CONTENTS Welcome Apart from MADE, my other favourite magazine is RED - I get a little flutter of excitement when it falls through my letter box every month; and I love how the contributors’ ‘best things in life’ always focus around family, food and fresh air. They would love the family scene around here! As well as Jupiter Artland re-opening for its summer season in May and Port Edgar’s open weekend on May 12th & 13th; we now have the amazing Wildhood Festival happening in June. This brand new magical, adventure-led festival is designed just for kids and is filled with all things creative. If that’s not enough ‘best things’ then turn to pages 36 - 40 and go on a selfcatering adventure around the rest of Scotland.

Mum’s New World
Written by Kirsty Nicholls, www.sweetpea.media
I
visited my sister last week and I was treated to lots of cuddles with my beautiful four-month-old niece. I was quite taken with a new playmat they had recently bought. (A sentence I never thought I’d write.) It has a little piano at the end, for kicking feet to play. Ingenious. My sister revealed that within two hours of ordering it online, it was on her doorstep. The power of the Fast Track Delivery Service. On the face of it, this sounds brilliant. But then as our conversation continued, we uncovered a deeply uncomfortable truth. There’s a conspiracy that’s targeting sleep-deprived new mums: 2.30am too-goodto-be-true, can’t-live-without-it online shopping opportunities. I’ve written before about my slight obsession with buying vintage skirts on eBay. That I often stay up too late, scrolling relentlessly through pages of tat on my phone. Even when it’s getting toward midnight though, I’m still of sound mind enough to recognise what I should (or should not) be buying. But add another three hours onto that, an incomplete sleep cycle and suckling newborn, then anything goes. made MAY / JUN 2018
My memories of nights with my two as tiny babies are a haze of cosy breastfeeding, the (very loud) beep of the Perfect Prep formula machine, comatose breast pumping, crazy dreams about misplacing babies amongst bed sheets and lots of Facebook scrolling. Then those sneaky adverts started to appear, tempting my addled brain into buying stuff I definitely didn’t need. If Facebook helps advertisers to target us based on our posts, comments and likes, then what on earth have I been doing? My feed is full of harem pants and friendship bracelets. With this array of wares, my zombified online shopping sprees are fairly low risk. Not so though, for an unfortunate friend of my sister’s. So tired was she one fateful night, that she accidentally purchased not one set of nursery furniture, but three. Two from eBay and one off Gumtree. She and her husband awoke to the glorious news that two full bedroom suites would be arriving that week, and the third needed collecting from Norwich. Delivery is now so speedy, that items arrive before you’ve even remembered buying
them. I’ve had parcels arrive from China containing random ‘free + p&p’ items that I’ve had to hide under the bed while I trawl through my Paypal statement to check that I was actually mad enough to buy them. It’s incredible what the brain does when it’s tired. Sleep deprivation has been used as a form of torture, because it renders victims vulnerable to persuasion. This was proved one day, when a friend arrived to meet me at a play cafe without her purse. As she came to pay for a packet of Pom-Bears, she realised in horror that she’d left it on her bedside table, having joined two conflicting political parties after a red-eye ‘The Guardian’ binge. I can only draw one conclusion from this: I won’t be having any more babies, because my bank balance simply wouldn’t cope. n

his program is for you if you want to start exercising and get into better shape but don’t know where to start. If you haven’t exercised for a long time, and you don’t feel comfortable joining a fitness club or hiring a personal trainer yet, jump on board!
Only a couple of minutes each day The program is easy. You only need a couple of minutes each day. You will learn basic exercises - good technique is key. This allows you to stay safe, and make faster progress later, reaping all the benefits. Then, very slowly and gradually, the exercises get put together into mini-workouts to challenge your muscles and heart.
Feel bet ter about your self and your body This program is not about revolution and we don’t promise it will massively change your life. But if you stay with us, we promise you will feel much better about yourself and your body. You will have a little more energy and suddenly daily tasks will become a little bit easier. made MAY / JUN 2018
Then you might even consider joining a fitness club, gym or sign up for the dance lessons? Who knows? It happens all the time – so why not to you too? Although it’s not our main goal, your body composition will start changing too. Slowly and surely you will burn fat and tone up.
How does it work? There are six basics exercises which you will learn in the first days. Then they combine into little workouts. Print out the planner, hang it on the fridge and follow it. You can also join our online version of the program where you will find the videos and healthy eating tips. fitnesssoul. co.uk/28-day-free-fitness-challenge/

trust JoJo You can always trust comedian JoJo Sutherland for her interesting childcare advice! For more laughs follow her @jojosutherland and go to www.jojosutherland.co.uk to keep up-to-date with her Edinburgh gigs.
I have been travelling a lot with gigs recently, and various projects have taken up so much of my time that I had enormous guilt about neglecting my brood, so I took some time away from work and concentrated on having “family time”. It also felt like a good opportunity to catch up with some friends that I hadn’t seen for a while. One friend in particular seemed to be having a stressful time so I volunteered to take her two little ones to stay with us for a couple of days, with the idea that my lot could help look after and entertain them. Only to find that my children have become incredibly self sufficient and had made plans of their own, which involved them hardly being at home! So I found myself run ragged with a pair of under fives and an all but empty house…. I’m going back to work for a rest!

Dear Jojo My child keeps coming into our bed at night. I don’t really mind but my husband is getting annoyed. Caroline, Meadowbank Dear Caroline There is something quite lovely about having a small person snuggled up and sleeping with you but they do get bigger and you will get annoyed soon enough! Try not to let the habit form as it is much harder to break. But if you feel that your child needs that closeness then pop them back into their own bed and stay with them for a while. They will soon grow out of it.

UNVEILING THE MAGIC AND PASSION BEHIND
Newborn
Photography
Z
sofi Molnar, owner and photographer at Edinburgh’s Studio Life Photography has been photographing newborns, babies and children for 12 years. She has trained with some of the best newborn photographers in the world and she is also a mum who understands just how meaningful those first images of your precious new baby become over the years. Zsofi loves her job and often has to pinch herself when thinking how lucky and privileged she is to be able to capture these magical moments for newborn parents. Here, Zsofi shares some of the secrets behind how she works her magic in her purpose built Corstorphine-based studio which clients describe as a ‘home from home’.

WHEN DO YOU NEED TO BOOK YOUR NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION? At Studio Life, we recommend booking your photo session at least 2-4 months in advance of your due date. Baby will arrive when they are ready and for this reason our newborn diary is flexible to accommodate their little schedule. As soon as baby arrives, just call us to confirm your session date, ideally up to 2 weeks after birth. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE SESSION? Once we have you booked in we will email you a newborn guide which covers everything from how to prepare, what happens at the photo session and what to bring. We will also chat on the phone and discuss everything closer to your

due date. But don’t worry, the most important thing is that you arrive relaxed and enjoy every minute. HOW LONG DOES A NEWBORN SESSION TAKE? Newborn photography, at its best, is about taking the time to put everyone at ease and create an environment to capture the most stunning images. We set aside four hours for your session, although we allocate extra time just in case as the session is entirely baby led, allowing baby time to feed, cuddle and have nappy changes. WHAT PROPS ARE USED AND WHO PROVIDES THEM? Studio Life has lots of carefully sourced hats, head bands and blankets which we use to surround your little one in while capturing them sleeping. Zsofi is fully trained in handling and safely posing newborn babies. DO PARENTS NEED TO BE INVOLVED DURING THE SESSION? Zsofi is lucky enough to have a natural affinity with babies and an ability to put them at ease so mum and dad can sit back and relax while watching your baby being carefully photographed. Our studio temperature is set just right for baby’s comfort and safety. Parents say they are often surprised how quickly their baby settles with Zsofi, even the nonsleepers! WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOUR NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION? Zsofi will invite you back to our studio to preview your images, normally around one to two weeks later. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? The session fee is £65 and includes Zsofi’s time, talent and editing time. This does not include digital files or prints. Zsofi will guide you with your final selection of images. Most of our clients invest between £250 and £750 on their newborn photography, including digital images, loose prints, fine art framed prints or photo book albums. n

Father’s Day F
ather’s Day. A day to honour fathers (and father figures). A day where men throughout the UK unwrap gifts over a breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and fresh coffee, having enjoyed a long lie in bed. Gifts of socks, ties, sweaters and slippers unwrapped. Mostly unwanted. Mostly selected by children and therefore featuring a cartoon character or some other gaudy design. Gifts of gardening tools. Equally unwanted. Gifts of whisky (or other forms of alcohol). Totally wanted. I had always assumed that the concept of Father’s Day was established in America by corporate consumer goods giants desperate to create another cash cow during the calendar year. My wife vehemently subscribes to this notion (whilst wholeheartedly embracing the time-honoured tradition of Mother’s Day) meaning that she is free not to engage with the day as a statement of defiance against its materialistic beginnings. My wife makes the claim that Father’s Day was never celebrated in her household

in her childhood. And her father didn’t mind. In fact, he pro-actively disagreed with the concept. Thereby she is following the ritual of her childhood and making the noncelebration of Father’s Day a tradition in itself. The Father’s Day that we celebrate in the UK has indeed travelled from the US and is a relatively modern concept. Some attribute the origins of the day to Grace Golden Clayton, from West Virginia. A mine explosion in a nearby town resulted in the tragic deaths of 360 men and in 1908 Grace proposed that the town needed a day to remember the fathers who had been killed. Others attribute the occasion to Sonora Dodd, a lady brought up with her siblings by her father, after her mother had died during childbirth. She is reported to have listened to a Mother’s Days sermon in 1910 and concluded that her own father deserved the same recognition. Whilst the above are widely acknowledged as driving Father’s Day in the US and UK, some evidence supports a ‘father’s day’ in some shape or

form in Europe since the Middle Ages. Just not celebrated with a crass card and some cheap tat from Amazon. (Maybe a crass drawing by quill pen on parchment and a wood carving). Anyway, my Father’s Day will be spent the same as every other Sunday. Desperately hunting for a small hidden corner in the house where I can escape for five minutes to read The Sunday Times in peace, instead of being asked to participate in an impromptu rendition of Frozen’s ‘Let it go’, accompanied by rattles, ukuleles, and drums (all bought as gifts, clearly by those with now adult children trying to get their own back). Thinking about it, I haven’t tried the cupboard under the stairs yet. That might work. With a head torch. n
Michael Atkinson is a dad to two young sons, but occasionally finds the time to write on golf, whisky, fatherhood and politics.
