escultora Luíza Clode, junto ao Largo do Corpo Santo.

The Parade On Saturday night, the colourful and vibrant float parade takes thousands of visitors and residents to the Center of Funchal. This is the main attraction of Madeira Carnival. Over a thousand revellers participate dressed in eye-catching costumes in addition to a dozen exquisitely decorated floats. The parade is opened with music: the colourful joy and the rhythm of the costumed troupes are contagious. They parade enthusiastically to the sound of selected songs that were choreographed and rehearsed throughout the year, overflowing the public with their joy. The Slapstick Parade The “Trapalhão” Parade (slapstick parade), held on Shrove Tuesday, represents the spontaneous parade that originally occurred on Rua da Carreira. Participation is open to all, both national and foreign citizens, either independently or as a group. The participants’ creativity knows no boundaries and spans from social and political satire, to traditional themes, or simple character disguise. The Godparents’ Feast The Carnival celebrations begin with “Festa dos Compadres” (Compadres Feast), which takes place in Santana. The nature of this traditional festivity is part of passage from winter to spring ritual and the renewal of the local community. The action unfolds in a clear antagonism between male and female local residents, well represented through the satirical male and female dolls made by the participants. The feast focuses on the judgement of the "compadre" and the judgement of the "comadre", during which social criticism is done towards the events and activities of individuals and community institutions that took place over the year. In the end, both the “compadre" and the "comadre" are burned as punishment. This way, the community feels renewed and social tensions are relieved, prepared to begin a new cycle in spring.

Street Events On Wednesday, before Shrove Tuesday, downtown Funchal, in particular the central walkway at Avenida Arriaga, is captivated by the magic of Carnival, which becomes the center of numerous street entertainment events, including carnival music, performances and countless events that contribute to rousing the spirit of revelry in tourists and locals. Arriaga, deixa-se contagiar pela magia do carnaval, e torna-se o centro de inúmeras iniciativas de animação de rua. Festas Temáticas As unidades de diversão noturna oferecem, também durante o tempo que antecede o Carnaval, diversas noites temáticas, como a "Noite dos Hippies" e a "Noite dos Travestis", convidando os seus utentes a divertirem-se disfarçados com uma máscara alusiva ao tema. Carnaval das Crianças Durante este período, as crianças e os seus pais empenham-se em confecionar máscaras para levarem para a escola. Na manhã de sexta-feira que antecede o dia de Carnaval, cerca de um milhar de pequenos foliões provenientes de diversas escolas e creches do Funchal, desfilam, disfarçados, pelo centro da cidade (Avenida Arriaga), num ambiente de animação carnavalesca. Carnaval Solidário Na tarde da sexta-feira anterior ao Carnaval, a baixa da cidade é novamente brindada com mais uma iniciativa de animação que prima pela originalidade e criatividade. Com uma energia contagiante, centenas de foliões da Associação de Desenvolvimento Comunitário do Funchal desfilam pela Avenida Arriaga até ao Jardim Municipal, onde se realiza um espetáculo.

A história da Escora de Samba "Os Cariocas" remonta a Fevereiro de 1980, quando um grupo, sob a designação de "Sambistas", participou pela primeira vez no Carnaval da Madeira. Terreiro da Luta

O Terreiro da Luta é um imponente monumento, que foi construído em 1927, a cerca de 8 km do Funchal, em honra da Nossa Senhora da Paz. À noite, quando iluminado, pode ser visto a partir da cidade. Segundo a lenda, em 1916, quando vários submarinos alemães afundaram os navios e começaram a bombardear o Funchal, para evitar que a ilha fosse usada como uma base de aliados, foram feitas orações à Virgem, após as quais os ataques cessaram. Actualmente, as grandes correntes que cercam este monumento provêm das âncoras dos navios dos aliados, afundados no porto. Próximo ao monumento está a estação terminal do comboio que ligava o Funchal ao Norte. A linha férrea foi fechada em 1939, após um acidente. Hoje, o que antes era o terminal ferroviário, é hoje um bar-restaurante, com um terraço de onde se pode deliciar com a linda vista sobre a baía do Funchal.

Terreiro da Luta is located north of Monte (Funchal) and the area was once the last stop on the only cog railway (Monte Railway) in Madeira. It is also where the Our Lady of Peace sanctuary (Nossa Senhora da Paz) is located. Between 1893 and 1943, the area was connected to Funchal by Madeira's only cog railway. The Our Lady of Peace sanctuary (Nossa Senhora da Paz) statue which is supported by 4 roman columns, is located here. It was built after the attacks on Madeira during World War I, which were first felt in Madeira on December 3, 1916 when the German U-boat, U-38, captained by Max Valentiner went into Funchal harbour on Madeira and torpedoed and sank 3 ships, CS Dacia (1,856 tons), SS Kanguroo (2,493 tons) and Surprise (680 tons). The commander of the French Gunboat Surprise and 34 of her crew (7 Portuguese) died in the attack. The Dacia, a British cable laying vessel, had previously undertaken war work off the coast of Casablanca and Dakar, was in the process of diverting the South American cable into Brest, France. Following the attack on the ships, the Germans proceeded to bombard Funchal for two hours from a range of about 2 miles (3 km). Madeiran cannon artillery returned fire and eventually forced the Germans to withdraw. On December 12, 1917, two German U-boats, U-156 and U-157 (captained by Max Valentiner) again bombarded Funchal, Madeira. This time the attack lasted around 30 minutes. Forty, 4.7 inch and 5.9 inch shells were fired. There were 3 fatalities and 17 wounded. In addition, a number of houses and Santa Clara church were hit. A priest, José Marques Jardim, promised in 1917 to build a monument should peace ever return to Madeira. In 1927 at Terreiro da Luta he built a statue of Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of Peace) commemorating the end of World War I. It incorporates the anchor chains from the sunken ships from Madeira on December 3, 1916 and is over 5 metres tall.

Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiveror mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and sometimes a pen or pencil. The geocacher signs the log with their established code name and dates it, in order to prove that they found the cache. After signing the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it. Larger containers such as plastic storage containers (Tupperware or similar) or ammunition boxes can also contain items for trading, such as toys or trinkets, usually of more sentimental worth than financial. Geocaching shares many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, letterboxing, and waymarking. Geocaching was originally similar to the 160-yearold game letterboxing, which uses clues and references to landmarks embedded in stories. Geocaching was conceived shortly after the removal of Selective Availability from the Global Positioning System on May 2, 2000, because the improved accuracy of the system allowed for a

small container to be specifically placed and located. The first documented placement of a GPS-located cache took place on May 3, 2000, by Dave Ulmer of Beavercreek, Oregon. For the traditional geocache, a geocacher will place a waterproof container containing a log book (with pen or pencil) and trade items or trackables, then record the cache's coordinates. These coordinates, along with other details of the location, are posted on a listing site (see list of some sites below). Other geocachers obtain the coordinates from that listing site and seek out the cache using their handheld GPS receivers. The finding geocachers record their exploits in the logbook and online, but then must return the cache to the same coordinates so that other geocachers may find it. Geocachers are free to take objects (except the logbook, pencil, or stamp) from the cache in exchange for leaving something of similar or higher value. For treasure hunting fans, geocaching in Madeira is almost a dream come true. All you need for this activity is a GPS or a Smartphone to go in search of the "geocaches" on the Madeira archipelago. Há pessoas que deixam vários objetos, para que as seguintes os possam trocar por outros. E há também sempre a possibilidade de encontrar uma geocoin ou um travel bug. Assim, encontrar uma cache torna-se uma verdadeira caça ao tesouro. Seja para enfrentar fobias ou conhecer espaços novos, o Geocaching tornou-se um vício para os praticantes. São já muitos milhões pelo mundo e dezenas de milhares em Portugal. O que une? O gosto pela aventura e pela descoberta de novos tesouros. Há caixinhas que vêm com enigmas, outras têm como objetivo a limpeza do local e há até mesmo grandes eventos, assinalados no mapa, com mais de cinco mil participantes. Têm vários tamanhos e formas e sempre com um tesouro por descobrir.

The Convent of Santa Clara

Part of the Santa Clara Convent, this beautiful church has architectural and artistic elements from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Preserved from the original building are the Gothic portal in marble of two archivolts and the tomb of Martim Mendes Vasconcelos, who died in 1493. Noteworthy are the 17th century silver tabernacle, wrought in 1671 by Madeiran goldsmiths, the decorative painting of the church and the coating with polychrome rug patterns.

The walls of the Santa Clara Convent separate the world from one of the oldest religious orders in Madeira. This convent was founded in 1496 by João Gonçalves de Câmara, Zarco’s (discoverer of the island) grandchild. Dona Isabella, Zarco's granddaughter, was its first Abbess. She established an aristocratic tradition which ensured the wealth of the convent. After her, many wealthy families’ daughters were forced to take "vows" when they were of age. It was such vows that supposedly provided spiritual benefits to them and their families. The Convent of Santa Clara was rebuilt in the seventeenth century over the foundation of a fifteenth century chapel, where the remains of the first three governors of Madeira are believed to be buried. It includes a courtyard and a chapel, which exhibits an array of spectacular paintings, sculptures and tiles.

In 1566, French pirates under the command of Bertrand Montluc pillaged the city of Funchal for fourteen days. The nuns had to abandon the Convent and took refuge in Curral das Freiras, or Nuns' Valley, taking with them a "monstrance", which in Roman Catholicism refers to an open or transparent receptacle adorned with precious stones in which the consecrated Host is displayed for veneration. Towards the end of the sixteenth century there were about seventy nuns. By the seventeenth century that number rose to one hundred and thirty. In 1896, the state handed the Convent over to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, which opened its doors for worship, as well as to shelter the poor. Nowadays, the nuns run a kindergarten. It is possible to book guided tours to visit the convent, The Convent of Santa Clara is classified as a National Monument.

Convento Construído entre 1489 e 1496, este belíssimo convento apresenta nas suas paredes azulejos do séc. XVII, tetos em madeira e em azulejos de estilo hispano-árabe e uma coleção de telas restauradas dos sécs.XVII e XVIII. O Convento de Santa Clara foi mandado edificar em finais do século XVI, pelo segundo capitãodonatário da Ilha da Madeira, João Gonçalves da Câmara, nas imediações da residência de seu pai, com o fim de recolher as filhas da nobreza local. O conjunto de edifícios do Convento de Santa Clara constitui um valioso património, pelo recheio que possui e, principalmente, por ainda nos nossos dias apresentar a mesma missão para a qual foi construído: um Convento de Religiosas Franciscanas. No Convento podemos visitar: o Átrio, a Capela de São Gonçalo de Amarante, possivelmente edificada no século XVI, o Alpendre de acesso aos Coros e Claustro, o Coro de Baixo e o Coro de Cima, num belo panorama para o interior da Igreja de Santa Clara.

Igreja Integrada no Convento de Santa Clara, esta belíssima igreja apresenta elementos artísticos e arquitetónicos dos séculos XV, XVI e XVII. Datada do século XV, a igreja de Santa Clara foi mandada edificar por João Gonçalves Zarco, descobridor da Madeira e primeiro Capitão Donatário do Funchal. No final do mesmo século foi ampliada para integrar o Convento de Santa Clara e por isso ganhou elementos artísticos e arquitetónicos dos séculos XV, XVI e XVII. Da primitiva construção preservou-se o portal gótico em mármore de duas arquivoltas e o túmulo de Martim Mendes Vasconcelos, falecido em 1493. Do século XVII destaca-se o sacrário de prata, executado por ourives madeirenses em 1671, a pintura decorativa da igreja e o revestimento parietal com padrões de tapete policromos.
