CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

Welcome to the 2022 annual report and AGM. We continue to stand in awe of our God who is our ever-present help

The highlight again for the year has been the encouraging uptake in recruitment MAF has been blessed by more high calibre kiwis obeying the call of God on their lives to serve in different parts of the globe. They have been sent with the strong support of their churches and individuals who commit to pray with us for them. Ministry partnership between supporters and staff continues to grow overall.

Renovations of the new Kendon Strong MAF Centre were completed in 2022 with thanks to the many who gave to this development. A special thanks to MMM and those volunteers who completed countless hours building and painting. The end result is stunning. We continue to pray for the further development of programmes in the Centre that will support and encourage people on their journey to serve with MAF.

Thank you to our dedicated team of staff. We farewelled Tim from communications. Thanks Tim for the many, many great stories and testimony to God’s work through MAF. We welcomed Abigail Vincent to the team. Abi always provides a welcoming arrival at the office and keeps the prayer needs of serving kiwis ever before us, amongst all her other duties.

3

As we look to the years ahead, the board and Mark are contemplating how we may further grow the ministry of MAF in New Zealand In particular, major re-developments and capital projects in PNG planned in the coming years will also require significant funds. PNG is a place close to our hearts and has been the genesis of MAF activity in NZ and Australia. To see the work of MAF in PNG beginning to flourish again is encouraging, and for MAF NZ to be able to stand with MAF in PNG as they build for the future will be an honour Building our fundraising capability for this project, and projects in the many other places that MAF serves, is a key objective for us this year.

A big thanks to each of you who prayed, gave and served with MAF this year, for the lives impacted with God’s love and redeeming message of forgiveness and hope.

Covid restrictions may have again limited, or re-directed our activities for the year, yet through it all God has demonstrated his power, love and care for us and proven to us again that apart from Him we can do nothing. His power has been made perfect in our weakness. As Solomon prayed at the dedication of the temple “The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. ” 1 Kings 8:27

CEO'S REPORT

Isaiah 30:23,25

“Then the Lord will bless you with rain at planting time. There will be wonderful harvests and plenty of pastureland for your livestock.

In that day, when your enemies are slaughtered and the towers fall, there will be streams of water flowing down every mountain and hill.”

As one year finishes and another one begins, I have been pondering how the Lord might lead us this year. The task before us seems huge at times and feelings of inadequacy and the lack of inspiration and clarity creep in. But then the Lord encourages us with promises of wonderful harvests and plentifulness. It is like the streams of the river of life are following down the mountain to provide the resources we need

For those who have renovated your house will understand some of the issues we faced in 2022 The renovation of the new MAF Centre at Tauranga airport certainly did dominate our workflow. However, through the Lord’s grace, we have completed the building work and now our focus shifts My prayer is that as we have now built the barn, we can fill it.

Many people have been involved with the renovation of the KendonStrong MAF Centre, both paid and voluntary. Special thanks to our project manager Richard Burne and our builder, Paul Hofsteede. Thanks

5

also goes to MMM (Mobile Mission Maintenance) for their partnership with us on this project Their team was led by Richard Crawford from Te Puke, who also brought onboard Curate Cares from Curate Church. Of course, in addition to this were many others who came and helped for maybe one day to a few weeks This was particularly the case for our painters.

Renovations were complete and furniture moved in before Christmas, and the office team were able to spend the month of December in the new facility before we broke up for the Christmas holidays. The building dedication and opening took place on 2 April 2023 where a huge crowd came together to celebrate and to thank the Lord for his provision. A special thanks to both the Kendon and Strong families for their partnership with this project, for allowing us to use their family name.

Russell and Philippa McLachlan gave 2022 as a year to serve in Mt Hagen, Papua New Guinea, where Philippa was the Principal of Mt Hagen Grammar School. In early October, during an aerial medical evacuation, Russell went to be with the Lord following a heart attack. Several people travelled to Wanaka to represent MAF at his funeral. During 2022 we have been able to relaunch our event programme following the hiatus from the COVID pandemic.

The value of the Foundation at the end of the year is $411,639. One scholarship was granted during 2022 to Renée Brewer who spent time in our Cessna 206, ZK-MAF building currency in preparation for her departure for MAF service. It is the goal of the Board and the West family to raise the value of the Foundation to over one million dollars. We are looking for partners to help provide a lasting legacy to help pilots be prepared for MAF’s service.

2023 sees a strategy to grow the local organisation now that the building development is complete. There is considerable need within the MAF International ministry for more pilots, aircraft engineers and managers Along with this, is the need for funding for the ongoing work

6

of MAF across the world, including the redevelopment and updating of various aspects of the plant in PNG MAF NZ has an obligation to increase its resourcing for MAF International ministry, to do this, we need to grow. Without growth we would be unable to achieve any further resources apart from our current levels It is our goal to build capacity within MAF NZ so that we can fulfil our obligations to the MAF International family.

During 2023 there are a number of encouraging new opportunities including an Intern from Eastwest College, to grow our youth ministry here in NZ. We have also made application to the Manaaki Fund (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade), on behalf of MAFI and Timor-Leste, to support a project ministering to those who are affected through domestic violence. If we are successful, this will require significant input, as we support this flying programme.

Philippa and I would like to thank the MAF family for the support you gave us, especially through prayer, during Philippa’s cancer journey. Philippa has made a full recovery and your prayers have been answered, so thank you!

We encourage everyone to come and visit us at the MAF Centre at 7 De Havilland Way, Tauranga Airport. We are open for business and are keen to meet with you and show you the wonderful things that God is doing through MAF ministry.

OUR VISION OUR MISSION

Serving together to bring help, hope and healing through aviation.

KENDON-STRONG MAF CENTRE

It has been a two-year journey, since January 2021, to establish the new Kendon-Strong MAF Centre at Tauranga Airport

Until the renovations began in August 2022, the office functioned from the top floor of the Centre but during the renovation, staff needed to work primarily from home.

As mentioned in the CEO’s report, I am very grateful for the voluntary help provided by MMM to help get the renovation completed in a timely manner. Due to current building regulations the project was significantly bigger than first anticipated especially in regard to fire protection and ventilation. I was more involved in project management than I had anticipated, to ensure the project was completed in good time If you have been to visit the Centre then I am sure you will agree with me, that what we have ended up with is quite significant and skillfully done. This facility will provide for us for many years to come.

9

I praise the Lord for His provision of finance to both purchase the property and complete the renovation Thanks also goes to all who volunteered and gave of many hours of free service to ensure we were completed.

The hangar provides not only for our Cessna 206 aircraft but for three other airplanes that yield rent which pays for the lease on the land and insurance on the building

Part of the vision of the Centre was to be “ open for business” so that people could come and visit us to see and hear the MAF story. Already in the two years that the Centre has been open, we have had several visiting individuals and groups. This includes the Boys and Girls Rally, a youth group from Auckland and local and out-of-town Life Groups. We have also made the facility available for aviation industry people to use the boardroom for meetings. We already have had several MAF families on home assignment stay in the apartment and those doing training. In particular the whole hangar space was used in January 2023 for the HEAT Course (Hostile Environment Awareness Training).

We invite anyone to bring your group to visit the Centre, to view the MAF airplane, view a MAF video and hear the MAF story. We love the opportunity of sharing and engaging with you.

The aircraft continues to be used for pilot assessment and promotional activities. William Nicol is our Chief Pilot. The aircraft is also hired out to Waikato Aviation and Tauranga Aero Club, which enables revenue generation

Colin McIntosh has taken over maintenance control of ZK-MAF with maintenance being carried out by Solo Wings at Tauranga Airport A special thank you to Leo Hume who was, for several years, our Chief Engineer. Leo has now handed over those reins, but always keenly holds the vision of MAF

FLYING FOR LIFE CHARITABLE TRUST

The Flying for Life Trust has worked in the background to support MAF International through directing donations received to projects around the World through a number of relief projects.

The trust board has met and approved funds with the following distributed during the year:

MAF South Sudan Relief and Development Flights (43%)

Timor Leste Medevacs (17%)

Kenya Relief and Development Flying (25%)

Each of the projects were selected by MAF International inconsideration of our criteria.

The remaining 15% of additional funds were raised via special appeals for the Guinea Programme and Jerry Can Fuel appeal which have also been channelled via the trust. FFLT trustees know each of these MAF projects will bring needed relief in a practical way Details on these projects are provided by MAF International to the FFLT and are available from the MAF office if desired.

We greatly appreciate all those who have continued to give generously to the international work of MAF and the various projects that bring tangible results to the lives of many people

As always, a huge thank you to Mark and the MAF office staff who oversee and complete the financial processes necessary for operating the trust accounts. I add my thanks to the other trustees Jim and Lawrence for their time and expertise. The accounts were presented for Review and Audit and were again successfully completed by Audit Integrity Ltd for the 2022 period.

MAF NZ 2022 FINANCE REPORT

Despite a contracting economy and rising inflation, the MAF NZ financial accounts, once again, reflect the amazing generosity of our faithful supporters and goodness of our awesome God.

A small deficit of $3,413 is shown for the year ended 31 December 2022. All the major construction work for the renovation of the KendonStrong MAF Centre was completed by the end of the year. We are happy to report that the cost came within budget parameters. A big thank you to our volunteers and MMM (Men’s Mobile Mission) who made this possible

The financial statements have been audited and given a clean and unqualified audit opinion

Income/Distributions

Donations are channeled through two entities – MAF NZ for work within NZ, such as recruitment, advertising and training of staff in preparation for mission; and Flying for Life Charitable Trust (FFL) for approved overseas projects The 2022 project distributions have included: aviation fuel through the Jerry Can appeal, medevacs in Timor-Leste, medical and health flying in South Sudan, relief and development flying in South Sudan and Kenya, and special appeals for the newly operational Guinea programme and Timor-Leste’s Closing the Loop initiative.

Expenditure

Total expenses of $869k were 10% more than 2021. Staff salaries were reviewed and adjusted as per the Strategic Pay not for profit report recommendations
