WELCOME... To a brand New Year! Here is what we have in store to kick start 2022... Firstly, New Beginnings, led by Anthony Blay and Holme Grange Craft Village’s wedding suppliers, for that ‘’1 Fabulous Day’’. Then we have an introduction to the iconic mansion house - South Hill Park, which inspires us with an arts centre, wedding venue and more. And, talking of inspiration - Mantle invite us to explore their serviced offices at Innovation House where the new challenges of today are met head on. With MT Millar’s innovative furniture and Darren at Mulgari Cars giving us ‘5 mins with...’ interview, it is certainly all happening over on Molly Millars Lane, which is quite the business hub of Wokingham, just 2 minutes out of town. Our ‘New Year, New You’ feature has everything from health, skincare, beauty, fitness, nutrition and diet, an introduction to mindfulness, and to top it all, a healthy, nutritious and delicious ramen recipe sent in by Martin and Jane, helping us to ‘Eat Well to Stay Well’, and boost our immune systems. Please do keep your recipes coming, and editorial features for that matter, as we have a wealth of talent within our local community and we always appreciate your contributions. To this effect, we hear once again from a wide range of our local schools and an insight into what new avenues they are exploring, and the new heights they are acheiving. Last, but not least, during February we will be celebrating Chinese New Year, with traditions, food, and what it all means for those born in the Year of the Tiger! I hope you enjoy this New Year issue of Wokingham Local magazine, and it just remains for me to say from myself and all the team at Wokingham Local, we wish you a very merry, propserous and happy New Year.

Meet Wokingham Local’s feature article Interior Designer – Jessica Cox, of Jessica Cox Design Ltd

Japandi

Being thousands of miles apart, you may not think that Japan and Scandinavia have a lot in common, but when it comes to design elements - they are more similar than you may think. They both focus on simplicity and functionality, natural elements, comfort and a high value on craftsmanship. Therefore, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing more and more designers combine the two looks together – which creates the design trend “Japandi” (aka Japanese and Scandi). What Is Japandi Design? Japandi design is the combination of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese rustic minimalism to create a feeling of nature and simplicity. This fusion creates the perfect blend of function and form, focusing on clean lines, bright spaces, and light colours. What Are the Elements of Japandi? Japandi focuses on simple design that is aesthetically pleasing, but always highly functional. Expect to find lots of natural materials, muted colours, clean lines and minimal (yet carefully selected) furniture and artwork. Neutral colours and paint choices will typically complement Japandi furniture and accessories. Colours are chosen to be calming and when brighter colours are incorporated - they are done so meaningfully and subtly. Japandi style features beautiful craftsmanship and sustainability with a focus on quality and handmade pieces. It is tradition in Japan to disassemble and replace broken parts of an object or piece of furniture – rather than to throw away – which helps to make Japandi a very ‘ecofriendly’ style. Japanese and Scandinavian Working Together The Scandinavian concept of “Hygge” (creating a feeling of cosiness at home) is combined with the Japanese notion of “wabi-sabi,” (the idea that there is beauty in imperfection) to create Japandi style. Japanese and Scandinavian design styles work so well together because they are both focussed on minimalism and comfort - therefore creating a sophisticated, yet relaxed style. 17

Even where the two styles can seem opposite, the differences complement each other. Japanese interiors are sleek, Nordic ones are rustic. The richer (but still neutral) colours of Japanese design will help keep the stark, crisp palettes of Scandinavian homes from feeling cold. How to incorporate Japandi Style at home l U se natural materials such as unfinished woods or bamboo pieces. l U se muted colours with hints of pale green or blue. l U sing lots of plants and greenery inside your home. l Focus on clean lines and open spaces. l R educe clutter. Use natural containers such as boxes and baskets, built-in units or folding screens to keep your space feeling calm. l I nvest in quality pieces that will last – focus on the craftsmanship. To get the best of both worlds, draw on the cosiness of Scandi design with warm textures and soft pieces - while maintaining the elegance of Japanese decor. 18

SERVICED OFFICES Solve Workplace Challenges Working with small businesses at our Business Centre in Wokingham, we’ve seen another year of challenges- from last winter’s lockdown to ‘back to work’. Even those who enjoy the flexibility of home working are craving normality. Many have struggled with the challenges of children, noise, distraction, loneliness and low productivity. Office life provides a hub for exciting ideas to flourish and just makes communication easier. As a result, 2021 was the year demand for serviced offices skyrocketed, although in a less 9-5 sense, with flexible working days and hours. Self-employed people and small businesses want a better place to work, but also need easy 24/7 access. Flexible terms and shorter contracts are a must: renting either a serviced office or a shared hotdesking room gives them that. We’ve also seen an interesting new development with bigger companies funding their ‘working from home’ staff to use serviced offices locally to their homes it’s a cost saving compared to the type of pricey long lease space they are used to. We’re seeing a similar trend with meeting rooms, as bookings increase again. Zoom 24

meetings had their well-publicised challenges. People missed the buzz and interaction of a real life meeting, as well as the huge technical advantages of a fully equipped meeting room. Face-to-face meetings remove so many frustrating hurdles. The conclusion seems to be that the number of unnecessary meetings has been cut, but that the essential ones are now even more important to get right. 2022 is going to consolidate this hybrid of remote and physical working environments for companies and the individuals who work for them. Serviced offices and meeting room hire will remain an important part of that picture. Five Minutes With: Darren Boorman – Owner of Mulgari Cars Like my Grandfather used to say... “If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly’’ Just remind me, who and what are Mulgari? D: Mulgari is Myself, My Wife Vicky, Our two boys Morgan and Austin and our Garage dog Enzo, We aim to provide the best garage experience in Wokingham, from the simplest of repairs and advice to full overhauls, rebuilds and project cars. Do I take it you have always loved cars, from being young? D: Well, I grew up in Kent in my families garage which has been around for generations, Previously a Blacksmiths forge so we looked after all kinds of machinery from classics to new age, so really anything mechanical is very much my forte, I grew up surrounded by motorsport too and so from 28

a very young age I was naturally involved initially as pit crew and later behind the wheel myself so I guess you could say I live and breathe it, I’ve trained with Bosch and became a Bosch master technician and have also been a contractor for the likes of McLaren, Ferrari, and Aston Martin over the years and am still operating within the motorsport industry as a number 1 race technician, Engineer and coach amongst many other side projects for a number of clients. What is your all time favorite car? D: I have quite a few as I’ve been fortunate enough to work on many of them. My favourite classic is the Jaguar E-Type, my favourite Piece of technological engineering is the McLaren P1, and my favourite all-rounder is the Audi RS4 estate. You have young boys? Are they into cars? D: Yes both of my boys are interested , my youngest wants to “Race like Daddy” and my eldest wants to WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022

“Fix and build cars like Daddy” so it seems they have me covered. And, what is a Petrol Head? I see you have Gift vouchers for sale - for the ‘’petrol head’’ in your life! D: We have a great diversity in our existing client base, from neighbours in our local community, to many who travel from all corners of the UK for our “Mulgari Magic” and its very personal touch. Are you still offering FREE winter health checks for new customers’ cars? D: Yes, our FREE winter health checks are available to everyone until the close of business on Christmas eve 2021 and will commence again on Tuesday 4th January. What have you learned over the past couple of years that you will take with you? D: That when it really matters our local community spirit in Wokingham and Bracknell is as strong as ever and contributing to our local community is very rewarding on a personal level. The best piece of advice you have ever been given? D: My Grandfather used to say to me all the time, “No matter who the individual is, treat everyone with

the respect and courtesy you would expect to receive in return’’ and ‘’if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing properly!’’ Hence our mantras “carsdoneright” and “yourcaryourway” What’s your New Year’s resolution? D: To do even better with our business, so that we can invest in and do more for our wonderful local community, and to get our Mulgari training academy up and running to offer some basic car maintenance and care classes to our awesome clients who would like to learn more about their own vehicles and be able to carry out some basic maintenance and repairs at home.

ECO-FRIENDLY TRAVEL CLOSER TO HOME!

Why create a heavy carbon footprint taking flights abroad when the UK has sights to rival some of the world’s finest destinations? There is no escaping it, we Brit’s do love foreign travel, despite increased concern about the impact of flying. Many of us compile lists of places we would like to see, almost like a bucket list – seeing the Northern Lights in the Arctic or walking the Great Wall of China and visiting Niagara Falls. But we may be missing out on sights around the UK which can actually rival these. Here are just a few alternative wonders of the UK - Closer to Home! Fancy driving Route 66? Drive the North Coast 500 instead. Deserted beaches, artisan distilleries, lochs, castles and wildlife await on the North Coast 500. More than enough to rival the famous Route 66. The Scottish alternative is a 516 mile scenic route along the country’s northern coast, beginning and ending in Inverness, which is the capital of the Highlands. Must do - stop into a Scottish pub for delicious food, paticularly neeps and haggis. 30

Do you want to walk the Great Wall of China? Then try Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Wall has arguably has just as rich a history as it’s Chinese equivalent. Originally 73 miles long, it was built to guard the wild north west frontier of the Roman empire. Today, its WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022

National trail path stretches 84 miles coast to coast from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend. Is Niagara Falls on your wish list? Marvel at Pistyll Rhaeadr. Another dream destination is Niagara Falls on the boarder between Canada and the US, 3000 miles away from the UK. You will have a much lower carbon footprint travelling to the truly impressive Pistyll Rhaeadr in the Berwyn mountains, in Powys, Wales. At 80m it is Britain’s tallest single-drop waterfall - nearly 30m taller than Niagara Falls! Is the Grand Canyon too far? Visit Cheddar Gorge instead. Not only is Cheddar Gorge a great destination in itself, but visitors can expect to see more flora and fauna than they would in Arizona’s Grand Canyon. At almost 400 feet deep and 3 miles long, this is England’s largest gorge. It is one of the country’s most remarkable natural sights. Dreaming of Cherry Blossom in Japan? Then don’t miss Worcestershire’s Blossom Trail. This home-grown wonder is truly enchanting and a great place for a romantic weekend. The blossom can be enjoyed from March to May when 3000 acres of orchards burst into bloom. See and smell scented white plum and damson flowers, followed by white pear and pink apple, simply by driving along the 45 mile Blossom trail. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022

CHINESE YEAR OF THE

TIGER

Born in the Year of the Tiger? 1938 / 1950 / 1962 / 1974 / 1986 / 1998 / 2010 / 2022 Tigers are courageous and active people who love a good challenge and adventure in life. Like their eponymous zodiac animal, people born in years of the Tiger are vigorous and ambitious, daring and courageous, enthusiastic and generous, self-confident with a sense of justice and a commitment to help others for the greater good.

Personality

People born in years of the Tiger are fiercely independent and possess strong self-esteem. They like to act alone and are not very gregarious. They are most likely optimistic and enthusiastic by nature, and always seem to have endless energy, especially at work. Their energetic presence and intense eyes are the greatest charm of Tiger natives. Their vitality is apparent to anyone at a glance, and people are instinctively drawn to this larger than life quality in them. Tigers are lively and cheerful, and they love freedom and independence. They are a zodiac sign that absolutely must have their personal space. Tigers usually have a keen sense of justice.

34

When faced with injustices, whether against themselves or others, you can be sure Tigers will not stand aside. In general, Tigers possess great tenacity. They are loyal, quick and the center of attention in everything they do. However, a king needs a domain to be truly in possession of their power. For any Tiger, male or female, their ambition will come before they allow themselves a break to enjoy other parts of life.

Strengths

Tigers are courageous and authoritative, although they have a cute and charming side as well to those who know them more intimately. Their ambitions run sky-high, however, and Tigers will never treat them as pipe dreams. They are adventurers with the courage to be a pioneer in the line of work they choose. They work tirelessly to realize their dream of changing the world in some way, one step at a time.

Weaknesses

Tigers can be very rebellious, often too self-confident to want to coordinate or communicate with others.

Chinese 2022 Pan Fried Dumplings Method Shiitake Mushrooms: Place the mushrooms in a bowl and pour over plenty of boiled water. Leave for 20 minutes or until rehydrated. Squeeze out excess water, then finely chop. Cabbage: Place cabbage in a bowl with salt. Toss with fingers, then set aside for 15 minutes. Squeeze out excess liquid from cabbage using hands. Filling: Place cabbage, mushrooms and remaining Filling ingredients in a bowl. Mix with your hands until well combined.

The most popular food eaten at Chinese New Year. These irresistible plump dumplings are pan fried then steamed so they’re golden crispy on the underside with a juicy filling.

Ingredients 5 - 6 dried shiitake mushrooms (or any other mushrooms) 1 ½ cups finely chopped Chinese cabbage ½ tsp salt 250 g / 0.5 lb fatty pork mince (20 - 30%) ¼ cup garlic chives , finely chopped 2 tsp light soy sauce (dark soy is also ok) 1 1/2 tsp Chinese wine (or white wine) ½ tsp sesame oil ¼ tsp white pepper 1 garlic clove , minced ½ tsp grated fresh ginger TO COOK: 30 - 35 round dumpling wrappers 1/2 cup water per batch 4 - 6 tsp vegetable oil WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022

To make the dumplings Peel one wrapper off and place on the palm of your left hand (if right handed). Dip your finger in water and run it along half the edge of the wrapper. l Place 1 heaped tablespoon of Filling in the centre. Fold wrapper over, then pleat to seal. Alternatively, just press together with no pleats. l Place on tray. Cover with cling wrap or wet tea towel. Repeat with remaining dumplings. Should make 25 to 30. l

Cooking Make sure your pan has a lid that fits well. Heat 2 tsp oil in a non stick pan over medium high heat. Add dumplings, pressing down firmly to flatten the base onto the pan. Cook around 8 to 10 per batch. l When the base is golden brown (check them), add 1/2 cup of water into the pan. l Immediately clamp the lid on, then leave for 7 minutes (any less and the pleats won’t be cooked through so if your water dries out, add a bit more). l Remove lid - most of the water should be evaporated, the pleats should be cooked through. Leave the pan on the stove until the base dries and the underside of the dumplings are once again crisp. l Remove dumplings from pan and transfer to serving plate. Repeat with remaining Dumplings. l Serve with Dipping Sauces of choice. l

How much do you know about Chinese New Year? It’s celebrated by more than 20% of the world and is the most important holiday in China and to Chinese people all over the world. Here are a few interesting facts that you maybe didn’t know...

Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival

In China, you’ll hear it being called chunjie or the Spring Festival. It’s still very wintry, but the holiday marks the end of the coldest days. People welcome spring and what it brings along - planting and harvests, new beginnings and fresh starts. It is also called the Lunar New Year, because countries such as North and South Korea and Vietnam celebrate it as well. And because the Spring Festival goes according to the lunar calendar, which means there’s no set date for Chinese New Year Chinese New Year ranges from January 21 to February 20. In 2022, it occurs on February 1st.

It is a day for praying to gods

The Spring Festival was originally a ceremonial day to pray to gods for a good planting and harvest season. As an agrarian society, the harvest was everything. People also prayed to their ancestors, as they were treated as gods.

Food offerings are made to the gods and fighting off monsters

But the myths are much more interesting. According to one legend, there was a monster named Nian. It would come about every New Year’s Eve. Most people would hide in their homes. But one boy was brave enough to fight him off using firecrackers. The next day, people celebrated their survival by setting off even more firecrackers. And that practice became a crucial part of the Spring Festival.

The most fireworks are set off in the world that night

As in the myth about Nian, firecrackers are supposed to scare off monsters and bad luck. So people stay up on Chinese New Year’s Eve and set off firecrackers 36

at midnight. In the morning, firecrackers are used again to welcome the new year and good luck. That same night, families also burn fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of their deceased loved ones. Similar to the Korean Chuseok holiday or the Mexican Day of the Dead traditions, they believe the offerings will bring fortune and good luck to their ancestors in the afterlife.

It is the longest Chinese holiday

The Spring Festival is technically 15 days. But celebrations start on New Year’s Eve (making it 16 days). You can also say that the holiday season starts in (lunar) December with the Laba Festival. That’s around 40 days of celebrations!

Children receive lucky money in red envelopes

In other cultures, children receive gifts for holidays. Gifts are also exchanged during the Spring Festival. But Chinese children receive something else too – red envelopes, Chinese New Year red pockets with lucky money. Depending on the family, the children can get up 1000 CNY (around £200) per envelope. This money is supposed to help transfer fortune from the elders to the kids. They can also be given between bosses and employees, co-workers, and friends. With the development of technology, digital red pockets are the trend now. People like to send one into group chats and watch the others fight for the money. This is called qiang hongbao, or literally “snatching red pockets.”

You eat dumplings for every meal, every day

Well, technically you’re supposed to. But not many people do that anymore because you can have too much of even the most delicious foods. So most people will eat dumplings during the New Year’s Eve dinner. Others will eat them for the first breakfast. Contrary to popular belief though, dumplings aren’t popular everywhere in China. It’s more of a northern thing. In the South, people would rather eat spring rolls (egg rolls) and balls of glutinous rice in soup called tangyuan. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022

The Chinese decorate everything red for Chinese New Year

Every family will deck their homes in this color. Do you remember the story about Nian? Firecrackers aren’t the only thing that scared the monster away. Red is also an invaluable weapon, and used in nearly all Chinese New Year decorations.

Red is China’s favorite color

And it’s pretty obvious during Chinese New Year. The Chinese will hang up red lanterns and strings of (real or fake) chili peppers, paste red paper onto doors and windows, and more! New clothes are also believed to bring good luck and start over fresh. People will add new red clothing to their Spring Festival wardrobe too.

Every year has a zodiac animal

Western horoscopes include 12 zodiacs, one for each month. There are 12 Chinese zodiacs as well, but the animal is for the entire year. They are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig and 2022 is the Year of the Tiger.

Chinese New Year colorful lanterns

Lanterns come in all shapes, sizes and colors. In ancient times, girls weren’t allowed to venture outside by themselves. But on this night, they were able to walk around, moon-gaze and look at the beautiful lanterns. Because of this, it’s also known as Valentine’s Day in China.

Chinese New Year is celebrated all around the world One out of every 5 people in the world is Chinese. But that stat doesn’t include the millions of overseas Chinese and people of Chinese descent.

If you get the chance, make sure you go and check out any local parades, lion dances, lantern statues, fireworks and amazing food! WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022

Beginners Mindfulness The simple practice of mindfulness has been around for thousands of years; Mindfulness is meant to be simple, yet a profound way to live. So, what exactly is mindfulness and how do you apply it? Mindfulness is a specific form of meditation or simply put - awareness of the moment. Mindfulness involves directly participating in each moment as it occurs with complete awareness of your present experience. Life only exists in the Here and Now when practicing mindfulness. Some simple, but effective Mindfulness Exercises are: Candle Meditation - this is great when we need some peace and quiet and only needs a quiet, darkened room and a candle. Sit in a comfortable position and focus on the flame not pondering on the chemical reactions as the candle burns - but instead simply focus on the candle in a pure way. Eating Meditation - take a minute to savour the food we eat it. Look at the meal, smell it, feel the textures as we chew it and notice how it tastes. This exercise doesn’t have to be used through the whole meal - just occasionally. Take a Mindful break - instead of checking emails etc in our break, we should take some time to notice the sensations in our body and mind - listen to the sounds we can hear, feel our heart beating and be present in our body for a few moments, letting go of everything we are thinking about.

38

Mindful walking - we can take at least 15 minutes a day to walk in a quiet, peaceful environment, listening to all the sounds around us and focusing on the present - focus on the thud of our feet on the ground and the rhythm of our breath. When we’re walking in the wood, we should listen to the birds chirping, the trees rustling and the leaves crackling under our feet. It is easier to focus on these simple sounds first when we have problems concentrating, focus on the feeling. There is a saying, “yesterday is in the past, tomorrow is the future but today, this precise moment, is a gift and that is why it is called the present.” This present is in our possession, but it has a rapidly approaching expiry date. If you can learn to enjoy all of it, that will be enough, and it will last your whole lifetime. Now, take a moment for a mindful break… Richard Welch www.richardsyoga.org

Chicken Ramen

Eat Well to Stay Well this Winter, with a quick and easy Chicken Ramen dish - sent in by Martin & Jane. Ingredients

Method

1 tbsp of sesame oil 1 tbsp of fresh ginger, grated 1 tbsp of garlic, grated 1 litre of good quality hot chicken stock 1 handful fresh spinach 2 tsp soya sauce 2 tsp mirin 180 g or 2 servings of noodles, cooked as per packet instructions 2 chicken fillets, pan fried and thinly sliced 4-5 large leaves of pak choi sliced from top bottom and tossed in a hot pan for a minute or two ( you don’t want to over cook them) 2 eggs Chopped fresh red chilli Chopped fresh coriander Salt to season and Japanese Chilli Pepper (Nanami Togarashi)

Heat a large saucepan over a medium/low heat, add the oil, ginger and garlic, stir for a minute taking care not to let either burn. Pour in the hot chicken stock, soya sauce and mirin then simmer for 10-15 mins. While the broth is simmering bring a pan of water to the boil, you should have just enough water to cover an egg. Place the two eggs in the pan and cook for 7 mins for soft and 8 for a little firmer. Place them into a bowl of iced water for around 5 minutes to cool them and stop them cooking so you can easily peel them. If your noodles are cold reheat them by placing them in a colander and pouring boiling water over them, then place them in a bowl, pour ladles of the broth over then arrange the chicken, spinach, pak choi and the egg sliced in half. Garnish with the fresh red chilli, coriander and a good sprinkle of Japenese chilli pepper or use sriracha if you have it. And enjoy hot nourishing Chicken ramen!

DRY JANUARY! Dry hair? Dry skin? We have some top rehydration tips just for you, from our hair and beauty experts

Hydration Heroes Most people know to use a mask on their skin to help repair and protect the delicate layers, but did you know that you should also use a hydrating mask once a week on your hair??? This helps to restore natural oils and nourish the hair. This is especially important in the winter with the heating on at home, as this can dry out hair more quickly than usual. Hydrate-Me.Mask Your scalp is also just as important as your hair - Always use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner for extra moisture as the lack of moisture in the air can cause dandruff and scalp irritation Try KM Hydrate.Me Wash & Rinse If the weather is damp outside then it is important to use moisture repelling products. Jean-Michel, one of our hair Team Leaders, loves Kevin Murphy Un.tangled (a leave in conditioner and detangler with added heat protection against styling damage) or Young.Again (a leave in treatment oil to increase moisture, shine and which offers heat protection too!) As the hair is more delicate in the winter months, avoid overusing heat styling tools and invest in a heat defence product – Mel is one of Hair Team Leaders and recommends Heated.Defense A quick and simple solution is Young. Again Dry Conditioner – a rejuvenating and hydrating conditioning spray – just spray and walk away!

Call 0118 978 8111 or book online at www.theretreat-wokingham.co.uk

How do I know if my skin is dehydrated?

Although it’s Dry January don’t forget to drink 2 litres of water per day! • Dull skin • Open pores (the pores open to try and draw extra moisture in!) • Fine lines • Make up not lasting! If your foundation is disappearing throughout the day this could be your thirsty skin absorbing it. If you find that you are too tired before bed for a proper skincare routine, then why not “Put your skin to bed” as soon as you get home! Regularly exfoliate the skin with Decleor Green Mandarin Exfoliating 2 in 1 Scrub Mask. Don’t over exfoliate though as this has the effect of thickening the skin - exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells which allows products to be absorbed more easily. Protect your skin before your go out with an anti-pollution product. Bryony our Beauty Team Leader recommends NEW Decleor Antidote Serum which works against pollution, air conditioning, stress, temperature change and lack of sleep too! The entire Neroli range by Decleor will ensure you are rehydrating your skin quickly and easily every minute of the day and night: NEROLI BIGARADE HYDRATING AROMESSENCE SERUM Oil Serum for Dehydrated Skin NEROLI BIGARADE HYDRATING OIL MASK Mask for Dehydrated Skin NEROLI BIGARADE HYDRATING COCOON DAY CREAM Moisturiser for Dehydrated Skin NIGHT BALM NEROLI BIGARADE For an extra layer of protection try Germaine de Cappuccini Urban Shield with SPF50 to protect and repair. It also acts as an excellent make up primer.

The Importance of Sleep We sleep for more than one third of our lives, which roughly equates to 165,000,000 breaths, assuming we make it to the grand age of 80 years. It is widely accepted that sleep is vital for a healthy and long life – there are plenty of books and podcasts to substantiate how important sleep is for us. Yet, despite all of this knowledge and information, good regular sleep evades some of us. Modern lifestyles exacerbate the problem with the levels of caffeine we take on board, late nights and the constant simulation of artificial light from the technology we apparently rely on. If we encourage our body, breath, and mind into a more rested state before we ‘climb the wooden hill to Bedfordshire’ we are more likely to benefit from a better night’s slumber. There is a great yoga posture that I encourage people to try, before they retire into the evening, Viparita Karani, or ‘legs up the wall.’ It is exactly that. To get into the position, start by sitting down, side on and against a clear wall, (even better if you can do this from your bed), then swing your legs up the wall as you let shoulders and head come to rest on the floor. Get your backside as close to the base if the wall and join the legs together up the wall, take the arms out to the side and rest here. For added comfort, place a pillow or blanket under your head or lower back. Now relax all of your muscles, allow the skeletal frame to take the load and simply fall into the floor with gravity, feeling the sense of release. You can close your eyes and bring your awareness to the sense of grounding through the pelvis, back and shoulders, and the lightness of the legs WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JAN / FEB 2022

and feet. Perhaps you can sense a gentle pulse in the feet and legs or an echo of your heartbeat in the ears. If you find your mind still busy and churning away at the issues of your day, bring your attention entirely to each breath, as it moves in and out, noticing the movements of your tummy and chest. Perhaps count each breath, from one to five and then start again. Stay in this position for 5 – 10 minutes if you can. You might try to move your legs apart occasionally or join the soles of the feet together and bend the knees slightly, any variation that helps maintain comfort and a sense of release. When you are finished, very carefully slide to the side and come back down, stay lying on your side for a few moments and as soon as you can, get ready for bed. It’s a great posture, it is an inversion as the heart is above the brain. The nervous system must slow the heart down and regulate the carotid artery to prevent the rush of blood into the noggin, which calms the mind. It improves circulation by drawing stagnant blood from your legs to the lower torso, I like to think it reverse flushes the venal return valves, but I’m no expert, it can reduce fatigue and swelling in your legs. This is just one of many techniques in yoga to improve health and wellbeing, sleep well! Richard Welch www.richardsyoga.org 47

HOW MUSIC IS HELPING PUPILS AT LUCKLEY TO THRIVE Music education readies students for learning by helping to develop their basic mental skills and capacities (How Music Education Helps Students Learn, Achieve, and Succeed’ https://files.eric. ed.gov/fulltext/ED541070.pdf) Here at Luckley House School our pupils get many musical opportunities, both in their weekly lessons and enrichment through clubs, ensembles and trips. In Year 7 all pupils, in their first term, take part in a carousel of ‘Instruments of the Orchestra’.

They play, under the leadership of our specialist teachers, the instruments of the brass, string and woodwind family. We then encourage them to take up lessons. Learning a musical instrument or singing can help develop a child’s confidence and creativity, and sparks all areas of a child’s development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. We perform regular concerts at Luckley in our fantastic professional theatre, The Whitty Theatre.

Our most recent concert showcased an eclectic mix of musical genres, with solos, duets and group performances, including our Chamber, Junior and Senior Choirs, the Wind Band, Rock groups and Ukulele group. Other opportunities include large group singing. For example, on Sunday 28 November our junior choirs joined together with the Berkshire Maestros Young Voices to perform under the highly esteemed conductor and composer, Bob Chilcott. This was an amazing experience and collaboration for all our young singers as they worked together for the event. We also run a KS4 workshop in the summer term around the theme of ‘World Music’. All Year 7 and 8 pupils experience a whole day of creative practical music making in workshops, specialising in different musical cultures from around the world, including African drums, Samba bands, Russian handbells and songs from the Commonwealth. You don’t seem to hear very much about Quaker schools but then grandiose self-promotion isn’t very Quakerly. A little research reveals some interesting facts. The Obama family sent their daughters to a Quaker school in the US and Sixth Form leavers at UK Quaker schools achieve some of the best academic progress in the country (the measure that UK Government uses to assess schools), with two in the top 0.5% in England. Quaker schools in the UK are open to students of all faiths and none, with the emphasis being on the Quaker values rather than religion. Academic success has to be important in any school, but as Matthew Judd, Head at Leighton Park, identifies, there is more than one way of achieving this: “A student’s academic development cannot be understood in isolation but must be considered in conjunction with their emotional and physical wellbeing, confidence, maturity and happiness.”

Toby Spence, Head at Sibford School, adds:

“Quaker Schools offer a unique pathway... The distinct blend of values encompassing peace, equality, tolerance, social justice, simplicity and stewardship help to frame a community where the individual is known and valued, indeed celebrated for who they are rather than which box society might like to place them in.” Quaker schools seem to imbue gentle, civilised values - where students can develop and grow in a kind and supportive environment - with inspiration to encourage them to play an active role - or ‘Live Adventurously’ as Quakers would term it, all while achieving some of the best academic progress in the country. With Quaker schools not predisposed to shouting about themselves too much, one is left with the distinct feeling that these schools are something of a hidden gem.

Why not visit Leighton Park School and see for yourself how a Quaker education could benefit your child?

R Young Art Gallery is a newly opened, high-end Gallery situated within the heart of Wokingham. Owned by artist Richard Young, the gallery showcases the work of eleven talented and established artists and sculptors, many of whom are local. In November, we kicked off the first of our creative events with a workshop teaching people how to paint more expressively. This was run by one of the artists that we represent, Daren Mason. It was extremely popular and a huge success. Richard ran the next class in December which was an introduction to painting with a palette knife. During the class he guided participants and helped them to create their own beach scene which they then took home. He promised them that ‘’buttering toast will never be the same again’’ to which everyone agreed! It was a relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable evening for all. Suitable for absolute beginners, hobbyists, a team building exercise or as a group activity with friends, our classes are the perfect way to meet like-minded people and learn a new skill whilst having fun. Classes are held within the gallery which offers a contemporary, stylish setting with comfortable seating for up to twelve people. Duration of class is two hours during which time refreshments are available. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Gallery or online where a calendar of upcoming events is also available.
