love the new seasons and new issues. It’s always exciting seeing a new issue come out after months of hard work from our team. This issue you will see the wonderful Colin Mathura-Jeffree on our cover doing what he does best. As one of NZ’s most loved celebrities Colin has continued to be an icon to the NZ fashion world and a beautiful human being we appreciate. On our other cover we have captured what Dantes Pizzeria is all about- great Italian cuisine, lots of fun and beautiful people. Whilst sitting at my desk looking out at the gardens across the road where the flowers are starting to bloom and people are lying on the grass relaxing eating their lunch, I am feeling refreshed after all the cold weather. Our souls seem to become revived and renewed as spring brings new life and beginnings. Here at Eye Magazine we also wish to present something new! We are starting a new tradition and announcing an award - the Eye magazine ‘Great Woman Award’ brought to you by Twenty8. We want to celebrate women who work hard, do good and give back to society. I know you will say there are 1,000’s of them and yes it’s going to be hard to pick the finalists and the winner. The winner will be announced at our spectacular Winger Alfa Romeo ‘What Women Want’ long lunch at the Cordis. Make a day of it with your friends and be sure you book your tickets. Every guest will get a $1,500 goody bag to take home! How do you look after yourself? Like most of you, my world is busy, my colleagues, friends and family are busy. It’s so hard to find time for everything! When actually the most important thing is finding time for you. You can’t give back if your glass is not full. I recently read Kim Morrison’s new book, ‘The Art of Self Love’ and was moved by her honest, raw and passionate personal stories. So inspiring, even though parts of it brought me to tears! So my final word to myself and to you is to slow down, take a breath and enjoy each moment.

Taking skin confidence to the world: Introducing Skinsmiths GREAT SKIN SHOULD BE SIMPLE, ACCESSIBLE AND ACHIEVABLE AND SKINSMITHS IS ON A GLOBAL MISSION TO REVOLUTIONISE THE SKIN CLINIC INDUSTRY – WITH SEVEN CLINICS NOW OPEN IN LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM.
14
D
on’t be mistaken, Skinsmiths is not a beauty clinic. Skinsmiths is serious about skin confidence and delivering long lasting results for their customers. With over two decades experience, they know that results take time. Skinsmiths began in New Zealand back in 1994, their first clinic was opened in Auckland, New Zealand, under the brand name Caci. It revolutionised the appearance industry and winning multiple industry awards. With global ambitions, Skinsmiths Co-Founder Director, Jackie Smith’s vision for the brand has always been to give women all over the world skin confidence. “We’re all looking for an instant result, but actually, in our heart of hearts we know that to get great, sustainable changes – that takes time” says Jackie. That’s why Skinsmiths offer a range of memberships. Rather than thinking about beauty treatments as ‘a facial here and a facial there’, the team at Skinsmiths have memberships and payment by subscription; so, treatments are more affordable – all in all it’s like a gym for your skin.
“Everybody has the right to skin confidence” Skinsmiths Co-Founder and Director, Jackie Smith.
There are membership plans for maintaining and improving skin health, cosmetic injections and laser hair removal. Skinsmiths offers free consultations, so clients meet with a Treatment Advisor to discuss their concerns and find out more about their treatment options first. Skinsmiths clinics combine expertise and care, in equal measures. And just like Caci, they’re known for providing the very best in results driven treatments, within a safe, welcoming and accessible environment. It’s an approach born out of their New Zealand way of doing things, and they’re excited to share it with women around the world, starting in London.

Self-Care Is Not Selfish, It’s Essential
I
t takes 28 days to create a habit; we are governed by 28-day cycles including the moon and tides; a woman’s cycle is centred around 28 days and it takes skin cells 28 days to rejuvenate. These natural rhythms align perfectly with the natural organic botanical ingredients including essential oils and chemical-free skincare products. Kim Morrison, the founder of Twenty8, was inspired by her love of educating people on the use of essential oils and chemical-free beauty products. At the time there were a number of natural product ranges on the market that included essential oils, however, she wanted to create a range with a strong focus on the unique qualities and benefits of essential oils. The importance of self-care is at the core of their business model. Twenty8 encourages everyone to not only take care of themselves but value the importance in doing so. This allows you to appreciate you are the entity in which you get to live your life to follow your dreams and drive your passions. Most importantly taking care of yourself is by choosing the best you possibly can with all you put in to and on to your body. However, knowing what is “organic” can be difficult, especially with essential oils. Twenty8 have chosen the best chemical-free, organic, high-grade ingredients. This
IN THE HUSTLE OF MODERN LIFE, IT CAN BE HARD TO FIND A WAY TO SLOW DOWN. FOR MANY, TAKING TIME OUT CAN SEEM INDULGENT AND EVEN SELFISH. AT TWENTY8 IT’S SEEN AS ANYTHING BUT SELFISH - IT IS ESSENTIAL. means they are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or GMOs with a focus on environmentally sustainable practices through soil and land health, and balanced ecosystems. The purity and authenticity of all their oils can be guaranteed through fully traceable supply lines and batch management systems. These oils have each been produced from the named Botanical species, from one single origin, and by the specified method of extraction. They contain no inputs or other technical additions. They have not been synthetically blended, nor formulated or adulterated in any way. The all-natural and certified ingredients in Twenty8’s skincare and essential oils are designed to cleanse from the inside out, so you can the best version of you. Brazilian Dancers Bring the Passion to every Performance WHEN IT COMES TO ENTERTAINMENT, EVERYONE WANTS SOMETHING THAT BRINGS THEIR EVENT ALIVE.
M
usas Samba Passion is a Brazilian dance entertainment company based in Auckland, New Zealand, who bring the authenticity, energy and spirit of Brazil to every event. They have become well-known for their uniquely colourful costumes and high-energy performances. Musas Samba Passion grew from humble beginnings with Gabriela Guimarães. “I’m from Brazil and very passionate about the art of my culture. Having the opportunity to work and spread this passion around New Zealand is a pleasure and happiness to my heart and also brings me back to Brazil which helps me to not miss home too much,” says Gabriela. Eight years ago, Gabriela came to New Zealand and initially started running classes to allow people to learn samba in a social environment. This has grown to one of Auckland’s largest Samba Schools - ‘Samba Passion School
of Brazilian Arts’. Students attend a range of classes, including Samba, Little Samba (kids) Malandro (Man), Funk Favela classes and Afro Brazilian. Their hard work is then showcased to family and friends at the popular midwinter and end-of-year shows. The 16 dances are choreographed by Gabriela and fueled by the talent and passion of the dedicated students. “None of this would be possible without their support and enthusiasm,” adds Gabriela. “Anyone can join our classes, they are full of energy, passion, and style so if you are looking for a new fun experience this is it!” Alongside the school, Musas Samba Passion also perform spectacular shows for community and private events. Rio Carnaval Shows, Brazilian Drumming with Copacabana beat band, Brazilian Funk Hip Hop, Afro Brazilian dance, Carmem Miranda show, Capoeira and much more!
The dedicated professionals of Musas Samba Passion are highly trained to provide unforgettable dance shows. However, it is through their love and passion for Brazilian culture that keeps these talented dancers spreading smiles to every event they are at. So, if you are looking for an energising, colourful, authentic and professional entertainment for your next event, look no further and book today! COLIN MATHURAJEFFREE Colin is a New Zealand model, actor, television host and spokesperson. He is known for being one of the judges of New Zealand’s Next Top Model and New Zealand’s Hottest Home Baker. A global personality, Colin Mathura-Jeffree has worked extensively as an international model, gracing the runways of iconic fashion houses and shooting for international fashion titles before making the transition to television. We sat down with Colin to find out more... Who’s your fashion icon? I live for fashion and have many icons. In terms of colour, I’ll give a shout out to my mother Rosalie who taught me to be fearless in fashion. I also admire heroes like James Dean and the lads of classic Hollywood for the easy, effortless style.. they fed my inspiration. I never imitate but enjoy the aesthetic while creating my own path. What cologne are you currently using? I break the rules and layer about three different colognes... I love it when I hug someone and they comment on how nice I smell. Where’s your favourite tropical travel destination? Having been an international model I got to travel enormously. As a child we did the Islands for holidays, and quickly learnt each country has a special vibe. As an adult I loved Sri Lanka and Maldives. Both are just delicious! I am a summer person so love the heat. I’m very curious about Israel, Morocco and Greece next.
What’s your go-to spring fashion accessory? A fresh lapel flower. What’s your favourite restaurant right now? So many restaurants. I think Auckland has improved in service. I was hosted by No. 1 at Giraffe and thought if a friend or Royal I knew from India landed, I’d host them there for a noisy lunch... because it’s about a combination of ease, atmosphere and a menu that sets the tone for a hilarious catch up. Any last words? Life is a series of moments, it’s your choice of path, but I’d go where you can’t help but smile, or struggle not to laugh. Be the hero of your life’s adventure and never live in regret.

othing beats the dopamine rush you experience when you find that perfect lovely thing, hand over the credit card or press ‘buy now’ on your favourite site. Growing up with a mother who had a keen eye for great deals and making every dollar stretch, I learnt from a young age how to get luxury results on an amazing budget, enabling me to fuel my love of shopping, without breaking the bank. Now I’m addicted to getting exactly what I want, at the best price possible. Very few people are fortunate enough to become overnight millionaires, so if you’re like me - a millionaire in the making - and want to live that luxurious life NOW, defining luxury on your terms is a key to making it obtainable. For me luxury is about quality people, quality experiences and yes I admit it....quality ‘things’ that deliver on their promises. They make life happier, healthier, easier or just more fabulous, and I now have the great joy of avidly hunting for those products from around the world, sharing their promises with my community. Though I’ve been told many times that I’d never make it happen, through either insanity or blind ignorance, 5 days a week I host TV style, webTV shows, showcasing products, businesses and brands in an authentic, true to kiwi style. You’ll never once hear ‘Have we got a great deal for the viewers’ or ‘But wait there’s more’. My goal is to deliver real demonstrations showing real results, in real time. It’s still hard to believe that more than 70 million people have seen my face over the last 2 years and I’m about to appear to 80 million daily viewers on TV in China. Life is good, and thankfully so are the products I pick and represent. Social Shopping, as I love to call it, is the perfect solution for shopping addicts like me. I do all the hard work to find game changing products that deliver, so you can get the dopamine rush we both love, and the results you’ve been looking for. Could life get any easier?

A RARE GEM NESTLED ABOVE BROADWAY IN A CREATIVE SUITE, IS THE BEST DESTINATION STORE IN NEWMARKET! GREG HOLLAND, A FINE JEWELLER TO A VERY IMPRESSIVE CLIENTELE, MANY OF WHOM HAVE BEEN HIS CUSTOMERS FOR OVER 15 YEARS. A DREAM CATCHER OF SORTS, GREG’S REPUTATION IS BUILT ON BESPOKE PIECES HE INTERPRETS FROM HIS CLIENTS’ DESIRES.
H
is pieces described by one of his delighted customers, as ‘wearable works of art.’ His entire business is relationship driven and by word of mouth. In fact, Holland has rarely advertised! A specialist in fine jewellery and precious gems, Holland prides himself on sourcing rare gems, often with special projects or people in mind. And when his dealers come over from France, Germany and Sri Lanka, he invites his ‘regulars’ to join the viewing. Most recently, he decided to indulge his time into a personal collection derived from childhood holidays and his love of the New Zealand landscape, called Inspired. The Waimakariri River in the Southern Alps was Greg’s first interpretation, and he created a breathtaking ring from platinum gold, diamonds and Sri Lankan sapphires. It sparkled just like the sun hitting the surface of the river. His clever use of tonal texture with the sapphires, actually made the ring ripple. It’s breathtaking. He put it on my finger (always trouble) and the weight was like
nothing I’d felt before. He smiled at my delight and said to me “Quality sells itself and density is platinum pleasure” This ice-cool character has a heart of gold underneath and lives by his motto ‘Craft with Love’. You can feel it when you walk into his studio, and observe each piece crafted with his passion and creativity. He’s customer driven and has a social conscious too, often sourcing recycled platinum and responsibly sourced NZ gold. He’s won awards for his business ethics and innovation but has also involved himself in the community such as Shave for a Cure and is the official jeweller for the Sir Peter Blake Trust. Reading their thankyou letter, confirmed my intuition that Greg is one of the good guys! In a world where we can choose who gets our dollar, it’s nice to meet a local businessman who has integrity, creativity and is trustworthy. A must-visit for your next investment piece, Greg is a rare gem indeed!

A
nd the personal service of Kinloch’s on-site Wedding Co-ordinator means that every wedding-day dream will become unforgettably true. Recently opened to great, five-star acclaim, The Lodge at Kinloch recreates the feel of a namesake Scottish castle but adds slick 21st century design and uber-luxury. Superb hospitality, comfort and cuisine share the sensational landscape of The Kinloch Club, an internationally lauded Jack Nicklaus Signature golfing course, to create incomparable wedding experiences on a private estate that slopes directly down to New Zealand’s biggest and most beautiful sporting and fishing lake, set in the very heartland of the scenic North Island. The sleek and luxurious venue offers two styles of wedding; smaller non-exclusive use or larger exclusive use of the entire lodge with each fashioned precisely by our in-house Wedding Co-ordinator, Executive Chef and their teams. Choices begin with the marriage ceremony, which might even be outdoors amid stunning scenery and sparkling lake views. Reception styles vary from chic champagne or cocktails and canapes for small numbers to a gourmet five-course banquet for hundreds. Whatever the decision, Kinloch’s dedicated professionals ensure everything is done with a full sense of the importance of the day plus the ever-present sight and silent heart-beat of Lake Taupo constantly threading together every detail of each romantic memory. Smaller receptions with non-exclusive use of the Lodge might choose The Den, regal, soft and warm with silver and golds, slate floors and lush New Zealand designed wool rugs. Up to 55 can enjoy cocktails here or banqueting is for up to 75. The smaller and more casual Clubhouse can seat
up to 50 banquet style and entertain up to 37 for cocktails. Exclusive use of The Lodge at Kinloch for bigger weddings means superb accommodation in junior suites, one and two bedroom lake-view villas, full use of the Lodge’s beautiful reception rooms and a choice of dining and entertainment venues. Perhaps the lofty Great Room or The Dining Room, a bold but modern calm of whitewash with light and airy vistas. Here up to 100 guests may dine overlooking majestic Lake Taupo. Whether for canapes or a five-course Wedding Breakfast banquet of the freshest and best seasonal produce, the Club’s Executive Chef and our food and beverage team work closely with the wedding party to ensure favourite delicacies and flavours are included where possible. Using organic reared produce in the restaurant, sourced from nearby sister lodge Treetops Lodge & Estate - 2500 acres of 100% pesticide free virgin forest and gardens. And accompanying wines from Kinloch’s wide-ranging cellar will complement and enhance the occasion still further. Complementing the lodge is an on-site Spa, tennis courts, our own 6 seater Squirrel helicopter and full concierge service. The Lodge at Kinloch Club offers incomparable venues and experiences for weddings of any size and style. And, with heart-shaped Lake Taupo always in view, we believe that every wedding-day dream will become unforgettably – and romantically – true. As it should.

In your opinion, what are some of the new challenges our girls face? Having fought so hard to be equal in the workplace, and to have the platform to ‘do it all’ It is important not to try to get stuck in the superwoman mindset. Time management and balance is key. Vital things like health suffer when balance is out of whack. Prioritise keeping fit – it will give you the energy you need to tackle the obstacles that will fly your way. What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self? Don’t take yourself so seriously! Don’t panic – shoulder pads will eventually come back into vogue. What are your 5 tips to being successful? • Back yourself. • Keep learning – upskill upskill upskill. • Be on time – for everything. • Its business – don’t take it personally. • Always, always have plan B.

Danielle Lendich CEO, WENDY’S HAMBURGERS
In your opinion, what are some of the new challenges our girls face? I think the biggest new challenge our girls face is social media. While it has many positive aspects like being able to stay in contact with friends and family, I think much of what people post on social media is to give a perfect impression to the outside world. We are airbrushing our lives and creating an intolerable level of peer pressure for our children. How can we encourage girls to succeed? Girls are succeeding. There are wonderful young women doing things that are world leading and breaking down the barriers of “that can’t be done.” We should be encouraging girls to use their voice as individuals and collectively to stand up for what is right. What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self? Enjoy the freedom of being young, the travel, the friendships, the no responsibility. What are your 5 tips to being successful? • Be strong and confident, use your voice. • Put your best effort into everything you do. • Only care what those that matter think – don’t take things personally. • Don’t expect others to do something you wouldn’t do yourself. • Be active in what you do.
OWNER, LOVRICH FOR FABRIC In your opinion, what are some of the new challenges our girls face? The challenges are the same whether it is my generation, this one or the next one. No matter what, just get on with it and you will succeed. How can we encourage girls to succeed? Work hard, talk less, do what you feel is right, learn from your mistakes and laugh often. Stop complaining and invest in yourself. Most importantly, dream big and help others set goals . What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self? I would tell myself to work just as hard, but to play more. What are your 5 tips to being successful? • I only focus on what I am doing in business, I don’t believe in competition. • I don’t do “can’t do”. • Trust your gut and be passionate. • Stand out don’t blend in. • Business has its ups and downs but the journey back is far more interesting than the journey at the top.

In your opinion what are some of the new challenges our girls face? Overcoming their own insecurities and owning up to their successes. We always have a lot of insecurities and with today’s society and social media this is a now a bigger obstacle to overcome. I think we have to remain strong and believe in what we are capable of. When we have doubt in our minds about what we can achieve then we don’t push ourselves to the next level.
In your opinion, what are some of the new challenges our girls face? I think the challenges are the same as they always have been but the difference now is that there is more recognition of those challenges.
How can we encourage girls to succeed? Support each other and learn from each other. Don’t be afraid to use the qualities that females are strong in to your advantage such as our awesome communication skills and multitasking abilities. Stick up for yourself and don’t take any negativity. Find a role model and learn as much as you can from them.
What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self? Find a mentor and life coach who has experience in the industry you want to work in. Advice, guidance and support from experts can help keep you on the right path.
HEAD BREWER. SHAKESPEARE HOTEL & BREWERY
What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self? Take on more challenges and don’t doubt yourself. Learn as much as you can along the way! What are your 5 tips to being successful? • Be optimistic. • Stay true to yourself and what you believe in. • Go beyond your comfort zone. • Don’t be afraid of doing the dirty work. • Most importantly do what you love!.
OWNER, DRAGONFLY
How can we encourage girls to succeed? Encourage them to follow their dreams, believe in themselves and not be afraid of failure.
What are your 5 tips to being successful? • Believe in yourself. • Learn from your mistakes and turn them into an opportunity. • Do what you love and what you are passionate about. • Surround yourself with people who possess skills that you don’t have but that you need and learn from them. • Be honest, open and communicate openly with your employees and customers.

ut it’s our selfless charitable women closer to our everyday lives, that often go unnoticed. It’s these women that Eye magazine would like to celebrate with their new initiative: ‘The Eye Magazine Great Women Awards brought to you by Twenty8.’ This, their first year, they are delighted to see such positive support coming through from sponsors to nominees to ticket sales. Women make up fewer than 50% of the world population but live longer than men, often creating an imbalance later in life. Due to this, a ‘tall –poppy’ syndrome can occur and so the only way we can reduce the divide between gender equality, is to support our own sex. What’s refreshing, is that for the first time in any women’s awards, Eye magazine and Twenty8 want to seek out women who make a difference to other women, to the community, to the greater New Zealand instead of focusing on and celebrating their beauty, popularity, status or size
of their business. What’s even more impressive is the Multimedia Magazine team have left the nominations in your hands, the trusted, loyal readers – everyday people, witnessing everyday greatness. To make it a spectacular event, The Eye Magazine Great Women Awards brought to you by Twenty8 will coincide with the annual Alfa Romeo ‘What Women Want’ event, at the stunning Cordis Hotel and the overall winner will be announced on the day. The awards have been sponsored by newcomer to the beauty market, Twenty8, a chemical-free skincare and aromatherapy company formed by Kim Morrison; a pioneering women herself, the perfect partner for the awards! The nominees will be announced on Eye Magazine’s facebook page, from matriarchs to teachers to mentors and doctors, all worthy and all GREAT women.

This has been invaluable to loyal customers when they have been busy, ill or incapacitated. Eye Magazine Girls Take The Plunge!
Eye Magazine, along with some great teams, participated in this year’s Heart Kids 360 Heart Stopper Challenge. An incredible $49,000 was raised for Heart Kids as volunteers, including boxer Joseph Parker, pledged to sit for 360 seconds in tubs filled with icy water chilled to 10 degrees. Each year 550 major heart surgeries are performed on children and babies with heart defects. During surgery, a child’s chest cavity can be filled with an icy slush to slow the heart’s requirement for oxygen, which can help give the surgeon a longer window of operating time. The 360 Heart Stopper Challenge celebrates these brave children, and aims to spread awareness and provide lifelong support for those who battle childhood heart defects. heartkids.org.nz

Fabuleux Vous are dedicated to creating jewellery that is infused with meaning and soul. Their pieces are designed in New Zealand and inspired by the world. Their stunning innovative collections are a true testament to the saying “style meets sophistication”. Wear your own kind of beautiful this season with the new collection ‘Maria’. RETAIL SHOPPING BRINGS IN EXCESS OF $33 BILLION TO AUCKLAND’S GDP EACH YEAR BUT AS WE LOOK FORWARD, IT HAS EVEN MORE POTENTIAL. MAJOR NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND REDEVELOPMENTS ARE HAPPENING. CR DESLEY SIMPSON
N
ewmarket is getting a makeover with a huge $790 million development to transform 277 Broadway into the new Westfield Newmarket which will include a new fit for purpose building housing Australian department store David Jones over two floors. Sylvia Park is having a $223 million Galleria expansion and the new $850 million, 39-level Commercial Bay tower on Quay St in the CBD are other retail projects under development in Auckland. Commercial Bay will start to come to life from August with H&M set to be the first retailer to open, with Westfield Newmarket on track to open in 2019. Whilst online retail provides shopping options too, physical retail has an important place in the life of a city. There is an undeniable pleasure that exists in getting out and enjoying the experience of shopping and that’s not going away. Shops are important parts of a city’s public realm; places to socialize, to discover, to be inspired and to be seen. KPMG’s 2018 Retail Trends report stressed the need for leading retailers to provide a great experience for shoppers. In their words: ‘Physical retail isn’t dead, but boring retail is’. Part of this is the trend towards much more interactive shopping experiences within stores. It’s also in the design of shopping precincts themselves as there is an increasing effort to make retail centres places for people to be. They do this by creating a mix of activities and facilities, from integrating public transport to childcare, offices and residential zones. The redevelopments of Westfield Newmarket, Sylvia Park and the new Commercial Bay will be well placed to set a new pace for Auckland’s retail by providing a shopping experience that can compete with the very best in the world. With growth in tourism to Auckland, these world class retail opportunities put us in a good position to maximise the value that high visitor numbers bring to our economy, as well as ensuring you and I have a fun experience shopping and socializing too.

APARTMENT, YOU HAVE ARGUABLY SEEN THEM ALL. AT EYE MAGAZINE, WE SOUGHT TO CHALLENGE THIS AND TAKE A MINIMAL AUCKLAND CITY APARTMENT FROM AVERAGE TO SPECTACULAR. THE RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, WITH THE APARTMENT THAT EYE ALTERED A HUGE SUCCESS.
small, white kitchen is common in these apartments but this has been replaced with impeccably designed high-end cabinetry and accompaniments and a spacious layout. Thanks to the expert eye of internationally acclaimed interior designer Mal Corboy, the design is modern, sophisticated and timeless. Design, Build, Join (DBJ), ensured this was followed through with high-quality cabinetry that boasts luxurious dark hues and contrasting brass metal accents. The highlight of the kitchen is undoubtedly the striking tiles that make up the splashback. Tile Warehouse are known for their luxury tiles and wide range of designs available, many of which have been imported from Europe. As such, they were the ideal choice for this project. The tiles used are BIZ-ART Sahara, which gives the kitchen a luxury and glamour feel, completely lighting the space up. “When it came to tiles I knew nothing about them and it surprised me how many styles designs and options are on offer in New Zealand,” says Editor Vanessa Bennett. The Tile Warehouse was front of mind as it is a well known brand but I had always seen the word ‘warehouse’ as a cheaper option. I was so impressed by the service, advice and quality choices we had! A tile wall can change a room and give it texture, depth and warmth. My final word on tiles is “what a difference a tile makes I would choose The Tile Warehouse and their tiles again in a flash.”Of course, what is a kitchen without the fittings? For this project, a range of high-end, luxurious appliances from NEFF were chosen. This included the NEFF cooktop (as pictured) and the NEFF Slide and Hide Oven - the top oven featuring a microwave and grill, while the bottom oven door slides under the oven cavity for more room. The convenience and ease of use of the oven combination frees up time for entertaining guests rather than cooking. Additionally, there is a silent extractor and rangehood from Schweigen, one of the most efficient air manufacturers of silent range hoods and bathroom fans in the world and a stunning fully integrated fridge from Bosch, with ample storage space.
Another key feature of the kitchen is the Caesarstone kitchen bench, cut and shaped by Architectural Stone. It blends seamlessly with the black sink and tap from Paterson, which also features a water purifier from Parex, providing instant access to hot and cold water. Even city apartments deserve a beautiful dining area and this project is no different. The table, plates and accessories are from French Country and have been paired with Arthur Dining Chairs from David Shaw Furniture, who also created the bespoke ottoman sitting adjacent to the dining table. To create a slight Scandinavian feel an Icelandic Sheepskin from The Sheepskin Factory was placed atop of the ottoman. Mal chose light tan timber tiles from Forté Flooring to balance the contrasting colours from the kitchen to the dining area. For the living area, comfort is the name of the game, which features a David Shaw couch, ottoman and James Salmond coffee table all from David Shaw Furniture. The couch is decorated with a Snowshoe Hare Throw, Rabbit Fur and Mustard Cushions from Harrowset Hall and The Linen Store. At the advice of Mal and International Stylist Donna Balasoglou, mustard cushions were added to carry the theme of the brass accents from the kitchen into the lounge. Whether you want to transform your wardrobe, re-design your workspace, or have your home styled to perfection, you can be sure Donna will execute a plan that will leave you with beautifully successful results. The decor marries the light with the dark without taking away the luxe theme. Wallpaper from Aspiring Walls, a cowhide from Mooi, Possum Rugs and white flower tables from Matisse as well as a beautiful arrangement of faux flowers from Fabulous Faux Flowers. City apartments have a strange juxtaposition of luxury views and locations that are often paired with cheap fittings. Investing in quality and using experts at their trade changes this outcome. With a few alterations, even a drab city apartment can be made into something fabulous.

Achieve the perfect indoor-outdoor flow with a minimal environmental impact Forté Flooring aren’t just known for their beautiful timber panelling, however. When it comes to creating quality wooden floors and walls, they understand the impact it will have on the environment. With a passion for sustainable practices and protecting our precious planet, Forté Flooring strive to offset the use of natural materials by giving back to the environment. This year, they planted approximately 2,000 trees to replenish the oaks used in 2017. You can check the replanting progress at forteflooring.co.nz/environmental. Sustainable practices are used throughout the whole process, from sourcing right down to construction. The team make sure to choose ethically sourced hardwood and noncontroversial timber of the highest quality European oaks whilst ensuring certain collections meet PEFC, FSC and LEED certifications. No endangered or rare timber species are used in the crafting of Forté’s fine flooring and
walls. The end results are engineered timber panels that minimise the requirement of slow-growing hardwood by a third! You get the a product of the exact same dimensions and quality, whilst wastage is cut down to a minimum. Did you say wood-free wood? Of course, with over 100 products in Forté Flooring’s collections, you might feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes to choosing the perfect wooden accent for your home. This year, New Zealanders have access to a special new range - perfect as the rainy season continues. Forté are proud to be exclusive distributors of Millboard Decking, a low-carbon and sustainable decking material that’s entirely wood-free! It’s composite decking taken to the next level, and is a premium, low-maintenance solution for outdoor decking to last the seasons. Millboard is hand-moulded from natural timbers, using wood-free polyurethane combined with mineral stone. The end result is a near-perfect replica of real wooden textures - but this offers superior resistance to all the seasons that New Zealand has to offer. No more will you need to paint, stain or coat your outdoor deck. Millboard Decking is both slip- and scratch-resistant, particularly as it inhibits algae growth. Maintenance of Millboard Decking is kept to a minimum, whilst the quality of the materials will be sure to outlast the initial cost. It’s the type of innovative product that Forté Flooring strive to provide, and with their wide range of interior timber flooring and wall panelling, the team can help you achieve that seamless indoor-outdoor flow with a complementary finish.

Queen Street’s New Eatery brings Italy to the CBD QUEEN STREET HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS. ONCE A PLETHORA OF STORES SELLING FUR COATS, DIAMONDS, RECORDS AND THE LIKE, IT NOW BOASTS HIGH-END DESIGNER BRANDS. HOWEVER, IT’S NOT A NEW GUCCI STORE THAT HAS TAKEN QUEEN STREET TO NEW HEIGHTS, BUT A ONE-OF-A-KIND EATERY.
ueen’s Rise is an eatery like no other. Nestled behind the iconic façade of 125 Queen Street, Queen’s Rise is Auckland’s latest go-to dining destination. A bustling hub for the hungry, lifting elevated dining to a whole new level. This includes Italian restaurant Dante’s, winner of best of Auckland four years in a row and best in New Zealand for 2015 and 2016, by Metro Magazine. Dante’s won the hearts of diners from Auckland and afar with their authentic italian pizzas. Made with Caputo flour from Napoli, tomato from San Marzano, mozzarella cheese from Campana and baked in the wood fired oven hand made in Napoli by Gianni Acunto the master of his
craft, Dante’s brought a slice of Italy to New Zealand. Moreover, they are the only New Zealand pizzeria with Vera Pizza Napoletana accreditation. Rather than stay content, Dante’s continued to push the envelope, introducing their patrons to authentic Italian pasta. Just as their pizza, the pasta is created with care, ensuring only the best is served from their kitchen daily. The flour, ingredients and many of the recipes come from the same region in Italy as their famous pizzas do. The Queen’s Rise restaurant is complete with Electrolux fittings, Peroni on tap, and a carefully curated range of Italian red and white wine from Artigiano Wines. For those looking for a spot in the mornings, the Segafredo coffee is smooth, organic and the perfect companion to their cuisine. The fitout has spared no expense with custom made tiles for walls and floors from Italy by Casa Italiana. The luxe nature invokes all the senses while still ensuring the food and service is at the heart of the dining experience. Since it’s launch 13 years ago, Dante’s has moved from its original home in Kumeu to Ponsonby Central, Takapuna’s Fortieth & Hurstmere and now Queen’s Rise. But one thing hasn’t changed, and that’s the absolute care and quality that is put into every dish. Dante’s offers food, wine and an experience that is straight to the point and what is offered in Italy on almost every corner. So, if you’re a destination seeker who’s after more than food for the stomach but food for the soul, look no further.

The Shakespeare celebrates 120 years of history WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE ONCE WROTE ‘I WOULD GIVE ALL MY FAME FOR A POT OF ALE’- AND WERE THE LEGENDARY PLAYWRIGHT ALIVE TODAY TO SAMPLE THE SHAKESPEARE HOTEL’S HANDCRAFTED BREWS; HE MAY HAVE DONE JUST THAT!

elebrating its 120th anniversary this year, the iconic Auckland bar became a pioneering force in New Zealand’s craft beer scene in 1986, when then owner Peter Barraclough established an on-site microbrewery – making it the country’s first brew pub. It’s a tradition that current owner Sunny Kaushal is committed to continuing, citing The Shakespeare’s range of live beers as a point of difference. “Live brewing means that the beer isn’t pasteurised or filtered, allowing our customers to enjoy the true flavour of beer in all its glory,” says Sunny. “First time visitors to the pub always comment on the noticeable taste difference, and it’s a must-try for beer lovers looking for something different. We also offer brewery tours for those interested in the brewing process, and they make great staff events!” While the historic pub’s beer range is an important part of what The
Shakespeare has to offer, Sunny says it’s the stories embedded in the walls that make it truly unique. “So many of our customers have their own special memories associated with this place, and I love it when people come in and share their experiences. To honour the establishment’s history, Sunny says they’re planning a special 120th anniversary event for later in the year, which will include the release of a new brew to mark the occasion. “It’s going to be a very special evening and I’d love to invite all those who have stories to share about the times they’ve spent here along to celebrate with us. “I’d also encourage them to come and see what we’re doing as new owners. We have an excellent quiz night every Wednesday, and live music on Fridays and Sundays to help people relax and unwind during the weekend. “We’ve also retained the building’s heritage and the décor makes dining here a one-of-a-kind experience.”

No acting here! WHEN SOMEONE MENTIONS THE NAME NOTTINGHILL, I INSTANTLY THINK OF ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ROM-COMS WITH JULIA ROBERTS AND HUGH GRANT! AND IN KEEPING WITH ALL THINGS ENGLISH, THIS PARNELL EATERY, NOTTINGHILL KITCHEN, BRINGS A LITTLE SLICE OF ENGLISH HUMOUR AND POSH-NOSH TO THE TABLE!

his licensed Café and Restaurant is family-run by husband and wife Vicky from Fleetwood and Joe from Fiji at the helm. They cater to those wanting a cosy catch up with friends by the fire, a group of foodies looking to satisfy their tastebuds with great grub, or the pop-in lunch crowd. Comfort foods like Bubble and Squeak or the very naughty but oh so yummy truffle Parmesan fries or the Dads Army burgers are just the ticket for a late Saturday chowdown or after work nibble. But when you move up to their brunch classics like Yorkie Bacon-butty or the Welsh Rarebit or dinner favourites such as the Thai Kedgeree or Pimms cured salmon, you know you’re in culinary bliss. They are kid-friendly and have a little persons menu with winners like Boiled egg and Soldiers or one little piggie went to market (ham toasty) plus I did spot on the menu that great service, smiles and hugs were free – that must be the Kiwi influence right? Head Chef Kirk Lafferty is the token Kiwi, hailing from Dunedin but one could argue that that’s about as British as you can get down there, so they are a great trifecta, and with just over three months to Christmas, this trio are revving up for the busy season. Many businesses and groups start to look for venues to host their end of year celebrations and Nottinghill Kitchen are one of the local favourites. Open for breakfast and lunch with a minimum of 20 guests, they can create a stunning intimate experience with canapés and/or a buffet or perhaps teas and dessert (you must try the choc rum balls) They have so many repeat customers it is hard to book so I wouldn’t dilly-dally, but with reviews like 4/5 on Zomato, 4.5/5 on Trip Advisor and 4.7/5 on Facebook, you won’t be disappointed! Book your event now or swing by for a bit of English fare!

Auckland Businesses Share Their Favourite Recipes in New Cookbook COOKBOOKS HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE HEARTS AND HOMES OF NEW ZEALANDERS. IN A HIGH-TECH AGE, THEY HAVE REMAINED A CORE OF KITCHENS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE SAT DOWN WITH PATRICK LEE-LO, WHO’S INNOVATIVE RANGE OF COOKBOOKS ARE ENSURING THIS DOES NOT CHANGE.
Auckland Art Gallery, and on display were the lavish food menus of the Renaissance era, which with just a few ingredient tweaks, would not look out of place in a modern cookbook. Cookbooks are loved by every nationality, culture and creed. And there is always something warm and homely about seeing a kitchen with cookbooks. And of course, food brings people together.
1. You have had great success with cookbooks in the past. What are some of your well-known titles? It depends what you define as ‘great’. But yes, I believe our Media Company - Currywurst Media has achieved great success with our books, just three that come to mind are: ‘Cooking4Change’ - featuring 101 Kiwi celebrities sharing their favourite recipes to help raise money for four charities that we support. This book was published two years ago and is still being sold through all good book stores. This has become an iconic Kiwi cookbook. ‘My Mother’s Kitchen’ is another successful book. This cookbook features over 70 Chefs, Food Writers and Foodies many of them with their mums and they feature their favourite dishes that their mothers cooked. This is a lovely book and some of the recipes are recognisable as great Kiwi home dishes. I imagine any Chef or Foodie who has been given such an opportunity to share a dish their mum made and who undoubtedly inspired many to pursue a career in food - it would be quite a legacy for them to leave with their family and friends. ‘Delicious Dunedin’ - This cookbook has just been launched so is available now. It features various Otago eateries and interesting businesses. It also features many colorful and interesting Otago characters. So, it is a special cookbook with lots of dishes including those that reflect Dunedin’s cultural melting pot of Lebanese, Poles, Dutch, German, Pasifika people, Cambodians, and Syrians just to name a few. It’s a great book for anyone but especially for those who have a link with Otago – and its amazing just how many people around NZ do. And even if you don’t the style, layout, stories, people and recipes are amazing.
3. Tell us some more about your latest cookbook with a corporate focus. We have published two business cookbooks already with two more in the pipeline, but the latest is “What’s Cooking Auckland Businesses Share their Favourite Recipes” (WCA). We showcase a select number of businesses - less than 70, we photo shoot each businesses’ team, write up a small profile on who they are and what they do, display their dish including ingredients and cooking method. Once printed each business gets a minimum of 60 books to give away as gifts to their existing and potential customers. It is a unique way of showcasing your business and very cost effective. Less 0.20 cents per business to reach 15,000+ businesses. Our business cookbooks will not be available in bookstores - but only to those businesses in the cookbook will get copies. So, it’s exclusive. It’s no coincidence that a lot of business is done over food and most business network groups meeting in cafes. Food is good for business. This book will be out in time for Christmas. WCA won’t be available in bookstores only those great businesses featured in it will have them, so it has some exclusivity. Its no coincidence that most business networks meet in cafes or that business deals are done over food. Food is good for business and business is good for food! What is your favourite dish? I love seafood and Italian food. So, anything that has seafood and pasta is pretty much my favourite. The simpler the better. I love Paua and Whitebait too as a special treat when I can get it and afford it!

2. Why cookbooks? What is it about them that people love? ‘Why not?” I have spoken to so many people about cookbooks and the consensus is that a cookbook is one book that people will still buy. It is also the ‘go to’ present that everyone loves. You know if you run out of gift ideas - buy a cookbook. Its practical, it does not date - last year I visited ‘The Corsini Collection’ - A window on Renaissance at the

Craft Beer for the Worldly Explorer
CRAFT BEER HAS TRULY TAKEN NEW ZEALAND BY STORM AND THE BOOM IS FAR FROM OVER. LEADING THE CHARGE IN NEW ZEALAND IS URBANAUT, THE RESULT OF THREE HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS FROM THE RANGITIKEI - BRUCE TURNER, SIMON WATSON AND THOMAS ROWE.
T
hey share a passion for exploring the world’s most exciting cities and ultimately a love of great beer. The name comes from their brewing philosophy of exploring cities, from places they’ve travelled to, or yearn to and taking inspiration from these cities in every beer that is brewed. We sat down with Urbanaut’s Bruce Turner to discuss their impressive Kingsland brewery and how it all began. Tell me some more about your brewery and the beers on offer? Urbanaut is based in Kingsland, Auckland. We’ve stripped back and polished up this industrial building to create the finest experience for discovering and celebrating craft beer. We have beer tastings, brewery tours and a cellar door open every day for taking home the freshest beer. We’ve installed a state of the art brewery built in Canada, which is designed to produce beer of the highest quality while also having the versatility to produce a wide range of beer styles, so we can release new and interesting beers every month. Beer styles range from our flagship Kingsland Pilsner brewed true to Czech style, to our hugely hopped El Segundo West Coast IPA and our pioneering Copacabana Brut IPA which is shaping up to be the Auckland beach beer of summer 2018! Why are more people drinking and supporting craft beer in New Zealand? Supporting local is something we’ve always lived and supported, which has been ever present in contemporary Auckland. The idea of supporting a local product with providence, connection and a community presence has seen a real shift recently. In coming years, Kiwis will see the days of drinking bland mainstream beer that is heavily marketed but lacking taste and flavor, follow a similar shift to wine. As seen with the emergence in the 80’s and 90’s of the appreciation for quality wine with heritage, flavour and nuance, rather than the previous two options of either red or white. Quality beer is rightly following a similar path. What makes Urbanaut different from other craft beers? Urbanaut craft beer is made for the worldly explorer. Urbanaut beers are designed to celebrate the cities that inspired their creation. Whether you know the destination well, or yearn to explore it someday, we create beers to resemble a taste of the culture and experience of the city, no matter where you are in the world. But for us Auckland is home. It’s a worldly city where people are doing new and exciting things and we’re proud to be in this part of Auckland and to say we’re from Auckland. The Urbanaut tasting room and cellar door is open weekdays from 1pm to 8pm, Saturday 12pm to 8pm and Sunday 12pm to 6pm. Brewery tours can be booked on the website: www.urbanautbrewing.co.nz

he War Memorial Museum’s two main marble Halls of Memory, have every fallen New Zealand soldier’s name, etched with gratitude and their scenes of battle portrayed on the frieze’s surrounding the external Grecian walls. Since opening in 1929, the Museum has offered a sacred haven for the fallen, for the magical, for all things cultural and creative and to celebrate nature. The Auckland Museum, is open 10-5pm daily and admission is free to all Aucklanders, as are the many displays and exhibitions. Daily Maori cultural performances and daily highlights tours makes a half-day visit easy and fun. Or spend the whole day and you could visit some amazing exhibitions such as Are we there yet? Celebrating the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage, which is on till 31st October and covers the wins and losses of the fairer sex’s struggles for equality. Another insightful display is “Not one more acre” exhibition on now in the Maori Court. This looks back on the eviction of the Ngati Whatua tribe and the iwi’s settlement, on this the 40th anniversary. But what’s really grabbed the headlines, is the Museum’s bug problem! On now until May 2019, the Secret World of butterflies features the stunning Shannon Collection of butterflies with their kaleidoscope of colours and patterns. To compliment this, from October 2-5th is the award-winning Theatre show: Caterpillars for children aged 4 -8 years old. Perfect family entertainment, to engage and entertain children these school holidays – it’s bugs galore! Set in a magical world of flitting butterflies and giant swaying flowers, the hapless puppeteers take upbeat absurdity and silliness to new heights. Created by Cantabrian Thomas Monckton, he says “I love bringing my new work home to try out on the kiwis, and it’s exciting to have a show coming to Auckland Museum these coming holidays that caters for the whole family,” Stop in on level 1 afterwards to the hands-on-fun Weird and Wonderful World and then call it a day with an ice cream in the café! Who said history can’t be fun?
