GOVERNMENT HEEDS THE IPIA’S CALL FOR ENGAGEMENT

Following its recent meeting with Special Advisors to the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at No10 Downing Street, the Government has delivered on a key strategic support request from the IPIA.

IPIA Chair, Charles Rogers, was invited to attend an event hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister, MP Oliver Dowden, to represent the UK print industry at a special Business Leaders Reception at No10. The invitation forms part of a proactive response from Government to the IPIA’s formal request for the, “Identification of UK print and paper as ‘industries of strategic value’ to our economy.”

Charles comments: “It’s hugely encouraging for our industry that I was invited to attend an event designed to foster collaboration between different sectors of the economy - demonstrating that print and paper is now firmly on the Government’s radar.

“The call for proactive engagement from Government with the sector at our previous meeting

aware of the UK’s place as a global leader when it comes to innovation in printing processes and the production of print. He is also aware of its strategic importance to the multi-national technology developers and media suppliers at the core of its supply chain.”

ADVOCATING FOR THE INDUSTRY

Charles reports that the event was well attended by established business leaders and entrepreneurs from banking, healthcare, IT, construction, hospitality, and many other key industries.

Charles continues: “Our goal at the event was to impress on other guests the importance of print and paper to the UK economy and the health of its society, which was well received. One attendee told me they regularly bought print products online, and following our conversation, would be expanding his interests in this area. He also encouraged other

discussion on how we can work together to collectively grow the UK economy. The networking opportunities are also very apparent. A range of Special Advisors to Ministers attend — who proactively seek to engage attendees in conversation — so they can highlight information and trends that can be brought to the attention of senior policy makers.”

Since its formal meeting with Special Advisors to the Prime Minister, the IPIA has engaged closely with cross-sector body the Graphics and Print Media Alliance (GPMA). It is now in the process of canvassing its members for feedback that will shape the IPIA’s on-going engagement with Government. If you would like to feed into this process directly and highlight to the IPIA specific market challenges and trends — or have suggestions on the targeted support required from Government — please email info@ipia.org.uk

WORLD PREMIERE FOR VANGUARD’S VK3220T-HS

Vanguard Europe has unveiled a next-generation UV flatbed printer, the VK3220T-HS. In the first public showing at FESPA, the machine had pride of place on its stand alongside Durst, which has owned Vanguard since 2020. Showgoers were invited to see live production on the stand.

The launch also marked the official introduction of a new compact, user friendly product design for the Vanguard Europe portfolio. The changes — a result of a collaboration with multi award winning Zanzotti Industrial Design, which is also behind the design of the Durst portfolio — bring a more intuitive, ergonomic and optimised experience for machine operators.

The new Vanguard VK3220T-HS is designed and assembled at the European headquarters of Vanguard Europe at 5,000 square metre Kraftwerk, in Brixen, South Tyrol, Italy, next to the global HQ of Durst.

A 3.2 metre x 2 metre flatbed, the VK3220T-HS becomes part of Vanguard Europe’s growing portfolio of printers serving all customers in markets covering the industrial flatbed and roll-toroll printer spectrum with high performance needs.

Kyocera print heads at up to 1800 dpi print resolution, the Vanguard VK3220THS runs at up to 360 square metres an hour. It is a printer that can grow and scale in line with customer requirements.

Vanguard Europe is a subsidiary of Vanguard Digital Printing Systems Corp, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, USA. Set up in late 2021, Vanguard Europe’s objective is to replicate the sales successes of its parent company, which produces 200 systems a year. This is being achieved by utilising the global expertise of its resellers, distributors and other partners. Vanguard’s industrial printing flatbed and roll-to-roll systems are used in markets

equipment, industry and packaging.

Fabian Sottsas, Managing Director of Vanguard Europe, said: “We were incredibly excited to be at FESPA for this world launch of the Vanguard VK3220T-HS next generation UV flatbed printer. Together with a new modular design with user friendly design changes that are more intuitive, ergonomic and optimised for the operator, this has been of huge interest to visitors at the show.”

Mr Sottsas added: “Our strategy to become market leader will only happen through growing profitable business together in partnership with our customers.”

MIMAKI LAUNCHES TIGER6001800TS DYE SUB PRINTER

Mimaki Europe, a provider of industrial inkjet printers, cutting plotters, and 3D printers, launched the new Tiger600-1800TS, Mimaki’s most productive sublimation transfer printer, on its stand at ITMA 2023. This latest high speed, compact and robust roll to roll inkjet printer has been designed to accelerate the analogue to digital transformation within the textile printing industry.

The Tiger600-1800TS boasts a maximum printing speed of 550 m2/h (143% faster than the previous model) owing to the renovated high speed printhead and Mimaki’s proprietary image quality enhancement technologies. The printer’s size has also been halved compared to the previous system, with the paper mounting and winding system both located at the back of the machine. This smaller footprint enables customers to easily install multiple units to meet fluctuating demand, whilst also increasing overall production capacity.

“All of these latest and innovative developments ideally position the Tiger600-1800TS to compete with analogue textile operations and support the move to digital print production,” explained Arjen Evertse, General Manager Sales, Mimaki Europe. “The benefits of digital printing are wide ranging compared to lengthy, complicated and unsustainable analogue production methods. Digital printing offers a seamless, cost effective solution for producing smaller quantities that can be adjusted to fit varying demand. It also enables greater design flexibility and reduces environmental impact by enabling local production, minimal inventories and therefore, wasted products, as well as completely cutting out the wastewater that results from the analogue process.”

A further environmental benefit of the Tiger600-1800TS will

EPSON AT ITMA

Epson unveiled its new Monna Lisa printers at ITMA 2023, demonstrating the latest Epson innovations for a constantly evolving digital textile market.

The latest innovations in the Monna Lisa series presented at ITMA 2023 feature Epson’s PrecisionCore Technology to offer complete and flexible solutions meeting all textile market needs. At the show, Epson showcased its new, revolutionary Monna Lisa ML-16000/HY and Monna Lisa ML-24000, as well the new configuration Monna Lisa ML-8000 (displayed REACID configuration) and Monna Lisa ML-32000 in new 340 cm width.

“Epson is constantly focused on renewing and expanding its range of solutions for textile printing and offering its customers the opportunity to meet the needs of an increasingly demanding and competitive market seeking the experimentation of new approaches, from shorter processes to the use of new fibres”, says Paolo Crespi, Commercial Director Epson Como Printing Technologies. “Thanks to

be the imminent bluesign1 certification of its MLSb510 series sublimation transfer inks. This certificate, expected to be awarded in June 2023, will provide assurance that these inks are of highest quality combined with due consideration for the safety of consumers and print operators, and environmental conservation, and therefore, contributing to the sustainability of the textile industry.

Mimaki’s renowned expertise in developing reliable, easy to use and efficient solutions has also not faltered in the development of the Tiger600-1800TS. The printer’s ink tanks can be replaced without interrupting the printing process, minimising down time. Maintenance of the printer is also reduced with its roller paper feeding method eliminating the need for the application of adhesives onto a belt.

“The Tiger600-1800TS captures the needs of our customers and prospects perfectly with all of its advanced engineering and practical, user friendly features. We’re confident this new addition to the Mimaki portfolio will further promote the shift to digital textile printing, thereby supporting this inspiring industry to be quicker to adapt to changing production requirements, whilst also being more environmentally conscious,” Arjen concludes. Mimaki is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services – visit www.hybridservices.co.uk for further information on the entire product line-up.

our extended Monna Lisa series, we strongly want to highlight how the transition to increasingly sustainable textile production processes can be implemented through highly flexible solutions”.

The revolutionary Monna Lisa ML-16000/HY is the ideal printer for companies that need to optimise the production of complex prints and offer the market more creativity. It can uniquely digitally create any type of the most sophisticated special effects for modern printed fabrics with gold, silver, and glossy tints, ranging from glossy lacquer through to gold and silver metal and opaque white.

Concept of flexibility and efficiency is raised to the next level thanks to the wide range of available colours, the reduction in the downtime required to change inks and the possibility of producing certified printed fabrics without changing the type of inks in the machine. The first to be equipped with 24 Epson PrecisionCore printheads and 12 colours, Monna Lisa ML-24000 can

natural, artificial, and synthetic fabrics through to the most innovative vegetable fibres. Thanks to the wide range of inks supported, companies can finally obtain any specific required certifications (such as GOTS or OEKO-TEX) very quickly and just by relying on one single machine.

Monna Lisa ML-8000 is the first printer in the series to be designed with the new REACID configuration, which is an absolute novelty in the Monna Lisa landscape and will soon be available on all other printers in the series. This new configuration adds a wide selection of other materials and fibres to the list of fabrics already supported by Monna Lisa printers, including non-

traditional fibres, and thus reinforces Monna Lisa’s ability to adapt to a wide range of printing requirements, providing greater flexibility of use.

The Monna Lisa ML-32000 combines Epson’s high-tech digital technology with unprecedented versatility. Its new width of 340 cm allows two pieces of fabric to be printed at the same time, thus increasing productivity and reducing energy and resource consumption. The new printer’s width is particularly suitable for furnishing and home textile, allowing even faster printing of curtains, bedspreads, furniture and decorative accessories.

DURST GROUP EXPANDS P5 FAMILY

Durst Group, manufacturer of digital printing and production technologies, has unveiled its expanded P5 portfolio at FESPA, under the motto “360° Production Excellence”. The motto refers to the company’s evolution from a pure press manufacturer to a systems provider that combines all aspects of digital production such as automation, flexibility, speed, software, services and sustainability.

“Digital large format printing is the core competence of the Durst Group and our success with our P5 printing systems illustrates this,” said Christoph Gamper, CEO and co-owner of the Durst Group. “This year, we have expanded our P5 portfolio by 360° and aligned it with current market requirements. We are convinced that our solutions will help our customers to sustainably increase profitability through efficiency and state of the art production technology.”

DURST P5 ROBOTICS — NEXT LEVEL OF AUTOMATION

Following the introduction of the P5 Automat, an automated feeder/stacker system for flatbed printing, Durst is igniting the next stage of automation with P5 Robotics for flexible and continuous production cycles with long run times. At the heart of P5 Robotics is the flagship P5 350 HS D4 hybrid printing system, whose feeder/stacker unit is formed by two Kuka robots to handle the unmanned production of a complete shift. The robots, modified and programmed by Durst, can pick up media from different pallets with a height of up to 180 cm, feed them and stack them again separately. In the process, the printed media can also be turned 180° for reverse side printing and fed into a second printing system. P5 Robotics can also be expanded with third-party solutions or finishing systems.

TO-ROLL PRINTING SYSTEM

Durst’s high-performance hybrid printing system, the Durst P5 350 HS, is joined by its ultra-fast counterpart for roll-to-roll applications, the P5 350 HSR. The P5 HSR high speed 3.5-merer LED roll-to-roll printer achieves print speeds of up to 670 m2 per hour and can be equipped with an optional master roll. This can feed rolls weighing up to 1,000 kg and 635 mm in diameter, enabling long production cycles without interruption. Flexibility and versatility are included here and the printing system can be equipped as D4 with double CMYK. For printing mesh and perforated material.

DURST GROUP — THE GOOD COMPANY: MUCH MORE THAN REDUCING THE CO2 FOOTPRINT.

It is a matter of course for Durst to use the latest technology to sustainably reduce its carbon footprint. In addition to the commissioning of photovoltaic systems at its production sites in Brixen and Lienz, which generate at least 50% of the annual energy requirement or 2,200 MW/h, all

and energy technology. In addition, the Durst Group has received its first Ecovadis certification and will continue to improve processes based on this. In terms of printing systems, Durst offers water based ink systems for a wide range of applications, energy saving LED drying and heat recovery modules in the large format printing sector. Ink saver and automated prepress functions also enable resource saving production. In addition, Durst is involved in many initiatives in the LFP market to further develop the sustainability potential for itself and its customers. And last but not least, 97% of “Durst`ler” (Durst employees) think that Durst is an excellent place to work. Customers also benefit from this motivation, because behind every Durst printing system there is great passion and a good dose of positive stubbornness. This is cultivated via a corporate environment that is positive for employees, with many additional benefits such as hybrid working time models, the company’s own lounge and restaurant, gym and much more.

NEW FIERY DFES BOOST PRODUCTIVITY

FOR

KONICA MINOLTA

Fiery LLC, the largest independent provider of digital front ends has announced two new, highly automated Fiery digital front ends (DFEs) for the Konica Minolta AccurioPress 6120/6136/6136P and 6272P printers. They have been developed to help print businesses boost throughput, reduce waste and drive more margin in monochrome cutsheet production printing.

One of the two new solutions, the Fiery MIC-4160 DFE, drives Konica Minolta AccurioPress 6120, 6136, and 6136P printers and processes jobs 30% faster compared to the previous generation DFE. The Fiery MIC-4170 DFE delivers an even more significant speed boost and processes jobs 41% faster than the MIC-4160 — or 86% faster than the previous generation Fiery DFE.

In addition to bringing higher productivity to AccurioPress 6120/6136/6136P, the new, top of the line Fiery MIC-4170 DFE also supports the new Konica Minolta AccurioPress 6272P tandem engine printer. The MIC-4170, built on the advanced Fiery NX Pro platform running Fiery FS500 Pro software, eliminates any workflow bottlenecks that could prevent users from continuously running at the AccurioPress 6272P’s impressive maximum speeds of up to 272 letter size (or 156 tabloid size) duplex impressions per minute.

Fiery is the leading DFE platform in cut sheet commercial digital printing; and print businesses that use Fiery technology across all of their digital printers benefit from being able to use a single, unified workflow that streamlines operations for both monochrome and colour printers.

The de facto industry standard Fiery Command WorkStation user interface for all Fiery DFEs gives users the power to manage multiple Fiery servers — and maintain a comprehensive view of all production printers in a facility — from a single interface.

Standardising on a Fiery workflow throughout a printing plant also means that newer, less experienced staff can be as productive and efficient as experienced production operators — a significant advantage in a print industry that faces challenges in attracting and retaining skilled personnel.

FIERY TOOLS FOR SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY AND IMAGE QUALITY

These Fiery MIC-4160 and MIC-4170 DFEs come standard with a set of highly functional tools that automate work and produce optimal output, including:

Fiery JobExpert, an advanced solution that automatically selects the optimal imaging settings for a job, shaving valuable production minutes from job setup time. JobExpert brings intelligence to the digital front end, unlike traditional OEM DFEs that require users to manually input settings — a practice that can lead to mistakes and wasted labor.

Fiery ImageViewer for Black and White provides a full resolution raster preview for easy black tone curve adjustments. Operators can save and apply the curve to future jobs, or split long runs between

similarly equipped print engines to guarantee consistent output.

Fiery Preflight, a new, automated feature for monochrome Fiery DFEs that prevents waste by easily identifying potential file errors before printing, such as missing fonts and low resolution images.

Free access to cloud analytics with the Fiery IQ™ suite of cloud intelligence and management applications. With IQ, print business and in-plant managers can make better, data-driven decisions to minimize costs, maximize profits, and boost revenue.

Fiery JobFlow™ Base, a software solution that automates prepress workflows to streamline job processing and printing.

Standout solutions for uniquely powerful monochrome printing

In addition to the included Fiery ImageViewer for Black and White, the two new Fiery DFEs also ensure exceptional image quality for Konica Minolta monochrome engines with Fiery grayscale calibration technologies for enhanced shadow detail.

“These new, highly functional DFEs help to differentiate Konica Minolta AccurioPresses from other monochrome printers in the market,” said John Henze, Fiery’s Vice President of sales and marketing. “Without Fiery DFE technology, users miss out on the advanced processing power of Fiery FS500 Pro — our core software platform which enables users to always run their digital printers at top speeds. Plus, other DFEs do not offer the exclusive intelligent automation power of Fiery JobExpert, which saves time by ensuring correct settings for accurate printing the first time, every time.”

The new Fiery MIC-4160 and MIC-4170 DFEs for Konica Minolta AccurioPress 6120/6136/6136P and AccurioPress 6272P printers are available now from Konica Minolta and/or its authorised dealers or distributors. ANOTHER INFINITE NUMBER OF MONKEYS

Back in 2018, Martin Christie began this column with reference to an infinite number of monkeys, a theory first proposed by mathematicians over a hundred years earlier in that rarefied atmosphere where simple adding up becomes philosophy. The premise was that given enough time and a sufficient number of typewriters, a monkey bashing away at the keys in a random manner would eventually write a Shakespeare play. It’s a fanciful concept, although he has it on the good authority of Professor Brian Cox no less that given the nature of infinity, it is actually not only likely but actually possible.

Given the finite nature of the universe, as far as we know, it is unlikely there would be a stage or even a planet, available to perform it on. It also assumes that the primates would actually think it worthwhile to pursue a literary career rather than hanging around in the trees, eating bananas and generally having a good time in evolutionary terms. A couple of more recent experiments introducing the smartest and quickest to learn, chimpanzees, to laptops produced no more interest from them than something to chew or urinate on. There is, of course, an important difference between something produced by a random sequence of actions and something created by intelligent thought and learning. It’s the difference between banging two rocks together by chance to make a spark and using the discovery to design a jet engine. While many animals have learned to make simple tools to aid survival, only the human brain has been able to extend the talent to more

complicated creations, whether functional or merely artistic. Until now, that is. A good part of the discussion on artificial intelligence involves whether it is intelligent in a human, intuitive sense rather than a predictive machine, albeit a very sophisticated one. Can it produce something truly original or just reproduce an alternative version of what has already been?

The question has prompted heated discussion among artists and other creatives, although that often fails to acknowledge that any creation of the mind is also mostly the product of a library of sights and other sensory influences stored in memory. So what’s the difference with a machine using its enormous computing power to trawl a massive bank of resources to generate an innovative image? The issue is surely how much of a difference an individual can make, but it is one that is unlikely to be resolved as the conclusion will always be in danger of being overtaken by technology.

Much of the broader debate about AI, now it is very much in the public domain, seems to be led by those who are apparently unaware they have been taking advantage of it for some years already in services and devices. It has come to the fore now they realise there may be consequences they hadn’t anticipated at the time.

Regular readers will know that as far as digital imaging is concerned, I am both an enthusiastic user and a serious critic in equal measure. My contention is that, like any useful tool, it’s important to know how to use it, even if you can’t get your head around all the complex algorithms. If you drive a car, you do not need to know the intimate workings of the internal combustion engine and its reciprocal parts, but you do need to be aware of what will happen if you keep your foot on the accelerator!

As far as print is concerned, we have been using AI-assisted tools for some time, mostly in selecting and replacing pixels to produce a seamless image, compared to

14 JULY/AUGUST 2023 • QUICK PRINT PRO PIXEL PROPHET

clumsy cloning and patching, which was the only previous option. This applies to colour as well as shapes which are all the same electronic patterns as the processor sees them. How it interprets them can be varied and sometimes apparently random. That’s why some manual override is usually a safer bet.

A more important reason is that no one tool in Photoshop does everything perfectly — there are always at least six ways of doing something, and each one has its benefits and disadvantages. Only experience or trial and error will reveal what they are. A oneclick fix-all is still a big step away, at least to the professional eye, if you are attempting something to match reality rather than a digital fantasy.

GENERATIVE FILL

At the time of writing, the next big and muchanticipated upgrade, introducing Generative Fill, had yet to arrive, but that is expected in the second half of the year and may well be part of our next column after the summer break.

Unlike previous upgrades, this has been extensively previewed and available as a Beta version for some time, but perhaps bugs are still being sorted. After all, it is taking the concept of content-aware to a whole new level, but maybe not the magic bullet that will solve everything, at least for us who have to turn screen illusion into hard paper reality.

GenFill is linked to the Contextual Bar, which appeared in the previous update and is actually an adaptive toolbar that aims to provide the features you want exactly where you need them instead of having to search for them — like putting a spanner close to hand for the next nut.

But unlike previous filling aids, it doesn’t just sample pixels in the existing image but can draw on an almost infinite reference library of online images to source its patch and then blend it — more or less seamlessly — into the original. And this image search can be done by a text prompt of features required rather than a visual comparison. So you can type absolutely anything into the menu, and GenFill will try and serve it up. It’s content-aware on steroids, as Jeremy Clarkson would probably describe it. You may have spotted one of the limitations already. Like many tasks these days, it relies on a good internet connection, not only for sourcing the image but for the processing power available in Adobe’s servers that would cripple the average user’s desktop. As we always say, other editing programs are available. Still, the effect will be even more notable for those trying to use the cheaper, alternative versions of this intelligent software on their phones. Even with Photoshop, the patches can often be low resolution, screen dimensions, in large

files causing blurred edges and other odd anomalies.

Suppose you are trying to create a totally artificial, unnatural vista. In that case, this is probably not an issue, but for using GenFill to edit unwanted features in images, particularly for large print output, it obviously needs to be handled more gently. As with the Healing tools, as well as Content-Aware, the trick is not to ask it to do too much at a time. Small dabs are better than big brush strokes, and if you are requesting actions by word, be very specific about what you want it to do. Be careful what you wish for, as they say.

More of this when we have the full version shortly, but be warned that more images edited by computer are likely to be coming your way, as well as claims that you don’t need any professional skills to perform magic.

Of course, if you haven’t upgraded your computers to 2023 performance specifications, you may struggle with the latest updates, which are both memory and graphic display dependent. If you are lucky, you may be able to upgrade both to keep up. It’s worth checking what your existing system will handle as a number of basic office desktops can be improved.

Check out what the geeks on U-tube recommend as well as what the manufacturers tell you, as lots are tuned up as cheap gaming computers.

Even without GenFill, the last Photoshop upgrade, 24.5, had a really handy tool which almost slipped under the radar, calling it the Remove tool, which Adobe very much undersold. Yes, it removes things, but in order to do that, it has to sample the pixels around it and replace the original object with something appropriate otherwise, it will just leave a big hole. So in effect, it becomes another option for healing, cloning and content-aware.

If it doesn’t pop up in your brushes, you may need to find it in the toolbar and refresh. It’s not perfect, or at least it’s no better than the task you give it to tackle, but if you are familiar with the other brushes and how they work, you will be able to achieve things that previously would have been impossible or extremely difficult.

If you look at the ostrich behind bars and then breaking out, you may think it’s just one of those tricks you can do on your phone with the press of a button. But it’s actually a high-resolution image which has been modified almost perfectly for print — not the sort of instant fix gimmick you can see online. It’s exactly the sort of transformation customers will think you can do in a second, but it’s knowing how complicated and how much professional skill you can offer if they are prepared to pay for it.

Similarly with the much anticipated GenFill, until we’ve had time to test it with various images and difficulty levels, the verdict will have to hold.

But it does some things really well and others rather badly. Although it’s only a quick challenge, I used an Adobe Stock AI-generated image of the monkey with the laptop and then manually superimposed the screenshot of Hamlet because it looked like the best match.

When I asked Genfill to place a Shakespearean image instead, it got a bit confused, presumably because of all the many options at its disposal. I probably should have been more specific instead of letting the software decide what was best. Similarly, when I asked for a human to replace the chimpanzee, it got a little confused, putting the constituent parts together, and came up with a figure that looks like it had been jumbled up in a teleport from some science fiction. Lesson learned, make sure the computer knows exactly what you want. I know customers often expect us to be mind readers, but Artificial Intelligence hasn’t yet installed that ability.

You may also spot that AI struggles with very human features like hands and noses, something that no doubt will be corrected in future versions. However, it is likely that the human touch will still be needed to supervise and perhaps correct the machine-created results. Otherwise, monkeys may well randomly press the right keys to generate something resembling Shakespeare, but whether anyone will want to watch it is another matter.

DIRECT TO FILM HOW DTF PRINTING CAN BENEFIT YOU

We all know there’s a large variety of techniques you can use to print graphics onto garments, and here we talk more about the process of Direct to Film (DTF) and the benefits involved.

DTF is the transferring of prints from film onto almost any garment using heat. As well as cotton, DTF can print on to 99% of fabrics. DTF can also be developed using different technologies, such as UV printers which can then be transferred onto various objects and surfaces, such as glass and plastics.

WHAT DOES A DTF PRINTER DO?

Direct-to-film printers allow you to print your designs onto film and transfer it directly onto almost any garment of your choice. It also gives you more freedom over the placement of your design and can be helpful when applying your printed transfers/designs onto smaller areas of a garment, such as the neck, sleeve or trouser leg, compared to standard print locations, such as the front or back of a t-shirt.

HOW DOES A DTF PRINTER WORK?

DTF Film and Printer Inks: DTF printing allows you to print onto a sheet of film before it’s adhered to your garment by heat and utilises water-based inks, mainly in white and the CMYK colour gamut. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black deliver brilliant results on a large range of printed materials. The white ink acts as a base or an undercoat for the CMYK inks so that the adhesive powder can be applied.

Adhesive Powder and Curing Oven Heat Process:

The first CMYK layer is printed onto film, then the DTF machine prints a white layer backing over the entire image, completely covering the CMYK layer. An adhesive powder is then applied onto the semi-wet ink, and if you have a full ‘in-line’ system like the ones within the Heat FX DTF printer range, the powder is applied automatically and shaken to remove excess amount of powder from the treated film to ensure an even coating before it goes through the oven to quickly melt the adhesive powder into your print films, giving you your completed transfer.

FEDRIGONI TAKES TO THE TRACK

Fedrigoni is pushing the accelerator even harder. The Group, one of the world’s leading operators in premium self-adhesive labels and materials — including the films used in the automotive world to customise and protect vehicles — and in special papers for luxury packaging and other creative solutions, is the new sponsor of Sicilian driver Salvatore Tavano, motor racing champion in the Gran Turismo Endurance category.

“We at Fedrigoni are delighted to be alongside a multi-medallist champion like Salvatore Tavano and a team of excellence like BMW”, comments Marco Nespolo, CEO of the Fedrigoni Group. “For us, automotive is one of our reference sectors, where we intend to grow further in the global market, with a complete range of self-adhesive products for visual communication and car wrapping. Many of the principles underpinning a successful sports team, such as teamwork, focus on talent, result orientation, drive for innovation and constant commitment to excellence, are at the heart of Fedrigoni’s culture and DNA. And it is thanks to the talent, determination, resilience and passion of our 5,000 people that we have become the world’s leading producer of special papers for luxury packaging and labels for wine and spirits.”

A leadership that Fedrigoni aims to expand also to other very promising market niches, such as car wrapping and visual communication for vehicles: it is no coincidence that last July the Group acquired the Turkish company UNIFOL, specialised in CAST PVC technology thanks to state of the art plants, whose latest generation film materials are used to protect car bodies, change their colour or apply graphics.

“I am thrilled to be back in a championship of

excellence like the Italian GT”, declared Salvatore Tavano. “I thank my sponsors for their support, I

will certainly try my best to repay them with good results.”

Indeed Tavano, after having won three titles in a row in 2018 in the TCR Italy with the Cupra of Tarcisio Bernasconi’s Scuderia del Girasole, scoring 14 victories and climbing the podium 36 times, has turned over a new page by choosing the BMW ItaliaCeccato Racing team.

The 2023 Italian Gran Turismo Endurance Championship will take place over four races: after Pergusa, the stages of Mugello (9 July), Monza (17 September) and Vallelunga (15 October) will follow. All races will be broadcast in live streaming on the social channels of the Italian Gran Turismo Championship (Facebook and YouTube) and live on ACI Sport TV, channel 228 of Sky. www.fedrigoni.com

GOOD NEWS FOR PRINT AND PAPER

European Consumer Preference For Printed Materials Has Recovered Significantly Post Pandemic.

At the height of the pandemic in 2021, many consumers had shifted from print on paper to the internet and read more on digital devices, across all categories of communications, including; newspapers, magazines, books, catalogues, bills and statements, tax statements and personal health information. That trend has reversed, however, with consumer preference for print rising significantly over the past two years. This is according to a new consumer survey commissioned by Two Sides Europe and conducted by international research company Toluna. The Two Sides Trend Tracker Survey is conducted biennially to assess consumer preferences and perceptions related to print, paper, paper packaging and tissue products.

“Despite the surge in online media and widespread withdrawal of printed communications during the pandemic, it’s clear that many consumers still value print on paper,” says

Jonathan Tame, Managing Director of Two Side Europe. “Many people are moving back towards print, especially when reading books and magazines.”

The survey shows that the percentage of European consumers who prefer to read printed books has risen to 65%, up from 53% in 2021. The preference for printed magazines is now 51%, up from 35%. The trend for newspapers and catalogues is similar, with the preference for print up to 31% from 26%, and to 33% from 21%, respectively. The preference for paper bills and statements is also on the rise, up to 38% from 19%, as is the preference for printed personal health information, up to 39% from 29%.

Learning And Understanding

The survey also sought opinion on the advantages of reading material in print. This revealed that more than half (52%) agreed or strongly agreed with the statement: “I think children and students learn more when reading printed rather than digital books and course materials,” compared to just 16% who disagreed or

strongly disagreed. 45% agreed or strongly agreed with the statement: “I get a better understanding of the story when reading news in print rather than online, compared to 28% who disagreed or strongly disagreed.

These results reinforce academic studies that have demonstrated the important role print has in education and in helping people understand complex information, whether that information is in the form of textbooks or news stories.

“This survey reveals a number of fascinating facts about print and the many advantages it has for consumers,” says Jonathan. “As we complete our analysis of all topics covered by the study, including packaging and the environment, we’ll be sharing even more insights for the print and paperbased packaging industry.”

An executive summary of the Trend Tracker Survey 2023 will be published in June and available to industry stakeholders on request. Contact Two Sides at enquiries@twosides.info to register your interest in receiving this summary. www.twosides.info

LABELEXPO EUROPE 2023 RETURNS TO BRUSSELS

Registration for Labelexpo Europe 2023, the world’s largest label and package printing technology trade show, is now open. This will be the first time Labelexpo Europe has been held at Brussels Expo since 2019. From 11-14 September, the biennial show promises to be an unforgettable experience, featuring hundreds of live demonstrations, product launches, three expert-led masterclasses and special events focused on automation and flexible packaging.

Aimed at label and flexible packaging converters, brand owners and packaging designers, Labelexpo Europe 2023 covers nine halls with over 600 exhibitors across four days. Leading suppliers taking part include ABG, Avery Dennison, Bobst, Domino, Durst, Epson, Fujifilm, Gallus, HP, Kocher & Beck, Konica Minolta, Mark Andy, MPS, Nilpeter, OMET, and Xeikon.

Alongside the exhibition, visitors will get the opportunity to attend three expert-led masterclasses organised by The Label Academy, an Automation Arena, and a Flex Pack Trail.

The popular educational programme will comprise of three half-day masterclasses which will cover wine labelling markets and technology, flexible packaging and sustainable labels and packaging.

Additionally, visitors will also get the chance to attend the Dieline Forum, a two-day design conference that will explore the latest trends and innovations shaping the brands of tomorrow. With a focus on sustainability, the Dieline Forum will dive into the strategies and practices that are capturing the hearts and wallets of Gen Z and Millennials, who are increasingly drawn to eco-friendly products and brands.

At the Flex Pack Trail, visitors will be able to learn more about digital and conventional press technologies, flexpack material constructions, coating, laminating, ink and curing requirements, inline and near-line decoration options, QC and migration testing. Live demonstrations will take place and visitors will be able to take the trail at their own leisure.

Printing of both filmic and paper-based flexible packaging materials will be demonstrated by a number of suppliers including HP Indigo on its new 200k digital press, Xeikon on the new TX500 Titon toner press, Screen on the Truepress Pac520P — seen for the first time at a Labelexpo — and Lombardi and Bobst on mid-web UV flexo press lines.

The Automation Arena features a full ‘lights out’ production workflow, from file creation to digital printing and converting. The participants include CERM, Esko, AVT, Xeikon and Grafotronic. As well as automated setup and inspection of both printing

and converting processes, the CERM MIS will collect real-time information via a Cloud portal which visitors will be able to monitor on their own smart devices. CERM will demonstrate printing of closing labels on each roll on the turret rewind.

A new feature for Labelexpo Europe is Flexo’s Future — ECG, a series of presentations and guided tours on Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) printing. Daily presentations by renowned ECG expert Dr Kai Lankinen will take place on the show floor, examining all aspects of fixed colour palette printing, where up to seven inks (CMYK+OGV) are used to reproduce spot colours. The presentations will address questions such as why is ECG not more widely used in the labels industry? What are the requirements to implement a successful ECG workflow? And what are the sustainability and efficiency advantages?

Taking place on the first evening of the show, 11 September, is the Label Industry Global Awards ceremony, themed as ‘Crowning the Industry’s Champions’. The awards highlight the key achievements and successes of individuals and companies working in the label and package printing sector. Malcolm Rae of GEW will receive the Global Achievement Award, and the winners of the other categories — Rising Star, Team Achievement, Innovation, Sustainability and Converter of the Year — will be announced on the night.

Labelexpo Europe 2023 is again strongly supported and endorsed by trade bodies FINAT, EUWID, Febelgra, SPPES, UNFEA and VskE.

Jade Grace, portfolio director of Labelexpo Global Series said, “We are delighted to be running Labelexpo Europe again and can promise visitors an extraordinary show across nine halls. We will see an explosion of cutting-edge technology launched at the show, everything from pre-press to materials, and digital and conventional print and converting technology. Add to this a world-leading series of educational events and our focus on Automation and Flexible Packaging for label converters and you have an unmissable Labelexpo experience.”

For the last 14 years, Ast, which has bases in Cumbria and Warrington as well as a nationwide applications network, has been working towards becoming carbon neutral by implementing a number of schemes.

These initiatives included introducing solar panels, using electric cars, installing new charging points, increasing recycling, and reducing travel and fuel consumption. The company also switched

technologies such as HP Latex printers to support its long-term sustainability goals.

All HP Latex printers use water based HP Latex Ink, which has a significantly lower impact on the environment than other inks such as solvent, eco-solvent and UV. The use of this print technology increased Ast’s environmental credentials and contributed to it achieving carbon neutral status.

Ast operates almost exclusively with HP Latex printers, installed by approved HP partner Perfect Colours, and uses these machines to produce a wide range of printed work such as transport branding, signage and commercial interior design for global names in motorsport, logistics, healthcare and education.

“We’re proud to be not just sustainable, but the only transport branding company in the UK to be carbon neutral, in accordance with PAS 2060; the last 14 years have been a great learning process.

Managing Director Mark Aston says.

“It’s good to know we’re doing everything we can to work sustainably. We know that our carbon neutral status will be of huge value to our clients who are also becoming increasingly conscious of their own carbon footprint.”

Jane Rixon, Large Format Production Business Development at HP adds: “We’re delighted that Ast has been able to secure carbon neutral status, and that our environmentally friendly HP Latex print technology played a part in this achievement.

“By working with HP Latex technology, printers can offer their customers a much more sustainable service while retaining a superior quality of print.

As demand for environmentally friendly printed work continues to increase, HP Latex printers offer a cost effective way of helping print service providers become more sustainable.”

ANTALIS INSPIRE STUNNING WEDDING STATIONERY

Creative Papers from Antalis have been used by Amoretti, a full service wedding and event planning business with bases in London and Rome. From venue scouting to event design, organising entertainment, catering and more, nothing is left to chance — even the wedding stationery paper choices.

At Amoretti, the design and print of all elements of the stationery are done inhouse by founder Emiliana Gualtieri using a combination of hand painting and digital techniques to create her designs.

When it comes to choosing papers for the stationery, the first criterion on Emiliana’s checklist is quality: “It is important for me that when a person takes one of our invitations in their hands, they can feel the quality”, she adds.

Emiliana is familiar with the creative range of papers from Antalis and recently entered four examples of her work into the Antalis Creative Power Awards.

STICKERSHOP STICKING WITH ROLAND DG

It is becoming an uphill battle for businesses to stand out from the crowd, especially when it comes to providing goods and services in an era of hyper-consumerism, which is certainly true for the web to print self adhesive label and sticker industry. However, Stickershop has continued to move far ahead of its competition.

Established in 2017, Stickershop is a small label and sticker printing company that has fast grown in the last five years, providing waterproof stickers, paper stickers, die-cut stickers, foil stickers, and laminated vinyl.

The reasons for Stickershop’s success lie in the pedigree of the team of so called print ‘nerds’ that are available around the clock to discuss custom orders or even general business enquiries. But that is not the only factor contributing to Stickershop’s rapid growth. With an increasing contingent of nine Roland DG machines at their disposal for rapid printing and cutting, 95% of the company’s orders can be sent out in less than 48 hours.

Stickershop’s Director, Shane Pritchard, explained that “as a growing business, all that Stickershop needed was reliable machines that provided premium printing and cutting services which were economical. But with Roland DG machines, and particularly the VG-640, we have much more than this — with rigorously tested, industry certified TR2 inks and Roland DG Connect software giving us premium prints at competitive prices. Prices which can be monitored and controlled.”

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS

As the economic crisis deepens, print shops need to focus on scaling back costs wherever possible. This is an area in which Stickershop has utilised Roland DG technology to the fullest, using the Roland DG ‘take-up system’, which allows users to wind up printed material automatically and manage

unmanned production with maximum efficiency. The system includes a convenient front mounted take-up roller and an advanced tension controlled take-up unit for optimum media feeding and tracking. This tool has given Stickershop the ability to save on labour and people hours whilst running longer monitored runs.

In these worsening economic conditions business output is also a major concern. This is where Roland DG Connect comes into play — a machine monitoring app that helps print shops gain a detailed understanding of their entire print operation while keeping their devices running at optimum print performance to reduce downtime and improve work efficiency. Businesses can utilise the business dashboard to quickly calculate job costs and profits by entering the per-unit selling price and the cost for ink and media.

OVERSIZED LUGGAGE

A passenger was having difficulty lugging his oversized travel bag onto the plane. Helped by a flight attendant, he finally managed to stuff it in the overhead bin.

“Do you always carry such heavy luggage? she asked, winded.

“Never again!” the man said. “Next time, I’m riding in the bag, and my wife can buy the ticket!”

HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR STEAK

Waiter: How do you like your steak, sir?

Customer: Like winning an argument with my wife.

Waiter: Rare it is.

When Tom Hanks writes his memoir it should be called ‘T. Hanks — For the Memories’.

APPARENTLY, A TRUE STORY

I was halfway through a meeting with a photocopy salesman, when he suddenly mentioned his wife and children, and how content and happy he was. I was puzzled but let him continue. It was only when I glanced down that I understood his reason for imparting this personal information. The table leg against which I had been rubbing my itchy foot wasn’t a table leg at all.

HOW A-MOO-SING

City boy, visiting his cousin’s farm: “Say, why doesn’t that cow have horns?”

Country cousin: “There are many reasons why a cow might not have horns. Some grow horns late in life, some have them removed, some might lose them in an accident, and then there are certain breeds who simply never grow horns. This cow doesn’t have horns because it’s a horse.”

JET FUEL

Ben and Jim were a couple of drinking buddies who worked as airplane mechanics in Gatwick. One day the airport was fogged in and they were stuck in the hangar with nothing to do. Ben said, “Man, I wish we

had something to drink!”

Jim says, “Me too. Y’know, I’ve heard you can drink jet fuel and get a buzz. You want to try it?”

So they pour themselves a couple of glasses of high octane hooch and get completely smashed. The next morning Ben wakes up and is surprised at how good he feels. In fact he feels GREAT! NO hangover! NO bad side effects. Nothing! Then the phone rings. It’s Jim. Jim says, “Hey, how do you feel this morning?”

Ben says, “I feel great. How about you?”

Jim says, “I feel great, too. You don’t have a hangover?”

Ben says, “No, that jet fuel is great stuff — no hangover, nothing. We ought to do this more often.”

“Yeah, well there’s just one thing...”

“What’s that?”

“Have you...err... broken wind yet?”

“No.”

“Well, don’t… I’m in Lanzarote’

PROFIT IN PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

The man’s printer was printing more and more faintly, so he decided to call the repair shop.

A young man answered the phone and told him, “You can bring it in for cleaning, but that will cost you £50. Therefore, it might be prudent to just read the manual and try fixing it yourself.”

Surprised by the answer he had just got, the man said, “Thank you, young man. Does your boss know you are pushing away customers?”

The young man replies, “Actually, it is his idea. He tells me if we allow people to try and fix the printers themselves, we’ll end up making even more money.”

BINGE-PRINTING PUNS

I cannot trust people who use large format printers. They are always plotting something.

Why did the printer refuse to print the fake news? Because he didn’t have the fax.

My opticians sent me a letter, but I am concerned about their printer. Either it is failing or they used a blurry font.

What did the printer yell after all the paper ran out? Oh, sheet.

The new clever printer printed the selfie she took in ultraviolet ink. People now see her in a different light.

My friend could not understand why I was sad when my cheap reproduction printer became obsolete. I told him that it was like a brother to me.

The printer said it wanted to join a band. It made total sense. It loves to jam.

What happened to the printer that performed miracles? It got Canonised.

Which type of printer do pigs use? An oinkjet printer.

What did the older printer tell the younger printer? Do not use that toner on me.

What did Snow White say after the printer jammed? My prints will come one day.

The man was laid off for stealing printer cartridges. He was caught magenta handed. Why was there wet ink in the printer? Because it could not control the P.

What happened to the printer salesperson who dreamed about selling a brand new type of ink? She woke up and realised it was all a pigment of her imagination.

My friend says his 3D printer can print a gun. I’m not very impressed. I have had a Canon printer for over a decade.

Why were the counterfeiters looking for a brand new copier? They wanted to acquire one that was in mint condition.

Why do printers go to the gym? To get toner. The man walked into a printer shop and demanded that they print for him a book with pages 40 feet long and two feet wide. The printer said, “What’s the purpose of the long pages?” Man, “It’s a long story.”

WEE COUGH

I phoned my work this morning and said, “Sorry boss, I can’t come in today, I have a wee cough.” He said, “You have a wee cough?”

I said, “Really? Thanks boss, I could use a week off!”
