DORSET DIGITAL INVESTS IN NEW MORGANA AUTOCREASER
Dorset Digital Print Ltd, based in Wimborne, has enhanced its print finishing capabilities with the addition of a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 50. The creasing machine has replaced an ageing DigiFold, and is being used to crease both litho and digital work produced by the company. Commenting on the purchase, Debbie Summers, Joint Director of the company, said: “We put it to work as soon as it was installed, creasing a six page A4 brochure! A creaser is a critical tool in order to produce a clean well folded printed product.” Dorset Digital Print needed to carry on producing during the Covid-19 lockdowns of the crazy last year: “It’s been tough, but, as we needed to
produce print items for the local hospitals, it was essential. As directors, we have had to put a lot of hours in ourselves of course, whilst using the flexifurlough scheme to ensure that we had enough staff to handle the work as it came to us. “Like everyone else, we are looking forward to a return to something approaching normal in the near future. Up to last March things were going wonderfully for us as a company, and then, like many others, the work largely dried up. “Thankfully, we were able to help some customers by producing shorter runs of work via our digital printing service, rather than the long runs that they might have normally ordered. We are looking forward to the long runs returning very soon.” The AutoCreaser Pro 50 provides the complete solution to the problem of cracking that can occur when folding digitally printed output. It is equally effective in dealing with conventionally printed card, laminates or cross-grained stock. The machine employs Morgana’s unique creasing rule and matrix that eliminates tearing and, therefore, cracking of the printed image. The intuitive seven inch SmartScreen controls all the main functions of the AutoCreaser Pro 50. Using the screen is simplicity itself. Key in the sheet length
DOCUMENTING MODERN HISTORY ON ANTALIS PAPERS
A fascinating insight into children’s responses to the Covid-19 pandemic has been printed on a selection of papers from Antalis. Jonny Banger, designer and owner of subversive fashion label Sports Banger, invited young people under the age of 16 to express their feelings about the pandemic by designing a poster using the letter sent by Boris Johnson to the nation’s homes in March 2020, advising households to ‘stay at home’, as the medium. The overwhelming response received has led to an exhibition and production of a 352 page book; The Covid Letters – A Vital Update is a unique printed book documenting the artwork and sharing the remarkable insight into how children feel about this extraordinary moment in time. Originally, the book was to be printed in Eastern Europe, but Jonny Banger looked to source a reliable printer closer to home. A recommendation brought Banger to London based Gavin Martin
4
Colournet. On receiving the brief, Gary Bird, Managing Director of Gavin Martin, consulted Antalis to source papers that were comparable to those originally specified, as he was confident their extensive range would include ideally suited products. For the book’s cover, Gary recommended Keaykolour Deep Black in 300gsm, a rich black with recycled content and carbon balanced by Antalis UK. This product offered the look and feel Jonny Banger was hoping for whilst also meeting environmental requirements. The inside pages were printed on Claro Bulk 130gsm. Gary commented on his selection, “Most of the children’s submissions were artwork with lots of colour and so it was important that we were able to reproduce these as faithfully as possible. We wanted a coated paper with a true matt texture and Claro Bulk fulfilled these criteria perfectly”. Alongside the artwork are index cut pages which feature some of the letters from parents that accompanied the entries. Printed on a lightweight pale pink paper, the look and format of these pages was designed to change the pace of the book. For this, Gary chose Image Coloraction in Tropic Pale Pink, an uncoated multifunctional paper. Produced in a limited run of 800 copies, The Covid Letters sold out quickly. Both Gary Bird and Jonny Banger were delighted with the result. www.antalis.co.uk
(popular sizes are pre-set), touch the fold type for the finished product, and press the green button. The AutoCreaser Pro 50 will then automatically calculate where the creases need to be and set them accordingly. The unit can produce up to 16 creases per sheet, on stock from 0.4mm, and can run at up to 8,500 sheets per hour. The AutoCreaser Pro 50 is part of a range of equipment at Dorset Digital for folding, trimming, die-cutting, padding, wire-o binding, drilling, stab stitching and saddle stitching. “High quality printing is important, but that then needs fast and efficient finishing to a high standard to complete the work,” added Debbie. The company also offers its postpress expertise as a trade service for other local print businesses. Other services offered by Dorset Digital Print include graphic design, from a new logo or corporate branding through to full colour brochures or catalogues; and large format printing, from shop signage through to promotional banners. The list price for the AutoCreaser Pro 50 is £13,490. www.dorsetdigitalprint.co.uk www.morgana.co.uk

HALSTAN STRENGTHENS ITS PRINTING PROPOSITION Halstan has purchased a varioPRINT iX3200, following the successful implementation of a Canon varioPRINT i300 in 2019. The new device will offer high quality colour book production, whilst improving overall efficiency and increasing capacity. An international fourth generation family run printers and specialist book producer, Halstan was founded by Harold Smith in 1919 – and today, is led by his great grandson, Rupert Smith. Historically known for its sheet music printing, the business has evolved in recent years and now offers, alongside sheet music, a wide range of book products including educational textbooks, mainstream books, notebooks and other high quality publications. Its headquarters reside in Amersham, with additional sites in Germany and the USA. Halstan has been working with Canon UK & Ireland for a number of years to support its growth and diversification. Following its investment in a Canon imagePRESS device and varioPRINT TITAN toner technologies in late 2018, the business then purchased a Canon varioPRINT i300 in 2019. This resulted in greatly improved efficiencies in Halstan’s existing workload, whilst also attracting business from a range of new customers. Halstan has once again prioritised its investment plans with the purchase of a Canon varioPRINT
iX3200, which will help support its growth ambitions even further. The device offers customers the ability to print on a variety of standard offset coated and uncoated media and textures – whilst also retaining the highest levels of colour quality and consistency. These features will allow Halstan to greatly increase its production capacity and offer its customers outstanding products. Rupert Smith, CEO of Halstan, commented: “We strongly believe in developing partnerships with our customers, and finding the best solutions for them. Canon very much backs this ethos, and truly understands the goals we have as a business. The latest purchase will provide us with the additional capacity we need to grow our offering further.
BTP CRAFTSCREEN UPDATES FINISHING WITH PERFECTA 168
BTP Craftscreen has updated its cutting capabilities with investment in an IFS-supplied baumannperfecta 168 guillotine. Established in 1987, the Coventry operation specialises in high quality screen printing and large format digital print for retail theatres and other promotional campaigns. It made the investment to replace an aging Dexter Lawson solution and to run alongside another Perfecta 168. “We already had a Perfecta so investing in a second system was the natural choice when it was time to replace the Dexter Lawson,” explains Director Russell Inglis. “It was getting to the point where we wouldn’t be able to get parts for the older guillotine. We have work on both systems all the time and couldn’t afford to not have them both running. “The Perfecta was the natural choice. We knew how consistent and reliable it would be and that it would handle the work. It is doing the job just as we expected.” The high speed baumannperfecta 168 is ideally suited to a wide range of materials including paper, board, films and foils. The user friendly intuitive Perfecta Cutpit makes the processing of various jobs simple and centrally monitors working processes before, during and after cutting for smooth and efficient workflow. The system’s doubly enclosed cast-iron machine frame provides stability and its ServoDrive guarantees precise positioning of the cutting material. Its slotless cutting table facilitates gentle stock handling while its knife changing device, with two-point support, stabilises the knife and prevents unwanted movement. Russell adds: “The computer makes a huge difference in the set up and the air bed makes paper handling easy. It is top notch.” www.ifsl.uk.com

And, the print quality and stock diversity of the new system will take Halstan into new markets – a proposition I’m really excited by. “There are constant demands from the market for shorter print runs and quicker turnarounds. This purchase, combined with new investments in our bindery, mean that we will be able to produce the highest quality colour perfect bound, threadsewn, ota-bound and saddle-wired products in short runs. This will all be driven by automated workflow solutions, which can be linked through to our client’s own ordering systems. This is not only helping them to de-stock, but also to generate efficiencies through the automation of print purchasing operations”. www.canon.co.uk
SPRINGTIME = PLANT-YOURPENCIL TIME
Finally, Spring is in the air after what seems to be an endless winter. The sunshine and warmer temperature make it the perfect time to plant your Sprout pencils. The trick to successfully growing flowers, herbs or trees is not to plant the pencil stub too deeply – the capsule should just be covered by soil. This way, the seeds get enough light from the beginning. Sprout are also part of a campaign for brand Garden Gourmet. Garden Gourmet is all about delicious plant-based food. Garden Gourmet’s purpose is to make people fall in love with all the goodness of plant-based food because it’s good for them and also for the planet. And what better way to communicate this than with Sprout pencils that grow into basil, cherry tomatoes and thyme? If you have any garden centres amongst your customer base why not suggest they sell pencils? www.sproutworld.com

MIMAKI GLOBAL INNOVATION DAYS Mimaki has unveiled its Innovation Days (2-4 June 2021), a collaborative virtual event, bringing together Mimaki’s regional offices to encourage and nurture innovation in the printing sector. The programme of events, led by experts from Mimaki Japan, USA and Europe, will focus on addressing the needs of customers and prospects in their local markets, as well as demands across sectors (sign graphics, industrial, textile and 3D) to overcome today’s challenges and drive success within the industry. Attendees will also have the opportunity to further explore the newest additions to Mimaki’s product portfolio, the JFX550, JFX600 and SUJV-160, through live demonstrations following the launch of these solutions at virtual.drupa. Initiated by the Mimaki Print Festival last year, Mimaki continues to expand its online events programme to support and connect with partners and customers globally. Using a custom online platform, visitors to the Innovation Days will be able to attend live demonstrations of Mimaki’s latest products, have access to special promotions, watch webinars, meet and chat to Mimaki experts, and engage in roundtable discussions. In addition, this joint venture between regional offices offers visitors the unique chance to explore the Mimaki headquarters, with virtual tours of the HQ factory in Japan and the chance to engage with exclusive greetings from the president during the event. Mimaki Europe, USA and Japan will also have targeted, regional event agendas, open to local print service providers or those outside the region who are looking for greater insight into the global printing industry. “Throughout 2020, Mimaki prioritised our customers, partners and the wider industry, offering online support, education and networking in the absence of in-person tradeshows and showroom tours. As the impact of the pandemic continues into 2021 for many, so does the need for the printing industry to work together and inspire each other to succeed”, Danna Drion, General Marketing Manager EMEA, comments. “With Innovations Days, we very much
wanted to recreate the lively, innovative space of a tradeshow as much as possible. Over these few days, Mimaki experts and the public alike will come together to share collective expertise, engage in discussion, and showcase the application possibilities achievable with brand new Mimaki technologies. We have seen many businesses expand or completely shift their portfolios to new sectors during the pandemic, and we hope to support and encourage those undergoing or considering change.” Leading up to the Innovation Days, Mimaki Europe has also released another virtual initiative, Mimaki Digital Showroom, to engage with its customers. This virtual space mirrors the traditional showroom where Mimaki’s customers and prospects will be able to experience the technologies in action and speak to the team about the latest market trends and the solutions that could help them meet current demands. The Mimaki Digital Showroom project is part of the company’s efforts to stay side by side with the digital printing community and commitment to adding value and keeping developing the online experiences. www.innovationdays.mimaki.com • www.hybridservices.co.uk
N3 DISPLAY GRAPHICS STAYS ONE STEP AHEAD Large format graphics production and installation company N3 Display Graphics recently used Drytac Polar Street FX aluminium print media to produce a range of eye-catching outdoor floor graphics to promote social distancing across the city of Bristol. Bristol City Council designed a series of 2m x 1.1m (6.36ft x 3.6ft) footprint style graphics for use in high traffic areas of the city ahead of non-essential shops reopening. Shops in England had been closed since early January due to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. The aim of the graphics was to encourage social distancing among shoppers when they were out and about on the high street, helping to limit any further spread of the virus. As such, Bristol City Council required an attractive design that would stand out under shoppers’ feet. The printed graphics also had to be safe for use underfoot. The Council specified they should have a proper slip rating, meaning they were safe for use in busy areas that could be exposed to wet weather, including high streets and other retail settings To meet these challenges, the Council turned to N3 Display Graphics, a Bristol based company that specialises in large format graphics for both indoor and outdoor use. As a long time user of Drytac materials, N3 Display Graphics quickly identified Drytac Polar Street FX as the ideal solution for the project. Polar Street FX is a PVC-free, aluminium print media suitable for both outdoor floor and wall graphics, without the need for lamination. The slip resistant printable film can be applied to ground or wall surfaces such as brick, concrete, asphalt or any other low energy surfaces. Polar Street FX holds a ‘Low Slip Potential’ 72 PTV according to the EN 13036-4 Pendulum Test. In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) only recognises slip ratings based on the Pendulum Test Method. N3 Display Graphics Director Nigel Walker explains: “The Council specified that we use aluminium backed slip rated material so Polar Street FX was the ideal choice for the job.” N3 Display Graphics cut the graphics into the curved footprint shape with its Zünd cutter with double edged tungsten blades, which was easily able

to handle the strong wearing nature and toughness of the Polar Street FX aluminium backing. In terms of working with Drytac, N3’s Nigel Walker adds: “We have a long history of mutual respect with Drytac, and they always have the right products at the right price.” The Bristol footprint graphics have been a great success. Nigel continues: “After a month out on the streets, the graphics are all standing up well and are helping people to return to shopping safely. www.drytac.com

THEMAGICTOUCH AND RESOLUTE IN DIRECT-TO-FILM COLLABORATION TheMagicTouch and Resolute DTG in the UK announce their collaboration with the joint introduction of the latest in digital image transfer innovation. Both companies for the past six months have conducted an extensive evaluation of all things relating to the new DTF (Direct to Film) transfer technology. Having the ability to produce short and long run full colour transfers for garments and textiles, regardless of colour or composition and being compatible with cotton, polyester, leather, softshell, performance fabrics, pique blends, canvas, denim and much more, is a must for all garment decorators to consider. The new process is simple; firstly print the roll fed 60cm wide coated PET film using a special pigment based textile ink and then lightly coat the printed transfer with a unique hot melt adhesive powder. The transfer is then cured using either the automatic “Shake&Bake” roll fed unit, heat press or traditional dryer. The cured transfer can then be applied immediately to the garment/product using a traditional heat press. Please note there is no pretreatment required to the garments. The flagship printer for DTF is the new R-Jet Pro DTF printer featuring the latest in dual print head technology 2 x 8 channel industrial print heads (2 x CMYK) and (8 x W) and powered using the latest version of Resolute RIP PRO software to ensure control and colour management. Amongst its many features the printer includes the “Ink mixing” function to ensure the perfect circulation of the white ink resulting in minimal maintenance or production issues. The wet cap system allows the printer to be switched off for periods of up to one month without the need to flush out the white ink. For those looking for an affordable and reliable alternative to DTG, but prefer the look and feel of textile inks, then the DTF technology is exactly what you are looking for. This new technology “Bridges the Gap” between DTG, screen printing and the traditional transfer printing methods. The finished transfers offer outstanding durability, stretchable and incredible feel and vibrant colours.
Jim Nicol Managing Director of TheMagicTouch commented, “We have previously opted away from DTG for various reasons and indeed passed any enquiry directly to Colin and his team at Resolute, but the DTF process is simply the best new transfer solution for many, many years. With our transfer experience combined with Resolute’s knowledge and experience with DTG we believe we have the perfect combination to market and more importantly support this product beyond customer expectations. This really is a game changer for this industry”. DTF offers more flexibility with the transfers. Printed transfers can be forwarded elsewhere to be applied at a later date with a shelf life of over two years, thus creating another potential revenue stream for the user. Both TheMagicTouch and Resolute supply the printers and powder units together with the inks, PET film, and consumables, all supported with the highest standard of technical and marketing support. For further details, samples or to arrange a demonstration contact sales@themagictouch.co.uk or sales@resoluteink.co.uk
QUALITY MATTERS — PHOTOTEX IS THE ARTISTS’ CHOICE
London based American artist, Loreal Prystaj, is using Phototex self-adhesive fabric as a key component in her new and unique art installation, which runs from May 7th to June 26th, in Islington at No.20 Arts. The installation is an immersive kitchen space that Loreal invites the viewer to consume and be consumed by its sights, scents, and sounds. “As I was developing this piece, I knew that Phototex was the material I needed for the wall covering,” says Loreal, who first used this fully recyclable, self-adhesive fabric over a year ago for her degree show at the Royal College of Art (2019). “Phototex was like nothing I had used before. It is very easy to apply, remove and then reapply. This is so important to me as it is hugely frustrating to work with products that are tricky to install and allow no margin for trial and error. What I love about Phototex is that I can quickly remove bubbles and creases and if it has been installed slightly crooked, it is very easy to remove and replace exactly as I want it.” She adds, “Phototex is really strong and doesn’t tear like actual wallpapers or stretch like most vinyls. As a photographer who relies 100% on photorealistic reproduction, this is absolutely vital and a key reason why Phototex is so important to my work.” Phototex has a receptive coating that enables hugely detailed inkjet printing and produces vibrant and striking finished images. The unique, patented adhesive allows for fast, easy application and it can be removed and re-applied, and doesn’t leaves any residue or damage to the surface. Loreal concludes, “I am very thankful to Landor UK for helping me with this project. As an artist, I want to use products that maximise the impact of my work, but this is not always possible because of budget and availability. Landor has been so helpful in making this
8
material accessible and affordable for me, which I believe is vital to the success of this installation! I am really looking forward to having my work as part of a physical show — after a year where exhibitions were online and artworks only being seen through a screen — I am excited to invite people to come and enjoy the installation.” See more about the exhibition at www.no20arts.com

VELOBLADE VOLTA GOES B1 You asked and they acted. After the incredible reception the VeloBlade Volta range received, it quickly became apparent that, for some, they needed to be able to work with B1 and long sheet up to 1000mm for the type of work they’re doing. With that in mind, Vivid set about introducing a system that enables businesses to do work exactly like this… and here it is, the VeloBlade Volta 1070+! Comprising the same features and functionality of the Volta 64+ and Volta 69+ the 1070+ opens up a world of new possibilities by bridging the gap between small format and wider format cutting and giving businesses the capability to work with sheets up to B1. Coupling the size of the system with the depth it can cut, up to 10mm, this latest addition to the Volta range is possibly the most versatile yet. Scott Maxted of Adco Products Ltd told us. “Having a digital cutter that allows us to process B1 size material was a game changer for Adco. Having spent a day with the Vivid team at their HQ where we initially went to see a 64+, we quickly realised the additional benefits of a B1 size machine to service and cater for the flexibility of product we produce and required. The Vivid team listened, innovated, and offered a solution in super quick time. Our Veloblade Volta 1070+ is now on site and producing great products. A quick mention about after care. Having a network connection allows Vivid technical to support and resolve start up teething problems very quickly and issues are resolved literally within seconds. Great product and service”. Sales Director at Vivid, Richard Marlow says, “We’ve always taken pride in listening to our customer’s ideas, collaborating with them, and implementing these ideas as efficiently as possible. That’s what our customers love about

THE PEN WAREHOUSE AND SNAP PRODUCTS LAUNCH GRATITUDE INITIATIVE Last month The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products introduced a new initiative with the aim to express gratitude more frequently both internally and externally. It is important to show appreciation, reflect on achievements and show support to your customers and colleagues. The initiative started like most things, as a by-product of the pandemic. Once stripped of things we all commonly take for granted, the companies wanted to create a system to boost staff morale and productivity by building stronger professional relationships. A little note can mean so much to someone. You can find out more information on gratitude and productivity on their latest blog. So how does it work? Postboxes have been placed in main communal areas for employees. Staff can write their words of praise, thanks or encouragement on the back of the postcard and place it in the postbox. Similarly, teams are encouraged to send the same to clients that have made their week. All postcards are designed, manufactured and printed in-house from 280gsm FSC® certified paper and hold three UK made Neapolitan chocolates. Free of charge samples are available to distributors. NEW CREASESTREAM AND PROCUT The traditional process of impact blade and matrix creasing with in-line folding no longer meets the high standards digital print companies now demand when producing greeting cards, according to CreaseStream Founder, Graham Harris, after announcing the launch at the ‘virtual’ live launch of the 10,000 sheet per hour FoldStream solution his company developed in collaboration with finishing technology partner ProCut. The Creasing innovator, who in 1999, invented the Tri-Creaser, the only rotary device to prevent folded items coming off a folding machine from cracking confesses he could not have completed FoldStream without someone with vast experience in manufacturing and in also creating world class solutions in the packaging/direct mail industry!
TRADITIONAL FOLDING METHODS CAN CAUSE BENDING AND FRACTURING
Graham said ‘Dirk Stunkel, the founder of German based ProCut builds amazing plough fold units — this was the missing piece in the jigsaw I have long been trying to complete for quite a few years now, and he and his talented team bring a lot more to the table. There is so much value in greeting cards and for every copy to stop whilst a blade strikes down does not make sense; our patented rotary method gets the job done up to three times faster. Our research told us that the ideal production speed for a one person operation averages around 10,000 copies per hour, so we capped it at that to meet the criteria, although we can go much faster,’ explained Harris.
THE CREASING IS KEY!
FoldStream was designed around Harris’s new rotary Tri-Creaser Advance technology
which applies creasing to both sides of the card simultaneously, so the fold is more flexible and easier to apply. The process all starts with CreaseStream’s patented ‘non marking’ bottom fed feeder which holds up to 15cm height load of cards and was designed to keep topping up, so production is seamless and uninterrupted. The plough fold is always in-line with the crease! It’s what happens at the end of the cycle that excites Harris the most, as he stated, ‘there is no better way to fold, particularly when dealing with heavy weight stocks above 300gsm, than using a soft plough application simply because it does not bend or fracture the finished product like many other systems that use rollers. Such methods of finishing will often undo all the good work carried out at the beginning of the production cycle. The
key to fast make-ready between smaller quantity batches is simply down to the plough always staying 100% in-line with the crease, this means all the operator needs to do is move the registration side lay over and reset to different size formats, it’s very simple!’
FOLDSTREAM LEAVES THE FOLDED PRODUCT FLAT The CreaseStream and ProCut collaboration brings this single fold application to the digital print environment, however extra accessories, such as additional ploughs, a gluing system, tape applicator, rotary trimming, micro-perforating, and much more can be added. There is a brief teaser video of the machine in action which you can see at https://youtu.be/ t0NcdCG6WQ8
PAPERSPECS PRO MEMBERS BRIEFED ON FLUORESCENTS Color-Logic CoFounder and CTO, Richard Ainge, who also developed the Touch7 Neon process, recently briefed PRO Members of PaperSpecs on the power of the new fluorescent inks available on the latest digital presses. Said Ainge regarding the briefing: “Touch7 was developed five years ago for conventional and digital presses, but as more digital presses with fluorescent inks become available, graphic designers often find themselves unclear about the potential and the pitfalls of fluorescents. We provided the PaperSpecs PRO Members with an overview of colour gamut expansion, the various print engines available, and the design software now on the market. OEM colour guides available from press manufacturers were also described.” PaperSpecs Founder and CEO Sabine Lenz, commenting on the briefing, said: “PaperSpecs PRO members were entranced by the presentation, and suggested that material from the Color-Logic fluorescents briefing should be part of every design school curriculum.” Said one audience participant: “I gained a significantly deeper understanding of the technical side of fluorescent design and how to enhance colour intensity.” PaperSpecs is a a one-stop resource for print creatives--a place where like minded graphic designers can hang out, ask questions, get tips, gain insights, and access the latest swatchbooks and promotions. IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
Martin Christie reflected on last month’s column on Artificial Intelligence and the nature of machine learning upon which it is based. Prompted by a couple of things that caught his attention, it further encouraged his train of thought.
I
n light of the increasing use of AI in all manner of processes, the point I was making was that it should be considered an invaluable aid, rather than an absolute direction — a guide and not a dictator of facts. Like any tool, unless you understand how it works and what it does, you may not end up with the results you want, and, moreover, not even realise it. What drew my attention was a particularly irritating advert for Alexa — that little talking pillbox of wisdom that so many people have adopted like it was an amusing pet rather than a substitute for thinking. A witless father is harassed by his precocious child for historical facts and resorts to Amazon’s soothing vocal database to save his educational reputation, and worse still, smugly pretends he knew the facts all along. I have nothing in particular against Alexa or any other smart device, rather the marketing promotion that it will make you more intelligent, more creative and more successful than you would be without it. The logical progression is that you will gradually be unable to do anything without electronic assistance. Of course, we do so many things every day that are done better, quicker and safer, with the aid of computers. The whole pace of life, social and economic now depends upon them. But the potential flaw lies in the very nature of machine learning itself. In simple terms, it is basically linear in nature: because there is A, there is B, therefore C and so on. It can get to XYZ, and probably very quickly, but it has to flash through the alphabet to get there. Until the binary system upon which it is based is made redundant by an alternative, it will continue to be the pattern, albeit a highly advanced one. The process is not able to make the exceptional lateral jumps intelligent organisms have evolved to do by a mixture of experience, intuition and perception through their various senses. But they are trying to fill in the gaps of electronic education. Enter Deep Learning — not a new idea but an extension of it. It’s an attempt to mimic the workings of the human brain by learning from its mistakes as well as its successes and copy all the intricate internal actions of the human brain. You may not have heard of it, but you are already living and working with it; in fact may already be suffering from it as it is lurking in the background of your computer, smartphone and many other modern devices. It may be a well-intentioned invasion, desperate to make itself more useful anticipating what you like, what you may want to do next. Still, the demands on the memory banks and computing power of your machine are considerable. Deep learning is an intrinsic part of almost all current software, so if you have updated anything in the last few years, you are running with it. You don’t have a choice — there was no tick box to check that you wanted or needed it. In last month’s column, my contention was that however smart the technology still needed human intelligence to cast 14
an eye over its results to check its efficacy. The intention of deep learning in the longer term is to perfect machines that require no human supervision at all. The device will, in effect, be marking its own exam paper. Replacing human judgement in roles that are dangerous or tedious is nothing new and largely commendable. It has generally made the workplace safer and less arduous, and the speed of complex calculations has made previously insurmountable tasks possible. But a device that, in effect, has its own agenda is one that needs to be viewed with caution. It is not the stuff of science fiction, with robots intent on dominating the human race with evil intent. Quite the reverse, they are being developed to serve us and be content to do so. But relying on binary logic to determine our best interests and desires has a potential flaw. When a machine decides what we want, even what we need, it is a time when we stop having any choice at all. If you are new to this column, you may already be wondering what all this has to do with digital imaging; regular readers will indulge me as they know I will eventually get round to my point of reference. The simple fact is that we no longer work in an isolated bubble if we ever did. Work has invaded our home environment and vice versa, and the lifestyle of ourselves, as well as our customers, has changed forever. Their choices and expectations are very much dominated by a small piece of apparently intelligent metal and plastic they carry in their hands and consult at all times. That reality has more relevance in the overall activities of on-demand print than the precise detail of a particularly useful tool in Photoshop.
PHOTOSHOP’S AI GUIDE
In fact, Photoshop has very much taken over the functionality of this column by using its own AI to guide you on how to do things and how to use its options specifically rather than search for tips and tutorials online. It is a much faster alternative to trawling through links that more frequently now direct you to things they think you ought to know or like, rather than things you actually want, for all the reasons previously discussed. There was always a help option hiding mostly unnoticed and unused in the top toolbar. Not only has the reference library of this choice been expanded, but there is a more intuitive guide on hand by pressing Control (Command on Mac)>F for Find, and that will help source the right tool and how to use it. Somewhat ironically, this provides

the very human possibility that has always been available in PS that there are more ways than one of doing things, rather than letting the software dictate what is right and what is wrong. But don’t worry, there is no danger of Adobe’s machine learning, which is called Sensei, replacing me anytime soon. There are still many more mysteries in the digital world to be discovered more by accident than design and solved more by thinking outside the box rather than within it. Sensei is a term used in martial arts, meaning teacher, and suggests that it is your sage and guiding hand in all things creative, which of course, in many ways it is. But who teaches the teacher? That’s more than a philosophical question and one which will continue to challenge AI. One of those challenges is facial recognition, intended simply to identify individual faces and widely used in security and social media, but is purely based on biometric data — measurements of the regular dimensions of a face. It might just as easily identify something that closely matches these clues — a feature that looks like a face in the bark of a tree — or alternatively fails to recognise a face when matching features are missing — if the person is wearing a mask example. Amazon had to abandon selling it to police forces, not because it impinged on human rights, but because it just didn’t work, or at least couldn’t be relied on. As humans, we rely on many more senses to identify people, read their expressions and emotions, and communicate with each other. Birds that nest in great colonies can find their young amongst thousands of other apparently identical ones because they can spot and sense more than the colour of their plumage. If it was down to facial recognition technology, they would probably starve. QUICK PRINT PRO • JUNE 2021
In a more frivolous way, there are other means of using facial recognition in the changing of features to make individual faces more appealing or amusing — adding bunny ears or doggy tongues to a profile, for example. But apart from entertaining, the technology is potentially useful for other reasons. If you understand it, you can apply it intelligently rather than randomly, as most people tend to do. As an old fashioned photographer who grew up with film, image capture was more intuition than science. You had to learn what the camera saw because you couldn’t see the results until the film was processed and printed. But then that’s how you learned, working backwards, analysing the mistakes and trying not to make them again. In many ways, that sounds like how deep learning is supposed to work, and in many ways, it does. However, sometimes history teaches us mistakes can be happy discoveries, and technically correct answers may not always be the ones you are really looking for. It’s a process called serendipity — something useful found by chance. That’s very much how I’ve applied myself to digital photography and printing and why this ramble is the theme of this month’s column. I appreciate that those new to the industry may find the technology a little bewildering, as I did at first. There seemed to be so many experts explaining ICC profiles, calibration and colour gamut, all sounding so knowledgeable and correct. Even a little device measured colour and told you precisely what Pantone number it should be. All very clever and scientifically accurate. But at the end of the day, it’s what the customer expects that is the right colour, even if the technology says otherwise because, in the real world, there are margins for error or perception that computers don’t allow for. It’s not a perfect world. So I’ve always fallen back on the old darkroom principle of when in doubt, do a test strip and then work backwards to your source rather than the other way around. If there’s nothing wrong with the printer, then there’s something wrong with what you’re sending to the printer, which is usually the case when dealing with customers’ files rather than ones you have nurtured yourself. You never know what buried treasures like within that digital file until you try and open it up.
A BASIC LESSON
So this month’s very basic lesson in printing is about the most simple Photoshop colour picker tool, often overlooked because of the more sophisticated image management options now available. But it is the quickest to do some basic adjustment to see which direction you need to be heading and whether what you see on the screen bears any similarities to what prints out. While the colour picker has the values in RGB and CMYK as well as LAB or any chosen pixel or group of pixels — remembering you can alter the number sampled by clicking on Sample Size at the top of the workspace — It also has HSB, which stands for Hue, Saturation and Brightness. Hue is the actual colour, Saturation is the amount of it, and Brightness is just that, bearing in mind that anything printed will be reflected light, Hue vs Saturation and Brightness not backlit. But you can easily review and balance out these choices by moving the slider back and forth from left to right and up and down, and see how brightness or lack of it makes a difference to the shade you want. The most common issue in print is that the output is too dark and dense compared to the customer’s expectation because they have never seen anything more than a little bright screen. It is the simplest way to correct while keeping the original colour without meddling with adjustments at the printer end. You can do that by eye without having to consult any artificial intelligence. 15

COLORCUT SC5000 Intec launches a truly revolutionary new type of automated cutter – filling a massive gap in the print finishing marketplace.
T
here is currently no other model available worldwide, that offers both; 100% reliable high-volume auto feeding, along with a dual tool head for both cutting and creasing. The SC5000 does this and is a seriously professional and productive machine, that even weighs in at around the same low price point as its less competent nearest rival! Blending flatbed and sheet fed technologies, the all new ColorCut SC5000 is perfect for fast, automated production of both die-cutting and creasing light weight card for packaging and P.O.S, paper and polyester projects — as well as kiss cut sheet label production.
HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE COMPETITION The all new ColorCut SC5000 has been developed by Intec from the ground up. Listening to print professionals in the field, Intec has produced a top quality digital sheet cutter that hugely out ranks the fairly limited capabilities of sheet cutters in its class. Firstly, by offering a revolutionary new suction operated belt feeding mechanism, that flawlessly feeds from its
cavernous 1,000 sheet media stacker. Secondly, at the sharp end, the dual tool cutting head features a double ended creasing tool alongside the cutting tool. This enables the SC5000 to both cut and crease. These two aspects alone, (not to mention its low price point), put the SC5000 head and shoulders above any device in this print finishing market space!
FULLY AUTOMATED AND ON DEMAND
SC5000 is fully automated and can be set to provide complete unattended operation. Similarly, being an ‘on demand’ digital sheet cutter with no dies or setup costs — the user can easily perform a one off sample, or develop batches of prototypes or cut thousands on a production run. Targeted for busy print departments, seeking an affordable, high capacity device for complete unattended cutting production.
HIGH CAPACITY AND ULTRA RELIABLE FEEDING
The SC5000 features a high capacity 1,000 sheet media stacker which can feed a constant demand. The revolutionary new suction belt system draws upon the media stack and offers faultless feeding! In conjunction with an LED sensor, the top sheet in the stack is separated from the other sheets by an airbladeLITE® system, similar to that used on Intec’s popular ColorCut FB8000 flatbed cutter. The suction feeding continuous belt drive mechanism is automatically synchronised to lower and pick the top sheet when offered — and presents it on to the cutting strip. This system has been designed to provide unattended operation with particular attention paid to the feeding of popular media such as; card, vinyl labels, polyesters and even tricky laminated sheets.

AUTOMATIC CUT FILE RETRIEVAL With the arrival of the given printed sheet at the cutting strip, the live CCD video camera automatically reads the QR coded sheet and instantly retrieves the associated digital cut file. The predetermined cutting tasks are communicated to the cutting head for exact and precise execution of the tasks required. There is therefore no need for a highly skilled machine operator. When creating vector artworks on PC or Mac, in a networked design studio, ColorCut Pro is used to add an auto assigned (editable) QR code to each design, whilst auto saving the cutting file to the ColorCut Pro Job Library — this becomes the cut file that the networked SC5000 retrieves upon reading the QR code.
LOVES MIXED JOBS IN THE STACK.
Offering an unparalleled production capability to cut a mixed batch of jobs, the SC5000 will seamlessly retrieve the associated cut files for an unlimited number of different jobs in the stack. This is totally instant and with zero delay, enabling a seamless and uninterrupted flow.
TOTAL PINPOINT ACCURACY
When applying the QR code during the artwork stage, ColorCut Pro also adds a series of marks in the corners of the sheet, this is a four point SmartMark registration system, enabling the cutter to ensure superb accuracy with the cut lines and also compensate for any print stretch or skew.
GRIP AND DRIVE
ColorCut Pro software enables full control over tasks and workflow
The unique ColorCut ‘Grip and Drive’ dual roller system, holds the sheet media during cutting on BOTH sides of the cutting head, enables the SC5000 to cut closer to the media edges than most other types of sheet cutter.
COMPACT AND FULLY-MOBILE
PROPRIETARY VECTOR APP INTEGRATION
Intec’s renowned ColorCut Pro software ships with all ColorCut devices and integrates with Adobe® Illustrator® or CorelDRAW® with plug in support. All desired tasks such as; first cut, score, perforate, final cut etc, can be conveyed by the colour applied to its vector line. This data is all captured within the dedicated QR code and subsequently read by the cutter. If required, design content can be changed and the sheets reprinted — without the need to edit or remake the cut file. In fact, the cut files can be used for any subsequent jobs of the same shape, which feature different printed design content — alternative versions and sets, for example.
CREASE AND CUT AND FAST!
The digital cutting head can apply a force of up to 750g of pressure and cut and crease simultaneously at speeds of up to 960mm per second, enabling users to produce either one or indeed hundreds of sheets and thousands of items.
Revolutionary suction media pick up belt gives faultless feeding
Designed with space saving in mind, the free standing and fully mobile SC5000 also features a retractable media catch tray that slides away when not in use, ensuring that its sub-1sq mtr footprint can easily be accommodated in any print shop. Word from Intec management: Mark Baker-Homes, Intec director of product development states: “The SC5000 is quite simply, a stunningly cost effective automated sheet fed digital cutter, for cut through of any shape on lightweight card, paper and even the kiss cutting of sheet labels. We would love to show off the full range of impressive features through a face to face personal — or even virtual, demonstration…” SC5000 is perfect for cutting and creasing; swing tickets, mirror hangers, hotel key card pouches, shelf wobblers, product cartons and gift boxes, and of course sheet labels — all cut to any shape desired. ART OF PRINTING
MOUNT STREET PRINTERS
MAKERIE STUDIO
Mount Street Printers has collaborated with leading paper manufacturer Fedrigoni UK and creative workshop Makerie Studio on a new installation at their store in the heart of Mayfair. The window display commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the family run business producing luxury stationery, and celebrates the art of printing.
S
ince 1981, Mount Street Printers has produced fine stationery and printed materials using techniques that balance traditional craftsmanship with the latest technology. Taking inspiration from the printing machines that date back 80 years and are still used by the printers today to create bespoke, hand-crafted print, Makerie Studio has created a three-dimensional sculpture of an antique printing press made entirely using Fedrigoni paper. Titled ‘Make Your Mark’, the display also features archival materials showcasing the breadth of work produced over the last four decades. Makerie Studio, who specialise in crafting intricate sculptural works from fine and rare paper, studied the printing machines which have been collected and carefully restored by the family. The resulting installation brings to life the complex mechanisms found within each of the presses and that lend handmade print their distinctive finish and quality. Alex Cain, Director at Mount Street Printers, said: “Over the years, we have sought out beautiful printing machines from all corners of the world and have worked tirelessly to transport and painstakingly restore each one. Every machine has its own unique characteristics and personality. They allow us to produce exceptional work for our clients and this installation really captures the essence and ethos of our business, bringing to life the craftsmanship and skill behind the art of printing.” The inherent characteristics of the paper played an integral role in the creative process. Makerie Studio used the Fedrigoni Paper Box, which houses their entire library of papers and is intended to help creatives in material 22
selection, to choose a combination of stocks from the Freelife Vellum, Nettuno, Imitlin, Materica and Sirio Pearl ranges. The Oltremare and Acqua shades of blue for the main body of the machine bring a warmth to the installation, which are contrasted against the gold used to recreate the mechanical components. Penny Greenwood, Paper Consultant at Fedrigoni UK, said: “We continually aim to inspire creatives working with paper, providing them with materials which allow them to push the boundaries of their craft. Alongside being an ode to print, this installation also showcases the versatility and creative potential of paper. As the colour palette was a crucial starting point, Makerie Studio worked with Nettuno Oltremare and Materica Acqua for their earthy tones and rigidity, which were lifted by the vibrancy of the Sirio Pearl Aurum. These were used alongside Freelife Vellum White and Imitlin Cielo Tela embossed for their tactile properties and robust physical construction. It’s these unique qualities and finish that give the sculpture a modern look and feel while remaining traditional.” Joyanne Horscroft at Makerie Studio, said: “The Studio has always been inspired by rare antiquities and beautiful details and this project presented a unique challenge. It was a real labour of love and mimicked the relationship that Mount Street Printers has with their machines. They spend months restoring and re-assembling each press to ensure they maintain the integrity of the machines. Similarly, we carefully brought this sculpture to life assembling each cog, button and component made out of paper. “When we started designing, the colour palette was incredibly important as a starting point. We wanted to make sure we were able to reflect the heritage of Mount Street Printers, but also their continued relevance today. Being able to work with a broad range of Fedrigoni materials was really exciting. We worked with the papers in various tones, weights and textures depending on the surface or detail to be created and everything pulled together wonderfully.” ‘Make Your Mark’ will be on view at Mount Street Printers, 4 Mount St, Mayfair, London W1K 3LW until 1st June, 2021. www.mountstreetprinters.com • www.fedrigoni.co.uk • www.makeriestudio.com

GREEN ISSUES
THE PAPER INDUSTRY ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION Two Sides’ latest study ‘Paper’s Place in a Post-Pandemic World’ aims to understand changing consumer perceptions towards print, paper, paper packaging and tissue products. This unique insight into consumer attitudes towards one of the world’s oldest and universally used materials will be repeated biennially to monitor and report upon evolving consumer perceptions as environmental awareness intensifies and alternative digital channels of communication become prevalent. Results of the 2021 study show that, whilst paper retains its place as a vital communication and packaging materials, there remain misconceptions about the environmental impact of the paper industry.
CONSUMERS ARE NOT AWARE THAT EUROPEAN FORESTS ARE GROWING
The study found that consumers still believe forests are decreasing in size, with 59% of UK consumers believing that European forests are shrinking. In reality, between 2005 and 2020, European forests grew by an impressive 58,390km2 – an area larger than Switzerland and equivalent to 1,500 football pitches of forest growth every day. Other findings from the survey relating to forest growth include: • Just 9% of UK consumers understand that European forests are growing. • 18-24 year olds (Gen Z) have the highest belief that forests are shrinking (69%). • Although more people believe forests are growing (9% compared to 4% in 2013), there is still a significant gap in understanding. The high recycling rates for paper and paper packaging are not appreciated. Another common misconception about the paper industry is the amount of paper that’s recycled. The survey found that just 17% of UK consumers believe the paper recycling rate exceeds 60%. Furthermore, 46% believe that paper and paper packaging is wasteful. In reality, Europe’s paper recycling rate is currently 72%, with paper packaging even higher at 84%. • In 2019, a total of 57.5 million tonnes of paper was collected and recycled in Europe. • 18-24 year olds have the biggest misconception relating to recycling, with just 12% believing the paper recycling rate exceeds 60%. • 66% of consumers think only recycled paper should be used.
PAPER VS ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION
The past year has accelerated the growth of electronic communication, with meetings, events and day-to-day business increasingly being conducted online and consumers relying more on online news. While convenience and the ability for people to work at home are undoubtedly key drivers in this shift, the environmental impact of digital communications is often overlooked. Paper and print products are among the lowest greenhouse gas emitters at 0.8% whereas, the ICT industry accounts for 2.5-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and this is predicted to rise to 14% by 2040. Despite this, 66% of consumers surveyed in our report think electronic communication is more environmentally friendly than paper communication. “This report shows there are many environmental misconceptions surrounding print and paper products,” says Jonathan Tame, Managing Director of Two Sides Europe. “Many
26
consumers believe that European forests are shrinking in size, massively underestimate the paper recycling rate, and do not understand the sustainable nature of paper products. These misunderstandings make the work we do with Two Sides and Love Paper even more vital.” To find out more about the Two Sides campaign, and how you can become a supporter visit: www.twosides.info

NEW PROFIT CENTRE
MORE THAN JUST PROFIT WITH NCR PADS All quick print pros love to be in at the start of all new businesses. Sometimes we get to input design ideas, corporate ID and best print practice for start-ups, what fun to share our experience with newbies. Never has it been more important for us QPPs to touch new business and find ways to offer printing services at the onset. We have been offered marketing assistance from Damon at NCR PADS in the form of a sample NCR set to show off. The base artwork is free, and you can choose size and colour options. Decide on how many sheets; our own shop has invested in 2500 A5 2-part loose sets. Just add your own print shop details to the sample artwork and check out the trade website for quantities and prices. QPP hard copy subscribers will receive a sample in this magazine for a tactile appraisal and information to prospect your existing customers as well as the many new businesses starting up now. If you are missing yours download here along with your artwork template. http://files.colourfast.co.uk/files/Your%20 Logo%20Here%20NCR%20Pads.pdf http://files.colourfast.co.uk/files/image%20 1%20.jpg Familiarise yourselves with what types of business match NCR pads, NCR books and NCR sets. Also continuous stationery and desk pads. Optional extras include drilled holes for filing, numbering for invoices and despatch receipts. Consider perforation when suppling pads. Aim to get good at this as NCR PADS open doors. Don’t have too many preconceived ideas on who uses what as everyone knows everyone else and may pass your sample onto a colleague, friend, family member or a new start business they are working with. www.ncrpads.co.uk • Tel. 0330 111 5040
BEST PRACTICE SET IN PRINT
So, with our shop branded NCR leaflets we are ready to market, not just looking for NCR business but knowing that whenever we get proactive, business opportunities are received for our whole print product range. Try to sell labels and end up with an order for a run of posters! Drop a couple of your new print samples in with your invoicing, add to the bags and boxes your customers receive their print in. Leaflet drop to local businesses, follow your hunch, when you have a positive run of say plumbers, stick a couple under the windscreen wipers of sign written vans. Leave a few in the burger bar where a lot of your customers flyers end up. Do something different, I have left personalised pens on a bank counter and gained work. Yes, there is some stony ground out there that is why we play the same numbers game our customers thankfully practice. Order some samples and get marketing, what’s the worst that can happen? The only guarantee is that if you do nothing, then nothing will happen.

HAMPTON PRINTING BUYS A TITANIUM 2516 CAD CUTTER
Hampton Printing, the Bristol based multi-award winning printer, whose clients include luxury car marques, fashion, lifestyle brands, and luxury retailers, has chosen the Titanium Digital CAD Cutting Table from International Graphic Supplies who are a Monmouthshire based machinery supplier, to further its growth in the packaging and wide format sectors. Mike Malpas, Managing Director at Hampton comments, ‘’One of our goals for 2021 is to continue to expand our portfolio of packaging and wide format services. It was therefore vital that we acquired a Digital CAD table with multiple functionalities and high precision. IGS demonstrated the capabilities of the Titanium Series, and through consultation we focused on the Titanium 2516 Conveyor model’’ Peter Flynn, Managing Director IGS comments on the installation ‘’Hampton Printing has the highest reputation for print precision and quality, having listened to their requirements we felt the Titanium 2516 would be the perfect fit. Included in the 2516 model are a wide variety of tools including, drag knife and multiple creasing wheels for packaging prototypes, oscillating knife for heavier substrates such as corrugated boards and Foamex, and a Kiss cutting tool for labels and stickers. We can also offer a routing tool with extraction, which we are able to retro fit to the 2516 when Hampton has the requirement to cut Dibond or Acrylic in the future’’ Mike Malpas continued ‘’The Titanium 2516 has already allowed us to offer an innovative range of packaging prototypes, both for existing and new customers. We are also able to satisfy short run cut/crease and kiss cutting productions, which complements our small format digital capabilities. The large cutting bed at 2.5 x 1.6m metres includes a conveyor belt system, and we are now able to offer a range of wide format products including wall/floor and window graphics. An added bonus was that the high precision drag knife allows us to cut our Heidelberg Litho Coating blankets to create intricate varnish areas’’. Peter Flynn IGS “I’m very pleased to see Hampton are already enjoying the many benefits of moving to a Titanium cutter. As Mike identified our price / performance is hard to match, and this powerful combination is allowing us to building a very impressive portfolio of customers. Our showroom is also busy with online demonstrations for prospects looking to invest, in a Digital Cutter and UV Flatbed Printer, to meet their customers’ requirements for short run packaging and social distancing signage.” www.igs-digital.com • www.hampton-printing.co.uk

NEW PROFIT CENTRE
PROSPER WITH DIGITAL TEXTILE PRINTING
MENUS FOR EVERY MEAL
Tayprint recently opted for Kornit’s DTG technology and effectively replaced the use of screen printing within their operation, reducing their cost per print while making short runs profitable, eliminating inventory and resource waste, speeding production, and ensuring nearly unlimited design capabilities. While Tayprint predominantly serves as a provider of large format digital printing, delivering approximately 500,000 square metres of imprinted product annually, they had established a screen printing operation as well, generating roughly £200,000 in t-shirt sales per year. While this provided a strong profit channel, screens offered limited growth potential, as order volumes were shrinking, customers demanded quick turnaround, graphic capabilities were limited, and setting up was a drain on both labour and materials. Each of these drawbacks are addressed by Kornit’s on-demand digital production technology, which enables suppliers to imprint apparel in any quantity, using a single step process, completing the process in mere minutes. “James Miller, General Manager at Tayprint comments: “The finished garment has terrific hand feel, for a better product that’s easy to sell to our customers. With this fast, efficient digital technology in place, we expect to expand this part of our business, and have produced a model to integrate with online business start-ups, which would’ve been a poor fit for screen based print operations.” www.kornit.com

LINCOLN PRINT & COPY CENTRE INSTALL LANDSCAPE BOOKLETMAKER Following the investment in a Xerox V280 printer to enhance their digital printing, Lincoln Print & Copy Centre installed a KAS K640 bookletmaking system from Ashgate Automation to meet the demand for short run A4 landscape booklets. “We pride ourselves in being creative and finding solutions for our customers’ requirements but this was one area that we were unable to satisfy,” said Karen Arnold, Director. “For many years we have produced short run A3 folded to A4 booklets as well as A5 and A6 formats. However, we have had to turn down requests for short run A4 landscape booklets. Unless it was a reasonable run of over a hundred copies, it was not viable for us to outsource the job.” Following the installation of the Xerox V280 and the KAS K640 bookletmaker, they had the facility to print and finish landscape booklets with covers from about five to a hundred plus copies in house. Karen knew the Kasfold bookletmaker and Ashgate from experience and
30
reputation. “We had one of their bookletmakers when my parents were running the company. I looked on their website and saw a video of the K640 being demonstrated, read the specification and knew that it was the right machine for our needs. I didn’t need to visit their showroom because I had confidence in the company. As for its features, physically it is quite compact which is important because space is at a premium. The K640, unlike some other models I researched, is affordably priced, ensuring that we can produce short runs profitably.” The installation went very smoothly with everybody being trained to use the machine. They had two jobs ready for it from local estate agents who wanted their brochures to stand out from the crowd. “It is ideal for this type of work, not only because of the format it can handle but because it finishes a range of stock including coated, uncoated or silk. We recommend 250gsm for the cover and 160gsm for the inside pages,” said Karen. “We look after the printing requirements for a wide range of businesses within a fifty mile radius. The initial interest has convinced us that we have found a gap in the marketplace for A4 landscape booklets and look forward to this investment bringing in new business.” www.ashgate.co.uk

FRUITY JOKE
Doctor: You have a disease, but we can treat it. Patient: What’s the Cure? Doctor: It’s an ’80s rock band fronted by Robert Smith, but let’s try to stay focused...
A squirrel was sitting in an apple tree. All of a sudden, a cow started climbing up the tree. Surprised to see a climbing cow the squirrel asked the newcomer, “What the heck are you doing here?” The cow replied, “I thought I’d eat some oranges.” “But this is an apple tree.” “I know. I brought my own.”
FOOT PILL
DATING CHICKENS
YOU HAVE A DISEASE
A man goes to the doctor with a swollen foot. After a careful examination, the doctor gives the man a pill big enough to choke a horse. “I’ll be right back with some water,” the doctor tells him. The doctor has been gone a while and the man loses patience. He hobbles out to the drinking fountain, forces the pill down his throat and gobbles down water until the pill clears his throat. He hobbles back into the examining room. Just then the doctor comes back with a bucket of warm water, “Okay, after the tablet dissolves, soak that foot for about 20 minutes.”
BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT
I went to Buckingham Palace yesterday to cut Prince William’s hair. As I pulled up to the gates I said to the policeman; “Can you let me into the car park please, I’m here to cut Prince William’s hair.” “Have you got a permit?” asked the officer. “No mate,” I replied, “I’m just taking a bit off the back and the sides”
SOCIAL DINER
Someone knocked at my door last evening. When I opened it, I saw a guy from Domino’s holding a chicken pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and onion rings. “I haven’t ordered any pizza,” I said. “This must be a mistake.” “No, it’s not,” he replied. “Your neighbour forgot his Facebook password and wanted to show you what he was eating for dinner.”
“Have you got anything to drink?”
I used to run a dating agency for chickens but I was struggling to make hens meet!
YOUR ROUND
Two men walk into a bar. The first guy says he wants some H2O. The second guy says he wants some H2O too. The second guy died.
GROW UP
My wife told me I was immature. So, I told her to get out of my pillow fort.
HEARING PROBLEM
I went to the doctor with hearing problems. He said, “Can you describe the symptoms?” I said, “Homer’s the big dude and Marge has blue hair...”
THE DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATION A woman who lived next door to a priest was puzzled by his personality change in the pulpit. At home he was shy, quiet and retiring but in the church he was a real fire and brimstone orator, rousing the masses in the name of God. It was as if he was two different people. One day she asked him about the dramatic transformation that came over him when he preached. “Ah,” he said, “that’s my altar ego.”
SHELL SHOCK
A truckload of tortoises crashed into a trainload of terrapins. It was a turtle disaster.
“Water.”
LATEST DICTIONARY ADDITIONS
ADULT: A person who has stopped growing at both ends and is now growing in the middle. BEAUTY PARLOUR: A place where women curl up and dye. CHICKENS: The only animals you eat before they are born and after they are dead. COMMITTEE: A body that keeps minutes and wastes hours. DUST: Mud with the juice squeezed out. EGOTIST: Someone who is usually me-deep in conversation. HANDKERCHIEF: Cold Storage. INFLATION: Cutting money in half without damaging the paper. MOSQUITO: An insect that makes you like flies better. RAISIN: A grape with a sunburn. SECRET: Something you tell to one person at a time. SKELETON: A bunch of bones with the person scraped off.
THREE VAMPIRES WALK INTO A BAR
Three vampires walk into a bar. The bartender looks at them suspiciously but decides to serve them anyway. “What’ll it be, boys?” The first vampire says, “Blood. Give me blood.” The second vampire says, “I too wish for blood!” The third vampire says, “Give me plasma.” The Bartender smiles and says, “Got it. Two bloods and one blood-light.”
THIS JOKE IS OFFAL
“Today,” said the professor, “I will be lecturing about the kidneys, intestines, pancreas, and the liver.” One med student leaned toward his friend sitting next to him, “Great, we have to sit through another organ recital.”
WORK THIS OUT
My favourite exercise is a cross between a lunge and a crunch. It’s called lunch.
“I meant something harder?”
“Ice.”
