Unlocking the power of nature to deliver the world’s most intelligent skincare
TO WATCH WOMEN
Sometimes I ask myself, has the pendulum swung too far? Do we as women need to be the overachievers? Award winning, nurturing Mothers? Gym fanatics? Best wives? Amazing chefs? And yet still have a successful career?
I guess we want it all and I tend to surround myself with women that want to do well. It’s simple: women that are motivated will achieve - it’s in our nature to be successful. We are multi-taskers and achievers. I am constantly impressed by the strength and resilience of our female gender. Finding balance is probably the hardest thing for us to do. We talk to four women who are finding their way and making great change in the way things were done before.
These women are confident, brave and admirable. They are conquering the world and their world with their brands, from online shopping, to gin creations, non alcoholic drinks and beauty products. They are doing it their way and we wish them all the best success.
OUR COVER
In celebration of our ‘Women to Watch’ feature, Edna was our cover model. She is a business woman who is going places. Edna thinks outside the square, conquers her targets, and is boldly marching forward in the beauty world. Match this with the modern and luxurious Range Rover Sport SUV with timeless allure and the Basalaj Beauty Power Red lipstick and we have a cover shoot setting Basalaj is a rebel in the makeup world, creating high performance make-up that makes a difference.
She has quickly developed a cult following and we see her on a global stage very soon. We know everyone will soon have Basalaj Beauty in their makeup bag. Auckland weather has not been friendly and we had storms forecast for the day of this shoot. Norrie Montgomery, photographer extraordinaire always goes the distance to get the shot and with the help of our talented stylist Donna Balasouglou, a cover was created in between the rain for our winter issue of Eye magazine. We asked ourselves, what kind of person drives a Range Rover SUV? We think it’s a person who loves to drive, who loves to get out of the city and off-road but who also loves luxury and style. We fell in love at first sight. This is an ultimate SUV with power, yet a gracious presence. It seeks out its owner and is born for both city and country.

LIVIA WANG ACCESS CORPORATE GROUP
Every now and then you come across a woman who you know has been successful because she is simply good: good ethics, good intentions, and a good heart. Livia Wang is one of those women, the founder of a multi million dollar corporation – Access Corporate Group. We dug a little deeper to find out more about Livia and her life as one of EYE magazine’s ‘Women To Watch’ featured women.
What sparked the original passion to create the brand Access CorporateGroup?
I had always loved brands and was interested in the way that brands connect with the lives of consumers. Access was founded to help provide international communities with access to the fruits of the iconic Antipodean lifestyle, our premium health and beauty products. I could see the demand and how to meet it and set out to build a new system and platform to connect science with society. Recognising the value of social media and the opportunities that social commerce could offer Australian and New Zealand brands was fundamental in building a vision for the business in the early years. I was frustrated at how a woman can stand in the store and buy a health or beauty product without knowing anything about it except what the brand had written on the package. For me I wanted another friend’s recommendation or to see that it actually worked. I wanted a shared
experience to give me the trust and confidence to purchase. There is a lot out there that is not good for the consumer. We want consumers to be brutal and tell us the truth. I test all the products personally. Our research allows us to present only the best brands that work.
What was the first product you worked with?
Vida Glow’s marine collagen products were the first brand that I took under my wing. The category of ‘ingestible collagen’ was new and the brand really blazed a trail within it. It helped that collagen as a product was already known and established with trust, safety, and credibility, so this was a new format for consumers and the story-telling was based on the effectiveness of the format - absorbing collagen from the inside out rather than rubbing it into our skin in creams.
What are you most proud of in business?
I am incredibly product of establishing the world’s leading wellness portfolio, consisting of 14 premium brands. It’s been my passion to bring health and beauty to the world.
And to create credibility for our brands, we have rigorous scientific testing and efficacy standards. We won’t represent brands that don’t improve the lives of our customers. Quality is at the heart of our brand proposition.
We took Vida Glow from a Startup to global blockbuster, No 1 in the marine collagen category globally, with a turnover of $500M USD. I care that my business is sustainable for the future.
What drives your passion for your brand and products?
Our company vision is built around ‘Wellness Reimagined’ – this captures the innovation we apply to everything we do. We ask ourselves, ‘what if we did ……’ and we’re constantly pivoting towards a streamlined business model. We believe in delivering wellness as a service to our customers, and the challenge is how we can do this better as a wellness company. We try to think about the end to end service, for example how long it takes our customers to receive the products once they have bought them via an App or a live sale, because that kind of thing can make a difference between a returning customer and one who doesn’t come back. We also make a lot of effort to find the best brands and develop market leading products. Competition can be a good thing, because it makes you aim higher. We want to be the best and are proud to say that our products are the best available in their respective categories – because so much work has gone into finding the right formulation and the best quality ingredients. We have a lab in our office, and it’s regularly used.
What things in Access represent non-negotiables for you?
I would say Quality. The quality of our products underpins consumer trust and in the premium category, we must be consistent and set the bar high.
And also Agility. We are a scale up, but I value the agility benefits of a start-up. We have a small team who make quick decisions and we can implement new ideas almost immediately. That doesn’t happen in bigger companies, so it’s about trying to grow while maintaining that flexibility.
We have a relentless focus on wellness innovation that benefits the customer. Leveraging new technology, new formats, new ingredients, trying to do whatever we can to be an early adopter of advances in health for the benefit of our customers.
What is the hardest lesson/biggest challenge you have learnt?
COVID had an impact on our business and showed that we needed to diversify into a more global footprint, because different markets coped with the impact of the pandemic differently and emerged from lockdowns at different times.
Likewise, consumer confidence returned at varying times between markets, depending on how countries were individually impacted. At times of crisis, people do reduce their luxury spending, but then afterwards they spend more to compensate for going without, so as with all consumer goods there are surges and times of lower demand. No one could have planned for a pandemic, but it gave us an opportunity to take stock and assess our business internally and externally, in terms of our teams, international co-ordination and growth plans.
How can an ecommerce platform help global wellness?
Our business model is about promoting wellness solutions from science to society. We have a subsidiary not for profit organization, the ‘Wellness Access Institute’, that’s equipped to find the most impactful ingredients and medical innovations. Then through Access, because we have these various platforms connecting directly with our customers, we can accelerate the time taken to get a product through R&D and into the hands of a customer. Our ecommerce platform is next generation and combines instant chat with editorial, customized shopping offers and loyalty rewards. It’s a unique user experience that sits at the cutting edge of what’s happening in the wellness category. So far, we’ve reached 12M customers globally, and through WAI we aim to help make wellness more accessible. I believe in the future 50% of our incomes will be spent on wellness.
How has your upbringing shaped you into being the woman you are today?
As an immigrant to Australia and an Asian woman, embarking upon this journey into a highly competitive, fast moving business category hasn’t been easy. I come from a very traditional Asian family, but my soul is very free, so the challenge has been in trying to find a balance, an equilibrium between my background and my approach. Coming to Sydney to study, after leaving China, the new environment provided creative license and I could see different ways to add value especially in building bridges between Chinese and International cultures and Australian and New Zealand cultures, using my knowledge of brands to leverage social commerce opportunities for mutual benefit. My upbringing taught me discipline and that has an important role in business and it’s balanced by impulsiveness, that instinct, that as an entrepreneur you have to follow in order to make things happen. If you were to give one piece of advice to a woman starting out in business, what would it be?
There are a lot of expectations for women in business, you are playing multiple roles - typically that of professional, mother, daughter, partner, wife. My advice would be not to focus on the expectations of others, the only role you are playing is yourself. Prioritise yourself and your unique situation and work out how to balance those roles in a way that is appropriate for your company, your relationship, and your family. Nothing is set in stone, and you need to prioritise different roles at various times. You are going to make mistakes, learn from them and move forward quickly.
What is your vision for your company for the future?
Everything is focused is on how we can empower our global customers with better access to wellness. Finding the best super ingredients first, getting products through the complex web of certification and approvals, from science to shopper more quickly than our competitors. Moving to new international markets where health and beauty evolves differently to the ANZ model.
One woman that inspires you. My mother is my greatest source of inspiration. I have seen her contribute throughout her life to her family, creating opportunities for us that she didn’t have herself. Love is very powerful, and people show their love in different waysthrough support, through sacrifice.
My mother has volunteered all her life for different causes, she is a very giving woman who has shown me the impact that one person can have on a cause and a community when they are engaged and involved. I love what I do. I hope I can work until I cant!

SARAH BONOMA DANCING SANDS
Nestled in a pocket of paradise in the beautiful Golden Bay is an award winning Gin Distillery that are in true Kiwi spirit, doing amazing things. The first Distillery to move their bottle production to NZ on a commercial scale, we chat with founder, Sarah Bonoma to learn more about her incredible business journey.
Tell us about your journey and what lead you to start your own Gin brand.
I grew up in the UK and started out my career in academia with a Masters Degree in Genetics and an offer of a PhD. I didn’t enjoy the slower pace of academia and so instead did an IT internship with Procter & Gamble. That turned into a full time role and I spent the next 8 years working on some exciting and challenging projects for P&G all over the world. That’s how I met my now husband, Ben – he was a consultant on a project I led over in the USA.
We had a long distance relationship, first between London and New York, then between China and Singapore as we both got moved to Asia with our roles. Over many weekend trips to New York we got to know each other over gin martinis with blue cheese olives at iconic Manhattan cocktail bars. This twist of fate sparked not only my marriage with Ben, but also our appreciation of the beauty of a tasteful drop of gin. Long distance lost its shine pretty quickly and we decided to quit our jobs and start fresh in a country neither of us had visited before, New Zealand.
We settled easily into New Zealand 10 years ago, bought a house in Wellington’s Island Bay and both secured corporate jobs. We’d long discussed starting a business together, but we weren’t quite sure what that would look like. About 8 weeks after our first daughter was born, Ben sent me a Trade Me listing for a 150L still for sale in Tākaka, Golden Bay. We joke that it was the sleep deprivation that made it seem like
a good idea, but we bought it and a few months later we turned up with our brand new baby and not a clue on how to run a distillery. And that’s how it all began for Dancing Sands Distillery!
What is your point of difference in an ever growing Gin industry?
We strive to challenge convention and do things differently. At first we did this predominantly with our Gin flavours. Our Dry Gin was one of the first to not include any citrus botanicals, our Sun-Kissed Gin is naturally coloured and flavoured with fruit, not conventional for a pink gin.
Now we’re really challenging packaging conventions within the spirits industry. We’re the first to move our bottle production from overseas to New Zealand. Alongside using recycled glass we are also using transition glass which is the glass that would otherwise be discarded when the factory changes glass colour, so we’re requiring fewer virgin raw materials in our bottle. Traditionally spirits bottles are made from thick, heavy glass to give off the perception of increased value. In order to continue to lessen our carbon footprint our new bottles are 30% lighter than our previous thus requiring less carbon to ship.
What was your inspiration for moving your bottle production to New Zealand?
In 2021 we began exporting to the UK, we quickly came to the realisation that we were having bottles produced in Europe, sent to New Zealand to be filled and then shipped right back to where they came from. That didn’t sit right with me. During Covid, like many businesses, we became hyperaware of our supply chain, and we switched to sourcing local wherever possible. It was always a long - term goal to see such a fundamental part of our product: our bottles to be produced by a New Zealand manufacturer.
Dancing Sands are known for their unique, one of a kind flavours.
What does development of the product process look like?
Ben does all of our product development and has done since we began Dancing Sands 7 years ago. He usually gets inspired by a single botanical he wants to make work with in a Gin and then he’ll experiment with potentially complementary botanicals to create the final product. Over the years he’s taught himself a lot about flavours and how they work together - it turns out he has a really good palate and a creative flair that we never knew was there before we started Dancing Sands.
What are your 3 proudest ‘business’ moment to date and why?
Launching our new NZ made bottle a few weeks ago is without doubt been my proudest moment – its been an aspiration of ours for years ,watching it coming off the production line in Auckland, I had tears in my eyes. The second would be the installation of our 700L still, Florence, named after Ben’s Grandmother who is still full of spunk at 100 years old. For the first 6 years we produced thousands of litres of gin from the 150L we had originally purchased, and making the big step to invest in a large still felt like our business was taking a significant step forward. The third
would be watching our team grow and develop into the unit it is today – we have a great range of skills in the team, and everyone brings something to the mix. It doesn’t matter what gets thrown at them, they have a can-do attitude and have pulled together many small miracles in the last few years.
What has been your most challenging moment/s or hurdles in building your business so far? It seems like every week brings a challenge, I’ve long since learnt it’s just part of running a business. Obviously, the pandemic was one big hurdle that never seemed to end, and now we are faced with high inflation and increasing costs. The biggest challenge is constantly juggling all the different aspects that seem to pull us in different directions, without dropping any balls.
What is your advice to the amazing women who are trying to do it all; growing a business, raising a family, being a great partner and friend, and everything else in between? Be patient with yourself and accept that you won’t get it right all the time. The to-do list is always going to be never ending so don’t let it control you. I’ve got better at putting boundaries in place, better
at making time for the kids, Ben, myself. And I try not to compare myself to others – what works for someone else might not be right for me. So, you do you, and don’t worry about the rest of it.
Top tips or advice to any other female entrepreneurs who are thinking of taking their business to market?
Do your planning, spend time thinking it through and doing your research before you hit go. Above all figure out your financials to make sure what you have is viable. If it all stacks up, then go for it. Be prepared for a roller coaster 12-18 months, the learning curve is steep. And bring in the right skills where you don’t have them, as soon as you can.
What’s next for Dancing Sands Distillery?
After a year of preparing for and then implementing our new bottle we’re finally back to doing what we do best, making innovative spirts. We’ve got a couple of new Gin flavours in the pipeline, as well as going back to making Rum which is the first spirit we released 7 years ago.

LISA KING AF DRINKS
Lisa King is achieving a lot of good stuff in her life. Her website is impressive. But her latest venture, AF drinks has got us fizzing. A non-alcoholic brand that is gaining traction faster than you can crack open a can. Years ago, it was weird or odd if you did not drink, but now it’s common that possibly even 50% of your friends don’t drink and that’s normal. Bars and restaurants now offer a range of non-alcoholic drinks and are encouraged to do so by liquor licensing agents. We talk to Lisa about her ‘whys’ and ‘hows’.
What motivated you to start AF Drinks?
I decided to stop drinking for a while after experiencing a few bouts of vertigo. I realized every time I had vertigo, I’d also had a gin and tonic. However, in New Zealand’s heavy drinking culture, saying you’re not drinking makes you feel like somewhat of a social outcast, garnering strange looks and questions like ‘are you pregnant?’ or ‘is everything ok?’. It was odd to have to justify not
drinking - no one questions anyone who stops smoking.
I also discovered how hard it was to get a good non-alcoholic drink that wasn’t a sugary soft drink or juice. I wanted a sophisticated, adult drink that was as good as my old gin and tonics. So I decided to make them myself and that is how AF started. I got the founding team together over our first lockdown and we worked over Zoom for the first 3 months before meeting each other in person. We were clear from the start that AF was not only about providing great alcohol-free options, but we also wanted to create a conversation and change behaviour to make not drinking cool and sexy. Helping people to moderate and reduce alcohol consumption is ultimately our mission.
What do you tell yourself each morning when you wake up?
I tell myself how lucky I am to be in this place, to have been so fortunate to be given this life and I am not going to waste it.
What was your biggest challenge? and tell us about that warming feeling?
Starting AF on the back of ‘Eat My Lunch’ was the biggest challenge I had; Overcoming the pressure I put on myself and the insecurities I had going on in my own head. I felt that if AF wasn’t successful, I would look like an imposter and my credibility would be questioned.
Whenever I find myself having doubts or fears, or when others have underestimated me, I turn that into fuel to drive and prove myself (or them) wrong. That warming feeling? - it’s a secret!
Who do you look up to in business?
I don’t have one person I look up to, but I take a lot of inspiration from people who have failed or had to overcome a huge challenge, to then go on to be successful. I love stories that show resilience and determination.
I also really admire those who don’t place making money as their primary objective but rather use
their skills and experience to really make a positive difference in the world they live in.
Tips to live by:
Take the risk. When you’re young, it’s the perfect time to be a little risky - you have nothing to lose. Don’t keep waiting for the perfect moment or time to do something. There never will be and not moving forward is the killer of any business
Know that everything in life is temporary, including the highs and lows. So enjoy the positive moments. Make the most of every day and don’t hold onto things.
You seem to go against the grain and push to do good stuff, why?
It’s a personal belief that if we want to change the world, we have to take action ourselves, rather than wait for the government or someone else to do it.
Business is such a force and the impact through business can be enormous. We need to leverage it to make the changes we want to see. Business for me will never be just about making money. It has to be doing good as well.
What are the plans for AF this year?
We have just launched into the US on Amazon and into a national retailer, Sprouts. This is where our focus will be for next 12 months as the US is such a huge market and every state AF is in, is like operating in a different country. We aspire to be a global leader in the alcohol free space, so we will start exploring another market for launch in 2024. Oh and you will find us on Air NZ now! Cheers!

EDNA SWART ED&I BODY
Edna Swart is one of Eye magazines’ Women to Watch, and we have been watching her for a while now, along with many others who follow her lively Instagram page. She is vibrant and passionate about business and her growth in the NZ market is steady. Edna is not an influencer, yet she possesses all the skills to influence; she is not a model and yet she is a high end fashion model on our cover; she is a woman in business, throwing all her energy into her creations and forging ahead in the harsh world of beauty products. We find out a bit more about what is behind the scenes with ed&i body.
Tell us about your brand?
The idea for ed&i body stemmed from my own personal struggles and deep insecurities about my skin, as well as a sense of isolation without a supportive community to turn to. Growing up, it was challenging to find a trustworthy brand with products formulated
from genuine intentions that would work effectively. In my opinion, skincare is not solely about external applications. It begins internally, and education is necessary to help more women, like myself in the past, comprehend the broader context of skin health.
I left school and my home at the age of 15. Despite this, I pursued various certifications and worked hard to provide myself with a roof over my head. After a brief stint in South Africa, where I initially intended to settle, I decided to pursue a degree in Finance. I spent eight years working my way up the corporate ladder, believing it was the key to success. However, I never felt a strong connection to my career choice, as I realised I had pursued it to fulfil family expectations and overcome past disappointments. Although I have a somewhat chequered past, I view it as different chapters of my life. Regardless, I have always possessed a strong drive to attain excellence and take control of my destiny.
What makes you angry or happy in business?
What a great question - I haven’t been asked this before. To start, happiness for me comes from the moments when customers message me or approach me on the street to share their insecurities and how ed&i has helped them feel more confident in their skin. These encounters often bring me to tears because I can empathise with their struggles and connect with them on a personal level.
In the past, I’ve only experienced anger a few times in my business, and it’s usually due to a lack of respect. Respect is one of my number one rules in life, and I have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to disrespect towards me or my business. So, if I ever feel disrespected, you can be sure I’ll make it known.
What is your point of difference?
Our unique selling proposition that sets us apart from other brands is the personal story behind each product’s development, which cannot be replicated. Every product has a clear purpose and adheres to our philosophy of offering high-quality
formulations at affordable prices, enabling more women to feel confident about their skin by using premium products made in New Zealand. We’ve put in a lot of effort to ensure that ed&i is not a brand that intimidates consumers and that everyone, regardless of gender, feels welcome in our community.
What is the biggest mistake you made in business?
Relying on the input of others over my instincts. It’s not essential to have 20 years of business experience to feel confident in making decisions, and you don’t have to heed advice solely based on someone’s extensive tenure in the field. Your intuition can offer valuable insights, and although it’s wise to consider others’ perspectives, you don’t always have to follow their guidance.
Do you believe you should put your heart and soul into your business or is it just a business and a bank account and would you ever sell it?
A sustainable commercial aspect is integral to any business, but I don’t believe it should be the sole motivator. Personally, I find fulfilment in putting my heart and soul into my business because it aligns with my purpose. While this may not be the case for everyone, my community and customers are the backbone of my company, and without them, it wouldn’t exist. Consumers are discerning and can distinguish between businesses driven solely by profit and those with genuine care. I, for one, only support businesses with a relatable and authentic persona. While I can’t predict the future, I currently have no intention of abandoning ed&i, as it serves as my motivation and reason for waking up each morning.
What are your 3 top tips to young women wanting to go into business?
Discovering your ‘why’ or purpose for your business is crucial. Passion alone may not sustain you through challenges and personal growth. Your passion can fluctuate, but having a strong reason behind your business will help you stay motivated when you feel drained.
Begin when you are 80% prepared because you will never be fully prepared. Waiting until you feel completely ready will only delay your launch. The most important thing when starting a business is to simply begin. Perfection can be achieved over time, and even then, I don’t believe there is a thing called ‘perfection’ in business. The only exception I will make here, and I’ll refer to my business as an example. The product inside was perfect, but the messaging, branding, visuals, and communication has all changed and evolved over the years as the business has matured with its customers and we have understood more of what and who the brand represents. Consistency is key. Dedicate yourself to putting in the work, embrace the grind, and take steps every day towards achieving your desired outcome. It’s not necessary to accomplish everything in a single day, but it’s important to consistently show up and take action.
What is next for your brand?
The year 2023 is dedicated to expanding our product line. To prepare for the future, we are heavily investing in our business growth this year. Our initial focus has been on launching our first ‘antiaging’ product, and we plan to introduce two more products that complement this line. While our ultimate objective is to establish a broader global presence, our current aim is to become one of New Zealand’s most prominent and wellknown beauty brands.
So there are some golden nuggets for anyone wanting to create a brand from founder and director Edna Swart. She is a ‘just do it’ kind of woman and we will continue to watch as she moves gracefully through the business jungle.

AMBER BASALAJ
BASALAJ BEAUTY
Amber Basalaj, founder of the newly launched luxe makeup brand Basalaj Beauty, is a woman who knows the value of dreaming big; an entrepreneur who is uncompromising in her vision to provide cosmetics that are superior in quality and performance for all makeup lovers to appreciate and rely on.
Breaking into the beauty industry for Amber wasn’t just about formulating incredible cosmetics or feeding her passion for makeup, a spark that started at 7 years of age watching her mother host makeup parties, but it was the knowledge that she could be instrumental in helping women feel empowered, confident, and beautiful. That Basalaj Beauty would be a
brand to unashamedly encourage inclusivity and individuality no matter a person’s age, ethnicity, sexuality, size, or style.
This ethos was a significant factor in the development of her product range, with every colour and formulation carefully curated to s uit a myriad of skin tones and textures and a five-year labour of love working with her US manufacturers to create quality ingredient, high-performance a nd cruelty free products, that delivered on pigment intensity, durability, and ease of use. These qualities Amber personally had often found lacking in many of her makeup purchases in the past.
Amber’s own journey from makeup admirer to makeup owner and developer is a rag to riches tale, each chapter more inspiring than the last. Supporting herself as a young mum and putting herself through university was just the start of her determination to succeed. Becoming a
wife and business owner cemented her ability to navigate life’s ups and downs like a master, always with the philosophy that you never give up, you just fight harder, even more so if you’re confronted by non-believers. An attitude that enabled Amber to become financially independent and leave the word ‘struggle’ in her past. Something she also attributes to her family, who’s unconditional love and support have inspired her at every turn and strengthened her confidence and belief in self.
Family time, car racing, reading books and cuddles with her pets are Amber’s big loves. Followed closely by her self-proclaimed decades obsession with couture fashion, collected like fine art, starting with her first Louis Vuitton bag purchase at 25 and continuing to a gallery sized range of limited edition and one-off made pieces, that include Balmain, Versace, Gucci, and Chanel, just to name a few - some never purchased to be worn, just admired.
Consequently, it’s not surprising when Amber turned her sights to becoming a cosmetic queen, that she would never compromise on
quality and performance - it’s just not in her DNA. The only thing she is willing to compromise on however is the price point, ensuring high end doesn’t equate to high cost.
So, after years of research and hard work, Basalaj Beauty’s first range of impressive products: an eye shadow palette, 3 face and body highlighters, and 6 matte lipsticks, was introduced with a soft launch in July 2022.
The 1985 eye shadow palette (named for the year Amber was born), favoured by well-known NZ influencers and personalities, including Toni Street, consists of 18 beautifully intense pigmented hues, a mix of matte, satin, and metallic finishes, including Amber’s breakthrough duo chrome colour, also titled 1985, that reflects a dreamy blend of soft baby blue and silver on application.
A special mention of Maverick, designed with Lady Gaga in mind, is quickly becoming a favourite of professional makeup artists who proclaim it as being one of the best; if not the best, black eye shadow they have ever used.
1985 was designed as the perfect travel palette, with a colour range that ensures its owner can create endless colour combinations for both day and night, without the need of multiple palettes.
The Basalaj Beauty face and body highlighters offer shimmer and shine in all the right places, and can be used as eye shadows as well; highly pigmented a small amount goes a long way, so yes it will be a while before you need a replacement.
Zippy, is iridescent and ethereal, Immortal in a versatile champagne hue and Joanne, named in memory of a dear friend that passed from breast cancer, is the Midas of gold highlighters, and
since its launch has been aptly donated to goodie bags at Breast Cancer Cures’ Fashion for a Cure events, which Amber is an avid supporter and sponsor of.
Then there are the mind blowing Basalaj Beauty luxe embossed matte lipsticks. They feel like silk on application and promise hydration and a velvety finish not usually synonymous with matte products. Enriched with oils of Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Jojoba, and developed to suit a wide range of skin tones, with the purpose of taking the guesswork out of colour selection, the Basalaj Beauty 6 shades of lipsticks – Stripped, Loyal, Rebel, Iconic, Power and Boss – are must haves. You may also appreciate the considered square packaging that caters for long designer nails and does away with the issue of ‘rolling’.
This impressive range was designed to stand out from the mainstream, in all ways. Its dynamic packaging designed by Amber’s son Jayedan, was meant to be seen and remembered. It’s bold and unapologetic, and vibrant to anyone who dares to be different, a quality that Amber advocates fiercely and embraces with her brand taglines #LiveFiercly and #BeYou (… be a Basalaj Beauty).
And what does Amber hope to achieve in the future? In her own words…
‘Seeing my brand across the world, and creating a business that grows to the point of being able to support other creatives like me, to achieve their dreams. With so many new products in the pipeline I hope to offer an even larger range to my customers for their enjoyment, in the years to follow! Further than that I have a few projects up my sleeve, so let’s hope they are here by then and ready to take on the world too!’

Getting married? We know how important finding a wedding photographer that suits you is. Everyone loves a wedding; the warm fuzzy feelings of love, fun and laughter are words that stick in our minds, but it’s the photos that give us the most memories. Moments captured that we didn’t download at the time; moments of joy, love and fun that are posted on our walls for a lifetime.
Meet Zara from Zara Jay Photography. She is a super cool Kiwi, a queer friendly, adventure loving photographer. She can usually be found at the beach with her dogs, painting the sunrise or picnicking with friends. She is a natural talent and produces some beautiful images for brides all around NZ with a focus on the North.
After more than 5 years and hundreds of weddings she has honestly seen it all and nothing catches her off guard anymore. Zara just snaps every moment as it is happening. She will have you climbing trees and dancing in the rain, capturing every unique and beautiful moment. The joy she captures is evident in her photos. Her passion began many years ago, as a child running around barefoot in Kerikeri, Northland. From the day she could hold her Dad’s camera she was hooked. She tells us ‘Nothing beats the feeling of getting that perfect shot and seeing the happiness on peoples’ faces when they get to relive the moment through the photo. It still seems unreal that I’ve been blessed to have been doing this full time. It’s been such an amazing experience so far, adventuring to new places and meeting awesome people.’

Estele YOURSELF
We are never fully dressed without jewellery, and every piece has a personality, an ego and a character, telling a story about who you are. I have never met a woman who does not love jewellery in some form. It makes us feel good.
Estele NZ which launched into the NZ marketplace a year ago is an ethical and sustainable Jewellery brand that has been going for over 30 years, has over 300 stores and operates in 10 countries. Husband and wife power couple Sandeep Joseph and Shazia Khan fell in love with this brand when they went to the factory based in Hyderabad India. They were blown away by the brand’s ethics and standards. The company strongly supports women and has a clear vision for their jewellery saying ‘we are a women centric brand that believes in the vision of a product designed by women, made by women, and sold by women, to women. They are incredibly proud to be bringing this ethical and sustainable brand of jewellery into the NZ marketplace with a small footprint and are thrilled to announce they recently secured a contract with Prouds department store in Fiji.
They are a highly conscious and ethical couple who are passionate about doing the right thing.
The product is handmade and each piece is slightly different. But the key point is its quality at a low price so everyone can afford to wear it. And top it off they recycle all the waste material rubber, plastic, metal and water.
Estele NZ has quickly broken into the NZ market with online sales and an app, and their product is flying out the door.
They have recently partnered with Haute Couture fashion designer Cecilia Kang for Fashion Week 2023. Cecilia has global recognition and Shazia tells us ‘we are thrilled with the partnership and look forward to showcasing our brands together.’
We look forward to watching the further success of this brand and hope you can all Estele yourself a little bit to bring joy to yourself or someone else.

JOURNEY TO HEALTH WITH TOROHAKI COACHING
As a mother of two, a wife and business partner, Kathy Guard has always been health and well-being focused.
Her latest venture is a successful coaching business, Torohaki Coaching, which resulted from a journey she began after years of health struggles, endless research and seeing the positive impact that a healthy lifestyle can have on an individual. Kathy helps a range of individuals, from those needing to overcome the challenges of yo-yo or fad dieting, chronic inflammation, to poor sleep or even confusion around healthy eating. She thrives in providing her wealth of knowledge, including yoga and movement, along with strong support and guidance to her clients, so that they too can make positive changes towards a happier, healthier life. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, though when asked ‘who inspires you?’, Kathy quickly answers; ‘Ultimately, it is my clients who inspire me the most. Witnessing their determination, resilience and transformation is truly motivating for me. Their stories of overcoming obstacles and achieving their goals inspire me to continually improve as a health and nutrition coach.’
So, what can you expect when you join Torohaki Coaching? Obviously a better
understanding of your body’s needs and how to nourish it properly, but also how you can make sustainable, manageable changes, so you don’t ‘fall off the wagon’ or become unmotivated. Kathy’s perfect client is someone who is ready to take control of their health and transform their life, ‘They are individuals who are committed to making positive changes, open to learning and willing to put out the effort required to achieve their goals’, she continues, ‘whether they want to lose weight, improve energy levels, manage a specific health condition or simply adopt a healthier lifestyle, I’m here to support and guide them every step of the way.
Kathy is committed to providing honest and evidence-based guidance to her clients, strongly believing in transparency and authenticity, which is the reason she puts so much effort into making sure the information she provides is not only reliable, but also tailored to the individual as she understands that everyone has unique needs and backgrounds.
Kathy’s mission statement for Torohaki Health is simple: ‘good health is a fundamental right, and, by addressing the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing it, we’re able to create a healthier and happier society.’

For wine writer, sommelier, and wine distributor Angie Atkinson, drinking champagne is always about trying something new.
‘There are so many styles and blends out there, and it’s great to have a go-to brand you love, but you could be missing out on something even more delicious.’
During Angie’s experience working in the hospitality industry, including owning and operating several establishments, her exposure to wines and brands was vast, and this laid the foundation for her career and a lifelong passion for wine. Angie always had an entrepreneurial streak and launched The Wine Writer in 2020, twenty-three years after her obsession with wine formed at a champagne tasting.
With a DipWSET to her name, Angie ultimately decided to put the small businesses she worked with under the same umbrella, and Blanc Distribution NZ was born.
The nationwide distribution business specialises in high-quality

and exciting beverages. Their products include organic wine, natural wine, fine wine, water, vermouth, liqueur, and gin. As one of New Zealand’s newest distribution businesses, Angie brings 12 years of experience in wine sales, writing, and wine list consulting.
Some of the outstanding wines Blanc NZ represents include Prophet’s Rock, On Giants’ Shoulders, Swift, Scout, Maxim Wines & Vineyard, Windrush, and Georges Road Wines. Each wine brand is quintessential to its area, rich with unique flavours embodying the soul of New Zealand wine, and each comes with its own unique story. The familyrun business, Windrush Wines, is nurtured by a second generation of organic producers; Maxim Wines & Vineyard embodies a history dating back over a hundred years when the winemaker’s great-grandfather opened a bar and restaurant business; and the team at On Giants’ Shoulders is inspired by Issac Newton’s famous quote, ‘If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants.’
‘Mine is champagne!’ Angie said when asked if one could have a favourite wine, though ‘it’s possible to have a different favourite depending on one’s mood and the time of year!
Angie’s passion for wine has sent her travelling across the globe and all over New Zealand, tasting wine and savouring their stories. However, amongst it all, nothing is more important to her than her daughters Bella and Lorelei, and when things feel a little out of control, Angie loves to sing ‘Every Little Thing is Gonna Be Alright’ to find a sense of calmness.
From the NZ Fashion Week in 2019, Angie’s favourite fashion item is her big yellow skirt that was love at first sight and one that she relentlessly stalked Instagram to find. She goes about her busy days wearing her favourite Curionoir, Orpheus Incarnate perfume.
As well as her Blanc NZ business, Angie is a writer for North and South Magazine.

Hands often tell one’s life story and can age us terribly. Often the skin changes and starts to show uneven pigmentation, with deposits of melanin in age spots and liver spots. Prevention is a good idea. Women, because of their thinner skin, are apt to show pigmentation changes as early as their thirties, unless they protect their skin on a daily basis. Keeping the hands well-moisturized can decrease the crêpiness that marks both fat loss and dehydration. Where loss of volume becomes a problem, either your own fat or off-the-shelf fillers can be injected into the backs of the hands, and these can produce a dramatic rejuvenation. Whereas fillers, usually a hyaluronic acid molecule such as Juvederm® can trap water molecules in their structure and thus produce a plumping effect which lasts for around 8-12 months. Autologous (i.e., your own) fat, sucked out of your lower tummy or thighs, of which at least 50% will survive transplantation, seems to last for at least 3-5 years, if not longer.
Once age spots and pigmentary unevenness start to appear, there are a range of treatment options available nowadays, one of the most effective being Intense Pulsed Light phototherapy (IPL), which can rapidly reduce pigmentary unevenness and produce a generalized brightening of the skin on the hands.
Aging, like other bad stuff, just happens. In the face we present to the world, it is evident for all to see, but does it have to be so? While your lifestyle choices and habits, from cumulative sun exposure to smoking, drinking and diet can affect the picture, the single greatest determinant of visible aging changes, is your unique, inherited genetic blueprint. Nevertheless, even though a cynic has described facial aging changes as being the equivalent of a really bad accident that happens in slow motion, with a little insight and willingness to put in the effort, the impact and the effects of time passing can be ameliorated.
While ideally, the face should be assessed and treated as a whole, it is helpful to divide it into anatomic zones in planning treatments. But first it is good to look at some non-surgical and skincare options. An appropriate and physiologicallybased skin care program will benefit virtually every skin type. It makes sense to optimise the health of the body’s largest organ, the skin, before embarking on surgery; this not only improves wound healing, thus minimizing down-time, but it also improves the ultimate quality of scars. A growing range of cosmeceutical preparations, often rich in elements such as Vitamin C and A, both important for collagenesis and the turnover of the skin, are available for professional use.
A great option is Skin Planing, Peels and Microdermabrasion. Skin quality and appearance can be greatly improved by stripping away the upper layers of dead cells and increasing the turnover of younger, fresher cells. This may involve chemical peels, a mechanical technique (abrasion or planing) or a lightbased treatment (laser), or even ultrasound.
Botulinum toxin (Botox® ,Dysport® etc.) is another great option and works by paralyzing muscle. Thus, if injected into a muscle which creases the facial skin to form an expression line, such as a brow furrow in frowning, the line will become softer and less noticeable as the folded dermi starts to ‘heal’. Fillers, whether off the shelf, or the patient’s own fat, are used to plump up tissues and lift and soften wrinkles and depressions. The use of autologous (i.e from the patient’s own tissues), cells such as fat, stem cells and platelets have been show to have markedly restorative benefits and are likely to become increasingly important in facial rejuvenation in the future.
THE FACELIFT.
To do this, the deeper support structures are safely lifted, tightened, and repositioned and the redundant tissue trimmed away. The skin is then re-draped and sutured under minimal tension, thus ensuring optimal scarring. It is a capital mistake to use the skin to try to hold up a facelift. The skin is an elastic structure and will stretch to release tension, so that a skin-only facelift will revert to a pre-operative state within a matter of months.
THE MID-FACE LIFT.
Dr Tristian de Chalain often combines a mid-face lift with his facelifts because no other technique has the ability to restore the cheek fullness and height as effectively. Also, this will shorten the aged, elongated lower eyelid and help lift the corners of the mouth.
Altogether this provides a dramatically effective restoration of youthful contours to the face, especially when combined with adjunctive procedures, such as PRP, autologous fat transfers.
Depending on individual concerns any one of a number of adjunctive procedures can accompany a basic facelift, from forehead and brow lifting, through temple tightening, eyelid tucks and eye-bag corrections, facial implants, nose reshaping, lip lifting and chin reshaping to neck lifting.

VISITING FACEWORKS WHERE BEAUTY RUNS IN THE FAMILY
Raised watching her mother’s impeccable work in the field of cosmetic medicine, it was only natural that Leigh Cattin would join Dr. Teresa Cattin’s highly regarded FaceWorks clinic in Mairangi Bay, quickly accruing an impressive client list of her own.
Highly trained in the use of neuromodulators and cosmetic fillers and a leader in her field, Teresa has over 25 years’ experience in cosmetic medicine and is famed for her less-is-more approach to graceful ageing. A past President of the New Zealand College of Appearance Medicine who is regularly invited to speak at international conferences, she pioneered the use of the ‘French Touch’ approach to injectables in New Zealand, effectively using carefully placed, very small amounts of cosmetic injectables to rejuvenate and enhance the face subtly and discreetly.
Leigh, a newly graduated doctor who recently travelled with Teresa to an aesthetics conference in Monaco, is planning to follow in her mother’s footsteps with a career in family medicine and appearance medicine, and the pair thrive on the working environment that a mother-daughter relationship brings. Working from Teresa’s clinic on Auckland’s Apollo Drive, Leigh, who has a particular interest in neuromodulators and lip enhancements for younger patients, has bought an impressive new dynamic to the space and a raft of new clients who appreciate the considerable difference that taking a subtle but considered approach to injectables makes.
‘With younger patients, it’s not about softening age-related changes on the face, but rather about carefully enhancing each client’s natural beauty,’ says Leigh. ‘Sometimes a lip may be just slightly too thin or asymmetrical, and a very small amount of product can make all the difference in a way that is not at all obvious or ‘done’ looking.’
Both women are passionate about the gentle but effective French approach to appearance medicine, with Teresa saying: ‘There is increasing evidence that tiny amounts of neuromodulators given regularly and started at the right time can actually prevent very deep lines from forming. Deep lines aren’t necessarily a result of age at all. They can be a family trait, which can start at a much younger age. Neuromodulators control the development of these family traits beautifully, for natural results that never look frozen.’
Incredibly serene but with just the right amount of comfort thrown in for good measure, the FaceWorks clinic is a true reflection of the professionalism and warmth you experience when you meet Teresa and Leigh, making it a true ‘beauty destination’ worth visiting.

WE TALK TO DR LEIGH CATTIN ABOUT THE SKINCARE TREND TAKING THE INDUSTRY BY STORM.
Working out of the highly regarded FaceWorks clinic in Mairangi Bay, Dr Leigh Cattin and Dr Teresa Cattin stay one step ahead of the pack when it comes to what’s trending in the world of appearance medicine. Having just returned from an international conference in Monaco where the latest trends and techniques in non-surgical cosmetic medicine were presented, Dr Leigh Cattin tells us about the ‘next generation’ of skin care.
How does one define ‘good skin’ in 2023?
Good skin quality is skin that is healthy, undamaged, and youthful in appearance. And although lifestyle choices and topicals are a great first-line option for improving skin quality, they aren’t always enough. This is where injectable skin boosters come in, which we are very excited about.
Tell us more...
These products ensure ingredients reach the deeper, most important layers of the skin rather than being limited to the superficial layers only. Clinically found to be far more
effective than topical skin care alone, skin boosters deliver ingredients such as antioxidants, nucleotides and amino acids directly to where it’s needed.
They also ‘boost’ the skin’s production of collagen and elastin for up to nine months after treatment, delivering that ‘glow’ we’re all looking for.
Who should have skin boosters?
There is a huge decrease in collagen and elastin production as we age, mainly due to decreasing oestrogen levels. Skin may become noticeably drier, and fine lines develop a few years before the actual onset of menopause. Skin boosters play a vital role in helping to reduce that impact by directly stimulating collagen and elastin production.
When is the best time to start having them?
While perimenopause is the ideal time to start regularly using a skin booster, it’s worth considering at any age. At Faceworks we are finding older patients who are using skin boosters for the first time also
benefit, with visibly improved skin quality.
For the younger patient, poor skin hydration tends to be the main barrier to glowing skin, which can be helped with boosters too.
Are skin boosters available in New Zealand yet?
Yes, at FaceWorks we have two different boosters available, each with unique ingredients.
How often should you have a skin booster?
At FaceWorks we generally suggest scheduling an annual treatment, but this does depend on age and skin condition.

TURNING BACK TIME
Ageing is inevitable, but is there an art to ageing well? The Ageless Podcast by Rescu guest starred Greg MacPhearson, founder of Science, Research, and Wellness laboratories who spoke about the 14 hallmarks of ageing. Ageism is something we all grapple with in some form or another, especially when we start seeing the physical elements ourselves like muscle loss, wrinkled skin, aching joints, and all that jazz. However, Greg speaks about turning back the clock with our cells. He talks about exciting research into the art of stemcell rejuvenation and supporting our DNA through the process of ageing.
We all have stem-cells throughout our entire body that convert into any other cell, but they get tired as we grow older. However, there is a way to stimulate them naturally and increase rejuvenation. Greg explains how different supplements and calorie amounts can react to the various chemical switches in our body and DNA, helping our cells to age gracefully. With the aging population we are moving into, it’s important to begin thinking about preventive wellness such as natural stimulation and enjoy a healthy and peaceful retirement.
The DNA biological age test can determine the patterns of information surrounding your genes, which can show how well you are aging. SRW nutraceuticals are not a one-size-fits-all supplement
which is why understanding your own biological age is helpful to understanding what interventions can help you. The SRW Cell Range Products are breaking barriers in the science of preventive wellness and graceful ageing, and I am more than excited to begin trying the product for myself, starting with a blood test.
The supplement supports cells that decline with age and stimulates them into keeping their energy, which amazingly reduces physical signs of aging, such as skin elasticity. Greg tells us its never too early to begin thinking about your ageing health, and the sooner we start to act on it, the better. For example, the NAD molecule is the second most prevalent molecule in our body, besides water, and it drops significantly after the age of 40. The Cel2 product aids those molecules to keep our energy boosted.
Following my DNA biological age test, I will supplement the cellular nutrition product. I am excited to get involved in this incredible ageless science and to see the changes of my cells over the next year. Unlocking these anti-aging secrets is ground breaking in this world of health challenges, and it’s thrilling to be a part of something that will help others live to their highest potential.
Follow my journey in the next issue of Eye magazine.

I recommend starting with a little GHD Sleek Talker on wet hair before using Duet Style. This helps detangle the hair, protect it from heat and maximize the longevity of the style with up to 72 hours of smooth and shiny hair.
Start using Duet from the back of the Hair gliding the tool through the hair at a slower pace than you would normally do with a hair straightener.
In the drying mode, hold the Duet for 3 seconds at the root area, don’t worry it’s not going to burn your scalp! Duet has the right temperature in the side vents to dry the roots without overheating the scalp.
It takes the hair from wet to styled with up to 4 passes with NO DAMAGE!
As you glide Duet through the hair, bend the front sections of hair to create face framing.
After drying the whole hair on drying mode, you can transform your Duet into a ghd styler, by simply holding down for 3 seconds the Shine Shot button. Using the Shin Shot setting gives you the extra sleep and shiny hair you’ve come to love from ghd.
To finish, we recommend a drop of ghd Sleek Talker.
The end result? From wet to sleek, shiny and styled with one hair-changing tool!
The ghd Duet Style is available in black and white and retails for $645. Available from partner salons and the ghd website ghdhair.com/nz
FOR THE LOVE OF BBQ
For Ken Van Mackelbergh, barbecue is not a season; it’s a community, a culture, a lifestyle, and, most importantly, it is about family and friends. It is about celebrations and creating memories, about building on old friendships, and making new ones. This has been Ken’s ethos since as long as he can remember. With over 20 years’ experience as a qualified Chef, Ken is lovingly known as ‘BBQ B.O.I’, a name quickly adopted for the competitive BBQ team he is part of with Nick and Jamie. This year a partnership developed between BBQ BOI and kiwi-owned business, The Kiwi Outdoor who manufacture one of the most outstanding BBQs we have ever seen built in NZ.
The Kiwi Outdoor Oven journey began at Pauanui beach back in 2012, when two kiwi blokes decided they wanted a ‘fast heat up, top quality pizza/cooking oven and outdoor fire’. At the time there were various options on the market, but none that did it all, they wanted a product that was NZ-made and large in size (with the idea of commercial use in mind). Quickly, the duo created prototypes and the testing stage began. The company officially launched in 2013 where the ovens were initially promoted by a wood-fired pizza caravan set up in Pauanui beach. Word of mouth quickly spread about this mouth-watering wood-fired taste. In 2018, Brendan and Naomi Arnet purchased the business to take it on the next stage of its journey – becoming the best Kiwi outdoor oven/fire on the market. Known as the ‘entertainer’s dream’ – the ovens produce cooking results that previously one could only dream about and outdoor heating that is described as phenomenal. The oven is capable of cooking banquets for large groups, or just have the pizzas ready at the same time for the entire family. Enjoy roasts that fall
off the bone, beautiful natural smoky BBQ flavours, and an oven that cooks it all. Slow cooking is a dream because of the oven’s conductive heating and insulation, meaning you can spend your time mingling with guests, instead of being stuck in the kitchen or behind the BBQ.
When Brendan and Naomi purchased the business, they were obviously impressed with the food cooked in the ovens, but also joked about how great it would be if they could be part of a competition to prove it. The Kiwi Outdoor oven featured on ‘My Kitchen Rules’ back in 2014, but the duo had their sights set on something bigger. After joining forces with team BBQ BOI, they began testing the Kiwi Outdoor Oven in the 2023 NZBA competition season kicking off with back-to-back Grand Championships in Kumeu and more recently, Grand Championship at Smoke on the Coast, the biggest competition of the year so far, putting team BBQ BOI at the top of the National Leader board.
The field at such competitions is highly competitive, and their wins have earned them a coveted spot at The American Royal World Series of Barbecue. This is the world’s largest BBQ competition and has over 500 teams competing. Ken, along with the rest of the BBQ BOI team and a Kiwi Outdoor Oven kit, will be heading to Kansas at the end of September to compete against some of the best BBQ teams in the world. We are super excited for them and hope you are too. Let’s take NZ BBQ to the world.

NON SURGICAL SOLUTIONS AT KAI MEDISPA
Treatments don’t always need to be invasive to get great aesthetic results. While some have considered the surgical face lift as the gold standard for achieving dramatic rejuvenation since the 1960s, in recent years, countless devices have come to market promising to tone, tighten, resurface and revitalise, many of which don’t even pierce the skin.
Positioning itself as the non-surgical solution is Kaiz Medispa. Open just a year, Kaiz had attracted many individuals to its door because of the offering. Beautiful environment joint with effective non-surgical solutions.
A facelift is often still the best treatment for those with significant laxity of the face and neck tissues, but in the right candidates, noninvasive interventions can give excellent results. ‘The results are different, but non-invasive devices can achieve a significant lift to the skin of the face and neck with little to no downtime,’ says Kai owner of Kaiz Medispa at Parnell Auckland.
AGE-OLD PROBLEM
Ageing is a natural process, but it’s one many are seeking to slow it down. Ageing is characterised by decreasing skin elasticity resulting in thinning of the epidermal and dermal skin layers leading to fine lines, wrinkles, tone and skin texture issues.
Plastic surgery, and minimally invasive treatments such as dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections, are on the rise. However, these come with significant risks by changing the structural integrity of the face, adding product, removing tissue or freezing muscles rather than focusing on the cause of the ageing process – loss of collagen.
‘With surgery, you have one treatment and get instant results,’ says Kai, ‘With non-invasive devices you won’t get the same degree of tightening, but you can get very close.’ She adds that while non-
invasive devices tend to involve more treatments, they are lower risk and less expensive. ‘It depends on what you’re trying to achieve. I remember speaking to someone who had a facelift and was very happy with the results but her concern was that she still had ‘old lady skin’,” she recalls. ‘Surgery didn’t do anything to improve the texture, colour or tone of her skin. For that side of rejuvenation, you need a non-surgical intervention.’
RADIOFREQUENCY FOR REJUVENATION
Radiofrequency (RF) is a technology increasingly used to treat skin laxity by increasing tissue temperature. The aim of this non-invasive technique is to induce thermal damage, stimulating neocollagenesis in the deep layers of the skin.
Radiofrequency penetrates to the subcutaneous layers, producing an exothermic reaction. The physiological effects on the dermis include tightening, firming and brightening. This is thanks to the thermal reaction that causes collagen to contract, promoting collagen synthesis and tightening the underlying skin structures without damaging the top layer.
Before and after RF microneedling treatment with Secret RF DeviceThe technology has increased in popularity in recent years since celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Victoria and Daid Beckham spoke out about its benefits.
IN COMBINATION
Radiofrequency in combination with microneedling (RFM) is one of the up-and-coming solutions being lauded for the ultimate ‘nonsurgical face lift’. Microneedling on its own involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilised needles. These small wounds cause your body to make more collagen and elastin, which heal skin and help it look younger.
Radiofrequency microneedling combines both technologies for ultimate collagen-producing power. Microneedling encourages collagen production superficially while RF goes much deeper to boost this production, creating faster and more dramatic results that improve over time.
The union of these two techniques helps to lift, firm and tighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, shrink pores and even minimise acne scars and other blemishes.
Radiofrequency microneedling can offer similar results to ablative laser procedures but with significantly less discomfort and downtime. It can also be used as a preventative and to avoid even more invasive procedures such as surgery when laxity is not severe.
Devices such as Secret RF and Focus Dual create controlled trauma that boosts production of collagen and elastin. The results are firmer, tighter, smoother, more lifted and hydrated skin. ‘It’s all about prevention and remodelling that collagen so that it’s better quality,’ says Kai. ‘There are lots of technologies that can plump the skin and stimulate collagen such as RF and ablative lasers. But if you really want to tighten as you would with a facelift or threads, you need to target the SMAS [superficial musculoaponeurotic system] layer.”
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can be added to cause reversible damage to the far deeper SMAS layer of the skin, which then helps tighten and pull, especially in the jowls and around the eyes. By combining HIFU with RFM, results can be maximised at every layer. ‘A facelift is still going to give the most dramatic results. But if you are not ready for that step, or can’t afford the downtime, risk or financial expense, then HIFU is a really good option,’ says Kai.
For any kind of concerns, consultation is always the first step. A thorough skin analysis, education and treatment plan that suits an individual patient lifestyle is given to make sure patients are wellinformed before any procedure. One of the things that we love about our job is helping people find the ‘TruYou’. They choose the aspects of their face they would like to accentuate, detract from or even identify their gender preference! Essentially, our goal is to align your inner beauty with your outward appearance. We take the time to get to know you, understand your goals & then devise a treatment plan. Ideally, we want to enhance your natural beauty, give you a confidence boost and allow a happy vibrant ‘you’ to shine through!
LESS IS MORE
Dermal filler can restore our youthful look at any age. It can almost become addictive to stay so young-looking with filler treatments, so how do you know when it’s too much of a good thing? Dermal fillers are used primarily to replace fat and bone loss associated with the process of ‘growing up’. at recontouring sagging skin, the result should leave you looking natural and refreshed – rather than plumped up and looking like a different person!
Dermal fillers can also be used
to achieve better balance and symmetry in the face or to enhance what nature has already gifted you with, but the end result is the same… you should look like the best version of you!
ARE THEY SMOKING OR KISSING LINES?
You may be familiar with the term ‘smokers lines’ which refer to the vertical lines above the top lip. But what if you’ve never smoked a cigarette in your life? These lines can be formed over time from the repetitive actions of puckering the lips not just to smoke, but when we sip through a straw or kiss someone. Just like only happy people get crows feet, the lines above the mouth can develop through positive activities and just plain ‘growing up’. So, eat healthy, have a positive attitude and be active. When you look in the mirror, admire your positive attributes – of which there are always many!
IS IT VANITY OR SANITY?
One of the most common phrases we hear in our clinic is, “am I just being vain?” Many of us misjudge that person wanting to gain confidence to return to work after
children or to get back out there after a relationship breakdown as someone seeking to feed their vanity. The invention of smartphones means we now carry around a constant influence with adverts that appear to have read our minds – & insecurities! It’s only recently have we realised how suggestible we are to this. There are also a multitude of us who still feel young on the inside and would love the person they see in the mirror to reflect this; thus, the company name…Truyou!
ONLY HAPPY PEOPLE GET CROWS FEET
Crow’s feet are the small lines and wrinkles that form around the outer corners of your eyes. Also known as laugh lines, crow’s feet earned their name because they resemble the footprints of crow. According to research, this laughter is the only type that generates raised activity in the anterior cortex, or the happy centre of the brain. So, in other words, the more you authentically laugh the more the body will wish you to seek out activities that achieve the same response. And it’s a known fact that people are drawn to those who smile a lot & are naturally upbeat.
NORTHLAND
GO NORTH
This issue we’re focusing on The North which holds a special kind of NZ magic. Once experienced, you know its idyllic untouched beaches, and unique microclimate hosting some of the most beautiful days and sunsets are to die for. The Bay of Islands is unique and has been a favourite for many New Zealanders for their winter and summer holidays over the years, but many are yet to find and experience the North, where so many places are still untouched. Where the natural bush provides backdrops for the sun kissed beaches and sparkling ocean. Where local art and delicious organic food is available. Where you can relax and unwind in a beautiful, natural environment.

The Duke Charlottes Kitchen Marsden EstateNZ ART TAILORED TO WEAR KALEO
Kaleo, a new Kiwi clothing brand and retail store in Kerikeri, is making waves in the Bay of Islands. With a focus on expressive New Zealand fabric prints and relaxed styles inspired by our Kiwi lifestyle, Kaleo Designs is capturing the hearts of coast bound enthusiasts across the country. From beachready wear to resort smart casual, it is a go-to destination for fashionsavvy locals and visitors alike. Owner, operator and art lover Christine Makaweo tells us her appreciation of the similarities in culture between Aotearoa and her homeland Hawaii inspired her in starting up this business.
The unique and defining feature of Kaleo is their NZ inspired fabric prints which are all original creations by local artists and printed in limited-runs. The designs all celebrate our shared love of the beauty, culture, art and mana of Aotearoa. These prints are then used to create Kaleo’s custom apparel and other products, blending creativity, color, comfort and premium quality into everything they make.
‘We want to put NZ art into what you wear every day. Our designs resonate with our customers because they express something familiar, happy, fun… but most importantly something local”, owner Christine Makaweo shares. One of their current limited-run designs features a Bay of Island beach scene, complete with the Hole in the Rock. Other designs include a Maori kowhaiwhai pattern, pipi shells, native flowers and more.
Each piece of clothing is a work of art and a canvas for personal expression. A visit to Kaleo is like visiting an art gallery of sorts, except you can buy the art in wearable form. Since its opening in January 2023, Kaleo has collaborated with 15 different NZ artists thus far on their initial designs. And they are continually looking to work with new artists to drop new print designs with each season. ‘It’s all about the art here at Kaleo, and we could not do it without the local talent. We love to share the stories about our artists both in conversations with our visitors, as well as in our packaging of our products. It offers them a personal connection to the design they fall in love with’.
Mastering the ART of Shirts
One of the standout items in Kaleo’s clothing line is their Kiwi Classic Mens Shirts, inspired by the famous “Hawaiian Shirt”, but done Kiwi style. Coming from Hawaii, Christine has a good understanding of what makes a really great shirt.“ The imagery should evoke a special memory or beloved pastime, the style should be timeless and tasteful, (no fast fashion here) and quality should always be the top priority. And of course, they need to be easycare ( no ironing) and comfortable to wear – the first shirt you pull from your closet to look and feel great for every occasion”.
Each shirt is crafted with care, from their premium reverse printed fabric to the intricate details of print-matched pockets and custom buttons. And their limited edition runs are collectible keepers that will hold a special place in your wardrobe for many, many years.” Pick a design you love… because you will have it for a very long time”.
There is something for everyone at Kaleo with a varied range of travelfriendly and colourful womenswear, screen printed apparel ( done in-house) with custom artwork, an assortment of accessories, unique gifts and souvenirs- all done with their original NZ designs.

ANIMAL RESCUE & REHOMING
‘Never Ending Story’ had been an animal rescue movement since 2007 when its founder moved to the Bay of Islands. Here she and a group of passionate, like-minded people saw the need to make a difference. They joined together to rescue and re-home animals and, in early 2017, formed Bay of Islands Animal Rescue Trust CC56296. The charity re-homes, adopts, fosters and transports an overwhelming number of animals each day including cats, horses, sheep, pigs, cows, ducks, chickens and even rabbits and an alpaca. The organisation still has a huge focus on dogs with an estimated 1500+ expected to be saved by our team each year.
Bay of Islands Animal Rescue will do its best to ensure no healthy dog is ever put down, but we need your help… Any donations, no matter how small, go a long way to helping our work.

PICK YOUR FLOWERS CAREFULLY
We’ve all heard about the ‘Slow Food’ movement, the art of good living for ourselves and for the environment - we check where our fruit is grown and if our eggs are free range. But what about our flowers? The ‘Slow Flower’ movement is gaining momentum in New Zealand as consumers become more aware of the harsh chemicals flowers are treated with, the carbon emissions and the poor labour practices in the commercial flower industry. Who knew when we sniffed that beautiful red rose we were sniffing up poisonous toxins. Such a shocker!
Buying local flowers is just like buying local food. By being selective & choosing the safest & most naturally grown, you are actually being an activist.
Candice Richards from Brookbay Blooms in The Bay of Islands is a small scale, flower farmer. She started growing flowers in 2022, growing a range of annuals and perennials so that she could provide beautiful, seasonal flowers to brides and local floral lovers.
She uses sustainable farming practices preserving biodiversity and eco systems. The local community get to enjoy a seasonal variety like beautiful Dahlias, Zinnias, old fashioned roses or sweet peas and many other flowers not normally sold because they don’t ship well. She sells her bouquets, in Summer, at a local Four Square in Waipapa, as well as direct to florists and brides. Their flowers only travel 6 km to the store and are picked and conditioned the night before. You can bury your face in them too… no nasty chemicals or sprays! You can’t get any fresher than that and they actually smell like flowers – imagine that!
Rebecka Keeling owns Slow Booms in Matakana and she grows fresh flowers and herbs. She started Slow Blooms because she wanted to provide a space for her visitors to experience flowers growing in their natural season, and to be able to pick them as if it was their own garden. When her family relocated from Sweden to New Zealand six years ago, they went through a longer period of renting, and
Rebecka really missed being able to pick sustainably grown herbs and flowers in her home garden.
You could not be in this industry if you did not love flowers. ‘I started Slow Blooms to educate and bring attention to the issue with the unsustainable flowers we often see, which are flown in from greenhouses in faraway countries where they’re grown hydroponically with harsh chemicals. We can grow almost all sorts of flowers here in New Zealand - just not all year round’.
Rebecka thinks the tide is turning and people in New Zealand are changing. ‘I love it when people tell me - either in person in the garden, or on our social media pages - that they never thought about where their flowers came from before, but they will from now on’.
Their visitors who are coming to pick flowers and participate in their workshops definitely appreciate seasonal flowers, and also that they are grown in the ground without artificial fertilisers, hence contributing to the local soil web and ecosystem. One of Rebecka’s favourite things is when parents bring their children to pick flowers to mark the changing seasons - like the dad who brought his son in spring to pick daffodils. What a great way of educating our children on the seasonality of nature!
The industry is reliant on weather and it’s been a bit of a rough start to the year for many farmers due to the rain and wind. Rebecka hopes to see an increased focus on locally grown produce - both foods and flowers - with communities supporting their local growers. ‘I’m looking forward to hosting more
flower workshops, expanding my growing area, and ultimately I’m looking at diversifying into also growing bananas and other subtropical plants. Just like flowers, these fruits are currently being imported from overseas at great cost to the environment, even though we can grow them here in Aotearoa’.
Vanessa Bennett, editor of EYE magazine fell in love with flowers and gardening when she moved North to Kerikeri. ‘We have a lot of land so it was logical to plant something. I now have a love affair with flowers, which really make me feel good. I believe most women love them. I started with planting hibiscus and roses – I hardly knew anything about gardening, just bits and pieces from occasionally watching my Mother in her garden. I then planted Dahlia and they are incredible! They came up everywhere and I was continually picking fresh flowers for the table. I checked out the prices of Dahlia and was shocked to see in one florist they were $60 for 3. Flowers are not cheap so it is a real thrill to grow them yourself.’
So next time you buy flowers for yourself or someone you love… ask your florist “are they grown in New Zealand, or where do they come from?” It’s a relevant question we all need to be asking to make a stand to support our local growers and to buy New Zealand grown flowers.
A good watch on You Tube is the ‘Billion Dollar Flower Market’

SHERATON FIJI GOLF & BEACH RESORT
Escape to a paradise all your own at Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, an idyllic beachfront oasis in Nadi. Referred to as the ‘Beating heart of Fiji’, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort is the perfect resort for your Fijian getaway – dazzling sun, sand and surf.
Their latest guest experience is the ‘Feed in Sand Ritual’ – at its premier restaurant – the Tatavu Grill & Bar. The ritual begins the moment guests arrive at the restaurant and is based on the traditional Fijian custom of taking one’s shoes off before entering a home and enjoying barefoot dining in community gatherings, so guests are invited to do the same and dine with their feet in the sand. The experience continues after dinner, as guests enjoy a luxurious, floral foot-bath to rinse off their sandy feet, before wearing their shoes again.
Whatever the occasion, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach resort has you covered: enjoy a round of golf at their award-winning Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, swim in lagoon-style pools, or simply sit back and enjoy a hand-crafted cocktail and relax.

I can hear you all suffering in economy, but I am happy sitting in my roomy business class flight. ‘All that for such a short flight?’ I hear you ask. ‘Well I say, there is nothing wrong with always seeking the best in life and luxury travel is an art. Finding the best restaurant, the most luxurious hotel, and the best tourist activity. Even great tourists, on unorganized tours, find things can go terribly wrong if you are not in the know!’
The concierge is always my ‘go to’. He or she will help us find the best things to do. They are always so well versed in the 5 Cs, culture, cuisine, community, customs and content. David Luff, chief concierge at the Park Hyatt Sydney gives us the best things to do in Sydney.
Samsonite Travel Tips
LUXURY TRAVEL
Destination Sydney.
It is a ‘must’ to take in a performance at the Sydney Opera House, then the following day to charter a luxury yacht/boat for a tour around the harbour. You get a totally different perspective of the city whilst relaxing and drinking champagne. He tells us there is an amazing Seaplane ‘fly and dine’ experience that is well worth doing. Local knowledge is so important, and his favorite restaurants to recommend are Quay and Aria. Then when you are exhausted from touring, eating, and shopping in the most gorgeous Sydney shops, book into the spa at the Park Hyatt Sydney, a luxurious experience that leaves you feeling soft and fluffy and brand new. If you have more time, a helicopter tour over Sydney is a thrill or a day trip to the Blue Mountains and/or the Hunter Valley.
Pack light –
You never use everything you pack and take a light suitcase. Samsonite C-Lite is perfect. Always take a cashmere scarf –It’s light, and it fits snuggly into your handbag, perfect to throw around your shoulders on the plane or if the weather turns.
Always put your shoes at the bottom and roll up items like T-shirts and jeans. Be clever with bags –Use a toiletry pouch that’s lined with a plastic material to contain any spills, along with another small case for chargers, adaptors, and other electrical items. Use shoe bags to keep dirt from transferring onto your clothes, and throw an extra bag in for dirty laundry.
Hydrate, drink water, and moisturize –
We can’t say this enough.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions –The best information comes from the locals.
Don’t look like a tourist –Walking around looking at a map will cause you problems.
Remember if you’re not carrying the right carry -on bag at an airport, chances are you’ll find yourself struggling at security checkpoints to find your tickets and ID. (Worst-case scenario: opening up your entire carry-on luggage on the floor to search for what you need!) Instead, opt for styles with plenty of easy access side pockets, and keep items in the same spots every trip so you’ll instinctively remember where to find everything.
Unfiltered and authentic, The Dining Room by James Viles will take you on a rugged but refined journey through parts of Australia where the ingredients exist in their natural habitat.

WHEN IS A GYM NOT A GYM?
It’s not just new year’s resolutions that get you thinking about joining a gym.
It can also be challenges like overeating during lockdown and most importantly, the need to future-proof your health in a densely aging population!
But what is it that stops you going? It’s the gym culture – the body proud and body beautiful, the intimidating muscle men and the fanatical spin junkies who all look like professional dancers. So how can you get fit without going to a gym? How can a gym be one without the negative culture?
The answer is simple. It’s when a gym is in fact a club and NEXT GEN is exactly that! The next generation of gyms is an inclusive, family friendly health club that has programmes and facilities for all ages and all levels of fitness.
The team at NEXT GEN have developed sports activities and programs that embrace your starting level and challenge you to compete with yourself and/or with others. Through swimming, tennis, spin classes and HIIT classes, you can get a diverse work out that keeps you engaged and develops better cognitive and physical skills.
Working out has now become a lifestyle choice and certainly far more of a community engagement than the days of chain gyms pumping out weights and loud trance music. Step inside the world of NEXT GEN located in the heart of Parnell, that welcomes any level of fitness with personal trainers on hand to help you achieve your personal health goals.
We speak with the team, Nicky, Kirsten, Carlos and Nicola and ask them to share the magic they create and how we can all get on board!
What is the philosophy behind NEXT GEN?
Your time is now! Time is a precious commodity for everyone and at NEXT GEN, we combine multiple facilities together so that our members can enjoy a 360o Health and Lifestyle experience.
Upon arrival, what would one expect to experience that differs from other gyms?
As you enter NEXT GEN, you can always expect a warm welcome with staff that are genuinely happy and proud to be a part of the Next Gen team and what we stand for as a health and Lifestyle club. As you enjoy the convenience of collecting a towel from our reception team, you’ll then walk past our incredibly talented café team, who will be serving up hot specialty coffees and delicious meals to suit all tastes and dietary requirements. From there you’ll have the option of enjoying our incredible indoor pool area, where you will even find a spa, sauna, and steam rooms! Or head up to our gym where you can enjoy the upbeat environment and get in a good workout before heading up to the rooftop pool, to lap up the sun while you relax.
How does the main gym floor work and what’s on offer?
Our gym offers maximum variety. From gym floor classes that are bound to challenge and get you engaged with group training mentality, to plate and pin loaded machines for those wanting a heavy push in their training. We offer large open spaces to suit high intensity training and dynamic movements, with also the option of a more private area for those that may want a little more privacy as they work out and learn how best to manage their workout routines. Our gym also offers a dedicated Spin room with Stages bike technology to offer a superior spin experience. We have both instructor lead classes and a full virtual class timetable, offering fun virtual rides from 60’s music themed to high intensity Tabata style.
Group fitness classes are included in the membership! An extensive group fitness timetable catering to all abilities and training preference. Those wanting something a little more relaxing can come in and join us for a Pilates or yoga class.
How can members involve their kids? Are they welcome at NEXT GEN?
Children & Families are always welcome at Next Gen, and we offer a wide range of activities and options for all ages. We are a family club and always look to include all ages where we can. We have several dedicated kids’ classes, offering interactive fun and confidence building for our 4 –11-year-olds. We also offer family classes where parents can join in and have some fun.
Next Gen offers a holiday activity program every school holiday, which is very popular here at Next Gen. The children get to enjoy painting, swimming, tennis activities, organised play times, and even experience our amazing café kitchen to make their very own pizza and food creations. Swimming is another core activity that we have for children and families here at Next Gen. We offer extensive learn to swim programs as well as private training for individuals who may need some extra help.
Lastly, we offer the convenience of an in-house crèche for those that need to get a quick work out in but have their young ones at home. Our amazing crèche carers will entertain and take care of your little ones while you get to work out, or relax in the club.
Tell us more about your personal trainers?
We pride ourselves on only having the best of the best, which is why our trainers are specialists in their field. Our professionals have extensive backgrounds in rehabilitation, spine and joint health, holistic coaching, scientific based programing, training and personal coaching. We don’t just offer weight loss or muscle gain, we offer personalised training with professionals who can not only assist you in reaching your individual goals, but in the process prevent injuries, correct & relieve ongoing injuries, and most importantly take care of you both physically and mentally throughout your health and fitness journey.
How do your Spin and HIIT classes work – do you have to be an expert?
Our HIIT and Spin classes cater to all abilities. Our classes are carefully put together by our gym team to offer low/ high impact exercises and routines, so that you can be a beginner or advanced and get an amazing workout in all within the same class in the shortest time frame.
How do the membership fees work and do you have family packages?
We have different multiple tiers of memberships that can be tailored to your needs. We do indeed have family memberships on offer as well as a suite of other options tailored to the individual needs.
What is the best way to see if NEXT GEN is right for you?
Either call us and speak to one of the team or come into the club and we can discuss your goals, give you a tour of the facilities and get you on the right path. Come and have a look around to see the difference a club environment has over a standard gym! So, forget missed resolutions and gym phobias and start designing your path back to vitality with NEXT GEN. They have the right team and the best programs to make your health and fitness both fun and rewarding!

MR OPINIONATOR
ON ENTRY INTO THE U.S
On the very odd occasion that travel via the USA is unavoidable, I am confronted with how to convince a Customs person that I have not one tiny scrap of ambition to live in his hellhole of a country.
Of course, one may not put it that way, because Officer Perez is bored, angry and packing serious heat and, as soon as he heard the word: ‘hell …’, he’d be yelling ‘gun’ and I’d end up the colander all Pastafarians love.
So, dear readers, I have planned a routine to get me transiting USA with only a modest chance of getting killed or 3 life sentences plus 478 years in the Fed Pen.
The first hurdle is actually getting to speak with Officer Perez or, put another way, avoiding being called the ‘deceased’ when it is immediately declared to be a righteous shooting. It’s a dangerous time when you are standing at the red line. Pay attention to the position of your feet and have ready access to all the paperwork which is totally unnecessary because you are in transit. Speak when spoken to; don’t volunteer comments about how long it is taking; respond forthwith to barked commands.
Somewhere in amongst all this, Officer Perez is going to ask: ‘Do you have any intention of staying in the United States for longer than 6 months?’ If he were not frightened for his life, Mr Opinionator’s preferred response would be: ‘Do you mean, do I have a current intention to bolt from the transit area, bust through an unknown number of security doors to landside, there to shoot my way to the glorious freedom which is life in the USA? If that is the case, dear, dear Officer Perez, I have no such intention.’ Were that the response, somewhere along the line Officer Perez is going to infer sarcasm, leading to ‘gun’ and immediate death.
What follows is the proper response, delivered with your hands in the air and in full view of the security cameras. Please note, I do not guarantee Officer Perez or other heroes on the front line will not shout ‘gun’ and kill you dead and that the camera footage ends up with Epstein’s cell footage and not locatable.
Start with praise for Officer Perez: ‘That’s an interesting and insightful question, Your Officership.’ But then change tone … slowly … and we are ready for launch (hands in air): For me to want to live in a country, I think, first of all, that country would need to be a democracy. As you know, Officer, ‘democracy’, essentially, is rule by the majority of the people. At state level, this country is nowhere near a democracy because of voter suppression and gerrymandering. As things stand in many states, it seems possible that a state legislature can draw a districting map, which has 2 million voters for one party in one district (for one seat in the House) and allocate half a million voters for their own party over 15 districts for the reward of 15 seats in the House. You are clearly an erudite man, Officer Perez, so you will understand my quoting Leonard Cohen on the subject: ‘Everybody knows that the dice are loaded.’
The second-most important requirement for me would be a trustworthy judicial system. You might not appreciate it, Officer Perez, but having a political party select the senior levels of the judiciary is not a sound practice. Having the public vote for Judges at lower levels defies belief. I could not live in a country where the judicial system is essentially and irretrievably flawed.
Within the heading of ‘Judicial System’, comes ‘Judicial Officers’. In my world, Officer, judicial officers give allegiance to the law above all else and are trusted. Along with such
allegiance comes the willful setting aside of personal interests; one’s reputation as a solid jurist is the prize. And where there is the slightest risk that the public might see a Judge as ‘interested’ in an outcome over which the Judge has domain, mostly the Judge will recuse themself or there is a process by which recusal can be argued if the Judge does not feel tainted. As a consequence, you’d never end up with a Judge hearing a case on the legality of abortion where that Judge has written articles for Catholic magazines denouncing the procedure as murder.
If I were to live in a country, I’d want to be proud of its judicial system. As I’ve already said that your judicial system is not trustworthy, it follows that I could not be proud of it. But it is worse than that, officer; I would be positively ashamed of it. Your Supreme Court is an open flesh wound, weeping pus into the Courts below and into government and public life. Its illegitimacy is not helped by the Merrick Garland/Coney Barrett debacle (an example, also, of the dangers of political appointment of judges) but, I recall, all too well, all of the assurances given by Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Coney Barrett to secure appointment, to the effect Roe v Wade was settled law, cast aside at first opportunity.
The miasma of corruption permeating the concept of justice oozes, currently, from Clarence Thomas and his wife. So, she’s an active supporter of the Big Lie and he dishes out dissenting judgments in respect of related events. She gets paid vast sums just before important voting rights cases. He hides gifts from Harlan Crow. Crow owns his mother’s house: ‘one sign of deviation from you, Young Clarence, and your mama’s on the street!’ And the Chief Justice refuses to address things? Separation of powers gobbledygook. So, Roberts is now compromised; it’s his watch, after all.
Given that this is a discussion at the Customs desk, Officer, and there are people waiting, I’ll limit myself to one more reason why I would have no intention of living in the US of A: Why live in a place of which I would be ashamed, and deeply ashamed at that?
Cursorily:
So many of you hate the LBGTQ and trans community irrationally.
You let the savages pass laws hurting citizens who just want to have a meaningful life.
You let a vocal minority of crazy Christians force their utter bullshit beliefs and faux morality on the rest of the populace:
If your god doesn’t want you to have an abortion, you listen to your god but don’t expect the women in my family to ruin their lives because of your imaginary friend.
Book banning?! I don’t think you lot actually understand how backward that makes you look. Hitler burned books.
Michelangelo’s “David” is a sculpture of a man. A man has a penis. Half the world owns a penis. Most of the other half has played with one; what am I missing?
Some state legislatures insist on creationism to evolution – idiots.
A truly abominable and lawless human being still gets 40%+ in a vote for your Presidency. ‘Everybody knows that the captain lied’.
A public health system which is completely at the mercy of Big Pharma and medical insurers and where a significant majority of the citizenry think it is ok to let people die because they don’t have health insurance (until they, themselves, lose their job and lose their insurance). ‘The poor stay poor the rich get rich. That’s how it goes. Everybody knows.’
I don’t think, Officer Perez, that I have mentioned the Second Amendment. I couldn’t bear to live in a country where kids get shot through doors because they rang the doorbell or get killed because they drove into the wrong driveway. According to the truthteller, Fox News, a recent poll disclosed:
87% said they support requiring criminal background checks for all gun buyers;
81% support raising the age requirement to buy guns to 21;
80% support requiring mental health checks for all gun purchasers;
80% said police should be allowed take guns away from people considered a danger to themselves or others;
61% supported banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons. Yet Congress, sated by NRA and manufacturers’ donations, sits on its hands. Prohibition was brought in and maintained by a minority, you might not know.
Officer Perez, I haven’t even mentioned racism and misogyny but that would take more time than I have and I am already convinced that, given I am an intelligent, sensitive and moral person, for the reasons given and for countless more I could raise, there’s no way, Jose, ….. ooops … ‘GUNNNNNN’.

Chance for Change
A new charitable initiative has launched to reduce the number of racist, hate-related, and extremist tattoos worn in New Zealand society. Research suggests one in five adult New Zealanders, around 800,000 people, has at least one tattoo. Industry experts say around a tenth of those are seeking to have them removed and approximately 800 of these will be classified as promoting racism or hate.

The new Chance for Change programme will offer Kiwis with tattoos featuring racist symbols, images, hate-related words and slogans or extremist ideologies free removal. Experts say the removal of offensive tattoos can cost up to tens of thousands of dollars and could be a barrier to progression in life. However, the new charitable initiative offers a pathway for participants to rid themselves of the last vestige of an idealogy they no longer identify with. Kiwis wanting to apply for the free removal will go through a review process, which could include discussions with probationary officers, to ensure they have genuinely changed their attitude. It is hoped the programme will be able to support dozens of Kiwis who have made a clear change in their life but find they are still being constantly judged and missing employment opportunities.
Mike Anderson, CEO of Think AgainLaser Clinic NZ, and founder of Chance for Change, says their research suggests around 80,000 Kiwis have a tattoo they want removed - and around one percent of these will be ‘hate tattoos’.

Kenwood MultiPro GO Food Processor $149.99 In Storm Blue & Red ClayFROM CHILE, TO HAWKE’S BAY, WITH LOVE
21 years ago, after meeting and falling in love in the vineyards of Chile, Emma Lowe and Marcelo Nuñez moved back to New Zealand and began planting their vineyard at Crownthorpe, Hawke’s Bay and so begins the story of the best little vineyard you’ve (probably) never heard of.
Out in the back of beyond, overlooking the upper reaches of the Ngaruroro River, but only 30 minutes from Napier, sits a beautiful little vineyard. As one of the first to be established in this cooler climate subregion of Hawke’s Bay, Emma and Marcelo are considered pioneers of this special area and they’re fiercely proud of their little slice of heaven and what it creates.
The Monowai vineyard is planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and
Merlot and Emma and Marcelo grow and make all their wines on site in their custom-built winery, right next to their family home. Their focus is on crafting wines that speak of their unique terroir and higher altitude, inland location. This translates in the bottle to wines of great fruit purity with acid driven length and ageability. The Estate range celebrates all the varieties grown on the property and is all about easy drinking, fresh and fruity wines, that are simply delicious. The Upper Reaches range consists of a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir and a Merlot and is only made in truly exceptional vintages. These age worthy wines represent the best the vineyard and winery can make and receive VIP treatment from budburst to bottling, using techniques learned from their winemaking adventures in Chile and beyond.
Monowai Estate may not have a cellar door but does offer tours and tastings by appointment for groups of 6 or more. Bookings can be made via the website (www. monowai.co.nz) and visits include a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes and even taste wine from tank or barrel, alongside the current releases in bottle. The annual Open Day, usually held in Spring, is an increasingly popular event held at the winery and offers a very enjoyable opportunity to while away an afternoon with wine tasting, vineyard tours, live music and platters. Join the mailing list or follow @MonowaiEstate on Facebook or Instagram for information on this year’s event and to find out more about Hawke’s Bay’s best kept secret.

WAVING THE APP SPARKING A CELEBRATION OF MIGRATION AND UNITY IN DIVERSITY
In an ever-changing and increasingly interconnected world, we acknowledge the courage, curiosity, and determination of the ancient explorers who braved the waves and ventured forth into the unknown. Their spirit of adventure has laid the foundation for the diverse and vibrant society we enjoy today. Inspired by their journeys, we have named our movement ‘Waving’ - a tribute to these trailblazers and themigrants who have followed in their wake.
A PLATFORM FOR INTEGRATION
Waving is not just a name but a commitment to bridging gaps and fostering a sense of belonging for all. Our app is designed to serve as a platform for the migrant community to break down barriers and integrate seamlessly into their new homes. By keeping our users informed of the latest events, we empower them to immerse themselves in local culture and embrace the diversity that surrounds them.
A COMMITMENT TO LOCAL BUSINESSES
We recognise the vital role that local businesses play in creating vibrant and inclusive communities. Waving is committed to supporting these enterprises by providing an affordable, accessible platform for them to showcase their offerings to the migrant community. By encouraging businesses to highlight their most dynamic and engaging aspects, we aim to foster genuine connections between entrepreneurs and their customers through our transaction-based business model, meaning our business users only pay for conversions instead of impressions.
A MOVEMENT TO CALL FOR UNITY IN DIVERSITY
Waving is more than just an app - it is a movement, a call to action for all of us to embrace our shared humanity’s rich history and heritage. Through connection, understanding, and support, we can create a world that celebrates migration, values diversity and fosters unity. SALMON HEAVEN
All seasons are great for Salmon dishes – salmon lovers devour this product in summer and winter. Not only is salmon a delicious snack or meal but it’s an amazing source of protein and being rich in astaxanthin makes it ideal for maintaining bone health, preventing muscle loss, and helping the skin heal and repair. It also helps reduce the signs of aging and protect us against UV damage. It’s the perfect food!
Salmon Heaven is located in Parnell and the Bush Inn Centre, NZ and is also a thriving online store. They offer chilled and smoked Salmon and lots of other delicious items. They are a family-owned business that has been doing good stuff for nearly 30 years.
Managing Director Henry Studholme saw an opportunity when he purchased a 3.64ha property in Hororata that included an abandoned honey processing plant in very good order.
Wondering what kind of processing he could venture into, a friend suggested he smoke salmon. With that, Henry took himself off to the local library and researched for hours old Scottish smoked salmon recipes. He brought an old smoker at an auction and, with a business partner, embarked on a product development trial. And the rest, as they say, is history.
What was developed has evolved into a unique and flavorsome brand Sovereign Smoked Salmon and Sovereign Smoked Mussels loved by Kiwis and salmon lovers the world over.

ELEGANT DESIGN THE CORNERSTONE OF NEW AWARD-WINNING, FULLY ELECTRIC KIA EV6
When Kia designers first started thinking about the new EV6, they had the luxury of doing so with a ‘clean slate’ in mind, as they were developing an entirely new vehicle from the ground up.
This brief enabled them to craft a machine of beauty with elegant proportions, carefully considered aesthetics and an eye-catching and emotive design language.
The appearance of the new model is dramatic and captivating. Character lines run along the bottom of doors and curve up towards the rear wheel arches, creating a sense of forward motion even when stationary.
The ground-breaking electric vehicle was created according to Kia’s new design philosophy ‘Opposites United,’ which
guarantees a powerful visual identity with contrasting combinations of sharp stylistic elements and sculptural shapes.
It also symbolises the brand’s new direction as a leading sustainable mobility solutions provider and the EV6 has been the recipient of numerous motoring and design accolades.
Shortly after being crowned 2022 European Car of the Year, the Kia EV6 claimed overall victory in the prestigious 2022 Red Dot Design Awards. The 50-strong expert jury of the renowned international design competition awarded the EV6 with the ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ accolade for its pioneering and forward-looking design. The EV6 offers one of the most spacious interiors in its class, features a driving range in excess of 500 km^
and 800-volt ultra-fast charging technology that enables the vehicle to be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes. It is also rated to tow up to 1600kg braked.^
In New Zealand, the EV6 has enjoyed similar success, both in terms of awards and also on the sales front. Kiwis have found the new model provides an outstanding all-round experience for driver and passengers, is full of leading edge EV technology and is a stylish, statement making entry into the world of electric vehicles and sustainable motoring.
