Why create a heavy carbon footprint taking flights abroad when the UK has sights to rival some of the world’s finest destinations?

There is no escaping it, we Brit’s do love foreign travel, despite increased concern about the impact of flying. Many of us compile lists of places we would like to see, almost like a bucket list – seeing the Northern Lights in the Arctic or walking the Great Wall of China and visiting Niagara Falls. But we may be missing out on sights around the UK which can actually rival these. Here are just a few alternative wonders of the UK - Closer to Home!

Fancy driving Route 66? Drive the North Coast 500 instead. Deserted beaches, artisan distilleries, lochs, castles and wildlife await on the North Coast 500. More than enough to rival the famous Route 66. The Scottish alternative is a 516 mile scenic route along the country’s northern coast, beginning and ending in Inverness, which is the capital of the Highlands. Must do - stop into a Scottish pub for delicious food, paticularly neeps and haggis. Do you want to walk the Great Wall of China? Then try Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Wall has arguably has just as rich a history as it’s Chinese equivalent. Originally 73 miles long, it was built to guard the wild north west frontier of the Roman empire. Today, its

National trail path stretches 84 miles coast to coast from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend.

Is Niagara Falls on your wish list? Marvel at Pistyll Rhaeadr. Another dream destination is Niagara Falls - on the boarder between Canada and the US, 3000 miles away from the UK. You will have a much lower carbon footprint travelling to the truly impressive Pistyll Rhaeadr in the Berwyn mountains, in Powys, Wales. At 80m it is Britain’s tallest single-drop waterfall - nearly 30m taller than Niagara Falls!

Is the Grand Canyon too far? Visit Cheddar Gorge instead. Not only is Cheddar Gorge a great destination in itself, but visitors can expect to see more flora and fauna than they would in Arizona’s Grand Canyon. At almost 400 feet deep and 3 miles long, this is England’s largest gorge. It is one of the country’s most remarkable natural sights.

Dreaming of Cherry Blossom in Japan? Then don’t miss Worcestershire’s Blossom Trail. This home-grown wonder is truly enchanting and a great place for a romantic weekend. The blossom can be enjoyed from March to May when 3000 acres of orchards burst into bloom. See and smell scented white plum and damson flowers, followed by white pear and pink apple, simply by driving along the 45 mile Blossom trail.
