his year has been full of change. I am thrilled to have become a Mrs. with a new name, Vanessa Bennett; our office has grown and changed with the introduction of Chinese EYE magazine; The Langham hotel has changed to the Cordis (meaning heart in Latin) and overall my thoughts on life have changed, realising that in fact change is the only constant. When things are stressful they are always going to change and get better and when things are wonderful they are bound to change and swoop downwards. Change is part of life. It is how we handle change that makes the difference and we develop strategies to adapt to change, which I am now becoming accustomed to doing. This issue we have two covers representing great brands. One is shot at the entrance of The Cordis hotel, a stunning new look with the same exceptional service and style. Our other cover shows off the beautiful pieces Tory & Ko Jewellers have on offer. No woman I know has ever said they own enough jewellery! On pages 38 to 44 our artistic photographer Max Lemesh is photographed with his daughter. Such moving and heartfelt shots, I hope you love them as much as I do. And on page 11 we celebrate our own rising stars, Jill, Max and Donna; three very accomplished and exceptional creatives. So as we head into our summer season in New Zealand appreciate the changes in your life, grasp them and fall in love with the journey of change. Today you have the power to change your story.

Tina Cross bringing harmony between inmates and police. EYE MAGAZINE RECENTLY CAUGHT WIND THAT TINA HAS TAKEN HER EXPERTISE IN MUSIC TO THE WOMEN’S AND MEN’S PRISONS OF AUCKLAND, WHERE THOSE INTERESTED IN MUSIC ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN HER “POWER OF SONG” WORKSHOPS.

14

K

een to find out more about Tina’s activities and how they have impacted both herself and the inmates we sent her a few questions.

Where did the inspiration behind “Power Of Song” stem from? My interest in wanting to help and support those on the wrong side of the law sparked as a teenager. I was an absolute goody two shoes at school and being brought up in Otara meant that I was living in the thick of disadvantaged families. However, my large family, both parents and 7 children were fine,

we didn’t have a great deal but we always had clean clothes and food on the table. I remember at one stage during my teenage years I wanted to become a Prison Matron – is there even such a thing? That was TV for you. After 42 years in the music industry, I feel that it’s my time to give back. I’m doing so through what’s most comfortable and familiar to me, which is by spreading awareness through the lyrics of my songs about family violence and child abuse. What do the “Power Of Song” workshops activities include? Day one of my classes are about harmony and in some cases the lead vocal learning of four or five songs, one of which is a medley that the inmates put together themselves. I also have Ernie Semu on keyboard accompanying me to help with the process, as it’s an intense, fast learning environment that requires complete focus from everyone. Thankfully those who partake are interested in singing. Day two is self directed learning, I leave my students to rehearse as a group in their own time. This allows them to strengthen their bond as a team without my presence, ensuring they’re relaxed and working together as themselves - the prisons are very supportive of this. Day three, I’m back in Prison polishing all of the songs in the morning through to the early afternoon, getting everyone ready for their late afternoon performance. Also joining the performance are The Manukau Police Choir ‘Nga Pirihimana O Tamaki Makaurau’, which is one unique, and massive positive about this workshop. The Choir and inmates perform together and in turn, break down barriers and preconceived negative thoughts between inmates and police. I don’t believe anyone has put these two groups together in performance in the past and it’s truly amazing to witness. The show places them all on a level playing field as they share the same space for the good of creating music, while also sending a positive message to other inmates who make up the audience. How does the “Power Of Song” impact you? The workshops are empowering for all concerned – the result of working with and getting to know inmates without knowing their story, is powerful. There are no prejudices between any of those involved – we are all in for the greater purpose. For me that is helping to cleanse, heal and positively empower the inmates. To believe positively in yourself, even if you have broken

the law, is a step towards breaking the cycle. I believe my workshop achieves this and I admit I feel, even though it’s only a three-day period, very close to those inmates I work with. The workshop, the inmates and the glowing results, bring me immense joy. Have you seen your students, the inmates grow and become more confident? Absolutely – particularly those who are naturally talented but may never have been given a chance to sing solo before, they really do rise to the occasion. The support and friendship between them is also wonderful to see. The inmates in the audience are the icing on the cake when they see their mates in performance mode. There is a fair bit of whooping and hollering! What outcome do you hope for in the future of your workshops? I believe the outcome is already achieved in the way the workshop runs. The addition I would like to add would be, to reduce to one day, learn perhaps 2 songs and perform acoustically. If this were possible it would reduce costs and also allow me to visit prisons more as a vocal coach for smaller groups and therefore more regularly. So there we have it, another Kiwi icon helping to create a positive change in the mindsets of New Zealand’s overlooked and misjudged citizens. Thanks Tina for the amazing work that you do, you’re an inspiration to EYE and so many others.

New Zealand, It’s Not Okay. NEW ZEALAND IS ADVERTISED TO THE WORLD AS A CLEAN, GREEN, PURE ENVIRONMENT AND LIFESTYLE, HOWEVER BEHIND THE SCENES OF AOTEAROA, LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOUD, THERE IS A CLOUD EVEN DARKER. IT’S A TOPIC THAT IS NOT EASILY DISCUSSED, YET HEARD OF ALL THE TIME.

16

I

t is a topic that will always need to be brought to light until there is change and it is one of New Zealand’s most serious social issues; domestic violence is not okay. New Zealand has the highest rate of domestic violence in the developed world, results showed by a study undertaken by the UN NZ Women. According to the New Zealand Family Violence Clearing House statistics from the year 2016, police were called out to respond to abuse every 5 minutes, an average of 279 calls a day. By the end of 2016, Police had investigated 118,910 incidents of family violence. An increase of more than 8,000 investigations on 2015. The statistics also revealed that two-thirds of these cases involve the presence of children and 4,285 of these children were the victims of assault. However these rates only show what has been reported, it has been estimated that approximately 76 percent of family violence incidents go unreported and that every year the number of family violence cases in New Zealand increases. How is it that some many cases of abuse go unaccounted for? Can we really claim we’re

a clean, beautiful and pure country when blood is spilt by the hands of someone the victim trusted and loved, while others turn a blind eye? Domestic violence is a cycle, even after the bruises fade, physically, emotionally and mentally, the damage lives on, says areyouokay.org.nz. The website also states that those who experience family violence (especially from a young age) and are not given the education, therapy and support in time to change behavioural attitudes, and are more likely to abuse others in future. The victims of this vicious cycle are less likely to finish school and keep a job and are more likely to turn to drugs and alcohol. They are also three times more likely to commit suicide; another dark cloud that hangs over New Zealand. However, there are survivors of domestic violence who escape the cycle of abuse and help to create a safer country. After hearing Eye was doing a story on domestic violence, the husband of a victim who had experienced abuse in a previous relationship came forward. “My partner has been under a dark cloud of fear for nine years and has finally found some closure with the sentencing [of the perpetrator] recently. Another young woman who was sexually assaulted [by the same perpetrator] from a young age, finally feels safer to go outside without fear now the man who tormented her has gone away.” “We are continually working with our four boys to teach them the true meaning of being real men who respect and love their women. It’s hard, but we know It will be worth it. My daughter and partner have five men (3yrs, 12yrs, 15yrs, 17yrs and me) in the house who will protect them to the bitter end. Although my sons are young, they will become men of honour.” It is these survivors, who we as a country should thank for their bravery, strength and fight that they have given towards ending the cycle of abuse. And who are also teaching the next generation that domestic violence and turning a blind eye to it is not okay. Richie Hardcore, a former martial arts champion, and ambassador for White Ribbon has recently helped launch the charity’s latest campaign ‘Raise Our Men’. The campaign explores New Zealand men’s experiences of being socialised into the ‘Man Box’ behaviours of: being in charge; holding to strict gender roles; appearing tough and only expressing anger; and relying on peer endorsement of masculinity. All of which are high risk of resulting in the use of violence. ‘Raise Our Men’ is focused on sharing how men have broken out of this ‘Man Box’ to be more equitable, flexible, healthy, satisfied and respectful. The signs that someone is a victim of domestic violence can include the following behaviour from the perpetrator: controlling behaviour, intimidation, threats to kill, strangulation, intense jealousy or possessiveness, stalking, increase of violence – more severe, more frequent (areyouokay.org.nz ). It’s important to note that

these are only a few of the signs to look out for. Families and friends who loved ones have died from domestic violence said that change of behaviour both overall and in the presence of the perpetrator, isolation, and indecisiveness were things they noticed before their loved one died at the hands of another. Often these signs are ignored or go unnoticed until it is too late. So what can we do if we know of someone you think might be or is a victim of domestic violence without endangering ourselves or pushing them away? According to areyouokay.org.nz what you can do includes; listening, give them support not advice, challenge the behaviour not the person, ask the person if they’re okay or if someone is hurting them, let them know you are there to support them, call to say hi, be there for them and let them know that your door is always open for more information on how you can help visit areyouokay.org.nz. New Zealand is a beautiful country, however, the cloud that overshadows us is nothing to be proud of. We need to do more and be better as people and as communities, regardless of how we have raised our children, there is always a chance that they will one day become a victim of domestic violence. Educate yourselves, and those around you, step up when you’re suspicious that someone is being abused and let’s make Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud, the clean, green country we portray to the world, domestic violencefree. For more information on how to assist a victim of domestic violence, Shine, White Ribbon and Women’s Refuge all provide more information and what to do, say and how to help.

Keep your EYE on... Passionate about… I’m all about using a really good primer, and I’ve just stumbled across Porefessional by Benefit. It’s a miracle pore minimiser! I’m also loving Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum.

Dream holiday... At the moment it’s Hawaii. But that dream will soon be a reality, as that’s where my fiance and I are heading for our honeymoon next year. We’re staying in Honolulu, but will look at heading out to Maui for a couple of days. I’ve heard the islands have the best mix of resort, beach, outdoor attractions and shopping.

Summer… I love how relaxed everyone is, people are so positive and festive during the summer. Of course we can’t forget about the sunshine, and the fact that we get more of it with those longer days!

WILHELMINA SHRIMPTON of Newshub

W

ilhelmina is a TV reporter for Newshub based in Auckland. She started her career in 2009 and moved to Newshub in 2015 as a cross platform reporter. But you will recognise her from her main role role on the 6pm bulletin. Wilhelmina reveals to us all her favourites things.

Favourite cafe... That’s a tough one as there’s so many beautiful places to dine at the moment. One of my favourites on a sunny day is Mary’s in St Mary’s Bay. They do an amazing pea and feta smash with poached eggs, and if you’re lucky enough to score a table outside in the court yard it makes a beautiful backdrop for your meal. Otherwise if I’m working, I can’t go past Goodness Gracious in Eden Terrace. It’s right around the corner from the newsroom, and they have the best bagels.

Perfect date... I really like the idea of day time dates in the summer. It would have to start with beautiful weather, followed by a long lunch somewhere with a view of the harbour. An extra bonus would be some live music to top it off. With all of Auckland’s beaches it would be nice to finish it up by watching the sunset on the sand, and dipping our toes in the water.

Top social event... That would have to be a tie between the races and the polo. Auckland Cup Week is so much fun, and both the Polo out at Clevedon and the Urban Polo are great days out. It’s generally the height of summer so everyone is in such a good mood, and I love the glamour of each event. Any excuse to wear an amazing headpiece or hat and I’m there!

Ninety Nine Reasons Why WE TALKED TO THE INCREDIBLE WOMAN BEHIND THE EVENT MANAGEMENT COMPANY NINETY NINE REASONS.

F

rances (Frankie) Mahoney gave us Ninety Nine Reasons (well, almost!) why her event management company is different.

Tell me a bit about Ninety-Nine Reasons. Events are about storytelling and taking people on a journey. At Ninety Nine Reasons I believe their experience doesn’t end when the door of the venue hits them on the butt as they leave, but continues to resonate, reminisce and relive over the following months. We are all about relationships; it’s the kiwi way! We listen, question, challenge - but most importantly we deliver. We come with experience and advice. Sometimes people have crazy ideas and think that you need to throw everything at an event…. you really don’t. A good event is about the experience, good service, fabulous food, great wine, and good company.

What inspired you to start the company? I had been working in the corporate arena for four years and absolutely loved it. I was then approached to be the Head of Events for an agency and it just wasn’t the right fit for me. So in one day I went from being on a lovely big salary to wondering what the heck I had just done! I have an eleven year old son and as a single mother I have moments where I wonder if I am being responsible to be starting this company and not finding another events role on a salary. I asked him the other day if he was ok with it all, and his response was ‘this has been the best year ever, I am happy because you are happy doing what you love’. What’s your favourite part of the job? There is that incredible moment when a guest walks in and their first response is an intake of breath or a ‘Wow’! What’s your mantra? Breathe in breathe out! White or red? Red all the way! Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Still delivering outstanding events, finding gorgeous spaces for those bespoke events…and my son to be still proud of his Mum.

Their jewellery has been worn on the red carpet and at runway events by actresses such as Evangeline Lilly and top models like Amber Valletta. The film, The Light Between Oceans, features rings created by the jewellers. Most notably, 4 pieces of jewellery were selected by Kensington Palace for the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Even the Queen now has a piece from TORY & KO. in her jewellery box, after they were

recently commissioned to create a gift that was presented to her for her 90th birthday. TORY & KO. have a range of different collections, from their vintage inspired Pretty Collection to their fun, on-trend Stella collection, aptly named after Kirstin’s daughter. Due to the popularity of the Stella collection, they have recently opened a boutique dedicated to it in the heart of Wellington, which also boasts a selection of their own cosmetic products and giftware. The Stella range is inspired by the night sky and their travels overseas, featuring motifs of stars, stellations and lightning bolts, along with twilight coloured topaz set in rose gold and midnight sapphires set in gold and silver. New Zealand Fashion Week saw their “Meteorite” Stella pieces launched on the runway last year. Keep an eye out for their new limited edition Stella pieces featuring champagne and galaxy diamonds and faceted onyx tassels alongside freshwater pearl drop thread earrings. Taylor and O’Brien also have hearts of gold, regularly donating to a number of charities including the Ronald McDonald House, NZ Women’s Refuge, and the Neonatal Trust.

DECIPHERING the Black Tie Dress Code

W

e all love to dress up every now and then, and don that gorgeous dress that doesn’t quite suit the casual Kiwi dining scene. However, there’s nothing that scares us more than the usual “smart-casual” dress code being replaced with those two infamous words: Black Tie. Black tie is actually the second most formal dress code, with white tie surpassing it. However, it has come to represent the dress code for many social events and it is something to revel in rather than fear. We’ve put together our top do’s and don’t’s for both men and women when it comes to deciphering the dress code. MEN

WOMEN

Don’t… Wear a Bright Shirt Black Tie is simple, minimalist style and so it’s recommended that you avoid bright colours and loud prints Traditionally, it means a clean, crisp, white shirt with a wing-tipped collar. This is designed to suit your dinner jacket or tuxedo perfectly and will ensure you look your best on the night.

Don’t Wear a cocktail dress Some will argue that exceptions can be made as to whether on not you’re required to wear a gown to a black tie affair. However, opting for a cocktail dress in lieu of a gown can look too casual, especially with all the men in tuxedos. One way around this rule is to wear a pair of chic separates, that fall to the ground in the same manner as a gown would.

Do... Wear a Tuxedo Otherwise referred to as a dinner jacket, a tux is key when it comes to dressing for a black tie event. Unlike a suit jacket, a tux has contrasting material to the lapel, usually silk or a similar fabric. Moreover, the buttons tend to differ from a regular suit as they are usually an understated colour, such as black or midnight navy.

46

Do… Ensure Every Detail Lives up to your Outfit There’s no point wearing a beautiful floor length ball gown if you are going to cover it up with a denim jacket. Make sure all your accessories on the night suit the tone of the event. Choose shawls and stoles over a casual jacket, and consider a beautiful updo and a more dramatic makeup look.

Here are his top picks for the season. REVOLUTIONARY PIONEER OF NEW ZEALAND CHINESE MEDIA A B O U T SK Y K I W I Born in New Zealand in 2001, SkyKiwi.com is NZ’s largest online Chinese language media platform. With 310,000 registered Chinese expats, students and ‘Chiwis’, SkyKiwi captures more than 90% of the Chinese market here in NZ with over 100,000 daily active users – 20x more than our closest Chinese-language competitor. With complete coverage of the Chinese conversation in NZ including lively forum discussion, original news content, real estate, listings, travel guides, group deals, lifestyle pieces and more, SkyKiwi reaches Chinese users using their native Chinese language, inside their natural digital environment. SkyKiwi.com and Stuff.co.nz Unveil New Strategic Partnership This year on 11 November, China’s version of the “Black Friday” digital sales day - ‘Singles Day’ – came to New Zealand as Stuff.co.nz teamed up with NZ’s largest Chineselanguage digital media platform, SkyKiwi.com. SkyKiwi’s clients base are now able to access Stuff’s Popshop channel, displaying and selling hot brands online. Stuff’s clients meanwhile gain the opportunity to sell directly to SkyKiwi’s

Chinese userbase through SkyKiwi’s Chinese-language platform. Stuff is New Zealand’s multi-award winning news and information website, drawing on the resources of Fairfax New Zealand Ltd to bring together more than 600 journalists and photographers from around the country to provide a single online ‘publication’. Popshop is an e-commerce website that targets Kiwi consumers through the power of Stuff marketing, delivering them a seamless shopping experience within the Stuff environment. China Southern Airlines, Huawei and Skinnies have been selected to launch phase 1 of this strategic partnership. Popshop has a high display rate within the Stuff environment, and smart tech allows targeted products to be displayed based on browsing habits. Stuff and SkyKiwi’s strategic partnership represents a powerful union of NZ’s largest English- and Chinese-language digital media environments, connecting users from both platforms with more great value brands. And this is just the first step towards deeper cooperation between Stuff and SkyKiwi: stay tuned for more developments!

December Launch for SkyKiwi’s new Facebook page In just 16 short years, SkyKiwi.com has built up the largest and most influential Chinese language digital media platform in NZ, spanning a one-stop news & lifestyle web portal, mobile apps (iOS/Android), and network of social media accounts on WeChat. The steady growth of both the company and their userbase has caught the eye of non-Chinese speaking NZ companies. To meet business demand, SkyKiwi is launching an official English-language Facebook page in December 2017 that aims to drive engagement with NZ companies and educate markets about the Chinese digital marketing world. Click through to Facebook to stay in touch with SkyKiwi, view promotional content, and learn more about China-targeted digital services. Chinese-language consumers have grown into an influential and wealthy segment of the NZ market. The 2013 Census puts the ethnic Chinese population of NZ at 171,411 and this number is expected to increase in the 2018 Census. The Chinese exchange student, migrant and tourist sectors are all growing quickly, with the Ministry of Education confirming in their 2016 report that the 38,046 Chinese exchange students in NZ make up the largest slice of the international student market (29%), with this number expected to reach 50,000 by 2020. Statistics NZ reported a net migration of 70,400 in the year ending November 2016. Meanwhile, 3.45 million tourists spent $1.65 billion here; tourist expenditure is expected to reach $4.34 billion by 2023. The growing purchasing power of the local Chinese community has made NZ businesses sit up and take notice. SkyKiwi aims to use Facebook to promote their rich media resources, influential news commentary and powerful network of assets spread across Chinese-language social media,

mobile and web platforms. The goal is to create a bridge that gives NZ companies insight and access into the NZ-Chinese digital community – or a stepping stone into the mainland Chinese market – while offering hot, high quality NZ brands to a potential market of hungry NZ-Chinese digital natives.

RACING FASHION

and its beginnings

WITH THE SPRING RACING CARNIVAL UNDERWAY, IT’S DRESS UP AND RACING FASHION TIME. SO HOW DID FASHION BECOME SUCH AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE RACING SCENE?

T

he sport of horse racing as we know it began in medieval England. The story goes that Queen Anne used her land to hold equestrian events which in 1711 became the official Royal Ascot race where royal attendance is guaranteed and seating in the royal enclosure is restricted to those with noble blood. Racing has since been associated with tradition and high fashion with some truly avant-garde creations and, at times, gravity-defying designs. During the 60s with the debut of the miniskirt, mod inspired styles, daring hemlines and Twiggy styles, hats, handbags, stockings and gloves were still the order of the day but racing fashion extended the skirt to ladies length keeping in line with the classic look. The space race influenced the next fashion frontier with chin-strap space bonnets, flat ankle boots, and sleek, plastic-like tech fabrics. When British supermodel, Jean Shrimpton, arrived at Flemington for the Melbourne Cup in 1965, she caused a sensation by flouting the dress regulations of the era in a white minidress which ended ashocking five inches above the knee, with no stockings, gloves or hat; She may have introduced the Australian public to the 60s look but the glamorous hats stayed. During Kentucky Deby in America, hat-wearing is a particularly strong tradition. But originally high-bred American women could not dress up or socialise in a setting that hosted gambling and alcohol. So the organisers overcame these reservations by using the event to showcase womens’ fashion, thus making the Derby synonymous with style and elegance. And so began the race tradition of hat wearing and formal dress.

Angela Stone’s 5 Tips for What to Wear to the Summer Races. 1. Length: a level of decorum is always required at the races – regardless of the season. While it can get hot at a summer race day, ensure your skirt is an appropriate length (not too short or too long), remember the races are an elegant event, not a cocktail party. Alongside this, avoid anything too low cut. If in doubt, a great guideline for length is a piece that falls at or below the knee. 2. Hats: while many New Zealand Racing events don’t require a headpiece, summer Races are all about the hats. They can give your look a bold edge, or help tie everything together. If you opt for an understated hat, dipping it slightly to one side can add an extra wow factor. A key tip is to try out your prospective hat or headpiece before the day, to get used to the feel and ensure it is comfortable. 3. Hair: perfecting your hairdo for the races is a guaranteed way to turn heads! Don’t forget that your hair can be an accessory – rather than just leaving it down, try experimenting with an up-do that incorporates a hat or headpiece to really maximize your hair potential. Think carefully about how your hair sits with your headpiece, remember you are trying to achieve an overall effect, and it’s not just about the outfit! 4. Colour: I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but colour is all the rage this summer. The sumer Races are the perfect opportunity to be bold and wear colour head to toe! Don’t be afraid with your colour choices, combinations and patterns. Donning bright and daring colours this racing season will help you to stand out from the crowd and be noticed.

5. Yourself: my most important tip is to dress for yourself. There are amazing fashion choices and headpiece options out there, but if it’s not you then you will end up feeling uncomfortable on the day. The Races are an opportunity for your inner fashion to shine, but make sure you feel comfortable and beautiful in your style choices – remember confidence comes from within!

Mark then explains how to train your new puppy, and if you have an older dog that wasn't trained properly at that crucial early stage, how to correct each of the top ten behavioural problems that occur. I S A J O U R N E Y, N OT A DE ST I NAT I O N . A winemaker’s journey doesn’t start at excellence. But you set that as your destination, and you start passing milestones. You grow new kinds of grapes. You innovate. You seek out new markets, all over the world. That’s what our family has done for three generations. We make some excellent wines, and we’re New Zealand’s most experienced family owned winery. But along the way, we’ve learned that there’s always room for improvement. Why? Because true excellence always lies a bit further up the road, and we plan to never stop. It’s something we never take for granted. Restore Skin Density with La Prairie We all want to restore skin density and refine our contours, but it’s not easy finding a product that actually works. There are so many treatments and skin care products out there, so it can be difficult knowing what to trust. Swiss luxury skincare brand La Prairie have always had a philosophy

of effectiveness when it comes to their youth defying products. I recently tried their new Skin Caviar Absolute Filler, which is no different. Not only does it target the loss of volume and substance in the skin but it also restores tone and density for enhanced skin fullness and refined contours. It does this by using Caviar Absolute, La Prairie’s new caviar incarnation. It is the result of an advanced technological process that captures the most elusive, volumeenhancing nutrients found in caviar. It’s no wonder that La Prairie celebrated 30 years of this collection in 2017! laprairieswitzerland.com

Your Must-See Christmas Movie The Man Who Invented Christmas is set in 1843 and tells the story of Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) as he suffers both financially and personally from the failure of his last three books. Rejected by his publishers, he set out to write and self-publish a book he hoped would keep his family afloat and revive his career. The film tells the story of the six fever-pitched weeks in which Dickens created A Christmas Carol and created beloved characters such as Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim and how Christmas is forever changed into the merry family event we know today.

MATISSE Thirty Years On VERY SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS ARE IN ORDER AT MATISSE – IT HAS BEEN THIRTY YEARS SINCE JEANNE AND ALAN BERTENSHAW OPENED THE DOORS OF A BUSINESS THAT HAS SET THE STANDARDS FOR AUTHENTIC CONTEMPORARY DESIGN IN NEW ZEALAND. 26

A

s much as the business has been about the support of valued clients over the years, plus the hard work and juggling involved in building up a business, the aspect that differentiates Matisse from the rest of the pack is the ability of both Jeanne and Alan to discern, at the outset, whether a newly minted design is going to succeed in the marketplace, or even better, become a design classic. On their annual visits to the world’s most prestigious furniture fairs, they only choose what they themselves genuinely like and don’t presume to guess the taste and inclinations of their client base. Often a new design uses shapes and technologies that are an acquired taste so a revisit is often needed. This confidence that comes from informed judgment has defined both the innovative vision and the inbuilt good taste for which the company has become renowned. It is therefore interesting to examine some of the

design landmarks to which Matisse has introduced its New Zealand client base over the last thirty years. Matisse’s cornerstone furniture brand is the prestigious B&B Italia and its foremost designer is the great Antonio Citterio – designer of sofa classics such as the Diesis (1979) plus the Charles (1987), the sofa in which he perfected the concept of the sofa as an ‘island for living’ with modules creating L-shapes and corners, optional depths and integrated chaise-longues. In doing so he changed the way we sit, entertain and use a sofa - several people plus the dog can sit, nap. work and curl up, all at the same time. Antonio Citterio is also the designer of the sublime kitchens from Arclinea, a renowned Italian company represented in New Zealand by Matisse. Antonio designed the original ‘Kitchen Island’ and in doing so, opened up the kitchen as a social centre of the home where family and guests can dine and chat with the home chef all at the same time. But most important is the range, now encompassing forty three agencies, that Matisse has introduced over the years – starting out with the colourful quirkiness of Moroso, then arty experimentation from BD Barcelona, Cappellini and Edra and the Cassina classics including furniture by Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright and Gerrit Rietveld. Lighting at Matisse ranges from the glamorous chandeliers of Brand van Egmond to the fast forward Linescapes from Nemo. Herman Miller has provided American ingenuity with groundbreaking office designs such as the Aeron Chair and Rimadesio has always remained the gold standard for the most beautiful doors and wardrobes imaginable. Setting the standard and never compromising on issues such as authenticity of design, sustainability, quality of materials and designer reputation has meant that Matisse is well placed to set the standards for another thirty years.

This provides a vast breadth of design knowledge. Harness what’s yours with Skysolar THE SUN IS OUR LARGEST AND MOST ABUNDANT SOURCE OF FREE ENERGY, AND SKYSOLAR HAVE BEEN HARNESSING THAT ENERGY INTO NEW ZEALAND HOMES SINCE 2013.

T

he kiwi owned and operated company acts on the firm belief that solar power is the way forward, creating zero emission energy to power your home and ensuring the preservation of New Zealand’s wonderful natural environment for future generations to come. Starting out on Auckland’s North Shore, after four years operating SkySolar is now available nationwide. The team is made up of highly trained and trustworthy professionals spread across a wide range of regions throughout the North and South Islands. Solar installations are different for every household, and the team at SkySolar provide a full service from sales, to design, to install – all to best suit the individual. The benefits of powering your home with solar energy are endless. With zero emission energy, solar panels are not only beneficial for the environment around us, they also provide an

economically friendly solution to cutting energy costs and better managing your power consumption. SkySolar also specialises in larger commercial installations customised to suit your business, meaning you can generate enough power from free zero-emission solar energy to power your entire establishment. By adding solar panels to your home or business, the energy radiated by the sun can be directly absorbed from your roof or building – even on cloudy days. This being your primary energy source, any extra power required will then come from the grid. Correspondingly when you have an excess of energy this power does not go to waste, and is instead exported to the grid resulting in a more pleasant monthly power bill. Additionally, SkySolar offers solar panel options for off-grid locations, allowing you access to renewable power in the remotest of locations. The off-grid options are also a popular eco-conscious solution for regular

“SkySolar offers solar panel options for off-grid locations, allowing you access to renewable power in the remotest of locations.” households, where the homeowner can take full management of energy production versus consumption – incurring zero monthly power bills! With SkySolar customers can take power into their own hands, managing and maintaining better use of energy. You can still make the most of the sun this winter, by shifting to a renewable source of energy, which benefits both your electricity expenditure as well as the environment which surrounds us.

APARTMENT LIVING CAN SOMETIMES FEEL AS THOUGH YOU’RE BEING FORCED TO LIVE WITH CHEAP APPLIANCES AND FITTINGS THAT WERE CHOSEN TO KEEP COST DOWN. HOWEVER, INVESTING IN AN APARTMENT DOESN’T MEAN YOU ARE STUCK WITH THE FURNISHINGS AND FITTINGS FOR LIFE.

W

e took a city apartment, and handed it over to the experts. Now, we are through the tunnel and almost at the end of our renovation - turning a blasé apartment into a luxury home. Now that we are the final stages, this time is all about the details. Luckily, we have internationally acclaimed designer Mal Corboy overseeing the project. His keen eye doesn’t miss a thing! Design, Join and Build (DBJ) are also great in this aspect. Paul and his team of professionals spot things that I’ve missed, ensuring that every single detail is perfect. DBJ are well-known

for their premium quality design, bespoke kitchens, furniture and fit-outs. Working seamlessly alongside Mal, it gave us a sense of relief to know we were in the hands of industry experts. They built all the cabinets in their factory, and in two days, installed it into my home. This included a beautiful pantry, all styled in warm tones of brown and gold. The Paterson taps and sink truly bring the OTT factor, with matt black taps and a striking gold sink. Moreover, the Parex water purifier means I can have hot or cold purified water instantaneously. Not to mention all the incredible appliances from Neff (Kitchen Things).

created by the kitchen, and replace the old carpet originally in the apartment. The Laminex finished timber veneer supplied by Laminex NZ looks so sleek and sophisticated and works perfectly as an alternative to solid wood. The non-porous architectural caesarstone countertop, also supplied by Laminex, combines the beauty and strength of quartz and concrete. A must - whether it’s an accent or a main feature in your kitchen. The caesarstone bench has been cut and shaped by Architectural Stone - again, such great service and quality work. Stay tuned for the big reveal in April, when all the details have been taken care of and we are ready to show off our new home. Laminex NZ

Thinking of Renovating This Summer? IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON RENOVATING THIS SUMMER, IT CAN BE HARD TO KNOW WHERE TO START. SO, WHETHER JUST MAKING SMALL CHANGES IN YOUR HOME OR EMBARKING ON AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT, IT’S IMPORTANT TO LAY THE RIGHT FOUNDATION. INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED DESIGNER MAL CORBOY GIVES US HIS TOP TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR PROJECT, BIG OR SMALL, GOES SMOOTHLY. 1. When budgeting for your project, be realistic on the results you expect, and what this will likely cost. Once you have an accurate budget, your designer can know what they have to work with. Make sure to allow a 10 per cent to 15 per cent contingency fund for anything unexpected. 2. Make a wish list from the ‘must haves’ to the ‘would be nice’. By prioritising, you can ensure all your ‘must haves’ are met before the ‘would be nice’ components consume your budget. 3. Be aware of tight timeframes, and to make your key decisions early in the project. This is particularly pertinent if ordering product from overseas as shipments can often take between 8 to 12 weeks. 4. Wait for your project to be fully completed before pointing out areas that you feel are not finished. Keep a list so you do not forget but rest assured that little things you notice during the installation process will all be corrected in due time. malcorboy.com

Enjoy summer cooking with Schweigen range hoods WITH SUMMER CELEBRATIONS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, IT’S LIKELY THAT YOU’LL BE SPENDING LONGER IN THE KITCHEN, CREATING DELICIOUS DISHES FOR MORE FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAN YOU HAVE ALL YEAR.

Y

ou’ll want to ensure you have a clean, quiet and clear place to prepare a risotto and have a drink or two with friends in the same space. This is where choosing a Schweigen range hood can make a powerful, yet quiet change to your kitchen. Schweigen range hoods are virtually silent, with the extractor fan mounted outside, rather than within the canopy over your hob. The weather-proofing technology on the fan allows it to function in all weather conditions and as far away from your ears as possible. With the majority of the energy spent pulling air out rather than pushing it,

48

you can still have a powerful fan that won’t interrupt your living areas. With a German-engineered motor, all range hoods from Schweigen have a 10-year warranty and are designed to be as energy efficient as possible. Other range hoods on the market can run between 220-238w while Schweigen keeps its consumption at a cool 150w at the highest and as low as 62w (650 model motor). The set-up also uses energy-efficient lights which also last 50 times longer than an incandescent light bulb. The slick and sophisticated design fits seamlessly into any kitchen. Simplicity is key, with clean lines and streamlined shape that will remain timeless over the years.

No matter the layout of your kitchen, the range hood can be mounted in the ceiling, against a wall and even over an island. There are a number of Isodrive motor options and range hood sizes which cater to the type of cooking you do day to day. Whether it’s a light fry or smokier affair, the powerful motors will whisk the smoke, steam and smells while minimising the spread of grease, oils and fat particles. If you are ready to let Schweigen into your kitchen, get in touch with the team at Schweigen. Our experts can help determine which product will suit your kitchen best and arrange an easy installation.

2017 SUPREME KITCHEN DESIGN AWARD WINNER

Silence is Supreme…with a Schweigen Rangehood Schweigen means “silent” in German, but we’ve got something to shout about. Schweigen would like to congratulate Glen Johns of Kitchens by Glen Johns in New Plymouth, the winner of the NKBA 2017 Supreme Kitchen Design Award. The Mount Maunganui kitchen features a long island bench that appears to float, black cabinetry as well as stainless steel and timber accents that reinforce the sleek, minimalist look. Glen Johns chose a Schweigen rangehood, which includes an externally mounted motor, to ensure a silent cooking experience. The German-made IsoDrive Motor uses its energy to create a vacuum to extract air rather than the pulling and pushing process of traditional on-board motors. It’s not only incredibly efficient, but the silence is deafening.

What products have we used to realise these trends

KEEPING TO A DESIGN BRIEF IS A SIMPLE WAY TO ENSURE YOUR HOME DECOR LOOKS ON TREND. HOWEVER, THIS CAN BE EASIER SAID THAN DONE. HERE’S OUR STYLE GUIDE TO KEEPING YOUR HOME ON TREND, NO MATTER YOUR DESIGN PREFERENCE. SCANDI An abbreviation of the word Scandinavian, this popular trend is one that has been going strong for a few years now. Focusing on whites, light natural wood looks and soft colours favouring blues and greens to create lighter more open spaces, this style serves as a neutral background that allows you to highlight your favourite features. To achieve this style in your home keep your walls neutral with whites and cool grey base colours, and choose light timbers to unify your spaces and reflect light. This style is about clean lines with a less-is-more focus so consider this when choosing your décor. Use cabinets and drawers to store utensils displaying only on a few meaningful pieces, and let your surfaces shine. Achieve the scandi look with these products: Caesarstone® – Cloudburst Concrete Laminex Timber Veneer® – Messina Rigato, Savona Rigato Melteca® – Warm White, Ash White, Silver Strata, Dansk Maple, Refined Oak

50

NATURAL OR ORGANIC Bringing the natural environment into our homes, this style pairs wood and stone with greys and whites to create a palette inspired by nature. If you’re ready to go Organic then focus on natural textures and timber tones to create your core palette, pair these with warm whites, greys and soft natural accent colours. If you are lucky enough to enjoy a beautiful view then limit window treatments and bring the outside into your home. Achieve the natural or organic look with these products: Caesarstone – Statuario Maximus, Tuscan Dawn Laminex Timber Veneer – Wild Pecan, Sublime Ash Melteca – Oiled Legno, Aged Ash, Moleskin INDUSTRIAL Taking its inspiration from old factories and warehouses that have been converted to living spaces, industrial style is a more raw and edgy, celebrating human engineering. Rather than a literal translation, this trend is more about an infusion of industrial design style in a non-industrial space. Concrete is key when seeking to infuse infuse your environment with an Industrial style. A benchtop or backsplash in the new Rugged Concrete design from

Recipe to Success KAURI BAY BOOMROCK IS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING NEW VENUES IN THE GREATER AUCKLAND AREA. LOCATED IN THE GORGEOUS VISTAS OF CLEVEDON, THIS VENUE PRIDES ITSELF ON EXCELLENT VIEWS, DELICIOUS FOOD AND HIGH-CLASS SERVICE.

O

pening in early 2016, Kauri Bay Boomrock follows the energy and sophistication of Boomrock Wellington, but with its own special flair. From weddings and birthdays, to corporate functions and promotional opportunities, the small but passionate team are ready to put on an event to remember, astounding and aweing their guests. We stopped by on a brief break to talk to owner Ollie and chefs Jeron and Phil about what has got so many people lining up to host their events at Kauri Bay Boomrock. Mapping out a new venture From the start of his career, Ollie has had a love of all things hospitality. This has taken him across the world in top venues such as The Savoy in London and the Raffles Praslin in Seychelles. However, the chance to work on a new venture drove him to return to Auckland. “Jonny and Mildy Eastwick (owners of Boomrock Wellington) and I discussed the idea that Auckland needed an unrivalled, custom-built event venue and before I knew it, I was heading home and down the consenting track with my business partner Kent Robertson to fulfil this vision,” he explains. Creating a new venue that would impress and entertain required some serious planning - and some mapping skills. “I literally stuck a compass point in Auckland Airport and one in the Auckland CBD on a map and drew a circle with each to outline a

58

maximum 1 hour journey on the road in any direction,” Ollie explains. From there, he thought carefully about the outstanding views, size of the land, climate and the fit with the existing community. The spot in Clevedon fit his list of criteria perfectly. To be truly successful, Ollie had to think about the full package and experience for his guests to help him stand out in a competitive market. “The vista is something we found from the start and have developed the building on it. It is certainly special and makes us different,” he says. “However the two things we can control since completing the building are the food and service. These make us stand out from other venues and are the recipe for our success.” Ollie credits a strong group of people working hard on site to create a tight-knit atmosphere and their ability to tailor each event to their clients needs. “We all get a great sense of accomplishment and ownership in what we do. With such a small full-time

team in place we rely hugely on each other to work together and everyone has a sense of pride in the place, as it’s different and unique.” Plating up Growing up in the Netherlands, Jeroen developed a taste for cooking early on in life. “I have been interested in food from a very early age. As a young boy I would go and help out in the local bakery a few hours a week,” he says. “I was attracted to cooking that much that after high school I decided that this was what I wanted to do.” After completing his apprenticeship in his home town, Jeroen has been a culinary nomad, cooking in countries like France, Spain, Canada, Dutch Caribbean and Australia.

“I loved every minute of it. Being surrounded by some very strong chefs, long hours, hot kitchens and lots of stress, it was all fantastic,” he says. While he was in New Zealand, he came across Kauri Bay Boomrock and jumped at the chance to work in the events space. From day one, Jeroen has been in the kitchen, bringing his passion into every dish he makes. Having a small team is no deterrent to Jeroen as they take advantage of the numbers to get the most out of each person’s special skills. “We work in a very tight and driven team which makes it easy to love working here. Our guests come here for a special occasion and are always taken by the experience we offer in terms of food, service and location,” he says. Despite having sampled cooking in many locations around the world, Jeroen always takes care to bring a significant Kiwi touch into the food at Kauri Bay Boomrock. “We strongly believe in using only the best ingredients that New Zealand has on offer when we create our dishes,” he explains. “Our menus run very seasonally and we will only use the highest quality produce available at the time.”

60 22

“One of my favourite events was hosting the recent degustation dinner we did for Patron, which was the first of its kind in NZ,” he says. “To match our food with some skilfully crafted cocktails was new to me but very enjoyable.” However, as a romantic at heart, being part of the romance of a wedding is a special highlight that he appreciates on each and every occasion. “Every wedding we do here is always an important one. It never gets old to be a part of their special day and knowing that our food adds value to this is a wonderful feeling.” Combining passion for food and landscape Cooking often runs in the family, for Phill the home was his first taste of making exotic and interesting ingredients from scratch. “I grew up in a family that was very adventurous with food, as there was always something exciting going on,” he explains. “In the kitchen, there were bundles of muslin cloth hanging from the kitchen taps draining the tofu we couldn’t buy at the shops, and in the garage we’d have jars of interesting preserves and ginger beer.”

“We strongly believe in using only the best ingredients that New Zealand has on offer when we create our dishes,” After his first part-time job in the local butchery, Phill developed an interest in kitchens and the industry and deciding to become a chef, he went straight from high school into culinary school and then onto the kitchen. Phill first met Ollie on site before the walls had even gone up at Kauri Bay Boomrock. This was enough to sell him on the idea and a year later, he and his wife moved up to South-East Auckland to join Ollie. “Between his vision and the landscape I knew it was where I needed to be,” Phill explains. “Driving up the gravel road through the farm to The Lodge in the morning is always stunning and sharing this with our guests is an absolute pleasure.” It is clear that Phil shared Ollie’s passion, made easier by the fact that he is so excited about his career in the culinary arts. “Being a chef has always ticked all the boxes for me,” he says. “I love it, the passion, the food, the pressure and camaraderie. In more recent years I’ve focused on our relationships with suppliers, seeing what it takes to do what they do. Spending a couple of days picking herbs

is a great way to appreciate what goes into them.” The location of Kauri Bay Boomrock offers many opportunities to sample the local fare, of which Phill takes full advantage. “We are surrounded by some of NZ’s best producers. From the kitchen, we can see the Clevedon oyster farm, our neighbours include the Clevedon buffalo company, exceptional tomato growers, stellar cheese makers, and plenty more,” he says. For Phill, the high quality of ingredients is the key to producing a mouth-watering dish that guests can savour. Although the team are busy with many events per year, each occasion is a special one for Phill. “I still get excited for every event we cook for. It is quite something to be part of someone’s significant day.” Get in touch with the team to find out how Ollie, Jeroen and Phill can work their magic at your next big event.

Like the entire range, their latest creation uses mainly New Zealand grown fruit, without any additives, artificial preservatives, colours or flavours. Even better, they’re also up to 50 percent less sugar than other drinks. They buy their fruit from growers all over the country, and squeeze most of it themselves using a machine they imported from Italy. The new flavour uses extract from the cola nut, made right here in New Zealand. Their passion has meant they have taken their company from strength to strength – growing the brand from one to nine flavours: Kola, Lemon Chilli, Lemonade, Ginger Beer, Feijoa, Orange Berry, Currant Crush, Lime-o-nade and now Raspberry and Kola.

Gerome

A GORGEOUS GREEK DINING EXPERIENCE IS THE NEWEST ADDITION TO PARNELL’S STRIP OF BOUTIQUES AND RESTAURANTS. AND I DO SAY ‘DINING EXPERIENCE’ FOR A REASON.

G

erome is not simply an eatery, it is a journey for all of the senses. Sophisticated, with a simplistic style interior, Gerome is both modern and modest. From the chic semi-circular suede couches to the high ceilings, the place manages both elegance and cosiness. Large windows make for a light, spacious feel, but in the evening the cosy overhead lamps make Gerome feel much more intimate. Whether you’re coming in for a three course meal or just popping in for drinks and nibbles, it’s the kind of ambience that will make you want to linger a little longer. Each plate is served on Piha artist Richard Naylor’s handmade crockery, and the presentation is delicately

64

effortless. Gerome describes their cuisine as ‘approachable yet contemporary’, and their current menu boasts classics like buttermilk pita bread with olives and dips, as well as traditional dishes with a twist, like their shoulder of lamb, tahini yoghurt, pine nuts, watermelon and mustard leaf. Their menu changes with the seasons because they are passionate about using local New Zealand produce. They only use locally sourced sustainable seafood from Leigh and the Chathams, and butcher their own carcasses on site, before cooking them over a charcoal and wood fire. The head chef, James, comes from a background of learning and working in the Greek islands, which brings a tangible authenticity to the cuisine. Creativity is central to the dishes, and comes through in the intensity and variety of flavours. Plates like charred eggplant paired with fresh pomegranate are a sensory story, and the chefs are avid storytellers. A welltuned palate will revel in the foreign flavours and ingredients, but if you do want someone to talk you through the exotic menu, the attentive and knowledgeable staff will be happy to do so. Gerome’s philosophy is that ‘food is reflective of many elements - a way of thinking, a view into someone’s culture, and the nostalgia of one’s upbringing’. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Finally, a quality craft beer house that we can really get behind. 16 TUN, A SELF-DECLARED ‘FREE HOUSE’. IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS, YOU’RE NOT ALONE.

F

ree Houses are beer bars that are free to stock the beers of as many breweries as they see fit (which is quite a number in the case of 16 Tun!), as opposed to ‘Tied Houses’, which are required to stock the products of only one brewery. So, 16 Tun are free to provide their customers with the full range of premium New Zealand craft beers. As soon as you walk into 16 Tun, you can tell these people really care about their craft. The atmosphere is brimming with the honest appreciation of a good brew. The minimalist warm bulbs, simple wooden tabletops and benches, and rows of gleaming silver taps all point to the star of the show: the cold, glistening golden brew in the tall glass. Even the name ‘16 Tun’ is a tip of the hat to the intricacies of the craft: a Tun is an insulated brewing vessel used in beer making.

70

If I haven’t convinced you yet, take a look at their menu. It’s a thing of beauty. I counted 19 beers on tap, all from some of the best independent New Zealand breweries. The bottled brew section of the menu boasts some 80 different beers from all the greats: Garage Project, Sawmill Brewery, Sunshine Brewery, Deep Creek Brewing Co., Parrotdog, and Yeastie Boys, to name a few. Their ‘Beer from Grapes’ section is another arrow pointed at the real centre of this hops-driven world, as well as an alternative for anyone who wants to switch it up. And you can be sure that the staff will be happy to pair a tasty morsel from their sumptuous food menu to accompany that drop you’ve selected. If you want to share in the love of beer as an art form, you’d better save this spot on your Google Maps app as ‘Home’.

Dantes Pizzeria… for Pasta? I SIT AT A WOODEN TABLE, DRINK IN HAND, AMIDST THE HUSTLE OF PONSONBY CENTRAL. THE RUSTIC SURROUNDINGS AND BUZZ OF THE AREA, COMBINED WITH THE WAFTING SMELLS OF WOOD FIRED PIZZA AND TOMATOES TAKE ME TO A EUROPEAN MARKETPLACE.

O

f course, I am at Dante’s Pizzeria, the popular eatery that has become infamous for it’s delicious and authentic Southern Italian cuisine. However, I am not here for pizza. What has brought me here is the lure of their new pasta menu, with favourites from Naples and Southern Italy. Since it’s launch 12 years ago, Dante’s has moved from its original Kumeu location to settle in Ponsonby Central and Takapuna’s Fortieth & Hurstmere. Both modern market lanes, they reflect the philosophy that Dante’s Founder & Co-Owner Kevin Morris hopes to bring to New Zealanders. The pizzas are all made using a mix of family recipes and traditional Napoli traditions, and have resulted in a cult following for the Italian restaurant. And so, for Dante’s to veer into pasta, Kevin and the team wanted to ensure that each dish could be served with as much care, and attention to detail. “The time and care we take into making our pizzas, is the same route we take with our pasta. The flour, the tomatoes, and many of the recipes come from a similar region in Naples, Southern Italy,” says Kevin. “We make our egg pasta daily - it’s that fresh. By using a very unique Italian pasta flour we found when we were experimenting, using our special pasta machine, which was custom-made in Modena Italy, it mixes the dough in a certain way to ensure the gluten isn’t overly developed, giving us that perfect Italian bite.” “No one at a street-food level is producing pasta to this quality. It is usually the bigger restaurants and five star hotels that put this much effort in, to produce this texture, colour and flavour because there are so many variables needed to produce pasta to this level.” I was lucky enough to try the delicious Pappardelle Salsiccia. A signature dish of Southern Italy, it was a sumptuous slow cooked ragu of pork and fennel sausage mince, chili, and red wine in a San Marzano tomato sauce. Bellissimo! “We are known for being the leaders for our pizza Napoletana. Now, we want to be the leaders for our fresh pasta. And I believe currently we are,” Kevin says proudly.

MORE AND MORE, THE PRODUCE AISLES OF SUPERMARKETS ARESTARTING TO RESEMBLE A STEPFORD WIVES LOOK ABOUT THEM.

isle upon aisle of perfect looking tomatoes, grapes, lemons, avocados, pears, and even perfectly round, shiny apples. While they look immaculate in the store, I always find when you bite into one of these, the beauty ends. Dry, tasteless, and pumped up with water to look good rather than taste good. And so, I’ve learned a new trick, to always go for the ugly apple. There is something natural, organic and authentic about ugly fruit. I always find these aesthetically displeasing fruit to taste delicious - juicy and full of flavour. Of course, it can be hard to navigate the maze of organic food labels and claims to find what is truly good for you. Organic refers to the way these products are grown and processed. Regulations vary across the world but according to the Ministry for Primary Industries, organic in New Zealand means avoiding or excluding the use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, antibiotics, growth promotants, genetic modification, and irradiation. Nevertheless, organic products must meet the same food safety standards that apply to all food for sale in the country. How your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as the environment. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionallygrown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms diminish when they eat only organic foods. Then there’s the issue of food waste in New Zealand. In developing countries, food waste is due to a lack of adequate storage or transportation but in more developed countries such as ours, food is thrown out simply for failing to meet the marketing standards in appearance and size. Many charities work alongside Foodstiuffs and Progressive supermarkets to reduce wastage, and companies such as Lotto also work to collect perfectly edible produce to give to those in need. While many supermarkets donate food, there is still the issue of farmers having their stock rejected before it even reaches the supermarket. Moving to an organic model with ethical values from the farm to your table is key. And so, we implore you to look for the supermarkets that support the smaller grower, true organic brands, and the ugly apples.

1947 EATERY Gives Tradition a Makeover

AUCKLAND HAS AN ABUNDANCE OF GLOBAL CUISINES, FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. EVERY DISH CAN BE FOUND ON IT’S CORNERS AND LANES, FROM THE TRADITIONAL TO FUSION.

H

owever, it is rare to find authentic cuisine in a modern setting, particularly Indian food. Auckland is short on eateries that deliver delicious food straight from the streets of Bombay in a contemporary environment. Federal’s St’s latest, 1947 Eatery, brings together this perfect blend of both contemporary yet authentic Indian cuisine. Founded by three friends, 1947 brings their vision to life: a modern eatery, providing guests with an experience which encompasses authentic Indian cooking while inspiring you with bespoke, in style cocktails. How is that there can be multiple Indian restaurants, people, and those that have visited yet it is so difficult to find food that tastes as good? That is question they dare to answer with 1947 Eatery. The restaurant does this and more, staying true to the authentic Indian cooking methods while inspiring the senses with innovative seasonal menus. However, neither of the three, young owners come from a hospitality background. Perhaps this is why they stand out so much, with

the incomparable to the commonly found Indian chains scattered around the country. Quality food and service is top priority for 1947, with their highly qualified chefs come with years of experience working in some of the finest kitchens in India and across the globe. Handpicked wines compliment the Indian dishes never found before in Auckland. From snacks to compliment the extensive drinks menu to some festive meals, 1947 Eatery has forever changed the way New Zealanders look at Indian cuisine. Unsurprisingly, 1947 has garnered a cultlike following by restaurant reviewers, Indians residing in Auckland, and foodies. What started as an experiment to bring authentic Indian food to New Zealanders is quickly becoming a favourite of the city’s dining scene. Ready to have your preconceptions of Indian food challenged? Then head to Federal St and experience Indian dishes, and bespoke cocktails like you never have before.

TINA CROSS’, Another Little One, a sign of hope for our children. NOVEMBER 30TH, 2017 MARKS THE RELEASE OF NEW ZEALAND ICON, TINA CROSS’ ORIGINAL SONG, “ANOTHER LITTLE ONE”.

H

owever, unlike the pop tunes that dominate today’s music industry, Tina began writing her song in August 2016 after hearing the news of Moko Rangitoheriri’s tragic death due to a devastating case of domestic violence and child abuse; a case that shook the nation. Driven by the need to spread awareness and create a change that will improve the lives of those less fortunate, Tina partnered with Shine, New Zealand’s leading domestic violence charity, helping to create a better future for New Zealand’s children. A future that’s free of child abuse and domestic violence. In dedication to the memory of all children who have lost their lives to abuse, Tina will launch “Another Little One” by performing with the Auckland police choir the - Nga Pirihimana O Tāmaki Makaurau Choir - at the Shine Christmas event. Tina’s song reminds us all that children are our future, and life is supposed to be given not taken away, or damaged by the hands of another. Her message behind “Another Little

82

One” is poignant and offers hope for a brighter, healthier future for the lives of our children. A child who is exposed to abuse can suffer both physical and emotional scars of the event for a lifetime, and if they’re not treated with the rehabilitation they need, the cycle of violence is more likely to repeat. This is why Shine started KIDshine in 2003, which provides help for children who have been exposed to abuse, while also teaching them how to be safe if they ever exposed to such an environment again. Most children who’ve had KIDshine now feel safer, more confident, and more able to talk to the protective parent about the violence they’ve witnessed, their guardians have also reported fewer behavioural problems. Tina’s career is far from her early glamorous pop and theatre background, however her drive to help improve the lives of those who’re less fortunate stemmed from a young age, due Tina’s inspiration for her Aunty Mira; Dame Mira Szaszy, one of New Zealand’s most influential Maori women of the 20th century. It is without a doubt that “ Another Little One” will provoke the urgency for society to do better and be better for our children, and for this, we commend Tina and Shine for everything they do.
