Why create a heavy carbon footprint taking flights abroad when the UK has sights to rival some of the world’s finest destinations? There is no escaping it, we Brit’s do love foreign travel, despite increased concern about the impact of flying. Many of us compile lists of places we would like to see, almost like a bucket list – seeing the Northern Lights in the Arctic or walking the Great Wall of China and visiting Niagara Falls. But we may be missing out on sights around the UK which can actually rival these. Here are just a few alternative wonders of the UK - Closer to Home! Fancy driving Route 66? Drive the North Coast 500 instead. Deserted beaches, artisan distilleries, lochs, castles and wildlife await on the North Coast 500. More than enough to rival the famous Route 66. The Scottish alternative is a 516 mile scenic route along the country’s northern coast, beginning and ending in Inverness, which is the capital of the Highlands. Must do - stop into a Scottish pub for delicious food, paticularly neeps and haggis. 30
Do you want to walk the Great Wall of China? Then try Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Wall has arguably has just as rich a history as it’s Chinese equivalent. Originally 73 miles long, it was built to guard the wild north west frontier of the Roman empire. Today, its WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022
