THE FEARLESS FACTORY Ben Gilles, Maeve McCarthy and Neesha Reddivari
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? The field of manufacturing has developed a bad reputation over time. People think of manufacturing jobs as the repetitive linework jobs that they used to be. But, the field has changed drastically and now offers a wide range of opportunities for all people.
HOW MIGHT WE... -put manufacturing in a positive light? -create awareness about the industry? -reach out to the community? -change peoples perceptions of the industry?
Students don’t want to go to vocational schools to learn the necessary skills to obtain a job in manufacturing.
Layman have preconceived notions about manufacturing and don’t think it is an honorable field to work in.
Company Leaders have job openings but can’t find the workers with the appropriate skills to fill them.
Workers are not aware of open jobs for skilled workers in manufacturing.
WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? To create an environment comprised of a group of movable and expandable pieces that can be rearranged and interchanged in order to create a unique experience for each user. Each exhibit is created to customize a learning opportunity for everyone. This innovative method of education will promote the field of manufacturing and initiate change in the industry.
Students will interact with the process of production and will see what it is like to work in the field of manufacturing.
Layman will walk away with new perceptions of the field of manufacturing and an understanding of all it entails.
Company Leaders will learn about different aspects of manufacturing that would help them refine their own processes.
Workers can contribute their ideas about the future of manufacturing, learn skills to fill jobs and discuss how to improve the field.
The solution is a new product... ZIB: /zib/ noun 1. unfolding installation 2. display; stemming from the word exhibit
FEARLESS FACTORY: / feer-lis fak-tuh-ree/ noun 1. an assembly of unfolded Zibs. 2. space that creates an experience surrounding manufacturing

1
ZIBs are ordered for a Fearless Factory in a specific location
2
Content is customized for specific users at the fearless factory
3
ZIBs are sent out to their final installation location
4
Fearless Factory is unfolded and open for users to experience
5
ZIBs fold up and go back to home base in West Chester, Ohio.
Zibs can be sent to any location using four primary means of transportation. Once a location is determined, a Zib can be shipped via land, air, rail or sea.
HOW ARE THEY TRANSPORTED? Zibs can be sent to any location using four primary means of transportation. Once a location is determined, the staff can choose to ship the Zibs via land, air, rail or sea. The zibs themselves fold together, making it easier to handle, transport and ship. This idea came from the idea of a shipping containers and their size.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF ZIBS?
PROCESS PORTAL
-A combination of pictures, videos, simulated construction and assembly explain the process of making something from start to finish in depth. -The process that is displayed can be customized based on the company that is sponsoring the Zib and their target audience.
HOLOGRAPHIC ASSEMBLY LINE
-A working factory within a Zib that uses virtual reality to create something and then 3D prints it into a tangible product. -Users are given the opportunity to create something and take their creation home with them.
Students can see how something is made from start to finish.
Students can see a fun, interesting and high technology side of manufacturing.
Workers can learn new methods of making and be trained for skilled worker positions.
Professionals can learn a new process without using any raw materials. Companies can test the assembly of a new product in a digital form.
Companies can let people see practices of their business that are typically kept behind closed doors. Layman can learn more about traditional manufacturing.
PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT
-Gives users the opportunity to interact with and discuss products that they learned about in the Fearless Factory. -People can share ideas about improving manufacturing. -Users can contribute ideas about improvement of specific products. Students can be exposed to a part of manufacturing that is off of the assembly line.
Layman can make something themselves and then take it home as a souviner.
SIMULATION WORK ENVIRONMENT
-Shows people what it is like to work in the field of manufacturing at any level. -Juxtaposes working conditions in the past and present and projects what they could be like in the future to highlight changes in the field of manufacturing over time. Students can be made aware of available manufacturing jobs that might suit them.
Workers can discuss how things are made and how that process can be made more efficient.
Professionals can also contribute their ideas to the future of manufacturing and engage in discussion about how to make these ideas reality.
Companies can use this as a focus group and are given great brand exposure.
Companies can be fully immersed in the past and get a sense for what their industry would have been like in previous years.
