Archaeological sites, intangible artefacts and keys, and a deep affinity in bridging cosmic worlds with stories and imagination. Artist Jay Horan explores ontological patterns in life and scientific research to create correlated cosmic themed artwork, music, literature and film. Horan’s approach to art is a labour-intensive process that combines experimental mediums in materials and traditional crafting techniques to discover fusions when creating projects. Horan’s work offers viewers to explore art in the form of intangible artefacts with thought-provoking inquiries.
Life experiences and travelling shapes a significant role in untethering Horan’s creativity. His latest projects were influenced by his stay with a nomadic Bedouin tribe in the heart of the desert at Wadi Rum, also known as Valley of the Moon, in Jordan. The experience from this captivating cosmic desert landscape infused Horan’s curiosity and creativity.
Horan’s abstract art piece, ‘The Johari Window in Retrospective’ was exhibited in New York at the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum. Horan presented his arts-based research and creative projects at several conferences, including the London Arts-Based Research Centre in London and OPSITARA in Invercargill. ABI TOBIA OWNER OF THE NEWEST FINE JEWELLERY STORY ON PARNELL ROADSOLITAIRE DE PARNELL.
Abi, congratulations on being recognized by EYE magazine as one of the Women to Watch in business. Your journey from an art painter to the owner of Solitaire De Parnell is truly inspiring. Could you share with us how your early exposure to jewellery and gemstones through your mother’s passion influenced your transition into the world of fine jewellery?
Thank you for the recognition and the opportunity to share my journey with you. My early exposure to jewellery and gemstones through my mother’s passion played a significant role in shaping my transition into the world of fine jewellery.
As a young girl, I was fascinated
by the beauty and sophistication of the jewellery pieces my mother collected and wore. She had a keen eye for quality craftsmanship and exquisite design, and she often shared stories about the history and significance of different pieces in her collection. This exposure ignited my curiosity and appreciation for the artistry and symbolism behind fine jewellery.
While growing up, I developed a deep love for art and aesthetics. I pursued a career as an art painter, channelling my creative energy into expressing myself through painting. However, my passion for jewellery never waned, and I found myself increasingly drawn to the world of fine jewellery as a form of wearable art. My transition
into the jewellery industry more than twenty years ago was a natural evolution of my artistic journey. Today, I founded Solitaire De Parnell with a vision to curate a collection of exquisite jewellery pieces that embody beauty, craftsmanship, and elegance.
Through Solitaire De Parnell, I strive to create a platform where artistry and craftsmanship converge, showcasing handcrafted jewellery pieces from renowned designers and brands from Italy and around the world. My early exposure to jewellery and gemstones instilled in me a deep appreciation for the art of jewellery-making, and it continues to inspire me as I navigate my path in the world of fine jewellery.
Solitaire De Parnell’s collection is truly exquisite, featuring handcrafted jewellery pieces from renowned Italian designers and European brands. Can you tell us more about the influence of Italian design and craftsmanship on your curated selection of jewellery?
Certainly! Italian design and craftsmanship have long been celebrated in the world of jewellery for their exceptional quality, attention to details, and innovative designs. There are several key aspects of the influence of Italian design and craftsmanship on Solitaire De Parnell’s curated selection of jewellery. First, Italian artisans are renowned for their mastery of traditional jewellerymaking techniques passed down through generations. Each piece is crafted with precision and care, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship that stands the test of time. Additionally, Italian designers are known for pushing the boundaries of traditional jewellery design, often
incorporating innovative techniques and materials to create striking and unique pieces. Solitaire De Parnell’s collection showcases this innovation, featuring pieces that are both timeless and contemporary. Moreover, Italian jewellery design is often characterized by its sophisticated and elegant aesthetics. From sleek and modern designs to detailed and ornate pieces, Italian jewellery reflects a refined sense of style that appeals to determining clients seeking luxury and exclusivity. Italian artisans are meticulous in their attention to detail, ensuring that every facet of a piece is carefully considered and executed to perfection. This commitment to craftsmanship is evident in the exquisite detailing found in the jewellery featured in Solitaire De Parnell’s collection. Finally, Italy has a rich cultural heritage that serves as a constant source of inspiration for its designers. Whether drawing from Renaissance art or contemporary fashion trends, Italian jewellery often reflects a deep appreciation for versatility and aesthetics.
I’m fascinated by the mention of antique jewellery pieces in your collection and the availability of natural loose diamonds for sale. How do these vintage pieces inspire your curation process, what stories do they carry within them, and what are the advantages of selling loose diamonds?
Vintage jewellery pieces hold a special place in my heart and play a role in inspiring my curation process for Solitaire De Parnell’s collection. Each vintage piece carries with it a unique history, craftsmanship, and story that resonates with collectors and enthusiasts alike. Making them cherished treasures for generations to come.
When curating vintage jewellery for my collection, I’m drawn to pieces that evoke a sense of nostalgia and timeless beauty. These pieces often serve as a source of inspiration, influencing the overall aesthetic and theme of the collection. By incorporating these pieces
into my collection, I aim to preserve and celebrate the rich history and heritage of jewellery-making. Vintage jewellery often features complex designs, unique gemstone cuts, and exquisite detailing that are characteristic of the time period in which they were created. These design elements inspire me to seek pieces that showcase exceptional craftsmanship and artistic expression. Despite their age, many vintage jewellery pieces possess a timeless beauty that transcends trends and fads. Incorporating these pieces into my collection allows me to offer clients a selection of jewellery that is both classic and enduring in its appeal.
As for the loose diamonds we offer for sale, loose natural diamond stones can be fascinating objects that inspire creativity and storytelling in various ways. Diamonds are renowned for their beauty and rarity. They’re formed under intense pressure and heat deep within the Earth, symbolizing endurance and resilience. We at Solitaire De Parnell offer natural loose diamonds to allow our customers to customize their jewellery pieces according to their preferences. They can select the diamond stone they want based on factors like cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight, enabling them to create a truly unique and personalized piece of jewellery.
We can work with our clients to create custom settings that complement the chosen diamond, resulting in one-ofa-kind jewellery creations tailored to individual tastes and styles. Additionally, some customers may prefer to select their diamonds separately from the setting to ensure they get the highest-quality stone possible. Solitaire De Parnell can cater to these discerning customers who prioritize diamond quality and authenticity by offering loose diamonds. Our loose diamonds range comes exclusively from New York. They are all GIA-certified, and we can thoroughly ensure the authenticity, quality, and ethical sourcing of the diamonds we offer.
The ambiance of a jewellery store plays a significant role in the overall experience for customers. Can you describe the design philosophy behind Solitaire De Parnell’s store and how you ensure it is welcoming to every visitor who steps through the door?
Absolutely, our design philosophy for the Solitaire De Parnell store is centred around creating a luxurious yet welcoming environment that enhances the overall shopping experience for our customers. Hence, the design of our store reflects the timeless elegance and sophistication of the jewellery we offer. We strive to exceed expectations at every turn, ensuring every visitor who steps through the door of Solitaire De Parnell feels valued, inspired, and eager to return.
Everyone deserves to adorn themselves with something beautiful adding a touch of elegance and luxury to life’s everyday moments.

Dr. Wan, what inspired you to pursue a career in dentistry, and how did Hello Dental come to be?
My journey into dentistry began during my time as a dental assistant in East Auckland. This experience allowed me to see the profound impact good dental care can have on people’s lives. I pursued a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Otago University, graduating in 2012, with a vision of providing holistic and conservative dental care. Hello Dental was born out of my desire to create a practice that prioritises patient comfort, uses state-of-the-art technology, and maintains a high standard of care without compromising affordability. I also love to see people become more confident in their smiles.
Your practice has received numerous accolades, including the Platinum Elite Invisalign Award. Can you share the philosophy that drives your success?
At Hello Dental, our philosophy revolves around minimal, gentle, and bio-mimicry dentistry. We believe that prevention is better than cure. This means avoiding unnecessary treatments and focusing on preserving natural tooth structure. Our use of digital dentistry, from intraoral scanners to 3D imaging, allows us to deliver precise and comfortable care. The Platinum Elite Invisalign Award reflects our commitment to excellence in orthodontics, helping patients achieve beautiful smiles with minimal discomfort.
How do you ensure that you stay at the forefront of dental technology and techniques?
Continuous learning is crucial in dentistry. I regularly attend conferences both domestically and internationally to stay updated on the latest advancements. This commitment to education has allowed us to integrate cuttingedge technology like diode lasers
and 3D printing into our practice. By staying informed and adaptable, we ensure our patients receive the best possible care.
What advice do you have for women aspiring to start their own business, particularly in the healthcare industry?
My advice is to stay passionate and committed to your vision. Building a business, especially in healthcare, requires a deep understanding of your field and a genuine desire to improve the lives of your clients. Surround yourself with a supportive team, seek mentorship, and never stop learning. Transparency and excellent service build long-term relationships with your clients and suppliers. Remember, challenges are opportunities for growth, so embrace them with resilience and determination. Plus do what you love and make it fun – that is key to a happy life.
How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life?
Balancing work and personal life is challenging but essential. I cherish time with my two young boys and involve myself in their activities. My husband and I are active in our church, which provides a strong community support system. Setting boundaries and prioritizing family time helps maintain a healthy work-life balance. It’s also important to delegate and trust your team to manage the practice effectively.
What are your future aspirations for Hello Dental and your career?
My aspiration for Hello Dental is to continue evolving with the latest dental advancements while maintaining our core values of minimal, gentle, and bio-mimicry dentistry. I aim to expand our services and reach more communities, ensuring that
exceptional dental care is accessible to all. Personally, I hope to inspire and mentor the next generation of women in dentistry, sharing my journey and insights to help them achieve their dreams.
What message would you like to send to young women who look up to you?
To young women aspiring to make a difference, I want to say: believe in yourself and your abilities. The road to success is not without obstacles, but with passion, dedication, and resilience, you can overcome them. Stay true to your values, keep learning, and never be afraid to seek help or mentorship. Your journey is unique, and your contributions are invaluable. Keep pushing forward, and you’ll achieve great things.
Dr. Shirley Wan’s dedication to her craft and her compassionate approach to patient care make her a true inspiration. Her journey with Hello Dental exemplifies the power of perseverance, innovation, and a genuine passion for helping others.

Can you tell us about your journey as an entrepreneur and how Eurotech Design came to be?
Certainly! My journey as an entrepreneur began at Westpac bank but I had a passion for design and a drive to create spaces that inspire and elevate experiences. EYE MAGAZINE TALKS TO INA FEIMI AND ERIN SOKOLOWSKY, FOUNDERS OF THE FEIMSO CONCEPT AND APP.
Firstly what inspired you to create Feimso, and what drives your passion for fashion and technology?
Erin: Actually the inspiration for feimso came from feeling the pain caused from the fashion industry. Our 2 small businesses stopped trading during Covid, people went into pjs and we were left with a lot of unsold stock and accumulated bills. It was hard, because not only the world as we knew it went into a pause but at the same time everything was changing so fast. Attention went towards the online world, the new way to connect, interact, find solutions and consume. Ina came up with the idea after a Tony Robbins seminar. She disappeared on me for two whole weeks. Got me worried sick, as we used to talk multiple times a day till one day I got a message: We are going into tech. She pitched to me and I was ALL IN from day 1. Together we pivoted our business model from renting our own clothes to creating a platform where everyone can make money from their wardrobe. And that was just the start. Now, 3 years later feimso is live, beta testing the first all-inclusive fashion platform in NZ, and preparing behind the scenes to lunch in new markets like Australia, UAE, Saudi, Singapore etc.
In a competitive industry, what strategies have you implemented to ensure Feimso stands out and remains successful?
Ina: The pandemic was just a pressure test for our solution boards. Today I had a webinar with 20 different people from the fashion industry and we spoke about how the industry is unhealthy. The main problem is that fashion as we know it, is dictated by these big luxury houses which are owned by huge corporations led mostly by men whilst women are the biggest consumers. The fashion industry creates all these clothes, accessories, beauty, products, fast trends, and forces us into believing that we like them, we need them. But do we? The answer to consumerism isn’t to create variations of common goods. It’s to change your relationship with material goods. Look what Uber, Airbnb, Facebook, Google did to the respective industry. They gave power to the people. And that’s exactly what our ultimate goal is; to empower and support people by giving them a platform where they can thrive. We all consume fashion. No one leaves the house naked. Therefore, we should have a say and be included. It’s about time for something like feimso to redesigning the fashion landscape, focusing on
inclusion, diversity, accessibility, and innovation for people to make money from, connect, collaborate and have fun.
As successful female entrepreneurs, who are your role models or sources of inspiration in the business world, and how have you influenced your approach to leadership and innovation?
Erin: Iris Apfel has shown me over the years as someone who has my own unique approach to colour and fashion that authenticity is more powerful than dulling your own colours to fit in. Professionally, it changes all the time but Tony Fadell who created the first iPod and his journey, along with Simon Sinek for leadership and motivation have really been instrumental in my perception of tech, business and growth of a company, product and team.
Ina: I don’t have a specific role model. Never had one. I get inspired by stories. We are all made of stories and I love learning from them. I like to surround myself with people I can learn from and I am grateful when they let me in.
Feimso has been praised for its user-friendly interface and innovative features. What principles guide your team’s approach to design and development, and how do you prioritize user experience and tell us how it works?
Ina: Our guiding principle is simple: Give people a product they already know how to use and add features that provide immediate value to their lives.. Feimso is designed for seamless integration into users’ existing social media habits. Almost everyone uses Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or LinkedIn, that’s why navigating Feimso should feel intuitive. The user journey is rooted in our own experiences within the fashion industry. The platform we’re building is less of a product and more about the fashion student who wants to showcase their creations, the local designer to be visible, the small boutique shops to be in the right target market, creators to make money from their content, fashion professionals to monetize their skills, influencers to put a price on their time, individuals to sell their wardrobe and find affordable choices... The opportunities are limitless. We recognized the need for balance and fairness, which drove us to create a platform that drives economic growth, creates job opportunities, showcases talent, and promotes sustainable practices, as long as you give it a chance.
With the rise of sustainability in fashion, how does Feimso contribute to promoting ethical and eco-conscious practices within the industry?
Erin: Unfortunately, the fashion industry has fostered a culture of waste. The fast
fashion model encourages a consumerist mindset that’s hard to keep up with. With low prices and constant trend turnover, clothing has become disposable. As a result, we’re buying 60% more than we did just 15 years ago, but we’re holding onto our clothes for only half as long. Shockingly, 85% of clothing ends up in incinerators or landfills. It’s scary for the future of our planet and the next generations. However, there’s hope on the horizon with the booming fashion re-commerce market. Now buying second hand and renting is HOT. We’re addressing the global demand for sustainable fashion practices, which is valued at over $25 billion. Through our platform, users can buy, sell, rent, and soon swap pre-loved fashion items, reducing textile waste and promoting circular fashion practices which are introduce organically when people use feimso. This is something I am both very concerned and equally passionate to talk about. People want to be sustainable if being sustainable isn’t complicated. That’s the trick. And we have delivered a platform where they can be, sometimes without knowing.
Building a startup requires resilience and adaptability. Can you share any significant lessons or experiences that have shaped your journey with Feimso?
Ina: 2 things: 1 - Don’t be too focused on the Idea and pay attention to whom will make your Idea come to life. Having the right team helps a lot. As founders we have to wear so many hats at the same time and be a Jack of all trades. We would have moved way faster if we had more people working on feimso during these 3 years. But we didn’t know what we didn’t know. The only way you can compensate the lack of it, is by over delivering when it comes to your KPIs. The second thing is to find a mentor even if you need to pay for it. Upgrade your skillset as fast as you can and invest on your mental strength to be prepared for what’s coming. Don’t be cheap on your own personal growth because in the world of business you are what you know and who you know. Your success is bound to your expertise and your network.
As advocates for female empowerment, what advice do you have for aspiring women entrepreneurs looking to make their mark in the tech or fashion industry?
Erin: You will have sleepless nights because of deadlines, yo-yo stress and never-ending challenges as well as, battling with your insecurities, breaking old patterns and learning new skills. Your mind has to equal and keep up with your company goals. If you don’t know something ask questions. As founders, we’re deeply attached to our creations, but it’s crucial to remember that
investors, customers, partners have other priorities. Take rejection as a learning opportunity, embracing constructive feedback to refine your pitch and strategy. It’s not for the weak hearted but it’s worth it.
Feimso has undoubtedly achieved remarkable success. What future goals or initiatives do you envision for the app, and how do you plan to continue innovating in the ever-evolving landscape of fashion and technology?
Ina: What we have launched today is a far cry from our ultimate vision on how feimso will look in 5 years. I read that 87million jobs will be displaced and more than 90million will be created in the near future. What is happening in the tech space is revolutionary. With our core team we do these deep dives on product development, market research and keeping an eye on what’s happening out there. Our Beta testers play a huge role by providing feedback in real time for everything that happens in feimso. At the moment we are focused to build a strong foundation, finding the right talent, partners and investors to join us on our journey. Soon, we will introduce new features that will bring value like never seen before in our users’ lives. We live for it!

Retirement – the golden years where you kick back without the constrains of the working week and enjoy life. Picture your ideal retirement. What does it look like? Is it jetsetting around the world or simply enjoying leisurely days at home with family and friends? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here, but a little soul-searching can go a long way. Consider your current lifestyle and how you might want to maintain—or even upgrade—it in retirement.
With these pictures in mind, it’s time to think about your finances a bit differently now, so your golden years end up how you imagine (even if right now, it might seem far away).
We know that statistically women outlive men, which means extra years to enjoy in retirement. But the extra longevity means a need for better proactive planning, and a need to take action early to ensure those golden years can be filled with joy, purpose, and financial security. The fashion industry has long been a battleground for issues of body image and self-worth. For decades, the prevailing notion was that beauty could only be found in very slim, size 0 to 10 bodies, perpetuating unrealistic and often harmful standards. However, this perspective is increasingly being challenged as global attitudes towards beauty evolve, fostering a more inclusive and diverse representation of body types. Despite this progress, certain pockets of the industry, including some older male designers in NZ, still cling to outdated ideals.
Historically, the fashion world has glorified thinness, with runway models often epitomising an unattainable standard of beauty. This has led to widespread fat shaming, both within the industry and in broader society. For years, models who did not conform to these narrow standards faced significant barriers, and consumers were bombarded with images that promoted an unhealthy and exclusive ideal.
In Auckland, some veteran designers continue to uphold the belief that models must be a small size to embody fashion’s aesthetic ideals. This mindset not only marginalises a vast segment of potential talent but also ignores the shifting dynamics of beauty standards worldwide, not to mention the majority of their clients are not slim. Today, beauty is increasingly recognised in diverse forms, sizes, and backgrounds, reflecting a broader and more realistic spectrum of human bodies.
The shift in global beauty standards has been propelled by a growing awareness and rejection of fat shaming. Influential movements and campaigns advocating body positivity have gained momentum, challenging the fashion industry’s restrictive norms. Brands are now embracing plus-size models, and runway shows are featuring a wider variety of body types.
Notable examples include prominent fashion houses like Christian Siriano and Savage X Fenty by Rihanna, which have consistently featured models of all sizes, celebrating their uniqueness and breaking the conventional mold. These trailblazers have demonstrated that fashion can be both inclusive and aspirational, setting a new standard for the industry.
Social media has also played a crucial role in democratizing beauty standards. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have given a voice to individuals who challenge traditional norms and celebrate body
diversity. Influencers and activists are using these platforms to share their stories, promote self-acceptance, and call out fat shaming, further driving the change in societal perceptions of beauty.
However, the resistance from some highlights the ongoing struggle within the industry. These designers’ adherence to outdated standards underscores the need for continued advocacy and education. It is essential to recognise that clinging to a narrow definition of beauty not only limits creative expression but also alienates a significant portion of the consumer base.
The fashion industry must continue to evolve, embracing a more inclusive and realistic representation of beauty. This includes dismantling the entrenched biases that have long dictated what a model should look like. By doing so, fashion can become a powerful force for positive change, promoting self-confidence and acceptance for people of all shapes and sizes.
While the fashion industry’s journey towards inclusivity is far from complete, significant strides have been made. It is crucial for all industry players, to adapt and embrace this change. Only then can the fashion industry truly reflect the rich tapestry of human beauty and promote a healthier, more accepting society.

The Heart Foundation is highlighting a critical issue affecting women’s health: heart attacks. Heart disease is the single biggest cause of death among women in New Zealand, claiming the lives of almost eight women every day.
Contrary to popular belief, women may not always experience the classic symptoms of a heart attack, such as chest pain or discomfort. Instead, they may present with symptoms including shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, backache, jaw pain, or extreme fatigue
These differences in symptoms can sometimes lead to under-recognition and delayed treatment, putting women at greater risk of serious complications or death.
An international study published in 2020 concludes that women under the age of 55 can experience different heart attack symptoms to men.
The study looked at ten symptoms of a heart attack and the top symptoms experienced by both men and women were pain in the chest, jaw, neck, arm or back. However, women presented with less chest pain and more sweating, dizziness and nausea than men.
Heart Foundation Medical Director Dr Gerry Devlin says too many women are dying from heart attacks as the warning signs aren’t recognised. ‘Seeking medical attention promptly is crucial as early intervention can make all the difference in saving lives. We encourage women to look after their hearts and get a heart check with their health practitioner as soon as they get any of these symptoms.’
Women without any known risk factors of heart disease are advised to get a heart check from the age of 55. Women with known heart disease risks should be checked at 45; Māori, Pasifika and South Asian women are advised to go from age 40; and those with severe mental illness as early as 25 years old (their mortality rate is 2-3 times higher and cardiovascular disease is a major contributor to that).
A heart check will include having your blood pressure and cholesterol tested, going through your family history, and discussing smoking and other lifestyle factors.
The Heart Foundation will be putting the spotlight on women in the month
of May in an awareness campaign aimed at educating New Zealanders about the signs and symptoms of heart attacks in women and encouraging women to look after their hearts.
They are also calling on kind-hearted supporters to donate and support further life-saving heart research, so more can be understood about heart disease.
Female heart attack survivor Raewyn Shaw has shared her story to encourage other women to be aware of their heart health.
Raewyn had a horrifying experience out on the water when a routine swim became a battle for her life. After gratefully receiving the help of two paddleboarders, her heart event led to a hospital stay.
‘I’m not allowed to go out into the deep ocean to swim anymore,’ she says. ‘At least, not until they give me the all-clear. I don’t know if they ever will. I really love swimming and I love the ocean, so it’s taken a bit of adjusting to.’
Raewyn wants to stress that heart attacks can be a silent killer. As she personally encountered, the common warning signs are not always present, and everyone’s experience varies. Getting a heart check-up early can save your life.
‘I was 58 when I had my heart attack out on the water,” she says. “And so much could have gone wrong that day but it didn’t. Now I’m keen to make the most of my second chance at life.’
The Heart Foundation invests around $4 million every year in life-saving heart research to enable people with heart disease to live healthier lives.
Dr Devlin says through the Heart Foundation’s membership of the Global Cardiovascular Research Funders Forum (GCRFF), we are currently exploring the most urgent research needs for women’s cardiovascular health which will inform an exciting international research opportunity.

I recently had the pleasure and remarkable experience of trying out an ‘Emma bed in New Zealand’. ‘Emma Sleep’, renowned for their award-winning mattresses, have crafted a product that truly lives up to its reputation. The Emma mattress offers a perfect blend of comfort and support, featuring advanced foam layers designed to provide optimal spinal alignment and pressure relief.
Upon receiving the mattress, I was impressed by the convenience of the delivery process. The mattress arrived compressed and rolled in a box, making it easy to manoeuvre into the desired room. Unboxing and setting up the mattress was straightforward, and it quickly expanded to its full size within a few hours. I have never assembled a bed and the instructions were so easy and the bed came together in no time.
Sleeping on the Emma mattress was a delight. The top layer, made of breathable Airgocell® foam, keeps the sleeping surface cool, even on warmer nights. Below this, a layer of memory foam adapts to the body’s contours, providing a cushioned feel
without compromising support. The bottom layer, made of supportive HRX foam, ensures durability and stability.
One standout feature is the motion isolation. Sharing the bed with a partner, I noticed minimal disturbance from their movements, resulting in a restful night’s sleep. The mattress also offers a balanced firmness, making it suitable for a wide range of sleepers, from side to back to stomach positions.
Overall, ‘Emma beds in New Zealand’ offer exceptional value for money, combining high-quality materials and innovative design. With a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty, it’s clear that ‘Emma Sleep’ stand by their product, making it a highly recommended choice for those seeking a premium sleeping experience.

Raised watching her mother’s impeccable work in the field of cosmetic medicine, it was only natural that Leigh Cattin would join Dr. Teresa Cattin’s highly regarded FaceWorks clinic in Mairangi Bay, quickly accruing an impressive client list of her own.
Highly trained in the use of neuromodulators and cosmetic fillers and a leader in her field, Teresa has over 25 years’ experience in cosmetic medicine and is famed for her less-is-more approach to graceful ageing. A past President of the New Zealand College of Appearance Medicine who is regularly invited to speak at international conferences, she pioneered the use of the ‘French Touch’ approach to injectables in New Zealand, effectively using carefully placed, very small amounts of cosmetic injectables to rejuvenate and enhance the face subtly and discreetly.
Leigh, a newly graduated doctor who recently travelled with Teresa to an aesthetics conference in Monaco, is planning to follow in her mother’s footsteps with a career in family medicine and appearance medicine, and the pair thrive on the working environment that a mother-daughter relationship brings. Working from Teresa’s clinic on Auckland’s Apollo Drive, Leigh, who has a particular interest in neuromodulators and lip enhancements for younger patients, has bought an impressive new dynamic to the space and a raft of new clients who appreciate the considerable difference that taking a subtle but considered approach to injectables makes.
‘With younger patients, it’s not about softening age-related changes on the face, but rather about carefully enhancing each client’s natural beauty,’ says Leigh. ‘Sometimes a lip may be just slightly too thin or asymmetrical, and a very small amount of product can make all the difference in a way that is not at all obvious or ‘done’ looking.’
Both women are passionate about the gentle but effective French approach to appearance medicine, with Teresa saying: ‘There is increasing evidence that tiny amounts of neuromodulators given regularly and started at the right time can actually prevent very deep lines from forming. Deep lines aren’t necessarily a result of age at all. They can be a family trait, which can start at a much younger age. Neuromodulators control the development of these family traits beautifully, for natural results that never look frozen.’
Incredibly serene but with just the right amount of comfort thrown in for good measure, the FaceWorks clinic is a true reflection of the professionalism and warmth you experience when you meet Teresa and Leigh, making it a true ‘beauty destination’ worth visiting.

New Zealand, renowned for its pristine landscapes and commitment to sustainability, is fast becoming a global leader in the production and use of natural products. From skincare to health supplements, the strength and benefits of these products are gaining recognition and transforming industries.
One of the most compelling strengths of natural products lies in their purity and environmental sustainability. New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna provide an abundant source of high-quality, natural ingredients. For example, the country’s Manuka honey is famed worldwide for its potent antibacterial properties and health benefits. Similarly, native botanicals like Mamaku, Kawakawa and Harakeke are celebrated for their therapeutic properties and are increasingly incorporated into skincare formulations.
The benefits of natural products extend beyond their efficacy. Consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their choices, and natural products offer a more sustainable option. By using locally sourced ingredients, natural product manufacturers reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Furthermore, manufacturers of these products often eschew harmful chemicals and synthetic additives, ensuring that their production and disposal have minimal impact on the environment.
Natural products also resonate with the growing consumer demand for transparency and authenticity. New Zealand brands are known for their stringent quality controls and ethical sourcing practices, which ensure that consumers can trust the integrity of the products they purchase. This transparency is a significant factor in building consumer loyalty and trust.
Health benefits are another crucial aspect of natural products. Free from synthetic chemicals, these products are generally gentler on the skin and body, reducing the risk of adverse reactions and long-term health issues. Natural skincare products, for instance, are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential oils that nourish and protect the skin. Health supplements made from natural ingredients, such as marine collagen and greenlipped mussel extract, offer potent benefits without the side effects often associated with synthetic alternatives.
The rise of natural products also supports the local economy and communities. Many of New Zealand’s natural product companies collaborate with local farmers and indigenous communities, ensuring that the benefits of this growing industry are widely shared. This not only preserves traditional knowledge and practices but also fosters sustainable economic development.
We know the strength and benefits of natural products in New Zealand are undeniable. From their environmental sustainability and health benefits to their support for local communities and economies, these products represent a holistic approach to well-being and sustainability. As consumers continue to seek out products that align with their values, New Zealand’s natural products are poised to play an increasingly prominent role on the global stage. By embracing these products, we not only enhance our own health and well-being but also contribute to a more sustainable and ethical world.

Meet Zoe Wilde from Tuesday Skin, the rebellious disruptor in the beauty industry, challenging dated stigmas and championing self-love and confidence. With clinics in Mangonui and Kerikeri, Tuesday Skin offers cosmetic injectables, advanced skin therapies, and Dermaviduals skincare, all geared towards empowering women to feel their best.
What sets Tuesday Skin apart? It’s not just about beauty; it’s about attitude. Embracing a ‘zero fcks’ mantra, Tuesday Skin celebrates individuality and encourages women to be unapologetically themselves. From bold aesthetics to empowering messages, Tuesday Skin is all about helping ‘baddies’ feel their absolute best.
Zoe believes overfilling with fillers is on the way out and overall complexion reigns supreme. Tuesday Skin leads the charge with biostimulators like Radiesse®, promoting the body’s natural collagen and elastin production. But it’s not just about injections; it’s about transforming skin quality. With cutting-edge Sciton technology, including Broadband light (BBL) and Moxi laser treatments, Tuesday Skin is reversing aging and revitalizing skin like never before.
Tuesday Skin is pioneering change with world-class treatments previously unavailable in the Northland region. Clients are walking out looking years younger, their confidence radiating with every step. With Tuesday Skin, it’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling empowered and embracing your true self.
Zoe tells us ‘People are coming to me for Botox and filler to look younger, when what they really need is to improve the quality of their skin, especially here in NZ, where sun damage is so prevalent. This is where the Sciton technology comes in, specifically their Broadband light (BBL) and Moxi laser, literally reversing aging. Treating the pigment and reds within the skin is leaving clients looking clearer, brighter and healthier, and it’s a treatment people didn’t know they needed, revolutionarily changing the gene expression with complete bioremodelling of the skin cells’
When I opened my skin clinic in Northland, my goal was to raise the calibre of what’s offered and offer nothing but the best of the best, and that’s where BBL and Moxi enter the scene; we’re lucky to be the first clinic North of Auckland to have this world-class treatment available. My clients are walking out looking years younger, and it just keeps getting better.

Elliott Jones, Northland’s Premier Cosmetic Tattoo Artist Rachael Elliot Jones is a qualified Beauty Therapist with over 26 years of experience in the beauty industry. Renowned as Northland’s top cosmetic tattoo artist, Rachael’s passion for creating the perfect eyebrows led her to further her training over seven years ago, offering more permanent options for her clients. She initially trained in machine work, covering brows, eyeliner, and lips, and later added Phibrows Microblading to her repertoire to provide more choices for her clients. Rachael has become a household name when good brows are talked about.
Rachael is dedicated to upskilling and keeping abreast of the latest techniques in this fast-paced industry. Micropigmentation, also known as Semi-Permanent Makeup or Cosmetic Tattooing, is designed to implant pigment into the skin to create shape and definition, enhancing one’s natural features. Rachael tells us ‘the brow can completely change your face; it’s important to take time to get the right shape.’
The first and most crucial step in Rachael’s process is a thorough consultation. She collaborates with her clients to enhance their features using the correct techniques for their skin. Rachael offers various methods to ensure she has the right option for each client. She meticulously measures, draws, and re-measures based on the client’s bone structure, ensuring the shape is perfect. This precision ensures that clients will love their new look.
Once the design is finalised, the tattooing process begins. All tattooing is a two-part process, completed 4-8 weeks apart. Most pigments last between 1-3 years, depending on the client’s skin, lifestyle, and homecare. Rachael is excited to create beautiful results with her clients and values the trust they place in her expertise.
In addition to cosmetic tattooing, Rachael also offers lash lifting and tinting, brow tinting and laminating, and threading. Her extensive knowledge and skill set ensure that clients receive the best procedures tailored to their individual needs.
In addition to all of this Rachael offers Compassionate care for cancer patients.
Rachael is also registered with Te Whatu Ora as a Permanent Makeup (PMU) artist. She provides services to patients who have lost hair due to cancer. These patients can receive funding for their brows, allowing them to have their treatments covered. Rachael’s compassionate care and dedication to her clients’ well-being extend beyond aesthetics, offering support and restoration of confidence for those who need it most.
Rachael is passionate about educating and sharing knowledge with her clients to help them understand the best procedures for their needs. Her commitment to excellence, combined with her warm and welcoming approach, makes her a sought-after cosmetic tattoo artist in Northland.

Cellar door, PlumeIt all began with a dream of turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and luxurious retreats. As the plane descended into Nadi International Airport, the breathtaking views of Fiji’s archipelago unfolded beneath, promising a journey filled with indulgence and serenity.
Leaving the comfort of Denarau behind, we embarked on a journey to explore some of Fiji’s more secluded treasures.
First stop, the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau Island. As we arrived, we were greeted with the traditional Fijian ‘Bula!’ and the scent of frangipani flowers. The resort, known for its French elegance fused with Fijian warmth, was a haven of relaxation. Our suite boasted stunning ocean views, and the infinity pool seemed to blend seamlessly with the azure sea. The advantage of the exclusive Waitui Beach Club – a kid free zone if you want quiet time. Days were spent basking in the sun, enjoying rejuvenating spa treatments, and dining at the waterfront restaurants where local seafood was prepared with exquisite French flair.
Next, we moved to the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, just a stone’s throw away. The Hilton’s villas offered a perfect blend of modern luxury and island charm, each with private pools and direct beach access. Mornings began with yoga on the beach, followed by hearty breakfasts featuring tropical fruits and freshly baked pastries. The afternoons were filled with water adventures— snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs and paddleboarding in the crystal-clear lagoon. Evenings at the Hilton were magical, with beachfront dining under the stars, accompanied by traditional Fijian music and dance performances.
Our next destination was the Likuliku Lagoon Resort, a short helicopter ride away. Famous for its overwater bungalows, the resort offered an unparalleled experience of tranquillity and romance. The bungalows stood on stilts above the pristine lagoon, with glass floors that allowed us to watch the colourful marine life below. Days here were spent in absolute relaxation—sunbathing on our private deck, exploring the coral gardens, and savouring gourmet meals that showcased the freshest local ingredients. The resort’s commitment to sustainability and preservation of the natural environment was evident, adding a deeper sense of appreciation to our stay.
Just nearby, Malolo Island Resort welcomed us with its family-friendly charm and rustic luxury. The beachfront bures were perfect for unwinding, surrounded by lush gardens and the sound of the waves. Malolo offered a more laid-back vibe, with activities like hiking to scenic viewpoints, visiting local villages, and participating in traditional Fijian crafts. The sunset cruises were a highlight, offering stunning views of the horizon painted in hues of orange and pink, a perfect end to idyllic island days.
Leaving the tropical paradise of Fiji, our adventure continued to the diverse and stunning landscapes of New Zealand.
As our adventure came to an end, we reflected on the diverse experiences that made this journey unforgettable. From the tropical allure of Fiji’s islands to the majestic beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes, each destination offered its own unique charm and luxury. We returned home with our hearts full, our spirits rejuvenated, and memories that would last a lifetime.
Our first stop was the Rosewood Kauri Cliffs, located on New Zealand’s North Island. Renowned for its world-class golf course, the resort was set on 6,000 acres of pristine land overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The view from our suite was nothing short of spectacular, with rolling hills and dramatic cliffs meeting the vast sea. The golf course, ranked among the world’s best, was a golfer’s dream, offering challenging play and breathtaking scenery. Off the course we tried the relaxing spa treatments. Dining at Kauri Cliffs was a gastronomic journey, with meals prepared using fresh, local produce, often accompanied by fine New Zealand wines.
In the heart of Auckland, The Hotel Britomart provided a chic urban retreat. Its eco-friendly design and stylish interiors made it a standout in the city’s bustling Britomart district. From here, you can explore Auckland’s vibrant waterfront, boutique shopping, and dynamic culinary scene. They have just launched Nourishing Nature, a native forest farm experience for people who want to leave a lasting positive impact in the place they’ve come to explore. On this half-day (4 hour) experience, you’ll head to the beautiful Waitakare Ranges to visit a ‘native forest farm’ that’s taking traditional native plant ingredients into some of Auckland’s best restaurants. You’ll forage herbs and plants with the guidance of an expert, discover the taste profiles of these ingredients and learn how reforesting native bush helps New Zealand’s rich biodiversity flourish. After the harvest, you’ll discover the unique flavours of these traditional foods alongside artisan cheeses, meats and breads in a spectacular open-air glasshouse in the forest.
The grand finale of our journey was Lindis Luxury Lodge, set amidst the dramatic landscapes of New Zealand’s South Island. Nestled in the Ahuriri Valley, the lodge was an architectural marvel blending seamlessly with its surroundings. The panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, golden tussock lands, and the winding river below were awe-inspiring. At Lindis, days were filled with outdoor pursuits with the highlight being a 2 day Land Rover tour. We spent the evenings drinking fine wines and gazing under the clearest skies. The lodge’s intimate setting and impeccable service made us feel like we had the whole valley to ourselves, providing a perfect conclusion to our luxurious journey.

Seeds of opportunity will be planted when Girls who Grow, an education programme empowering the next generation of female led agriculture and farming, launches into colleges across Wellington, Wairarapa, Kapiti Coast and Horowhenua in terms 3 and 4 of this year, thanks to early-stage funding from WellingtonNZ.
The mission of Girls who Grow is to empower and cultivate the next generation of educated female change makers, leaders, and environmental guardians, fostering a climate-positive approach to agriculture and farming. By reconnecting young women back to Aotearoa’s land through food and fashion, the programme aims to educate and empower future leaders while shifting perceptions around agribusiness and women’s roles within the industry.
Co-founded by changemakers Catherine van der Meulen and Aimee Blake, Girls who Grow aims to address concerning statistics that only 6% of school leavers enter Aotearoa’s primary industries, with numbers declining since 2009.
Girls who Grow long-term goals include seeing 50,000 farms in Aotearoa become climate-positive, developing Girls who Grow-owned farms as hubs for hands on and experience led education for young wāhine, and encouraging more female school leavers to choose primary industries as a career.
‘We are incredibly grateful for the support from WellingtonNZ, which will drive the growth of Girls who Grow across the region,”’says van der Meulen.
‘This funding allows us to advance our mission of empowering young women in agriculture and farming, driving innovation, and encouraging positive change within the industry. Our vision extends beyond Wellington, with every town and region earmarked over the next 3 years to be actively participating in Girls who Grow through engaging educational experiences throughout Aotearoa. However, to achieve this goal, we rely on the meaningful contributions of corporate, philanthropic, and other sources to continue our impactful work.’
According to the Ministry of Primary Industries, Aotearoa needs 25,000 new skilled primary industry workers by 2025 to meet increasing demand, yet currently, only 35% of the workforce includes women. Van der Meulen says the next generation play a critical role in sustaining our economy with 85% of our exports being food and fibre.
The Girls who Grow first pilot programme was launched in Otago last year. Imagination centred workshops for 15 to 17-year-old wāhine college students sparked their imagination to get curious about a different future, one that doesn’t live with high climate anxiety knowing that they can be part of the solution.
An imagination challenge saw students work together and with mentors to design meaningful drought solutions with the final projects presented to judges from Otago Polytech, MPI’s Sustainable Food and Fibre Fund, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Pamu and Otago Polytech.
On-farm experiences explored diverse farming, sustainable fibres for fashion and construction, land use, locally sourced produce and electrification of farming practices at Hemp Central, Moreish Kitchen, and Forest Lodge Orchard.

Twofold is Auckland‘s newest little brewpub located in the heart of Parnell. A place for workmates, families, friends, and tank beer.
Founded by Bernard Neate and John Austin. John, whose fascination with beer began whilst ‘home brewing’, where he says he ‘found joy in observing the process and thehistory behind it.’ John sees beer as more than just a beverage; it‘s a tool for bringing people together, and he wants TwoFold to be a part of that tradition.
Simply put, Beer, although relatively simple, is a beverage has been bringing people together since the beginning of civilization. Ultimately, Twofold want to be part of this narrative and use their brewpub as a space for people to get together and have a great time.
So, get your people together and visit Twofold. Parnell’s newest hospo hot spot!

What inspired Bossi Italian Restaurant’s winter menu this year?
Winter is synonymous with comfort food for me. Italian cuisine offers an array of comforting dishes - from creamy pastas and hearty sauces to hot sandwiches and moorish meat dishes. Growing up in a large Italian family, we were always sharing food in the family home, it was, and is, our love language. Our offering at Bossi is inspired by my Nonna and all those wonderful recipes and experiences with food.
Can you share some highlights from the new winter menu?
Our new winter menu is heroed by the most delicious Culurgiones; pasta dumplings filled with potato and gorgonzola and served with a porcini cream sauce. They have been a Bossi stable since day one, and by popular demand, we’re bringing back the OG recipe that debuted on our opening menu!
We’ll also be bringing back a few other favourites to the Bossi menu this winter, including Lamb Maltagliati - a rich, slow cooked pasta dish that Chef serves up in a delightfully generous portion. Maltagliati means ‘poorly cut’ - so the pasta is all sorts of shapes.
Is there a memorable Italian dish your Mother or Grandmother cooked when growing up?
My Nonna - who is our muse for Bossi - would make a Beef Ragu with fresh pasta including herbs from the garden. This dish will also be on the menu this winter and has one ingredient that is a secret to our family. Sorry but my lips are sealed! You’ll just have to come and try it for yourself.
How does Bossi incorporate seasonal ingredients into its winter dishes? Freshness and seasonality is really important to us at Bossi. We get all our greens and veg delivered fresh daily, allowing us to select the best seasonal options to offer our diners each day.
Everything at Bossi is homemade on-site - from our breads and pasta to the layers of our tiramisu and sauces, everything! Even our limoncello is crafted in-house! We pride ourselves on preparing everything fresh and homemade, without relying on any pre-made ingredients.
Are there any special events or promotions planned for winter dining at Bossi?
We’ll be celebrating Carnevale, a winter festival inspired by Italy’s festive Mardi Gras that pays homage to Bacchus, the god of wine. This year, we’re bringing Carnevale to Kiwi during our NZ winter instead - stay tuned for more details!
Can you recommend some perfect wine pairings for winter dishes on the menu?
We have three mouth-watering dishes perfect for the colder months. Our Pappardelle Al Ragù Di Cinghiale (Pappardelle with wild pork ragu) pairs beautifully with Nero D’Avola, an ideal match for hearty meat dishes. For our Braciola (involtini), a rolled beef roulade with breadcrumbs, cheese, herbs, and pine nuts in a rich tomato sauce served with creamy polenta and taleggio, we recommend the aromatic Spelt Montepulciano. Finally, our Gnocchi alla porcini, potato dumplings with mushroom and pecorino cream, pairs wonderfully with a fruity Chianti Peppoli.
Are there any unique culinary techniques or cooking methods employed in the winter menu preparations? Winter cooking for us is all about traditional, slow cooked, comfort food. Think soups, stews, and polenta - heartwarming meals bursting with flavour. We take our time with each dish and sauce, allowing them to simmer and develop rich depths of taste through care and patience.
What does winter look like in your household?
Creating a cozy ambiance with candles is a must for me, although I enjoy them year-round. Funnily enough I gravitate toward the same colour palette as Bossi - forest green, maroon, brown, rust - all reminiscent of winter themes. Bossi embodies the essence of winter. We want it to feel like an extension of your home.

Our formulations are designed to work synergistically, ensuring that our customers experience tangible benefits without the side effects commonly associated with synthetic alternatives. Additionally, we are transparent about our ingredient sourcing and manufacturing processes, which builds trust with our consumers.
Can you explain how the Focus products work to enhance cognitive function?
Our Focus products are formulated with a blend of nootropics, adaptogens, and vitamins that support brain health. Ingredients like Bacopa Monnieri, Rhodiola Rosea, and L-Theanine work together to enhance memory, reduce mental fatigue, and improve concentration. These compounds have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and are now backed by modern science. The result is a natural and effective way to stay sharp and productive throughout the day.
What makes the Sleep products effective for promoting restful sleep?
The Sleep products are crafted with ingredients known for their calming and sleep-inducing properties. We use a combination of Melatonin, Valerian Root, and Magnesium to help regulate sleep cycles and promote relaxation. Additionally, herbs like Chamomile and Lavender are included for their soothing effects. The formula is designed to help users fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling refreshed without the grogginess often associated with medical sleep aids.
How important is sustainability to Bader Brand, and how is this reflected in Focus and Sleep?
Sustainability is a core value at Bader Brand. We believe in creating products that not only benefit our customers but also respect the environment. Our ingredients are sustainably sourced, and we prioritize eco-friendly packaging. We are continually seeking ways to reduce our carbon footprint and support sustainable practices throughout our supply chain. This commitment to sustainability reflects our broader mission to contribute positively to the world.
What feedback have you received from customers who use Focus and Sleep?
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Customers report noticeable improvements in their ability to concentrate and manage stress during the day. Many have also shared that they experience deeper, more restorative sleep with our sleep products. Hearing these success stories is incredibly rewarding and motivates us to keep innovating and improving our formulations.
What future plans do you have for the Focus and Sleep brand?
My business partner Ryan Bennett and myself are constantly researching and developing new products to expand our Focus and Sleep line. Our goal is to offer a comprehensive range of wellness solutions that address various aspects of mental and physical health. In the near future, we plan to introduce new supplements and lifestyle products that complement our existing offerings, always with the same dedication to quality and effectiveness.

Central to the bathroom’s sophisticated aesthetic are the Italian porcelain tiles that grace the walls and floors. Their subtle patterns and rich textures create a serene backdrop, perfectly complementing the overall design. The gold agents and tap fittings give the bathroom as sense of opulence and Luciana’s commitment to custom-made elements is evident throughout the ensuite. The project features bespoke composite stone surfaces, selected for their durability and refined appearance. These surfaces not only enhance the bathroom’s visual appeal but also provide a practical solution for everyday use.
The lighting is another standout feature. Luciana has crafted a lighting scheme that accentuates the bathroom’s luxurious ambiance while ensuring functionality. Soft, ambient lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while strategically placed task lighting offers practicality for daily routines.
Custom cabinetry, designed by Luciana herself, adds to the bathroom’s bespoke charm. Each piece is crafted to fit seamlessly into the space, offering ample storage without compromising on style. The cabinetry’s sleek lines and high-quality finishes further elevate the bathroom’s sophisticated look.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today, Matt. Can you start by telling us about the history of Michael Joyce NZ and how it has evolved over the years?
It’s a pleasure to be here. Michael Joyce NZ was founded by my father, Michael Joyce, over 35 years ago. What began as a passion for quality and luxurious European homeware has now become a well-established, third-generation family business. My Mother, my sister and I took over the reins after our father passed away, and we’ve continued his legacy of importing top-quality European gift and homeware brands. We’ve stayed true to our roots by ensuring our products are not only beautiful but also sustainable and long-lasting.
What makes Michael Joyce NZ stand out in the luxury goods market?
Our commitment to quality and sustainability is what sets us apart. We travel to Europe each year to handpick the most exquisite and luxurious products. We focus on sourcing from reputable manufacturers who have a strong design ethos and use premium materials. Our product range is designed to be reliable, attractive, and innovative, ensuring that every item is a pleasure to use and own. Additionally, we prioritize brands that are world-friendly and sustainable, reflecting our commitment to responsible business practices.
Can you share some insights into your selection process when sourcing new products?
Absolutely. When my sister and I and now my wife and I travel to Europe, we look for brands that align with our values of quality, sustainability, and design excellence. We visit trade shows, meet with manufacturers, and even visit their production facilities to ensure they meet our high standards. We look for products that not only look good but also have a story to tell—whether it’s about the craftsmanship, the materials used, or the sustainability practices in place. It’s important to us that our products are something our customers can cherish for years to come.
How do you ensure that your products remain innovative and relevant in a rapidly changing market?
Staying innovative and relevant requires a deep understanding of market trends and customer preferences. We invest a lot of time in research and attend international trade shows to stay ahead of the curve. We also maintain close relationships with our manufacturers and encourage them to push the boundaries of design and functionality. Additionally, we listen to feedback from our customers and retail stockists, which helps us to continuously refine our product range. Innovation, for us, means combining timeless design with modern functionality and sustainability.
Michael Joyce NZ has a strong focus on sustainability. Can you elaborate on some of the sustainable practices your company and your brands implement?
Sustainability is at the core of what we do. We ensure that the brands we represent use eco-friendly materials and sustainable production methods. For instance, many of our brands use recycled or sustainably sourced materials and have processes in place to minimize their environmental impact. In our own operations, we focus on reducing waste and energy consumption. Our warehouse and showroom in Grey Lynn, Auckland, are designed to be energy-efficient, and we use sustainable packaging materials wherever possible. It’s a continuous journey, but we’re committed to making a positive impact on the planet.
What are some of the challenges you face in running a family business, and how do you overcome them?
Running a family business comes with its unique set of challenges, particularly when it comes to balancing family dynamics with business decisions. Communication is key—we ensure that we have open and honest discussions about the direction of the business and any issues that arise. Another challenge is staying competitive in a market that is constantly evolving. We overcome this by being flexible and adaptive, always looking for new opportunities and ways to innovate. Ultimately, our shared passion for the business and our commitment to our father’s legacy keeps us motivated and united.
What are your future aspirations for Michael Joyce NZ?
Our goal is to continue growing our presence in New Zealand and to expand our product range with more exclusive, high-quality European brands. We aim to deepen our commitment to sustainability and introduce more eco-friendly products to our portfolio. We also want to strengthen our relationships with our retail partners and provide even better service to our customers. Ultimately, we hope to continue being a trusted name in luxury homeware, known for quality, innovation, and sustainability.
Finally, what advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs in the luxury goods sector?
My advice would be to stay true to your values and passion. Quality should never be compromised, and sustainability should be a priority. Build strong relationships with your suppliers and customers, and always be open to feedback. Stay adaptable and be willing to embrace change and innovation. Most importantly, remember that success in the luxury goods sector is about offering products that not only meet but exceed customer expectations in terms of quality, design, and sustainability.
Thank you, Matt, for sharing your insights and the story of Michael Joyce NZ. It’s inspiring to see how you continue to honour your father’s legacy while driving the business forward with such passion and dedication.
Thank you for having me. It’s been a pleasure to share our journey, and I look forward to what the future holds for Michael Joyce NZ.

The mighty Defender truly is something else! Come with me on an off-road adventure in a Defender through the rugged terrains of Lindis and Nevis near Queenstown; a dream come true. The Defender, known for its robust build and powerful engine, was the perfect companion for tackling the undulating hills and rocky paths that define this stunning region of New Zealand.
As we departed from Queenstown, the scenic drive quickly transformed into an exhilarating journey. The Defender handled the steep climbs and sharp descents with ease, with its advanced suspension system ensuring a smooth ride over the rough terrain. Crossing shallow streams and navigating narrow, winding paths, we felt the thrill of true off-roading. The Defender’s state-of-the-art traction control and all-terrain tyres made light work of the challenging landscape, providing confidence and control at every turn.
Two epic days of driving off road, on road, in the snow, through rivers and up mountains, as the landscape evolved revealing sweeping valleys and tussock-covered hills constantly taking my breath away. Stunning farm tours, French champagne and remote picnic spots were an absolute highlight. The Defender’s all-terrain capabilities shone as we traversed this picturesque but demanding landscape. Every twist and turn revealed new vistas, from snow-capped peaks to serene riverbeds. The raw beauty of nature was all around us, and the Defender allowed us to access remote areas that would be unreachable in a lesser vehicle. I have never felt safer or more in control.
After a day full of adrenaline and awe-inspiring views, we arrived at The Lindis, an architectural marvel seamlessly blending into the Canterbury landscape. Nestled beside the Ahuriri River, this luxury lodge offered a perfect retreat from the rugged outdoors. The expansive glass walls provide panoramic views of the valley, and the star-studded night sky was a breathtaking sight from the comfort of my suite.
Dining at The Lindis was an experience, with gourmet meals crafted from local ingredients, paired with exquisite New Zealand wines. The lodge’s chefs presented dishes that were as visually stunning as they were delicious, highlighting the best of the region’s produce. Reflecting on our adventure while relaxing in the lodge’s serene ambiance, we knew this journey was a perfect blend of rugged exploration and luxurious relaxation. Our Defender adventure through Lindis and Nevis,
culminating in a stay at The Lindis, was an unforgettable experience.
The Defender Journey features a two-night stay at The Lindis, providing the epitome of comfort in style. Indulging in locally sourced cuisine and exceptional wines in the expansive dining room, creates unforgettable experiences.
Get yourself behind the wheel of the Defender 110, equipped with a full suite of off-road technology and the potent D300 SE’s 6-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine, and you’ll effortlessly navigate through testing terrains and tracks. The team at Downforce will ensure you quickly grasp the vehicle’s capabilities and technology. Throughout the journey, their dedicated and highly skilled team of instructors will accompany you, providing guidance as you negotiate difficult off-road trails behind the wheel of your Defender. Prepare for an unforgettable experience, exploring the rugged beauty of Central Otago while enjoying the finest hospitality and cuisine the region has to offer.

Guests will be greeted with the exquisite taste of Champagne Jacquart upon arrival, setting the tone for an evening of indulgence and compassion. The event features a sumptuous three-course dinner, accompanied by live music from the talented Vickie Loach, famously known as ‘Rock Chick,’ alongside Moss.

Dubbed ‘The Pussy Palace,’ Burton’s sanctuary provides a safe haven for lost and abandoned cats, ensuring they are cared for, de-sexed, vaccinated, and microchipped before embarking on a new chapter in their lives. For those who find solace within its walls, it’s a sanctuary filled with love and security.

Dazz is a small family business that started with a desire to reduce plastic waste in NZ. Unfortunately, when you walk down the cleaning aisle of any grocery store, you will find hundreds of plastic bottles. Many of which end up in NZ landfills and waterways.
They have found a way to prevent this by using dissolvable tablets that make up your cleaning spray!

“I really didn’t think it was a heart attack. I guess that’s why they call it the ‘silent killer’.”
– Raewyn, heart attack survivor
Raewyn’s heart attack struck right in the middle of doing something she loved. On paper, she would be one of the last people you’d expect to have a horrifying heart event. She knew, even before her attack, just how important it was to look after her heart.
But the sad truth is: this happens to far too many women, all over New Zealand. One minute they’re enjoying their life, and the next it is upturned –or worse, lost altogether.
Heart disease is still the single leading cause of death of Kiwi women. And without the kind support of the New Zealand public, it could continue to take precious lives.
Raewyn had a horrifying experience out on the water when a routine swim became a battle for her life. After gratefully receiving the help of two paddleboarders, her heart event led to a hospital stay.
“I’m not allowed to go out into the deep ocean to swim anymore,” she says. “At least, not until they give me the all-clear. I don’t know if they ever will. I really love swimming and I love the ocean, so it’s taken a bit of adjusting to.”
Raewyn wants to stress that heart attacks can be a silent killer. As she personally encountered, the common warning signs are not always present, and everyone’s experience varies. Getting a heart check-up early can save your life.
“I was 58 when I had my heart attack out on the water,” she says. “And so much could have gone wrong that day but it didn’t. Now I’m keen to make the mos t of my second chance at life.”
The Heart Foundation invests around $4 million every year in life-saving heart research, in hopes of discovering the next big breakthrough. The more research funded, the better that heart disease can be diagnosed, treated, and prevented – stopping families from losing their loved ones too soon.
Dr Devlin says through the Heart Foundation’s membership of the Global Cardiovascular Research Funders Forum (GCRFF), we are currently exploring the most urgent research needs for women’s cardiovascular health which will inform an exciting international research opportunity.
You can help play a role in the fight against heart disease today with a kind gift or by purchasing a Heart Foundation Lottery ticket. Your kindness can go towards vital heart research, specialist training for cardiologists and community programmes that help keep Kiwi hearts healthy.
