client vision

Seeing life through the eyes of a child has always been something that Mr. Jones has been inspired by listening to the Alice in Wonderland trilogy ignited this inspiration. It is something special when someone can visually share the lessons they have learned and their favorite components of their favorite story. The peculiarity of the Mad Hatter, the curiosity of Alice, and the bold descriptions of Wonderland all come together to allow people of all backgrounds to see the world in a different light for a weekend or a  stay or even, hopefully, a lifetime.

hotel concept

The Liddell centers its concept around the idea of escapism Defined as being “the tendency to seek relief from reality”, escapism is experienced in many personal ways. Whether it be through leisure, fantasy, isolation, or pleasure, The Liddell accommodates all who come.

The Liddell serves as a vessel for escapism. Encapsulating moments of contentment, freezing them in time in a place far removed from reality. Drawing inspiration from the beloved Lewis Carroll series Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, this boutique hotel reflects the peculiar storyline, rich character profiles, and imaginative settings as a driving force behind the design of the interior spaces. Wholly unique, The Liddell transports guests to a surrealistic place, both physically and in their minds.

The Liddell is situated in the beautiful and historic Warehouse and Arts district of New Orleans, Louisiana. The proximity to the numerous points of interest makes this location prime for walking.

Andy

Age: 34 Sophia

While in the Crescent City on business, Andy is eagerly anticipating his stay at The Liddell. Hoping to find both a quiet area to conduct important work, as well as a more casual spot to conduct simple business, he is likely to stay at the hotel most of the day and night. All work and no play would make for a forgettable stay, so Andy will be making wise use of the hotel’s bustling café lounge and adjacent conferencing room

Age: 25 Michael Age: 41

In hopes of having one last trip as a single woman, Sophia and her Maid of Honor are looking forward to staying at The Liddell. They are longing to have a relaxing stay that allows not only for some social interaction, but also tranquil alone time. A full day of pampering that includes massages, manicures, and champagne, is exactly what these two friends will find at the hotel’s salon and spa

In charge of planning his brother’s birthday getaway, Michael is excited about their stay at The Liddell. They are hoping to let loose and have some classic Big Easy fun. By making full use of the rooftop bar, private lounge, and outdoor games, the boys will make sure to make this trip one for the books.

Zoe

Age: 53

Zoe, her husband, and their three young children are eagerly awaiting their stay at The Liddell. She is seeking to have a leisure-based vacation that is stress-free and family-friendly. The hotel’s in-house restaurant and bar will provide the parents with the relaxed nightlife they desire, while the children are engaged by the tableside games and exciting atmosphere

The lobby is an intersection between outdoors, reality, and indoors. The spaces serves as a rabbit hole into the fantastical spaces within a mixture of classical and traditional architectural details that harken back to the time 1865, when the novel was published. Juxtaposed with a look of sleek timelessness while reflecting the peculiarity of the novel’s characters, this space serves as a gathering point where the various spaces collide.

“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”

Influenced by the Mad Hatter’s characteristics, the in-house restaurant, 10/6, offers each guest the opportunity to get in touch with his eccentric inner self Whimsical material patterns and expressive art overlay to serve as a foundation for serving culinary delicacies and cocktails. With opportunities for board game play, informal conversation, and witty banter, 10/6 invites guests to the lively table of the Mad Hatter.

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t.“

Inspired by daydreaming and the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, White Glove Tea Room offers guests a perfect place to be imaginative and come up with some of their best ideas. The whimsical combination of finishes and refreshing colors provides a playful, rejuvenating space perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up.

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast”

Apropos to Alice’s whimsical and curious character, Bird & Bloom (Salon & Spa) promotes serene solitude by providing an outlet for users to escape to a world of their own Shades of blue and elevated architectural details enhance elegance while also paying homage to Alice’s simplified beauty

“All the flowers would have very extra special powers, they would sit and talk to me for hours, when I’m lonely in a world of my own. There’d be new birds... everyone would have a dozen bluebirds, within that world of my own.”

26 the liddell
wellness room perspective

In reflectance of the overall idea of imagination, the guest rooms at The Liddell allow guests to escape through imagination Rich, dark tones and bold graphics transport guests into a world of fantasy. Custom wall detailing and built-in storage provide a sense of comfort for guests. Much like Alice was transported down the rabbit hole to a world that was not her own, the guest rooms at The Liddell encourage a journey into imagination and inspiration

“Imagination is the only weapon in the world against reality”

bird’s eye perspective

28 the liddell

The Residences at The Liddell are inspired by the timeless elegance of the illustrations found in the original book “Alice Through the Looking Glass”. The elements found in the space enhance the alternate realities that minds can create when reading a book. Neutral tones along with traditional architectural details provide better social competence while also offering a “blank canvas” for occupants to express themselves

“And what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversation?”

bedroom perspective

30
the liddell

In reflection of the Queen of Hearts, the enigmatic monarch and antagonist in the novel, guests are encouraged to get in-touch with their guilty pleasures at Duchess Rooftop Lounge. Whether endulging for a moment or settling in for a time, the rooftop carves out a labyrinth of spaces, much like a hedge maze with its passages and destinations, in which guests can lose track of time. Spaces meant for community will provide guests the opportunity to let loose. Along the journey, more intimate nooks comfortably envelope guests, encouraging the slow passage of time. Contrasting tones of red and black weave throughout the spaces, battling for dominance in “a blind fury”.

brand vision

Branding must reflect the concept by reminding viewers of the smooth ripples water creates. Reflecting the central motif, the branding represents the smooth connection between departments to represent how NEXT, as a company, is encouraged to flow. Encouraging inclusion among all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds, the branding is simple and sleek, to apply to all NEXTERS

product mockup

Boston is known as the “hub of the universe” for many reasons, but mainly because it is humanity driven throughout the city. With the Bostonians and visitors in mind, the city is ripe with gathering places that encourage well-being and connectedness. One such gathering place is the Boston Common, the first public park in America. Echoed throughout the design of next is the ripple effects seen in these still lagoons, flowing continually outward when propagated, causing a chain reaction from the starting point onward

The design for next is based on the unique, ever-changing, and organically formed ripple effect that is created in water. Often a response to contact with another element, the ripples have a firm central foundation and distribute outward, with each ripple being individualized, but collectively forming a cohesive response. Similarly, the design for the new next office will serve as the foundation for employees, the central core of the causal sequence, where employees have individuality and flexibility in workflow, together or apart, formal or informal, all which celebrate human differences, such as ethnicity, range of abilities, culture, gender, and generational overlays.

the vision

brand vision

Caelum Residences of Austin, Texas is inspired by the solar transitions which directly correlate with the three main goals of this assisted living facility: connection, healing, and restoration. The dawn spaces, which center on the connection the residents will make within Caelum, will heavily feature warm wood materials and neutral tones to act as a link between the day and night spaces. The day areas will include bright blue-green paint tones, which highlight the healing purposes these spaces are designed for, balanced by the cool grey and tan upholstery materials. Finally, the darker hues and more lush materials used in the night areas will promote the restoration the residents seek after they complete a full solar rotation.

healing restoration connection

Although the elderly can heal most wounds, they have a slower healing process, and all phases of wound healing are affected. The inflammatory response is decreased or delayed, as is the proliferative response.

Introduction to modern technology, new friends/ community, and private bathing are efforts for restoration in elders. The three each establishes movements of independence in a senior citizens' life.

Loneliness and isolation introduce many health care problems for aging adults. Engaged in a community provides positive connections to and promote overall impaired health.

DAWN DAY NIGHT CONNECTION HEALING RESTORATION

As night meets day, dawn is the arbiter of their connection. Filled with the possibility of newness, the serenity of dawn is curiosity and hope as the luxury of night turns to the day.

A new day offers the opportunity for fresh beginnings and a journey toward healing. When people think of “daytime” it is synonymous with reaching goals and optimizing the given hours.

While the finality of the night means the completion of another day, it also represents the chance to indulge in relaxation and begin restoration for whatever comes next.

AURA

Color theory is defined as “a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual effects of a specific color combination”. This piece of furniture, known as “Aura” is a physical representation of color theory and the effect that color can have on human well-being. Additionally, being that color and interior design go hand in hand, paint becomes a large part of the equation. “Aura” utilizes paint stirs and paint swatches to emphasize this idea in combination with color theory. These stirs and swatches play a large role in formulating and selecting colors in interior design, becoming an integral part of the design process.
