Market Day Victoria Park Market’s $20 million refurbishment is bringing a long neglected heritage site into the 21st Century.

V

ictoria Park Market’s tall, proud incinerator chimney has been an Auckland landmark for over a hundred years. Until recently, however, the surrounding buildings housed a tourist focused retail complex that did not take full advantage of the site. No longer. Over the past year, the historic brick buildings have undergone an intense refurbishment by consortium Victoria Quarter Trust and CMP Construction Ltd, transforming it into a shopping Mecca of boutique shops, cafes and restaurants.

While the renovation process is still ongoing, it’s easy to appreciate the change. Well-designed courtyards provide a pedestrian friendly environment. Glass canopies along shopping walkways provide shelter from the elements while keeping the market open and filled with light. The developers worked with the Historic Places Trust and the Auckland City Heritage Department to ensure the buildings preserved their former glory. “We were inspired by the challenge of bringing Victoria Park Market back to life and making it more like a village,” says Mark Stevens of

21

“We wanted it to be a place where tourists can visit, and also a place where locals can meet and grab a coffee, pick up stuff from the deli, or even get their hair done. There’s a stage for entertainers, and there’ll always be something going on during the weekend for families.” Barfoot & Thompson Commercial, who has been heavily involved in the project. “We wanted it to be a place where tourists can visit, and also a place where locals can meet and grab a coffee, pick up stuff from the deli, or even get their hair done. There’s a stage for entertainers, and there’ll always be something going on during the weekend for families.” To underline their thinking, Victoria Park Market is now called VPM Community, and will feature a pharmacy and medical centre, with a General Doctor and other Specialist in the health and welfare. Those of us who fondly remember the souvenir vendors that characterised the old market can still rest easy. About 15 to 19 operators have remained in a concentrated grouping within one of the converted stables. Examples include Pipe Dreams, Antiques & Collectables, Chase Point Gifts and Urim Jewellery. Spruced up with feature glass walls that lend comfort and order to the retail space, the shops are now part of a charming arcade. “We’ve tried to keep the arts and crafts feel,” explains marketing and events coordinator Alexandra Grace Scott, “It’s not a mall, it’s more like a boutique shopping destination.” “The shops here are very original, very New Zealand community based businesses. VPM is a welcoming, entertaining and enjoyable international destination.” Retailers include Platinum Sports Co, now in spacious new 22

premises, a perfumery and The Great New Zealand Shop. A barber’s shop and honey shop, butchery, poultry, bakery, fruit and vegetable, and beauty clinics will soon join the mix. VPM will undoubtedly become a celebrated dining destination. Even a short description of the existing and upcoming eateries will be enough to get foodies excited. La Zeppa restaurant and bar, which remained open during the construction, has a beautiful new rooftop deck. Basking in all day sun, the deck is fitted out like an outdoor garden, and enjoys amazing views over the city and Victoria Park. Atico Cocina, an exotic Caribbean–South American restaurant and bar has just opened. The Oak Room Bar and Restaurant will serve New York style tapas. The Indian Village Restaurant, backed by the people from Cin Cin on Quay, will join a steakhouse, sushi bar, cafes and more. And on a corner site, top NZ chef Warwick Brown is undertaking an exciting new venture. Stage 1 of the refurbishment with some 20 new shops and restaurants will be open by June. Stage 2, with another 20 shops, cafes and restaurants, is expected to be complete by late August this year. Phone: (09) 309 6911 Email: info@victoriaparkmarket.co.nz

Situated atop the Victoria Park Markets, La Zeppa focuses on the fact that people want to enjoy each others company without the constraints of having to book a seat or table. I Care and I Do knowledge of how the different styles, fabrics and textures will work for an individual customer, is an integral part of the experience of shopping in the store. “Investment Dressing” is another key to successfully meeting the needs of today’s more pragmatic and practical shopper. No longer interested in one season garments, women are looking to build upon and integrate new pieces into their high quality wardrobes. October Reign supplies an answer to every wardrobe requirement fromglamorous gowns to everyday corporate or casual wear or holiday attire. Autumn conjures up thoughts of cosy fires and mulled wine and these mental images are transposed into the delicious colours filling the shop as the season gently changes. Rich chocolates, pretty mauves, blues, silvers and green in gorgeous silks, wools and cottons are creeping in as the days shorten and the temperatures drop. Recently added to October Reign’s range of designers, Gold Hawk provides fabulous “old Hollywood style” with feminine and elegantly sensual cashmere garments that have quickly become the latest “must haves” for celebrities around the globe.

emember the scene in the movie ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ when Andy, played by Anne Hathaway, sniggered because she thought fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly was trying to decide between two belts that looked exactly the same? Those who nodded wisely when Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda (who was based on the famous Vogue editor, Anna Wintour), pointed out the difference between turquoise, lapis and cerulean blue, have the skills and know-how of a fashion stylist. Angela Stone is an international fashion stylist whose talent and skills have given her an incredible career. She began modelling at age 14, working with top NZ retailers and international brands and travelled to Sydney, Melbourne, Milan and London. Continuing the dream, she created the exceptionally successful Portfolio Model Agency at the age of 21. As Angela propelled her models on to successful and highly revered modelling careers, her talent for grooming and presentation became noticed. Angela was often approached by women and men asking her to help them clear out their wardrobes, to shop or pack their bags when they travelled to important events. Her transition from fashion model to fashion stylist was formalised with Angela Stone Consulting. Over the years, Angela has worked extensively in the fashion industry, as well as with individuals and corporate clients. In addition, her passion for creating the perfect overall look inspired her to develop her own exclusive makeup and clothing range. Stylists wanting to work in the industry need to be able to tell clients that they’ve been professionally trained and Angela was constantly being approached by people wanting her industry knowledge and asking her to help them create a professional career. 18 months ago she opened the exclusive fashion styling school, StyleYou. The exclusive school is the only styling school in New Zealand, with premises in Christchurch and Auckland and another opening in Wellington. StyleYou is about helping those who are interested in the exciting world of fashion styling, personal styling or personal shopping get employment.

Gain employment in the exciting world of fashion styling, personal styling or personal shopping, with StyleYou

Stylists wanting to work in the fashion industry or those who simply want to gain invaluable personal styling and presentation skills can now access Angela’s 25 years of industry experience. “I have all this knowledge and I love passing it on and helping create abundance for people,” she says. “There’s a lot more to styling than meets

the eye. A stylist needs to know how to recognise and bring out the best in people and to achieve this, the stylist needs to be confident and assured and be able to recommend and provide the opportunity for the client to change his or her life.” Angela doesn’t try to create generic stylists and makes sure that trainees retain their individuality. Each course is tailored toward the particular areas trainees want to focus on, whether it’s vintage or corporate styling, working with people in the fashion industry or working with objects and food. The practical and theoretical three-day course costs $3,800 and is “pretty intense.” It includes an invaluable handbook written by Angela containing tips, tricks and hints, and will be an important tool for the rest of a stylist’s career. Aspiring stylists also receive a fan deck of colour swatches that will help them to colour code and understand the seasonal palette their client belongs to. Stylists will also be able to access the exclusive Angela Stone range of makeup, books and clothing wholesale, to use and on-sell to clients. Ph: +64 027 434 3699 www.styleyou.co.nz 33

Modes Modes Newmarket has been the iconic destination store for nearly 30 years, specializing in gorgeous dresses for every event in a girls life, whether it be their first school ball, a very special black-tie event, race wear, bride, bridesmaid, mother of the bride, guest of the wedding, and so not to leave anyone out – the little flower girls too.

T

he new bridal appointment showroom in the private court yard next door provides a beautifully lit ambient space to view some of the world’s leading bridal collections and is a must for brides whether the choice is a garden, vineyard, beach or cathedral venue. Veils and accessories are beautifully co-ordinated, fittings attended to with the utmost care and many happy brides thrilled that processing their big day was made so easy some brides never thought that they could look so beautiful, and that is all thanks to the team at Modes. To show that the brides are so happy with all their help, the girls are often sent cards, flowers, photos or pieces of wedding cake to say “thank you”. Just a small tribute to the attention to detail and flare the staff gives to ensure that you are truly happy. As ‘mothers of the bride’ are not all “stock” size, then Modes offers a limited edition collection in other size combinations and colours. For those wanting a dress off the

rack but with a bit of “arm cover” then they have all the gorgeous picture collar coats and jackets that you may need that are made to order. The ‘ball girls’ will be spoilt for choice next ball season when Modes opens its ‘Top Shelf’ ball area – just waiting for lift access to the top of the building. Enter ‘Wonderland’ with all the hot labels from Australia, New York and beyond that cover all the fashion palettes and passions. Once again an inhouse alteration service ensures the perfect fit. Work in progress always is the bridesmaid collection. Traditionally dresses are ordered in other sizes and colours with an 8-12 week turn around. Modes is constantly sourcing new collections that offer an even greater price range and quicker production time. All potential bridesmaids need to “watch this space” and can select from the rack if time is of the essence, from the extensive collection. The choices for guest of the wedding and Black Tie events are endless. Select from Nicole Miller, Dina Bar-El and George Gross to name a few and even the classic “LBD” shines with a bit of ‘bling’. The races are always a fun time for hatinators, hats and fascinators. These can be trimmed to co-ordinate the outfit to fashion in the field standard if desired as the millenery is pretty fabulous, and over the summer carnival Modes turns into a mini hat shop. When people have been in the occasion wear industry for nearly 30 years, they know what they are doing and you can be sure that Modes offer value, style, fit, quality fabrics, service, knowledge and a vast selection like no other. Regular trips to overseas fashion houses to view collection ensures the Modes is the store to go to for the most fabulous event wear in Australasia, and furthermore it is the first and only stop for your next special occasion. Feel at Ease with Felicitys Bridal Located at 92 Albert St in central Auckland, Felicitys Bridal offers a fantastic range of beautiful bridal gowns, bridesmaid and flowergirl dresses, jewellery, veils and other accessories that are fit for any bride and her special day comfortable asking for money for a service that I believe should just be a part of the experience of selecting your dream wedding gown. I am also very upfront with prices. They are listed on my website and are clearly shown in the showroom. I have standard fitting fees as well so each of my brides knows exactly what they will have to pay. I love to be able to spend genuine time with my brides without them feeling any pressure. This is not the sort of decision you should make knowing that you have a limited number of gowns to try on and worrying about how much is it costing you. Although our consultations are free we offer our brides a one on one service where we will offer as much or as little advice as the bride wants.

O

How do you select the designers that you stock and what do you look for in dresses? Firstly, I look for reliable designers that can deliver consistently and on time. Not all designers cover all of the designs I feel I need to have in store which is why I have a range. I look for good quality fabric, suitable structure and boning, colours, detail and a mixture of modern and traditional styles. I love very feminine designs and fabrics and I have to be careful I don’t end up with a whole boutique of the same dresses!

wner Felicity Menzies puts a lot of time and effort into selecting the most stunning gowns and offering extremely friendly and efficient service, helping to ease the process of choosing a dress for nervous brides. In the wake of planning her own wedding, we caught up with Felicity to learn more about her passion behind her store and how her experience has helped her plan her own nuptials. What made you want to start your own bridal store? I have always wanted to own and run my own business and even when I was working full time for other people, I always had some sort of project on the side – a market stall selling my own clothes, baking, cake decorating, painting - so it was only a matter of time before I had a business of my own that I could work at full time. I like to think that this all began when I was 5 at my elder brother’s high school gala. I had some pocket money to spend and no sooner had we arrived and I had spotted my item to purchase, a chapel length veil! My brother was not happy about having his sister walk around for the rest of the day wearing the veil. I was over the moon! 38

I love to sew and create; this is my main passion behind owning my own bridal store. And of course as my name means ‘happiness’ I LOVE to make people feel special and happy! A lot of places charge for initial consultations. Why do you choose to offer free consultations? I think this is a no-brainer. I wouldn’t feel

What are the latest styles and trends for weddings in 2012? There is still a strong trend for accents of colour, particularly black, on wedding gowns which I think looks very striking. Organza is right up there in terms of fabric and gaining more and more interest is lace. This has always been a popular choice for brides but every day I am asked for lace gowns. I adore lace and with more designs available there will be a lot of happy lace wearing brides to come. Have you ever encountered any bad bridezillas? I can honestly say I have never encountered

what I would call a bridezilla. I think most of this has to do with how I am with my brides. I believe that all of my brides should enter a calm and relaxed environment at Felicitys Bridal and I am positive this helps our brides push back any bridezilla tendencies. I offer a complete service whereby all alterations are completed in store. By being there every step of the way for each bride, everyone is happy! I do wonder who does get to see this side of the bride though! What big plans did you have for your own wedding? LOTS! My fiancé always knew I would have big ideas for our wedding and after meeting my Mum I think he got a better idea of what we mean by big! Our main concern is ensuring everyone has a fabulous time. We have really paid close attention to all of the details that will ensure a fun day for everyone. From the peacock made entirely from flowers, Mum growing all of the flowers for the bouquets and marquee to the hundreds and hundreds of pieces of vintage crystal we all scoured second hand stores for. And then of course there is my dress, 4 bridesmaids, 4 groomsmen and 2 flowergirls. What have you taken from your experience to implement into your own wedding? Talking to brides all day every day gave me so many ideas! From invitations to the photo booth, I have loved discussing all things wedding related with my brides. We have shared our concerns about bridesmaid dresses fitting and stag party’s. What tips or advice can you offer brides when planning their own weddings? I learnt very quickly what it felt like to be a bride looking for her wedding dress. I was positive that I would not find anything that would suit me which is crazy and I have a whole shop full of dresses! I know this is the number one worry for brides before they start the process. I also learnt that the best time to try on wedding dresses is when you are ready to make a decision. Set out that day thinking ‘I will find my dress today’. Once you have made the decision be happy, match your fabric sample up to the rest of the wedding pieces and feel excited that you will look absolutely amazing. And you will!! ne of nature’s best kept secrets…. Natural pink diamonds are one of the world’s most rare and precious gemstones. Pink diamonds have spent millions of years forming their exquisite colour. It is not completely known what causes the colour in these diamonds, adding to their allure and mystery. Due to their rarity, pink diamonds are highly sought after and prized among collectors, jewellers and celebrities. Pink diamonds are predominately found in the Argyle mines in Western Australia who supply close to 90 per cent of the world’s pink diamonds. our Prince Charming has proposed! The next step is finding the perfect wedding dress. Renée Bridal creates and customizes simple, elegant and romantic gowns. Each piece is uniquely constructed to enhance the bride’s personal style and complement the theme and atmosphere of the wedding. Renée is inundated with emails from happy brides saying she had made them the dress of their dreams and that everyone wanted to know the designer. One of the lovely aspects of couture is that it involves an enjoyable ritual-like process of choosing a fabric that sets off your skin tone and a cut that flatters your figure. The first appointment is typically 6 -8 months before the big day. Renée welcomes clients to her beautiful, professional set-up in her Ellerslie home - a more relaxed environment then her previous city centre boutique. After perusing Renée’s sample range of unique designs, the brideto-be decides on the perfect silhouette and chooses her fabric from a huge range of whites. There are even more colourful bridesmaid options. The made-to-measure process then begins with a calico fitting. Several more fittings with the chosen fabric, proper undergarments, jewellery and shoes ensure a beautiful bride.

The Best Advice from the Experts, on Choosing a Wedding Cake

W

hen you are looking for a wedding cake, take the following steps. Firstly set a budget by doing some research on the internet. Be realistic about what you can achieve for your budget. Remember the more decorative the cake, the greater the price. If your budget is under $500, then an effective choice is a one tier cake on a stand. Do your research. Ask for recommendations from your venue or other suppliers. These people know the business and will give you good advice. When you have found someone whose work you like, ask them the following: • How long have you been doing this? • Do you have more than one person who can make my cake? • Can you provide any recommendations from previous clients? • Then ask yourself - do you feel comfortable with the supplier? • When choosing your cake don’t be concerned with number of serves, choose the cake for the look you want. A good cake maker will give you advice about the best use of the cake at your wedding. It is beautiful food but food nevertheless and is made to be enjoyed. The cake and the flowers are the stars of your wedding decorations so have fun setting the style . Ph. +64 9 638 6499 www.citycake.com - Maureen Keene, part owner of City Cake Company

Prestige Chauffeur Service Eye Magazine recently caught up with Tim Simpkins to find out about the deluxe services that Regency Cabs have to offer and discover why their service is of a stand out quality.

What sets Regency apart from other taxi companies? Regency cars provide an environment of luxury and professionalism not normally found in other transport providers. We pride ourselves on providing a highly professional and premium chauffeured service and our clients advise us of a variety of different benefits, one often mentioned in feedback is that we provide a quiet, calm and unflustered environment that helps clients relax during their busy day. What services do you offer for weddings and other events? Regency Cars are a discreet chauffeur service, we mostly operate unmarked cars (with no signage) for our client base that prefer and expect a premium level of customized service. Our service can be standalone or we can work in conjunction with other providers whether that is a motor launch, helicopter or airline. For weddings we dress our vehicles to the requirements of the bride and groom, normally with appropriately coloured ribbons. We can be proactively involved with the overall occasion working closely with other parties like the photographer or Master of Ceremonies, or we can simply provide the transport service. Our drivers are experienced operators who can add a bit of calmness and bring an element of luxury to begin the whole occasion. A growing area of our business is graduations and school balls where a premium service adds to the overall event. In addition we often find parents confirming the service is also provided for the return trip to ensure a safe and timely end to the evening.

50

Who traditionally uses the transport services you have available? Regency cars are a transport solution for the discerning traveller. We provide services to the general executive client base via our marked cars (with signs on) typically to and from appointments. We also provide the unmarked service to executives, celebrities, VIP’s and high net worth individuals who prefer to be transported via a more discreet and highly professional chauffeured service. Most of our prebooked service provision is utilised in this way and is more associated with a dedicated chauffeured offering. What are the benefits of being an account holder with Regency? The Regency account holder knows that we are focussed on their satisfaction with every journey. We can provide a variety of account customisations that individualise our service to the required outcome of our client. We have an expansive reporting capability that enables our executive/commercial clients to accurately trace and allocate costs. Regency pride itself on being a ‘professional chauffer service’, how do you implement this quality of service? All our drivers are owner operators and are committed to the highest level of service relative to the need and desire of our clients. We have recently implemented a more rigorous application procedure to ensure we only accept the best operators and we regularly test our service delivery through many mechanisms and are proactive in looking to improve our service in every detail. The Grand Wedding Show Make the hard decisions easy with help from the biggest wedding show in Auckland

O

nce again, this Autumn countless ‘brides to be’ will be flocking to The Grand Wedding Show at Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland. This is New Zealand’s premium wedding show, where all is on display from frocks to flowers, hair designs to honeymoons. Eye Magazine talks to Lisa Charteris, Managing Director of The Grand Wedding Show to find out more about her and what these ‘brides to be’ can expect from this exciting event. What inspired you to start a wedding show? I was actually working for another wedding show some years ago and although I loved it at the time, there were always aspects of the show I wanted to change or new ideas I wanted to try, but as I didn’t own the show, I didn’t have any say in the way it was run. So after working for that show for a few years I decided it was time to branch out on my own and start my own wedding show, a show Lisa Charteris, that I would want to come to if I was getting Managing Director married again, a show that had everything a bride could need when planning her wedding, but also really importantly, done in a very stylish way. When was the first show held? I launched the first Grand Wedding Show on the 13th of April 2008 after leaving my previous job with another Auckland based wedding show. It was a huge risk and there were many times of very hard emotional and financial lows, but I think it’s made me a stronger person for it. I literally put the first show together in a matter of months but luckily its kept going and I’m so thankful for the support of my exhibitors that it’s just getting better and better each year. What’s the best way to navigate through the show? There is one entrance and one exit so brides can easily make their way through the exhibitor floor, into either the seminar room or the dress sale room, then down onto the fashion show floor then back out the same way they came in. 60

What sets The Grand Wedding Show apart from other expos? I focus on putting on a very up-market show which has a high standard of exhibitor at it. I am very proud of every one of the companies who attends my show, to me they are all like family, and I know that they provide the best possible service that they can to the brides. I offer the wedding seminars as a unique part of the show which you don’t get at other wedding shows. This gives the brides a more in depth view of some of the suppliers on show and allows them the valuable Q&A afterwards. I also really try to minimize congestion for the show. This is an issue with many expos, especially when they are over many floors and brides end up having to go up and down numerous stairs, so I try and have an easy flow through the exhibitor floor, and then with the fashion shows being on a different level, everyone has plenty of room and breathing space which just makes for a more comfortable show experience I feel.

The Grand Wedding Show Dates: Sunday April 15th , Sunday September 16th Time: 9am till 4pm Where: SkyCity Convention Centre. Tickets are $18.00 and for that a bride receives a show bag, copy of the show guide, free glass of Champagne, entry into the main convention centre of exhibitors, entry into both Fashion Shows, plus entry into the ‘Designer Wedding Dress Clearance Sale’ and the wedding seminars. Waikato Weddings

Choose a Winter Wedding

The diverse Hamilton and Waikato region offers something unique for your special day. Ease pre wedding stress with a rejuvenating natural mineral spa and pampering escape, plus the variety of adventure activities provide great options for the groom and groomsmen. Historical homesteads and coastal lodges offer everything from ceremony to reception in one location. Perhaps an underground cathedral sized cave followed by a country hideaway to celebrate the evening. Say your ‘I do’s’ amongst stunning landscaped gardens and treat your guests to a reception in an award-winning winery. With each venue option comes equally as beautiful photo opportunities - beachside locations are rivaled by rolling green landscapes and bushclad mountains, all providing endless possibilities for your wedding. www.hamiltonwaikato.com/conventions

Most people choose to have their wedding during summer, making October to March the peak wedding season. This is the busiest time of year for venues, photographers, wedding planners and all of the crucial people involved in your wedding. Not only are venues easier to book, they can offer cheaper rates due to it being off-season. A winter wedding opens up many other options you may have never considered – think about picturesque snow and mountain locations such as Taupo or Queenstown. Don’t let the cold weather scare you. Wraps, capes and pashminas can compliment your gown beautifully and add a touch of difference. The summer heat can be too intense for the suited up groomsmen, your guests and even YOU the bride! Nothing is worse than getting heatstroke on your wedding day, not to mention perspiration and worrying that your make up will melt off!

Tips for Wanaka Weddings • Wanaka was recently named one of the top 10 most romantic places in the world to be married, so demand is very high. Allow at least one year to plan your wedding as popular venues, caterers, photographers and celebrants can get snapped up two years ahead. • A helpful website is www.wanakaweddings.co.nz This site has everything from hair stylists, florists, make up artists, accommodation, etc to make your life less stressful. - Maxine Makeham, Director of 63b Catering Ltd, The Venue Wanaka and also Wanaka Marquee and Party Hire

Wedding Getaways Deciding to have an island wedding will make your special day even more memorable. Beautiful white sand beaches, stunning sunsets, swaying palm trees, tropical backdrops – the picturesque setting is just one reason for having your wedding day in the Pacific Islands. Many resorts and travel agents offer full packages that include organizing the reception and ceremony as well as accommodation and travel plans for you and your guests. Everything from flights to what flavour cake, can be taken care of, leaving you time to relax and explore the island. Choosing to getaway to a remote location can also make your ceremony much more private and intimate and above all else the weather will be amazing.

5 Top Tips: 1. Know your budget, be realistic and honest. Like anything, the more you have, the more expensive it will be. If there are limitations, don’t try and spread the cost over everything. Choose where you would like the emphasis to be, it might be the bridal bouquets or a couple of ‘wow’ arrangements at the entrance. 2. Book your florist as far in advance as you can. Good florists are often booked 6-12 months in advance and they need time to order and organise, especially when they are located more remotely. 3. If you don’t particularly care about flowers and they aren’t important to your big day - this won’t make them cheaper! Choose an alternative such as candles or something home made instead. 4. Flower colours and types vary greatly, what is seen in the magazines and other countries is not necessarily going to be available in New Zealand. Your florist will be able to guide you on the most appropriate options for the time of the year. 5. To get the most out of your consultation with your florist, be prepared. Source some pictures of bouquets and flowers you particularly like. This will allow your florist to get a good understanding of the kind of look you want to create and then your time can be used more effectively.

When Only Fabulous Will Do

I

n 1995 renowned chef Sue Fleischl decided to use her culinary passion and business skills to set up a catering company that could give any event a glamorous touch with fashionable food! By establishing The Great Catering Company, Sue has gained tremendous success and the company now sits as the leader in both private and corporate catering. With a passionate, experienced and driven team, The Great Catering Co ensure that every event stays true to their philosophy of ‘Serving, Amazing, Anywhere’. Eye Magazine caught up with Sue recently to learn more about the success and difference behind this great company. What made you decide to set up The Great Catering Co in the first place? I wanted to change my career as a chef into something that would fit in more with my lifestyle and be more interactive with people. After freelancing for the best caterers in Melbourne for 5 years, I came back to NZ and started up The Great Catering Co in my living room! How does the Great Catering Co set themselves apart from other catering services? What sets us apart is our people. I believe in employing real chefs to cook real food. I also want our wait staff to be full of personality. My Culinary co-ordinators are really people focused and always focus on “what does the client want?” and ‘How can we make that work?”. How do you ensure your philosophy of ‘Serving, Amazing, Anywhere’ is maintained with every job you do? Is this an example of “Serving Amazing Anywhere?” is a question I often ask my team. If the answer is no, then don’t serve it and do it again! It is a good reminder of what we stand for and what we need to achieve. You have a delicious looking menu available, how do you pick the right dishes to serve and how often do you change this menu? Our menus are changed twice annually and 74

you will see from our website that they are very extensive. We often customise menus for clients as well, to either give them variety or meet their needs. Keeping to seasonal produce and supporting NZ products is a strong focus in our menus. My head chef, Chef Harald is great at sourcing good products and keeping the menus interesting. The Great Catering Company employs a very high standard of chefs and experienced friendly staff, why is this important? With any business, you are only good as the people you employ. Bad chefs make bad food. Grumpy chefs are the same. Our kitchen has a great atmosphere and any pan throwers are quickly dealt with! It is the same on the floor, people with no personality will never “serve amazing anywhere”. You have gained the reputation of being the undisputed market leader in the corporate, private and weddings market? How do you think you have achieved this? Again I think our success comes down to my people and the personalities I like to surround myself with. Our team has different personalities to deal with different scenarios, it is a careful balance of putting the right people on the right functions. Why do so many couples choose you and your team to cater for their weddings? We LOVE weddings! I think this comes through when we meet with our brides. Also having a strong focus on “listen to your client” and advice as need be to make everything work is what I often discuss. We do get a lot of very positive feedback on our culinary co ordinators as they really do care. Finally do you have any tips or advice for couples who are planning their upcoming nuptials or any other types of events? Book early, communicate often, send lots of visuals on what you like and dislike. Cover off all plans for anything that may go wrong - like weather bombs and garden sprinklers that may start in the middle of the night inside your marquee! Get all the advise and guidance you can from your caterer, they have done this many times before. Ph: +64 9 376 1424 www.greatcatering.co.nz

Vibe One Dance Pushing the Creative Boundaries

A

uckland based dance company Vibe One Dance have had a big year. As well as performing for The Radio Network at the Paper Plus Masquerade Awards, the Sony Pictures Premiere of “Burlesque” & selling out their RISE show for nation-wide charity CanTeen, they’ve also shot their first Burlesque music video in Auckland, and become an internet sensation with over 20,000 views of their “Smooth Criminal” dance performance on YouTube – making them the second most viewed Michael Jackson video in the world in December 2011 and the seventh most viewed in the nation. Creative Director & Choreographer Kimberley James credits the dedication and hard work of her team for much of the company’s success. “Without the creative talent of so many people, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve so much. We’ve collaborated with some of our favourite performers, photographers, illustrators, costume designers, vocalists & videographers in the past year & it’s really created huge momentum. It’s a real privilege to be able to combine their talent with our passion for dance to create something exhilarating. Putting on a show or filming a music video takes immense amounts of work behind-the-scenes & it’s a real testament to the talent we have here in

82

NZ that we’ve managed to achieve such a high standard of output in such a short period of time”. Vibe One Dance has continued to push the creative boundaries by becoming the first company in the country to provide Burlesque, Lady Gaga & Michael Jackson dance classes as well as being one of the first to provide Hiphop & Heels classes to a wide range of students and performers. “We’ve found that the dance industry is continually evolving. Our client base constantly want newer and more interesting styles. Artists like Gaga, MJ & Beyonce, shows like X-Factor & So You Think You Can Dance, as well as films like ‘Burlesque’ have really inspired audiences to start dancing again, in a form of fitness that they love!” With a philanthropic director, students & performers get the chance to be part of a number of opportunities throughout the year, including the RISE Dance Showcase for CanTeen every December, Daffodil Day Britomart Flash Mobs for The Cancer Society, & most recently the coveted half-time slot at a Breakers Basketball game. Vibe One also provides dancers & talent for numerous corporate events, classes and hens nights. Find out more at www.aucklanddance.co.nz or join them on www.facebook.com/vibeone.dance

Kiwi Burlesque Sensation Introducing Miss Leda Petit, a glamorous and gorgeous performer who is on her way to becoming New Zealand’s first internationally renowned burlesque showgirl. Miss Petit is a talented and devoted choreographer, performer, promoter and ambitious advocate for the local burlesque scene.

W

ith over four years of experience, including shows with the Hootchy Kootchy Girls and Petit Cheval, as well as a regular variety night show at Auckland’s Cassette9, Miss Petit has certainly made a name for herself as New Zealand’s Queen of Burlesque. As founder of Petit Cheval Burlesque, a burlesque event planning company, Miss Petit is constantly striving to promote burlesque to be recognised as an art form amongst Kiwi men and woman. She believes that burlesque is “…about entertainment for entertainments sake…purely about the spectacle and the glamour…” Her flourishing company provides a series of exquisite and entertaining shows,

“With each show, I strive to make each Petit Cheval Burlesque better than the last, to immerse the audience in a show that involves them and draws them in rather than observing from afar,” declares Miss Petit, “A true cabaret show.” Miss Petit’s stunning body and 23 inch waist is complimented by beautiful costumes, opulent props and pinup hair and make up, that all combine into her signature style of classic 40’s and 50’s burlesque glamour. Her signature prop is an elaborate, giant birdbath that she had especially crafted to leave audiences in awe during her closing act. With Miss Petit winning New Zealand’s first burlesque competition in 2009, as well as winning the Stole the Limelight Award

in the Tempo Dance Festival she is clearly the top entertainer within New Zealand. She has appeared on various Good Morning shows, 20/20, Alt TV & Maori TV; as well as the NZ Herald, Next Magazine (as a rising star), Get Frank Men’s Magazine and 1AM. To top it all off, she has had a fabulous pleasure of working with Mika (a Kiwi Cabaret icon), OSCAR nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes, fashion designer Lucy Boshier, Pavement Magazines’ Barney McDonald, and Eve Gordon With future plans to implement a full cabaret show using the highest calibre of talent, Miss Petit is well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming an internationally recognised burlesque showgirl. 83

Get In On The Secret The Eye and Face Institute is the ace up Miss New Zealand contestant Katrina Turner’s sleeve.

T

he beautiful candidate knows whom to trust. In addition to their facials and permanent makeup services, the salon has two new machines that take their treatments to the next level. The salon’s new CO2 Fractional Laser machine helps reduce the appearance of lines, scarring and acne. Quick and non-invasive, the procedure is an affordable option for those looking for a mini facelift effect. Tiny pixel-like damage to treated areas stimulates collagen growth, leaving skin smooth and blemish-free. Clients can see great results after 1–3 treatments, with only a slight redness that fades in a few days. The salon’s slimming machine is the only one in New Zealand. State of the art technology dissipates the fat nodules we know as cellulite. Non-invasive and safe, the roller-like treatment firms the connective tissues and subdural structures that decay with age. The Eye and Face Institute also specialises in permanent makeup, also known as Intradermal Pigmentation. Suitable for all ages, from teenagers to 90 year olds, permanent makeup is perfect for gym bunnies, sportspeople, busy women and those who find makeup a hassle to apply. Eyebrows, eyeliner and lips are the most common treatments. Lips can be enhanced with colour, with benefits to size and shape. Subtle colour can fill in sparse eyebrows to redefine the face. Eyeliner can be applied boldly or softly. Remedial tattooing and scar removal is also a speciality. The staff have over 40 years combined experience so feel free to discuss exactly what you want when you call for a consultation. The Eye and Face Institute is conveniently located at 29 Melanesia Road, Kohimarama, Auckland.

ith the summer racing carnivals coming to an end and the temperature in the weather changing, one thing we are all looking forward to are the four days of quality thoroughbred racing that showcase the sport in Christchurch during autumn. With free entry and activities that keep the young one’s occupied, this is the perfect way to entertain the whole family and as marketing manager Chris Rowe emphasises, “We get some lovely autumn weather and with our park like surrounds, Riccarton Park is a great place to spend the day with friends and family”. Chris also mentions how this timeframe is popular with corporate customers taking advantage of the magnificent top level suites to host their guests. The racing is also impressive with the Valachi Downs South Island Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes continuing to highlight Day 1 of the Carnival on Saturday March 24th. This Canterbury Racing – Hororata day will also feature the Seaton Family Memorial Hororata Gold Cup. Christchurch Casino Easter Cup leads Day 2 on Saturday April 14th. The three year-old fillies also contest the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes partaking in the third race in the Southern Filly Series. Riccarton Park love to promote and be a part of this day as it includes the popular Riccarton Park Punters Challenge with a fabulous $5,000 prize pool. A $500 betting fund and $50 per person to cover food and drinks is all that’s required for a chance at the prize! You can then head off and watch the Crusaders take on the Stormers at 7.35pm. A similar pattern to March 24th when they play the Cheetahs. The Group 3, Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup then follows a week later on Day 3, April 21st. Recent winners include Balmuse, Flight Point, The Meista, Bruce Almighty and Inferno - reflecting the quality of the field on show! Day 4 and the Premier date on May 5th features the Great Easter Stakes over 1400 metres while the two-year-old stakes rated Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes remains the other feature.

Then on Sunday, top off the weekend by watching the Crusaders get even by playing the Reds at 4pm. Horse of the Carnival, supported by NRM and Trainer of the Carnival competitions also feature across the four days. To also add to the excitement of racing and rugby, harness racing at Addington features on the Friday evenings prior to the first three days, so no matter what you enjoy there are plenty of events happening in Chrischurch to make up a good weekend. Autumn Trotting Carnival at Alexandra Park Alexandra Park’s Autumn Trotting Carnival was already one of the biggest race meetings in New Zealand - now it is set to get even bigger.

T

hat could add a taste of TransTasman rivalry to the racing extravaganza which starts at Auckland’s home of night racing on April 20th. The carnival has long been one of the big three for the season at Alexandra Park but has been boosted massively by the inaugural Anzac Cup on April 27th, a new $200,000 race set to bring some of Australia’s best trotters to the city. This compliments the Majestic Horse Floats Greenlane Cup a week earlier and the time-honoured $150,000 Canam Rowe Cup on May 4th. Waiting for the Aussie superstars when they get here will be Kiwi hero I Can Doosit (pictured winning the Canam Rowe Cup in 2011), 4 is1 on 9 the 8 Averge l t o o G S Tonly h aNew l f Zealand’s _ p . p fourth d f ever Pa ge who of N becoming millionaire trotter, a milestone he should reach during the carnival.

Trans-Tasman rivalry aside the carnival also plays host to an array of great age group races, in excess of $1.5 million in stakes, from the Taylor Mile and Dawson Harford & Partners NZ Messenger to Trotting Derbys and lucrative two-year-old events, so something for everyone. And with Alexandra Park offering New Zealand’s most complete under-cover sporting facilities, autumn weather won’t be a problem. Packages range from the elite level Top of the Park and the wonderful Tasman Room to the recently-refurbished, The Alex Bar & Eatery, where the casual surroundings are perfect for those wanting to enjoy the racing as well as the myriad of sports shown on the huge banks of televisions. 1 1For 3 more / 0 3information / 1 2 , contact 9 : 4 09 1 6305660 A M dining@alexpark.co.nz www.alexpark.co.nz

2012 BMW Magic Millions Carnival & Race Day When they say all that glitters is not gold, the BMW Magic Millions Carnival would be an exception to the rule. The culmination of international celebrities, racing’s elite and world-renowned beaches, makes the Gold Coast during January the place to be!

he Carnival included two weeks of events with the R.M.Williams Launch Party, the BMW 2YO Barrier Draw, Women’s Racing events, BMW Magic Millions Race Day and most importantly the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales. Katie Page and Gerry Harvey took over ownership of Magic Millions in 2011 and have taken the Magic Millions thoroughbred sales and carnival to new heights. The thoroughbred industry is one that they are passionate about and this year’s focus on encouraging new-comers into the thoroughbred industry was important to the successful business duo. The carnival was kicked off with the New Owners Information Day where leading trainers Peter Moody and Gai Waterhouse spoke to guests about their experience in the racing industry, followed by the launch of the world’s first Magic Millions Racing Women’s bonus exclusively for Women. Katie Page’s vision is to incentivise female involvement in the sport, which is one shared and supported by many industry experts. For New Zealanders and Australians, attending the races is commonplace however; few get to experience the thrill of horse ownership. The Magic Millions Racing Women’s Bonus creates a real opportunity for women interested in racing to form a syndicate with their girlfriends with the aim of competing in one of the richest horse races in Australasia. Following a week of glamorous lunches and the commencement of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, the pinnacle event was the 2012 BMW Magic Millions Race Day, which was again heralded as a huge success by all attendees, cementing its eminence as Australasia’s richest sales incentive race day. With a prize pool of $2 million, the 2012 BMW Magic Millions 2yo 92

Katie Page, Gerry Harvey & Gai Waterhouse at the Magic Millions Racing Women’s Launch

Classic turned out to be a very successful day for Gai Waterhouse with the quinella, although not before a dispute confirmed the win for Driefontein over stable-mate No Looking Back, with Alezan Thunder third. The $1Million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3yo Guineas went to Punch On followed by Easy Running and Happy Hussy. This commenced another year of strong prize money results with Magic Millions sales graduates having received over $60million in prize-money this season alone, no doubt a reflection of the fact that Magic Millions is the leading source of Group and Listed race-winning performers throughout Australasia. The Yearling Sales auction, held at the Magic Millions Sales Complex at Bundall, saw close to 500 quality horses sold at a gross of $62,172,500, with individuals selling at an average of $125,855. The buyers’ market was dominated by Australians with international buyers representing 11% of sales, including those from Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, South Africa and New Zealand. The sale’s top priced yearling, prepared under the Edinburgh Park draft, was the Fastnet Rock colt out of Rose of Cimmaron sold to Coolmore Australia for $960,000. Redoute’s Choice remained the leading sire at the sale despite increasing competition from Fastnet Rock, with More the Ready also in the top 3 and all yearlings from these stallions averaging over $200,000. The next big sale on the Magic Millions calendar is the 2012 Magic Millions National Sale with select sales held from May 28 to 8 June, 2012. Mr Opinionator

U

sually it is quite easy to recognise someone trying to shaft us either by trying to sell us something we don’t want or upsize something we have already decided to buy. The intent is transparent and the irritation easily dealt with. From a simple “no thank you” to a “#### off” or even lengthy dialogues which end in an abrupt hang up! No, what really gets my goat is Self Serving Incompetence. An example. A close friend has been engaged in messy relationship property litigation with a mad ex for the past 5 years. Yes, 5 Years!!! – the pot is about $2.5 million and after the initial mudslinging and the offer given was $1.2. This is where the self serving bit comes in. Encouraged by a $550.00 per hour legal advisor the offer was rejected. “We think you are hiding something” – “I’m going to make you pay” – “My hero lawyer doesn’t trust you” Five years later the court orders a payment of $900,000.00. Close you might say. What’s the problem? The bloody problem is the $350,000 legal bill for the Ex. Good job, you say. Serves them right. True but what about the other half’s $400,000.00 legal bill!!! And unlike civil jurisdictions, costs do not follow the event. Add to that the trauma, stress and shear bloody waste of time and you are getting my drift. Self Serving Incompetence. Another example. The current wharf dispute.

Surely we can all agree that the purpose of a wharf is to load and unload cargo. The purpose of the wharf is not in itself to employ. Sorry union but logic says the need to employ is a consequence of the need to load and unload. Enter the concept of a union. Without a fight, without a conflict there is no need for a union – therefore no need for union representatives – paid representative, unions fees – fighting funds. Everyone looking out for themselves, after all we do have Employment Laws!!! So the creation of conflict strikes and now court injunctions ( more damned lawyers!) suddenly gives purpose to those creating the conflict. Self Serving Incompetence. I could rant on ad infinitum – at least half of what the council does and charges us for, Liquidators, Bureaucrats, Members of Parliament. I propose a Star Chamber to deal with self serving incompetence. Petitioners claiming to have suffered from the incompetence and respondents accused of self serving. Brief oral submissions, brief because the presumption of guilt and the close minded bigotry of the judges, followed by castration (if an option) banishment and public humiliation. Did I mention me and my mates will be the judges. Euro Bar, the venue? Oh – and yes – no payment required. We’ll do it for love!! Incompetence, without the self serving. 95

Eat, Live, Love and Laugh In the middle of New Zealand’s biggest city, Yosipa Prusac from Merediths Restaurant cherishes a life full of the ‘simple’ things with her three young daughters.

I

believe life is to create beauty, not to destroy it. I treasure a slower pace at home in amongst the hectic nature of life, especially with the demands of motherhood. My daughters love to pick the strawberries, passion fruit and herbs from the garden that we planted. I bought four chicks about six months ago and now they are finally hatching eggs. The girls love to collect them and even better, love to eat them!” Growing up in the West of Sydney, Yosipa’s parents immigrated from Croatia in 1969 with their four daughters, Yosipa and her brother were born on Australian soil. Her parents generation was ‘a hard life’ so she was disciplined and not spoilt with things but fresh food was always on the menu for Yosipa and her family. “For breakfast we ate fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and spring onions from the garden with toast. We didn’t have many materialistic things, just basics and the things that really matter. My dad built a smokehouse and we ate smoked fish and meats. My mother pickled cabbages and onions and cooked amazing, tasty food, with minimal ingredients.” There was a time when her father made his own wine as well. He bought a kids pool, set it up in the garage, filled it with grapes and Yosipa remembers fondly that she and her brother got to stomp around in new gumboots squishing out the juice. In her home and garden she has things with sentiment, which create a place with meaning where she can express her ideas and be surrounded by comfort. She has photos of family and the girl’s artwork

from school on the walls and stuck on the fridge. “I am not a hoarder and don’t see the purpose of clutter. I planted each of my girl’s their own trees (the placenta was planted with each tree) and they have flourished.” Yosipa has always enjoyed being creative and finds inspiration in many places. Last June she bought a bunch of fabric to make her daughters a quilt each for Christmas. “I was so busy that I didn’t have time to sew them but then this February I set my mind to it and made all three in less than a week.” Living sustainably is very important for Yosipa. She appreciates nature and wishes more people would take care of the earth by believing that they can make a huge difference by changing habits in the smallest of ways. On the weekend, Yosipa and her daughters enjoy the farmers markets in Clevedon and Matakana, and she hopes that by experiencing these things, her philosophies will also become a way of life for her children, as well as anyone else she happens to pass by. “Now that I am older I have a greater appreciation for the way I was bought up and I want more people to know that the simple things in life are the best. Family, friends and wholesome food!”

Create an Exclusive Look for Your Home with Kelly Hoppen “An ageless interior can be remoulded and gently evolved so that it remains timely and right for the moment at the same time as it serves your needs.” Kelly Hoppen

P

rovidentially, that philosophy is in keeping with that of Lis Burt, owner of one of Auckland’s most exciting interior showrooms and businesses: Mercatini. As well as stocking Kelly Hoppen, Mercatini has continued to develop key and exclusive relationships with leading international brands, making it possible for discerning New Zealanders to create the homes of their dreams. Obtaining the exclusive rights to bring Kelly Hoppen into New Zealand, Lis has been delighted with the response from both designers and clients. “Kelly’s range fits seamlessly together, making it easy to work with. We can create a whole look and feel to a house, not just supply one or two stand-alone pieces. It has been embraced by individual clients as well as interior designers and architects. The range also has great commercial appeal.” Known for years as “The Queen of Taupe”, Kelly Hoppen needs little introduction to those of us interested in

8

interior design. Today, a more appropriate title may be “Celebrity Interior Designer” and Kelly can now count Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, as clients. Kelly has been commissioned to modernise the 17th century Kensington Palace apartment the royal couple will move into later this year. In her latest book, ‘Ideas’, Kelly’s philosophy on making your home your sanctuary is unpretentiously narrated and beautifully illustrated. Full of handy tips from the ‘cardinal sins of display’ to reminding you that those candles you bought are for lighting, not just looking at, it is a book you will constantly refer to. Although Kelly has built a signature style on using a monochromatic palette, she has evolved this into a more feminine, rounder look; using form, light and balancing tones with different textures to create layers. In the forward to ‘Ideas’, Kelly’s thoughts are eloquently shared and her inspiration for design is infectious. “Never underestimate the

designer

power of balance and harmony because, once this is deeply rooted in the very foundation of your mind and your home, anything and everything are possible,” says Kelly. Above all, Kelly’s personality, passion for her career and aim to create homes that improve and change her client’s lives for the better are evident throughout. She understands the importance of having a space where her clients can relax and have fun. “The whole idea of downtime centres on playtime at home.” Again, this is a perfect fit for Mercatini. With a full interior design service, Lis also loves changing the existing as well as creating from a blank canvas. Mercatini has an exclusive agency with Christopher Guy and supports key Italian brands such as Marchetti, known for its beautiful walnut extending dining tables and Borgo de Mastri – fabulous travertine topped tables. For outdoor areas, Domus Ventures is hard to beat and Mercatini also has the largest showroom in the country for the international brand, HALO. Whilst Mercatini supplies all the above brands, Lis emphasises she can source any

particular piece from any brand a client or designer may require through her extensive worldwide contacts. She has also recently completed exciting commercial fit outs for new bars, cafés and restaurants in Sky City. As Lis explains many of her clients are international travellers and have seen the large array of options available. “Take Kelly Hoppen, for example. Many of my clients

have seen the range displayed in Selfridges, London and want to recreate the look in their homes here. This is now possible.” Located on Carlton Gore, Newmarket, there is plenty of parking outside the large and airy showroom. Ph: +64 9 529 4200 www.mercatini.co.nz www.kellyhoppenretail.com 9

L

iving close to the beach on Auckland’s North Shore, Shelleece draws much of her inspiration from the hues and textures of nature, including naturally, the beaches and ocean around her. Travelling around Europe and Asia she was filled with inspiration and came home keen to enrol in Design School. Shelleece actually began her design career in the fashion industry, where she gained years of hands-on experience with fabrics and textures and developed an eye for detail and appreciation for different colour hues. Today, her design style is eclectic and visually exciting with a talent for mixing different eras, textures, colours and artwork. Shelleece’s interiors are luxurious yet ultimately liveable. Experienced in creating interiors for new homes and businesses, she also specialises in refurbishing and styling existing spaces. In this issue, Shelleece looks at different types of flooring and floor coverings and the options available to complete the aesthetic of any room. She also shares some gorgeous portfolio images with us. ‘Of course it’s very important to choose the right flooring for the look and feel of your home,’ says Shelleece. Decisions on whether to use a beautiful wood, a luxurious wool carpet, a statement rug or a mix of different flooring types has to be made in accordance with the desired end result and budget. This can be a difficult choice and many elements have to be considered. Wooden Flooring and Carpet Today, there are an abundance of wood flooring choices from gorgeous French oaks to eco sustainable options. Often when renovating older homes native wooden floor boards can be discovered and a decision of whether to polish the boards can be made. An important point to consider when choosing your flooring is which wood fits your preferred colour palette and style of home best. Shelleece considers the lifestyle of her clients when recommending carpet options. Whether they have allergies or pets and which pile cut would suit their aesthetics. Rugs As you will see Shelleece often adds fabulous statement rugs into her interiors. Working closely with companies such as Designer Rugs, she has the best rug collections at hand. ‘These rugs are artworks within themselves and real unique, signature pieces. We can custom design any style and colour and have it made just for you. The possibilities are endless,’ explains Shelleece. Over the next 12 months, we look forward to more ‘details of design’ with Shelleece and sharing more of her exciting projects. 021 458221 www.shelleecestanaway.com

is finely detailed work can be found in galleries and homes around the world. His skill and vision encourage us to go beyond the physical and to experience something of the spirituality which for Tim, is an integral part of these landscapes. Tim paints real mountains, real lakes and real skies, but he is also deeply aware of the Spirit of Place. Perhaps it is the synergy of the factual and the intuitively understood that imbues his work with such extraordinary qualities. He paints the places he loves because they feed and excite him and because they are beautiful. We intuitively understand this and the emotional response they engender in us is both welcome and deeply satisfying. Tim first experienced the wonder of these beautiful places as a boy in awe travelling down the West Coast, through the Haast Pass to Queenstown. Painting the Matukituki, Wakatipu, Manapouri, Te Anau, Wanaka and much more of this remarkable country has taught him so much about himself. He feels such a strong spiritual sense of belonging in these areas and he is constantly drawn back to the fold. Using the finest linens, brushes and paints available, Tim’s art is of exceptional quality. His philosophy when choosing materials is simple - only the best of the best will do. As many as 30 layers of transparent glazes and interference pigments are applied to achieve the mesmerising play of light in these works. The utter perfection and seeming effortlessness of Tim’s artistry belies many years of toil and determination, experiment and frustration, without which such excellence would not have been possible. The fresh, innovative quality of his work testifies to this continuing process. Tim trained as a jeweller and, without formal education in art, his journey as a painter has been made alone. 16

His resulting extraordinary achievements reflect his passion and commitment as much as his natural ability. To get a feel for the essence of Tim’s magical paintings, imagine a timeless place. A place free of boundaries, free of emotional constraint and free of fear. Somewhere where the self peacefully blends with the infinite… of such breathtaking beauty that nothing else matters. The great beauty which Tim creates elevates and delights us. It is his gift to the world. Ph: +64 3 441 2490 www.wilsongallery.co.nz

THE HOUSE THAT EYE BUILT

The House That EYE Built Part One of a Four Issue Series. Building a new home is not a task for the faint-hearted. However with some careful organisation, an ability to seek and accept advice from professionals and the foresight to understand that not everything will go to plan, the result will be a home that is truly where your heart lives.

18

F

rom those who have managed the build of many homes to those who are experiencing their first attempt at house design and construction, every project is different and will always come with its own set of trials and tribulations. Budgeting for what you want without cutting corners can be simple enough but as with most things in life, there will be unexpected costs that you need to be prepared for as well. Choosing the right set of contractors is probably the biggest fear for most people building a new home, as there are many factors that go into what makes a ‘good’ contractor and we all know what could happen if those initial enquiries into a service provider aren’t thorough enough. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you want and if they seem uncooperative at such an early stage of the game, then it probably isn’t a wise idea to move forward. You are spending the money, so you deserve the best quality of service and workmanship, no matter how small or big your budget. Speaking of budgets, one cannot go very far without a visit to the bank to discuss finance, lending and a mortgage. Warren Hammond from BNZ believes that as soon as someone is thinking of building a property, they should get along to BNZ to discuss numbers and get helpful advice that will assist you from start to finish. It is important to organise this before looking at any potential sites, who wants to fall in love with a property and then find out they can’t afford it. Know your budget and how much you can borrow before moving onto the next step and obviously the best place to work all that out is with your bank. The requirements for a house under construction differ to lending against an already established property; therefore discussing budget and estimate figures with a bank such as BNZ is the best place to start. BNZ have special banking consultants to help with the financing of your new home, ensuring that everything is paid for and supporting you every step of the way. Once finance is secured, there really is only one place to start because you can’t even think about building a house until you have a section to put it on. G.J. Gardner Homes help people every day with choosing the right site for their new build and Ellie Porteous, General Manager of Deacon Holdings, New Zealand’s Master Franchisee for G.J. Gardner Homes, explains that selecting a piece of land is a very important part of the process. “What may appear to be a cheap section could turn out to be very expensive and vice versa, depending on site specific matters, which will apply regardless of the home you design or the builder you choose.” Let’s say you have found a site you want to buy? Great! But before signing on the dotted line and transferring the money, it is best to talk to your lawyer to read over the fine print. They can ensure you have dotted all your i’s and crossed all your t’s, as well as advising on any pitfalls that you aren’t covered for. Think about getting a LIM report from your local council as well. It does cost to get one but it will point out any potential faults and unique factors about the site that can’t be seen with the naked eye. After securing a section, next on the list is the design of the house and this starts with a good floor plan which Ellie says is all about thinking how you will be living in the home. Ask yourself how you like to move from one room to the next and you might even consider sketching furniture onto the plans - your office desk for example - as a good way to predict where you’ll need extra power points and know exactly which member of the family is going to be in each room. “All of these things 19

THE HOUSE THAT EYE BUILT

then determine some of your choices in regards to what rooms you place next to each other and also simple things like where you put light switches. We often find it is some of those small things that frustrate customers once their home is built.” Finding the right architect that understands and supports your design dreams is essential in planning your new home. The NZIA website, www. nzia.co.nz , represents more than 90% of registered NZ architects and is a useful source when dealing and planning with your architect. “Great architecture does more than simply meet its brief. It works in relationship with the landscape, enhancing our appreciation of the physical environment it occupies.” (www.nzia.co.nz). Find an architect that will help to clarify what you want, bring vision and creativity into the project, offer not only design skills but also cost analysis, contract management and project supervision and liaise with other professionals on your project site such as surveyors and contractors.

20

After securing a design, the next part of the process is lodging it with your local council. Each council is different but getting a building consent to begin the construction of your new home requires careful organisation to meet all the necessary requirements by law. These include building and resource consents, inspections at set intervals throughout the build and may also include other particulars set out by your local district. As more people are recognising the value in homes with built-in energy efficient systems, real estate prices are reflecting this, imagine being able to add value to your house before it is even built! Planning for insulation and other energy efficiencies must be completed during the design process, and when you move into your new home you can instantly reap the rewards of lower energy bills and a high level of comfort all throughout the year. Not sure where to start? Luckily Right House is just a phone call away. Right House conduct NZBC H1 calculations, energy star ratings (HERS) and sustainability assessments (Green Home Scheme) for your designs and will then work with you to match the technologies, products and systems to your lifestyle and budget. Jason Trotter, a solutions consultant for Right House, says they only recommend leading brands which have been rigorously evaluated by their technical team of building experts. But their service doesn’t end there. “We can project manage the installation and commission, eliminating the need for you to work with multiple suppliers. During the installation of the energy systems, our trade-qualified Right House installers work alongside you and the builder, always applying our extensive quality assurance check.” Ronnie Pocock from Fletcher Aluminium knows that building a new home is one of the most exciting and challenging things you can do in a lifetime but also knows that an often undervalued or under considered product is the windows and doors. When you consider the major role windows and doors play in any home, from indoor-outdoor flow, ventilation, light, safety, security, comfort and aesthetic style, he says there should be no cut corners when it comes to getting the best possible product available. “It may require a bit of extra time but choosing the right windows and doors for your home is worth it. It will help keep the comfort of your home at a healthy and even temperature, maximise your views, improve ventilation and safety and make your place a more enjoyable home to live in.” While choosing interior décor may seem like something that is completed way after the build, the use of rugs could actually play a huge role in the design and layout of your home. Laura Furey is the New Zealand and UAE Manager for Designer Rugs and she says choosing to add a rug to your décor is directly related to your choice of home. “A lot of new build interiors these days involve open plan flooring and a lot of that flooring is made up of wood products or concrete. Because of that people are requiring something that will help

define the areas within those large spaces.” Where walls once were is now often open space so Laura explains that rugs work as an anchor for the furniture and as a divider between each ‘room’, whilst still allowing for a certain amount of flow throughout. But the key is that not just any old rug will do. Laura says that when you’re spending money on something for your floor you want it to last and also be synonymous with your own personal style. Something that many people may not immediately consider when building there new home is a security system. For an experienced and state of the art security management team, look no further than Fortlock Security, specialising in risk management, security and telecommunications solutions. Fortlock can offer the best advice for the protection of your new home, its contents and most of all your family. An expert team of consultants can assess your building plans and the components you need to develop a customised plan especially for your house. Best of all there systems are designed with the future in mind, so any further upgrades or expansions can be made as simply as possible. Landscaping is often a low priority when it comes to a new build but Delma Harrison from Palmers Gardenworld Remuera says that planning your planting shouldn’t be last on the list. She always advises people to work out a budget and initiate preparation for the garden right at the beginning of a new house build. “Landscaping is so important and it

could be what makes or breaks your property because, done properly, it will work with, compliment and add value to your beautiful new home.” It can be a very confusing world for those who wouldn’t know a succulent from a perennial but plants are Palmers business and the best thing is that they offer a totally comprehensive service for whatever your knowledge level and needs. They have professional landscape designers who can work with you on a plan and then Palmers can supply and install or just provide the plants if you are someone that wants to get your hands dirty in the garden. “We also do tree works, block and retaining wall work, lighting and irrigation. We even create original handmade water features on site!”, Delma explains. Putting the finishing touches on a brand new home is definitely one of the best parts and Fisher & Paykel know how important it is to have the perfect kitchen appliances to compliment the carefully planned interior of your home. Along with a common design language, they also have superior ease of use and consideration of ergonomics, so you can feel free to mix and match their appliances to achieve a personalised European-styled look for your kitchen. While the above is by no means exhaustive of everything you need to consider for a new build, it just goes to show that there are many aspects to factor into your plan and design. So take your time, enjoy the process and discover the joy in building your dream home.

THE HOUSE THAT EYE BUILT

Building from the Ground Up

B

uying a section for a new home is like a blank canvas – you can create what you want to suit you and your family’s lifestyle. But not everyone is lucky enough to have an endless budget, so working closely with your bank is going to be a vital part of the process. Warren Hammond, Business Development Manager and Area Manager for BNZ Bay of Plenty, says the best place to start is to have a chat with your bank to discuss estimate figures, because our requirements for a house under construction differ to lending against an established property. “When someone wants to build a new house, we will lend up to eighty percent and try hard to pin down all the costs before work begins. “While some people find the paperwork process quite daunting, I feel that a lot of it really is stuff that any prudent person should check before construction begins.” Once the loan is approved, work can finally begin on your dream home, but don’t worry, you aren’t lumped with a huge sum of money to deal with on your own. BNZ are there to support you to the end, to ensure you get everything you paid for. “We release the money as five or six progress payments. This is for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because you are paying interest, but you are only paying it on the portion you have drawn down, it keeps interest costs as low as possible during the build process. “Also, it means you can hold off final payment until the Code of Compliance is issued from the Council, which could potentially be a ‘bargaining chip’ if contractors need to address some final details on the house.” Financing the building of a house isn’t most people’s area of expertise, so BNZ banking consultants are there to help every step of the way. Warren provides people a step by step outline of how to organise the construction of a house, from getting valuations and building inspections, to requesting that the builder emails their invoice through when a progress payment is due. “This means I can follow up with my client and discuss what stage

22

they are at, if they are having any issues and how we can resolve them now rather than waiting until the end.” Building a home is a lengthy process, from the section purchase to moving in, so a lot of communication will be required between you and your bank. “I would say to come in as soon as you think of building. We can talk numbers, point out the common traps people can fall into when building, and offer knowledgeable advice throughout the whole process.” www.bnz.co.nz 0800 275 269

Tips for building a house: • Engage a solicitor to help you with the fine print before signing on any dotted line. • Set aside some time. The paperwork with the bank is thorough, but it is the best way to ensure you dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s. • As you pay interest only on the portion of the loan you are using, near completion cash flow can be tight because there is more money you are paying interest on. Have some money tucked away for this period. • When a builder gives you a fixed price offer for construction, make sure you understand what it does and doesn’t include. There may be extras that need to be budgeted for. • If you are going to be building on an undeveloped site, understand all the costs that could be involved with this. Earthworks, drainage and engineering reports could all be extras not originally factored into the building budget. This article is intended as a general discussion only. How to be SOLD on a section A piece of art is nothing without a blank canvas to begin with and this is much like the process of building a new home; the right section has to be found first.

Ellie Porteous is the General Manager of Deacon Holdings, New Zealand’s Master Franchisee for G.J. Gardner Homes. Ellie says that not all sections are created equal and that site specific matters will apply regardless of the home you design or the builder you choose. She explains that three components need to be considered for a new build and the first one has everything to do with the section you choose.

“Site specific costs include the purchase price of the land, the cost of earthworks and retaining walls to create a building platform, bringing power, phone and water to the house and the cost of provision for connection points to public storm water and sewer lines. Additional building costs can occur if your site is located in a very high wind zone, sea spray zone or where there are expansive clays or adverse soil conditions.” So here are a few things Ellie suggests as a preliminary checklist: • Be sure to obtain a Land Information Memorandum (LIM) and Certificate of Title including a survey plan as these will provide important details regarding the section. • It is important to check that all boundary pegs shown on the survey plan are in place. • Arrange for a contour plan so the necessary earthworks can be accurately assessed. • You will need to consider how easily the site can be accessed during the building process. • The location, depth and diameter of all existing storm water and sewer lines need to be determined. By no means an exhaustive list, this is only a selection of some of the issues you will need to consider when purchasing a vacant section says Ellie. But if it all sounds like too much of a headache, G.J. Gardner are there to assist with the whole process of a new home build, from original concept, to the design and construction. Better Living with Fletcher

W

hen it comes to a new house build many people may just assume that any window or door will do but in fact careful consideration of these aspects can be the difference between a house that fully complements the owners lifestyle and one that doesn’t. And this is where Fletcher Aluminium comes in. Ronnie Pocock is the Marketing Manager for Fletcher Aluminium and says that the windows and doors marketplace is actually extremely competitive and because of this Fletcher Aluminium place a lot of importance on staying ahead in terms of innovation and new technology.

“We have always considered ourselves to be leaders and innovators in this area, as our trusted window and door brands were the first to develop a lot of the systems that are now commonplace in New Zealand.” “Our brands introduced light weight aluminium joinery to the New Zealand market over 50 years ago, in fact the well known name ‘Ranchslider’ used by hundreds of thousands of Kiwi’s every day was coined by us. And in 2003, we developed yet another innovative solution, the Foldback® Bifold door, that is still largely unrivalled by our competition.” Fletcher Aluminium is part of the Fletcher Building group of companies and it designs, develops, fabricates and extrudes premium aluminium. The company through its four retail brands; Fisher®, Rylock®, Nebulite® and Vistalite® supplies windows and doors to both 26

the building trade and individual homeowners. And it is the development of new technology which has helped Fletcher Aluminium take their products to a new level and enabled them to offer a range of window and door suites, designed to accommodate any kind of build, from a classic three bedroom home to a glass box house on a cliff top, through to a chalet on a snow covered mountain. “We have products that can perform a lot better, windows and doors are now able to be so much bigger than they have ever been. Also advancements in glass and joinery, like thermally broken frames, low-emissivity

glass along with passive ventilation systems, means not only will your windows be practical and functional they will provide an increased level of health and comfort. We also have products like the Eurostacker® and Euroslider® which provide better weather performance, are low maintenance and easy to operate.” There are many window and door suppliers out there, from timber to steel, PVC and other aluminium window providers but Fletcher Aluminium differentiates itself by offering a range of suites that can be seamlessly mixed and matched providing aesthetic style, performance and economic

competitiveness. “We have a range of products and suites from standard residential or thermal efficiency through to high end architectural,” says Ronnie “Our aim is to work with the homeowner, builder, architect or designer to ensure the right window solution is selected. We are able to make informed recommendations on what products, suite or suites will suit.” And it helps that their people are passionate about windows and doors. “To us it is more than just a hole in the wall. We see the function of windows and doors as products that can create better living whether that be letting in more light, creating indoor/outdoor flow, highlighting social spaces, security, ventilation or practicality; the list really goes on,” says Ronnie. Do it Right. Do it the Right House Way There are so many reasons to build a house the Right House way that not using their energy efficiency solutions would be a step in the wrong direction.

B

ut who is Right House? A subsidiary of Mark Group, purchased by them in September 2011, they provide a nationwide service, specialising in all aspects of energy in homes which includes energy efficient design, insulation, heating, cooling, water heating, appliances and even renewable energy generation. The reason for starting up Right House was simple. As the number of energy related technologies, products and brands is immense and increasing by the day, it means there are often issues of quality control, code compliance, energy security, rating schemes and many more aspects. And because of this, Right House understands that working out the best solution for a particular design can be challenging and time consuming, so they are happy to take the lead in offering a simple solution to this challenge. “We are a one stop shop, providing a complete design, specification, installation and after sales service. The Right House energy design process seeks to optimise the thermal performance of the whole house as well as helping to lower energy costs. “A new home with a full Right House solution can look forward to a reduction of up to 50% in energy use.” Using the ‘Right House Daisy’ there are four parts to the process for creating an integrated solution and they can all complement the architectural design process. Aspect: If involved early in the design process, Right House can work with you to optimise the energy values of a site; taking into account solar gain, site specific wind directions for natural cooling, local and regional climate etc. Design: Small design features can significantly improve comfort and energy use. Good roof orientation and slope will maximise the performance of solar heating and because there are always several different options to achieve good energy performance, these features will fit seamlessly into your design vision. Passive Systems: Passive systems are built into the house, so getting it right at the design stage is critical. There are a myriad of options for insulating floors, wall and ceilings and new sophisticated glazing types avoid overheating and reduce heat losses. Active systems: These are products and systems which the home

occupant actively controls which include heating, cooling, ventilation, water heating, lighting, appliances, renewable energy, technologies and others. With comfort all year round, Right House solutions perform. A home with a full Right House solution, verified with a HERS and sustainability rating, will reduce you and your family’s carbon footprint and be truly sustainable, now and for your children and future generations to come; all while delivering room temperatures between 18-24 degrees Celsius 355 days of the year. And who wouldn’t want to own the healthiest home possible that is dry and warm, without damp and mould, all while doing your bit for the planet. www.righthouse.co.nz Ph: 0800 744 489 29

Tips When Building Your Dream Home

1. When choosing the new site to build your home on don’t forget to consider options like proximity to schools, shopping and transport, as well as potential viewpoints and even landscape issues. Also be sure to do a soil test to ensure the soil is buildable. 2. Get to know your builder. Ask friends and families for recommendations so you can be sure to get a builder with a good reputation. You want a builder who is prompt, produces quality work, is cooperative and most of all understands your intentions. 3. To help keep within you budget, make the following list of the Features for your new home. • Must Have • Would like to have • Items you can do without 4. Go through different plan books, builder’s websites and even friends homes to get ideas to help make your perfect design plan. Interior designers and decoraters can be expensive, so try to find ideas for 30

your home and copy or reinvent these into your home yourself. 5. As well as keeping an eye on your budget you must watch the progress of all areas of construction and planning, check for delays to ensure you are keeping within any time constraints. 6. No matter how efficient your builders are or how smoothly everything is going to plan, things like council matters or even bad weather can put a delay in construction so make sure you have temporary housing set up and aren’t going to be left homeless if it isn’t completed on time. 7. On the final completion of your new home, do a through walk through of the entire household to ensure that everything has been completed as you wanted it and that everything is in working order. 8. Most of all, don’t panic...building your own home can be a stressful yet rewarding experience. However using the complete services of someone like GJ Gardener can greatly reduce your stress levels.

Stay Safe with Fortlock Security

F

eeling safe in your own home should be the given right of every New Zealander. Unfortunately, in today’s society, burglary is an all too common fact of life and it can be one of the most intrusive crimes, with lasting impacts on it’s victims, not to mention the expense and inconvenience which generally goes along with it. Understanding how to prevent and deter burglars is the best way to save yourself from becoming another “burglary” statistic. Electronic Security Systems are an important investment in the protection of your home/business and family. Studies reveal that it is far less likely that you will become the victim of a burglary if you have a correctly fitted and well maintained burglar alarm. In addition to having an alarm it is also a good idea to have it monitored with a trusted company so you can ensure when you are away that you are aware of activations in your home/ business and then have the power to decide what steps to take. You may also be eligible for a discount on your home insurance premium if you have a monitored alarm system installed within your home. Patrol response is also highly recommended for high risk properties with many valuables, this will let the owner know what has happened to your property upon an activation, providing you with piece of mind. Fortlock Security are market leaders in the Security Industry, serving both the residential and commercial markets for over 25 years. Fortlock can work with you to assess and engineer the most cost effective solution to meet your budget, whilst taking all necessary steps to ensure we mitigate any risks to your home or business. They then manage and deliver this solution with minimal disruption to the owner/ occupier. In addition to the electronic security systems, here are some useful tips to enhancing the security of your premises.

34

1. Get to know your neighbours. Your neighbours are often the first ones to notice when something doesn’t “look right” at your home. 2. It’s important to use a high quality deadbolt lock on your doors and to use an additional blocking device on sliding glass doors. Windows are often much less attended to than doors, so check them throughout your home routinely. 4. Install flood lights or sensor lights on the exterior of the home. Burglars are far less likely to enter a well-lit residence. 5. Keep a well-manicured lawn. This can emphasize that you pay close attention to your home, whereas an overgrown lawn can suggest vacancy to a possible burglar. 6. When travelling, make sure you have someone checking on the house, collecting your mail and newspapers; a pile of papers on the driveway is a tell-tale sign that your family is away. 7. Keep all doors and windows locked even when you’re at home and never hide keys to your home outside. 8. If you have an alarm system, make sure all household members are trained properly in working the alarm and use it daily. Post stickers on the exterior of the home and have a yard sign indicating your alarm service, helping to discourage possible intruders. 9. Have smoke detectors wired into your alarm system. Place them on each level of your home. A monitored smoke detector will notify you and the fire brigade if they are activated. 10. To insure that your alarm will not be disabled if your phone line is cut or compromised, a GSM or GPRS unit can be installed as a backup to your alarm system, to ensure that it continues to communicate. Rug Up New Zealand Manager for Designer Rugs, Laura Furey offers some insightful tips for selecting the perfect rug for your new home. • Narrow your options, what kind of space are you trying to create; are you making a statement or working harmoniously within the space. • Look at your lounge suite, if your couch has feet, measure the rug approximately 300cm in from the underside; this will still anchor your furniture within the space, saving on cost. However, if your couch is to the floor then allow 300cm between the rug and the couch, that way they won’t compete for dominance in the space. • When measuring a dining space allow at least 700cm from the edge of your table to compensate for your chairs. This allows chairs to be pulled back and still be comfortably within the defines of your rug, you wouldn’t want your guests falling off! • Quality & benefits before price! Buy NZ wool, there is a lot of talk about synthetics but will they last and can it compete with the harshness of our NZ sun? At the end of the day NZ Wool is much more durable and in this climate you want assurance, knowing you have made a good investment. NZ Wool is renowned as one of the most durable wools in the world. It’s a very fine yarn which means

“Create artwork for your floor that compliments the space.”

• •

a much tighter and heavier weave; Translation; the finer the yarn, tighter the weave, better the longevity. Handtufted NZ Wool rugs can be textured, carved and layered to fashion any style. Add a touch of Silk or Viscose to give extra lustre to your design. Larger spaces can facilitate a brighter and bolder design. Light to mid tone colours will give the impression of opening up the space; let there be light. Open planning means rugs are now defining spaces where walls once were. This has given more freedom to patterns and boldness of colour, segregated areas can now be defined by individual rugs, anchoring the furniture whilst still maintaining an open flow between areas. Lots of glass means less wall space, fashioning a statement is no longer reserved for that particular painting on your wall. Use the same artist and craft it to your floor instead. More use of raw materials in modern architecture is what we’re seeing to date. Concrete, wooden flooring and stone are becoming popular finishes; therefore reducing acoustics and the need to soften these areas creating a more comfortable environment is required. Rugs can provide the filter and you can’t go past the visual aesthetics they create! “Everything in the space relates”, symmetry is the key to any long lasting design. If you’re not sure, ask. Designer Rugs have the knowledge and want your final decision to be well informed, we like happy endings!

There were friendly, very knowledgeable, with many helpful suggestions and also listened to what we were looking for and within a few days produced a detailed plan and quote for us to review. It Pays to do Your (Emotional) Housework Before Selling Your Home

Rosh Daji - Residential Real Estate

James Lee - Commercial Real Estate

T

o fully prepare yourself before putting your property on the market, ask yourself two questions: • “Why do I want to sell my home”? • And the next question has to be, “How am I going to get the best result?” They appear such obvious questions, but they’re ones that must be examined extensively and with a clear head before you even think of listing your property or as Lewis Carroll said: “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The 24 commercial and residential sales and leasing agents working at Harcourt’s Parnell office make up a team who have built up the agency on three key strategies: professional marketing, reliable communication and skilled sales negotiation; all with the aim of achieving their clients priority – Result Excellence. Directors James Lee and Rosh Daji brought with them a proven and impressive background in real estate in New Zealand over many years. Jame’s philosophy of finding the right combination of talent, personality, knowledge and the ability to work together has made his team unbeatable. His rationale that “it costs no more to hire the best” has proven to be a smart move. Spend 20 minutes with Rosh Daji and any anxiety about how to best prepare for one of life’s biggest decisions slips away. Instead, one is left feeling energized, enthusiastic and ready for the challenge. It’s a feeling of being forewarned is definitely forearmed. Obtaining up to date information and doing your homework on how you are going to achieve the best result when selling your home is essential. The reason of WHY you are selling is more vital. Those who think they’ll “give it a go”, who have no particular motivation (or timetable) and are just testing the water to see if there’s a big fish out there ready to bite, run the very real risk of not only wasting their time and money but jeopardizing the future value of their property. Simply put, stuff it up now and you may never get the chance to fix it. Back to your homework: Identify your reason(s) to sell. It might be inevitable due to divorce, a necessary down-scaling or a death in the family. Or it might be a life change, family growing or shrinking, a move due to work, a desire for a different type of property. Whatever it is, be very clear why you want to sell.

42

Ask your agent for other listings in your area and take a drive by them. Think carefully about what the asking price is for these properties, what has sold at what price and how the property compares to yours. Does your idea of an asking price tally with comparable properties sold? For results in real estate, call in and meet this professional group of live-wire commercial sales and leasing specialists, business brokers, high-performing residential sales consultants and property managers. Planning is everything so let the Harcourt team guide you as you prepare to sell. They will guide you through the process from first thoughts of selling to achieving the very best result. Your emotional well-being and financial success couldn’t be in better hands. Ph: +64 9 304 1270 www.harcourts.co.nz

Introducing Heather Walton and Ricky Cave

H

eather Walton, Ricky Cave and their executive personal assistant Angela Kelland Bridges (all qualified Real Estate Sales Personnel) collectively have over 25 years of New Zealand Property experience. In today’s day and age we don’t believe it is acceptable as a Real Estate Salesperson to simply rely on print media then sit and wait for buyers to come through the open home door. With the technology available to us and in these social media times we now live in, a Salesperson must be able to offer vendors an initial phase of bringing qualified current buyers to their home. A good salesperson will have an up to date database of current buyers in the market. This is great for several reasons, firstly to obtain immediate market feedback and secondly to sell off market in the first week if at all possible. This is our commitment and aim for our vendors, however advertising and auction is often required to create the competition to achieve the best possible price for our vendors. The band is an enigmatic duo comprised of Californiato-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White. With flavours of blues, folk, Americana, country and classic singer-songwriter their sound is firmly rooted in the gothic American South. 4. Heaven – Rebecca Ferguson

Books provided for review courtesy of Hachette New Zealand

If pop music is infinitely surprising then the often circuitous route that brings a major star to our attention is surely exemplified in the wonderful Rebecca Ferguson. With a writing skill that belies her years, Rebecca Ferguson’s debut album does not pander to fashion. It’s not a hybrid of every current hip musical genre, shaken around a bit and mixed into an amorphous lump. This is soul; raw emotion pours out of every fibre of every note making the others sound ordinary. Her debut album “Heaven” was released December 5th 2011.

The Witness

The Good Father

The Lifeboat

by Nora Roberts

by Noah Hawley

by Charlotte Rogan

Elizabeth Fitch, a sixteen-year-old teenager, witnesses a mob shooting. She goes into witness protection, but then the agents guarding her are killed and she is forced to go on the run. The story picks up 15 years later... This is vintage Nora Roberts at her the best. Perfect escapism and suspense. Karen McMillan

Dr Paul Allen is a highly respected doctor whose eldest son Danny is accused of assassinating a Presidential candidate. As the clock ticks down towards an execution, Dr Allen retraces his son’s steps, trying to unravel what happened, and more importantly, why? This is a compelling and compassionate book that explores themes that will stimulate conversation. Karen McMillan

This is the story of a group of shipwreck survivors adrift in a lifeboat in 1914. A claustrophobic story of survival, the action moves between the courtroom where Grace and several other survivors are on trial for their lives, and the events inside the lifeboat – where sacrifices have to be made for the greater good. Mesmerizing! Karen McMillan

No Longer a Secret in the City ‘If you’ve got something good why be quiet about it?’ Andy Tan, General Manager, Auckland City Hotel

A

few issues ago we let out secret and many travellers quickly took advantage of our slip. We spoke of a hotel that was collecting awards for outstanding service and implementing forward-thinking environmental policies. Consistently recognised for its convenience, personalised service and value, Auckland City Hotel is a firm favourite for corporate and business travellers. As you would expect from a hotel known for its exceptional guest service support, ACH offers special corporate benefits such as complimentary broadband and wireless Internet. However, there is even more on offer to make a business trip or vacation pass more enjoyably. Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere, aided by the eco-friendly environment combine to create a home away from home for its guests. Interestingly, the comfortable beds and pillows are frequent comments recorded on guest review cards. As is location. Situated on Hobson Street, one of the main arterial motorway access routes, close to the Sky Tower and the new and exciting bars, cafes, restaurants and shops of Wynyard Wharf and Britomart Transport Centre as well as the CBD and

designer shopping precincts, has made the hotel a return destination for high-profile guests, foreign diplomats and ambassadors. As every business owner knows, reputation and return custom create a brand and Andy Tan has built one of the best marketing tools available – word of mouth. Guests return to ACH and pass on the ‘secret’. As Hamish Small, General Manager of The Professional Bar & Restaurant School says, ‘as a regular guest at the Auckland City Hotel, I have no hesitation in recommending the accommodation, facilities, service and friendly staff. Attentive, empathetic service is not always common these days, and when living away from home on a regular basis, I always look forward to staying at the ACH due to the high standards I receive from the team on Hobson St.’ Already popular with national and international sports teams, in March ACH will proudly greet and host members of the Volvo Ocean Racing teams through its historic and grand doors. In our next issue, we will meet the team! So, were we right to let out our secret? We think so. Auckland City Hotel is the place to be. Ph: 09 9250701 www.achhobson.co.nz

Ruth wanted to create a store that was filled to the brim with treasures from all over the globe. The Creative Personality behind Museum Art Hotel

M

useum Art Hotel, in the hub of Wellington City, has an outstanding reputation as one of the most exquisite places to visit, stay and dine in. Yahoo has listed the hotel as one of the top 10 art hotels with magnificent artwork of the world, further complementing and enforcing Museum Hotel’s prestigious reputation. Chris Parkin is the proud and eccentric owner of this luxury boutique hotel. It was Chris’s idea to save the building with a historic move across the road in 1993, keeping the hotel in business and thus becoming the largest building ever relocated in New Zealand. Located on the third floor of Museum hotel, the equally popular and exquisite French style restaurant and cocktail bar, Hippopotamus, only adds more to the reputation for its fine dining and excellent service. Eye Magazine caught up with Chris to discover more about his

48

interesting character, living in the artistic capital city and how his style influences the hotel. What do you love most about your hotel? I love its personality and homely atmosphere but above all its distinctiveness. I want my guests to feel as if they are in my home, enjoying my hospitality amidst the theatrical and artistic surroundings. I want my guests to enjoy the friendliness and style of my reception team, dressed in their individually designed Alexander Owen outfits or the accents of my mainly French Restaurant team. Who is your favourite artist? Salvador Dali I think but given a minute I could change my mind! Historically I’ve always fancied the Breughel’s and Bosch (Hieronymus that is). Locally my favorite is Bill Hammond.

Who is your favourite clothing designer? Kenzo. (I’m not courageous enough to say Versace.) How do you pick the art pieces that are to go on display in the hotel? Whim. See it, like it, buy it, (provided I can afford it). I trust my judgement. I don’t trust the judgement of experts or dealers. How does your own personal style influence the atmosphere and décor? Totally. I want the hotel to reflect my personality. I want my guests to feel they are being accommodated by someone who cares about their surroundings. At the same time I want to provoke a sense of curiosity about me. Do I really live life the way it seems? Yes I do!

Where are your preferred places to dine in Wellington? So many good ones, it’s hard to pick. Lunches at Boulcott Bistro, Arbitrageur and Capitol. Evenings would be Ambelli, Ancestral, Bosleys, Logan Brown and of course the world famous Hippopotamus! What do you think of cycling around the city and do you own a bike? I love biking around the city. I have six bikes to choose from. The smallest is a 650cc trail bike, ranging up to a 300km per hour MV Agusta Tamburini sports bike. I don’t own anything with pedals!

Life Gets Better at The Narrows Landing Having managed some of the top establishments in the world, a recently arrived couple are steering a boutique hotel along an exciting new path.

J

ohann F Angerbauer has a wealth of experience under his belt. With close to 30 years in the industry, he has worked and travelled all over the world. Johann started his stellar career by gaining business management qualifications in Austria. His first posting was in Gambia, West Africa. When Johann met Hawke’s Bay-born Shirley at the Tourist Hotel Corporation establishment in Rotorua, he had just come from a lengthy stint cruising from Alaska to the Bahamas with the Cunard Line.

50

Johann then became Food and Beverage manager of the Lido Holiday Inn, Beijing. Known as the “City Within A City”, the hotel had 1020 rooms and 2200 employees. Johann was in charge of 800 staff and 21 points-of-sale. Several years later, Johann became General Manager of a five star Hilton property in Port Sudan. “We signed up for three and a half tough years.” The top class hotel was a man-made oasis. Water was sourced from a nearby mountain range and everything ran on generator power.

After spending the past three-and-a-half years in Shanghai, the couple have now found themselves just outside of Hamilton, in the Waikato. Together they have taken the helm of The Narrows Landing boutique hotel. Built in 1996, the hotel was a forerunner in sustainable construction, using recycled and natural materials. Only the bare minimum of flora was removed for the build. A blend of rustic chic and classic design, The Narrows Landing sits surrounded by magnificent trees, lawns and gardens. The Angerbauers have put together new menus and an impressive looking wine cellar. Open early for walk-in breakfasts, they remain open through to lunch, which begins at 11.30am. Dinner begins at 6pm. Johann explains that the casual culture of New Zealand makes it hard to describe how they fit in the market. “I like to think of it as fine dining but if you call it that it sounds really expensive. When really, price-wise it’s on a level with most restaurants in the city. The Narrows Landing is much more than just a restaurant. The hotel boasts 16 beautiful guest rooms with a stand-alone cottage and a luxury three-bedroom apartment fitted out with the very best tap and white-ware. Stop in at Grey Lynn

Grey Lynn Farmers Market

W

WALK THROUGH THE DOOR TO BE GREETED BY A VISUAL FEAST!

Dear Reader is a ‘must’ when exploring the many delights of West Lynn’s Richmond Road well-known fashion shops and cafes.

52

ith an eclectic vibe and friendly neighbourhood, Grey Lynn is a destination with plenty to see and do. There is something for everyone and it is the perfect place for a weekend outing with the family, coffee date with friends or for a lazy Sunday stroll. The suburb of Grey Lynn is home to numerous stores and cafes, with many along the stretch of Richmond Road. There is everything from bookstores and homeware to cafes and restaurants. These include the likes of the Dear Reader Bookstore and the popular eatery - Ripe Delicatessen, to name a few. A particularly popular attraction is the Grey Lynn Farmers Market which runs from 9am to 12.30pm every Sunday - except the last Sunday of the month - at Grey Lynn Community Centre. As a community, the Grey Lynn residents make sure visitors to the markets enjoy a vibrant experience and that all the products that are showcased and are for sale, whether it be a book or a baked cupcake, are 100% fresh, 100% local and 100% New Zealand made.

Dear Reader… Tucked into the arty bustle of Grey Lynn, a small bookstore has established itself as one of Auckland’s favourite browsing destinations.

F

or book lovers, walking into Dear Reader is like walking into a gigantic box of chocolates. A delicious papery smell permeates the premises. Beautiful books lie in gleaming mounds on the eclectic mix of distressed tables, dressers and designer shelving. As an independent bookstore, Dear Reader is able to tempt all who enter with a range of titles handpicked by owners Helen Drummond and Tom Beran. Their independence means that, unlike large chain stores, they can personally respond to their readers’ needs and wants. Browsers can pleasurably waver between contemporary fiction, older works, nonfiction and children’s books. Titles range from literary heavyweights to easy reads. Helen and Tom are strong supporters of New Zealand publishing. However, one genre you won’t find among the carefully chosen stock is the marshmallow-light romance. “There are just so many books on so many interesting subjects”, Helen explains. Helen herself likes beautiful, tactile books – books as paper objects that feel, and look, lovely. She mentions that one of the effects of the huge online market is a new focus on

gorgeous, eye-catching covers. Helen’s love of the beautiful extends to a small collection of journals, unusual cards and other “book-y things”. Dear Reader has an online presence – mostly used by people overseas buying gifts for loved ones in NZ – but what makes the 436 Richmond Road shop special is its ambience, with lampshades pooling light,

comfortable couches and Persian rugs; and the way Helen and Tom have arranged the mix of topics and titles. Unlike online shopping, where buyers need some idea of what they are looking for, Dear Reader invites a leisurely wander off the beaten track. Ph: +64 9 360 0383 www.dearreader.co.nz

Antoine’s Restaurant As a fifteen year old, Tony Astle decided to leave Christchurch and follow his dreams. At the time he loved the restaurant and entertainment industry and fortunately to this day he still does.

Pork fillet, oven roasted and served with pig’s trotter spring roll, caramelized apple and a spiced port jus

T

ony and Beth opened Antoine’s in 1973 when Tony was just 23 years old. His aim was to make it his life’s work and also to teach young chefs; not only about food but the Astle concept of a restaurant including knowledge of wine and service. “Antoine’s is an example of how a restaurant can stand the test of time through all sorts of adversity. So many restaurants open with a hoopla and often food writers, depending on their experience, give them huge accolades,” says Tony. “However, these restaurants can and do seem to, disappear after two to five years.” Tony’s secret? That owner-operators are usually the successful ones.

66

Everything about Antoine’s is stamped with Tony’s personal touch. He is there every day the restaurant is open and will only employ waiters who are able to make his customers feel special – consistently. His waiters are people who take pride in their jobs. When dining in Antoine’s, it’s a bit like going to Tony and Beth’s home. The décor is demure and tasteful with attention to detail, the tables covered in white linen tablecloths and napkins, silver settings and classy glassware. From ringing the doorbell to enter the restaurant, to the personal service from well-informed waiters (knowledgeable in both food and wine), the whole experience is memorable. “We are the only silver service restaurant left

Italian mozzarella with house cured salmon and beef, tataki of tuna, pickled radish and red vinegar caramel

and intend to maintain that style of service. Casual formality is very important,” says Tony. With Antoine’s 40 th anniversary next year, plans are underway for a gala celebration to be attended by the who’s who of Auckland and beyond. They’re drawing up the guest list already and as with the 30 th and 35th Anniversary Celebration dinners, the entertainment, food and drinks will be lavish with all proceeds going to a child focussed charity. Tony keeps the menu modern but has also created a separate ‘Nostalgia menu’ with dishes that are particular to Antoine’s and have stood the test of time, 39 years to be precise. “Of course these Nostalgia items have been updated to modern-day presentation. Items such as offal, duck, oxtail and onion soup are available as well as the seafood chowder and designer bread and butter pudding which have been on the menu

since we opened the doors,” says Tony. In the 1970’s food was pretty basic with a lot of meat and two vegetables but they are now very international with a heavy leaning to Pacific Basin and Asian flavours. Antoine’s also dabble in sous vide and a little molecular but will not go all the way down that track. Simple food, fresh produce and letting the product speak for itself are key characteristics of the Antoine’s menu. When he’s not busy at the helm of the most established fine dining establishment in New Zealand, Tony is out looking for suitable premises for his next adventure; an international cooking and waiting school in Auckland, a venture for which he certainly has the best credentials possible. With takeaways also available, customers will not be disappointed! A Queenstown icon – The Cow is a not a place to be missed. Eye Magazine spoke with Malcolm Price 68

owner of both restaurant locations to find out more about the success behind this fantastic institution. Can you tell us more about the history of the name ‘The Cow’? The Cow Restaurant in Queenstown is situated in an old cow milking shed built in the 1860’s, which is located in the aptly named Cow Lane. Your menu has obviously proven very successful, why have you chosen to keep the menu the same since opening? Honestly, why change a winning formula. The Cow is situated in a barn, what is it like having a restaurant in there and how does this add to the atmosphere? Atmosphere is everything and The Cow has all of that. The fire blazing and reflecting onto the historic stone walls of the barn, leads to a cozy ‘I don’t want to leave’ feeling. The unique interior also adds to the friendly and warm atmosphere, why do you think sustaining this décor is important to your reputation? Our customers come to The Cow not only for the fabulous food but also for the atmosphere and this will never change. Imagine if we ripped out the fire and wall paper the walls… No I don’t think so! Why do you think The Cow restaurants have proven so popular with both locals and tourists? Simply put, with over 30 years of trading and not changing either the menu or the décor, our customers appreciate the consistency. Do you have any futures plans to expand and open a third restaurant? Yes just quietly we would love to open a store in the North Island.

Enjoy Ritzling

R

itzling is the first innovative beverage from the wine industry that has captured the hearts of many. Ritzling is a carbonated Riesling in a very trendy 250ml bottle that has taken the market by storm. Created by winemaker Chris Archer as a beverage to entice people to have fun with wine he says, “I felt the current wine industry marketing has distanced the consumer, wine is fun, it is natural and I wanted to dress the wine in a way that reflects what’s on the inside. The beautiful baroque imagery sings of escapism and purity of flavour which only 100% New Zealand Riesling can deliver”. Packaged in elegant 250ml bottles, this drink is designed to ‘go party’. Chris urges imbibers to slice up a lemon or lime and pop it in the bottle for extra zest. This gorgeous drink has been in short supply as those in the know have monopolised the sales from key outlets. It has a loyal following from consumers, evident from the comments on the Ritzling Facebook page. “It is unusual for a wine to develop such an interaction between the producer and the consumer. I have been in the wine industry for over 20 years and haven’t seen anything like it. It’s so great to get the feedback, I love it!” says Chris. Ritzling is a serious wine. Riesling was chosen as he says the variety has a sturdy structure, intense fruit expression in a savoury sense and has the versatility and mouth weight to carry bubbles. Ritzling is cheeky and irreverent, so grab a Ritzling and join your friends in a toast to an exciting 2012. Ritzling is destined to be heading overseas this year so jump on to the Facebook or www.ritzling.com and enjoy the journey. 72

60 Seconds with a Celeb Nadia Lim Highlight of 2011? Completing my cookbook, Nadia’s Kitchen Any New Years resolutions and how are you going with them? One is to celebrate things more often, birthdays, achievements, even the little things. It’s going well; I’m drinking a lot more wine this year. Another was to approach things fearlessly; I got off to a good start on that one climbing Mount. Tongariro (Mordor in Lord of the Rings) on New Year’s Day in 60kph winds, torrential rain and thunder, in the dark, it was great. Who do you regard as your role model? Food wise - at age 12 Jamie (Oliver) was my biggest inspiration. Ray McVinnie’s words about food are always very wise, I’ve found his advice very useful. Character wise - my Dad for his loyalty, pride and compassion. What has been the best part about winning MasterChef New Zealand? Getting to meet some amazing, very talented, very wise and very kind people who want to be part of the journey too. Has being in the kitchen always been a great love of yours? What age did you start cooking? Absolutely! My family all LOVE food and I’ve grown up eating a huge variety of different ethnic foods, there’s nothing we won’t try. I’ve loved being in the kitchen since I was knee high, but I became a serious cook age 12 after I decided I wanted to write a cookbook and have a cooking show called Food in the Nude where the food (not me!) was in the nude, i.e. delicious without having to be dressed up in fancy packages and additives. Does your heritage influence your cooking style? Yes, definitely. I grew up in Malaysia for 7 years, the food is a mix of Indian, Chinese, Malay and even Portugese. I’m familiar with a lot of those flavours and I incorporate hints of it in my cooking. I love lots of Mediterranean, Pacific and Middle Eastern flavours too.

74

What is your favourite dish to cook? That’s such an impossible question to answer! Hmmmm...at the moment I’m enjoying throwing together my Pineapple with Basil Lim Sugar (recipe in my cookbook Nadia’s Kitchen) for dessert when we have guests over (it takes 5 minutes to prepare and gets rave reviews – a winner!) If you had to choose an alternative career, what would it be? An Ecologist – the dynamic balance and interaction between nature and humans fascinates me, and (unfortunately) I think the scales are tipping unfavourably at the moment. What are your plans and projects for 2012? The first half of 2012 will see Nadia’s Kitchen be released (in stores 5th April), a book launch and country tour to follow. I’m really looking forward to visiting lots of towns around NZ and exploring more of our awesome country. Also the launch of my new website www.nadialim.com with heaps more recipes and bits and pieces. I’m hoping to get a children’s type 1 diabetes cooking/ education class going, I was a diabetes specialist dietitian before too. If you were Prime Minister for the day, what would be the first thing you would change? Make cooking and budgeting skills classes mandatory in the school curriculum. If kids become competent cooks now, can you imagine how much better their health will be in 30 years time? They won’t have to rely on processed crap and fast food. It would save our health bill heaps, guaranteed! I know this

as I’ve seen it first hand working for the health board in diabetes for three years. The biggest problem/barrier to eating well is not having the skills/knowledge to shop and cook. What TV show can’t you miss? I can go without watching TV quite easily. Favourite Quote/Best advice you have been given? Instead of thinking of how you can become successful, think of how you can help others and you will find success through that. For all those keen kiwi foodies out there what is the easiest healthy dish to whip up? Try what I had for breakfast this morning. Toast some slices of sourdough bread brushed with olive oil in the oven, top with chopped tomatoes, basil, a crumbling of feta and a squeeze of lemon. Beats dry cardboard cereal any day! Nadia Lim’s Recipe Book ‘Nadia’s Kitchen’ will be released in stores 5th April www.nadialim.com

Food for Thought

A

s the days of summer fade and the nights grow longer, Bowmans Restaurant in Mt Eden has a new autumn menu to make the looming winter bearable. Bowmans opened over 15 years ago and has enjoyed becoming a part of the Mt Eden Village community. And just like all relationships Bowmans and Mt Eden have always been about give and take. “We really like supporting our local community because they have been such great customers over the years,” says Carlos, owner of Bowmans. “Mt Eden is such a great suburb only 10 minutes from downtown. We have the benefit of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, there is always free and easy parking close by and a lovely village atmosphere.” What better way is there to spend a cold evening with friends, while having the pleasure of eating an array of Bowmans carefully selected gourmet food? The answer? Practically nothing. “We offer the degustation experience, which is like a six course tour through what we offer on our menu. Our customers say this is a fantastic way to be able to try different dishes in smaller portion sizes,” says Carlos. Offering the freshest of ingredients sometimes means a change in menu due to availability, but serving as much local produce as possible is important to Carlos and team and they are proud of what they have achieved. “We really enjoy being able to offer an inner city style food experience in Mt Eden, which we see as such a fantastic part of what Auckland is all about.” During the day, customers can enjoy their other venture, ‘Next Door Café’ which is no longer next door having recently moved into the same premises as Bowmans, now offering a cosier and more comfortable atmosphere with outdoor seating. For larger groups, Bowmans have two fabulous private dining rooms that are available and can cater to suit every event.

Dining at its Best When going from “strength to strength” means just that…

O

ne of Christchurch’s most loved Japanese restaurants relocated to Newmarket, Auckland in October last year. Owners Koichi and Yoko had no choice but to leave the red zone following the February earthquake, but have brought to Auckland not only their superb cuisine, but their spirit as well. Tatsumi’s style of Japanese dining is European-inspired, based on Koichi’s 17 years of experience as a chef in Japan and in New Zealand. He worked his magic in renowned locations such as Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Remarkable Lodge in Queenstown and The George Hotel in Christchurch, before opening his own restaurant with partner Yoko. Koichi’s most popular dish, teriyaki salmon with crispy skin, is sensational, accompanied by a unique wasabi-flavoured mashed potato. Unlike other Japanese restaurants, clients are encouraged to experience their dishes in a three-course “prix fixe” menu or a sixcourse degustation menu. An example of their original style desserts is the warm and melting fondant; a green-tea based served with vanilla bean ice cream. Along with the dinner menu, you can also experience Tatsumi over lunch which offers the same quality food, but you get a

complimentary appetizers, miso soup and dessert. Yoko brings to the table 20 years of experience at prestigious hotels in Tokyo to ensure the service is friendly and professional. The beautifully appointed restaurant is private and cosy and with its central location, is ideal for both the business and private occasions. The proof is not only in the pudding but in the feedback: restaurant review website www.dineout.co.nz scores Tatsumi a fabulous 8.6 based on 41 reviews. The emphasis is quite rightly on the food at Tatsumi, but both Koichi and Yoko are keenly aware of the importance of atmosphere and service. “We want to make sure that customers really enjoy the whole experience of dining at our restaurant,” adds Yoko. As well as the full dining experience, customers are welcome to pop in for original cocktail based on Twelve Zodiac Signs to enjoy with bar snacks. And as for spirits – you can’t beat this one: “Christchurch is very important for us; it made us what we are today. We always have Christchurch in our heart,” say Koichi and Yoko. Auckland can only be grateful.

Step Back into the Golden Age of Cinema Rubys Cinema and Bar is delighting lovers of the silver screen.

O

pened in October at Base Camp beneath the Lone Star, on 50 Cardrona Rd, Wanaka’s newest entertainment complex comprises two boutique cinemas and an extremely elegant and attractive bar. ``We wanted Rubys to capture that glamorous era when going to the pictures was an event,’’ explains Rubys delightful host and manager Jordi Hill. Two Gold Class cinemas form the pivot. Cinema 1 offers seating for 36. Here, viewings of all the latest releases, including those with the latest 3-D digital technology, are presented. At the front are the supreme seats, featuring electrically operated reclining armchairs. The intimate Cinema 2 seats just 16. Here, recent Art House titles, including independent productions and foreign movies, are enjoyed. The interior decor, reminiscent of the `20s and `30s, is sumptuous. Walls are clad in deep button Belgian velvet and swathes of red satin drapes. A sophisticated LED lighting system creates the effect of a night sky. Antique crystal chandeliers evoke the late-night haunts of America’s prohibition days. Bar refreshments have also been thoughtfully planned. Patrons can enjoy wine from an array of iconic labels, a range of boutique beers or a cocktail created by expert hands. Skilfully brewed espresso coffee is another choice. Patrons can also select from the bar’s counter menu or enjoy tubs of Pure New Zealand ice cream, while the ‘sweet tooths’ will not be able to pass by the Ruby lolly selections in their big jars on the bar. Standing by for special occasions is the stunning 1958 Cadillac Coupe Deville. Painted ruby red with whitewall tyres, it’s on hand to transport patrons to and from Rubys to make a special occasion even more memorable! Ph: +64 3 443 6901 www.rubyscinema.co.nz

Bringing Tuscany into Kiwi Kitchens

I

taly unlike any other country has had a profound influence on our general style, how we look at fashion, cars, furniture, interior home fittings, technology and our expectations of food in particular how pizza, pasta, wine and Olive Oils should taste. Sonja de Mari married into the Tuscan dream, after meeting her husband Simone here in Auckland during the 2003 America’s Cup Campaign. Ten 80

years later they have two little boys, piles of air miles, some funny stories about the Dolce Vita and an idyllic life on an Olive Grove in Tuscany. On trips back to New Zealand Simone struggled to find an Olive Oil that he loved. Last Christmas they opened 30 bottles of local and imported Olive Oils and tasted them all. None got his tick of approval. So they set about pressing testing and bottling the

products from their grove. The results were delicious premium Extra Virgin Olive Oils that they decided to import exclusively for New Zealands kitchens. “Ever wondered why the Italians look so good, why their food tastes so great! It is the Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is outstanding. It creates the best tasting food in the world. This was our inspiration to bring our Extra

Virgin Olive Oil direct from Tuscany into New Zealands kitchens, so Kiwi’s can taste a little bit of fabulous Italy every day!” The de Mari’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil brand is called Torrevecchia named after their land (translated means Old Tower). Their Toscano and Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils are made from 100% Tuscan Olives. Hand picked and cold extracted the same day. Torrevecchias blend of Frantoio and Leccino Olives uses only the first pressing and has incredibly low acidity of 0.2%. The Italian authorities protect it, test it and seal it, so you know you are buying the real thing. Their Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been stamped with the prestigious Toscano seal - Geographically protected and Organically Certified, there are no higher accolades. “New Zealands marketplace is full of Olive Oils, imported and local but the NZ market is still open to education, which makes our challenge exciting. In Italy the locals have just one type of Extra Virgin Olive Oil - the one they like the taste of - and they use it for everything. That’s our aim for the New Zealand market. To educate the buyer into loving the taste of the Olive Oil they buy.” Extra Virgin Olive Oils are high in antioxidants and are high in Vitamin E. They are not filtered or modified in any way. There is no cholesterol, no additives and Extra Virgin Olive Oils fight against heart disease and taste amazing. “Our Toscano and Organic varieties should be used as often as possible to dip, drizzle, dunk, sizzle, bathe & roast your food into a gastronomic heaven.” The de Mari’s home is amongst their grove, with over 1000 trees on the property, located in the southwest of Tuscany. “We live, breath and eat our product. Simone didn’t marry me for my culinary skills and I have yet to find my true stride as a domestic goddess, but with our premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil, some fresh produce and a pinch of salt even I can make some magic in the kitchen!” Toscano and Organic are stocked at selected New World stores in Remuera, Albany, Warkworth, Eastridge, Victoria Park, Devonport, Orewa, Botany, Mt Roskill, Browns Bay, Birkenhead and Lunn Ave. Jones the Grocer in Newmarket, Rama’s Fruitmart and La Boulange both on Jervois Road. If you enjoy simple cooking and love trying new recipes these can be found in the blog section of their website www.italyoliveoil.co.nz.

Top tips: 1. Try Olive Oil straight out of the bottle. You should love the way it tastes. 2. Store Olive Oils in dark bottles, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. 3. All benefits of the antioxidants and Vit E can be accessed when Olive Oil is poured straight out of the bottle. Drizzle on salads, over vegetables, pasta, rice, meat, fish and dip with breads. 4. Olive Oil is a fresh product, once opened - use it. 5. Cold Extracted, First Pressing. This means the Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been pressed without heat, within 24 hours of being picked. It is not filtered, altered or modified in any way, arriving in the purest, freshest form possible. 6. Country of Origin: Look for “Product of Italy” or “Italian Product”. 7. The Pure version of Olive Oil is Extra Virgin. Refined or virgin oils are 2nd or 3rd pressed and use heat in the extraction process. 8. 0.8% acidity is the official level below which the Oil may be classified as Extra Virgin Olive Oil. 9. Try a variety of Olive Oils to see what you like. It is a fun pre dinner experience when you have friends over. Grab a few oils some fresh bread and see how your taste buds react. 81

culinary experiences overseas. The product of three years extensive planning and research, Dragonfly is a stylish and relaxed dining lounge experience unlike any other on offer. Brent Wong is passionate about the philosophy behind the restaurant. “It’s essential to us that Dragonfly represents a cohesive picture,

A thousand strips of

ribbon fall from the ceiling, directing guests to a hidden bar. Carefully planned spaces lead to a tranquil, Zen-like bamboo courtyard garden, perfect for al fresco dining. Dragonfly showcases Head Chef Le Minh’s deft appreciation of his ingredients and talent for creating traditional dishes with a modern twist. The emphasis is on

freshness, flavour and judicious innovation. “Fusion can go too far”, says Tania. “Our focus is on a really fresh dish that is honest to its ingredients.” Signature dishes include Southern Clams, wok tossed in hot and sour sauce, and a meltingly tender, slow-cooked Angus Beef Curry. As much as possible is made

onsite, including sublime, handmade spring rolls and herb infused sauces. An impressive wine list, of both national and international wines, and Oriental inspired cocktails complete the Dragonfly experience. Ph: +64 4 8033995 www.dragon-fly.co.nz

Crowning Glory A groundbreaking redesign has transformed a forgotten corner into a fabulous new place to eat and play.

T

ranslating derelict heritage buildings into exciting, vibrant contemporary destinations is one of the hallmarks of truly metropolitan design. Auckland’s inner-city landscape can now be counted alongside the likes of New York and Melbourne with an ambitious redevelopment of the four-level heritage listed Imperial building. The burnt out and neglected shells of two century-old theatres, untouched for 50 years, form the heart of the unique hospitality precinct. Brought to life by a group of visionaries whose collective portfolio includes some of Auckland’s best heritage developments; Phillimore Properties (the creators of Britomart & The General Building); Fearon Hay Architects (architects behind Wynyard Quarter’s new North Wharf and many others); Pack & Company (who’s businesses include Northern Steamship, La Zeppa, Neighbourhood, Snapdragon and Shaky Isles) – it’s clear that the Imperial is as much about appreciating Auckland’s past as it is about reinvigorating Auckland’s present. “It would have been stupid to ignore what these historic buildings were offering,” says designer Sam Ansley and he jumped at the chance to be part of a catalyst for reinventing “a downtrodden part of Auckland”. The precinct’s flagship restaurant, The Roxy, sets the tone in true ‘sin city’ style with a seven-meter high neon sign that breathes backstreet romance. Soaring ceilings and a sweeping staircase are antique remnants of The Roxy’s theatrical past. A new mezzanine level and rooftop courtyard with views over urban Auckland, bring a 21st-century feel to the space.

The Roxy’s elegant, modern ambience perfectly sets off head chef Sean Marshall’s classic yet contemporary cuisine. Formerly head chef of Wellington’s Matterhorn, which under his direction was awarded New Zealand’s Best Restaurant in the 2008 Cuisine Magazine awards, Marshall offers an innovative take on fine French cooking. John Lethlean, restaurant critic for the Melbourne Age and Australian Gourmet Traveller, called Marshall a master of “unpredictable combinations, fresh thinking and thorough craftsmanship.” Next door, Everybody’s Bar and Bistro retains its beautiful ornate plaster ceilings and mouldings. The faded details are a nostalgic backdrop to the sumptuous gorgeousness of the reworked interior. With an extravagantly fitted out mezzanine level and expansive open-air courtyard, Everybody’s is about relaxed glamour and superior bistro eating in the capable hands of Marshall’s team. Imperial Lane is the artery that feeds the heart of the redesign. One of Auckland’s first “shared spaces”, Imperial Lane is a cobbled, brick-lined causeway between Fort Lane and Queen Street, pumping life and movement back into what was once a seedy backwater. By day, you can find a seriously good coffee and the creations of Michelin-star pastry chef, Kristina Jensen (Sean Marshall’s partner), in the new European patisserie and bakery, Elske. Evening ushers in a more chilled out and intimate atmosphere, with wine, small eats and live music on offer. Still growing, the Imperial will continue to offer even more exciting eateries, retailers and office space opportunities in and around the Lane.
